IT’S never too soon to introduce children to music – the sooner the better,” enthused Barbara Organ, 82, of Rochedale, as she enjoyed morning tea with friends at Springwood State School while a 10-year-old violinist helped tune in the orchestra for a performance.

Musical teacher Ann McClintock said the school’s musical morn-

ing teas had been a highlight event of Logan Seniors Week for the past four years. More than 80 seniors were at the school to enjoy and encourage the young musicians as part of another week of senior celebrations in August. Barbara Organ – an interesting name, we thought. A musical connection?

Tea & timpani at Springwood as seniors enjoy school’s music Continued from Page 1 “Well, I do play the organ,” said Barbara who is also an accomplished piano player. During her musical career in the 1950s and 60s she backed many Australian star performers.

Born in Toowoomba, Barbara carried on her piano playing despite a battle with polio which took hold when she was in her early twenties.

“They said I would never walk again, but here I am on a frame and I spend as much time as I can going to functions and events with my friends,” she said. And a lovely spin-off was when she met Bert, her future husband “and love of my life”, at a rehabilitation centre in Melbourne. Sadly, Bert passed away four years ago.

“He still answers the phone when I’m not home,” Barbara said. “I kept his voice on the answering machine and he takes my messages.”

Barbara’s life is made fuller by the loving support of her four daughters.

“We find it hard to catch mum and home,” said daughter Roslyn. “She’s always out and about.”

Barbara says she has four lovely daughters, but no sons.

“But I’ve got six grandchildren – all boys, so I have been rewarded and I’m, very lucky.”

Ann McClintock said Springwood State School now had more than 100 students in musical classes and about 60 children in the school choir.

“They’re very enthusiastic about their instruments and really enjoy and being appreciated by the seniors’

groups who visit,” Ann said.

“And it’s good to see them on a brass or string instrument, rather than fiddling with an iPod!” Seniors Newspaper writer Jim Bowden, a former jazz drummer, has four children and four grandchildren – all musicians.

“Jeannie is a drummer, Jessica plays the clarinet and guitar, and Mark and Steve are also guitar players. Grandson Jamali Bowden, 16, plays trumpet and co-hosts a folk and jazz music segment on Lismore Radio FM,” Jim said.

“We are all born possessing certain gifts and talents, and parents and grandparents can play a vital role in harnessing these gifts.

“Of course, not all children who love music will become prodigies, and we shouldn’t let this be our goal. Rather, if you have a child or grandchild who seems to be interested in music, there are simple ways to further stimulate their interest.

“Instilling the love of music in a child is easier than you think.”

Jim says that besides improving creativity, learning music cultivates many skills that will continue to be useful to children throughout their lives.

“There is a significant relationship between music instruction and positive performances in such areas as reading comprehension, spelling, mathematics, listening skills and primary mental abilities,” he said.

“Many studies have found a correlation between music abilities and academic achievement.”

Changes to rego labels from 1st October 2014

THE days of scraping a registration label off the corner of the front windscreen are numbered, following a Newman Government decision to end the stickers.

This will bring Queensland into line with most other Australian states which have already gone stickerless.

From 1 October 2014 you won’t get a registration label when you register your light vehicle. This includes cars, motorcycles, light trailers, light caravans, light buses and motorised wheelchairs.

Recreational boats will still need to display registration stickers. You need to display a rego label up until 30 September. After this date you can remove it, but this is optional. Advanced technology allows the detection of unregistered vehicles using number plate recognition, rather than citing a sticker on the front windscreen.

community news Energy Deregulation Bills leave Queensland seniors cold PROPOSED changes to Queensland energy regulations would leave older people out in the cold without adequate consumer safeguards, National Seniors Australia has said. As they now stand, the Bills would remove the safety of government price setting and allow the market to set prices without providing sufficient protections for consumers, National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill told the State Development, Infrastructure and Industry Committee at state parliament this week. In contrast to other commercial contracts, the changes would allow energy retailers to increase the price of energy contracts at any time, with no minimum notification period. O’Neill called on the government to include measures such as a minimum notification period of price changes including increases to fees, charges and the lowering of any discounts. “This would ensure that they can change providers if they are unhappy with proposed price increases,” he said. A cap on termination fees would also help consumers avoid becoming unfairly

locked into electricity contracts and ensure those experiencing hardship were not punished for late payment of accounts. “An effective public awareness campaign is needed to promote greater public understanding of the proposed changes,” O’Neill said.

He also called for a ministerial consumer advisory committee to be set up to ensure consumers’ concerns and interests were represented, a less confusing billing system and fortnightly or at least monthly billing to help older people budget more easily.

O’Neill said people living in retirement villages and manufactured homes would also face higher electricity costs while receiving limited access to concessions and a lower standard of consumer protection than customers connected directly to the grid.

“This anomaly exists as many residents of retirement villages and manufactured homes have no direct connection to the electricity grid and buy their electricity from the park owner through an on-selling agreement.”

Housing price boom hits dreams of baby boomers THE housing price boom is dashing the retirement dreams of baby boomers.

This once asset-rich class, which has long been blamed for outbidding Gen Y house hunters, is now struggling under the weight of record property prices.

The Baby Boomer Housing Lifestyle Report, by realestateview.com.au,

has found that 39.7% of baby boomers in New South Wales 50 to 69 are uncomfortable with the level of house prices.

And 20% feel they are being priced out of the market.

Baby boomers either need to change their expectations for retirement, or look outside of cities for affordable options.

Traditionally, retirees would sell their home and move to regional areas.

But it appears there is currently very little movement. Market watchers say it’s a combination of things – baby boomers don’t want to move away from the lifestyle that is on offer and secondly, the cost of relocation is not cheap.

A review of Queensland’s retirement village laws is currently underway to improve protection for residents and enhance the long term viability of the industry.

Retirement villages are a popular accommodation choice for retirees and seniors, with around 28,000 residents currently living in 317 retirement villages throughout Queensland.

Minister for Housing and Public Works, Tim Mander, said as part of the review retirement village residents and operators are being invited to have their say via an online feedback form on the Government’s ‘Get Involved’ website.

A consultative Regulatory Impact Statement (RIS) has been released to allow all interested

parties to provide feedback on the proposals.

Feedback is being sought on a range of topics including village closure, best practice standards, alternative financial models and early payout of a resident’s exit entitlement after they leave the retirement village. Mr Mander said comments on the proposed changes will help ensure a balance of power between residents and operators and will help the industry continue to meet the needs of the growing seniors population. The consultation is open for six weeks and all submissions must be received by 5pm Wednesday 24 September 2014. For more information, visit www.getinvolve d.qld.gov.au.

THE story of the 1944 Battle of Leyte Gulf is virtually unknown in Australia according to Gold Coast resident David Mattiske.

Yet, Leyte Gulf, located in the Philippines, was not only the largest naval battle of World War II but the largest naval battle in history. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Fought between combined US and Australian forces and the Imperial Japanese Navy, the Leyte Gulf campaign led to the liberation of the Philippines after Japanese invasion in 1941.

David Mattiske served in HMAS Shropshire during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Over the years he has written much about this WWII Battle. To observe the 70th anniversary, the Gold Coast Navy Week Committee is organising a commemoration service and reunion luncheon to be held on Sunday October 19 at Currumbin RSL, 165 Duringan Street, Currumbin, Gold

community news Organ sounds bring back memories of the Regent at August celebrations

Australia’s foremost concert artist and pianist Tony Fenelon will be performing during the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Theatre Organ Society of Australia (Queensland division) at the Kelvin Grove State High School this month

BRISBANE’S iconic Regent Theatre in Queen Street, built in 1929, was the first and only American-style picture palace, reflecting the opulence and grandeur of the great Hollywood era.

Sadly it was dismantled in 1979, although a ‘save the theatre’ campaign saw a large portion of the interior decorations incorporated into the Regent cinemas. The marble staircase and vaulted ceilings of the entrance hall, grand foyer and mezzanine foyer were saved.

But the Regent outlived its famous Wurlitzer organ by 15 years, which brings us to the 50th celebration of the formation of the Theatre Organ Society of Australia (Queensland division), which was formed in Brisbane in 1964.

A group of cinema organ enthusiasts saw the removal of the Regent Theatre’s Wurlitzer organ as a catalyst for establishing a music society, with the aim to one day have their own theatre organ in Brisbane for members and the public to enjoy.

That dream was fulfilled in 1975 with the grand opening of the Christie theatre pipe organ at Kelvin Grove State High School auditorium with Australian organist Tony Fenelon at the console.

To mark this anniversary occasion, the society is planning a weekend of celebratory events from August 29 to 31, based at the Kelvin Grove College.

But on the Sunday afternoon the event everyone has been waiting for arrives. Tony Fenelon OAM returns to perform

the closing concert for the weekend on the organ he opened in 1975.

Renowned worldwide as Australia’s greatest theatre organist and also as an international-class concert pianist, Tony will perform all the favourites from light classics to Broadway and beyond at the incredible Christie cinema pipe organ.

Even though Tony’s main musical instrument is classical piano, it hasn’t stopped the multi-instrumentalist from mastering the theatre organ. For more than half a century he has travelled the world, receiving rave accolades along the way.

Tony Fenelon tells us that when he heard the sound of the theatre organ for the first time, he was immediately drawn to it.

“My dad took me to the Regent Theatre in Melbourne and I remember the overwhelming sound of the theatre organ,” he said.

“The theatre itself had the most magnificent acoustic and there was this allenveloping sound. It was very spectacular and it grabbed me at that very young age.”

The theatre organ, also known as the cinema organ, was originally designed for imitation of an orchestra. During its heyday, the instrument was installed in cinemas to accompany silent films.

But Tony Fenelon says there has been a rebirth of the theatre organ.

“There were a lot of organs that were disused in theatres in the 60s and so the organ enthusiasts started forming societies,” he said.

“All these organs have now been refurbished and reinstalled in new localities and are now seen in a totally different light.

“The instrument is pretty well an orchestra in its own right.”

The public is invited to attend all of the events.

RSL Care Fairview celebrates residents’ special achievement ON 17 July, Fairview Retirement Village held their inaugural Christmas in July lunch. The event was also a chance to celebrate and recognise the wonderful contributions of Shirley Waldron, a former Fairview Retirement Village resident who has now moved to Fairview’s Residential Community.

An avid book reader, Shirley took it upon herself to build up the village’s library, which originally consisted of two shelves.

Retirement Village Co-ordinator Kathy Cook said it was fabulous to see the way residents had embraced the library.

“Through Shirley’s commitment and dedication, the library now takes pride of place in our community hall, thanks to book donations from the community and to the Dinner Committee for providing additional funds for the purchase of new books,” Kathy said.

“Not only did Shirley set up the alphabetic filing system in the library, she also created and maintained the village’s historical information through the implementation of a book and photo album, recording all past and present residents living within the community, as well as the site’s history.”

At the event Shirley was presented with flowers and a certificate of appreciation stating that she was “very surprised and chuffed” with the honour.

Kathy believes that by embracing her passion, Shirley has helped to create a special space for all residents.

Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club ON a crisp and clear August morning, members from the Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club headed off to Redcliffe.

Our first stop was Woody Point for a delicious morning tea. Following morning tea, the majority of members headed off to Redcliffe to explore the Bee Gees Walk of Fame and some retail therapy. After shopping, it was back to Woody Point for a wonderful picnic lunch which was eagerly devoured by all. The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club Inc. is a local community based organization that was formed over Twenty Years ago for people in the over 50 age group living in Forest Lake and surrounding suburbs. Mitchelton & Districts celebrates 50 years THE Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club Inc. will not be holding a meeting on the first Thursday in October at the Enoggera Memorial Hall. This club will have its 50th anniversary in October.

After pruning, be sure to fertilise the area around the shrub but not close to its trunk. Also, check Citrus trees for new shoots below the graft line. community news Significant increase in demand for help by Apple device users BRISBANE Seniors Online (BSOL) has experienced a significant increase in the number of seniors and over 50s who have acquired Apple devices and now require some assistance with using these devices including Mac, iPads and iPhones. With the increased popularity and affordability of Apple products and the portability of some of the devices, there has been an increased demand for the services of BSOL mentors (tutors) across many areas of Brisbane. Whilst Apple mentors are sought, mentors who can teach Windows (up to 8.1), tablets and Androids are always welcome to join the ranks of the hundreds of volunteers in BSOL. Of course, new

learners are always welcome. However without these valued unpaid volunteers, this service to the seniors and over 50s community cannot exist.

Why not tell your friends, neighbours and relatives about the service BSOL offers? What BSOL offers is quite unique in that lessons are normally carried out in the learners own home on their own computer and at a pace that suits them. Tuition on a one-on-one basis is more conducive to learning. Computers and internet technology have now become an essential part of our lives.

Mentors do not need to be experts. They just need to have some degree of confidence to teach and be empathetic and patient. There is no cost

to join as a volunteer mentor and throughout the year, regular advanced training and support groups operate and these are available at no cost to the mentor. Professional speakers are available to talk and make presentations to community groups and social clubs about computer and internet use and how BSOL can benefit new and existing computer users. There is no cost to have a speaker from BSOL attend. A number of special interest groups operate within BSOL and these include beginners and advance Apple users; Digital Photography (sessions as well as photographic excursions); Video photography and a Mentor Support Group.

U3A Brisbane Winter School another great success JULY saw another successful Winter School conducted by U3A Brisbane and this year it was bigger and better than ever. Not only were all the regular speakers in attendance but this year the keynote address was taken to a whole new level with the venue being the magnificent auditorium at the State Library of Queensland and the speaker, Emeritus Professor Roly Sussex, the renowned expert on languages and popular ABC presenter.

To launch winter school, Roly enthralled the capacity audience of over 260 with his many stories of how languages were created over the centuries and how one language can have a profound effect on another. Roly is fluent in 6 languages and is proficient in at least another 5 so he is well qualified to talk on this intriguing subject.

The duration of the winter school week was also extremely successful with

One of the highlights of the week was the session conducted by Sean Dorney, the long-time ABC correspondent based in PNG and the Pacific Islands, with great stories of his experiences over a 40 year period in that role. Sean’s presentation was so well received he has kindly agreed to present again at the 2015 event.

With the added advantage of additional space at the new Queen Street premises, far more people were able to be accommodated and shown presentations on brand new, state of the art audio visual equipment in more comfort than in the previous year; in fact the attendances were so good they were up 40% on 2013. All in all, a very successful week for what has become the premier event for U3A Brisbane and everyone involved in the organisation of this week are to be congratulated on the efficient and seamless way the event was handled. The hall has been an integral part of the Nudgee Community over the past 100 years and is currently used for gymnastics and jujitsu. Others went straight to Point Lookout. Our sight-seeing group caught a bus to the Point. We all enjoyed a nice lunch, and then went for a walk along the ocean front. WE both squinted at the sketchy photo showing two Lancaster bombers with Australian crews plummeting from the skies over Emmerich on the German-Netherlands border, both hit by enemy ground fire during the failed Operation Market Garden operation in 1944.

Above the two planes and almost hidden by the smoke, the photo also captures the image of another aircraft, still on course and heading for its bombing target.

On board was 22-year-old bomb aimer Laurie Woods of Tasmania who survived the sortie – and 35 other bombing missions over Europe in World War 2.

“If the other two aircraft had not been positioned where they were, we would have copped a direct hit,” said the spry 91-year-old.

“It was so sad and heart-wrenching to see my mates, some as young as 18, disappearing below us.”

Laurie, now living at Sunnybank, was signing a trilogy of his experiences with the Australian Lancaster 460 squadron and in particular “our plane”, the Lancaster ‘K2’ Killer ND615.

It has taken Laurie Woods, DFC, more than 60 years to tell his story.

“Most of use never talked about the war, but at 91 I thought it was time to record the events before they were forgotten,” said Laurie who sat at a small table outside a newsagency at Toombul, happy to autograph and talk about his books and experiences.

That same day he had been awarded the Legion of Honour, France’s highest military medal, for his services in World War 2. It adds to his Normandy Medal and nine other citations.

Operation Market Garden was one of the worst failures of the World War 2. After victory in France, British commander Montgomery used three airborne divisions to capture a series of bridges in the German-occupied Netherlands. British tanks would then force their way along a road linking the bridges. If successful, the operation would open an invasion route into Germany.

At Arnhem, a single battalion held the northern end of the bridge against heavy attacks for three days, until their ammunition ran out and they were overrun. The rest of the 1st Airborne Division was forced into a small defensive pocket at nearby Oosterbeek. The fighting was fierce; the division went into battle over 10,000 strong, but only 2100 men avoided death or capture.

This and many other battles recorded in Laurie’s books chronicle his time as a member of the bomber command with the Royal Australian Air Force and its most distinguished heavy-bomber unit the 460 Squadron which lost 1018 air crew alone.

DURING the previous month there have been commemorations marking the outbreak of World War I on August 4, 1914; these commemorations will continue for the next four years as the major events of that war are in turn recalled, not the least being the landing at Gallipoli in 1915 Two outstanding TV series on ABC Channel 2, Anzac Girls and The war that changed us are graphic reminders of a time that now nobody alive can remember.

Sunday Sept 3 is also a day of commemoration, of the 75th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II,

an event many still do recall; in fact, took part in.

For me it is something of a personal occasion: I was baptized at around 11am on that fateful Sunday.

Here at EDHS we are situated on the edge of former vast army camps that housed many of the men and women that marched away to both these conflicts, of which now only Gallipoli Barracks remains.

Over the next few years the society will take part in, and will in fact organise commemorative events, using the substantial collection of photos, books and personal recollections that are part of our library.

Bus trips to other historical societies, throughout the metropolis and south east Queensland, are very much a part of our activities. Recently we went to Toowoomba, to the Milne Bay Military Museum which has displays depicting the epic defence of Milne Bay and Kokoda and saw for ourselves how uncomfortably close the potential invader came to Australia. Interestingly, New Guinea was also the scene of Australia’s first military involvement in World War I, several months before the Gallipoli landing, with the objective of occupying the former

German colony. Our collection, of not only military history but many other aspects of Enoggera and districts life over the past one hundred and sixty years is available for your perusal every Thursday from 9.30-until 1pm and on the first Saturday of each month from 1-4pm at Enoggera Memorial Hall in Trundle Street, Enoggera.

THE annual conference of Queensland Branch of National Servicemen’s Association of Australia will be held in the city of Ipswich during the weekend 19, 20 & 21 September. Part official, part social and culminating in a march through the city behind their well known pipe band on Sunday 21st, it will be an occasion for old comrades to get together, decades after being conscripted during the two periods of national service between 1951 and 1973.

‘Nashos’ served in all three arms of the ADF and many went on to serve as regulars. 210 nashos lost their lives during the Vietnam War and a further two in Borneo during the Confrontation with Indonesia in 1965. Brisbane North West branch of the Association meets on the third Sunday of each month except December at Gaythorne RSL (next September 21) at 10.15am. Visitors and prospective new members are most welcome and there is the chance to enjoy a pleasant lunch at the RSL after the meeting. We also welcome as associate members those who were conscripted in countries other than Australia.

HAEMOCHROMATOSIS, most common genetic or inherited iron disorder in Australia. It overload disorder, is the causes the body to

absorb excess iron which builds up in the organs and joints over

many years and eventually becomes toxic. Early symptoms include joint

pains, fatigue, weakness and sexual dysfunction.

If untreated it can lead to more serious and potentially fatal symptoms including diabetes, liver cancer and cirrhosis, heart failure and osteoarthritis.

Despite being so common (one in 200 have the genetic predisposition) it is not well known and is underdiagnosed. Often only the individual symptoms are treated and the underlying cause is not recognised. Tests for the condition are simple and cheap. If people are

diagnosed early and treated then haemochromatosis is no barrier to a normal healthy life. Treatment is simple, drug free and uncontroversial. Regular venesection, like giving blood at a blood bank, unloads iron. Often this can be done at the Red Cross Blood Service and the blood is useful. If you know someone in your family has haemochromatosis, or you have been feeling tired and aching for an extended period, talk to your GP about haemochromatosis.

Haemochromatosis Australia is the support, health promotion and advocacy group for people with haemochromatosis and their families. The group has operated continuously for 22 years. We are a not for profit group run entirely by volunteers. We have been endorsed as a deductible gift recipient by the ATO and are registered as a charity. though sad at times to see just how bad the drought really is out there. The country folk were very hospitable. One such man gave us a marvellous tour of his 48,000 acre property as we slowly drove around stopping at a billabong where his wife was waiting to serve us a delicious Camp Fire morning tea. We had the privilege of giving out two cheques of $500 to two needy farmers and some knitted toys to the Royal Flying Doctors Service (RFDS).

We held our AGM on 12 August; there were a few

changes on the committee and are sure all will do their best to ensure our National Seniors enjoy great times at our meetings and coach trips. Our guest speaker at our AGM was from Scam Guard who gave us a great insight into various scams that operate for the unsuspecting. We held our tri-monthly barbecue in August, which was another great day with lots of fun and plenty to eat.

ON Wednesday Kobble Creek poet Russell Plunkett made a surprise visit to the museum to especially present a beautiful coloured plaque inscribed with a poem Russell had written called “My Land - My Home”, the recipient of this was no other then our most respected and well known Samford identify John Domrow. The poem is John’s favourite. Russell grinned as he orated “It is up to John where he hangs it, but I would suggest he place it in an area that he sits for the longest time”. Also remarking “John is such a treasure”. John was most surprised and thanked Russell with the traditional handshake. Russell Plunkett is also renowned for his puppets. On special occasions at the museum he can be observed entertaining the visitors with his exact look a like puppet, the possum. Cuddled in Russell’s arm he a a rightful favorite with all ages. At first sight you are convinced it is authentic, a second glance has you mesmerised for a moment and it is only then you are aware of the fact it is not for real. John Domrow is a regular volunteer at the museum and has been for many a year.

Join cancer fight in Cycle for Life ride

LORD Mayor Graham Quirk is encouraging residents to join the fight against cancer by registering for the Cancer Council Queensland’s Cycle for Life charity bike ride.

On Sunday, 14th September, the ride will kick-off at Musgrave Park in South Brisbane at 7am, loop around the river and along some of Brisbane’s key inner city bikeways and finish back at the start location at 10am.The event is sponsored by Brisbane City Council, providing approximately 500 CityCycles and courtesy helmets for the charity ride.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the event would raise money for Cancer Council Queensland and help spread awareness of active and healthy transport options. “All funds raised will help improve the prospects of preventing, detecting, effectively treating and surviving a cancer diagnosis in Queensland through local research,” Cr Quirk said.

“Anyone 17 years or over will ride a CityCycle in the event, with younger riders able to participate if they bring their own bike. “Riders are encouraged to stay on after the ride for a family event featuring refreshments, stalls and entertainment in Musgrave Park.”

Cr Quirk said great prizes would be on offer for participants, including a $5000 travel voucher donated by JCDecaux.

“Cycle for Life aligns with our vision for active and healthy lifestyles in Brisbane,” Cr Quirk said.

“By registering to donate, we can all help raise awareness of one of Queensland’s most serious health issues while boosting fitness in the community.”

A PRESENTATION at the Sandgate & district Historical Sociey and Museum Inc on Sunday 28th September, 2014 by Dr Jon

Coleman. Moreton Bay is internationally important for its shorebirds which visit in the summer from destinations as far away as Siberia and Alaska, but their numbers have been declining in recent years.

QWSG, a non-government volunteer organisation dedicated to the protection of shorebirds and their habitat, is a special interest group of Birds Queensland Inc whose objective is to promote the scientific study and conservation of birds by all means possible, with particular reference to the birds of Queensland.

Dr Jon Coleman will highlight the work of the Queensland Wader Study Group (QWSG) and will discuss the migration and biology of these remarkable birds focusing on leg flag sightings and recently conducted geolocator studies on the Grey-tailed tattler.

QWSG coordinates monthly counts, banding and leg-flagging, maintains Queensland wader count and banding databases. They also offer an education program including an annual wader workshop, organises identification days and provides a shorebird edu-

Rochedale/Springwood National Seniors WITH the celebration of Senior’s Week in Logan City Rochedale/Springwood National Seniors members have been extremely busy servicing many projects.

As of previous years a group of our members undertook the task of filling sample bags for Logan city Council for distribution on Logan Loves Seniors Day Tuesday August 19 with an anticipated roll up of 2,500 patrons to enjoy the many information stands and two popular concerts performed by the Beatlegs Beatles Tribute Show.

Members also serviced an information stand with sample bags highlighting the many attributes of National Seniors Australia and the benefits to be gained by joining a branch.

September’s guest speaker will be Mr Terry Green Vice-President from the National Servicemen’s Association. National Service commenced for 18 year old youths in 1951 and continued until 1972 turning green lads into well trained servicemen. THE Wesley Mission Brisbane’s art program for disadvantaged artists has recorded its biggest number of entries for the Brisbane festival exhibition in September.

More than 450 entries which will grace the walls at Brisbane City Hall during the festival.

“This is the largest response from artists in the seven years they have been involved with the festival,” festival manager Anthony Anderton said.

“Our program works with some of the most vulnerable people in our community; those living with mental health issues, disabilities and homelessness – people who aren’t given the same opportunity to exhibit their art as mainstream artists.

Weak bones,weak bladders MORE and more research is showing that incontinence and osteoporosis are closely linked, which has significant lifestyle implications for women approaching middle age and older. While there are some conditions where the link to incontinence seems logical - such as being overweight, heavy lifting orweak pelvic floor muscles -there are some where the connection is quite unexpected.

One of these is the link between osteoporosis and urinary incontinence. A 2009 Canadian study (Sran MM, 2009) found that middle-aged and older with osteoporosis had a much higher incidence of incontinence than women without osteoporosis.

The Canadian findings are supported by the work University of Newcastle researcher Associate Professor Pauline Chiarelli. Her research, which is part of a 15-year longitudinal study of more than 30,000 Australian

women, provided further evidence of the link between incontinence and osteoporosis. Dr Chiarellisaid her researchwas now focussing onthe relationship between height lossassociated with curvature of the spineand incontinence.

“It is well understood that women with osteoporosis lose height because of the spinal deformity associated with vertebral fractures the most common osteopathic female fracture.

“There is also research suggesting that curvature of the spine increases the risk of pelvic organ prolapse because of the subsequent altered positioning of the organs, muscles and bones within the abdominal cavity(Mattox TF et al, 2000),” she said.

This, Dr Chiarelli said, lends support to the theory that the altered forces pushing down from the abdomen onto the bladder as a result of the spinal deformity were implicated in incontinence.

In Dr Chiarelli’s view, women who are diagnosed with osteoporosis need to be screened for and informed about their increased risk of urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse.

“Currently an average of one osteopathic fracture takes place in Australia every eight minutes, and this is expected to more than double in seven years’

time if the trend continues,” she said.

The disease occurs when bones lose minerals such as calcium quicker than the body can replace them, leading to a loss of bone density or mass, and a higher risk of fractures. There are 1.2 million Australians, predominantly women over 55 years of age, with the condition.

Osteoporosis Australia advocates three main measures for the promotion of healthy

bones and the prevention of osteoporosis: adequate calcium intake, normal vitamin D levels (to help absorb calcium) and specific weightbearing exercises.

Support group recognises pain as a chronic disease

PERSISTENT pain is one of the greatest healthcare crises in Australia and must be given the same status as other chronic conditions.

That’s the opinion of Elizabeth Carrigan, CEO of the Australian Pain Management Association.

“Normal, regular pain is our body’s warning signal that something is wrong: it hurts so we have to take action to fix our body. But persistent, also known as chronic pain, is different,” Ms Carrigan said.

“Persistent pain is when the original injury or illness has physically healed, but the nerves are still signalling pain to the central nervous system.

It’s a bit like having a car alarm that you can’t turn off.”

Persistent pain is more common than you might think; one in five Australians have persistent pain – that’s 3.5 million people.

For Aussies aged 65 years and older, these statistics jump to one in three people.

Persistent pain is Australia’s third-most-expensive health problem, costing the country $34 billion each year.” Sadly, there is no cure for persistent pain. However, it can be managed.

Pain-management clinics provide excellent information and resources, but waiting times vary from six months in the Northern Territory to three years in South Australia.

This can feel like an eternity when you struggle through each day in constant pain.

“The best way to manage

pain is by taking ‘ownership’ of your own treatment,” Elizabeth Carrigan said.

The Australian Pain Management Association assists thousands of Australians to do just that.

APMA is a non-profit community organisation which gives people hope that with the right treatment and life skills, their pain will improve and they can start to enjoy life again.

“We endorse only evidence-based treatment – no ‘miracle cures’ or quackery – and we encourage people to work with a team of medical professionals to develop a pain-management plan,” Ms Carrigan said. “This team typically includes a GP, physiotherapist and psychologist and may include other specialists as

How-to skin check video useful for men 50 years or older A VIDEO showing men how to check their skin for melanoma and other skin cancers has proven to be useful to alert men for the importance of skin checks.

The video formed the cornerstone of a QUT-led research project which involved more than 900 Queensland men aged 50 years.Lead researcher Associate Professor Monika Janda said under the project 469 men received the video showing them how to examine their skin and encouraging them to have clinical skin checks if they notice a changing skin lesion while 461 men

received only written information about skin cancer awareness.”We found that the men receiving the video intervention once they visited a doctor were more likely to receive a whole-body skin check than those receiving only written information,” Professor Janda said. “This is a great result because men in that age group are known to be less likely to have those checks. “Overall, 69 skin cancers were diagnosed through clinical skin examinations during the seven-month study period, with a higher proportion detected

among the group receiving the video intervention.

Professor Janda, from QUT’s Institute of Health and Biomedical Intervention, said the video guided men through the self-examination process, enabling them to become familiar with their own skin so they could be alert to any changes. “The selfexamination video, which featured Australian cricketer Ian Healey, may be a useful prompt for men to ask their doctor for a clinical skin examination,” Prof Janda said.Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said re-

OUR retirement dream had arrived! Travelling Britian by car south to north staying at booked B & B’s. We drove through picture book villages with thatched-roof cottages and the typical English pub round every corner. We received a warm welcome everywhere with the exception of one unusual experience. Travelling north we arrived early in the beautiful Lakes District, and decided to spend the morning boating on Lake Windermere before enjoying a lazy lunch. Time flew and we drove through green valleys with blue lakes enjoying the countryside. In a fading light we found ourselves on a minor road unsure of our B & B location. Eventually finding our way, we knocked on the door of a very old stone farmhouse. “So sorry, we lost our way...” we started to say as a very angry faced woman confronted us with “you’re late!” in no uncertain tone. She stood aside to let us in and any further apologies were ignored. The meal was served in silence, and we retired early feeling like two naughty children! During the night we were awake listening to some strange dragging sounds past our door with low whispering. We decided not to mention this at breakfast in view of our previous day’s unacceptable tourist behaviour. Thanking our host for the comfortable accommodation, we piled into the car and set off. Looking back at the farmhouse windows I saw an unusual sight. With the curtain drawn back, a very elderly lady in a wheelchair raised a frail hand to wave ‘Goodbye’. I waved back wishing she had been part of our farm experience, but felt happy that the bond of friendship was being shared. A memorable trip to the UK ended far too soon.

There was much at steak

READER Margie Lloyd tells of her lucky escape at airport security:A few weeks ago, I went to New Zealand to a family wedding. The day before I left I had lunch in a pub with some friends. One of them found the steak rather tough and only felt like eating about half of it. Being from the generation which does not waste anything, I wrapped her left over steak in a paper serviette and popped it in my handbag to take home to my puppy.Two days after my return, from New Zealand, I was rummaging around in my handbag and found this little parcel, wrapped up in a paper serviette. As my memory is not as good as it used to be, I was very surprised to discover the piece of steak.

By then it was exactly two weeks old but surprisingly did not smell too bad at all. It ended up in the bin. The funniest part of the story was that my handbag had passed through security X-ray machines twice and had even been opened by the security officer who had singled me out for a random drug inspection. If she had discovered the little parcel, or if I had been encountered by a sniffer dog, I would have been in big trouble for importing undeclared animal products into New Zealand, or back into Australia. I’ll never know how much was at steak.

Early retirement, as a result of breast cancer and an uncertain future, saw Lorraine Wise and her husband Mike hit the road to explore this wonderful country.

Eight years later, she has recorded their grey nomad adventures in Fingers Crossed Across Australia and is raising money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation through sales of the book. Here Lorraine shares an extract from the book of their time at Kakadu National Park: Each time I visited the loo on four of the five days we spent at the northern campground, a tiny, tawny tree frog was sitting in the same spot behind the door and, of course, I always said “hi”.Those who know me well, take no notice when I talk to my veggies, the plants in the garden, or anything really.On day four the little frog was gone – oh, no! Day five, there were two backpackers chatting away in stilted English, doing stuff to their faces and hair as I went in and closed the toilet door. I don’t know, but perhaps you can imagine their reaction when they heard the mad woman who had just said good morning, also say to the toilet bowl, “Ooh, you’re back!Where have you been?”They stopped talking and there was dead silence. They were also conspicuously absent when I reappeared a tiny bit later.Me?I was very happy to see the little frog back in its special place.

Port Douglas: strictly for the birds

BY PHIL HAWKES SURE, most of us have been to Port Douglas. For many, it’s the best winter destination in Australia. And with good reason. There’s a huge range of accommodation from 5 star luxury hotels to apartments and backpacker lodges. Moreover, the food scene is probably the best in Tropical North Queensland although with Sydney prices, it has to be said. Nothing like a little indulgence once in a while.

No doubt one of the finest tables in North Queensland. The highlight of our stay was undoubtedly the “Bird Tour” with guide David. Armed with binoculars provided by the Lodge, we’re privileged to spot a multitude of feathered varieties including two Ospreys and their chick, nesting at the top of a power pole on the property…we watched in

awe as the male returned from the sea with a large fish to feed the family. Kind of inspiring! There’s also a nature walk and for us, a long beach walk was perfect to help digest an indulgent breakfast.

Monday nights are notable for the Indigenous culture program with Harold Talley, an elder of the Kuku Yalanji people, helping our understanding of the history of the Mossman region.

Port Douglas has certainly come of age. If you thought it was a top place years ago, it will delight you now.

LIKE all Grey Nomads we received countless warnings – Don’t Go to Bourke. And if you’re silly enough to go, don’t take your handbag with you or it will be snatched, etc, etc. Our tour guide book said Bourke was a charming outback town which didn’t deserve its bad reputation, so we decided to place our trust in it and not only went there, but I carried my handbag, albeit a little nervously.

As the book said, we found Bourke to be a charming spot with fascinating hints of when it was a major port on the Darling River. One of the ‘mustvisit’ spots is the cemetery with its pioneer graves. Early settlers share the dusty soil with Afghan camel drivers and reading the headstones, noting how young many of them were, you gain a little insight into the hardships they bore. Pops Orchestra returns to Caloundra THE Queensland Pops Orchestra returns to Caloundra for the second time in 2014 due to the overwhelming response to the Celtic Celebration in February.

Looking Through A Glass Onion: Up Close and Personal IN 1992, John Waters and Stewart D’Arrietta took to the small stage at the Tilbury Hotel, Woolloomooloo, Sydney with their debut production of Looking Through A Glass Onion. Geranium and Pelargonium Society Brisbane

THE Geranium and Pelargonium Society meet on the second Wednesday of the month, at the Uniting Church, Merthyr Road New Farm at 10.00 am. The speaker for September will be T and A’s nursery.
