A wartime lifeline of pen, paper and postage stamps Letters, photos & sketches submitted by Erin Johnson, great-granddaughter of WWI veteran Hugh McLachlan

Hugh McLachlan of Fernie, B.C., left, began a long-term correspondence with Gladys Cale of Vancouver while he was serving in WWI. His letters survived and offer a glimpse into his wartime experiences.

The late Hugh McLachlan of Fernie, B.C. was a young Canadian headed to war in 1916 when he met a young woman at English Bay. They struck up a friendship and promised to write one another. What followed was a lifelong correspondence between McLachlan and Gladys Cale; most notably an exchange of letters that spanned McLachlan’s time overseas while serving in the first World War. Ms. Cale saved the letters from McLachlan and they eventually made their way to McLachlan’s remaining relatives via the Fernie Museum and Archives.

Erin Johnson, graphic designer at The Connector, is Hugh McLachlan’s greatgranddaughter and offered to share these letters with our readers as we look to honour our veterans this November 11 on Remembrance Day. Correspondences such as this were important lifelines for service men and women in decades gone by. McLachlan frequently showed his impatience to Cale wondering when the

next letter was coming, typically apologizing profusely following their eventual arrival. It demonstrated how much the letters meant to him, especially on those darkest days sitting in muddy trenches and wondering if he would survive.

What follows are brief excerpts of some of the letters and sketches McLachlan shared with Cale while overseas: 1st War letter July 20th 1916 Stationed at: Shorncliff, Eng. Dear Friend I guess you thought I had forgotten to write to you. ...We’re only one mile and a half from the English Channel and we can see France plainly and also hear the guns at the front.

We were out at a rifle range close to Dover for two weeks and we were camped right at the edge of the cliffs.

We had no tents so I didn’t have dry clothes on all the time I was there. ...It took us 19 days to get here. We were on the boat 9

days and we had fine weather all the way and I enjoyed myself fine despite poor grub and sleeping quarters away below the water line, so we had to sleep on top of the parade deck when we got into the danger zone. I can’t tell you what boat we came on or how many troops for this letter will be censored.

Well I think we said enough for this time hoping you’ll remember the soldier you met at English Bay and write to me sometimes for I sure look forward to a letter from B.C. Hoping this finds you in good health as it leaves me fine. Give my regards to your brother.

Continued from page 1 the heather country and I enjoyed every hour of it. I spent two days in Glasgow and visited all the important parts and suburbs.

I saw Bothwell Bridge where the battle of Bothwell Bridge was fought. Also some of shipyards. Then I went to Edinburgh and went through the castle etc. I have relations in both places. I’m enclosing you some heather I picked near Bothwell Bridge. If you look up the Scottish history you’ll see accts’ about it.

The Corporal is just calling out the names of all men who are on draft for Sat. I just heard my name called so it means France, on Sat. There’s an enormous amount of Canadians leaving here every week. I don’t know what they do with them all. I would have been over long ago but I missed the last draft on account of being in Quarantine for mumps.

One of the boys in my tent had them but they can’t send me over too soon as anything is bettter than this.

We get up at 5:30 dress, fold our blankets, roll up our tents and out on parade in fifteen minutes. Drill for an hour, get breakfast consisting of porridge, tea, bread and ham.

Wash, shave, polish our equipment and gun and fall in again in 3/4 of an hour, drill till noon, get dinner.

Soup, spuds, tea, bread, and meat, fall in again at one, drill till 4:30 get supper, tea, bread, soup and some kind of dried fruit. We’re free then till 9:30 p.m. ...Well, you’ll have to excuse the pencil and writing as we have no accommodations for writing and have to use the ground for a table.

I made a first class marksman in my musketry course and I expect to be made a sniper in France. It has been my aim ever since joining, I generally always get what I try for if I put all my heart into it.

Well I’ll have to close, hoping you’ll answer soon, as I’ll be looking forward to hearing from you. Give my regards to Gordon and I think my next letter will be from France.

Nostalgic for snail mail This month’s cover story featuring exerpts from a wartime correspondence has me nostalgic for snail mail.

I was once a prolific letter writer. I wouldn’t just dash off short notes. I would write 10 page sagas to mostly friends. One treasured exchange was with my paternal step-grandmother, GG. As we always lived in different cities, we managed to nurture our relationship via Canada Post sprinkled with occasional visits.

With the advent of the internet, email, cell phones and social media, I no longer write handwritten letters. I seem to have given up the habit a couple of decades ago. While the internet supposedly makes it easier to communicate, I genuinely feel that it is qualitatively inferior in many ways. Emails and direct messages do not excite me anywhere near the same way as a thick handwritten letter received in the mail. Even postcards are more fun.

Interestingly, there are sites online that organize postcard/penpal exchanges. Ever wanted a postcard from Timbuktu? Just go to postcardsfromtimbuktu.com and order one.

Otherwise there are free sites that match people up with other likeminded souls and with some luck your mailbox will begin filling up with postcards from all over the world.

I actually used to save all my letters. I lugged multiple boxes around the country for a number of years before purging them all a few years ago. If anyone I received letters from becomes famous, I may rue the day I chucked them out, but something tells me I’m safe. I may have packaged some of them up and sent them along to the people who wrote them.

Indeed, I realize that average people’s stories eventually have historical value, I simply wasn’t prepared to keep hauling these boxes of letters and journals around. How fortunate that Gladys didn’t think like me and hung onto the letters she received from Hugh while he was overseas.

One of my favourite sets of books was Griffin & Sabine: An Extraordinary Correspondence

by Nick Bantock. It chronicles a fictional correspondence and mysterious long-distance romance between two artists. The books are beautifully illustrated with postcards and actual envelopes with “letters” within. Ironically these books were published right around the time I had stopped actually writing letters.

My sister is a talented calligrapher and I would always look forward to receiving embellished envelopes and parcels from her but this small pleasure, too, has been spoiled and circumvented by the internet and we rarely exchange parcels anymore.

I am no Luddite. I don’t believe the internet is the root of all evil. It is a tool and like any tool it has definitely brought some good things into our lives. It is also a genie that could never be put back. I do, however, lament some of the things technology has changed along the way.

This is not to say I cannot resume putting pen to paper. Perhaps I will—someday. After all there are folks who still listen to vinyl records and others that use old fashioned typewriters.

I don’t imagine there are too many people still using 8-track cassettes or VHS tapes however.

Quite a few things have gone the way of good ole Kodachrome and there’s little we can do about it. Fortunately, handwritten letters are still a possibility. It just takes a little bit of effort.

Questions to ask your financial advisor

You should always be able to ask as many questions as you’d like when working with your financial advisor. So, before you have your annual review, think carefully about what you’d like to ask. Here are a few suggestions: Are my goals still realistic? When you first began working with your financial advisor, you may well have articulated a number of financial

goals. For example, you might have said that you wanted to pay for your children’s education, or that you wanted to retire at a certain age, or that you wanted to travel for two months each year during your retirement.

In fact, you could have many different goals for which you’re saving and investing. When you meet with your financial advisor, you’ll certainly want to ask if you’re still on track toward meeting these goals. If you are, you can continue with the financial strategies you’ve been following; but if you aren’t, you may need to adjust them.

Am I taking on too much – or too little – risk? The financial markets always fluctuate, and these movements will affect the value of your investment portfolio. If you watch the markets

closely every day and track their impact on your investments, you may find yourself fretting considerably over your investments’ value and wondering if you are taking on too much investment risk for your comfort level. Conversely, if you think that during an extended period of market gains your own portfolio appears to be lagging, you might feel that you should be investing more aggressively, which entails greater risk. In any case, it’s important that you know your own risk tolerance and use it as a guideline for making investment choices – so it’s definitely an issue to discuss with your financial advisor.

How will changes in my life affect my investment strategy?

Your life is not static. Over time, you may experience

any number of major events, such as marriage, children, new jobs and so on. When you meet with your financial advisor, you will want to discuss these types of changes, because they can affect your long-term goals and, consequently, your investment decisions.

How are external forces affecting my investment portfolio?

Generally speaking, you will want to create an investment strategy that’s based on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. And, as mentioned above, you may need to adjust your strategy based on changes in your life. But should you also make changes based on outside forces, such as interest rate movements, political events, new legislation or news affecting industries in which

Voters are encouraged to check what they hear on the Elections BC website or at www.prorepfactcheck.ca, a site where academics scrutinize the validity of claims being made by either side.

Fair Vote Kamloops believes that a voting system should function as a mirror, so that the Legislature accurately reflects voter preferences. I want to acknowledge a few great neighbours that helped me get organized this year. This was a very busy year around my home so there was very little time for our own projects. With the early cold weather warning this year it got me organizing the yard with a little more drive then normal.

Having the garden in and the above-ground pool, I got to work right away to prevent any freezing damage. It was a group effort with Richelle handling the garden and myself dealing with winterizing the yard and breaking down the pool.

There was a lot to do but we got it knocked off

rather quickly with threat of Jack Frost nipping at our heals.

After the panic was over that weekend I decided as I was so rushed the first go around I started looking for what could use some extra attention in the yard prior to the snow falling. I instantly see the pile of windows we have gathered in the corner for a someday project that was taking so much room and impossible to make look nice. Richelle has wanted a greenhouse for years and so she has gathered some supplies over the years for this dream project.

It was going to be a big project and I didn’t have nearly enough supplies for the full build but like I say use baby steps to tackle any big task, so I started clearing the area and getting the build area ready so I could at least put things where they

would be going and get that problem area cleared out.

While I was working away, the neighbours on both sides started doing clean up as well as it was a nice weekend and perhaps one of the last ones for this year.

I was talking with one neighbour about my project and he mentioned he was downsizing and he had some windows I could have. As I finished loading windows from the one neighbour the other neighbour came over and asked if I or someone I know could use some lumber that he needed to remove to make room in his garage. Needless to say I accepted the lumber.

I now have a much cleaner yard and a nice new greenhouse for the spring. It was great to see my neighbours kindness helped us all get organized for the winter.

‘Tis the season of prevention against influenza

Once again we are entering flu season.

Influenza, often called the “flu,” is a highly changeable virus hence different flu shots each year.

Complications resulting in bacterial pneumonia or viral pneumonia can be fatal especially among the elderly, very young children and those with weakened immune systems and those with other chronic conditions.

Influenza symptoms are more severe than cold viruses. I usually differentiate flu from cold viruses by checking out to

see if someone has extreme tiredness and muscle pain which is usually present with influenza. Other symptoms of flu include fever, cough, headache, sore throat, and a runny nose. Usually viruses spread when we touch droplets from coughs or sneeze on a person or object and a person touches ones own mouth, nose or eyes before washing their hands. This is why hand washing is one of the most important ways to prevent and stop the spread of flu and cold viruses. Influenza also can spread through breathing, coughing, and sneezing from one person to another person. Once a person is infected with influenza , they can spread the virus one day before to five days after symptoms start.

Children can spread the virus up to 21 days after symptoms start. We can always reduce the risk

Participants will learn about the different types of support available throughout the dementia journey, including an introduction to programs and services offered by the Azheimer Society of B.C. This session is only intended for people experiencing early symptoms of dementia, as well as family members or friends who have recently begun supporting a person with dementia.

Gardengate: Connecting communities through food

By Sandra Frangiadakis, KFPC Food Action Lead When Laura Kalina looked out her office window at the North Shore Health Unit in the late 90s, and saw an expanse of largely unproductive farmland littered with refuse, she thought to herself how awesome it would be to have an educational farm there. Not one to sit by and let things pass, she rallied folks from the City, Interior Health, and THEO BC (now known as Open Door Group) around the idea and they applied for funding from the Ministry of Community Development. Fast forward to 2018, and you’re at the Gardengate Horticulture Training Centre, a 2.8 acre

certified organic farm in Brocklehurst operated by Open Door Group and funded by Interior Health. Gardengate provides rehabilitation, vocational training, and life skills training for persons living with mental health issues, while also providing volunteer opportunities and organic produce for members of the community.

Well known for their spring plant sales, Gardengate sells organic produce on-site during the summer and fall, and hosts a couple of fun community events every year. The Salsa Challenge in August celebrates our abundant

local tomatoes and sees teams from various community organizations compete against each other to create the best salsa from scratch. Just before Halloween, Gardengate pumpkins are given to students to carve into jack-olanterns and then brought back to the farm for the annual Pumpkins of Light event. Hundreds of lit-up pumpkins are lined up along the garden path and the public is invited to walk through the magical display and then enjoy hot chocolate and other refreshments in the greenhouse.

As it says on their website, personal and community wellness go hand in hand, and Gardengate is contributing to both. Program participants come with a diverse set of needs and each individual has their own goals to work on -- from rehabilitation or employment skills, to growing their own food, or even cooking for themselves. This is the recipe that Gardengate makes for Pumpkins of Light, it is a crowd favourite! Any time it is made in a cooking workshop, copies of the recipe are made for people to take home. If you don’t have delicata squash, any squash will do, or use pumpkin! If using pureed squash, just skip the roasting step and add puree to pot when indicated. The recipe is also great without the roasted beet garnish.

Ingredients: •2 large cloves garlic, minced •Pinch of ground nutmeg •2 medium beets, diced into small pieces •1 tsp. ground turmeric •1 can coconut milk – 15oz •1 delicata squash, peeled and diced •1tsp. curry powder •2 tbsp. lime juice •½ tbsp. olive oil •1 tsp. fresh ginger, minced •2 tsp. dried thyme •1 cup dry red lentils •½ tsp. ground cinnamon •1 tbsp. sugar •5 cups vegetable broth •¼ tsp. ground black pepper •½ tsp. salt •1 tbsp. olive oil • Small sprinkle of crushed chili pepper •1 large yellow onion, diced (optional) Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 400 F. Dice the beets and place on one side of a baking sheet. Peel and dice squash. Place on other half of baking sheet. Keep beets and squash separate on baking sheet so you can remove squash if the beets need more time. Drizzle oil over beets and squash. Roast at 400 F for about 30 minutes. Stir at 15 minutes. Allow the beets and squash to cook until fork tender – the beets may need more time than the squash. Once cooked, remove from oven and set aside.

2. Meanwhile, in a large soup pot, bring the lentils and vegetable broth to a boil, stirring occasionally. Make sure to watch it or it could boil over. Reduce to low and simmer for about 15 minutes. Then, remove from heat.

3. In a medium frying pan, heat the olive oil over low. Add the onion and garlic and saute a few minutes. Next, add in turmeric, curry powder, ginger, cinnamon, black pepper, crushed chili peppers (if using) and nutmeg. Stir well and scrape up the bits from the bottom of the pan. Saute for about 8 minutes, until onion begins to brown.

4. Once lentils are done, add in the coconut milk, lime juice, thyme, sugar, and salt. Then add in onion and spice mixture and squash.

Stir and let simmer for about 15 minutes for flavours to blend.

5. Add beets to garnish each bowl when serving.

Dracula’s Castle & Brasov “I want you to believe — believe in things you cannot.” ~ Bram Stoker

The villages and woodlands of Transylvania are eerie, haunted places.

Traveling through darkly beautiful forests, past abandoned factories and houses towards my destination of Brasov and Bran Castle, I could understand how Bram Stoker drew inspiration (from mere photographs) for his epic tale of Dracula. The area is so steeped in history, legend and bloodlust that even a steely-eyed rationalist like me got goosebumps and felt the hair rise on the back of my neck.

The town of Brasov has a lost-in-time, otherworldly ambiance. The surrounding Carpathian Mountains feel like they’re staring down upon you sinisterly, trapping you. The Medieval atmosphere is just so intoxicating here that you quickly fall under its spell. I kicked off my stay with an enchanting evening featuring traditional Romanian food and wines, enhanced with lively folklore music and dancing.

I spent hours meandering through the cobblestone streets and narrow alleys of Brasov. The colourful Baroque architecture, fountains and statues are breathtaking! The Gothic Black Church is among the oldest in Eastern Europe and looms spookily over the town square.

Torrential thunder and lightning storms are a common occurrence there in the spring and we got caught in a doozy! The rain pelted so wickedly that we scurried for whatever shelter we could find and found ourselves under a teeny awning with a young Romanian girl. I told her Transylvania was beautiful. She looked at me with melancholic eyes and replied, “Yes, but you cannot eat beautiful.”

The impoverished gypsy children we encountered were heartbreaking and mischievous. Progress creeps forward very slowly there. Horse and cart are still a common mode of transportation. The rural people, by and large, remain simple and superstitious.

On the bucket list of any trip to Transylvania is Bran Castle — aka Dracula’s Castle! The castle was completed in 1382, initially serving as a military fortress defending the border of Romania and Wallachin. In later

years Romanian royalty called it home.

The nefarious Vlad the Impaler, son of Vlad II Dracul, was a brutal Wallachin ruler, yet he is held in high regard for thwarting invading forces. Vlad’s real castle lies nearby in total ruins, but he did indeed have a connection to Bran and there is some evidence he was imprisoned in the fortress in 1462.

Admittedly, the castle is not nearly as horrifying and melodramatic as depicted in countless films. But when you climb the steep cliff, pass the ominous stone cross, enter the threshold and ascend the highest tower to peer down upon on the sweeping fields below — you get why this was such an important stronghold.

And being a bona-fide horror flick junkie, I could envision with morbid detail the rotting corpses of would-be marauders impaled on stakes and left on display as a warning, which was Vlad’s trademark — eek!

by Queen Marie. It has many nifty features, including a hidden passage, claustrophobic winding staircases, a dungeon, a wishing well, plus lovely towers and terraces. Our theatrical and comical guide made the tour entertaining and adventurous. The village below has a campy Dracula-themed market. It was hilarious shopping for cheesy vampire souvenirs after exploring Bran Castle.

Count Dracula and Vlad Tepes’ connection may be fictional, but a trippy place like Transylvania and Bran Castle make it bloody easy to believe in things you cannot! It was an atmospheric and fascinating journey, but I fear it left me feeling quite drained…

Seniors and their vintage cars

Bob and Jeanne Chambers

I have known Bob Chambers and his wife Jeanne for over 35 years and one of the best things about doing these interviews is that I get to learn even more about the interesting lives of my subjects. Bob and Jeanne could be described as being “well-travelled” as their careers have taken them to many locations in Canada as well as to the U.S. and Asia with many vintage car experiences along the way.

Bob was born in 1933 in Exeter, Ontario, growing up there and after high school took a one-year electrical course at a tech school.

His first permanent job was at an electrical rewind shop and in 1954 he relocated to a similar job in Calgary, driving there from Ontario in his first car, a 1948 Chevrolet. Two years later he was hired by the Westinghouse corporation who

were installing a hydraulic waterwheel generator near Banff.

Westinghouse then sent him back to a hydro project at White Dog Falls on the Grassy Narrows Indian Reserve north of Kenora, Ontario.

This proved to be a fortuitous assignment as this is where he met Jeanne, who was working for Ontario Hydro, and they were married October 10th, 1958. The next year, Bob bought his first brand new car, a 1959 Ford.

As there were no more big hydro jobs in the works, Bob and Jeanne moved to Toronto where he began working for an insurance company as an inspector of boilers, maintenance, etc. even working 5,000 feet underground in a gold mine in Timmins. Their two daughters, Susan and Cathy, arrived during this time and then It was then off to Brantford, Ontario with Bob as a digester

Right: Examples of the wooden vehicles that Bob builds from scratch. specialist at a pulp and paper mill, then to Prince George and then to Great X Paper in Thunder Bay, Ontario. While there, Bob was taken for a ride in a 1929 Chevrolet by a friend and he enjoyed the experience so much that he started looking around for a vintage car of his own. After making some enquiries, he found and purchased a 1930 Model A Tudor sedan and he was hooked.

Next stop for the Chambers was the Weyerhaeuser pulp mill in Federal Way, Washington (near Tacoma) and the Model A went with them.

Restoration was started on the car and then Bob found a Sport Coupe body in good condition and since this was a more desirable body, Bob

bought it and replaced the Tudor body with it. In 1980 the U.S. authorities had some problems with Bob’s work permit which forced a transfer to the Weyerhaeuser pulp mill in Kamloops, and they have essentially been here ever since. By now, Bob had their Model A Ford running and entered it in the 1980 Spoolmak Parade, where he met up with Vintage Car Club member Glenn Gallagher who also had a car in the Parade. Glenn introduced them to the VCCC and in 1981 Bob and Jeanne joined the Kamloops Chapter and the Model A became a regular participant in our events.

Never one to shy away from a challenge, Bob decided to drive the Model A, by himself,

across the country to visit with family in Ontario.

This trip encompassed 5,500 miles, with the only problem being a leaking water pump which was repaired in North Dakota with the help of some friendly folks in a farm shop. The next challenge was an un-restored 1926 Willys Overland sedan purchased from fellow Club member, Noella Dickinson. In Bob’s small basement workshop, this car was expertly restored and entered in

the Expo ‘86 car show in B.C. Place where it placed second in its class. The next car to grace Bob’s workshop was a wrecked 1919 Chevrolet 490 (sonamed as its new price was $490) touring sedan that was purchased from Stallard McConnell, another Club member who lived in Salmon Arm, and Bob began a full frame-off restoration.

the world’s largest pulp mill so their house was occupied by one of their daughters and Bob and Jeanne moved to Indonesia and stayed there for two years. Then it was over to another pulp mill in Thailand for a few months but when Jeanne developed health problems they moved back to Kamloops for a year and then back to Indonesia for another year and a half. By now, Bob and Jeanne had had enough of foreign living and came back to Kamloops for good and Bob got back to work on the 490 Chevrolet and made it another show winner. Now ready for still another project, Bob went back to old-time restorer, Stallard McConnell, purchasing another car from him, a 1913 Model T Ford express wagon. Stallard’s specialty was creating authentic wooden bodies from the wood off of his own property and although the woodwork was completed when Bob bought this car, the running gear was not. Bob then proceeded to do another groundup restoration on this rare and original B.C. car which had righthand-drive. Upon completion it was entered in the 2003 Hot Nite in the City event where it won the trophy for Best Vintage Truck.

Driving a 100-year-old vehicle in today’s traffic is not much fun and when the Chambers went looking for something a bit more modern to participate in our tours, their friend Glenn stepped up with a 1955

This car is an original un-restored Kamloops vehicle, purchased new from Reid Motors by Yosh Nabata and had only 77,000 miles on it when Bob took it over. He rebuilt the motor and transmission, did some upholstery repairs and made it safe for the road and they continue to enjoy it today.

Storage of our vintage vehicles is always an issue and as the Chambers have limited space available, they have downsized their vehicle collection over the years. The Model A Ford was sold to a collector in Victoria and when the Overland was stored in the White Post Museum in Tappen, some German tourists took a liking to it and took it home with them to Bremen. The Chev 490 has gone to Washington state where it now resides in the famous LeMay Auto Museum, another credit to Bob’s restoration skills. And, finally, the Model T has ended up with a

collector in Mexico.

Over the past 37 years the Chambers have been active participants in the Vintage Car Club where Jeanne had some stints as secretary and Bob has been vice-president, president, national governor and spent seven years on the Hot Nite in the City organizing committee. In their golden years Jeanne sews her marvelous quilts and although Bob no longer has any vehicle restorations in mind, he now builds intricate wooden model vehicles. Bob is one of the best restorers in our group, doing almost everything himself and turning out beautiful projects from his very modest basement shop. Bob tells me that he has never made any money from the cars he has sold but he has enjoyed immensely the learning and doing aspects of auto restoration and interacting with the like-minded individuals in our hobby.

The Secret History of Soldiers: How Canadians Survived the Great War

By Tim Cook A Non-fiction, 472 pages, Allen Lane Publisher, 2018 Available in book stores and through the TNRD library system

Canadians are familiar with the history of WWI, (1914 – 1918), partly through horrific images of soldiers mired in the cold, sticky, and stinky trenches of the Western Front in Europe. Barbed wire, sandbags, No Man’s Land, rats and lice, a military hierarchy requiring obedience, the boredom and strain of waiting for the command to engage the enemy, and the relentless deaths of friends and strangers are components of the soldier’s existence at that time. However, what is less known is how those in the front lines managed to survive.

In The Secret History of Soldiers the author delves beyond an analysis of weaponry and battle tactics, discovering the resourcefulness and resilience of Canadian forces. Tim Cook makes use of years of research and tens of thousands of document from around the world to craft this story of how 350,000 soldiers were able to “stick it” – to live through a hellish war.

Cook gives fascinating and fresh information about what Canada was like shortly before, during, and

immediately after the war. However, the focus is on the men and women in the midst of the war. How did they cope? He details how macabre humour, ribald songs, and skits complete with cross-dressing and burlesque allow some escape from the reality of trench warfare.

Quick-witted and inventive soldiers offered distinctly Canadian forms of entertainment: unique profanities, ditties which changed the lyrics from some popular songs to highlight the more absurd routines in an army, and poetry, poked fun at military life. Interestingly, cartoonists, themselves soldiers, connected with the troops, their sketches passed along from one unit to another and published in thriving newspapers written, published, and distributed by regular soldiers. These means of expression could highlight serious concerns that the men had, and anti-heroes provided mirth, often at the expense of officers. Wise officers understood that the “grousing” in newspapers were a “heads up” to the brass, as well as a way of bolstering morale and bonding: camaraderie

was a hugely positive factor in the mental health of the men.

The author inserts excerpts from letters and diaries written by the soldiers, most of whom are young and whose lives, until they enlisted, centre on their own home communities. The contents give a glimpse into the hardships of war while showing the personality and dreams of those at the Front. Cook usually concludes the excerpts with a brief statement of what happens to the letter writers. Even now a reader feels shock and sadness to learn of the deaths of so many of the men whose words we have just read.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the end of The Great War. Tim Cook suggests that although John Babcock, the last Canadian veteran of the war, passed away in 2010, it is important to reflect on the resiliency, courage, and commitment of our veterans.

Note: The Western Canada Theatre Company recently staged the play Vimy, based on the WWI battle at Vimy Ridge, (1917), one of the battles in which Canadians fought tenaciously. The Canadian National Vimy Memorial, and two Canadian gravesites at Vimy, France, are dedicated to the memory of Canadian Expeditionary Forces killed in World War One. Tim Cook is a specialist in Canadian military history. His book Vimy won the 2018 J.W. Dafoe prize.

It seems as though everything is with our friend Bill one day it snows and then rains for a change, with the usual result Mud. Nevertheless we gave the hun a good boost out of a nest he considered impregnable.Believe me I haven’t forgot Easter Monday for a while or the days following. We’re staying in his dugouts and tunnels at present and they’re not very comfy after a few bombs have made an entrance uninvited.

I have lots of souveniers and if I ever get out to a place that looks like a town I’ll try and send you one. For a start this note paper was in this hole when I got here along with several other articles. They had to leave everything. Some didn’t have time to get their hats and tunics on. They seemed to be pleased to be taken prisoners; still a few showed fight, they’ll never fight again in this world. I got some nice tassels the N.C.O’s wear them on their bayonets so

if the censor will pass it I’ll send you one. Well I’ll stop the war talk or the waste paper basket will grab this on the way. ...I’d like to be coming down Hastings and catch four girls arm in arm blocking the sidewalk. ...Say, what does a girl look like anyhow?

I haven’t seen one for a month now. I didn’t see anything that looked like a photo in your letter, have you forgotten? Hurry up for our time might come any day here. You’ll have to excuse this scribble, Gladys, as fritz didn’t dig these holes for comfort and there’s always someone pushing past.

I stayed over in Fernie two days and then on home, gee but it is great to get home and see all the folks again...I expect to start work by the end of the week. I’m fed up loafing now. An unforgettable veteran Submitted by Rita Joan Dozlaw Walter Baily, from his deathbed in Niagara Falls Ontario, fathered his seventh son. The new little Baily, Henry Walter, born posthumously had the distinction of being a godsend; for, not only did he comfort his widowed mother, he was a solace to his grieving siblings.

The family had recently lost two sons in a farm accident, and two other brothers were greatly missed while in the military; so, wee Henry in his peaceful innocence shone a precious light of hope and joy from his cradle.

As a young boy, Henry was blessed with a great sense of humour, but there was a serious side to him as well. He carried a keen sense of patriotism in his heart. In his late teens, he heard about the U.N. plans to restore peace in the world and told his mom he needed to do that. When he finally finished high school and turned nineteen, he headed for the recruitment offices. It was a bittersweet day in 1955 when, after extensive training in combat skills, he was shipped abroad on a peace keeping mission to Cambodia.

His mother was alone in the big house and considered selling it. Son

Henry took a real shine to little Walt. “Neither one of us can walk,” he muttered into the infant’s ears.

“We’re gonna have to help each other.” Overnight, it seemed, Henry’s sense of fun and games returned. Joe and Cathy recognized the strong bond and suggested Henry help with their baby. The male nanny—before such a label was coined—felt a sense of purpose to his life. Besides enjoying a deep tendency to nurture, he found new zest to remain ‘army fit’ and used a set of ‘Charles Atlas’ weights to strengthen his upper body. With hope, he removed the braces daily to exercise muscles in his lower limbs. Nothing helped his legs; disappointingly, they were prone to lag and throw him off balance.

“I once took my physical freedom for granted,” he told Joe, then sighed with sincerity, “I’m indebted to you for giving me this job!”

“You’re a natural, Henry, with your instinct for caring… and our baby loves you,” he insisted. “We’re indebted to you and love you!”

Joe and his new bride Catherine saved the day by moving in to take care of the matriarch, the home and the baby they were expecting.

Around that time, what Henry thought would be a life-long patriotic career turned out to be a disaster. Exiting the ‘polyclinic,’ the excruciating heat hit him hard, but the disastrous diagnosis that he’d contracted the Poliomyelitis virus slammed him into a fit of fear.

Back at the base, he was medically discharged. He flew home and moved into the over-sized house with his mother, brother and pregnant sister-in-law. He suffered the serious and paralytic disease as bravely as he’d gone in to the armed forces, but his condition was debilitating. His heart and body in pain and his life ruined, despair heightened as his lower limbs became withered, deformed and required braces.

Catherine delivered a strapping boy. “He’s a keeper,” Joe hollered.

“He’s a chubby nine-pounder,” he added as he reared in an imaginary fly fishing line. In giving the newborn his brother’s middle name, Joe honoured Henry. “It was dad’s middle name too,” Joe

North Shore Community Centre Update Submitted by Cathryn Oginski Hello November! Craft fairs abound from one end of the city to the other and the North Shore Community Centre is no exception! We are proud to continue our tradition of our fundraising craft fair on Nov. 3 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

As with many things, our craft fair has changed and evolved with time. Because of the incredible interest, this year our sale will largely feature the exceptional talent of our homegrown crafters with only a few home-based businesses mixed in. There will be door prizes and a raffle for a beautiful handmade quilt. (Tickets can be bought at the front desk anytime between now and Nov. 3 for $2 each).

We will also be featuring a silent auction for a vintage doll carriage with doll, handmade clothes and embroidery pictures as a fundraiser for our seniors programs.

Our concession will include sandwiches as well as drinks and snacks. We will also have our annual bake sale at this time – come right at 10 a.m. to get the best selection of home-baked goods from members of the community!

This Craft Fair is just one of the several fundraising opportunities we’ve had this autumn which couldn’t have been done without our incredible volunteers and donors. Many, many thanks to those who donated to our Book Sale in October and helped us raise over $1,500 for

seniors programs - and to our resident volunteers who oversaw this event! Also great thanks to our volunteers (all who were over 80, by the way!) who helped do dishes at our Community Dinner on October 14. This unexpected challenge was met with several helping hands, and we are so grateful. In appreciation of all that our volunteers do, we will have our annual Christmas party on December 20. There will be special guests, so we hope all our valued volunteers will come!

Although our fundraising is wrapping up for the year, you still have time to support the Community Centre through the purchase of Purdy’s Chocolates.

The deadline is Nov. 22 and catalogues can be picked up at the front desk.

Order forms can be dropped off in the office – cash or cheque, please!

Looking ahead, we will have our Community Dinner on Dec. 9. Dinner will be a traditional turkey dinner with Late Bloomers entertaining.

We also look forward to several Christmas concerts in the month of December. Stay tuned for details.

Hopefully the snow won’t fly as fast as the time has.

The Cattle Dog & the City Dog Submitted by Trudy Frisk The two dogs couldn’t have been more different.

Stanley was a downtown Kamloops dog, a lively, sociable, twenty month old black lab cross who loved to run. A born and bred urbanite, Stanley was familiar with the customs and courtesies of city streets and dog parks.

His opposite, a shepherd-collie cross from a Cariboo ranch, was a working dog, accustomed to open spaces and the rough and ready life of roundups and cattle drives.

Ordinarily the two would never have met. But there was nothing ordinary about B.C. in summer 2017. Wild fires, many on range land, forced thousands of people to evacuate to urban centres hundreds of kilometres away. Those who took their domestic animals weren’t allowed to keep them with them in motels or shelters.

That’s how the Cariboo cattle dog found himself in a cage at the Sandman Centre arena. He was safe and fed. His cage, outside in the shade, was covered by a damp towel in the 30+ c. heat, but a cattle dog isn’t a cage dog. Like any other athlete, he needed to stay fit. How could he do that?

For days thick smoke blanketed the Kamloops area limiting outdoor activity. Both dogs fretted at lack of exercise. On the first clear day, Stanley’s person took him to the airport dog park. He frolicked joyfully through the park, greeting and playing with the other dogs. Suddenly he was surprised by a latecomer. It was the fire evacuee cattle dog wearing a high visibility vest, accompanied by an SPCA volunteer.

“A new playmate!”Stanley rejoiced.

He hurried to welcome him, but the working dog seemed distracted.

duties. Here at the dog park, he immediately saw the potential. Though it was a small space with no cattle, he was willing to improvise. There were twelve dogs of all sizes and ample room to herd them. He greeted each one.

Then he crouched low, circled them, and began to round them up. Within five minutes he’d corralled them into a tight group and put them under the only available tree on a bit of an east slope. He still had his tactical skills. He felt proud.

Then he looked back and saw Stanley.

Stanley was still out there. The working dog resolved to bring him in. He never spoke, nor did Stanley. He headed for Stanley. “Aha!”, thought Stanley, “a worthy opponent!” And the chase was on. Stanley increased speed. The cattle dog upped his pace in hot pursuit, but not hot enough. Stanley showed speed his human had never seen. The working dog was beginning to tire. He couldn’t get ahead of Stanley so he employed cunning. He’d speed up, then slow down, but Stanley matched his pace. In a last determined effort, the cattle dog launched himself at Stanley’s legs, took him down and rolled him over and over in dog feces.

With two crutches, super strong arms and a muscular torso, the former soldier got on his feet and hugged four-yearold Walt. “You’ve grown mighty big, lad. What do ya think yur doin’?” They sat close and looked into each other’s eyes. “Don’t ever get too big for me to grab you up for a bear hug,” the seventh son challenged the lad. “And, young fella… don’t get too big for your britches either!”

The challenge for everyone else, then and now, is not to get too big for our britches in terms of remembering, with humility and honour, all those heroic Henrys and their comrades… living or gone from us; for, they are heroes indeed.

Most of the dogs co-operated, getting into formation, letting the working dog feel at home, giving him purpose. Stanley challenged him, a reminder that, the most outwardly domesticated group may include one free, independent spirit.

the emotional bonds and empathy for Henry’s condition were exceptional. At the same time, his somewhat illusive stubborn streak, in proportion to his streak of humour, disallowed any level of pity to be directed at him. To put it another way, you had to understand there was nothing more sustaining in his life than his own self-esteem which enabled him to take care of himself and a baby. If self-pity or self-doubt had any part of his fine character, you never learned of it. He was long-suffering and marveled when others fulfilled their lives with activities and achievements. The fact that he was alive revived the wit and silly humour. In solemn times, though, he reflected on the many other victims of war and viruses. They’d fought as much for survival as for peace… and, if they came home at all, many returned much worse off than he.

After some time, Joe’s little family had to relocate to Cornwall Ontario to help Catherine’s parents. It shook Henry up to say good-bye. He and his mother eventually sold the big family home, and the eldest brother helped them board a train for Cornwall. It was Henry’s only trip since becoming disabled.

With tears in her eyes, Catherine watched from the window of their new home as Joe helped his brother and elderly mother from the taxi. Using one crutch and leaning heavily on Joe, Henry navigated the front steps, then croaked out the orders: “Put me down, put me down.” Just inside the door, his brother obliged and, with smart-alek brotherly love, left Henry on the floor! “Well, don’t just stand there. Go get my other crutch or do you want me hanging off you all

Overlander Women’s Institute update Overlander WI had their election of officers and Cathy Inskip will be their president again for another year. We had a great Annual General Meeting with all our reports of the activities we have done for the year. We may be a small group of ladies in numbers, but we do accomplish a lot.

In September we had one of our own members talk to us about her trip to South America. She also went on a cruise around Cape Horn and went to the Falkland Islands.

Lynda had her trip chronicled by day with the daily activities and pictures of each day.

Nothing like an arm chair cruise that all our members felt like they were on with all the adventures and shopping.

We had a Workshop to prepare ourselves

for the ACWW Rural Women’s Tea on Oct. 29. Cards, name tags and table center pieces were worked on. We hosted the Rural Tea at the Heffley Creek Hall as we presented Judith Guichon her memory quilt that was created by members of all of B.C. on her life. Also BCWI Provincial Quilt will be drawn on that day too. All ticket sales from the Provincial quilt will be sent to B.C. Children’s Hospital.

Nov. 2 we will have a business meeting and then we will be preparing for our Annual Christmas Bake and Craft Sale on Nov. 24 at Cain’s Your Independent Grocer store at Northhills Mall. We will be there from 9 a.m.

certified organic produce. Much of the produce is donated to local charities or given out in a good food box program run by Gardengate during the summer months.

The horticulture program is a year-round operation. In the winter months, the greenhouse becomes a workshop of sorts where garden tools are repaired, cleaned and sharpened, workbenches and tables are built or repaired, and small woodworking projects are undertaken. In January, it’s time to order seeds.

Gardengate starts all their own seedlings and also grows-to-order for other local organic farms. Seeding starts in February and continues into planting season. When spring arrives, it is time to get outside in the fields again.

Undeveloped farmland is a rare thing in the city and keeping this large plot of prime real estate in production would likely not be possible without the added educational value offered by Gardengate’s innovative training program. Cities around the globe are beginning to recognize the value of urban agriculture, both environmentally and in terms of local food security, and Kamloops can be proud of having such a leading edge establishment in our city.

Some exciting new developments are in the works at Gardengate, with a new commercial kitchen/classroom soon to be constructed. The current indoor workspace is extremely cramped with one small room serving as kitchen, classroom and office space for staff. Not only will it greatly improve the work environment, but the new building will offer a lot of potential for program development and community partnerships. It’s reassuring to know that funders have enough confidence in the good work going on at Gardengate that they are willing to invest in its future and ensure this urban farm continues to “Grow Food and Grow Futures.”

Is there a downside to positivity?

“A stitch in time saves nine.”

“A rolling stone gathers no moss.” “Birds of a feather flock together.”

I was raised on aphorisms and clichés with a significant number of superstitious chants thrown in for good measure. When something caused a lot of trouble for one of us kids, Mom’s axioms were there to glue things together; a readyat-mouth view of life containing predictable promises instead of the messy complexity of real life. I was a verbal klutz though, and “rolling stones ended up in ball parks,” “cookies were put into someone else’s court,” and I never knew for sure whether “frailty or vanity defined a woman.” Once I made a list of sayings said to me when I was a child, wondered if they

influenced how I behaved in the present. Such as, “if at first you don’t succeed try, try again,” a big one and even to this day I have a hard time giving up on anything.

I belong to three sites on Facebook that focus on how to be a better person, how to face life’s challenges and hardships, and how to manage difficult emotions. We live in a culture that doesn’t do emotion and feelings well. But in my toolbox given to me at birth, I had an implement that gave me compassion and I learned to express empathy, listening for feelings beneath the message.

And, I’m fascinated with all things psychological and emotional and like to think that over my life time, I’ve used the implement of empathy to help and serve others.

I’ve also learned about my own emotions. For instance, if I suppress or deny my feelings, they come back to haunt me at a later time. But if I sit with them, feel and label them, do what the Buddhists call become friendly with them, they dissolve like waves into the sea. Then, I’m able to think clearly, avoid acting out my emotions in a hurtful way and move

forward with more calm and serenity.

These days, sayings of positivity cross Facebook in great quantities, intended to encourage and give us something to hang onto when we are in the “dark woods.”

The downside is they reinforce the belief that what we in our culture call negative emotions such as fear, anger, shame, disappointment, sorrow, jealousy and envy are bad and should not see the light of day.

The crashing waves of life will always come to us, people die on us, we acquire chronic diseases, our children’s marriages break up, we have a car accident, we witness human suffering and we watch the earth cry. We will always have feelings about those happenings.

We are not consistently positive every single moment of every day.

We are not always right.

Not always kind. Have moments when we feel broken, discouraged and hopeless. We are not always okay but how we react to these events, learning to manage challenging feelings in a healthy manner, can make all the difference.

As he walked in this foreign land, he spotted a grave marked with a rough wooden cross engraved with these words: “An unknown British soldier, of the Black Watch” (3rd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland).

The knowledge that many men who had been killed in battle remained unidentified – their families left to wonder what had happened and where they lay – bothered him so immensely, David Railton, a chaplain with the British Forces decided to do something that would make a difference in their families’ lives.

His thoughts were recorded by Mary P. Wilkinson in the Imperial

War Museum in London: “How that grave caused me to think!... But, who was he, and who were they [his folk]?...

Was he just a laddie...

There was no answer to those questions, nor has there ever been yet. So I thought and thought and wrestled in thought. What can I do to ease the pain of father, mother, brother, sister, sweetheart, wife and friend? Quietly and gradually there came out of the mist of thought this answer clear and strong, “Let this body – this symbol of him – be carried reverently over the sea to his native land. And I was happy for about five or ten minutes.”

Railton’s initial efforts to see this happen were ignored, but he persisted and eventually King George V gave approval.

Several men were sent to exhume unidentified bodies from graves in the battlefield areas of Ypres,

the Marne, Cambrai, Arras, the Somme, and the Aisne (reports differ as to whether it was four or six locations). At midnight on November 7, 1920, one of those bodies was chosen and four days later, on the 11th and on the second anniversary of the Armistice that ended the war, the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior was dedicated.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Armistice. On November 11th many of us will pause to remember the sacrifices made in times of war – both by those who served abroad and those who served at home, as well as by their families. We will also raise a prayer for peace that our young men and women might no longer be called to take up arms.

This year we also remember Rev. David Railton, a man whose faith and compassion, led him to push for a tomb that would offer

a place for all who lost loved ones, but especially those whose loved ones were never identified, to gather to remember. We remember all those chaplains who served in the trenches, providing pastoral care to the soldiers, offering listening ears, prayers, comfort, whatever was needed in a time when God seemed to be absent from the world. Thank you, David Railton, for knowing what was needed and for persisting. Thank you for living a faith that made a difference to so many.

CNIB is a charitable organization which depends on the generosity of others and at this point, in B.C., only receives 9 percent government funding.

Even though some vision loss happens at birth or by factors that are beyond our control, 75 percent of vision loss is either preventable or treatable.

It is essential to maintain a healthy lifestyle and have your eyes checked regularly to ensure early detection of any eye disease. Once someone is referred to CNIB, we provide rehabilitation and emotional support.

The types of rehabilitation are: Orientation and Mobility (O&M), Independent Living Skills (ILS) and Low Vision (LV).

Orientation is knowing where you are and where you want to go, mobility is the process and ability of travel.

The O&M Specialist will give instruction on orientation and assess the best/safest mode of

travel and either provide or suggest the best tools.

When necessary, the O&M specialist will teach the client how to use a white cane effectively to provide independent travel. The Independent Living Specialist will assess the client’s home for safety, place raised markers on appliances for independent use and teach cooking and daily living skills. The Low Vision Specialist will assess the person’s needs for low vision aids or instruct on how to make the most of useable vision.

Emotional support is provided by: Support Groups, Peer Mentors, Vision Odyssey, and Vision Mates. When someone is newly diagnosed with vision loss, a group adjustmentto-vision loss course (Vision Odyssey) is recommended. A Peer Mentor is someone who has had vision loss for a while and has learned to adjust emotionally to their vision loss and can assist the person newly diagnosed. Support groups provide the opportunity to meet socially with others in a similar situation. Vision Mates are a sighted

The office has some low vision products and independent living aids to allow people to try the product before ordering it. The Brock Central Lions club has been very gracious by providing some expensive aids for those who could not afford them. We also have a good relationship with the Kamloops White Cane club that provides social activities for the blind and partially sighted.

It is essential that the blind/partially sighted community work together to support each other and advocate for each other.

The Kamloops office has also worked with the City of Kamloops to assist the City with audio crossing signals and provide consultation wherever needed.

There is a wonderful group of volunteers who assist the Kamloops office in many ways: office reception provides administrative help and works with clients who come into the office.

Kamloops Rube Band

The “world famous” City of Kamloops Rube Band—well at least “known throughout the Thompson Valley North of Spuzzum.”

RUBE: An awkward, unsophisticated and gullible rustic, ignorant of urban ways. (Webster) And such are the members of the City of Kamloops Rube Band!

The City of Kamloops Rube Band was formed in 1949 when a young Chamber of Commerce member, Ginger Clow, put together a marching

band to promote a Red Cross Blood Donor Clinic. Ginger didn’t play an instrument, but he provided the impetus that got the band from 1949 into the 1960s and beyond. Since then, from an original group of as few as half a dozen assorted (and often incompatible) instruments, the band evolved into the thirty-five

piece group, with members coming from several B.C. cities.

In preparation for Expo ‘67, the band deliberately evolved from a strictly marching band to include some fairly slick and comprehensive comedyshow routines.

The City of Kamloops Rube Band is an amateur band whose membership is based on the criteria, “First a Rube, then a Musician,” and ranges in age from the ‘teens’ to the ‘90s, from plumbers to physicians, from students to former Legislators.

Many of the members have had professional or semi-professional music experience, and virtually all of the members had their first music training in high school bands.

Practice is held at 7:30

p.m. every Monday (except holidays) at the Yacht Club on River Street. The band welcomes prospective members to sit in on any Monday night practice.

The band presents an average of twenty performances each year, many of which are for charity or non-profit public service. And although they are comprised of ‘Rubes’, they have always tried to follow the idea of “look funny and act funny, but PLAY GOOD.” As their postcard claims, the band is available for Weddings, Coronations, Bar Mitzvahs, Cremations, Inaugurations, Supermarket Openings, Cattle Round-ups, Snake Stomps, Flag Lowerings, Barn Raisings, Wigwam Warm-ups and Tattoo Removals.

Because of the volunteer basis of the band, workschedules and family commitments prevent all members from attending all performances, occasionally ending up with “The Dirty Dozen” - a smattering of the basic instruments which reasonably represents the band and the City, and acquits itself remarkably well.

Besides wearing colorful costumes, they have formal uniforms (red blazer / navy slacks) for events such as Remembrance Day, and officially and proudly serve as Ambassadors for the City of Kamloops.

In their pursuit of Musical Fun, they have traveled the World, playing in World-Class events. Among the band’s mementoes from

various trips throughout the Province and the World, are literally dozens of trophies and plaques presented to them for award-winning performances. These awards are held at the City of Kamloops Museum.

Since 1949, the “Rubes“ have thrilled millions of music lovers with their zany antics on parade and on stage. From Dixieland jazz to marches, the band always marches to the beat of a different drum.
