Diamonds
In January 1905 the largest diamond was found in Cullinan and in 1907, was presented to King Edward VII of England by the Government of the Transvaal. The diamond was sent to Europe to be cleaved and polished. A small army of detectives boarded a ship with a carefully sealed package which they deposited in the Captain’s safe, but unbeknown to them, the real Cullinan stone went by ordinary mail, costing just a few shillings.

Sir Ernest Oppenheimer used the same method when he sent the Jonker Diamond (the 4th largest diamond found at the time) abroad.
Trains
161 years ago on Tuesday 26 June 1860 the little town of Durban was bursting with excitement with the launch of the first railway in South Africa, and the second in Africa. Egypt opened the first railway in 1856 which ran between Alexandria and Cairo. Crowds gathered at Market Square (Pine Street) while Bishop Colenso blessed the train. The engine was called Natal and it had one passenger coach with three compartments. The one in the centre could accommodate 8 to 10 passengers in first class. The two end compartments could accommodate 20 passengers in second class.
The train travelled from Market Square to the Point. The public paid one shilling for a return ticket, with some 800 people travelling to the Point and back on this day.
