What is Sensory Processing Disorder? Have you ever been in the grocery store shopping and your child has a huge meltdown, you are trying to calm your child down, but nothing seems to work. And others shopping in the store are giving the you the look, you know the look that says you need to do something with that kid, and often, someone would actually say, “that child could use some discipline.” That parent was me. Was I a bad parent? No, my child has sensory processing disorder.
Some people with sensory processing disorder are oversensitive to things in their environment. Common sounds may be painful or overwhelming. The light touch of a shirt may chafe the skin. Others with sensory processing disorder may: l Be uncoordinated l Bump into things l Be unable to tell where their limbs are in space l Be hard to engage in conversation or play Sensory processing problems are usually identified in children. But they can also affect adults. Sensory processing problems are commonly seen in developmental conditions like autism spectrum disorder. Sensory processing disorder is not recognized as a stand-alone disorder. But many experts think that should change.
A lot of us have been there myself included. I had two other children, they were always okay in the store. Why was this happening to my daughter? Well she was on overload, the grocery store had rows and rows of vegetable, canned goods, chips, cookies, row after row after row and she was over stimulated by all of the sounds, colors, shapes and smells. At the time is was difficult to find answers, finally I heard about sensory processing disorder and with some research, and using some practical strategies we were able to minimize the meltdowns. The good news, today Victoria is quite the grocery shopper, over the years she has developed her own strategies to handle the overload. I want to share this article about sensory processing, it will explain the disorder in more detail. You may want to share this article with your therapist, pediatrician and teachers to help you come up with strategies for your child and minimize those meltdowns. Sensory Processing Disorder is a condition in which the brain has trouble receiving and responding to information that comes in through the senses. Formerly referred to as sensory integration dysfunction, it is not currently recognized as a distinct medical diagnosis.

Symptoms of Sensory Processing Disorder Sensory processing disorder may affect one sense, like hearing, touch, or taste. Or it may affect multiple senses. And people can be over- or underresponsive to the things they have difficulties with. Like many illnesses, the symptoms of sensory processing disorder exist on a spectrum. In some children, for example, the sound of a leaf blower outside the window may cause them to vomit or dive under the table. They may scream when touched. They may recoil from the textures of certain foods. But others seem unresponsive to anything around them. They may fail to respond to extreme heat or cold or even pain. Many children with sensory processing disorder start out as fussy babies who become anxious as they grow older. These kids often don't handle change well. They may frequently throw tantrums or have meltdowns. Many children have symptoms like these from time to time. But therapists consider a diagnosis of sensory processing disorder when the symptoms become severe enough to affect normal functioning and disrupt everyday life. Causes of Sensory Processing Disorder The exact cause of sensory processing problems has not been identified. (Article continues on page 15)

What is Sensory Processing Disorder? (continued from page 5) Treatment for Sensory Processing Disorder Many families with an affected child find that it is hard to get help. That's because sensory processing disorder isn't a recognized medical diagnosis, at this time. Despite the lack of widely accepted diagnostic criteria, occupational therapists commonly see and treat children and adults with sensory processing problems. Treatment depends on a child's individual needs. But in general, it involves helping children do better at activities they're normally not good at and helping them get used to things they can't tolerate.

Treatment for sensory processing problems is called sensory integration. The goal of sensory integration is to challenge a child in a fun, playful way so he or she can learn to respond appropriately and function more normally. One type of therapy is called the Developmental, Individual Difference, Relationship-based (DIR) model. The therapy was developed by Stanley Greenspan, MD, and Serena Wieder, PhD. A major part of this therapy is the "floor-time" method. The method involves multiple sessions of play with the child and parent. The play sessions last about 20 minutes. During the sessions, parents are first asked to follow the child's lead, even if the playtime behavior isn't typical. For example, if a child is rubbing the same spot on the floor over and over, the parent does the same. These actions allow
The sessions are tailored to the child's needs. For instance, if the child tends to under-react to touch and sound, the parent needs to be very energetic during the second phase of the play sessions. If the child tends to overreact to touch and sound, the parent will need to be more soothing. Should I add my Child to Interest Waiting Lists? This is a question many parents ask themselves when their child is first diagnosed with physical, mental health care needs or a disability. Many of the waiver programs have a very long waiting list. As of the writing of this article some of the programs have a wait list up to 10+ years. The waiver list is just that, a list that you put your child on in case they ever need the services. When they get to the top of the waiver interest list, eligibility will be determined. Many families feel like their child will not qualify due to their income, keep in mind when your child reaches 18 they are an adult. Once they are out of school and continue to need some time in a day program it will cost money. Even if you feel like your child will be able to live and work independently you should put them on the waiting lists. Below is a list of the Texas Medicaid Waivers and a brief description. You will find their phone numbers in the Resource Directory of Exceptional Kids, listed under Medicaid Waiver Programs: Community Living Assistance and Support Services (CLASS): gives home and community-based supports to people with related conditions. Deaf Blind with Multiple Disabilities (DBMD): gives services for people who are deaf-blind or have a related condition that leads to deaf-blindness, and who have another disability. Home and Community-based Services (HSC): gives services and supports to people with intellectual disability (ID) or a related condition who live with their families, in their own homes, or in small group homes with no more than 4 beds. Medically Dependent Children Program (MDCP): gives services to families caring for children and young adults as an alternative to receiving services in a nursing facility. Texas Home Living (TxHmL): gives services to people with an intellectual disability (ID) or a related condition who live in their home or their family’s home. Youth Empowerment Services (YES): gives home and community-based services to children who otherwise would need psychiatric inpatient care or whose parents would turn to state custody for care. Also, here are a couple of resources that have been very helpful, I pulled some of the information for this article from www.navigatelifetexas.org. Fun snacks for kids This recipe can be a combination of the fruits and vegetables mentioned or be creative with other fruits and vegetables your child will enjoy. This is a fun snack for the family to make together. Enjoy! Prep time 15 minutes Ingredients: • 2 stalks of celery • 2 tbsp. Peanut butter or substitute cream cheese • 5 red seedless red grapes • 5 green seedless grapes • 1-2 slices of a kiwi • 1-2 slices of an apple • 1-2 slices of an orange • 1-2 cherry tomatoes • 1-2 cucumber slices • Edible eyes Directions: 1. Prepare the fruit and vegetables by washing and slicing the apple, orange and celery. (make any substitutions to fit your child’s taste.) 2. Spread the peanut or cream cheese on a slice of celery, add grapes, or cherry tomatoes (see photo for ideas) Page 36

A Project MEND Story... Christopher is 6 years old and lives with Hydrocephalus and Lumbar Scoliosis. Each day he faces barriers in his pursuit to be mobile. Because of his physical challenges, his doctor recommended a Tilt-in-Space specialized wheelchair. Prior to receiving a wheelchair through Project MEND, his father used a regular baby stroller to transport him, making his safety a concern. Since receiving his specialized wheelchair, Christopher's father has the proper means to transport him to doctors' appointments, school, and on daily outings in the community. Because of YOUR donations, Christopher is the proud owner of this refurbished and sanitized TIl-in-Space wheelchair, and experiences improved mobility and quality of life.
You can help Project MEND provide medical equipment to others in need.
Volunteering – Great activity for family Volunteers are needed to help clean, professionally sanitize, and organize donations of medical equipment. Join us for a few hours of fun, hard work, and leave with a sense of accomplishment as we help those in need! Volunteer Saturdays: 2nd Saturday of the month (some exceptions occur) at the Project MEND Warehouse 1201 Austin St. San Antonio, TX 78208 For more information, contact the warehouse staff at (210) 223-7283. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age or 16 years of age or older and accompanied by a parent.
