Fizzing Sidewalk Chalk Paint Supplies Needed to Make Fizzing Sidewalk Chalk Paint • A container of baking soda – we used an 8 oz box • 1/2 cup of cornstarch • Warm (almost hot) Water • Food coloring • Vinegar

Spray the paint with a bottle of vinegar and watch the fizz appear.

Mix the dry ingredients and then add water, stirring until it’s not too thick. I think we used about a cup. This paint dries very quickly – but washes off with ease! I love the brilliant colors.

Ice Cream in a Bag The recipe makes enough for 2 people. 7. Ingredients 1 cup half and half 1.5 tsp vanilla extract 1 tbsp sugar ice 1/4 cup salt Ziploc bags 1 Small, 1 Large

Pour 1 cup of half and half into a small ziploc bag. Add 1.5 teaspoons of vanilla extract and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Seal the bag firmly and get any excess air out. In the larger ziploc bag, fill it about 1/2 way with ice. Add 1/4 cup of salt. Then add your small bag and fill with extra ice on top. Seal the large bag. Get gloves or oven mitts for shaking and shake for 6 minutes. *Gloves are needed

since the salt makes the ice extra cold. Take the small bag out of the large bag and rinse the outside of the small bag with cold water. Make sure to rinse out the top part of the bag also (above the seal). Once done rinsing, carefully open the small bag to not get any remaining salt from the outside of the bag inside the bag. The ice cream will be a little icy looking to start. Use a spoon to mix it around and soften it up a bit. Scoop out and enjoy!
Tips for preventing salty ice cream: 1. Properly seal the bag. 2. Rinse off the little bag after shaking. 3. Double bag if still salty.

15 FUN WAYS TO BEAT BOREDOM THIS SUMMER With the 100+ temperature outside, it can be challenging to keep your kids busy this summer and out of the heat. Here are some indoor activities that are super fun the kids can do on their own, or with a parent or caregiver. Some of the activities I did with my own kids and now my grandchildren. And some I found on a website, seventh generation.
pack of playing cards. Little ones can learn crazy eights or Old Maid. Teach the older kids how to rummy or poker, Uno or Skip Bo. 7. Join (or create) a summer reading club. San Antonio local libraries have a summer reading program. Or, create your own. Pick a day of the week to be library day. Create categories and award prizes to whoever read the most books in those categories. If you have three children, have three categories. Make sure every child gets a prize. 8. Play sidewalk chalk games. 9. Make ice cream. See page 10 for the recipe. Does not require an ice cream maker!
1. Camp in. Put the sleeping bags on the floor and have a family slumber party. 2. Build a fort. Let the kids loose in the living room with a pillow and blankets. Turn the fort into an overnight sleepout spot. 3. Have a puzzle race. Stock up on 100-piece puzzles and see who finishes first. For older kids, skip the race and challenge them to complete a mega-piece puzzle. Set up a spot where everyone can join in working on the puzzle. 4. Invite friends over for a game day. Have a kids' games table and an adult one too. Candyland, chess, Monopoly, Clue – let the kids pick their favorites. 5. Get wet. Okay this one is an outside activity. Break out the kiddie pools, hoses, and sprinklers. Or if the budget permits, spend the day at a waterpark. 6. Play (or learn) card games. Amazing how much fun you can have with a single Page 16

10. Blow bubbles. It’s fun to make your own bubbles. 11. Learn something new together. Learn to juggle, play harmonica, do the hula hoop, etc., or take a class in Cooking, yoga, tennis, music, etc. 12. Write/illustrate a comic book. Tap into their creative/comic genius! Is grocery shopping with your child a challenge? With so many products competing for the shopper’s attention, the grocery store is a full-on assault of color, noise, and confusion. It can be a challenge for kids with sensory issues to navigate this environment. In recent years, grocery pickup and delivery have become available, and for parents who are able to plan ahead and take advantage of these options, they can be a lifesaver. Eventually, though, we end up back at the store, and sometimes with a kid in tow whose brain can’t quite take it all in. Today we’ll share some tips to make your grocery shopping trips a little easier.

The best approach is to be prepared before you ever enter the store. Consider some of the following options for how to prepare: • Do heavy work prior to going to the store. • Before going to the store, put the washer on spin cycle and let him sit on top of the washer to get some good sensory input before going to the store (headphones can be used if sensitive to washer noise). • Bring fidget toys to distract and organize. • Add headphones if your child appears sensitive to the noise in the store. • Give the child a task to help him focus on an activity, such as counting something, looking at letters, finding the right cereal. • Bring a weighted vest, weighted stuffed animal, or ankle weights to help give some input during the time you are at the store. • Be aware that each child has different needs. Anticipate what sensory triggers will be present at the store, and prepare for them. Being a detective and planning ahead is always better than trying to fix what is broken. If you know your kiddo will want to go to the toy aisle and the answer is going to be “no” then you also know your kiddo may react poorly. Communicate with your child before and during the interaction to make sure he feels heard. Even if the answer is no, going through the request and denial of the request is better than trying to tell the child “it’s ok.” It is not ok – he is sad, mad, not getting what he wants, and does not feel heard. Keep the standard (no, you cannot have every toy you touch, for example) but hear the request. Try some of these tips the next time you head to the grocery store with your child.
