Autumn Twilight It is pleasant to be bathed in the autumn sunshine that is slightly obscured by the thin clouds, and enjoy the beautiful scenery among mountains and rivers. As the ancient Chinese poet Han Yu sang, “Light clouds obscure the autumn sunshine and drizzles fall to the ground.” In this design, the interplay between light and shadow on the French windows reproduces the scene of sunlight and tree shadows, as if the glow of a setting sun penetrates the forest. In this way, the charm of transparence and profundity emerges. Bright colors, such as beige, salmon and water blue, are combined with the calming earth tones to create an elegant and luxurious atmosphere, as well as the comfort life with Eastern aesthetics. Ishikawa Brewery was established in 1863, by the Ishikawa family. Although originating as a sake company, from 1887 to 1888 they experimented with beer. Then, after 111 years, in 1998, they revived the beer brewery. For maximum flavor, they used superior-quality mineral water from deep underground. They think of themselves as “backseat” brewers enabling their consumers' happy dining.
Ishikawa Brewery's labels exemplify the company's classic style. The colors were selected to compliment the personalities of the beers. In the center of each label appears an illustration either of a traditonal-looking ship or of the brewery building, itself. Both are depicted in a Japanese style, making the labels as rich in local color as are the company's brews.

At the beginning, New Year pictures were only used to convey blessing. As time went by, this form of art has extended to reflect social and daily life of the new China after establishment in 1949. This book presents carefully-selected New Year pictures created from the 1950s to1990s, and categorizes them into the following chapters: portraits, celebration events, military affairs and national defense, international affairs, folk life, traditional festivals, national unity, and cultural education. THE HISTORY OF JAPANESE TATTOO
Japanese tattooing transformed from punishment to decoration. At the beginning of the Meiji period, to make a good impression on the West, the Japanese government outlawed tattoos. Yet traditional tattooing continued underground and can still be found on the bodies of the underclass, such as firemen, laborers, Oirans (courtesans) and gangs.
Irezumi ( 入れ墨 ) is the Japanese word for “tattoo” but suggests disapproval of the practice. Horimono ( 彫り物 ), however, meaning to engrave, often refers to traditional Japanese

tattooing because it implies positivity and artistry. More recently, wabori ( 和彫り ) was created to indicate specifically Japanese tattoos, and tebori ( 手彫り ) Japanese hand tattooing.

Furthermore, a Japanese tattooist is called horishi. Once a tattooist debuts, he will be given the title “Hori” ( 彫 ) before his name, stating his mastery of craft and artisanship. Fireman of the Edo period

Japanese tattooing can be traced back to the Jomon period, with evidence showing that many clay figurines from ancient tombs were engraved on the face. The earliest documentation of this tradition is the Records of the Three Kingdoms compiled in the 3rd century, which recorded that “men young and old, all tattoo their faces and decorate their bodies with designs”. By the 7th Century, influenced by Chinese culture, tattooing in Japan morphed from being decorative to punitive. Nihon Shoki, finished in 720, first recorded Japanese tattooing as an act of punishment: the Emperor declared Hamako Muraji's rebellion was punishable by the death penalty, but the Emperor sentenced him to be tattooed as an alternative punishment. During the Edo period (1603–1868), Japanese tattooing turned into a method of punishment for criminals who commit severe crimes, such as murder, betrayal, and treason.

For beginners, this book also includes a whole section for collage creation and displays a large number of collage works.

KIHIN brand is known as the best quality brand among Maana oranges. The small, thin-skin orange has a delicious sweet taste complimented with a bit of sourness that make the brand stand out. In addition to the highlight of the taste, designers want to accent the brand with an appealing regionality of the production area. Because the Chinese characters of KIHIN(貴賓) is sometimes too difficult even for the Japanese to read, the designers replaced their core with their corresponding Japanese (katakana) alphabets

Hay Market is a restaurant set in the sprawling grounds of the Hong Kong Jockey Club. With Hong Kong Jockey Club’s pedigree as a British Colonial entity, the basis of the brand concept and language is British eccentricity. Inspired by vibrant jockey silks with centuries of history, the restaurant’s visual language is an eclectic mix of bold geometric shapes juxtaposed with vintage British typography and Victorian illustrations from old advertisements. The brand's logo is a playful update on classic letterforms and also functions as a blank canvas, allowing for quirky permutations when combined with different illustrations.

The stories in this book are collected from a website called Chatroulette. At first sight, the book is closed. We can’t read it. Only an excerpt of the story on the cover seduces us. To find out more, the reader has to tear off the cover, then the second page, the third and so on. All the pages are pre-cut for easy tearing. As time goes by, the book disappears. On pink paper are printed sexual stories. Each story is separated by a pixel pattern that grows more dense as the reading goes on. Finally everything disappears. Bronze Inscriptions
Small Seal Script
There was another script in use in the Shang dynasty in addition to the oracle inscription: bronze inscriptions. They had been used for more than 1,200 years, from the Shang dynasty to the end of the Spring and Autumn Period (770BC–221BC). This script is called the Bronze Script was because the characters were cast in bronze bells and vessels–symbols of power and status. Based on the identifiable 2,420 characters, included in Jinwen Bian, the most basic reference work of bronze inscriptions, most of them are compound ideograms, vivid as drawings. And the content of those bronze in-scriptions concerns the achievements of ancestors and princes as well as records of major historical events.
Basing on the Large Seal Script, the Prime Minister of the Qin dynasty (221BC—207BC) unified variant forms of characters in different states, transforming them into the Small Seal Script as the formal script for China. Compared to the Large Seal Script, the Small Seal Script is more concise, regular, and coordinated, with more orderly character patterns and weaker pictorial features. More importantly, this reform rendered all characters as rough block shapes. The Small Seal Script was popularly used until the late Western Han dynasty(202BC—AD8), when it was replaced by the Clerical Script.
Large Seal Script
The couplet written in large seal script by Zhang Taiyan (1868–1936), a Chinese philologist, textual critic, philosopher, and revolutionary in the late Qing Dynasty © Wikimedia Commons
Originating from the late Western Zhou dynasty (1046 BC –771 BC), the Large Seal Script was widely used in the State of Qin during the Spring and Autumn Period (770 BC–221 BC). The Large Seal Script is roughly referred to scripts before the emergence of the Small Seal Script, so it is transitional. It shows two significant developments: the lines became straighter, simpler, and more even and the structure was in better order, laying the foundation of the block feature of Chinese characters.

Clerical Script The Clerical Script assumed its immature, “proto-clerical” form in the State of Qin during the Warring States period. It was more concise than the Small Seal Script, but assumed a kind of vulgar and less- standardized form, which nevertheless became popular. When the Emperor Qin Shi Huang standardized the writing system, the writing of the Clerical Script was influenced as well. To achieve a more convenient and effective way of writing, the Clerical Script was developed into a broader and flatter shape, with its horizontal strokes longer than the vertical ones. The emergence of the Clerical Script marked a milestone in the history of Chinese characters, for it marks a watershed between pictorial scripts and straight-line based scripts, which are composed of horizontal strokes, vertical strokes, left-falling strokes, dots, turning strokes, etc. Furthermore, several modifications and simplifications made in the clerical script set the basic form for present-day characters.

Optical illusions can be seen everywhere in our lives, from interior design, installation, 3D art, product, to brand identity, book cover, and typeface design. They can always draw a wide public attention and bring economic benefits. Brand Identity for this fishing baits shop was inspired by the silhouette of the kanji " 魚" (pronounced “sakana”, meaning "fish" in English). By using only black and white, the designer intended to emphasize the outline of this character. In the poster, the designer also tried to break the original structure of the kanji and make its broken pieces collapse while maintaining its recognizability. - 30 -

INTERVIEW Why do you create such fierce visuals?
What are your common approaches to produce a fierce visual effect?
Where do your inspirations come from?
It’s a bit a tricky question, because it’s not my intention to create only fierce arts. I just want to do my best with a theme I got from a client—that’s all the secret. Fantasy art is not my top theme. When I was younger I used to paint graffiti, so some street arts themes are still close to my heart. I also like Swiss design and Polish poster, architecture, photography, movie, fashion, etc. It will be awesome to make more posters, covers, illustrations for music albums, maybe something for fashion company. Themes through which I can express my inspirations and interests will be great.
There is no certain rules. Every theme needs totally different approach. Usually I will try to make a few fast and messy sketches on the paper to find a best composition of the mood and scene that I have in my mind. After that I will start sketching and painting on computer. And this latter stage takes the most of the time.
Paintings, movies, photography, fashion, architecture, design, music. Inspiration can be everywhere and everything can be an inspiration. Sometimes some random shapes or colors can bring a cool idea—cloud shape, element of small architecture, human pose, street scene or even color of sky can bring a good idea.

As a kind of visual experience, what do you think about the "chaos" in graphic design?
What are your common approaches to produce a "chaotic" visual effect?
It can look beautiful or it can look ugly. But the visual experience of chaos is a matter of interpreting the nature of chaos. Design is mostly interpreted individually and everyone probably has his own definition where chaos starts and where it ends.
It has all to do with the information you would like to provide in your design. If you have some elements you want to use in your design, to push them into extremes and you will cause the effect of chaos. Or you sit in front of your final design and you start to destroy it, ripping it apart in all elements. But in chaos there is a specific order, so there is no certain approach to produce chaos. - 24 -

CHAOTIC
REMARKABLE GRAPHIC STYLES Since the end of the 19th century, our aesthetics have been challenged chaotic visuals. But there are many more stories behind the chaos in art. This book digs into chaotic art heritage in human history, and features the most exciting graphic designs distinguished with chaotic styles, which have been broken down into four different approaches:
BLACK HAND PATH—OBFUSCANT "Obfuscant", which refers to the act of obfuscating content, is a word coined by the rap group Blackhandpath. Being transparent to the content, the artwork derives from the actual lyrics. As the lyrics get mashed, the information gets destroyed, the digital comes into play and the cover is an algorithmic dance between its own corruption obfuscating the artwork and building identity.

As a tribute to the chaotic art refined by the courageous predecessors, as well as an applause to the chaotic visuals nourished by our contemporary designers, it serves as a bridge between artistic ideals and graphic communication, between puzzled readers and expressive designers.

cross-legged posture. The advantage of this pose is that
it can compose the body, mind, and spirit into an organic ho e fac tat ng a comforta e s tt ng e per ence he metal skeleton near the body tail vertebrae is slightly ele-

body to keep a straight, natural back and also effectively reduces the pressure caused by cross-legged sitting.

Alternating between sitting high and sitting low during the workday provides welcome variation. When leaning forwards, we feel most comfortable sitting fairly high up, but when leaning back, it is nice to sit low and put one’s feet up. Red is one of the three primary colors. In different cultural contexts, red means d fferent th ngs As ans ce e rate happ e ents th red whereas westerners use red to represent danger and caution. Both western and eastern ancient aristocrats used red to indicate their identity because red dye was hard to obtain, making red clothes or red decorations luxurious items. The stimulating red color appearing in modern costumes often represents liveliness, enthusiasm, refreshment and honor.
Black is a non-reflective achromatic color. When mixed in with a ar et of co ors ght re ect t d m n sh unt the ght d es out in black areas and the only color seen is black. White is one of the achromatic colors, and that reflects light of all wavelengths. In the West, white sends a positive message, with it being the thematic color of church for ceremonies like weddings. In the East, white contains negative implications, with the funeral attire being white. There are ghosts dressed in white, white impermanence and other iconic aspects of white in the Eastern cultures. Most hospital uniforms are white for the color conveys concision, honesty and reliability.
Orange is the color between yellow and red. It is similar to the color of sunset and suggests a romantic sense of leisure, as do the sun, o ers and r pe fru t he use of orange n garments can represent e tra ers on ac t con dence and jo range s m der than red and more demure than yellow.

FASHION SKETCHING
Yellow is one of the three primary colors, also the color with the h ghest degree of re ectance e o often mp es ea th and po er with it being the color used exclusively by the aristocracy in ancient times. During wartime, yellow ribbons were used to signify waiting and hope, which is why yellow can also mean, happy, bright, and optimistic. When yellow is added to other colors, the image may appear muddy. So when applying yellow to clothing, be careful to maintain the lightness and purity of the color.
Gray is the transitional color between black and white. The color is reminiscent of the ashes after burning, environmental pollution, haze and gray wolves. Gray blends in easily with the environment, and is a good matched with the main colors. When it becomes the main color, it suggests mystery. Because of the gray's characteristics, even if gray clothing becomes dirty, it will appear to be unsoiled, so is often used for casual wear.

The Picnic — Kvadrat Stockholm Furniture Fair 2013
Renowned design duo Raw-Edges designed the Kvadrat stand for the Stockholm Furniture Fair 2013. "The Picnic" featured a massive wooden construction of Dinesen Douglas Fir and a textile installation consisting of 1,500 straps made out of a selection of twenty different Kvadrat textiles. The designers envisioned recreating a picnic in an enchanted forest atmosphere. The design concept was: wooden cabin, soft roof tiles, fish skin and picnic under a weeping willow, all mixed in a massive pot with Kvadrat swatches. It had served a commercial fair, having created a bit of relaxed surreal situation with a very warm welcome. The stand was build out of two main elements: the wooden structure and the textile straps hanging from the ceiling. The wooden structure functioned as a display area for the Kvadrat swatches and correspondsed with the appearance of the wooden cabin. ade from ouglas ir from the anish floor company inesen, the horizontal wooden panels were angled in such a way so they can hold the textile samples, allowing visitors a closer look. The impressive textile installation resembles vertical roof tiles and creates a three-dimensional volume. Also functioning as a space divider it created, an intimate space within the big exhibition hall.

The Andy Warhol Temporary Museum
The Andy Warhol Temporary Museum was a cultural space within a commercial space. It was designed to host the exhibition "Andy Warhol - Icons | Psaier Artworks and the Factory," which included a total of 32 original works by the American artist. The museological space avoids the idea of having neutral white exhibition spaces, and related to the exhibited artworks through the creation of a strong visual context that resembled the artist's imagination. The museum recreated an environment that was both pop art and industrial, through an unusual material: metal paint cans. The expository structure set in the central plaza of a mall, featured an abstract exterior that was extremely appealing and assumed an iconographic character with clear links to Pop Art. The interior was designed as an enclosed introspective space, entirely defined by continuous walls, benefiting from a transparent plastic screen cover.
This cover has the dual function of allowing light to enter from the exterior and assuring the visual relationships between the two confronting spaces, the museum and the shopping mall. This solution captures the curiosity of visitors, calling out to all those wandering in the higher galleries of the commercial space. fluid succession of four exhibition rooms, thematically organized, resulted in a new pathway that challenges the organic symmetry and rationality of the main square. The two entrances to this small museum, one at each extremity, were located at strategic points in order to maximize the attention according to the flow of the people walking around its perimeter. Having received more than 100,000 visitors, the Andy Warhol Temporary Museum sought to contribute to the dissemination and promotion of art, being free and accessible to all visitors.

As the second volume of the series, Show Time 2 has selected over 70 projects and divided them into two parts—Business Exhibition and Culture Exhibition—to explore the art of exhibition. The vast amount of photos facilitates a vivid reading experience, while the "Hava Nagila: A Song for the People" was an exhibition that celebrates the breadth and depth of the song's rich musical and cultural trajectory. It traces the song's hundred-year journey from a shtetl in Eastern Europe, to communities of early Jewish settlers in Palestine, to the banquet halls of America where it remains a center piece of both communal memory and popular culture. Photographs and digital images of people dancing, performing or listening to the song and related materials were displayed on the walls.

In exploring how to simultaneously and coherently play five landmark versions of the song within a small space, the designers began to explore how geometries and materials can focus, reflect and absorb sound. The design of the exhibition features giant parabolic reflectors that formed isolated cones of sound that define the space, while carpet tiles served triple duty on floors, walls and ceilings as containers that absorbed reverberations. Techniques developed specifically in this exhibition were utilized to laser-engrave texts and signature images directly into the carpet pile.

LOCATION » Los Angeles, US There is IZUMO shrine, one of the most important shrine in Shimane Japan. “The clouds we can see there, has beauty but mysterious image. I wanted to show those images on this design,” explained the designer, “I'd like people to feel the delicate of beauty, which Japanese have, and Japanese atmosphere when they visit here so that they will think that they want to visit Japan. I'd like to make this restaurant as one of an element for Japanese reconstruction.” He put 25000 of wooden sticks, which was shaped like drum stick on the ceiling. In order to increase a reality of clouds, he has calculated the focal length between eye line and wooden sticks and use that length for the stick length and also made difference on the distance between stick each other so that to make a stereoscopic effect to wooden cloud.

Before BranD was established, the founder Gengli Lin has been engaged in the magazine industry. With gratitude and enthusiasm, he hoped to make a magazine conveying global creativity. At the end of 2011, he named the magazine as “BranD”, and quickly formed an editorial team. In 2012, when the magazine industry took a downturn,
BranD was born. The first issue was themed on “SpectrumISM”, which was in collaboration with Pantone. In 2015, BranD won Red Dot Design Award and iF Design Award, and was recommended by the Alliance of German Designers, ico-D Hong Kong and design centers in Thailand, Germany and Denmark. In 2017, BranD received favorable reviews from graphic designers around the world for its high-quality contents and avant-garde design. In 2019, BranD stood out internationally and won numerous awards.
BranD is available in English and Chinese versions and sold in more than 50 countries. For BranD , the “next page” is more than information, but also an artwork for collection.
2021F Issue 60
The 9th Anniversary Issue—No. 9 Storm Issue 60, the 9th year of BranD . Since 2012, BranD has walked through an inspirational journey of design with readers for 9 years. Issue 60 happens to be the last issue of 2021, and it is a good conclusion to the nine-
year history of the editorial department. We are looking forward to a storm—more intense changes that can cut off all our old ideas and reconstruct a brand-new connection with the outside world. Therefore, in the 9th
anniversary of BranD , we pick “No. 9 Storm” as the theme for Issue 60. In this issue, we not only pay homage
to 38 globally renowned designers and share their unique design philosophies and methods, but also invite 9 emerging designers or design studios from 8 different countries to discuss the future of design together. We
hope to explore how a work is created and built within the process of stimulation, destruction and reconstruction. he readers can appreciate the classic designs while obser ing the most a ant garde trend in the design field
currently. et s ump into the uni erse to tal with the greatest historical personages fly toward the eye o storm to eel the cra y charms brought by design storm

The Theater of Art Beyond Time and Space Art, is always the muse of designers, and a catalyst for design inspiration and creativity. Every art movement, as
well as every avant-garde artist, awakens the restless heart of designers, and guides them to reimagine the world. In this issue, the BranD team invited four emerging Chinese artists: Yan Cong, who intends to shake the world o contemporary art
iang ata, who creates a boundless uni erse through daily routine
ang
engsha, who
overturns the impression of traditional Chinese ink and wash painting; and Lu Shan, who depicts a kaleidoscope of
life with her overwhelming artist instinct. Through the art power, BranD hopes to release readers imagination about
the world and let the free spirit of art run through their soul.
For a i id and uni ue presentation on the our artists artwor s and ideas, BranD in this issue abandoned the
ordinary editorial logic, and boldly planned the first e perimental publication o art series, e ploring an artistic
experience that is one of a kind both in content and design. Under the creative theme “The Theater of Art Beyond Time and Space”, four artists have magical conversations with four literary characters, expecting to provoke
readers into arious interpretation and imagination, create di erent plays, and let the stories continue indefinitely

Tell Me White Have you noticed that people are drowning in the overloaded information and there is less space leaving for
them to breathe? The increasing unread messages on phone, ever-growing to-read lists, and numerous articles collected rom the social media yet ne er read

Facing such an age of information explosion, the editorial team have decided the theme of this issue as “Tell Me White”.

Four Legs of Self-Publishing In the era of market segmentation, individual reading needs have become more and more obvious, and the form o publishing has been redefined accordingly. s a result, sel publishing has rapidly de eloped into an emerging
power in the publishing industry. el publishing not only satisfies the indi iduali ed e pression o the creators, but also explores diverse book structures and bindings from a modern perspective, breaking the previous simple way
to present the works. The bookstore industry, which is closely connected with the publishing industry, also extends a branch—independent bookstore—that has a personal book selection standard. Bang! BranD Band—Design for Music “Music is like a close friend who knows us best. Then who is the close friend of music? I think it is the visual art for music.”
ith the digiti ation o music records, the design or records has become more and more significant. eople
collect not only the music, but also its design. In fact, art and music are inseparable. The Fauvism master Henri
Matisse said: “One tone is just a color; two tones are a chord, which is life.” In the history of art, there are countless musical elements in famous paintings. Besides, having undergone countless music movements and design transformations, the visual design for music records has evolved into various forms from the initial pure art.
No matter how great the music is, no matter how the media changes, the purest happiness is where we invariably
return to in the end. When we open a record album carefully and put it on the record player, we enact a ceremonial act that brings us happiness and inspiration. After 8 months of editing and design, this issue becomes one of the top recommendations for collection. Its attitude shines a dazzling light on the design for music.

Come and Wrestle: Designer VS Foreign Typeface ecently, the nternet has been bu ing with articles about the de elopment trend o oreign type ace design.
ter
the publication of BranD Issue 54 whose theme is Come and Wrestle: Designer vs. Hanzi , the editorial team came
up with the idea to have interviews with designers from different cities around the world based on their extensive
research and new understanding on foreign typefaces for the layout of magazine. They learned that type design is challenging no matter in which script through the detailed and meticulous responses of interviewees, and there is always a story about type design behind the design. Designer needs to take various problems into consideration
during the type design process. Each effort is like an attack. Perseverance is the most basic principle for designer no matter the project is simple or complicated, so type design somehow is like a sportsmanship. Designer seems to shout Come and wrestle, type ace when he or she designs an i or oreign type ace.
