Featured Article 5 Tips to Help You Prevent Vision Loss Michelle Mai Program Associate, Center for Healthy Aging

We use our eyes to complete daily tasks like prepar ing meals, engaging in physical activity, taking the correct medication and dosage, protect ourselves from falling, and so much more. That's why it's important to keep them healthy, so we're seeing our best and maintaining our independence. If we don't, the quality of our vision could decline-from a combination of age and lifestyle factors. These simple guidelines can help you maintain your vi sion health. Eat well for healthy vision Consuming a well-balanced diet rich in nutrients can help your vision. Studies have found that omega-3 fatty acids play a role in reducing age related eye diseases and dry eyes, which are com mon as we age. Here is a list of foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids that you can introduce into your diet: Leafy Greens Spinach Kale Brussels Sprouts Fish Salmon Sardines Cod Nuts and seeds, like walnuts, chia seeds, and flaxseed, are good choices for omega-3 fatty acids as well.

I Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes The sun radiates ultraviolet (UV) rays, which are wavelengths that can't be seen with the human eye. While UV rays are known to cause sunburn, long exposure to UV rays can also be harmful to your eyes, causing short and long-term damage. An example of short-term damage is not being able to see after spending time on the slopes or shovel ing snow. This is called snow blindness, which is caused by UV rays reflecting off the ice and snow. You won't notice you are experiencing snow blind ness until you go inside, and it usually goes away in a few hours. Long-term damage occurs from years

02057.23.3.013.indd 1

of prolonged sun exposure, and results in cataracts and macular degeneration. To protect your eyes from the sun when you are outdoors, wear protective sunglasses with UV pro tection and a brimmed hat. Manage your health conditions to minimize risk According to a recent study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), poorer health is a known association of chronic conditions and older people with vision impairment. Because of the aging US population, the public health burden of vision impairment and chronic diseases is expected to increase. Certain health conditions can affect your eye health, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Minimize your risk of developing eye diseases by managing your chronic condition(s) to perform daily tasks and engage in social activities. Limit your screen time to lessen vision discomfort Using our smartphones, tablets, and computers to watch/stream shows, play games, and connect with family and friends has become part of every day life. However, looking at a screen for an ex tensive amount of time can cause eye strain, blurry vision, and dry eyes. Remember to take breaks when using your devices. You can give the 20-20-20 rule a shot: Every 20 minutes, look away about 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds. Doing this quick exercise could reduce strain. If you start to experience any vision discomfort, make sure to talk to your eye doctor. Schedule an annual eye exam The best way to know if your eyes are healthy is to see an eye doctor each year. According to the CDC, many common eye diseases, such as glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, and age-related macular degeneration, show no warning signs but can be detected by your eye doctor before they worsen. An optometrist or ophthalmologist can perform routine eye exams to check your vision and the health of your eyes. Your eye doctor might recommend that you get a dilated eye exam, which is the only way to detect these diseases in their early stages. During your dilated eye exam, drops are placed into your eyes for your pupils to widen, allowing more light to enter. After 30 minutes, your eye doctor can see the inside of your eyes and check the health of the retina, optic nerve, and other parts that cannot be seen otherwise. This process will allow the eye doc tor a better look into the health of your eyes. Seemoreon/ine@SeniorLivingChoices.com Page 13

Featured Article Senior Money Scams: 8 Tips to Protect Yourself ............................................................

Millions of older adults fall prey to financial scams every year. Use these tips from NCOA and the Women's Institute for a Secure Retirement to protect yourself or an older adult you know. 1. Be aware that you are at risk from strangers-and from those closest to you

Over 90% of all reported elder abuse is committed by the older person's own family members, most often their adult children, followed by grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and others. Com mon tactics include depleting a joint checking account, promising but not delivering care in exchange for money or property, outright theft, and other forms of abuse, including physical abuse, threats, intimidation, and neglect of ba sic care needs. Everyone is at risk of fi nancial abuse, even people without high incomes or assets. Understand the top 10 most common scams targeting seniors, so you can spot one before it's too late. 2. Don't isolate yourself-stay involved!

Isolation is a huge risk factor for elder abuse. Most family violence only occurs behind closed doors, and elder abuse is no exception. Some older people self isolate by withdrawing from the larger community. Others are isolated because they lose the ability to drive, see, or walk about on their own. Some seniors fear be ing victimized by purse snatchings and muggings if they venture out. Visit the Eldercare Locator to find services nearby that can help you stay active. Or contact your local senior center to get involved. 3. Tell solicitors: 11 I never buy from (or give to) anyone who calls or visits me unannounced. Send me

something in writing."

Don't buy from an unfamiliar company and always ask for and wait until you receive written material about any offer or charity. Neighborhood children you know who are selling Girl Scout cook ies or school fundraising items may be an exception, but a good rule of thumb is to never donate if it requires you to write your credit card information on any forms. It's also good practice to obtain a salesperson's name, business identity, telephone number, street address, mail ing address, and business license number before you transact business. And always take your time in making a decision. 4. Shred all receipts with your credit card number

Identity theft is a huge business. To pro tect yourself, invest in-and use-a paper shredder. Monitor your bank and credit card statements and never give out per sonal information over the phone to someone who initiates the contact with you. 5. Sign up for the "Do Not Call" list and take yourself off multiple mailing lists

Visit Do Not Call to stop telemarketers from contacting you. Be careful with your mail. Do not let incoming mail sit in your mailbox for a long time. When sending out sensitive mail, consider dropping it off at a secure collection box or directly at the post office. You also can regularly monitor your credit ratings and check on any unusual or incorrect information at AnnualCreditReport.com. To get more tips on protecting yourself from fraud, visit On Guard Online, which has inter active games to help you be a smarter consumer on issues related to spyware, lottery scams, and other swindles. What is affordable housing? The Low Income Housing Tax Credit program is managed by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Through the program, owners of multi-family homes designate as tax credit properties, to low-income residents for a reduced rent. Senior apartments that advertise the word 'affordable' are generally tax credit apartment communities. You will also often see the words "Income Limit Restrictions Apply" Each tax credit senior apartment community has different income requirements so it's important to ask when contacting them. These communities have many of the same amenities as the 55 & 62+ communities, some are resort style pool, movie theatre, library, exercise room, social activities. Page 22

Fun Ways to Connect with Your Grandkids Lindsay Feeley CMO at KRo Events One of the most special family relationships is often between grandparents and their grandkids. And yet, it can sometimes be hard for grandparents to connect with grandkids, especially if they live in a different area, have been staying home during the pandemic or due to time between visits. It might seem like your grandkids love to look at screens, but they secretly (or not so secretly!) also love spending time with you. As a mom of two young boys, I've seen grandparents come up with some interesting ways to connect, and others who struggle to engage. Below are some fun ideas for grand parents who might be looking for new ways to relate with their grandkids of all ages.

Fun ideas for a visit with your grandkids Explore

• Go for a walk around the neighborhood • Visit a park or zoo • Have a scavenger hunt, especially around holiday times ('let's see how many flags we can spot") • Bring a magnifying glass and take a closer look at nature • Plan a trip together - either to a local desti nation or somewhere around the world. Talk about the local culture, where you would love to stay, what you would eat and the places you would explore. For little kids, this is a great make-believe game. For older kids, check out the destination on the internet, maybe they will have the opportunity to go in the future! Create

• Breakout the crayons / markers / paper, and draw together • Make a card for a family member, neighbor, classmate • Construct a castle / car / dragon from age appropriate blocks • Bake a delicious treat or try a new recipe • Tie-dye a shirt / socks / pillowcase together in their favorite colors

02057.23.3.031.indd 1

Encourage

• Start a collection: rocks, stamps, postcards, whatever they might be into • Volunteer to clean up the park or help a local charity • Be the audience if they love to tell stories or act Play

• Find a boardgame that works for their age or teach them to play chess / checkers / cards • Try a word puzzle such as sodoku or word search - for older kids, make it a race against you or the clock • Blow bubbles - great for little kids, there are lots of new ways to make bubbles these days such as an extra-large wand or bubble machine • Read together - get a new book in a series that they love or read an old favorite from grandma's / grandpa's house

Fun Ways to Connect with Your Grandkids Virtual ideas for a video call with grand kids

• Tell them a story- little kids love story time even virtually. Older kids love hearing real stories from your childhood such as tales of a time bef ore computers, phones that were plugged into the wall, that time it snowed 6 feet... • Don't have time for a video call? Send caregivers a video of you reading a book or telling a story that they can replay for many years to come. • Find a game that you can play together, on screen. • Get two matching bingo sets, mail one to each person who will be on the phone or video call. Take turns calling numbers and see who wins! • For older kids, charades/ pictionary or even trivia-style games can be played virtually • For younger kids, i-spy and simon says are fun virtual games • Have a scavenger hunt around the house: Create a list of 10 items that they have to find and bring to the computer screen, such as: something blue, something squishy, pic ture of an animal, something you wear on your head etc. Make it a race, first one to come back to the screen with the items wins. • Be a penpal - write notes/ postcards/ draw a picture and send them via USPS. Have caregivers help if they are not old enough to write back. • Get the wiggles out - do yoga together, have a dance party, or do some silly jumping • Have a virtual tea party - invite their fa vorite dolls / stuffed animals. For older kids, make a fancy hot chocolate together during a video call.

ing, schoolwork, sharing with a sibling, vol unteering in the community or submitting their college applications. • Getting lots of yes / no answers? Try re phrasing the questions - ask them to tell you about an experience / their day / that field trip last week/ a recent soccer game. Do a safety check with caregivers

Depending on age, ask their caregivers if it's ok before heading out on an adventure. Ask caregivers to provide games / supplies that are age appropriate. If grandkids are visiting your home, consider putting away valuables and locking away chemicals / alcohol / prescriptions to keep everyone safe. Consider allergies bef ore providing snacks for grandkids. https://www.ncoa.org/article/fun-ways-to connect-with-your-grandkids

Looking for things to talk about with grandkids?

• Ask their caregivers what they are inter ested in or ask grandkids directly. Ask about their favorite activity, show, book, a new class they are taking, their best friend. • Find moments to tell them that you are proud of their hard work whether it's color-

Featured Article Senior Money Scams: 8 Tips . . . . . . . . . . . . .to . . . . . . . Protect . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Yourself ...................

6. Use direct deposit for benefit checks to prevent checks from being stolen from the mailbox Using direct deposit ensures that checks go right into your accounts and are protected. Clever scammers or even scrupulous loved ones have been known to steal benefits checks right out of mailboxes or from seniors' homes if they are laying around. 7. Never give your credit card, banking, So cial Security, Medicare, or other personal information over the phone unless you ini tiated the call Misuse of Medicare dollars is one of the largest scams involving seniors. Common schemes include billing for services never delivered and selling unneeded devices or services to benefi ciaries. Protect your Medicare number as you do your credit card, banking, and Social Se curity numbers and do not allow anyone else to use it. Be wary of salespeople trying to sell you something they claim will be paid for by Medicare. Review your Medicare statements to be sure you have in fact received the ser vices billed, and report suspicious activities to 1-800-MEDICARE. 8. Be skeptical of all unsolicited offers and thoroughly do your research Be an informed consumer. Take the time to call and shop around before making a pur chase. Take a friend with you who may offer some perspective to help you make difficult decisions. Also, carefully read all contracts and purchasing agreements before signing and make certain that all of your require ments have been put in writing. Understand all contract cancellation and refund terms. As a general rule governing all of your interac tions as a consumer, do not allow yourself to be pressured into making purchases, signing contracts, or committing funds. These deci sions are yours and yours alone. Protect your loved ones: Signs to look for If you know or care for an older adult, here are some additional warning signs that may indicate they are the victim of financial abuse:

There are unusual recent changes in the person's accounts, including atypical with drawals, new person(s) added, or sudden use of a senior's ATM or credit card. The senior suddenly appears confused, un kempt, and afraid. Utility, rent, mortgage, medical, or other essential bills are unpaid despite adequate income. A caregiver will not allow others access to the senior. There are piled up sweepstakes mailings, magazine subscriptions, or "free gifts," which means they may be on "sucker lists."

Every state operates an Adult Protective Ser vices (APS) program, which is responsible for receiving and investigating reports of elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation, and in most states, the abuse of younger adults with severe disabilities. APS is the "911" for elder abuse. Anyone who suspects elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation should make a report. The reporter's identity is protected. APS services are confidential, so the reporter may not be able to learn the outcome of the case. APS respects the right of older persons to make their own decisions and to live their lives on their own terms. In cases of cogni tive impairment, however, APS will take steps to protect the older person to the de gree possible. Steps to take if you're a victim of a scam If you think you've been scammed, don't be afraid or embarrassed to talk about it-wait ing could only make it worse. Immediately: Call your bank and/or credit card company. Cancel any debit or credit cards linked to the stolen account. Reset your personal identification number(s). Also, contact legal services and Adult Protec tive Services if warranted. To find your lo cal offices, visit the Eldercare Locator or call them toll-free at 1-800-677-1116 weekdays 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET. Seemoreonline@SeniorlivingChoices.com
