SENECA CASINOS
SENECA CASiNoS ANNouNCES 2013 SuMMER RuSH CoNCERT SERiES One of the most thrilling summer concert lineups in the Great Lakes Region is back for another year and packs some serious heat for entertainment lovers. Summer Rush at Seneca Casinos includes some of the world’s very best entertainers as well as unique promotions on the gaming floor and the ever-popular fireworks displays for the Independence Day holiday. June Entertainment
Summer Rush kicks off with arguably the world’s premier blues musician, B.B. King, at Seneca Allegany Events Center in Salamanca, N.Y., on Saturday, June 8. Coming the following weekend on Saturday, June 15 to Seneca Niagara Events Center in Niagara Falls, N.Y., is 1980s new wave rock band The Go-Go’s, whose debut album “Beauty and the Beat” continues to be the only No. 1 album entirely written and performed by an all-female band. The following weekend on Saturday, June 22, comedian Paul Reiser from the TV sitcom “Mad About You” takes the stage at Seneca Allegany for an evening of stand-up comedy. For the final weekend in June, the entertainment returns to Seneca Niagara with one of America’s consummate singer-songwriters, Jackson Browne, who will perform with special guest Sara Watkins on Saturday, June 29.
July Entertainment
World-renowned adult humor comes to Seneca Niagara on Independence Day weekend, as Drew Carey – famous for his roles in “The Drew Carey Show” and “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” and now host of the long-standing game show “The Price Is Right” – comes to Niagara Falls on Saturday, July 6. The comedy continues back at Seneca Allegany on Friday, July 12 when Jeff Dunham, one of the America’s most successful comedians, displays his hilarious ventriloquism routine with a host of characters such as Walter, Peanut, Achmed the Dead Terrorist and José Jalapeño on a Stick as part of his “Disorderly Conduct” tour. The following night on July 13, world-renowned psychic Sylvia Browne will provide an evening of insights and live readings at Seneca Niagara Events Center. Rounding out the month on Saturday, July 27, one of the most successful country groups of all time, ALABAMA, comes to Salamanca as part of its “Celebrating 40 Years” tour.
8
August Entertainment
Summer Rush continues with more ways to make people laugh this August, as former “Saturday Night Live” star and “30 Rock” cast member Tracy Morgan performs on Saturday, August 10 in Niagara Falls. Six days later, stand-up comes to Salamanca as Howie Mandel, one of the judges on “America’s Got Talent,” delivers an evening of laughs on Friday, August 16. On the last day of the month, Saturday, August 31, 1980s pop-rock will be in full swing inside Seneca Allegany Events Center, as Huey Lewis and the News takes the stage for its “‘Sports’ 30th Anniversary Tour.”
September Entertainment
Technically, it is still summer in early September – and for that reason, Seneca Casinos will keep the Summer Rush entertainment rolling through the first weekend of the month. On Saturday, September 7, comedian Brad Garrett will take the stage at Seneca Niagara Events Center with his trademark low-pitched voice. Garrett is well known for his role as Robert Barone on “Everybody Loves Raymond” and now plays the role of step-father Max Green on the brand-new TV sitcom “How to Live with Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life).”
Summer Entertainment at the Bear’s Den Showroom
Each Events Center location seats up to 2,400 people with no seat further than 100 feet of the stage – and also has two high-definition oversized video screens to give everyone the “best seat in the house.” But for those who want a more intimate setting for entertainment, the Bear’s Den Showroom at Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel has 440 theater-style seats on three sides of the stage, each with spectacular views that are no further away than 40 feet.
Blues legend B.B. King kicks off Summer Rush entertainment at Seneca Casinos.
The Bear’s Den lineup is packed for June, featuring Grammy Award– winning jazz musician Marcus Miller on Friday, June 7; blues artist and slide guitar master Sonny Landreth on Saturday, June 8; 1970s heartthrob David Cassidy on Friday, June 21, and; an acoustic fingerpicking guitar performance during An Evening with Leo Kottke on Saturday, June 22. Even more entertainment is on tap for July, including blues artist Tommy Castro and the Painkillers on Friday, July 12; R&B singer-songwriter Will Downing on Saturday, July 13; a two-night gig by Neil Diamond impressionist Jay White on Friday, July 19 and Saturday, July 20, and; Grammy Award–winning guitar virtuoso Larry Carlton on Saturday, July 27. Confirmed acts so far for August include Stick Men featuring Tony Levine, Pat Mastelotto & Markus Reuter on Friday, August 2, and Buckwheat Zydeco on Saturday, August 3.

Q&a with the StarS: Jeff Dunham anD DaviD CaSSiDy by Melanie Ann Hulick Most of us have a circle of friends with similar personalities; with similar tastes in music, comedy, hobbies, and views on the world. What if I told you there are a group of friends who are anything but similar in personalities, interests, or views, but just happen to be the most popular group of friends in the United States and around the world? And, what if I told you these friends have been viewed on YouTube more than a half a billion times? Could you guess who these friends are? They are none other than Walter, the grumpy retiree; Bubba J., the beerswilling, NASCAR-loving red neck; the furry and manic Peanut; José Jalapeño, the spicy pepper from South of the border, and; Achmed the Dead Terrorist. Quite a group, huh?
In 2006, Dunham catapulted to the top of the comedic art category with his first one-hour Comedy Central prime time special, “Arguing with Myself,” which he also produced. His Comedy Central specials that followed – 2007’s “Spark of Insanity,” 2008’s “A Very Special Christmas,” and 2011’s “Controlled Chaos” – set record ratings and made the comedian a global phenomenon. He also wrote a New York Times bestselling autobiography, “All by My Selves: Walter, Peanut, Achmed and Me.” Dunham’s impact on pop culture is hard to replicate, especially with his character catchphrases now a part of our vernacular, such as Achmed’s “Silence! I Keel You!” and José Jalapeño’s “On a Steek!” It is no surprise that Time magazine named him “the most popular comedian in the United States” and Forbes named him to its Celebrity 100 list of the most powerful entertainers for three years running.
All are creations of comedian and ventriloquist Jeff Dunham. Dunham was fascinated by ventriloquism at an early age. His parents gave him a toy Mortimer Sneed dummy that included an instructional record album, and the rest is history. By the age of 10, the willing student was performing in front of anyone who would watch. After graduating from Baylor University, Dunham moved to Los Angeles, where his career sky-rocketed on the national comedy club circuit. He soon found himself appearing on The Tonight Show and Late Night with David Letterman.
HULICK: Do you write all of your own material? DUNHAM: I write a good share of my own material. When a good joke is written by someone else, I buy it and use it. HULICK: I know picking a favorite character for you is probably viewed as picking a favorite child, as it is for a singer picking a favorite song. But if you were to be stranded on a deserted island and could only take one of your characters along, which one would it be and why? DUNHAM: It goes without saying that Achmed certainly has allowed me to break through in places that otherwise might have remained closed for a while. His clips on YouTube put whatever ride it is that the characters and I are on into a very high orbit. The shows in Europe are certainly a testament to that. Folks in London, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Helsinki, and Oslo were NUTS for the characters, especially Achmed. So is he my favorite? I couldn’t say that and hurt Peanut’s feelings...
The comedian and his circle of friends continue to tour the world, packing arenas not only state-side but also in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe, where a portion of his audience doesn’t even speak English, but somehow manage to get the humor. As busy as Dunham is, he did take a few minutes to answer a couple of questions for me via email, and even went as far as to thank me for my time. Enjoy.
HULICK: What is the process of creating a new character – do you see or hear something that triggers it and do you have a new character in the works? DUNHAM: It’s all about time and circumstance. If I feel it’s time, and there’s a new DVD down the road in the foreseeable future, I start thinking, considering, and looking. But on equal grounds, sometimes a new guy just pops into my head and he seems too good to pass up. HULICK: At what point did you know, without a doubt, that you made it? DUNHAM: I pride myself on the fact that I’ve put a fresh patina on an old, tired, and sad art. Ventriloquism is hip and fun again! DaviD CaSSiDy Friday, June 21 | Seneca Niagara Bear’s Den Singer-songwriter and actor David Cassidy has had such a tremendous career both in front of and behind the camera since he was cast as the eldest son, Keith Partridge, on the hit sitcom “The Partridge Family,” which aired from 1970 to 1974. He added the titles of producer, director, and writer over the years, and has excelled in these fields as well. He became the highest paid performer by the age of 21, selling out major concert arenas everywhere he went and gaining an official fan club with a membership that exceeded even Elvis Presley and the Beatles. Major success in TV and live concerts was just the beginning for Cassidy; he went on to star as Joseph in the original Broadway production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and other stage shows. He would later go on to star in the $75 million extravaganza “EFX,” which he helped entirely re-vamp into the most successful production in Las Vegas. In addition, his amazing talent with “The Rat Pack Is Back!” and “At the Copa” garnished him the titles of 14
Best All-Around Performer, Best Singer, Entertainer of the Year, and Show Star of the Year. Cassidy’s time-enduring song, “I Think I Love You,” was the best-selling record in 1971, and he has earned several nominations for Grammy awards in his singing and recording years. Nowadays, Cassidy raises and races horses, which is one of the things we talk about in the following conversation. He will also be touring the country to speak about the devastating disease Alzheimer’s, which has a very personal connection to the singer. With all his many successes, Cassidy still prefers performing live and making a connection with his fans and the audience. “I’ve been blessed... I’ve always done what I love to do,” he said. “Many people in the world never get that opportunity, and to be successful in it is just incredible.”
HULICK: You have accomplished so much over your career. What’s one of the things you’re most proud of? CASSIDY: My son Beau. He’s 22 and he’s a terrific human being and a great talent. He’s just starting his professional career. HULICK: Is he following in dad’s footsteps? CASSIDY: I would say his dad’s, grandfather’s, grandmother’s, uncle’s and mom’s footsteps as well. You know his mom was a very good songwriter. He’s just a fantastic human being... that’s what I’m most proud of personally. HULICK: As far as your music goes, do you like playing live? CASSIDY: I love playing live now more than I ever have. I have a remarkable band and they’re all prodigies and they’ve been with me for 10 years now. I’m a very lucky guy. HULICK: Have you ever played Seneca Casino before? CASSIDY: Never. I’ve played Niagara Falls before in both the U.S. and Canada and I’ve been to Western New York a few times, but it’s been about three or four years since I’ve been in the area. HULICK: You are going to love this venue called the Bear’s Den. CASSIDY: Great! I heard it was pretty cool. I hope you will come. HULICK: Are you kidding me? CASSIDY: (laughs) No, I’m not... I hope you’ll be there. I promise you there will be surprises for you. I’ll be doing all the hits from the Partridge Family and my solo stuff as well. You know because I worked on Broadway and the West End then moved on to produce shows in Las Vegas for six years, doing more than 2,000 shows with original music, I never got the chance to play my hits. So I started going out and touring in the early years of the 2000’s. I went back to Australia, Europe, and of course all over the U.S. and Canada. It was like opening up an old chest and you find all these jewels in it – that’s what these songs are, and I have such a connection with them and a fondness for them. HULICK: You mentioned Broadway... you’ve had tremendous success in theatre and musicals. You were actually the one that first starred in the role of Joseph in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” CASSIDY: Yes… that was 1983. You know, you said I was going to love this venue. I really love playing these intimate rooms where you can really connect with the audience and they become part of the show. I’ve played large places and outdoors with 12,000 to 15,000 people, but my preference is to play the smaller and more intimate rooms so I can connect to the fans. HULICK: Let’s talk about the Partridge Family a little bit. Were you the only choice to play Keith Partridge or did you have to audition for the part? CASSIDY: No, I wasn’t the only choice. I did six auditions and they ended up choosing two different actors for each part. So I had to go through all the hoops. I had done a number of dramatic shows before I did the pilot for the Partridge Family, and I became kind of an odd television actor. In one season I think I did like seven, eight, nine guest shots on dramatic shows like Bonanza and Iron Side, which was far from a half-hour situation comedy like the Partridge Family. But I learned a lot from those other shows and it was a great experience. HULICK: Then came this enormous singing career. CASSIDY: Yes. It was an unbelievable experience touring around the world for five years and playing stadiums and breaking attendance records at the Astrodome and places like that. It truly was amazing, but I was working seven days a week. I was recording at night, doing concerts on the weekends, flying back and filming the Partridge Family for 12 hours a day. And then after filming the Partridge Family, I’d go over to the studio and start recording as both the Partridge Family and David Cassidy. So it was constant. I think I took only two weeks off during the course of every year. It was a lot of work, but it was also incredibly rewarding.
HULICK: There was no shortage of Partridge Family merchandise back when the show was originally on. Do you have all the collectibles like lunchboxes, dolls, comic books, and toys? CASSIDY: I can’t say I have all of it, but I have many things. People have sent them to me over the years. I used to have them all in a special closet and I’ve moved so many times I finally decided to just put them in storage. I have auctioned a number of them off – and, in fact, I’m having a very big charity auction at the Hard Rock where a lot of my concert outfits will be available to bid on. All the monies will go to the Alzheimer’s Association. HULICK: That’s wonderful David. I know your mother had Alzheimer’s. CASSIDY: Yes. She just passed away from it. I’m happy for her that she’s released, because she couldn’t talk or walk. HULICK: You actually go around the country and give speeches on the disease. CASSIDY: I do. I want to try and educate people on it because the largest percentages of our population are the Baby Boomers. We really have just seen the tip of the iceberg I think. So I want to bring education and awareness on this disease and also raise funds for the research to continue aggressively to stop this. I am going to make it a real focus of my life over the next... well, as long as I have breath in my body. HULICK: Can people go to your website David and find out more on how they can help? CASSIDY: Yes, absolutely. Just go to DavidCassidy.com. HULICK: I know that you raise and race thoroughbred horses. What made you get into that business? CASSIDY: My whole life I had horses. My grandfather was a big horse racing fan and he was also a huge baseball fan. He took me to Yankee Stadium for my first time and to Belmont Park. It was so inspiring for me and he was such a big influence on me. I started reading a lot about horses and... I don’t know... I just always had such an affinity for horses. I got my first horse when I was 15. I paid $150. HULICK: I’m sure you still have groupies. CASSIDY: Lots of them. HULICK: What is the wildest or most bizarre place or thing that someone has asked you to sign over the years? CASSIDY: Well... obviously every body part. HULICK: (laughs) Obviously. CASSIDY: (laughs) That’s all I need to say. HULICK: Is there anything that you would go back and change if you were given the chance? CASSIDY: Well, a lot of people would look back and say, if only I hadn’t done this and only if I hadn’t done that... but I think I learned from my mistakes, and that’s what brought me to where I am today. At this moment, I am extraordinarily happy with my life. I am not filled with regrets at all. HULICK: What’s the best thing about being David Cassidy? CASSIDY: Talking to people like you, Melanie, and knowing I’ve had a positive impact on them. Knowing I touched their lives and hopefully inspired them and brought love and happiness to them.

24 hours The lights dim. The crowd roars. Shadows cross the stage and grab instruments. The first note hits, and the room becomes electric. It’s another blockbuster concert at a Seneca Events Center, and everyone is ready to rock. But behind the scenes, so many factors lead to that moment – especially in the 24 hours leading to show time. As the entertainment team at Seneca Casinos will quickly point out, preparations for a concert actually begin months in advance. Some of the first steps can come together quickly – from finding out that a desired act is available for a weekend performance, to negotiating the contract with help from the legal team, to setting up ticket sales with Ticketmaster and Seneca Casino retail outlets, to working with the advertising team to promote the event. And although the entertainment team leads the charge, putting on a successful concert requires an orchestrated effort throughout the entire organization. “From the very beginning right up to and through the show, it’s really an intricate dance to make everything work,” said Kevin Wiech, executive director of entertainment for Seneca Casinos. “So many departments and people contribute to making a concert enjoyable for our guests.” All of the strategic planning that is done weeks and months in advance comes to a head in the final 24 hours before show time. The night before, approximately a dozen people will help with load-in – tackling everything from building the stage, to rigging up lights and video screens, to rolling out electrical cables, to testing audio equipment. Another six to 12 people with the property operations team will begin to mark the aisles in the 2,400-seat Events Center, which includes three sections of seats – with the side sections carefully slanted at an angle for better viewing.
22
to
show time
Meanwhile, the entertainment team is simultaneously working with tour managers, production managers, agents, and the artists themselves to arrange transportation from the airport, coordinate parking for tour buses, and provide security for equipment. They will work with the catering team to provide custom meals at specific locations and times, and will arrange for the housekeeping team to make sure backstage areas are spotless. The hotel team will accommodate artists who have special requests, such as musical instruments to be set up in rooms for practicing. And members of the security department may be needed to act as escorts for big-name celebrities. Less than 12 hours before show time, the box office team will organize tickets for pick-up at the Will Call booth and set up stanchions for an orderly flow of traffic. Not too far away in the Events Center, the entertainment and production services teams continue to test the audio and video components of the show. Besides helping to monitor sound levels and lighting with each act’s management, the Seneca team members also operate four video cameras – two in the back, one on the left side of the room, and a robotic cam on stage. During the show, these provide unique visuals on the two recently installed jumbo-sized video screens on either side of the stage. “We’re one of the only venues in Western New York to have a total high-definition system at 1080p for video,” Wiech said. “The furthest seat is only 100 feet from the stage, but the two screens help make even the back-row guests feel like they’ve got the best seats in the house. Another investment we recently made for both Events Centers was purchasing new digital speaker amplifiers by L-ACOUSTICS®. The speakers take up less space while providing crisp audio and a much fuller sound.”
Depending on the show, the teams might also need to set up tables and drapes for a merchandising table in the Pre-Function Area right outside the Events Center’s doors. In addition, members with the player development team may work with the artist’s agents to arrange VIP meet-and-greets before and/or after the show. About two hours before show time, nearly 20 ushers and ticket-takers meet near the Events Center for a debriefing from the entertainment team. The team explains the evening’s photo and video policy for any media in attendance, discusses protocol for meet-and-greets, distributes ticket scanners, reviews emergency exits and equipment, and shares any other important instructions to help make the evening run smoothly. “It’s quite challenging to make sure all the ‘moving parts’ are working properly in order to provide great hospitality,” said Jonathan Zurek, entertainment manager for Seneca Casinos. “We put a lot of faith in other departments to help us on the day of a show. But once that first note hits and the audience is happy, all that collective work is so fulfilling.” “Each show has different dynamics, and things that are unseen and uncontrollable can happen – from bad weather and delayed flights to missing luggage or even artist illness,” Wiech added. “But our team shares a labor of love and commitment to customer service. They’re passionate, talented, and experienced – they’re our unsung heroes for every show.” To learn more about the latest concerts at Seneca Casinos, please click on “Entertainment” when visiting the websites for Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel and Seneca Allegany Casino & Hotel. 23

the excitement Craps is Considered to be the most exCiting game in any Casino. there are a variety of wagering options and, as a result, it can be a complicated game. there are, however, some simple bets you can make to start – and you can learn the rest as you go. each bet is dependent upon the point value of the uppermost side of two dice that have come to rest after being thrown by a player or “shooter.” Follow the diagram to learn the terminology and rules of this exciting game.

D. DON’T COME: the don’t Come bet may be made any time after a pass Line point has been established. the win-loss rules are the same as for the don’t pass, but the win, loss, or determination of the point is established by the next roll of the dice. Like the Come bet, the don’t Come bet allows a player to bet on each roll of the dice. pass Line, don’t pass, Come and don’t Come bets are paid even money. pass Line and Come bets cannot be removed or reduced after a “Come out point” or “Come point” has been established, however, they may be increased. don’t pass and don’t Come bets may be decreased or removed at any time but never increased or replaced. Odds: a player may elect to make a wager in addition to the original or “flat” bet any time after the point is established. a player may “take” odds on any pass Line or Come bet. a player also may “lay” odds on any don’t pass or don’t Come bet. all odds bets may be removed or reduced at any time. odds are paid based on true odds and will win if the flat bet wins (and vice versa).
a. pass LINE: if you place a bet on the pass Line and the first roll of the dice (known as the “Come out roll”) is a 7 or 11, you win. if a 2, 3, or 12 is rolled, you “crap out” or lose. any other number rolled (i.e., 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10) becomes the pass Line “point.” pass Line bets win if the shooter rolls the point before rolling a 7. if a 7 is rolled prior to the point being made, the shooter “sevens out” and the pass Line bet loses. the shooter continues to roll the dice until he or she sevens out, whereupon the dice pass to the next player. you need not be the shooter to make a pass Line bet. B. DON’T pass: the don’t pass bet is the opposite of the pass Line. that is, the bet wins on the Come out roll if a 2 or 3 is rolled, and loses if a 7 or 11 is rolled. a roll of 12 is a stand-off on the don’t pass Line. any other number rolled becomes the point. to win, a 7 must roll before the point is thrown. if the point is rolled prior to a 7, the bet loses. as before, you need not be the shooter to make this bet. C. COME: you can bet the “Come” at any time after a point has been established. the win-loss rules are the same as for the pass Line. the next roll of the dice determines whether you win or lose, or establish a point which must be rolled before a 7 to win. the Come bet and point are independent of the pass Line point.
E & F. BUY aND LaY BETs: buy and Lay bets pay odds without requiring a flat bet and may be made directly on a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 at any time without waiting for the number to roll the first time. the buy bet is a bet that the number will roll before a 7. a Lay bet is a bet that a 7 will roll before the number. in either case, the wager is paid according to true odds as shown on the accompanying table. a five percent commission or “vigorish” is charged on all buy and Lay bets, either on the amount bet (if it is a buy bet) or on the amount that can be won (if it is a Lay bet). if no decision is made on a buy or Lay bet and the player wishes to take the bet down, the vigorish will be returned to the player. G. pLaCE BETs TO WIN: you may make a place bet on 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 at any time. all odds, buy bets, and place bets may be increased, decreased, taken back by the player, or called “off” (or not working) at any time. Come odds, buy bets, and place bets to Win are always off on the Come out roll unless designated otherwise by the player. the player is responsible for placing all odds and keeping track of all bets. H. FIELD: if 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, or 12 is rolled, you win. all numbers pay even money except 2 and 12, which pay double. Transformed seneca niagara casino Will deliver ‘WoW’ facTor – and You’ll BreaThe easier In 2002, it was no small feat when construction crews transformed the former Niagara Falls Convention Center into Seneca Niagara Casino in just 100 days. More than 10 years later, the AAA Four Diamond Award–winning property houses 4,000 of the latest and greatest slot machines and 100 action-packed table games throughout the gaming floor, and welcomes more than eight million visitors annually. But even the most successful casinos need a makeover to keep things exciting – and that’s just what’s in store for the rest of 2013.
This summer, construction crews will begin a 10-phase process to completely transform the main gaming floor into a brighter, livelier, easier-to-navigate, and even more inviting place for fun. The $26 million project will take place in a virtually seamless fashion, with 200 slots relocated to the mezzanine balcony while a particular section of the floor undergoes renovations. One of the biggest upgrades will be something that guests will not see but will definitely notice. Nearly $6 million will be invested toward a new air filtering system throughout the property. More than double the existing fans and ducts, complete with a computerized system that monitors air quality and continually brings in fresh air from the hotel roof, will be installed to make breathing much easier at Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel. Another major investment will be the removal of Club 101 at the center of the gaming floor and the creation of an entirely new feature bar and live entertainment stage in the southwest corner. The area will be furnished with a dance floor, lounge seats with TV screens, and a whopping HD jumbo screen that rivals those at professional sports venues. As guests walk through the main gaming floor, the layout of slots, table games, and pathways will be completely different. The current format of horizontal and vertical gaming rows will shift to intuitive curved paths that serve to both open up lines of sight and take guests to the main focal points around the perimeter – such as the feature bar, hotel entrance, Promotions Booth, and Thunder Falls Buffet. While walking, guests will not only see a different layout but many new visual features as well. A brand-new carpet with a dramatic design and rich colors of deep red and gold will fill the entire area. Gone will be the old-fashioned and faded sails hanging above the games; in place of those will be canopies with projected lights, as well as new structures above the table games.
A larger, brighter Promotions Booth will be created in the southeast corner of the gaming floor and will include more stations for improved interaction and fewer lines. And, the bar at the entrance to the recently renovated Thunder Falls Buffet will expand further to the right – creating space for a brand-new Keno Bar. Public restrooms throughout Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel are already in the process of a complete transformation. Bright colors, lighted mirrors, new tiles and enclosed stalls with sleek wooden/glass doors are just some of the changes coming to each men’s and women’s room on property. Additional construction under way on property includes renovations to the 22 center suites in the hotel as well as new paint schemes, artwork, and video screens at Thunder Falls Buffet. Finally, a separate multimillion-dollar construction project will take place outdoors starting this summer, as the Seneca Square area between 3rd and 4th streets will undergo a garden makeover. The pedestrian bridge will look especially different, as Native American landscaping, benches, and a garden tour with marked signage will be some of the changes that will make the space a prime picture-taking destination. The nearby streets will feature new trees, seating areas, and decorative fencing – making downtown Niagara Falls even more attractive for local businesses.
Stay tuned for continued updates about Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel in upcoming issues of Seneca Today. In the meantime, please visit the News section at www.SenecaCasinos.com and on the Seneca Casinos apps to learn more about the improvements.

HealtHy eating at the all-new thunder Falls Buffet

It can take effort to eat healthy and keep portions balanced. The best of intentions can go all-for-naught when it comes to eating at a buffet, especially for those who are watching their waistlines. But at the all-new Thunder Falls Buffet at Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel, there are many ways to eat healthy while enjoying flavorful foods.
“The concept of a buffet is normally to overindulge, so our new twist is ‘stealth health’ – a focus on added flavors and freshness,” said Gary McHale, executive chef at Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel. “This is a shift in the way we do things at the buffet. For some, it can take a little getting-used-to, but it’s catching on.”
When the reinvented buffet opened in December 2012, guests noticed more than just a visual makeover: many of the more than 100 food items had a new look as well. Throughout the buffet’s unique stations – such as Asian, Mediterranean, the Salad Bar, and the Central Grille – there was a focus on fresh, healthy, and made-to-order items. It was a change that guests had asked for.
As the all-new buffet enters the summer months, seasonal items such as fresh corn on the cob, fresh broccoli, and lean flank steak have been added to the Central Grille. The Mediterranean station continues to offer many heart-healthy selections that are low in saturated fats and high in protein, such as an antipasti bar, fresh mozzarella, and hummus. And the station’s made-to-order pasta bar
continues to be a big hit, especially among health-conscious guests and those with dietary needs. Options at the station include whole-wheat, gluten-free, and rice noodles, as well as custom sauces. “The great thing about Thunder Falls Buffet is that you can get an entire meal at just one station or mix and match throughout the stations,” said Victor Parra-Gonzalez, culinary sous chef. “You can find the right balance of foods here.” The culinary team makes extra efforts for healthy options at the buffet in a variety of ways, such as having fresh seafood flown in, ensuring no trans fats in any food items, and using alternatives for common items – like having skin-on baby potatoes with no preservatives. The kitchen is in plain view of the guests at each station, and the majority of items are made-to-order – which means the buffet wastes less food and can, therefore, incorporate even higher-quality products than ever before. But of course, a little bit of comfort food in moderation can be good for the soul, which is why the buffet also includes a pizza station and a dessert station. However, McHale said the variety of healthy options will leave guests full and satisfied – which can cut down the urge for “non-healthy” items.
Mushroom and Cheese Ravioli Recipe Chef Victor says: “Try this recipe at home. It’s an example of the custom pasta we can make for you at Thunder Falls Buffet. You’ll enjoy this delicious pan-seared ravioli, which is infused with fresh sage and has a butter and white wine reduction drizzle with honey. This amount will serve approximately four people, and should take about 30 minutes to prepare and just five minutes to cook.”
INgREdIENTS: •6
sheets of pasta dough • ¼ pound of shiitake mushrooms • ¼ pound of cremini mushrooms • 1 shallot • 2 garlic cloves • ½ pound of ricotta cheese • salt and pepper (to taste) • ½ pound of butter • 3 ounces of white wine • 1 ounce of honey • 1 teaspoon of fresh sage • 2 eggs • 1 quart of chicken stock
“By design, the all-new Thunder Falls Buffet is meant to be big on flavor and small on the waistline,” he said. “There’s enough variety so that guests are never bored, and I think they will find some of the ‘healthier’ options to actually be tastier. Finally, I would tell guests ‘don’t be shy’ about letting us know what they want. Our chefs can create custom items, and they really enjoy making our guests happy.” Thunder Falls Buffet is located near the northwest corner of Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel, close to the Seneca Poker Room and the Keno Lounge. It is open seven days a week starting at 11 AM, as well as from 9 AM to 11 AM on Saturdays and Sundays for breakfast. To make reservations, call 1-877-8-SENECA (1-877-873-6322). Guest service is Front-Line at the Front Desk What is one secret to Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel’s 10 years of success in Niagara Falls USA? Smiles. Yes, smiles. Just ask Stephanie Lattore, a front desk agent on property. “I don’t like frowns,” she said. “Personally, I’ve been in customer experiences where I wasn’t treated nicely. So when the roles are reversed and I’m here at work, I don’t want anyone to experience that because of me. I think guests return to Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel because they like the overall experience. They see familiar people, and it feels like ‘family.’” Stephanie is a long-time member of the Seneca Niagara family, as she started in July 2004 in the Environmental Services Department and then joined the front desk team for the hotel tower’s opening on December 31, 2005. That team is responsible for much more than just assisting with the check-in/check-out process and assigning room keys. For example, in a typical day’s work, Stephanie also resolves billing issues, trains fellow employees, and even fills in for a short time at the VIP Guest Services area. “We really are a front line for guest service,” said Stephanie of the front desk team. “Any issue at all – even regarding gaming – can come to us. Questions about valet parking, maintenance issues, you name it – we can end up tackling any sort of issue on any given day.” And for a team that manages more than 17,000 room-nights a month with 98 percent occupancy, that’s quite a bit of extra work. But Stephanie handles all of it with a smile.
DiD You know? Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel has received the prestigious AAA Four Diamond Award for each consecutive year since its eligibility in 2006. Together with its sister property, Seneca Allegany Casino & Hotel, the two casino resorts represent two of the three AAA Four Diamond Award– winning hotels in Western New York for upscale accommodations and outstanding guest service. Only 3.8 percent of the 59,000 AAA Diamond-Rated establishments throughout North America and the Caribbean earn the prestigious AAA Four Diamond rating.
“We sell ‘service,’ and Stephanie is the epitome of that,” said Shawn Hain, front desk manager at Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel. “She’s always pleasant, always smiles, and always goes the extra mile. Stephanie treats guests like family, and she typifies our [AAA] Four Diamond standards by leading by example. I think that’s why many returning guests wait an extra minute in line just to see her.” John Eagle, customer service manager with Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel, agrees with Shawn’s assessment. “Stephanie has a heightened level of caring,” John said. “Her positive attitude has a ‘ripple effect’ – you feel it, and 30 people around you can see it. Then the emotion inspires others to give back, too.” John also shares Stephanie’s notion of ‘family’ as a precedent for delivering outstanding guest service. “I once heard Stephanie say, ‘I have two minutes to develop a relationship with a guest,’” John said. “That’s right along the lines of what I tell our new hires, which is: ‘Treat a guest like your grandma.’ Guest service really is a hallmark of Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel’s 10 years – and the Seneca ‘experience’ is all about emotional connections.” Stephanie said she makes an effort to go above and beyond for each guest, show compassion and understanding, and listen more than anything. John said that’s a winning formula for Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel to achieve another 10 years of success. “We’re the host of the largest party in the area,” he said. “We take pride in guest service, and our goal is to make the experience so good that people want to come back.”

Message from the President
1842
COMMEMORATION OF THE BUFFFALO CREEK TREATY OF The Seneca Nation recently commemorated a very special event in our history: the anniversary of the signing of the Buffalo Creek Treaty of 1842. Having faced social injustice since the first European boat landed, the Native American community has the longest history of discrimination in America. There are countless ways in which the U.S. showed their disregard and contempt for the Native residents of our country, but perhaps one of the most significant and consistent ways was through the taking of our land. Signing of the Buffalo Creek Treaty of 1842 took place following anxious moments when our lands had been sold to Ogden and Fellows, commonly known as the Ogden Company. This sale affected the four Seneca reservations, including Cattaraugus and Allegany. The Treaty of 1842 annulled the sale of our land in so far as the Allegany and Cattaraugus Reservations were concerned, and the Nation was restored all of its rights in respect to these tracts, which we continue to occupy and own. Further, by a provision contained in the Buffalo Creek Treaty, the government agreed to use its influence to protect the lands of the Seneca Indians in the State of New York from all taxes as well as assessments for roads, highways, and other purposes until such lands shall be sold by the Senecas and their possession relinquished. Later in 1857, New York was bound by the “no tax provision” when it stated in reference to the 1842 Compromise Treaty: “The State of New York being a Party to the Treaty of 1842, is of course bound by the provisions, and is also bound not to impose taxes in said reservation.” 56
As a Seneca Indian, I can only imagine how shocked our people were to realize that we had somehow had our land sold out from under us, and that we would have to vacate the lands we considered our homes forever and be moved to unknown lands that had been designated in the west. I believe that it is because of this incident, that we have fought so hard to retain our lands and our Treaty rights in spite of opposition from other governments and individuals making ignorant statements that the “treaties” are really old and extinct documents. It is to that kind of thinking that we state that the Declaration of Independence is older than some of our Treaties, and we are certain that U.S. citizens would not think of discarding the Constitution. We must remind ourselves and others to always remember our history. Let us not forget the construction of the Kinzua Dam in the 1960s, a powerful symbolic position in the lives of Senecas and Native Americans everywhere. Tribes and Native American organizations from all over the country supported the Senecas. The leaders of a dozen of the largest tribes met with senators and members of the House of Representatives to let them know that the breaking of the Treaty would strengthen their determination to defend their lands. It marked a turning point in the lives of Native Americans and Native American rights. The Kinzua Dam construction is a symbol for stolen lands and broken treaties. This history of Kinzua gives us, Senecas, our determination by which we conduct our daily lives. Nya:weh.

The Niagara Arts and Cultural Center (NACC) is a multi-arts center located in the former Niagara Falls High School. The NACC, founded in 2001, was once slated for demolition but is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is home to more than 70 artists, a ballet school, two theaters, two galleries, and a recording studio. Through the hard work of preservationists and a dedicated staff, it has undergone a major renaissance and is now serving as a catalyst for the revitalization of the surrounding neighborhoods.

POW WOW
SEASON
This July 19, 20, and 21, visitors to Seneca Nation of Indians Allegany territory will have the chance to experience The Seneca Casino Veteran’s Pow Wow. The popularity of Pow Wows has grown significantly throughout the past 50 years as opportunities to celebrate Native American identity and expression. All are welcome to attend these events and experience the sights, sounds, and tastes that have made Pow Wows a modern-day cultural phenomenon. “The theme of this year’s Pow Wow is ‘Honor All Families of Veterans,’” said Bud Thompson, co-chair of the event. “This reflects the Seneca people’s deep respect and appreciation for all veterans families, both native and non-native.” The Seneca Casino Veteran’s Pow Wow 2013 takes place at Veterans Park on Broad Street in Salamanca, NY, and will feature drum and dance competitions as well as food and craft vendors. Seneca Pow Wow 2013 committee chair Nancy Williams estimates that Pow Wows began on Seneca Nation territories in the late 1980s. “Although Pow Wows are not a part of the Seneca culture historically, it is understood that early organizers began holding them on Seneca territories as a way to extend their hand in friendship to their neighbors and other Nations from across the country. It is a borrowed custom, but an effort to infuse the Pow Wow with the unique Seneca culture by showcasing the Iroquois dance styles, such as the smoke dance competition and various social dances that highlight local Seneca singers and instruments.”
There are several different stories about how Pow Wows started. Some believe that the Ponca and other Southern Plains Tribes originated the Pow Wow. Another belief is that the government forced Native American tribes on reservations and made the tribes have dances for the public to come and see. Before each dance they were lead through the town in a parade, which is the beginning of the Grand Entry. In any case, it is certain that Pow Wows did not originate in this part of the country, and that over the course of the 20th Century they evolved into intertribal gatherings representing a variety of Native American cultures. Today, Pow Wows are held all across the North American continent and are famous for their pageantry of colors and dance, which have been adapted and changed over time. Thousands of singers, dancers, and vendors follow the Pow Wow trail across the entire continent to celebrate their respective cultures and compete in drum and dance competitions. Pow Wow Etiquette is an imperative part of the experience. Appropriate dress and behavior are required, and attendees should be respectful of the Master of Ceremony’s speaking, the Head male and female dancers position, and the Flag Song or Indian National Anthem (standing and removing of one’s hat is a typical sign of respect to the flag, and special songs). This respect also extends to acknowledging and celebrating the diversities within different cultures. If you are interested in taking pictures, please ask the dancers first. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, drug or alcohol use is prohibited. If at any time you are uncertain about proper etiquette, please consult the Master of Ceremony, Arena Director, or Head Singer.
