Best toys for the 2017 holiday season

The most popular and commercialized toys are not always the “best” toys. Kids that have been exposed to an onslaught of advertising and peer pressure may have a wish list that is actually devoid of quality playthings. We asked our local toy guru, Vanessa Gammel from Tumbleweed Toys to share some tips with us for buying toys for our little ones (and bigger ones) this holiday season.

Vanessa advises that the best toys “are meaningful toys that engage, educate and provide a real benefit to children. We are seeing a lot of science related toys like robots and coding games...and a rise in popularity of family board games and puzzles.”

Scanning the wellstocked shelves at Tumbleweed, one can see that there are no Hatchimals or Fingerlings.

“We like to recommend toys that have longevity and great play value like great construction toys, pretend play items like play kitchen toys and dolls, crafting sets and science kits,” said Gammel.

“We love to help grandparents choose gifts! We carry simple and nostalgic toys that an older generation can relate to. Our advice to grandparents is often to not use the wish list of the “hot toys” that children saw on TV. Our staff are trained to assist customers and we’ll try to curate the perfect gift based on what customers tell us about the children. The old classic toys have stuck around because they are good toys and we love to see them in the hands of today’s generation of kids,” said Gammel.

Life can be fleeting and the notion of leaving “something behind” is a very human tendency. Most of us reach points in our lives where we wonder what our “legacy” will be or will we actually escape this life without leaving a mark or making a lasting impression? Did we make some worldchanging discovery or live a life of quiet desperation?

It is quite commonplace now to not even have a traditional service as many people get cremated and leave their survivors to decide where best to sprinkle their ashes. One thing that is lacking in this scenario, however, is a physical or tangible connection to our deceased loved-ones. Without question, a person leaves a legacy to one’s family in countless ways, but what of the wider community, something that will last into perpetuity? A marker on a grave or a brass plaque on a park bench offer a “place” to remember someone years into the future, but what if one chose to leave a legacy that actually changes countless lives for decades to come?

Legacy gifts are something worth considering when making those important life decisions. By all means, asking your family to “plant that tree” in your memory is worthwhile but perhaps its worth considering growing something much more significant in your community.

There are many foundations that will be pleased to accept one’s “legacy gift.”

One important foundation in Kamloops is Thompson Rivers University’s TRU Foundation. It is infinitely clear that gifts to TRU can have immediate and long-lasting impacts on the institution and it’s beneficiaries — typically the students and the broader community.

“People that give to TRU understand the value of education, they know that education can change a person’s life.

They are motivated to help students realize their dreams, so they can go out and have good careers, and in turn

give back,” points out Karen Gamracy, Director of Advancement at TRU. One recent example of a bequest to TRU was Alvin Grunert, a retired Oakalla Farm prison guard that donated $1.5 million in his will in 2009. Unable to attend university as a young man after leaving the family farm in Yorkton, SK in 1943, Grunert wanted to assist the best and brightest students to succeed and change the world. His generous gift eight years ago has provided 60 students with over $300,000 in award funding.

Gamracy explains that most legacy gifts come from people already connected to TRU in some way be they an alumni, former employee/faculty or parent of a student.

“Generally legacy gifts come from long time donors to the Foundation, that have been giving smaller monthly gifts over many years, and decide to leave a bequest in their will to make a bigger gift and leave a legacy when they pass away. Bequests also come from people who have taught at the university and have had connections with students and know the value of a university education and that we are developing the leaders of tomorrow,” said Gamracy.

“Many donors choose to create an endowment in their name or in the memory of a loved one,” said Gamracy.

It is important that a legacy gift be true to the spirit and wishes of the person it is “remembering.” Gamracy suggests “to make sure you talk it over with your family and financial advisors (bequests can reduce estate taxes on death) and the university. It helps us to discuss with the donor while they are living the purpose of their bequest – in other words what they would like their money to be directed towards, so we can have the proper documentation in place for when they do pass away; they can be assured their gift is going to the purpose they had intended.”

City council holiday news and views

Happy Holidays to you and your family! As we enter a festive season for many, let us celebrate our rich diversity in Kamloops and take time to lend a hand to those who may be struggling.

In my view, it’s been a pretty action packed couple of months in the community and on city council.

The Sept. 30 byelection filled up the city council horseshoe again and brought us a new Mayor and two new councillors. I’m a big fan of our new Mayor.

Ken Christian brings two terms on city council and six terms as a school trustee to his new role.

He brings a collaborative style, a great wit, and a wealth of knowledge.

Our two new council colleagues, Kathy Sinclair and Ray Dhaliwal, have also been great to work with. They bring fresh ideas, huge community experience and networks, and a willingness to work in a team environment.

Their individual campaign platforms were quite different and I think council as a whole needs to support them as they bring forward their views to make our collective work on behalf of the community even stronger.

The council is entering into the last year of a four year term. One major initiative that is nearing completion is the update to Kamplan, our official community plan. This document will help set the course for planning and development in the community over the next ten or so years.

The Kamplan update

has looked to encourage more condo / townhouse living in downtown and along sections of Tranquille Road, while also maintaining areas of the community for single family housing such as Aberdeen. Kamplan contains guidance on many different aspects of community life. For more info, just search for ‘kamplan update’ in your favourite search engine.

The Kamplan revisions should be approved by council in early 2018.

The Ajax Mine application is now in front of the provincial and federal ministers for their decision. It has

been a long and windy road and the council agenda feels lighter and easier (for now) than it has felt the past six and half years. Hopefully, we can now start to heal some of the rifts that have been created by this controversial proposal.

The first ever B.C. Winter Games in 1979 was held in Kamloops. In 2018, the games return.

The organizers have been working incredibly hard.

The torch has been lit.

And they are looking for volunteers. I volunteered

at both the B.C. Summer Games and the Western Canadian Games and had amazing experiences both times.

I helped with needed tasks, I met great people, and met people from all over B.C. and, in fact, Canada. If you have a bit of time, I would recommend volunteering.

“Scheer” gratitude Over the past nine years I have witnessed a number of exceptional speeches in the House of Commons. On November 6, the Hon. Andrew Scheer delivered a very memorable speech commemorating the 150th anniversary of the first meeting of the first Parliament of Canada.

I thought it was fitting to share excerpts of his speech in the spirit of the holiday season.

Mr. Speaker, for 150 years, our Parliament has been a reflection of Canada and Canadians. It is more than a building. It is the embodiment of our national character, its virtues and vices, its strengths and its weaknesses.

It has been burned to the ground and been built back up stone by stone. It has heard the echoes of gunfire, and felt the blast of a bomb that, thankfully, detonated mere minutes prematurely.

It has rung with cheers of victory at the end of two world wars, and it has stood mute witness to the tears of a nation mourning distinguished former members of this House lying in state, from Sir John A. Macdonald to the hon. Jack Layton.

The legislative measures debated and passed in this chamber help Canada progress and, unfortunately, they also sometimes set us back. Our House has seen legislative measures that support our liberties and others that limit them.

This is a physical place, but also an institution, and as an institution made of human beings, the outcomes are not

always perfect. As Canadians, we must not forget our past. We must never be afraid to admit when we have made a mistake and to apologize when necessary……

To those who deny we have anything to be proud of as a country, I would pose a simple question: “Where else would you have rather lived for the last 150 years?” That is not a rhetorical question. It is a straightforward question for which there is only one honest answer. There is nowhere we would rather have lived, no country we would rather call our home, for no country has acquitted herself better at home and abroad than Canada.

It is indisputable that the world has been better off for the last 150 years because of Canada.

Without the sacrifices of our soldiers, sailors, and airmen, more than 100,000 of whom paid

the ultimate sacrifice, while many more came home bearing scars, mental and physical, the world would be more dangerous.

Without the brilliance of our artists, painters, sculptors, writers, singers, and actors, the world would be losing part of its cultural richness.

Without the work of the men and women who cultivate, farm, and develop our incredible landscape, who fish in our three great oceans that surround us, and who work in the towns, plants, and office towers, the world would be poorer, colder, and darker. If we dwell on past mistakes, we miss out on their remarkable successes. We end up taking for granted their contribution to Canada and Canada’s contribution to the rest of the world.

It is time for a little gratitude. Make that a lot of gratitude.

From 100 to zero in two weeks flat J.J. had a choice.

Continue to consume a daily cocktail of diabetes medication or change the way he eats.

For the Vancouver Island resident, it was a no-brainer. He opted for the latter and joined a new clinical trial offered jointly between UBC’s Okanagan campus and Pharmasave.

The study is testing whether a lowcarbohydrate therapeutic nutrition intervention can help patients with Type 2 diabetes get their blood sugar levels under control and reduce their medications.

“My story has been incredible so far,” says J.J. “I’ve gone from 100 units of insulin to zero in two weeks and I’m slowly reducing many other medications for everything from high blood pressure to cholesterol.”

But what does this story mean for others suffering from Type 2 diabetes or

prediabetes? Is a change in diet the silver bullet?

Jonathan Little is an assistant professor in UBC Okanagan’s School of Health and Exercise Sciences and the lead researcher on the study.

The idea that you can “reverse” Type 2 diabetes, or at least get the disease into remission, is a novel and intriguing one that goes against the current dogma that Type 2 diabetes is a chronic progressive disease. Anecdotes and personal stories are valuable in science because they give us an indication of what might be possible, where to go and what to try next. Stories of personal successes like J.J.’s have led to our research team working on a much larger study, in collaboration with Pharmasave across BC, to see whether it is possible to reverse Type 2 diabetes on a larger scale.

It is important to conduct rigorous clinical

trials to determine whether the results are repeatable, robust, and sustainable across most or all individuals who have Type 2 diabetes.

Every person with Type 2 diabetes has a different genetic profile, different environmental exposures, different background so may not respond the same way. We conduct a randomized control trial, such as ours, to help determine if the results apply, on the average, to individuals in spite of all of these factors.

We are aiming to recruit 200 participants across 13 sites in B.C. within the next year. Engaging more people interested in reversing their Type 2 diabetes is our most immediate next step and will help us better understand this disease.

Better at Home program resurfaces at Interior Community Services With nary a hiccup, following Oncore Senior’s Society’s restructuring in July, the United Way’s Better at Home (BAH) program has found a new home at Interior Community Services (ICS) on the north shore.

Dawn Christie, Community Resources Manager has been with ICS for 15 years. Tammy Rosch, Better at Home Program Coordinator, has been with the agency for 7 years. The two have been tasked with running the program as of November 1 and are looking forward to digging in and serving area seniors.

The subsidy-based Better at Home programs include such services as income tax return assistance at tax time, a good morning call service, housekeeping, yardwork and grocery shopping assistance as well as a friendly visitor program.

ICS has been offering social programming since 1967 and is wellequipped to incorporate the BAH program into their repertoire. “It will mesh well with existing programs around food security such as the farmer’s market coupon and food hamper delivery

provider. What will change is that the programming will operate out of the ICS office at 765 Tranquille Road. Programs are provided based on recipients’ incomes.

But just what is a Case Manager, and what does one do?

• At Seasons Health Therapies, our Case Managers are Social Workers with extensive experience working with adults whose lives are changing due to age-related health conditions. Dementias, stroke, and mobility changes can make it seem that aging at home is difficult. A Case Manager is likely your first step to staying in your home as you continue to age.

• A Case Manager secures service contracts and monitors these to make sure you are satisfied with the services you are receiving. Your Case Manager works with you to understand your “standard of care” expectations, then contacts and interviews possible service providers to find the best fit for you. If you wish, your Case Manager can negotiate service contracts on your behalf and / or monitor the services, terminating any providers who do not meet your expectations.

Aging at home, even for the holidays Submitted by Dawn MacKenzie, RRP, CVRP Wouldn’t you rather stay at home as you age, rather than move into a community living setting? You love your life the way it is, and the thought of moving is your worst nightmare. You are used to your home, and you want the space your house provides.

You love your yard, and your neighbours are pretty good. And we all know there is no better place to be than home for the holidays.

If there was only a way to stay, and still be able to do what you have always done, including decking the halls for the holidays, that would be the way you would go, right?

Well you know what?

You are not alone. The majority of people, as they age, feel this way, too. They wish they could do more, and wonder if it’s possible. Most are unaware of the support options to help them carry on at home. So, don’t despair, there is a solution!

Instead of decking the halls like you used to, you will likely have to adapt a bit. You might have to explain to someone else

where that wreath hangs, rather than hanging it yourself. But look at it this way: it will likely cost less for you to stay at home as you age, even when you factor in paying for any supports you need to stay safe and happy, than it will to move (no one likes that!) into a situation that doesn’t give you joy.

So, if you’ve decided to stay at home as you age, and you want it to be easy and safe, here is a step by step guide for putting the supports you need in place. Whether you need housecleaning, home care assistance, or small project contractors or handymen, the process is the same.

1. Research the going rates for the services you want to hire. In Kamloops right now, home repairs and maintenance cost $50 – $100 per hour or more; personal care, such as bathing and personal care assistance, costs $25 - $50 per hour; housecleaning costs $30$45 per hour per person, and yard maintenance costs $35 - $65 per hour.

2. Meet with the service providers you want to do business with, and make sure they understand the “scope of work”

‘Tis the season to be organized As many of you may have seen the Everything Organized “Home for the Holidays” residence this year, I thought I would go into more depth on the dreaded subject of how to store Christmas items.

When we look at storage, one of life’s hardest things to store are Christmas items. For some people, opening that box of decorations looks like a rats’ nest of lights, bows and garland.

Many will unravel one string of lights and end up in an hour long

untangling session.

So this year, perhaps open that box a few days early and keep in mind, less is more. Going through everything gives us an opportunity to see what we like and why. Let’s face it, our tastes change, our square footage changes and things break down.

But, don’t just toss the stuff you no longer use: give it to charity. Just because you no longer use something doesn’t mean it doesn’t have life in someone else’s home.

Now, let’s fast forward to when the holidays are over. It’s time to pack it all back up, and it’s the perfect time to do it

right. Instead of packing everything into as few boxes as possible let’s have a box for each set of items with ample room so nothing gets crushed.

Start with those long strings of Christmas lights. There are items you can buy that will reel up the lights or get a piece of cardboard and cut a slit in one end to anchor the start of a line and proceed to wrap the set around the cardboard till you reach the end where you cut another notch and anchor the other end. As you pile your lights in your storage container you may want to layer newspaper or tissue to

protect your lights during storage. Do garland the same way and the garland can act as a nice cushion between fragile layers of lights.

There are many storage containers you can buy to hold ornaments but normally the best container is the box they came in as they are formed to protect these fragile items. The most important thing to remember is pack these in a separate box as the original boxes and ornaments themselves are very fragile so can’t take much weight placed on top of them.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a term first coined by psychiatrist Dr. Norman Rosenthal after he moved from sunny Johannesburg to New York City and sank into

He went on to discover that latitude affects your attitude as the incidence of SAD increases the farther people live away from the equator and also that three to four times more women than men suffer from SAD. Symptoms associated with this disorder are lack of energy, low concentration, sleep problems, anxiety, panic attacks, carb cravings, overeating, and lowered immune function.

SAD is treated conventionally with a light box, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and antidepressant medication.

His father, Mike, and mother, Mia, do everything they can to help Finn, who is physically altered forever.

Parents and son struggle with dismay, guilt, and anger. Simultaneously the family confronts financial ruin: Mike’s business

partner is embezzling huge sums from Mike’s business.

Tensions ratchet up: Finn loves a girl whose boyfriend is a nasty piece of work, Mia considers a fling, Mike begins to spend his evenings playing baseball in a “perverted field of dreams” with a “gangsta wannabe” kid, and the sexual assault of a girl whom they all care about shakes the comfortable neighbourhood.

It is achingly poignant that Mia, Michael, and Finn do love each other. At

one point, Michael takes Finn shopping. “Beneath the (cubicle) door, a pair of well-worn flip-flops and beside them, his son’s size eleven and a half feet.

Impossible. Yesterday, the day he was born, they couldn’t have been more than two inches long.”

All parents will recognize such moments, the miracle of children maturing at blinding speed. Later on Mia is at a shopping mart when she runs into the doctor who worked with Finn. “Trauma to a child can be hard on a marriage,” he says. Swirling by them in the store are lots of children, the distracted parents manoeuvering loaded carts.

“She wants to reach out and seize their arms as they pass, tell them to pay

attention, to be diligent, to never stop talking to their sons, to teach their girls to roar. No quitting, she wants to tell them. No quitting on the kids.” Good advice for the holiday season in particular.

It is an understatement to say that We All Love the Beautiful Girls is powerful.

Both breath-taking in its recognition of beauty and love, and “stabbed in the heart” shocking in descriptions of human imperfections, the story of Finn and his family is a masterpiece. Highly recommended reading for adults.

It’s truly awe inspiring to behold the majestic peaks of Machu Picchu.

Upon my first wondrous steps, I felt that I must have climbed a magical beanstalk to arrive at this astonishing Andean Shangri-La. It’s a dizzying, misty, dreamlike world. We’ve all seen a gazillion photos of this place, but none hold a candle to the real-time vision. It’s clear why it was voted one of the new seven wonders of the world.

Getting there is half the journey. First is the arrival at Cusco airport, which is difficult for many due to the extreme altitude, a discomfort eased by a welcome cup of coca leaf tea — giddyup! It’s wise to spend a relaxing day exploring this lofty city with its awesome markets and Spanish colonial architecture. Allow yourself to physically adapt before traveling onward through the Sacred Urubamba River Valley to the Incan citadel. The scenic, sky-lighted train ride to the enchanting village of Machu Picchu is spectacular.

If this UNESCO heritage destination is on your bucket list, don’t hesitate.

The Pre-Columbian ruins sit at 2,430 meters above sea level and the rugged, terraced terrain is tremendously challenging. Older folks will struggle not just with the hiking, but also with altitude sickness. All hotels keep oxygen tanks on hand.

Built around 1450, this intriguing complex, cleverly built of mortarfree, dry-stone walls, was abandoned a century later during the Spanish Conquest. Although American explorer Hiram Bingham may claim bragging rights for ‘discovering’ Machu Picchu in 1911, it was a long-running ‘best kept secret’ amongst local indigenous farmers, who surely saved this treasured archaeological site from colonial plunder and destruction.

Trekking through the semi-restored ruins of the 200 various buildings with their curious astronomical alignments and taking in the stunning panoramic views is a surreal experience. Its three primary structures are the Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun, and the Room of the Three Windows. It so happened the day I ascended Machu Picchu was May 21st, 2011 — the day U.S. Christian radio host Harold Camping and his followers prophesied that the end of times ‘Rapture’ would occur. Really, as a non-believer, it was a winwin for me. Being so close to the heavens, it would surely be a piece of cake for any would-be Gods to beam me up. Or, if as another soulless heathen seeking world peace I was deemed unworthy and left in solitude in this glorious place, well, I was totally cool with that too!

The whole experience was made more magical by the natural beauty of the lush tropical forest with comical llamas and adorable chinchillas adorning the vivid green hills. It’s important to respect the environmental tourist regulations while touring the ancient city, as it’s on the list of top 100 endangered sites.

I would also recommend a visit to the botanical gardens and museum. It’s an easy 25 minute walk along a jungle trail from the village. There, you’ll delight in the diverse flora, including 400 varieties of orchids and gain further insight into the fascinating history of the indigenous people and their guidance in Bingham’s archaeological dig.

For those of hearty stock, it’s a rite of passage to rise in darkness and hike to the viewpoint to experience the iconic sunrise over Wayna Picchu. My journey to this heavenly Incan sanctuary was rapturous indeed.

Plan your hot water tank replacement

Nothing lasts forever.

You can wait for some things to wear out, fail or otherwise stop working before you replace them.

An example of this would be a light bulb; there aren’t too many reasons to change a light bulb that is still working. On the other hand, some things are better replaced before they fail.

Your hot water tank is a good example of

something in your home that you should replace before it fails. It is merely inconvenient if your hot water tank loses its ability to heat water, but it can be a disaster if the tank starts to leak.

Unfortunately, the most common failure mode for hot water tanks is to leak, and often the first indication of a problem is a wet basement floor.

Although there are some electric hot water tanks with plastic tanks, most residential hot water tanks are glasslined steel cylinders with a heating system.

The glass is there to protect the steel from the corrosive effects of the water in the tank.

Unfortunately the tank is subject to stresses from water pressure and expansion caused by heating, and these stresses will eventually cause cracks in the glass lining. Once the protection has been breached, the tank can corrode and will eventually leak.

The life expectancy of a hot water tank is usually given as 8 to 12 years from the date of installation, but 10 years is generally considered to be a good time to be planning a replacement.

One of the hottest trends you’ll find for bathroom design is wood inspired tile. This type of tile mimics the appearance of real wood by using grain and small knots printed on the tile, or by using the texture created by wood features when pressed against concrete. Either option looks great and creates a warmer atmosphere than one may expect with tile.

While hardwood does look beautiful

in the home and can be installed almost anywhere, it is not the best match for your bathroom because of fluctuating moisture levels. As a general rule of thumb, wood and water do not mix. This makes tile a much more suitable option due to its ability to perform in areas that do see a lot of moisture. With the proper installation one can have a tile flow seamlessly from the bathroom door into a walk-in shower if so desired. Additionally, installing a heat mat underneath your tile

floor will keep your feet warm and happy in the colder months and your family and friends blue with envy after their holiday visit.

A great design tip is to pair the wood inspired tile with an off-colour grout, such as grey. This will really help your new bathroom tile get that “wow” factor and adds a modern flair to the wood look.

If you are inspired by the wood look but looking for an even more cost conscious route, a great option is vinyl plank. Vinyl plank comes in a variety of

wood styles, colours, and performs well in areas that see moisture.

Another benefit is the savings on your labour costs for the vinyl plank install.

TVO gets into the Christmas Spirit Thompson Valley Orchestra launches its 21st season with Prelude to Christmas, led by new Guest Conductor, Don Bennett. Celebration of the Christmas season in classic yuletide style Submitted by Magnus Ballé, President, KBO The Kamloops Brandenburg Orchestra presents “Baroque Christmas,” a spectacular concert celebrating the Christmas season with harmonious music by master composers Corelli, J.S. Bach, Handel, Torelli, Tartini and Resphighi.

Two of the works, “Christmas Concertos” by concerto “grosso” (or group) influential composers Corelli and Torelli, were written specifically for the Yuletide season. Brandenburg Concertmaster and Kamloops violinist Rhiannon Nachbaur believes audience members will find the programme refreshing.

“Between all tv and radio ads and non-stop music in the stores, we are inundated with overplayed pop carols,” Nachbaur said.

“I am thoroughly enjoying playing beautiful music that was composed with the pure Christmas feeling in mind, and

free from the commercial hype and distractions.”

“Baroque music is restorative, for both the player and the listener. This time of year we all feel rushed and overwhelmed, but this concert will help us to reflect on the joys of the season.”

This enjoyment clearly shows in the performance the group is presenting.

The concert showcases local talent from musicians from our community as well as solo performances by area musicians Lucas Olsen and Lindsey Christian-Hack on violin for Bach’s famous “Double” Violin Concerto.

Rob Hogeveen is featured on piccolo trumpet in the Tartini Trumpet Concerto and Gail Mulner is the organ soloist in the Handel Organ Concerto.

As a special visual treat, this is Brandenburg’s yearly “costumed” performance.

Audience members will delight in the lavish and elaborate Baroque era garb, from buckled shoes to white powdered wigs and all the fancy layered trimmings in between.

“It’s quite the spectacle when the Brandenburg Orchestra is

all gussied up in our fineries,” laughed Nachbaur, who encourages audience members to take photos of and with the musicians during the intermission in the ornate surroundings of the cathedral.

Christmas with the KSO Homewell The Kamloops Symphony invites you to join them at their annual celebration of the festive season, Christmas with the KSO. There are two performances of this classic holiday concert; Saturday, December 16 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, December 17 at 2 p.m., in the Sagebrush Theatre.

Joining the KSO on stage is Guest Artist Anne-Marie MacIntosh, soprano.

Known for her effervescent coloratura and dramatic vivacity, MacIntosh is an exciting new face in Canada’s opera scene. Originally from Langley, B.C., she has performed numerous roles across Canada as well as overseas in the Czech Republic, Italy, and China over the past several years.

Christmas with the KSO also features the KSO Chorus, who will perform the perennial favourite Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah, as well as many other festive holiday classics.

Leading the orchestra and chorus is Guest Conductor, Scott Seaton. Praised as a conductor with finesse, clarity,

and precision, Seaton has conducted orchestras spanning North America, South America, and Europe. He is entering his third season as Music Director of the North State Symphony, and was recently named Principal Conductor of the Veridian Symphony Orchestra and the Bel Canto Singers.

Christmas with the KSO will include a feast of festive music that is fun for the whole family. Highlights include Tchaikovsky’s March from the Nutcracker, music from A Charlie Brown Christmas, and an audience sing along.

You can also get a behind the scenes look at the orchestra preparing for the concert with this season’s first BDO Open Dress rehearsal, Saturday, December 16 at 1 p.m. in the Sagebrush Theatre.

Winter nights hold a certain magic on the ski hills. Drawn to the beauty of mountainous terrain, a carload of kids headed up to Todd Mountain in Kamloops, B.C. for night skiing on New Year’s Eve 1984. Reaching the lodge we strapped on our boards, a term used by us old-timers, and marveled at the Christmas lights.

From the chairlift, the slopes appeared majestic, and coming off the lift we skied into another world on that magnificent night.

We skied between the expanses of hoar-frost-covered trees, crystal ice and snow statues which formed during snowstorms over the evergreens, and breath-taking surreal moonscapes. If our winter wonderland were captured by an artist’s brush, the paintings would be prize-winners in local galleries.

And, whether any of us were artists or not, our minds turned to renderings of other-world planets with white galaxies casting their peculiar glow over our ski runs.

Hours on the slopes flew by while hot cocoa, wine and cheese, sugar cookies, cakes and more wafted from the buffet in the rustic lodge. Fireworks broke the silence between the hills and meadows.

Their psychedelic patterns dripped from the night sky over the peaks and fizzled out over the twists of trails.

It got noisy in the lodge. Strains from throaty choristers singing, accompanied by guitarists, floated in the rafters and open beams of the log building. In the end, sung in front of the fireplace, “Auld

Lang Zyne” roused our spirits as we celebrated the arrival of 1985.

An aura of beauty and joy spilled out onto the snow through picture windows. Dots of red, green and amber light-reflections created a magical scene.

When the exhausted gang crawled into the car to sleep on the way back down the mountain, there were no city lights in sight— only a pair of headlights shone, from a distance, in the rear view mirror. A patch of glare ice caught our wheels. The driver corrected easily enough to pull out of the skid, but our car went directly into another black-ice abyss and slid completely out of control to the other side of the road. There was no shoulder. A cliff loomed in the shadows as our headlights brought the mounds of snow, left by a snow plow, to rise ominously before our eyes. A twist and a turn, a whip and a jolt, threw all of us back in our seats. We were heading straight for the bank and feared the worst. Would we go over the cliff? Instinctively and frantically, the driver jumped up and down on the brake, and the belly of the car hung up on the snow drift. The dangerous angle made the car tip and teeter freakishly.

Those of us on the driver’s side could actually see down over the cliff. None of us dared shuffle. If so, the car would surely careen over the edge to the crevasse below. “Don’t try to get out, you guys! We all have to slide carefully over to the passenger side,” the driver urged. Squeezing close to

the doors, we were then instructed to slowly open them. Working hard against gravity, finally the cold night air rushed in. The car shifted a few inches. It felt like an airplane hitting an air pocket. We made it out and held our breaths while our beloved driver crawled out to safety. The heat of adrenalin swept over us as, simultaneously, we fell to the ground fatigued by fear and relieved of danger. When we got up, we were extraordinarily excited and romped energetically down the bank through the pristine snow to play while we waited for help.

Out of nowhere, lights drifted over us through the dark. It was the bus load of skiers which had been a distance behind us. The bus took the curve and skidded on the same patch of ice our car had skidded on. Its lights beamed high and low as it carved its way across the ice-covered road. It swerved and a creepy cascade of shadows floated over the darkness.

Someone yelled that we needed to get out of the way. We crawled and struggled through the deep soft snow to flee from the ‘fall line’.

The bus skidded and slammed into the back side of our car lifting it from the edge of the precipice where it creaked and swayed.

The quirky little Subaru’s nose tilted and tipped to a disturbing angle, and from our vantage point of safety on the sidelines, we witnessed the awesome but ugly sight as it plunged over the bank— and at the same instant—brought the bus to a halt! Like a movie

The Singletree Story by Trudy Frisk Christmas is a nostalgic time. Now, as the lights glow, we remember old friends separated by time and distance. This is the story of how two young cowboys from the Gang Ranch, having lost touch with each other for years, were re-united by a singletree.

(Editor’s note: A singletree is a wooden or metal bar used to balance the pull of a draught horse when pulling a vehicle.)

That singletree hangs from the ceiling in the log home of Joan and Enda Green in McLure, B.C. It’s graying now and the wood, oak or possibly maple, shows cracks. It’s obviously traveled many miles.

But, it’s simple and strong; the wood bar and metal fittings are clean and tough as if they could go to work tomorrow. The horses that pulled it are gone now, as are the cowboys who drove them. It’s full of stories— one of them the tale of two close friends who never forgot each other.

The singletree has belonged to Endy Green, antiquarian and story-teller, for almost sixty years.

In 1950, Endy and Joan had a coffee shop at Glen Lake, near Victoria, on Vancouver Island. Bob Whitty, owner of Whitty’s Lagoon, was a regular customer.

Over time Bob told the Greens about his past.

He’d worked on the Gang Ranch, “boy and man,” for many years and had a friend of the same age who worked there with him all that time. One day his friend heard that he’d received a small legacy

back East so he traveled across Canada to claim it. Meanwhile, a company on the Island bought a stage-coach from the Gang Ranch. Bob Whitty was delegated to deliver the coach and horses. He took them over the old Cariboo Road, through the Fraser Canyon and on, by ferry, to their destination. The new company was so impressed that they asked him to stay on and operate the coach, which he did, driving it from Victoria to Sooke for many years.

Bob said how often he thought of his young friend from the ranch and missed him because they’d been closer than brothers. But, he had no idea how to locate him way off in Eastern Canada.

Eventually horses gave way to motors and the Sooke Stage was a van, not a stage-coach. When Bob retired he took the single-trees off the stage-coach because they were his property.

In 1959, the Greens moved from the Island to the B.C. Interior. Before they left, Bob Whitty came in carrying a singletree and said to Endy, “I know you love this. I have a pair of them. I’ll share this one with you. I know it’ll have a good home.”

The Greens went looking for property outside Kamloops. A real estate agent told them that an old chap had a small ranch and riding stable where he raised horses for sale, up at Knutsford. After they’d looked it over, the owner, “a rangy old fellow,” asked them in for coffee. Over coffee they got talking.

He hadn’t always lived at Knutsford, said the rancher. As a young man he’d worked for a big ranch, the Gang Ranch. He told the same story Bob Whitty told, but in reverse. He’d gone East to claim his inheritance, but he just couldn’t live there. When he got back to the Gang Ranch, his friend Bob was gone. All he knew was that Bob was somewhere on Vancouver Island, which was a long way off, for a young fellow, even one with an inheritance. “I guess he’s dead now,” he said sadly.

“No, he’s not dead.” Endy assured him. “I can give you his address.”

“If that’s supposed to be a joke, young fellow…” began the rancher.

“No, it’s not a joke. He’s a good friend of mine and he’s spent all these years hoping to hear from you!”

After hearing that, the rancher could barely wait to push Endy and the real estate agent out of the house so he could write to his old friend.

To Endy all antiques have stories. “They’re steeped in history,” he says. “They have warmth and character.”

Just like the pioneers who used them long ago.

On November 11, 2017, we had the amazing opportunity once again to partner with the Royal Canadian Legion and serve hotdogs and hot chocolate to the youth attending the Remembrance Day Parade and Service. It was great to witness some 275 youths all together at one time with the best manners/ behaviour.. It was a true joy to have them in our midst. A huge thank you to all our volunteers who helped make this day such a success.

Christmas is now just around the corner and our centre is gearing up for the many Christmas parties being held at our facility. We hope our volunteers are getting lots of rest as the calendar looks busy.

Please note that the North Shore Community Centre will be closed Monday, December 25 Christmas Day and Tuesday, December 26 Boxing Day. We will also be closed on New Year’s Day. We look back at 2017 with a sense of overwhelming “Wow!” There have been staff changes, large building maintenance projects, new signage and many classes that have added more days to their repertoire. This month I would like to talk to you about Associated Country Women (ACWW). We had our ACWW Rural Women’s Tea at the Heffley Creek Hall in October. This was our 4th Annual ACWW Tea and we thank the Heffley Creek Community Association for allowing us to have the Rural Tea there.

ACWW connects and supports more than 9 million women around the world.

Through cooperation and understanding we empower women to exercise more power and change to their own lives for the better.

ACWW connects rural and non-rural women and their communities worldwide through a network of member societies and individual members. This is accomplished through advocacy, partnership, sharing knowledge and local activities.

This includes UN representation, access to better information resources, funding community development projects and training programs.

ACWW is committed to raising the health and standard of living of rural women and their families. ACWW is nonsectarian, non-political and forward looking.

Previous projects include: In India, ACWW helped train women in different skills such as making candles, pickles and poppadum and teaching them the intricacies of starting a

business and paying back loans. Also in India, a fish processing project which helped train 60 women in fish processing (drying and packaging).

In South Africa, we helped women acquire and install a solar pump to help obtain clean water.

This year we are helping women in Guatemala. The beneficiaries are women aged 15 – 25 years living around the municipal garbage dump of Guatemala City. These women have not been able to complete their education and lack a sustainable livelihood or income with which to support their families.

The training will include workshops on the subject of “Values and Virtues” and “Discover your Strengths and Vocations,” so that the beneficiaries can discover their own value and abilities and build up their self-esteem. Personal interviews will be held with each beneficiary to help them find out what income earning activities interest them and they will register with suitable vocational training schemes i.e.: hairdressing, catering, pastry-making or IT. The second project this year is to help women in Romania with Art Therapy. The aim of this project is to help victims of domestic violence to regain confidence and self esteem and look forward to an independent life. The association in Romania opened its

shelter for women and children suffering from domestic violence in 2007. Members have been working hard ever since to provide a safe, welcoming environment for users of the shelter and to equip them with skill and means to move forward with their lives. Materials will be purchased and trainers appointed so that the beneficiaries can be taught quilling, an art form involving the use of strips of paper which are rolled, shaped and glued in order to make decorative objects such as picturesque photo frames, greeting cards, coasters and candlesticks.

The training and the activity will be carried out for 12 months, but after two months the beneficiaries will be involved in advertising and selling the objects they have created. It is expected that the children will participate as well, according to their ages and abilities.

We want to raise awareness for these two important projects of Guatemala and Romania and help women less fortunate than ourselves.

We had 19 women attend our tea and we thank them for their generous contributions towards our projects.

Overlander WI would like to invite other women to join us and be aware of our community around us.

A little touch of Hawaii as the cold sets in

Spareribs Aloha 3 lbs. spareribs 1 medium onion chopped 1 green pepper chopped 1 can undiluted tomato soup 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 can pineapple tidbits juice and all 1/3 c vinegar 1/4 c brown sugar 1/2 tsp dry mustard Salt & pepper Cut ribs into serving-sized pieces and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Place in shallow pan, bake at 450°F for 1/2 hour. Pour off excess fat. Reduce heat to 350°F. Mix remaining ingredients and pour over ribs. Bake 1-1/2 hours. Baste frequently.

Note: Instead of spareribs pork chops may be used.

Two of my daughter-in-law Barb’s favourite recipes

Hawaiian Beef 1 egg 1 lb hamburger 1 chopped onion 1 tsp salt Dash pepper 1 c ketchup 1/4 c brown sugar 2 tsp dry mustard 2 tbsp vinegar

Pineapple Banana Loaf

3 c flour 2 c granulated sugar 1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp salt 1 c undrained crushed pineapple 3 eggs 1 1/2 c canola oil 2 c mashed ripe bananas (about 5 bananas) 2 tsp vanilla 1 c chopped nuts (optional) Combine first 5 dry Ingredients. Beat remaining ingredients together in large bowl until blended. Add dry ingredients stirring thoroughly until combined.

Spread in two greased 8 1/2” x 4 1/2” loaf pans, dividing evenly. Bake at 350°F for 60 – 70 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

1 can kidney beans 1 can pork and beans 1 can pineapple chunks drained Combine hamburger with onion, egg, salt and pepper. Form into balls. Brown on all sides in hot skillet. Remove from skillet. Add ketchup, brown sugar, vinegar, and mustard. Bring to a boil.

Combine beans, and pineapple into a 2 quart casserole. Top with meatballs.

Pour sauce over all. Bake in a moderate oven 350°F for 45 – 60 minutes.

I’ll have a Blue Christmas

No matter what the circumstances, these familiar words have new significance when it is your first holiday season without a loved one.

Suddenly that hole he or she left seems even bigger and your sadness and grief is magnified “I’ll have a blue by the lights and bells Christmas without you.”

bright, a Blue Christmas service, sometimes called a Longest Night service, offers a space of quiet and reflection, an opportunity to pause, reflect on our losses, and honour the loved ones who will not sit around the table with us this year. This service acknowledges that in the midst of a world covered in twinkling lights, sparkly decorations and gaiety, for many of us there is a deep darkness that needs a word of hope.

When a new year looms, my thoughts turn to what my calling might be for the remainder of my life. “Callings” I’ve learned are not fixed forever. But wait, maybe they are. Maybe we spend our lives figuring out who we really are if we’re not being what other people want us to be. Maybe our calling is to be that person every day and “do” what arises.

At St. Peter’s Abbey in Muenster, Saskatchewan soon after my marriage ended, nothing seemed true. At a writing retreat, it was past dawn; the robins had quit heralding the sunrise with their staccato chirps. The prairie marsh was blanketed with a mist of mosquitoes. I came to acres of gardens, the work of the Benedictine monks who cooked and served its produce on site.

I’d have thought they weren’t ripe. I’m Wendy.”

“Brother Pius,” he replied.

“You look like Father Dimetrius,” I said recalling another monk at the Abbey.

“I do have a twin,” he laughed.

“I’ve noticed if you meet one monk, you’ve met them all” and we laughed. “How did you get to be a monk?”

“I got called,” he said, “from up above and from my heart. I had no choice.

Who’d do this otherwise?”

He laughed again.

“I think I’d have said ‘yes” if I’d been called.

What are three important Christmas gifts for Murray this year?

It’s not exactly ‘gold, frankincense and myrrh,’ but the following gifts are very important nonetheless.

It’s ironic because although we don’t think of our own demise when contemplating Christmas gifts, we should. That’s because, when that inevitable time arrives, your family will thank you for your thoughtfulness -- long after they have completely forgotten that tacky tie, the warm woolly socks, or the other gifts you gave them at Christmas.

What’s first on the undertaker’s stocking stuffer list? First, Murray should have a Will naming an Executor, and everyone in the family should know who that

Executor is especially the Executor! Why is the Will important to the undertaker? Contrary to popular belief, it’s not so the undertaker knows who to approach for payment. It’s because, when Murray dies, the Executor is the person who will have final say over his burial or cremation arrangements.

Why is that important?

Because there’s a very good chance the kids in Murray and Alice’s blended family will find something to fight over.

One will want Murray’s ashes scattered in the South Thompson River, the other one will swear that Murray told her to bury Murray’s body in Hillside Cemetery. With a Will, the Executor can hopefully prevent the discord.

It’s only one page long, and will take Murray five minutes to fill out.

There are about 20 questions that Murray should be able to answer

before his coffee gets cold (e.g. Murray’s mother’s maiden name and birth place). It also asks Murray questions like “Do you want your ashes scattered, buried, returned to family.”

Finally, it advises Murray to have four important documents handy for his Executor/ Next of Kin. The 1-2-3 Planning Sheet will save Murray’s family a lot of stress after he’s gone.

Lit up by the bus’s bright headlights, blues, reds and yellows -- stripes and myriad patterns of skis, poles, boots and gear, glistened like a yard sale of Christmas gifts scattered over the snow. The doomed little Subaru, painted in the colours of an Olympic ski team, pounded into a tree trunk, crumpled and came to a stop twenty-metres down. We stood in amazement that the horrific events did not take any lives.

The bus driver hastily opened both doors, and exiting onto a mound of snow, the panicked kids shrieked in relief. Scrambling to huddle together, shivering and shaking in the cold, we all made plans on how to get home.

Our gang crowded into the tow truck, and the kids on the bus were loaded into another bus. The New Year had been christened, like a new year’s baby, with blessings beyond belief. Each New Year since 1985 brings memories of course, but mostly gratitude and hope in view of life’s crises, celebrations and resolutions.

I must admit, I got a little nostalgic this year,

when I realized that this is the 12th year that I have written a Christmas letter to you – my clients, my friends.

Although Kamloops Hearing Aid Centre has been in business for almost 18 years, we didn’t think to send out a Christmas letter until a few years after we opened. I was doing up my Christmas cards and started thinking about all of my clients and their wonderfully interesting lives. I enjoy your stories so very much, I thought that you might want to see what we’ve been up to all year as well. This is my way of visiting with you, even when we’re not able to see each other in person.

I’ve kept all my old letters and reread them once in a while. It’s interesting that as much as things change they also stay the same. I love the fact that we have stayed true to our values and still believe that old-fashioned service, respect, quality and a little laughter is the only way to run a business. These are the values that our founding owner Al Hodgson instilled in us 18 years ago and we couldn’t imagine serving you any other way.

I’m nostalgic about our staff, too. Joanne’s been here for 16 years and Lynda for 14. (That’s longer than my first marriage!) We’re also happy to welcome Dillan to our team this year. He’s from Revelstoke and is training as a hearing instrument practitioner, hoping to find employment in the Okanagan when he is licensed.

As you probably remember, Joanne and I have spent at least one week every year creating pottery at her cabin on Griffin Lake. This summer was no different except for the fact that while we were potting, we were also watching the helicopters dip their buckets into the lake. That was interesting the first time, until we realized that it was only three minutes between runs. That meant a forest fire was pretty close and we started planning our evacuation route. Luckily it was under control quite quickly and we continued our “Mimosas and Mud” weekend.

Joanne inspires me with her artistic capabilities and her love for the environment. (When she catches me putting recyclables in the wrong bucket she corrects it with a raised eyebrow.) She’s so green that she has even transformed her front yard into a vegetable garden. Did you

know that eggplants absolutely love living in our downtown core? Her front yard tomatoes and cucumbers did quite well too! You know we really are never too old to to try something new, are we?

Speaking of learning something new, I find it simply remarkable how many of our clients have embraced technology. Hearing aids are better now than they have ever been. I don’t say this lightly, but with the accessories that are available now for new hearing devices I can guarantee that hearing in difficult situations, such as restaurants, parties or family gatherings, is significantly improved.

You may remember that Lynda has hearing loss; she’s been using the remote microphone accessory for over a year now. I have to admire her dedication to physical fitness - several times a week her and her hubby go to the rock climbing gym. When you are climbing, one person is on the wall and one person is holding the ropes and standing on the ground. It’s really difficult to hear when you are 20 feet up a wall, facing away from your partner but this is where the microphone shines.

Her husband clips the microphone on to his shirt and Lynda can hear his directions clear as a bell! Lynda did a lot of climbing and hiking this summer, she spent eight days of her vacation days hiking the last section (70 miles) of the Pacific Crest Trail!

Many of the hearing aids that we supply come from Starkey Canada. You may recognize this brand name because of all the work we’ve done with the Starkey Hearing Foundation. This Foundation conducts hearing missions around the globe to bring the gift of hearing to those who would otherwise live in the isolation of a silent world. They take the working, or non-working, hearing aids that you donate and salvage them for usable parts. Hearing aid practitioners and audiologists join the Foundation and volunteer their time to fit the hearing aids to help give the gift of hearing. We are so proud to be a part of this Foundation. The donation box is in our waiting room and if you have an old pair of hearing aids in your drawer please consider giving to this very worthy cause.

Truth be told, I’m also nostalgic about my partner Blaine. We’ve now been together for 18 years.

Sometimes it seems like the time has just flown by.

We’ve watched our children and our staff’s children grow into amazing people. We’ve celebrated, we’ve mourned and we’ve laughed. The days have grown into years and the years into decades. I can’t tell you how much it means to us to have created such a strong history in Kamloops. Kamloops Hearing Aid Centre started out as a family run business in downtown Kamloops and continues to this day as a family owned and operated business in Sahali. Although it still seems new to us, we’ve been located on Arrowstone Drive in Sahali for over seven years now. I’m sure when we first moved in that our neighbours must have raised an eyebrow or two when we paved paradise and put in a six-car parking lot in the front yard! We knew that our customers would love the new level entry, fully wheelchair accessible office. And we loved the fact that a simple change like this could make it so much easier for all of you.

As I sit here reminiscing, it doesn’t seem that it was all that many years ago that I told you about my 40th birthday. I can’t believe that I’m now writing about my 50th. I have to say that it’s funny how times change.

When I turned 40 it was pizza and beer, but at 50 Blaine went all out. He arranged for an over-the-top cocktail party at our home and didn’t miss a thing! Glamorous decorations, amazing catering by Terra Restaurant and a house full of friends, family and very talented musicians.

The times may change, but I have to say I’m pretty lucky as most of my friends attended both.

Speaking of parties, this will be the 16th Annual Christmas Tea and Sing Along at our office. It’s good old-fashioned fun with eggnog and fresh baked treats. Please consider stopping in for a quick hello, some coffee, tea, eggnog or a tasty treat. It’s a great opportunity to pick up batteries and make sure your hearing aids are in top condition for the social moments this holiday season. This year it’s being held on Friday, December 15th from 1pm to 4pm. Blaine and his faithful sidekick Marty will be crooning a Christmas tune or two… or twelve!
