www.entrustedphc.com How to make playdough Your kids can be very involved in the playdough-making process, helping you mix ingredients before a parent or guardian boils the water. What you need: 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 cups warm water 1 cup kosher salt 2 tbsp. vegetable oil 1 tbsp. cream of tartar Food coloring

Add the warm water to the mixture and mix well.

Directions: Combine the flour, kosher salt, vegetable oil and cream of tartar together in a large bowl. Parent or guardian boils water in a saucepan, then lets it cool down a bit until it's warm (to the point where you can handle it without burning your hands).

If you'd like to create different colored playdough, separate the dough into equal parts and roll them into balls. Add food coloring(s) of your choice to each ball until the mixture is a desired color. Store playdough mixture in an airtight container at room temperature.

Ideas to enhance your kids’ skills!

Are you looking for low-cost ideas that can stimulate creativity, enhance cognitive skills, and foster overall growth and development. Here are some ideas that will not break the bank. Go on a sensory adventure!

The great outdoors is FREE and San Antonio has many parks to explore and will provide sensory experiences. Take children on a nature walk where they can listen to birds singing, feel different textures. Collect rocks, leaves, sticks, flowers to create a tactile experience that engages their senses and encourages creativity.

down a piece of cardboard or box and have races. Structured play

Choose puzzles and games that can be adapted for different skill levels and abilities. These activities are great for fine motor skills and games are great for social interaction, encourage teamwork and patience.

Messy play

Kids love to play with playdough store bought or you can make your own, (see the homemade recipe on page 4, let the kids help great for skill development). Rice play (fill a tray with or container with rice), have cups, bowls spoons so kids can scoop and pour. Hide fun objects in the rice for them to find. To keep it fun, choose a different theme each time you play. Play with shaving cream and have your child write numbers, letters and draw pictures. These activities are great for eye hand coordination, spatial awareness and much more. Art and crafts

Drawing and painting on different surfaces such as a table, floor, easel or on objects such as rocks, wood pieces will strengthen different muscles. Use scissors to cut out shapes from paper or cardboard. Painting with different objects using (bubble wrap, cotton balls, forks, string) or making creatures out of left over boxes from the holidays, egg cartons, cardboard paper towel holders. This is work on their fine motor skills, planning skills, patience, problem solving and hand eye coordination. Construction play

Building and stacking blocks, small boxes, Legos or Duplo, dominos, old puzzle pieces. Build a fort out of blankets, boxes, chairs to hang out in. Use small cars and roll them Page 6

EK101_06-06.indd 1

Science exploration

Simple science experiments and adapted for all skill levels. Explore the reaction of baking soda and vinegar. Take a plastic bottle and add water, oil and glitter or small toys and shake up. Oil, water and food coloring are a fun activity to make a lava lamp. These experiments offer tactile and visual stimulation, making and learning a multisensory experience. Rhythmic music-making

Music is the universal language that transcends abilities. Create simple instruments with household items, rice-filled containers or bells attached to a string, two sticks. Children can explore rhythm and sound, fostering sensory integration and motor skills. Kindness and inclusion projects

Teach children about empathy, kindness, and inclusion through projects that benefit the community.

Create accessible care packages, craft cards for seniors at a nursing home or children in the hospital. These activities emphasize the importance of giving back and fostering a sense of belonging.

For Students Who Learn Differently, Winston Is The Difference One in five children in the United States has a learning difference - a neurological disorder affecting people’s ability to either interpret what they see and hear or to link information from different parts of the brain. These differences can affect how well children read, write, speak, compute, and handle other similar tasks. For nearly 40 years, The Winston School San Antonio has provided a life-changing experience for students in grades K-12 who are unable to excel in traditional classroom environments. The mission of The Winston School San Antonio is to provide a personalized, college preparatory education to students with high potential and identified learning differences. A Winston School graduate is confident, well-rounded, and a life-long advocate. Confident… Learning differences can manifest themselves in many ways and hinder academic success or negatively impact social behaviors and self-esteem. Our small class sizes allow for the personal attention or focus group instruction that fosters academic and personal growth. Our curriculum includes organizational and study skills to support academics and foster classroom success, emphasizing students’ strengths, restoring self-esteem, and building confidence. Well-Rounded… Page 12

EK101_12-12.indd 1

The Winston School provides diverse enrichment and athletic programs to foster the spirit of creative expression, promote social and emotional development, and enhance the character development skills that are learned through individual and team activities. Additionally, our Guidance Curriculum includes skill-based lessons designed to help all students in kindergarten through 12th grade develop competence in essential life skills. …Life-long Self Advocacy The College Counseling Department and Winston CARES program support students beyond high school graduation and into the next stage of their journey. Winston provides an avenue for advising to ensure graduates are empowered to ask for college and career guidance, academic support services, resources for campus housing, and health, emotional, and social needs. The Center for Neurodiversity Beyond day school opportunities, our Center for Neurodiversity provides additional services, including psychoeducational testing and consulting, ADHD and executive functioning coaching, dyslexia therapy, academic intervention, and college admissions counseling. Supplemental Needs Trust – A Wonderful Planning Opportunity for Persons Living with Disabilities

According to the US Census Bureau, over 27% of the U.S. population is under some form of disability. Many of these people rely on means-tested public benefits (i.e., benefits with financial hardship requirements), and the number of Americans living with disabilities is expected to increase as the population ages. The need for specialized planning for these individuals is rapidly growing.

It is best to consult with an attorney specializing in elder or disability law to ensure that a new SNT is appropriate for each individual’s unique circumstances. But supplemental needs trusts provide persons living with disabilities and their loved ones a wonderful opportunity to improve quality of life while maintaining eligibility for public benefits.

One issue faced by many persons living with disabilities arises when they come into a sum of money from an inheritance or lawsuit/ settlement. These new assets can often cause them to lose vitally important means-tested benefits. A supplemental needs trust (SNT) is a tool used to preserve governmental benefits while providing a source of funds that provide for supplemental needs not covered by government assistance. This includes a wide array of goods/services, from adaptive aids and caregiver expenses to transportation and even vacations. An SNT allows these funds, managed by another person (the “trustee”), to be made available to the individual living with disabilities while not being treated as a resource that would otherwise disqualify them from public benefits.

Brennen Boze Attorney Law Offices of Carol Bertsch 8703 Broadway San Antonio, TX 78217 Ph: 210.892.4555 Fax: 210.892.4505 bboze@assistingseniors.com

Parents including supplemental needs trusts in their wills can allow a child living with disabilities to inherit assets without losing necessary benefits like SSI and Medicaid. This type of SNT is called a “third party SNT” because it is funded by the assets of someone other than the person living with disabilities. If certain key requirements are met, the person living with disabilities can even create a “self-settled” SNT using their own funds. However, self-settled SNT’s must have a provision to pay back the State for benefits received during that person’s lifetime, while third-party SNT’s are not required to have a “pay-back provision” -- so using the right type of trust is key.

We are here for the messy parts. Do You Have a Child or a Loved One with a Disability?

We do supplemental needs trusts. We can help you plan.

We always love hearing from our readers: Just want you to know your EK magazine is a welcome sight! I'm sitting in the atrium at North Central Baptist hospital after visiting my 12 year old grandson in the pediatric ICU. You do a great job with the magazine! Keep up the good work, please. ~~Granny Sue
