Coffee and alcohol hit our sleeping OLDER Australians are drinking so much coffee and alcohol that it’s damaging their already-fragile sleep, a new survey has found. An examination of sleep patterns and habits by the Sleep Health Foundation revealed consumption of caffeine and alcohol increased steadily with age. As a result, people aged over 55 were waking an average of 2.5 times each night in disruptions that affected sleep quality. The findings were concerning, given older people had a more disturbed sleep, a developmental change linked to aging, said Professor David Hillman, president of the Sleep Health Foundation, Australia’s leading national advocate for sleep health. “It seems that older people are not doing themselves any favours drinking lots of alcohol and coffee”, he said. “These are mood-altering substances which have been proven to be detrimental to a good night’s sleep,” Prof Hillman said.

“I enjoyed being a celebrity for the day with reporters and cameramen surrounding me,” she said. “Being Cinderella and getting all of that attention was not something I thought I’d experience at 88 years of age. “It was awesome.” Mrs Mulligan said she would seriously consider future pantomime roles. “It depends on how good the role is,” she joked. Organiser Dian Wilson coordinated the pantomime, following the introduction of ballet classes run by Julie Fletcher earlier this year. “It’s ... a great opportunity for those staff involved to help put on a great show and show our residents how much they love working with them,” she said.

PRINCE Charming and Cinderella made an appearance at Tweed Heads South Raffles aged care centre recently. The fairytale characters were portrayed by 103year-old Gerry Harvey and 88-year-old Pat Mulligan in a pantomime for residents. Nursing staff and the local GP also joined the playacting. Tweed Theatre Company members volunteered their time and costumes to make the day possible. Mr Harvey said all the hard work had been done on his behalf in preparation for the show. “(It was) pretty easy. Everything was done for me, I just had to show up,” he said.

Giving aged more time at lights A NSW university student has begun a campaign – called Tap and Increase the Gap – to give seniors more time to cross pedestrian crossings. She said some senior pedestrians were struggling to cross traffic intersections in the current “green man” walking time. Her campaign for safety for seniors has a national focus and presently Alessi Ilieff is concentrating on New South Wales. The initiative includes implementing a Seniors Step Card that would allow seniors more walking time. “I began the campaign on September 8 this year as

part of a subject called ‘engagement’ at the University of New South Wales,” Ms Ilieff said. “I decided to do a campaign about pedestrian senior safety because it is an

extremely worthwhile issue, given our increasing aging population and the rise in pedestrian-motor vehicle fatalities in recent years. Ms Ilieff has generated a Wordpress blog, and Facebook and Twitter accounts for the campaign. “At the moment, I have no business plan or funding. However I am reaching out to officials and am getting slow responses,” she said. “I have emailed NSW Roads and Maritime, written a letter to the NSW Roads Minister Duncan Gay, have emailed popular and influential radio host Ben Fordam and been in

contact with NSW Roads Safety. “I have gained support, so far, mainly from my Facebook where I have a couple of hundred followers in only less than two months. “My next step is to continue to write, research and get in contact with important organisations who can really propel the campaign forward.” This mobility issue for seniors has been addressed in several cities overseas. Ms Ilieff says the Land Transport Authority in Singapore introduced a system called the Green Man Plus in 2009. This system allows elderly

people over 60 and disabled pedestrians between three and 13 seconds’ additional walking time at some intersections. “It is an initiative that could simply save lives,” Ms Ilieff said. Families can be an untapped source of help in dementia-patient care FAMILY members can be an untapped source of comfort and advice when a loved one with dementia is in acute care. A recent study found that families were sometimes ignored by carers and could have been used a lot better as a resource to improve the relationship between

their relative and medical and nursing staff. In interviews funded by the Dementia Collaborative Research Centre – Carers and Consumers, 30 families and 30 acute care staff were interviewed from across Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania. What emerged was that fa-

mily members’ requests for a time to speak with medical staff were often ignored, or they waited for hours – only to be told they could not be involved in discussions about the care of their family member due to privacy issues. “They rush you and push you too much … and you

Care providers to merge TWO of Australia’s largest independent, not-for-profit age care providers announced plans on October 28 to merge into a single organisation. RSL Care and RDNS provide services in the areas of home nursing and support, retirement living and residential care. RDNS board chairman Paul Montgomery said Australia’s health and age care sectors were experiencing unprecedented change. “The move to consumer-directed care, advances in technology, and the demands of an aging population are transforming the landscape in which we work,” he said. CEO Stephen Muggleton said the merger would bring significant benefits to customers, staff and the wider community.

THE region’s first seed library has been launched at Murwillumbah Library, enabling residents to borrow and share seeds to grow their own fruit and vegetables. Gardening experts and enthusiasts joined with the council, library and school representatives to mark the seed library, to be based at Murwillumbah Library. The library seeks to promote a sense of community sharing, sustainability and self-sufficiency. Richmond Tweed Regional Library branch technician Linda Bell said it was the third seed library of its kind in NSW and the first in the Northern Rivers region. “Almost all the seeds have been donated by gardening groups and other locals, for plants which are already grown successfully in this area,” she said. “The seeds can be borrowed for free and taken home – just like a library book – and come with instructions on how to plant and look after them. “People are encouraged to let some of the plants go to

MT WARNING’S dragon boat teammates are not content to paddle only the tranquil waters of the Tweed River at Murwillumbah. Their competitive spirit has taken them as far as Ravenna in Italy, where 24 of the paddlers brought home three medals from the world championships in September 2014. That put the Mt Warning Dragon Boat Club on the global rowing map. The Dragons, competing in the grand masters category for paddlers aged 50 years plus, won gold, silver and bronze in three of the four events they entered. LONG-TIME Rural Fire Service Queensland volunteer Terry Whitehead knows all too well how dangerous bushfires are. Out fighting a fire in Victoria’s Snowy Mountains, his brigade struck trouble. “I thought I was going to die that day,” Terry said. “The wind was so strong, it was blowing trees out of the ground. We survived, we were lucky – the fire went over us that quick.” As a founding member of the Guanaba Rural Fire Brigade on the Gold Coast, Terry has taken on the roles of first officer, training officer and fire warden over his 26 years of service. The retired bricklayer, at 71, is taking a back seat in the brigade but stays active. In October, Guanaba members were called to their first fire of the season (which starts in August). “(About) 99.9% of fires are started by human beings,” Terry said. “People do silly things. In Guanaba, we’ve tried to educate people and teach them what to do. “We’ve got a big area to look after, from Tamborine and Eagle Heights

Walter, 92, says he is a lucky survivor and carries memories of mates lost at sea

How the choice of a vessel ride home defied the enemy By JIM BOWDEN

I think of my mates who drowned.

A LUCKY – and later heart-wrenching – decision not to board the doomed British troopship SS Ceramic in Liverpool on a winter’s day in 1942 as it prepared to travel across the North Atlantic to Australia, has haunted the mind of merchant seaman Walter Backhouse. “I still think of my mates who drowned in a frozen sea after a German U-boat fired four torpedoes into the ship’s hull and engine room at midnight on December 6,” lamented the veteran Second World War merchant seaman. He had taken the option to

– Walter Backhouse

remain on the RMS Queen Mary, while his mates chose to head for Australia on the Ceramic. The memories flooded back when the 92-year-old received the Atlantic Star Medal, one of the most prestigious merchant naval awards, at a special ceremony in Tweed Heads last month. The medal recognises his service in the Battle of the Atlantic, the longest continuous military campaign in the Second

World War (1939-45). The medal was presented at a meeting of the South East Queensland Vindicatrix and Merchant Navy Mariners Association at Twin Towns Services Club. Walter recalled there was only one survivor when the Ceramic went down with a loss of 655 lives – military personnel, nurses, doctors and civilians, including women and children. Recalling the tragedy, Walter said that it had again brought focus to the many thousands of merchant seafarers and their passengers killed aboard convoy vessels – “steel coffins” – in both world wars. Walter joined the Mer-

Aged 18, he trained as an able seaman but not before spending many weeks peeling potatoes below decks; a task many in the merchant navy would recall. His first trip saw the transport of the Australian 8th and 9th divisions to Port

Walter was on the Queen Mary in December 1942 when she carried more than 16,000 American soldiers from New York to Scotland, a standing record for the most passengers ever transported on one vessel. Today, Walter enjoys life at his Banora Point home and

mixing with his mates at the local RSL club. He lost his wife Marie six years ago and says he still misses her dreadfully. They met at a dance at Sydney’s Paddington Town Hall when he returned home from war service. “She was beautiful,” Walter said. “My daughter visits me often from Sydney. She’s the image of Marie.” Walter also has a son and two grandchildren living in the Tweed area. “We’re all one happy family ...”

Ours comes out in July.” Researcher Sue Mills said Wattle Day was a uniquely Australian event. “Such a simple thing meant so much to folks,” she said. “It was a very patriotic day for children in schools. “They would have assembly, the flag would go up, they’d sing the anthem and The Wattle Song.”

SHELBY police in North Carolina are renewing their efforts to enrol more senior residents into their “Are You OK?” program. It’s an automated system that calls senior residents who live alone or have disabilities between the hours of 7-9am. Warner Cable News reports if the calls go unanswered or if they get busy signals three times in a row, the police department will contact a family member or neighbour. If those designated contacts don’t know why the person isn’t picking up, police can check on them. “This is one that is near and dear to our hearts, because it does reach people and help people who may not have finances to get other programs or pay for programs,” said Shelby PD supervisor Amy Fredell. She said about 35 people had been enrolled, and they

Tweed Heads Historical Society members, however, chose to celebrate the national day on September 1, after doing a bit of research on the subject. All Things Legal?

Hard yakka’s key to Doug’s big win

BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE... It seems that the methods of selling products have not changed much in the past 20 years. Those of us who are old enough to remember will recall the advertisements offering to sell various products with the inevitable “but wait there’s more”. It was very popular to throw in a set of steak knives as an inducement to buy the usually “cheap” product on your TV. Although the advertising methods have become more sophisticated, the advertisers have not restricted their inducements to steak knives. Indeed, recent advertisements selling funeral plans have “thrown in” free Will kits as an inducement for people to take out a policy for funeral expenses.

ANY keen gardener knows that a plant-based pastime can be hard yakka. Worongary retiree Doug Ferguson won an award for exactly that in the DJ Stringer Community Garden Competition 2015, Gold Coast, Tweed region. As well as putting in a fair bit of hard yakka, Doug also chose yukka plants to dress up the terraces in his garden. Most of his sloping twoacre property is terraced. Yukkas take pride of place, together with an avenue of lilly pillies, cacti and climbing passionfruit. Doug grows natives that are drought-tolerant. The terraces were empty when he bought the property three years ago. “It fell into place as I went along,” he said. “You’ve got to have the right structure in place, including quality soil and thick mulch, and that will reduce weeds, and have the

We have no argument with people taking out cover for their funeral, but we do have an issue with offering “free Will kits” as part of the sales process for a funeral plan. A Will is a very important and serious document that requires careful consideration and must be drafted and signed in a certain way in order for it to be “legal”. Although there have been recent decisions of the Courts verifying Wills that have been done on iPhones, videos and other unusual modes, the fact remains that in Australia, there are minimum legal requirements for a Will to be accepted as “legal”. Briefly, those requirements are as follows:• It should revoke all previous Wills; • It should appoint a personal representative or executor; • It should accurately set out the assets of the deceased and to whom the estate is to be left; • If applicable, it should make alternative provisions in case intended beneficiaries predecease the Will maker; • The Will needs to be in legible writing or typeface. It should be properly signed by the Will maker and witnessed by two adult witnesses who are not beneficiaries in the Will; • There are also technical requirements in relation to how and when the Will is signed in the presence of the witnesses. Although these may seem like fairly standard requirements that most people should be able to comply with, unfortunately there is a very high percentage of “DIY Wills” that are rendered invalid due to them not complying with these basic requirements. You could find that the “DIY Will” is completely invalid and the Court will approve a previous Will done by the deceased. Alternatively, they may die “intestate” which could even result in the estate passing to the Government.

ville and Murwillumbah. Judges described Doug’s garden as “nicely planned”. “There was a great selection of planting to enhance the design of the garden,” they said. “The design was mindful about getting from one area of the garden to another, with paths and walkways, which complemented the garden areas. “As the plants mature, the upkeep of the garden will be less, which is clever gardening.”

Where the living is easy

The lesson from this is to make sure that you consult a lawyer experienced in this area to have your Will properly drafted. This will potentially save your family tens of thousands of dollars and ensure that your estate is properly left to your intended beneficiaries.

garden irrigated. “That’s the key to the whole thing. “Drought-tolerant plants are easy to look after. “I’ve never used fertiliser – it’s costly to use. I like things to be neat and tidy. It’s a bit of an obsession, I suppose. It keeps your mind active.” The resident wallabies nibbled on several dozen plants before Doug worked out what they wouldn’t eat. Forty gardeners entered, from Worongary to Potts-

There are also cases where “ DIY Wills” are so difficult to understand that the assistance of a Court is required to make sure that the proper interpretation of the Will is followed.

When age is all in your mind

Seniors are dipping into their super to give the kids a home

IF YOU want to be happy in your retirement years, the advice from Forbes Business Magazine is: don’t retire – at least not in the traditional sense. The magazine’s lifestyle writers say that among the men and women they know who have reached that elusive finish line, those who spent extensive periods of time puttering around on

THE surge in house prices is forcing about 15% of retirees – one in seven – to dip into their superannuation funds to help their children buy their first home, according to a survey by superannuation fund REST Industry Super. The survey of 1000 working Australians aged 50 and over found that nearly three-quarters planned to help out their adult children financially, by drawing down from their superannuation balances. Of these, more than a fifth (21%) said they would draw down on their super to help their children pay a deposit on their first home. An even higher proportion – nearly a third of retirees – said any inheritance they received would be passed on to their children to help them get on to the property ladder, given the recent surges in house values. In ten years, property prices have risen 57%; leaving many sidelined.

Older folks learning to code

MANY young people – and those well into their eighties – are learning to code. Coding is what drives computer applications from websites to games, from refrigerators to jet fighters. And demand for coders continues to grow as more and more day-to-day activities rely on algorithms to function. The coding community numbers hundreds of millions yet you would be lucky to find more than a token number of schools in Australia that teach it or perhaps even know about it. I plan to change that in my voluntary capacity ... and I

invite seniors to join in. If you have an interest and believe you can participate, I would like to hear from you. I show kids how to code using a fantastic free online application such as Scratch. Today there are millions of Scratch users around the world ranging in age from six to 86 (and probably older). Scratch is a great first step on the coding journey but it also trains the brain in ways purpose-built applications only dream about. You can start playing with Scratch by simply going to the website at http:// scratch.mit.edu and selecting create. By logging in,

you can immediately join the Scratch community. There is a growing demand for facilitators as well, so if you would like to lend your expertise then please get in touch and I will organise classes to give you the necessary skills or lead you to a group in your area doing something similar. Please feel free to visit my website http://codingaustralia.com where there are links and lots of free resources. And please send me an email via the icon in the footer if you would like to know more.

AMA welcomes age care’s return to health portfolio THE Australian Medical Association welcomes the Federal Government’s decision to return responsibility for aged care to the health portfolio. Aged care has been missing the public and political focus it deserves in recent times. It is vital that the health needs of older Australians are considered as a key component of the broader health policy debate, and it is fitting that aged care is back with the Health Minister. Caring for older Australians, whether they live in residential aged care or independently in their own homes, is an integral part of medical practice. Most older Australians have longstanding relationships with their GP, who is best placed to determine which services will work best for their patient. Early medical assessment is critical in ensuring that older Australians receive the appropriate support to maintain their level of independence before their so-

cial and health situation deteriorates. Including the clinical opinion of a patient’s usual treating doctor in the assessment of their care needs, and formulating the care package, should be normal practice. It is currently an optional extra. We also need to see improved processes to allow doctors to manage the provision of straightforward care, such as wound care,

for older people still living in their own homes. The aged care sector must be able to provide the level and quality of medical, nursing, and allied health services required to meet the needs of our aging population. The AMA looks forward to engaging with Health Minister Sussan Ley on aged care policy priorities. – AMA president, Professor Brian Owler.

THE rate at which your Age Pension is paid depends on a number of factors: whether you qualify for a full or part age pension, your level of income and assets and whether you earn money which can be considered exempt under the Work Bonus Scheme. I AM frustrated with property developers building large houses and not considering people who want or need to downsize. I have a three-bedroom house and want to downsize to a oneor two-bedroom home with a little garden for a decent price; not for the same cost as my current home. The over 50s developments have either three bedroom or two with study or one bedroom and no garden to look after. One of these developments had one-bedroom homes with garden but the washing machine was in the lounge room; I assume in a cupboard, but that wouldn’t stop the noise of the machine. I have heard of small houses overseas and other states but not in Queensland. Secondly, I am disappointed that no discount is given to those on a senior’s card, for water or rates. My power company, public transport, motor vehicle registration etc. give discounts so why can’t the council and water supplier?

Peace of mind, protection with travel insurance NOBODY wants to think about the things that could go wrong during a holiday, but these things can and do happen. Whether you’re going around the world or Australia, organising travel insurance is an essential part of preparing for your trip. Travel cover exists to protect the investment in your journey and ensure you don’t lose out, and get medical help, if things go wrong. Many people will return from a holiday with stories about getting lost, language barriers or other minor challenges. But, if things take a turn for the worse, it is important to have financial support behind you. Accidents can happen to anyone, and medical costs overseas can reach hundreds or thousands of dollars. If you are uninsured, you (or your family) can be responsible for covering medical or other

National Seniors Insurance has partnered with Cerberus to provide affordable insurance costs from unexpected incidents or accidents. The Australian Government won’t pay for your medical evacuation to Australia and may not pay for medical treatment overseas. So, travellers without travel insurance can be personally liable for covering any medical and associated costs they incur. The best time to buy insurance is as soon as you have booked or finalised your holiday so you can benefit from cancellation cover and claim back any prepaid costs if you need to cancel your

trip prior to departing. If you put this off until right before your trip, you won’t be able to take advantage of this cover – and you could lose any non-refundable costs paid. National Seniors Insurance has partnered with the experts at Cerberus to provide affordable travel insurance that has been specially designed for the over 50s, underwritten by certain underwriters at Lloyd’s. We cover a range of pre-existing medical conditions and offer phone or online medical assessment. Our cover includes financial support for a range of incidents, including lost luggage, emergency medical and dental expenses overseas, as well as the provision of extra flights in the case of a delay or emergency. IF YOU know someone or a loved one who is suffering from poor prostate health, you’re not alone, it’s a common problem and help is available. The prostate is a walnutsized gland that wraps around the urethra at the point of the bladder. Prostate gland enlargement can be caused by prostate cancer, but 80% of the time it is attributable to benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). As men age, the prostate gland increases in size, making BPH one of the most common age-related conditions in men. The enlarged gland puts pressure on the urethra, acting like a partial clamp and thus causing numerous urinary symptoms. BPH affects more than 50% of Australian men in their sixties and 90% of men above the age of seventy. How Magnus Shield® Helps The Prostate Magnus Shield® is an extract created from the pollen (the male seeds that enable flowering plants to reproduce) of various plants, including rye grass.

Magnus Shield® has antiinflammatory properties which decreases swelling and improves urine flow. Magnus Shield also works on the urinary tract by relaxing the smooth muscle tone of the urethra, thus improving urine flow, increasing bladder muscle contraction to push the urine out, and relaxing the sphincter muscles, which help hold the urine in the

Safe and non-allergenic Magnus Shield® is safe and well tolerated. bladder. Research Validates Magnus Shield’s® Effects. A number of impressive trials conducted have concluded that Magnus Shield® has a beneficial effect in the management of BPH. In a double-blind, placebocontrolled study, 60 men

suffering from BPH were treated with Magnus Shield® or placebo for six months. Nocturia (frequent urination at nighttime) was improved or eliminated in 60% of the patients treated with Magnus Shield® compared to 30% of the patients treated with placebo. In addition, 57% of patients treated with Magnus Shield® showed improvement in bladder emptying compared to only 10% in the placebo group. Residual urine volume and prostate gland size also decreased significantly in the patients receiving Magnus Shield®. Safe and non-allergenic Magnus Shield® is safe and well tolerated. No adverse reactions to its use have been reported. Magnus Shield® taken orally did not cause allergies in patients who are usually allergic to pollen. STEM CELL TECHNOLOGY Humans believe that ageing is inevitable – at GEN-X we disagree. NO DOUBT YOU’VE HEARD of stem cells but don’t know much about them. The rigorous debate surrounding stem cells has much to do with their proven restorative qualities evidenced in thousands of medical success stories globally. But what are they exactly? Put simply, stem cells are our body’s built-in repair system helping us to heal from injury and illness. We have about 200 different kinds of cells in our bodies that are organ specific, but stem cells are different. They’re able to change into other types of cells helping a range of organs and tissues to recover from trauma. This means that when our bone marrow releases stem cells they automatically target the damaged areas, in turn releasing growth factors to repair the tissue. For this reason stem cells are considered to be highly regenerative. In fact our own adult stem cells are the core essence to life and good health, and provide the platform for many cumulative health benefits. Did you know that from about the age of 26-27 years old the body gradually stops producing stem cells? Our body’s reserves gradually decrease, and our reduced ability to efficiently repair damaged tissue leads to aging. It’s not surprising then that medical

Stem cells are our body’s built-in repair system helping us to heal from injury and illness science today uses stem cells to enhance our general well-being with broad and proven benefits. In fact, GEN-X treatment programs are designed specifically to combat the challenges faced by reduced energy and endurance, compromised immune systems, fatigue and focus issues, poor post exercise recovery, post operative recovery, illness and injury as well as natural weight loss, muscle gain and overall health maintenance. Scientific research shows stem cell release rates from the bone marrow drops at an astonishing rate as we age. By the time we’re 65 years old, the release rate has dropped by more than 80% leaving only 20% of active stem cells circulating in the bloodstream. The good news is it’s never too late to start reversing these statistics. It’s now possible to activate our own adult stem cells with a revolutionary stem cell programme. GenX’s cutting-edge treatment programs designed by a

team of bio-chemists, scientists and health experts, provide advanced immune response, cellular repair and renewal. With a working knowledge of the unique, regenerative quality of stem cells, and with access to highly sophisticated technology, doctors today can also offer life-changing relief to patients suffering from a vast range of conditions and diseases. Using methods that stimulate adult stem cells from the bone marrow, muscle and tissue into the bloodstream, stem cells migrate to areas where they are most needed. This vital, life-sustaining process helps improve, maintain and preserve health and well-being throughout an entire lifetime. If you’d like to know and understand the benefits of stem cell treatments for your health, and improve your quality of life, give us a call today. Places are limited. At GEN-X, it is our opinion that growing older is simply a side effect of slow movements in medical science.

WE BELIEVE WE ARE LIGHT YEARS AHEAD. GEN-X offers an obligation-free consultation and we will link you with the very best Medical professionals, who know the truth about the future of medicine.

Tweed News Seniors welcome with range of activities

Tweed Valley Jazz Club not just jazz TWEED Valley Jazz Club Inc is a registered, not-for-profit, organisation. First established in 1996, the club is a centre in Murwillumbah for popular music going back to the 1920s and earlier. Live music is the number one consideration played by some of the best musicians in various bands from all around southeast Queensland and Northern NSW. Despite the name, the club is no hardcore jazz club. The music on offer every month can certainly be lively for dancers to enjoy and the range of tunes comes from great dance bands from the ‘40s such as Glen Miller through la-

ter numbers often recognised as scores from film and stage. The music is not only instrumental but showcases many talented and well known local vocalists with repertoires including some of the loveliest ballads ever written. There is no specific age range for TVJC members or visitors – suffice it to say the average age would be close to 60. A happy, friendly collection of people who share enjoyment of music that often brings back memories and gets the feet tapping even if not dancing. The club meets at Condong Bowling Club on the last Friday of each

month starting from 6.3010.30pm during NSW daylight saving time with two intervals. Meals and a bar service are available through the bowling club. There is plenty of off street parking. Annual membership is just $15 single or $25 double with admission on music nights $10 members and $15 for visitors – who are very welcome. Contact a committee member, President David Lintern (02 6679 5551), Secretary Marlene Downing (02 6664 7395) or vice-president Peter Hurcombe (02 6677 9371). www.Tweedvalley jazzclub.org email:tweed valleyjazzclub1@gmail.

HALCYON Waters Resort wins Jack Arnott Memorial Cup Lawn Bowls Championship 2015, worthy winners of the Gold Division. They defeated Sea Change in an entertaining match played at Ruby Gardens Resort. Skip, Keith Rice, led his team suffering with a broken bone in his ankle a great effort. Wendy Morrin led her triples team which added to the success on the day. Wendy won the player of the Year Award for 2015. Congratulations to the whole team. Runners up Sea Change performed well all year and I do not think it will be long before we see their name on the trophy. Sea Change will be hoping he will be available next year. The Silver Division was won by a very good team in Ruby Gardens. They won through to the final in beating Lewani Palms 2 in the semi-finals and defeated Palm Lakes Eagleby in the final, an excellent win in the Silver Division for 2015. Sea Change is hosting the 2016 Challenge which commences in April with a few changes in the format. See you on the carpet. - Winston Cartmell

AGED care decisions, whether they are for yourself, a spouse or a family member, are complex and the choices people face are far more diverse than simply stay at home or move into an aged care facility. The statistics clearly show that the majority of people who receive aged care services are not living in permanent residential aged care. Did you know there are more than 1 million people in Australia who receive aged care services and support, only around 200,000 receive care in an aged care facility. Staggeringly, the number of people expected to be receiving aged care in 2050 is estimated to be 3.5 million! While the government estimates that ½ of all women and 1/3 of men who reach the age of 65 will live in residential aged care at some time, for many people the move to residential aged care is not the first move they make to seek assistance with their care needs. There are many alternatives, and it is not uncommon for people seeking care and companionship to enter into living arrangements that are not regarded as formal aged care. For example, following the death of a partner a parent may

move in with children, or vice versa, and in doing so, perhaps unknowingly, establish a granny flat right or a life interest in the property. Similarly, the inability to maintain the family home and the social isolation that can come from the death of a spouse or reduced mobility often leads to a decision to move to an over 55’s community or retirement village. Of course if the decision is made to move to residential aged care, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the decisions become easier. The price you will pay and the way in which you pay it can impact on your pension entitlement, tax, your estate planning wishes and even the cost of care itself. Aged care choices are complex, they span a number of different legal and financial arrangements each with their own tips and traps associated with them. Like most things in life, there is no “right”, “wrong” or “best” answer that suits everybody. It will come down to an individual’s preferences. What is important is that you make informed choices, that you understand the legal and financial arrangements, what accommodation, care and services you

will be provided, when you will need move from one type of care to another, what it will cost, the impacts on your pension and other government entitlements, likely tax consequences and the effect on your estate planning wishes. All things legal: Contesting wills – it’s just not cricket THE voice of cricket and former Australian cricket captain Richie Benaud has had a claim made against his estate by his first wife and son. Most Australians would know Richie’s wife, Daphne, who has been made a household name along with her former husband, no doubt fuelled by the comedic genius of Billy Birmingham and his 12th Man recordings. However, Richie’s first wife Marcia and one of his sons have brought proceedings in the NSW Supreme Court, seeking particulars of the estate assets from wife Daphne and making a claim against the estate. They were divorced in 1967. The case follows a string of recent high-profile families where disgruntled family members have contested the will and ended up in court. Some examples: ■ The family of Mary Gaudron, former High Court judge, was recently involved in court proceedings. ■ Justice Byrne of the Supreme Court Qld contested the will of his parent in recent proceedings. ■ Ex-NSW Premier Neville Wran – his family are involved in a huge Supreme Court matter involving millions of dollars. The fact that the claims involve legal families, including judges – as well as savvy and high-profile personalities such as Richie Benaud – shows that no family is immune from these types of claims being brought by disgruntled family members. Contesting a will can happen to any family. It highlights the fact that there are problems and different situations in all types

of families and that, in many cases, the wishes of the deceased are not actually being honoured due to a variety of different reasons. These high-profile cases provide an interesting insight into the dynamics of the families and the conduct of parents and their partners and children. These very public family disputes lay open the various family secrets and expose in great detail the rela-

Contesting a will can happen to any family. tionships involved. It is sometimes overlooked by people bringing claims that the court proceedings are public documents of record and are open to the public and the media for scrutiny. The simple fact of the matter is that all families should look carefully at

their estate planning and ensure that their will is upto-date and accurately reflects their wishes in relation to how they want their assets to be distributed to their family members. Whilst it is impossible to stop people from bringing claims against the estate, with specialist assistance from estate planning lawyers, it is possible to craft a will and structure your assets so as to minimise the threat of any claim being brought by disgruntled family members. Attwood Marshall have the largest wills and estates department in the Gold Coast and Northern Rivers area and have lawyers who work exclusively in this area of law. Veterans winning the battle for better hearing FOR many Australian veterans and their loved ones, the effects of war are still taking their toll in the form of hearing loss. In fact, hearing loss is the second most common medical condition reported by Australian war veterans and war widows, with 55% reporting hearing loss as a current medical condition. Back in 1947, the government established Australian Hearing to provide services to veterans who had suffered hearing damage during the Second World War, and this service continues today for Gold Coast veterans such as Greg Duncombe of Mudgeeraba. “I joined the military when I was 15 as an apprentice in the Royal Australian Airforce,” says Greg. “I served in the air force for 24 years from 1964 to 1987,

based at Amberley, near Ipswich. In 1969 I went to Vietnam and was stationed at Phan Rang airbase. I flew in the bombing missions in Canberra aircraft. “My hearing loss came from the bombings and the aircraft noise. I think most veterans coming off aircraft would have lost some hearing over the course of their life.” Following his retirement, and some gentle encouragement from his wife, Greg had his hearing checked by Australian Hearing in Robina and was soon fitted with hearing aids. “It makes a hell of a difference! The hearing aids have taken my hearing back to the way it was years ago.” “My wife Robyn is a lot happier. I can also com-

municate better with my children and grandchildren.” “You get to the stage where you gain access to conversations again and your contact with other people is

much better. Now I can actually hear the words correctly again so I can understand and join in.” Greg has some sound advice for anyone who may be suffering with hearing problems. “It’s one of those things that should have been done years ago but as a male, it’s one of those things you don’t get help for, like your prostate. “It’s a waste not doing something about your hearing. Just taking the first step to get help is the hard part, but it’s worthwhile,” adds Greg. Australian Hearing provides free hearing checks to the community and encourages veterans and their families to find out what government funded services and devices may be available to them. MORE than 80 members and guests enjoyed a sumptuous All Pink High Tea hosted by Queensland Country Women’s Association Mermaid Beach on Wednesday, October 14. The annual event celebrated the United Nation’s International Rural Women’s Day and the Breast Cancer Network of Australia (BCNA) and proceeds were shared between the Queensland CWA Rural Crisis Fund and BCNA. A gift basket with 112 handcrafted tote bags and more than 50 turbans and tissue holders was presented to Lee Seery, a breast cancer survivor and founder of the Oxenford Bosom Buddies Breast Cancer Support Group. “It’s wonderful how generous everyone is with their time and love. When I had breast surgery I was offered a garbage bag and a pillow case for my drainage bag – these tote bags and turbans are so much more stylish and much appreciated,” said Lee Seery.

LIFELINK alarms enable seniors to remain in their own homes, independent and safe, knowing that help is available at the touch of a button. For as little as $1.05 a day, LifeLink alarms provide peace of mind for people who are living alone, at risk of falls, dementia, epilepsy, physical disability or needing post hospitalisation care. Sixty-one-year-old Hana agrees that this is a small price to pay to feel safe and secure. She said: “The first time I had to use it was when I fell over outside my back door, on the concrete….I could have been there for hours! It’s really good because the response centre operator talks to you the whole time and they ask who you want contacted.” LifeLink alarms are linked to real people at our 24/7 Response Centre and who will respond to any home emergency immediately. LifeLink alarms connect to either your home phone or mobile phone network.

Resurrection at the Cross

El Alamein Fountain, Kings Cross, or Potts Point.

I’M SURE many of you remember the “good old days” around the King’s Cross area. Growing up in Sydney, as teenagers we would occasionally ignore parental advice and drive the Morris Minor through Macleay St and Darlinghurst Rd to gawk at all the weirdo types as if they came from another planet. If we had enough money, we’d stop in at the old El Rocco, a subterranean cave where great jazz musicians like Don Burrows and George Golla performed regularly. In other words, King’s Cross was a place that most suburbanites would go for a naughty time out, “but wouldn’t want to live there”. Of course it’s all had to change. Rising inner-city property prices have seen to that. Not only has there been a big clean-up of the streets and the “undesirables”, but liquor laws now force bottle shops to close

at 10pm and there’s a 1.30am lockout from licensed premises. The early morning harddrinking crowd has moved on, to the relief of the local residents and cops, though resented by those businesses affected. It’s a transition which will re-balance the suburb considerably and move real estate prices higher still. In fact, King’s Cross is not a suburb, nor a postcode. It’s a village called Potts Point, which has a much more genteel ring to it.

naturally, price. A few years ago, five-star restaurants were thin on the ground, but now there are many contenders in the upscale eateries normally associated with The Rocks, Surry Hills, Darling Harbour and the CBD. Fortunately, there hasn’t been wholesale destruction of the heritage listed Art Deco buildings and Victorian terraces which are ripe for renovation. It’s to be hoped that strict planning regulations will allow for modernisation without ruining the character of the area. In short, Potts Point is a work in progress and while the transition may take some time, there’s a fresh new feel about the area with not only restaurants but galleries such as the Cross Art Project springing up. That’s just one example of a whole new trend which is bringing new life to one of Sydney’s most colourful areas at the crossroads. www.sydney.com www.urbanwalkabout.com www.mercure.com

Singapore offers holiday magic By ALLAN BLACKBURN

THERE are many exciting cities on this planet – New York, London, Paris and Rome to name a few. None is as vibrant, energetic and lively as Singapore. Situated at the crossroads of the East, Singapore has one of the busiest ports in the world. Its international airport rates are the very best. It has the biggest ferris wheel and one of the most unusual hotels. Its mass transit system would be difficult to beat. All of this in an island country with a population of about 5.5 million in an area of 700 square kilometres – one third the size of the Australian Capital Territory. Singapore was founded as a British trading colony in 1819 by Stamford Raffles. It joined the Malaysian Federation in 1963 but sep-

arated two years later and became independent. It has since become one of the world’s most prosperous countries. In 2015 it celebrates 50 years of independence. Many older Australians remember the dark days during the Second World War when Japanese forces controlled the island. Changi prisoner of war camp was notorious for the harsh treatment handed out to Allied and Malayan soldiers. Today, Changi is the name of Singapore’s main airport. While not among the busiest, Changi certainly takes the prize as the best. It has three passenger terminals, each with outstanding facilities. While waiting for a flight you can take a shower, work out in a gym, watch movies for free, take a free sightseeing bus ride, let the kids play in

the kid’s zone or stroll around the many duty-free shops. Access to the city is a breeze on the MRT – mass rapid transit – a train system that is efficient and easy to use as well as being extremely economical. Trains on the MRT run every few minutes. Unlike Australian train stations, access to the tracks is prevented by a barrier with doors that open automatically when the train stops. The trains are fast and clean and signs are in English. A ride from the city to Changi Airport costs less than $3. The Marina Bay Sands Hotel, built on reclaimed land near the harbour, is the world’s second most expensive building and one of the most unusual and recognisable shapes ever. It consists of three towers each with 55 storeys, capped by the Sky-

Park with 3600 views of the city. The SkyPark has restaurants, gardens, an incredible vanishing-edge pool and the world’s largest cantilever observation deck. One night will set you back around $500 for a standard room. Adjacent to the Marina Bay Sands are the Gardens by the Bay, covering over 100 hectares. The Flower Dome and Cloud Forest are two uniquely shaped

buildings housing indoor exhibits. The Supertree Grove features vertical gardens ranging in height from 25 to 50 metres shaped like trees out of the movie Avatar. An elevated walkway allows visitors to enjoy breathtaking aerial views. The Singapore Flyer is the world’s biggest ferris wheel at 165 metres tall. Its 28 airconditioned capsules take about 30 minutes for one rotation and hold up to 28

passengers. Rides start at $33 per person but you can take a high tea ride or a full dining ride complete with butler. Views from the top are excellent. Years ago, Singapore used to be a bargain-hunters paradise but today it is a more upmarket destination although good deals can still be had. With a flying time from Brisbane of about seven hours, Singapore is easily accessible.

cruises and with that comes a multitude of destinations and itineraries. The hardest part is deciding which one to take! How about meandering down the waterways of Europe stopping at medieval towns along the way, whale and bear spotting while sailing through the Inside Passage of Alaska, exploring the pristine waters of the Caribbean... the options are just endless. If you want a stress free, relaxing and fun holiday cruising is the perfect choice. The 50+ Travel Club are experts in this field, we can

match the perfect one for you, whether it be cruising majestic oceans or sailing the world’s most beautiful

rivers. Give us a call on 1300 689 461 and we can help you book an amazing holiday.

that still leaves an enormous slice of the population who feel perfectly secure when their phones are out of sight and hence take longer to reach. After all, what could an inanimate object get up to in another room? They’re hardly three-year-olds left with a packet of crayons and a clean wall. Even when I have my

phone with me, it’s most likely buried down among the glacial deposits of my handbag. By the time I delve past my wallet, hanky, keys, crossword puzzle book (to occupy me at bus stops and coffee shops), deeper, ever deeper, it’s stopped ringing. No matter where in my purse I put my phone, it immediately starts burrowing

towards the bottom. Finding it takes on all the exciting possibilities of an archaeological dig, only with a sense of urgency added. Of course, if I want to be bitter and cynical, I could claim that the shortness of one’s ringtone is all part of an evil plot to make you call back and ka-ching! that’s another few cents added to the provider’s coffers. As if!

great value for money as nearly everything is included; food, accommodation, evening entertainment and with some cruise lines even your alcoholic beverages. You only need to unpack once and your floating hotel takes you from port to port, city to city, island to island, while you enjoy the amenities on-board or blissfully unaware while you sleep. There are so many cruise options available to suit every style and budget, from large ocean and expedition cruising through to the smaller boutique river

AM I the only one or do other people find that mobile phones don’t ring long enough? They always stop just as you snatch them up. Clearly, service providers think the entire world has their phones attached by an umbilical cord and I daresay anyone under 35 years of age possibly does. But

Set your sights on better eye care. We have At The Eye Care Clinic, our eye surgeons and specialists care enough to see you as people, not just as someone with a problem. Dr. Svoboda and Dr. Lamont personally see you all the way through your procedure - right from the first visit till they are totally satisfied all is well. Nor does this high level of care mean that you are charged an arm and a leg. We actively work to keep the costs as low as possible, and provide services including cataract surgery, glaucoma, lid tumours, diabetic eyes, iritis, laser surgery, squints, dry eyes and lid malpositions. In fact those who are insured also enjoy the cost saving benefit of our No Gap Policy.

Dr Meon Lamont

What’s more, there’s no need to travel out of the local area for the actual surgery as our surgeons operate in Tweed Heads. When you want someone that takes a sight better care of both you and your health, ask for The Eye Care Clinic. You’ll see we really do care.

Fortunes have been won and lost ... but at grass roots level is one of the forgotten, unsung men who like mortar around the bricks helped to build the fabric of the canvas that has became Surfer’s Paradise. Among his contributions he had the first photogra-

on promoting and selling the infant seaside village. It was his work that set him up there among other builders. The feature that set him apart was his capacity to become the historian of Surfers Paradise. It will live long after he has gone, a legacy that future generations will reflect upon. Today that old man lies in a nursing home, largely forgotten. As a long-time resident of the Gold Coast, it angers me that a city of glitz and glamour, has failed to honour the master historian, who established many milestones in his sixty-plus years, . Yes I am angry. Through his work, through

his writing, I have hovered like a ghost as big developers have signed contracts worth millions of dollars, watching the ink dry as the document for progress were drawn. The writer takes you, and leads you through a time capsule ... a story that every Gold Coaster should read. Yet he goes unsung. Are we so materialistic, so indifferent ... well as a pensioner myself I hope to be able to give this man a reason to live ... a small computer where instead of whiling away the hours to oblivion, he can tap away on a keyboard recapturing the memories of a long life. Alexander McRobbie will turn 89 on December 9 2015. Let us pause, people of the Gold Coast, and honour this fine historian, man of the people ...lest we forget. I am calling on the Gold Coast City Council to honour our finest local historian in the twilight of his life. -Bruce Whiteside

IN A materialistic world it is easy to forget that before we came along others forged and helped forge that which we enjoy today. Materialism is reflected in much that is the Gold Coast and none more so that the jewel that is now known world-wide as Surfers Paradise. So how did the name come about? Many like myself believed that the name could be anchored to a colourful early pioneer Jim Cavill, who called a hotel he built in 1925, the Surfer’s Paradise Hotel. From this grew the myth that he, Jim was the pioneer of the sleepy seaside resort. Not so. It was a casual comment by a bystander who stood alongside a Brisbane surveyor, who standing on the sand dunes on what is now Main Beach, gazed south to Coolangatta, said: “This is a real surfer’s paradise”. The surveyor Thor Jensen, bought some land and marketed it as Surfers Paradise
