Hello readers, The Brisbane Lord Mayor’s Australia Day awards made this an interesting month to be putting together the February edition. The awards really are a great opportunity for friends, family, neighbours and mates to put up their hand and nominate someone who is usually simply known as a quiet achiever. It’s great to feel appreciated and these awards express that sentiment well. Ultimately, these people and the many other peo-
FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK ple mentioned in this edition make up the fabric of what we call ‘community’. In our busy world, where ATMs rule, recorded voices answer the phone and we can check out our own groceries without a single word to the cash register operator or where family may live interstate
or even overseas, face-toface communication takes on another level of meaning. Camaraderie, friendship, community, whatever we want to label the situations where we come together to support, work, play or chat satisfies our basic human longing for
connection with others. I also hope that this newspaper is a place where community members feel at home, where you find topics you can share with others, or are inspired to write to us with your news and views. I trust you enjoy the read. – Gail Forrer

I took the bus back to Winton with a better attitude, knowing it would be a great adventure.” Judy, who also likes bike riding, did think about joining her husband on the adventure but baulked at the idea of spending long days in the heat of the Outback. Now Karl wants to share his dream with other likeminded adventurers who want to escape the stresses of life ... “and enjoy free time under the stars”. “Seeing parts of Australia on a bicycle is one of the most rewarding travel experiences you’ll ever have,”

AUSTRALIA seemed a long way away for English bricklayer Karl Andreis and he never dreamed he would eventually ride around the vast continent on a bicycle. But the idea became more than a dream 26 years after he immigrated to Queensland in 1983 with his wife Sharon and two children – it became a 14,000 km solo adventure through coastal and outback regions in five states. Today, Karl, 64, says he never regretted the decision to ride off into the sunset in 2009, although he nearly called it off when he reached Winton, 1150 km from his Slacks Creek home in Brisbane. “I sat around a campfire and thought of Judy and feeling a little guilty I took a

community news A new role planned for school in Valley ABANDONED in December 2013, the heritage-listed Fortitude Valley State School could become a hub for specialist education in Queensland. The school on prime real estate in Brookes Street closed due to low student numbers, despite a campaign by parents and students to keep it open. Its sale by the Education Department could have reaped $50 million. But Education Minister Kate Jones says she has been involved in discussions to renew the site as an “education hub”. The chairman of the FVSS celebration committee Ray Thurlow, who was a pupil at the school from 1952 to 1955, says he has been reliably informed that the school will be retained as an education centre. A decision is expected soon on four options: an alternative education centre for disruptive students and students who struggle in standard school settings; an Education Department learning ‘hub’; a centre for leadership and professional development by teachers; or a centre for bringing teachers up to speed in mathematics and languag-

es. “Whatever the option, we are all happy that the school building will remain,” Mr Thurlow said. One of the oldest state schools in Queensland, Fortitude Valley celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2011. It opened in March 1861 at Foresters Hall on the corner of Ann and Brunswick streets, now the site of the Royal George Hotel. By 1867, and with a boost to immigrants after the arrival
of John Dunmore Lang’s free settlers on the ship Fortitude, the school had outgrown the one-room rented premises, and moved to a purpose-built building in Brookes Street. Changes evolved over the years and the present building was erected at 95 Brookes Street as a co-ed school in 1950. Like its motto – Onward Ever Onward – it seems the Fortitude Valley State School will be around for a long time yet.

A physicist and historian
Dr JG Steele an unusual combination of talent
His books are resources for later researchers, rather than historical works.
By MARION DIAMOND
VALE: John Gladstone Steele (1935-2016) JOHN Gladstone Steele was a physicist and antiquarian (his word!) who worked for many years in the physics department at the University of Queensland. John worked across two disciplines, physics and history. That was unusual even thirty years ago. In our more specialist age it is practically unheard of. John Steele’s most significant book was Aboriginal Pathways in Southeast Queensland and the Richmond River (1984). In his younger days, John was an enthusiastic bushwalker, and this book was
based on an earlier gestetnered and stapled pamphlet he produced for the University of Queensland Bushwalking Society. He wrote about Aboriginal pathways in the first instance so that his group of bushwalkers could follow them, but in doing so, he became increasingly curious about the people who had made them. I once asked him where he got his information – and he said he just asked the local Aboriginal people he met while out walking. In the 1970s and 1980s, very few people did. About the same time he published Aboriginal legends of Stradbroke Island
(1984). Bushwalking gave John a sensibility to the Australian landscape that many of us lack. In Conrad Martens in Queensland:

Bushwalking gave John a sensibility to the Australian landscape that many of us lack. the frontier travels of a colonial artist (1978), John looked at the sketchbooks and paintings of Conrad Martens, who travelled to the Moreton Bay settlement (not yet Queensland) during 1851 and 1852, to
now represent an important visual record of Aboriginal occupation. Because of John’s identification of the location of an Aboriginal camp in one of Martens’ drawings, for instance, the botanist Rod
Fensham was able to show that this place marked the northern limit of the yam daisy, a native plant with a tuberous root that was an important food source for the Aborigines – and soon to be wiped out by hungry sheep. John’s work dates from before Mabo, before Native Title, before current sensitivities about the European occupation of Australia. His books are resources for later researchers, rather than historical works in their own right. Dr Steele is also the author of The Explorers of the Moreton Bay District 1770-1830 (UQP, 1972), Brisbane Town in Convict Days 1824-1842 (UQP, 1975), Conrad Martens in Queensland (UQP, 1978) and The Brisbane River, as well as many articles in historical, scientific and religious journals For the full article by Marion Diamond, go to her blog site Historians are Past Caring: https://learnearnandreturn.wordpress.com/2016/ 01/26/john-gladstonesteele-1935-2016

Monument recognises the lives of thousands of mariners lost at sea A GROUP of veteran mariners wants to erect the first monument that recognises all merchant seamen who served in ships travelling to and from Australia since the first fleet landed at Botany Bay in 1788. “Some thousands of these seamen rest in watery graves, victims of cyclones, grounding on reefs, collisions with icebergs and destruction by bombs and torpedoes in wartime,” said Brian Hunt, chairman of a committee set with the task of raising $25,000 to erect the monument at Point Danger, a headland at Coolangatta on the Queensland-NSW border. “What’s special about this monument is that it’s a memorial for all merchant seamen of all nationalities, something that hasn’t been attempted before,” said Brian, 81, of Tweed Heads, an ex-merchant mariner
and president of the Southeast Queensland Vindicatrix and Mariners Association. The monument is to be constructed on a prime site at Point Danger overlooking the Pacific Ocean – an appropriate location named by Captain James Cook on his 1770 journey along the east coast to warn mariners of the treacherous reefs there. The Merchant Mariners Monument Committee has been granted the site by the Gold Coast City Council. Centrepiece of the monument will be a refurbished bow anchor from the steamer Alberta, wrecked when it struck Sutherland Reef off Fingal headland near the Tweed River in 1890. Local firm Neumann Constructions is restoring the anchor, free of cost, to specifications laid down by the NSW Department of Heritage and Environ-

The committee hopes to open the monument on September 3 – World Merchant Navy Day. All pledges to donate can be forwarded to the treasurer, Merchant Mariners Monument Committee, PO Box 261, Centro Mall, Tweed Heads, NSW, 2485. Committee member Jack Secker, 81, of Alexandra Hills, who served in the British Merchant Navy from 1951 to 1961 after training on TS Vindicatrix in Gloucester, England, said the group aimed to perpetuate the memory of all merchant seamen who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country. “While the inaugural meeting of our association was formed by eight Queensland-based Brits, all exVindicatrix boys, it was decided to open the association to all ex-merchant mariners,” Jack said.

Gone Are The Days of the Thunderbox! ON SHOW: Anne Brache (centre) and Ruth Francis (right) with fellow painter Vivienne Beesley at their Silk Shed Studio at Milton.
At 91, Anne always ready to ‘face’ life’s artistic challenges
By JIM BOWDEN
“EVERY face has a story to tell whether it's surprise, anger, sadness, fear or happiness,” says 91-year-old Brisbane artist Anne Brache who regularly takes to the sidewalks to capture human expressions for her paintings. This spry bright-eyed lady, who will display her work at a special exhibition at the Royal Queensland Art Society gallery on Petrie Terrace in March, says she has been an artist and art lover all her life winning awards for photography, pottery, ceramics, embroidery, wood turning and painting. Anne works at her studio in Milton twice a week and will celebrate her 92nd birthday on March 1, the opening day of the exhibi-
tion she is sharing with friend and painter Ruth Francis. “The mind and brain are very powerful tools – they can make us think we are young or old; they create ‘reality’ in a sense, because what we think determines what we can and can’t see or do,” says Anne, who enjoys life in the bustling cosmopolitan inner-city suburb of West End and says she’s too busy to be sick. Born on Guernsey Island in the English Channel, off the French coast of Normandy, Anne came to Australia as a teenager with her father and mother and brother on a 15-metre French fishing boat. “We were two years at sea, stopping off at many exciting ports on the way. We were in Tahiti when World
War 2 broke out in 1939,” she said. Anne lost her Australian husband Lance, a Duntroon army officer, in 1988. She has since filled her life with her many talents. She is an avid reader and poet and attends classes at U3A (University of the Third Age) to pass on her painting and photographic skills. Her inspiration for her paintings comes from the faces in the streets, she says. “I memorise them, or if a person lets me, I take photographs,” she said. The exhibition by Ann and Ruth Francis will be at the Royal Queensland Art Society’s gallery, 162 Petrie Terrace, from March 1 to 15. For further information call (07) 3367 1977.

Age not a good indicator
By YVONNE GARDINER
A QUEENSLAND aging expert has come out in support of older drivers and their safety record on the road. Queensland Brain Institute researcher Dr Jaqueline Liddle has pointed out that driving performance is more related to health rather than age, so there can be safe drivers at any age. Age is not a good indicator of skill, she adds. Dr Liddle’s comments follow a call from NSW Police head of traffic John Hartley for drivers over the age of 70 to “reconsider” their driving ability. Assistant Commissioner Hartley said drivers of this age were two-and-a-half times more likely than younger drivers to die in a roadside accident
in NSW. He added that senior citizens often found it difficult to stay centred in their lane, stop in time for red lights and reverse safely without running into objects. “It is these issues that put older drivers, their passengers, and other road users at great risk,” Asst Commissioner Hartley said. “Personal responsibility is the key to keeping us all safe on NSW roads. Don’t wait until you’re involved in a near-miss, or a crash, to reconsider your driving ability.” The latest figures put out by the NSW Centre for
Road Safety reveal that the number of fatalities on the road for senior citizens has spiked by 20% in the last year alone. Drivers over the age of 70 represented nearly 22% of the total fatalities in 2015, while the age bracket makes up just 11% of the population. In Queensland, a Department
❝
of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) spokesperson said older drivers were not “over-represented” in road crash statistics. Seniors aged 75 years or older, as drivers or riders, made up 12% of road crash deaths – the same as other age groups, apart from those aged 16 to 24 years

with 24% of fatalities. “Age is not a barrier to driving and many older people are perfectly capable of driving safely. However, physical and mental changes that often come with aging can affect how older people drive,” the TMR spokesperson said. “In recognition of this, since 1996 Queensland licence-holders aged 75 or older have been required to carry and drive in accordance with a current medical certificate. This requirement remains current.” Following a review of older driver safety undertaken by the TMR and the Older
Driver Safety Advisory Committee, changes were introduced on January 1, 2014, to limit the term of an older driver’s medical certificate to one year. “This requirement to have an annual medical check-up ensures any problems are detected early and managed sooner.” UQ Aging Mind Initiative co-director and clinical neuropsychologist Dr Nancy Pachana, who specialises in elder driving safety, said decades of driving research had found that older drivers were just as safe as younger adults on the CONTINUED PAGE 9
Perceived good of idea that roads would be safer without aged drivers used to SOME people have adopted the position that our roads will be safer without senior drivers. They appear to have arbitrarily selected a terminal age to our driving that rejects the existing considerations of health and ability. If
you remove any group from the road, whom you consider to be a greater than average risk, say people under 25 yrs, or perhaps the unemployed, you will no doubt include in the selected group, drivers who present a grea-

roads. “It’s ageist to state a person cannot drive just because of their age,” Dr Pachana said. “The NSW police are confusing the greater vulnerability to injury with driving skills. “Older people have increasingly frail bones and are more susceptible to motor vehicle injuries, not just as drivers, but also as passengers and pedestrians.” Seniors can use a self-assessment questionnaire on the RACQ’s website to check their current driving capability. stopped driving, often at some cost to their independence. “There are also costs and risks for older people not driving, including increased risks of depression, isolation and poorer health outcomes,” she said. The UQDrive program endorses the following tips from retired drivers, for older people considering their driving future: Start to think about your options early – while you are still driving, try out different transport options including public transport, transport services and lifts from family and friends. Have a long-term plan for your transport needs. Weigh it up – take the time to think through all the factors involved in driving, and retiring from driving. Look into your priorities
and values, and put plans into place. Think about the positives and negatives of retiring from driving. Talk to key people – talking to family, friends and health professionals might help you to consider all of your options. Other ways –it is important to stay involved in the community. This can be done by using different transport options, and taking up new roles and activities. Stay involved and active – staying active after giving up driving is important. You should keep doing the things that are important to you. To keep up an active lifestyle, some people find they need to change their routines, and others move to areas with better transport.
Senior’s concession on car registration discriminates against married couples in favour of de facto relationships MY WIFE and I are both in our late seventies, and we both run a car. Our cars are old and battered, and worth almost nothing, but they serve us well, and as we live in a ru-
ral area, they are invaluable to us. However, as we are a married couple, only one of us can claim the senior’s concession on car registration.
If we were not married, but just living together in a de facto relationship, we could both claim the concession. This seems to us to be a clear case of discrimina-
tion against married couples? We have raised this matter with our State MP, Mark Ryan, but to date have had no reply. Chris Evans

MAKING YOUR LIFE
Help make Qld age-friendly
At NEVILLE BLACK PHARMACY SUNNYbANK
THE Palaszczuk Government is encouraging Queenslanders, both young and old, to have their say on how to make Queensland a more agefriendly community. We are looking for ideas on how Queenslanders can work together to welcome and support seniors in the community, as part of a new senior’s strategy – Queensland: An Agefriendly Community. An age-friendly community encourages people of all ages to take part in community activities. It is a place where people are treated with respect, regardless of their age or ability; where they can stay in touch with the people they care about and can find appropriate support services that meet their needs. Most importantly, agefriendly communities are highly beneficial for older people who are at risk of social isolation.

The public survey, released this month, will provide direction for Queensland Government policies and programs to make sure support goes where it is needed. Feedback from the survey will also provide an agefriendly vision for every Queenslander to work towards. Queensland seniors have contributed their working lives to our state, building our economy, communities and families, and it is important that we value their contributions and knowledge. Together, we can develop practical solutions to overcome barriers that could prevent them from being
more involved. While the online survey will only take a few minutes to complete, it will make a huge difference in the formation of Government policies and programs to support seniors. We know that connecting with the community to find a shared vision will be the key in building a more agefriendly society, and I encourage all Queenslanders to jump online and get involved. To complete the survey visit www.qld.gov.au/agefriendlycommunity To share feedback, connect with others and learn more about Queensland Government initiatives, visit the Queensland Seniors Facebook page: www.facebook.com/qldseniors

COTA reaches out to ‘hidden’ elders State Govt commits $18m to help prevent problem By JIM BOWDEN
SOCIAL isolation and elder abuse are causing more and more senior citizens to become part of a growing “hidden” community. “We’re tackling this head on,” says Mark TuckerEvans, CEO of Queensland’s Council of the Ageing, who has welcomed the state government’s $18 million commitment to help prevent the problem. “The elderly are becoming a community in isolation, tucked away from society and exposed to the abuse that comes with this,” Mr Tucker-Evans said. “The money allocated by the state will help ensure those socially isolated will be supported by non-government organisations,” he said. “COTA, as the peak organisation for seniors, will work with other organisations to identify problems among the aged in their respective catchment areas.” Speaking with Seniors Newspaper, Mr TuckerEvans said COTA would
engage volunteer seniors – ambassadors – to identify and connect with people who were becoming socially isolated. Such volunteers would also be reducing their own isolation. According to Professor Andrew Beer, who headed a study by the Australian Research Council, social isolation and elder abuse have become more harmful
Age-friendly communities are inclusive and accessible environments for all ages. than not exercising and twice as harmful as obesity. “Social isolation is equivalent to the health effects of smoking 15 cigarettes a day or consuming more than six alcoholic drinks daily,” Professor Beer says. COTA Queensland has
been a strong age-friendly advocate since the World Heritage Organisation (WHO) launched its agefriendly cities and communities initiative in 2007. WHO is co-sponsoring the 13th global conference on ageing, which will be hosted by COTA Queensland at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre from June 21 to 23. “Age-friendly communities are inclusive and accessible environments for all ages,” Mr Tucker-Evans said. “This initiative recognises that the world’s population is ageing and that governments and communities need to work together to ensure that society supports communities for all ages.” Mr Tucker-Evans brought a wealth of community support knowledge to Queensland when he joined COTA in 2001. Rhymes with messages for kids
MORE than 40 years recording events in the Queensland bush has inspired Jim Bowden’s latest publishing venture – as author of the children’s book Bush Rhymes for Younger Minds. In 1958, during his early years at Queensland Country Life, he started writing a children’s column for a growing band of young
readers all over the state. His Kiddies Korner by Cousin Jim included a poem each week about bush animals – Katie Kangaroo, Percy Platypus, Elmer Emu and Bertie Bandicoot among them. They carried a special message in verse to children about the values of good health, good behaviour, a good education, respect for
family and elders and the under-privileged and those who may not have the same advantages as themselves. “This was just such a wonderful time,” Jim said. “I made friends with scores of outback kids who wrote regularly and I’m still in touch with some of them.” Jim went on to become chief of staff, production manager and associate ed-
itor at Country Life and in the 1980s established his own publishing and PR business. Still writing, Jim contributes regularly to Seniors Newspaper. Now his verses have been enlivened by the antics of a colourful collection of bush animals, wonderfully illustrated by Brisbane artist John Flitcroft.
Life is for living at
The book of rhymes is also unique in another respect – it includes an educational illustrated glossary of facts about the Australian bush creatures featured – their origins, habits and habitats. The book will support the Royal Queensland Bush Children’s Health Scheme (BUSHkids), a non-government, non-profit community organisation. Brisbane Seniors Newspaper is giving away a copy of the book to readers –

This Australia Day the Brisbane Lord Mayor's Green Heart Award ( Individual) went to Margaret Buchanan. MARGARET Buchanan was a foundation member of the Brandon Road Bushcare Group, part of Brisbane City Council’s Habitat Brisbane program, commencing more than 10 years ago. Along with her late husband Frank, Margaret started their volunteer work with the Brandon Road Bushcare Group as an activity to enjoy in their retirement. They quickly progressed to group leaders, which involved undertaking training and organising the monthly working
bees as well as preparing new sites for future working bees. Margaret has continued this hands-on work as group leader, liaising with Council to plan activities including working with environmental agencies. The group works with the community via monthly working bees and partners with the annual National Tree Day, Clean Up Australia Day and Bushcare’s Major Day Out. “It is the constant and reliable support that Margaret provides to the group that keeps the group running and able to achieve the environmental goals at the site.”– Nominator www.seniorsnews.com.au

A SMART fridge that takes pictures of your food, a robot that could be your personal butler, and a new 360-degree action video camera from Nikon. They were just some of the devices unveiled at the Consumer Electronic Shows in Las Vegas last month.. CES is attended by more than 170,000 gadget lovers each year Samsung unveiled new TVs featuring Quantum dot display and the world’s first bezel-less curved design. Its TVs include “internet of things” capability, meaning they can be used as the controller for an entire smart home. The TV’s new Smart Hub is designed to provide users with simple access to their favourite content all in one place. More than 500 streaming
and downloadable games will be available on its smart TVs with recent PlayStation additions including Assassin’s Creed III, Batman: Arkham Origins, The LEGO Movie and many more. One of the coolest looking devices unveiled by Nikon, was KeyMission 360, a wearable action camera capable of recording 360 video in 4K UHD. With an image sensor and lens combination on opposite sides of the camera, captured images are combined in-camera to create a high definition 360° image output. It is expected to be available in April. How about your own personal robot? Segway and Intel have teamed to create a hoverboard robot butler. The sci-fi device, which is a self-balancing personal transporter with a built-in interactive robot, was un-
veiled at Intel’s keynote speech. It’s not immediately clear what exactly the robot does - demonstrations showed it could use its built-in cameras to follow someone, and a pair of clip-on arms made it look a bit more robotlike, but that’s it. How about a super smart fridge? One of the most talked about products at CES2016 was Samsung’s new super smart fridge. Its centrepiece is a 21.5” Full HD LCD touchscreen, a digital command centre for the connected home. The Family Hub’s Key capabilities include: Improved Food Management. Three built-in cameras take a photo of the inside of the refrigerator every time the door is closed so consumers can always see what they have wherever they go, via their smartphone.

40 years of caring for aged, disabled
Boondall drive in memories
Retired, but still helping others
FORTY years of caring for the elderly and the disabled has ended with the retirement of Linda Rowan, administrator of the Beenleigh & District Senior Citizens Centre. Linda first became involved with senior citizens in Beenleigh in 1976 when she volunteered to deliver meals around the district with Meals on Wheels. She also found there was a need for providing transport and shopping assistance to many and she pro-
vided this as well as keeping on with Meals on Wheels. When the Senior Citizens Centre was built in 1984, Meals on Wheels and Seniors’ services moved over to new premises in Alamein Street and in 1986 Linda became the welfare officer/ administrator, a position she held until she retired in January this year. During Linda’s time, together with various management committees, the Centre has grown to become one of the largest

Centre-based day care—a first for Queensland. Linda will continue serving the Centre as honorary treasurer and she has volunteered to return to her original passion of delivering Meals on Wheels.
DO YOU remember the Boondall drive-in? One of the tragedies of modern living is the loss of the classic drive-in experience. At one stage Brisbane had six drive-in theatres operating. Now, there is just one at Yatala, and the Tivoli in Ipswich. In an effort to rekindle some past memories, a local real estate agent has teamed up with the Sandgate & District Historical Society to gather memories, recollections, images and any artefacts. Some basic facts about the Boondall Drive-In; ■ Opened February 8, 1956 ■ Located just off Sandgate Rd Boondall, near St Joseph’s Nudgee College ■ Largest screen in Australia at the time ■ Apart from movies there were Shetland pony rides for kids, play-
ground, etc. The site was also used as a Go-Kart Track ■ Snack bar and barbecue served food – you could pick your steak and a chef cooked for you on the spot ■ Two sessions per night – up to 600 patrons per session ■ The facility operated for over 30 years, closing February 28 1990. Due to the era, taking of photographs was very limited and finding images has proved quite a challenge.Through investigations by John Andrew (PLACE Nundah) & Pam Verney (Sandgate & District Historical Society) a couple of images have been sourced from a past employee, Ian Day. If any readers do have memories of the Boondall Drive In they would like to share, a Facebook page has been created; https://www.facebook.com/Boondall.DriveIn/

ONE of the myriad annoying afflictions many people experience upon entering their autumn years, is loss of hearing. My hearing is still good dare I say excellent - despite my autumn years nudging into the winter season. The same can’t be said for my old husband of 47 years. Along with hair and an alarming number of teeth, much of his hearing has departed the building. He inquired about a hearing aid, but when he told me a proper aid, no secondhand cheapie from the internet, would cost $13,000, my shriek of dismay almost destroyed what was left of the diminished hearing. “I could have a round-theworld-cruise for that price,” I screamed into his good ear. “You are so not getting a $13,000 hearing aid.” Seeing as we’d just spent $12,000 to repair two of his side teeth, he shut up quickly and there has been no more mention of a hearing aid since.
(I just shout at him louder – every bit as effective as a $13,000 device.) But here’s an interesting side to the hearing scenario. Despite my own excellent hearing (and full head of hair and gleaming set of teeth), I need the assistance of captions for movies and television shows. This is because I can’t understand the accents and mumblings of so many actors in an increasing number of movies and television programs. I sat riveted in the packed movie theatre watching The Revenant last week without understanding a single word the bad guy
...an interesting side to the hearing scenario. said. The hero, Leonardo DiCaprio didn’t say more than two sentences during the entire movie so that was a relief. His terrible cries of agony and dreadful grunts and excruciating moans were easy to follow. But the villain, the bloke who left Leonardo for dead in the snow after the bear attack, mumbled into his beard in the strong accent of a Montana fur trapping frontiersman, and I just had to assume he was talking bad stuff.
In the dark and tense silence of the movie theatre I couldn’t very well shout in the husband’s good ear to ask him if he understood the bad guy so I had to leave the movie theatre guessing. There is so much dialogue I have missed at the movies and on television because of accents. It was only recently I discovered the caption set-up on rented movies and I must say this has enhanced my viewing pleasure no end. I watched the complete series of Boardwalk Empire before this enlightening discovery and had to guess what most of the actors were saying, especially the Irish ones. As for the 1920s New York and Chicago gangsters in Boardwalk Empire, all talking out the side of their mouths...no hope. Some BBC shows are just as hard. I loved the drama Happy Valley set in Yorkshire but had to lean forward to catch the strong northern English accents. As for that wise-cracking, smart-alec, donkey in the Shriek movies, I’ve never caught one of his words. In telling you this sorry tale of hearing loss I realise I have revealed my television viewing habits, and they don’t exactly make for a cultured mix...but what can I say? Now I have discovered captioned television, the mix is set to become even more eclectic. ann.rickard@ scnews.com.au

Don’t ignore warning sign
HAVING difficulties obtaining or maintaining an erection can be a source of great frusDr Michael tration Gillman and em“Good barrassMedicine” ment for men, but did you know that they could also be signals of major underlying health problems? Around 40 per cent of men aged 50 years and over have problems with their erections and in the majority of these men, there is an underling medical problem. It is well known that men with vascular risk factor conditions such as high blood pressure, high blood sugar levels, high cholesterol levels and being overweight have an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes, but these very same risk factors are the main causes of erection problems.
So what are the early signs or symptoms of high blood pressure or high sugar or cholesterol levels? Usually none, except for the onset of erection problems. If your erections are not as strong as they were or if they are not lasting as long as they did, it may well be that you have one or more of these risk factors and are at risk of a future heart attack or stroke. You can think of your erectile function as a “barometer” of your vascular health. So here is the message: If you notice that your erectile function is deteriorating, make an appointment with your GP to get a medical check-up which will look for these vascular risk factors and treat them as needed. It may well be the very thing that prevents you from developing an early heart attack or stroke. More information can be found at www.drmichaelgillman.com

Tactics for falling asleep
STARTING on Saturday, August 13, Seniors Week 2016 will run through to Sunday, August 21 – nine days of celebrations. Last year 737 events were held from the Northern Peninsula Region to Mount Isa, Cairns to the Granite Belt. Seniors Week provides the opportunity to unite all Queenslanders to celebrate the valuable contributions seniors make in their communities. Whether as volunteers or in the workforce, seniors use their experience and knowledge as community leaders, carers, grandparents and advocates. Thanks to the tremendous efforts of many groups and countless volunteers across
the state, Seniors Week is now a major event each year. For some living in rural and remote areas, Seniors Week is the one time of year they get to catch up with current and long-lost friends. For others, Seniors Week is a way to assist in combating social isolation through the discovery of programs and activities, creating new friendships and remaining an active member of society. To continue the momentum of previous years we encourage you wherever you are in the state to support your local community organisation to plan and host a Seniors Week event this year.

Why is that most of us spend a lot more money on our car than we do on our bed?
The reality is most of us don’t even think about the impact the wrong environment can have on our body. When we sleep, our body is busy repairing and restoring cells. If our bed environment is not ideal, we can wake up feeling stiff and sore and like we’ve been running a marathon all night. There are two areas that can contribute hygiene and physical support. Hygiene is important be-
cause we shed dead skin cells and sweat constantly. This includes the eight or so hours that we are toss-

Adjustable beds that help increase circulation to our feet and reduce swelling not only feel amazing but also support our backs to alleviate our lower back muscles trying to support our body. Make-up artist reveals inner beauty By GAIL FORRER
MAKE-UP TIPS
“In fact everyone is beautiful – very beautiful – and at any age. You simply need to learn how to style your hair, apply make-up correctly for your face and skin type, and most important of all, to learn how to move with the make-up times,” Celebrity make-up artist Vivienne Somers.

and replaced with a bunch of options.” For 25 years, Vivienne Somers has worked with celebrities from all over the globe, including networks Channel 7, Channel 9, Channel 10, Fox Sports, NBC Universal, fashion shows and commercials for major car, fashion, furniture, travel and food brands. She has also worked with people who have overcome extraordinary challenges and achieved meaningful goals, yet a fresh makeover made them feel like a different person. And that sur-
prised her. “Inevitably, after their make-up was done, they would always comment how it made them feel so much better.” For a number of years, she was on hand to sweep the make-up brush across former Prime Minister John Howard’s visage. “But one time, I asked not to do the job because I was suffering from pleurisy, laryngitis, pharyngitis – the lot,” she said. “But my boss said there was no one else and I had to go. Vivienne went to the job, explaining to Mr Howard
what she was suffering from and apologising. “One thing a politician can’t get is laryngitis,” a bemused Prime Minister responded. Her make-up artistry is al-

The whites of our eyes naturally become more yellow and reddened with age and black eyeliner draws our attention to the discolouration. 4. Well-defined brows are vital for a mature face to frame and give definition to the eyes and facial features. Our eyes and brows change shape and colour with time, and we often lose the fullness of our brows. Use a home dye purchased from a chemist, for brows twice monthly, or learn to pencil in natural looking brows with an even arch. This is one of the most youthful make-up so supplemented by her training in astrology and alternative health study of Reiki. You will find more Vivieene Sommer and her make-up tips and philoso-

Our skin naturally becomes more sallow as we age and powder only makes us look more so. Replace with light textured liquid foundations with illuminators. A great youthful foundation is called Face and Body by MAC makeup. Add a small pea size amount of “Strobe Cream” also by MAC, to the Face and Body foundation, and apply with fingers massaging into the skin. The “Strobe Cream” adds illumination and a youthful glow to the skin. phy at: You Tube channel: Vivienne Somers, In The Makeup Chair https:// www.youtube.com/channel/ And website: http:// www.viviennesomers.com/

VIVIENNE Somers, 52, describes her job as bringing the inside out through a “transformative” experience. “It has the capacity to reveal your innermost beauty,” she said. Vivienne’s ideas of beauty and the mature face dip into the new age/anti-aging/ embracing aging debate. “There’s been an amazing paradigm shift. The belief system that you gave up ideas of beauty at a certain age have all but gone. “Take away all the judgements,” she declared. Vivienne recalled, for example, an old adage that bright red lipstick was not an option for a “good” girl. “Now all that’s changed
1. Often we cut our hair into a shorter style as we get older thinking it will soften the features of our face. Shorter hair doesn’t always make for a younger look, and in fact it can often make us look older! A soft longer hairstyle can often create a more youthful look and soften the features of our face. 2. Drop the brown and berry lipstick shades as we age. Replace them with softer shades of pinks and tangerines. Even if these shades don’t normally suit your skin tone they are inclined to have a more youthful effect on a more mature face and skin tone. 3. Drop the heavy eyeliner. 2016 has started much where 2015 left off with basically the same worries driving another bout of sharemarket falls. Geopolitical concerns have played a role, notably an intensification of tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran along with a claimed H bomb test in North Korea. However the main issues are uncertainty regarding the Chinese economy, with declines in the Chinese share market and currency sparking renewed concerns about the Chinese economy, not helped by some soft manufacturing data in the US. While risks remain high in the short term there are several reasons not to be too concerned. The latest fall in Chinese shares arguably tells us more about regulatory issues and fears around the share market and currency rather than much about the economy. Recent economic data out of China has been mixed rather than outright negative In addition a US recession is unlikely. We have seen none of the excesses that precede recessions – like ex-
cessive growth in private debt over investment in housing or capital goods, high inflation or a speculative bubble. There is also strong jobs data which is serving to keep consumer spending firing even though the strong $US has damped US manufacturing. Also, the combination of okay economic data in China and the US along with good Eurozone indicators lately indicate the global economy is unlikely to
The current dynamic is very different, to say the GFC... plunge into recession. The current dynamic is very different, to say the GFC, as lower oil prices and commodity prices are providing a huge boost to consumers and most businesses. Monetary policy remains ultra-easy. The Fed is very unlikely to undertake the four rate hikes it’s signalling for this year and other countries are still easing. In Australia, the latest bout
of global growth worries has its impact: ongoing commodity price weakness means ongoing pressure on our budget deficit, points to more downwards pressure on the $A, and more pressure on the RBA to cut interest rates again. To see how much you understand about investment risk, take the online ‘investing challenge’ Paul Clitheroe’s Making Money
SHAREMARKET falls have dominated the news lately, and while no one, myself included, enjoys seeing shares take a beating, it’s certainly not the first time stocks have had a horror run. And it won’t be the last. Over more than three decades in financial planning, I have seen sharemarkets tumble on quite a few occasions. However I have also seen share values recover and rally to new highs following a market low – something that doesn’t attract the same level of media attention. In fact, over the past century, the Australian sharemarket rose in value in 74 years, and fell in 26. So, statistically speaking, in any given year there is a greater likelihood shares will record a positive annual result rather than losses. Nonetheless, research by our investment watchdog ASIC, found one in 10 Australian investors lost money they couldn’t afford to lose in 2015. This doesn’t always reflect the failure of an investment but rather a failure to understand how investments work. ASIC’s study also showed that only one in three Australians understand the concept of the “risk/return trade-off”, which states that higher returns go hand
in hand with a greater risk of losing money. Almost 70% of people have little or no idea about the concept at all. If you have a direct investment in shares, it’s critical to accept that, yes, in some years your shares may fall in value. Selling those shares in a downturn will mean taking a loss – something that may be avoidable if you hold onto the stocks until markets recover. Perhaps the bigger concern is that today’s low interest rate environment coupled with jittery sharemarkets, could see some investors turn to more complex or speculative investments in the pursuit of high returns. That may be fine if you are
confident you know what’s involved. Just be aware of the risk. Ask questions and understand the true nature of risk in any investment before you do anything. To see how much you understand about investment risk, take the online “investing challenge” on ASIC’s MoneySmart website (moneysmart.gov.au). Understanding how it works doesn’t make it any more enjoyable to ride out market lows but it can bring a sense of perspective to the sharemarket action. EXCITEMENT is mounting for the home owners at Halcyon Glades as construction nears completion on the multi-million dollar recreation club and surrounding resort style facilities. Designed by award winning architects DC8 Studio, the recreation club has been nicknamed the Long House referring to a traditional multi-use building designed to foster a sense of community. Would you believe you can buy something to help you do this for less than $40? “What a bargain and what a success,” wrote Jack Kingston who bought an Aircycle exerciser for his wife’s circulation problems. “And it’s so gentle on her aching legs.” According to movement therapist Bruce Thompson, it is often the simplest of exercises, not elaborate gym equipment, which is all that is required to relieve symptoms and improve health. “The Aircycle has changed my life,” wrote Lorraine Bell. “Yesterday I

ON BOARD Nieuw Amsterdam, many passengers press the elevator button, watch the doors open, peer in, nod appreciatively and then move away. It’s not that they don’t enjoy using the ship’s elevators to speed them from deck to deck, it’s just that they like to know what day it is. You see, the square mats in the floor of Nieuw Amsterdam’s elevators have the day of the week imprinted on them, changing daily of course, and it is perhaps the only way most passengers are going to keep abreast of things...and not just us seniors either. There is so much to do on board, the days pass in a flash of activity, pleasure and fun, and well...you do tend to forget what day it is. Cruising is big time. And getting bigger. By the minute. Yoga retreat the perfect getaway Find out how your retreat can be a rewarding holiday By GAIL FORRER
“MY mother is the only person I know who has to come down from handstand, when I ask her to go shopping with me.” Therese Maguire, 63-yearold mother of three and grandmother of five and half (there’s one on the way) and tour leader, laughs as she repeats the words of her daughter. Laugh or not – it’s true. Therese, a passionate lover of life began her headstands and spiritual practice after leaving a successful and multi-coloured career path some 12 years ago. Now she wants to share all she has learned so others can enjoy similar benefits. She said her yoga makes her feel like a child again and certainly her vigour, humour and natural vivaciousness contain an age-
less quality. Besides giving lessons, she conducts retreat/holidays to various places on the planet. The retreats have a yoga foundation, but with a host of qualified teachers they also offer guidance in health, lifestyle, and holistic well-being. “And there are very gentle yoga classes for beginners,” Therese said. The master meditator and travel leader said the tour encompassed her idea of a combined retreat/holiday. “Sometimes going on holiday doesn’t leave us really refreshed. Perhaps we have too much “fun” or we have to prioritise somebody else’s needs or because we haven’t found a way to effectively unwind.” She said even with the best of intentions we can be waylaid. “We have all heard of

work/life balance, we make goals and plans but somehow we may feel as though we are drowning under the weight of incessant stresses. We even sense an erosion of our self-esteem due to self promises again not fulfilled.” So how can we make the most of our time out? The former businesswoman (who also knows about tarot cards and numerology)

said the yoga holiday/retreat is the antidote. “An effective yoga holiday/ retreat will help you re-access your truly wonderful powerful self. The ancient yogis knew how to fold time and space and miraculously this is possible for even modern day practitioners. Many of us have experienced major breakthroughs and greater peacefulness from exercise,
movement, yoga class, relaxation and meditation however we struggle with achieving lasting benefits and beneficial habits.” Therese has a life story that would resonate with many of this generation. She has successfully played the role of spouse, mother, masters student, business entrepreneur. Therese was living a big life; it was joyful, rewarding
and satisfying, but extremely stressful. She describes her desire to step away from this life as an inevitable start to her journey of self-discovery. Twelve years ago to restore her health she began to attend Buddhist retreat. “And for the last five years, I have gone on yoga holidays,” she said. Her combined experience has led her to start Taraji Journeys. “Journeys to give you the opportunity to truly connect with other like-minded people and make friendships for life.” The Yoga holidays + retreats also provide you with a safe option to travel solo. “You will find if you arrive alone you will definitely not leave alone unless that is your choice,” she said. Therese is leading a trip to Rishikesh, in Northern India in March this year. The trip encompasses the sum of her experience, knowledge and goodwill. To find out more go to: http://taraji.com.au/.

project which aims to grow enough food to feed not only the resort guests but to supply markets and hotels in Bangkok as well. In fact, the trend towards commercially sustainable and environmentally friendly pro-
ducts aligns naturally with Thai Buddhist culture and will undoubtedly grow. Visitors are encouraged to visit the farming land and learn about the crops, even sign up for some “handson” experience helping the
farmers with rice planting and other activities. Or as we did, you can simply tour the farm and sample some varieties of herbal tea (lemon grass is our favourite) and local fruits such as guava and lychees. This is what you might call an enjoyable grass-roots way to spend a day. At the resort’s Thai Village, you can take part in more than 10 arts and crafts workshops including traditional weaving, silk processing (straight from the silkworm cocoons), bamboo dancing (harder than it looks), pottery, umbrella painting, and making Thai
herbal compresses (warning: we were not allowed to bring these back into Australia). There are also daily performances showcasing Thai culture which include hilltribe dances, Thai boxing, a traditional wedding ceremony and an elephant show. These beautiful animals show how they work with logging and then enjoy spraying their mahouts (handlers) while being washed…all very amusing for the spectators! The resort’s rooms and lakeside villas are clean and comfortable, and the dining room provides a hearty

IF YOU’VE been to Bangkok in recent years, you may have been perturbed by pollution, traffic and issues such as food security. These problems are not unique to Thailand, but now there’s a family-run group doing something to tackle environmental concerns as well as keeping traditional crafts and arts alive. This is Sampran Riverside, just an hour from downtown Bangkok embracing a resort hotel, Thai Village cultural centre and 10 acres of farming land which is now being cultivated to produce organic vegetables and fruit. Real savings for our seniors - is it? ARE WE really getting what we see? This is the most common question heard from our senior travellers. The answer is simple; “Yes”. Regardless of whether you book online or with an accredited agent you are getting the best deal at the time you decide to make a purchase. How can I get a better deal from what I have already seen? This is a tricky question, as it is based on what you value the most! Do you value price over service? Do you take a risk? Do you like a better product or to wait and see what you get? Do you like it to be convenient? Do you support local businesses? If you are like many Australians who value service over price, want to know what you are getting, appreciate value for money and want to support your local family run businesses; you will definitely prefer a travel agent to look after your holiday. Nothing beats face-to-face communication..
Suraj H Arachchige, owner/manager Helloworld Ipswich City Mall talks about the value of personal customer service.
Travel agents who are professionals do not charge customers for their time, however, the same as any retaile,r they make commissions from what you purchase. This also applies to how the provider (tour company, airline or hotel) make their commissions. Travelling with fully escorted tours or cruising provide exceptional value. All-inclusive offers minimise your spending while you are on your holiday.
Contact Suraj H Arachchige, owner/manager Helloworld Ipswich City Mall on 0413 495 412. As a gesture of goodwill, every booking you make through Helloworld Capalaba or Ipswich, we will donate A$50 minimum A$1000 maximum towards your nominated charity. Give your local travel agent a go first! They are the best at what they do and can give you a real saving on your holiday.

Super senior service given by Crown Currency ADVERTORIAL
IT WAS February 2015 that Crown Currency Exchange opened in The Plaza, in Maroochydore, bringing to 11, the number of stores in the business. It’s been a great success. This success is due, in no small part, to the fact that Crown provides a great service and its rates are unmatched. Seniors can add the benefit of an even better rate on currency transactions, coupled with Crown’s famous tag line: no fees; no commission. Senior’s patronage has played the other great role in establishing the business. Crown’s business development manager, Tania Lewis, said. “In all the areas in which we operate, we’ve established wonderful relations with the local senior population. “Each has supported the other and we have many loyal customers.” Only last week, a man bought USD5000 from a currency exchange. Later, a Crown staffer was

It was pointed out to him that he will now face another conversion cost in his Asian destinations. The man looked forlorn when he was told that at Crown Currency Exchange, the consultants would have asked him about his destinations and then sold him the right currency for those countries. He would have saved a lot of money. Crown carries many exotic currencies that adventuresome travellers need in those exciting, out-ofthe-way destinations. Consultants are able to assist customers with advice as to the best curren-

Cards have a place and Crown offers the MasterCard Multi-currency Cash passport. However, rates on all cards are more expensive than cash rates. It pays to work out how best to balance cash and card amounts. You’ll find a great Crown Currency shop in the Plaza. All the consultants are ready to assist and happy to chat about your needs. So much to see in Broken Hill By ERLE LEVEY
BROKEN Hill. “Why would you want to go there?” a mate had asked. “There’s nothing to see.” Exactly. That’s why I am driving along a straight road into the morning sunshine, the salt flats and patchy grasses. Broken Hill had always held intrigue but somehow was always that little bit out of reach. Isolated yet at the heart of much of Australia’s social and economic development. It is on the way from Brisbane to Adelaide, which is more than 500km to the south-west. Yet going from Sydney, just over 1000km away to the east, you are more likely to go through Balranald and Mildura. Melbourne is 725km to the south.
Broken Hill, western NSW.
Approaching Broken Hill.
A sense of mystery surrounds the place, having been featured in a swag of movies, from the confronting 1971 drama Wake In Fright to the 1994 hit Priscilla Queen of the Desert, from the series of Mad Max movies to the recent Last Cab To Darwin with Michael Caton. Actor Chips Rafferty was born there. He starred in such films as Rats of Tobruk and in what was to be his last film, Wake In Fright. Then again, the Brushmen
of the Bush rose to fame with the art work while based at Broken Hill, so it must have something going for it. The Indian Pacific stops there on its journey across Australia. And there is all that mining. Broken Hill is the “BH” in one of the world’s largest mining companies, BHP Billiton, which started in the city. Driving through the shimmering heat, the road sign indicates to watch for kangaroos for the next 150km.
The Trades Hall, Broken Hill, western NSW. Photos: Erle Levey
The thing about having “nothing to see” is that there is so much to see. Rock formations, red soil, the way the sunlight catches in the grasses, the different shades of green in the gum trees. You think of stopping to capture the moment on camera but then say to yourself, “Oh, I will do it down the road a bit.” That’s just it. The moment has passed. The country changes. You become so aware of
the slightest variations and realise how important it can be to life out here. Way off to the north-west, you notice some ranges ... long, low, blue. Is that it? Is that why it’s called Broken Hill? Two mountain ranges broken in the middle? Watching Last Cab To Darwin, you cannot help but become fascinated by the houses of Broken Hill many of stone but also with corrugated iron walls. Driving into the city is just like the movie. The houses
are reminders of the hard lives of the miners and the harsh environment. So prosperous was Broken Hill in its heyday that architecture was centre stage. Major public and bank buildings are classic brick and stone. Nothing to see in Broken Hill? Eyes wide open and take a look ... a week in this place is barely long enough. http://www.sunshinecoastdaily.com.au/news/unravelling-the-mystery

REDLAND Performing Arts Centre is excited to commence the 2016 Musical Melodies series with; Don’t Shoot Me, I’m Only the Piano Player. A runaway success in London’s West End, at successive Edinburgh Festivals, at the Melbourne Comedy Festival and right across the USA, this is a hilarious send-up of classical music starring renowned Australian pianist, David Scheel. David is a true Australian success story and is re-
garded internationally as one of the finest solo musical comedy performers in the world. Born in Adelaide, David first tasted success in England, starring in the famous satirical News Revue in London’s West End. Following the success of the show David has become a regular on British TV and radio and toured widely to some 30 coun-

Lisa first began to notice significant changes in bone density using high-intensity progressive resistance training when working with mature-age women as part of her personal training business. She took the results to Dr Beck who determined there were grounds to implement a formal scientific study. Preliminary findings from Griffith University indicate positive effects with just two training sessions a week, which produce a greater stimulus to bone and muscle than a low-intensity exercise program and gains in stature/height measurements due to improved posture.

community news Hardly plain Jane TO DESCRIBE global identity Jane Fonda as an actress, author and activist is to tell only a fraction of the story. Her story is an everchanging one. Now in her 70s, Jane is talking about age and longevity. As always, her message is loud, clear and full of meaning. Here is a transcript from her TED talk and a review of a book I have recently read. – Gail Forrer
EXTRACT OF JANE FONDA’S TED TALK THERE have been many revolutions over the last century, but perhaps none as significant as the longevity revolution. We are living on average today 34 years longer than our great-grandparents did. Think about that. That’s an entire second adult lifetime that’s been added to our lifespan. And yet, for the most part, our culture has not come to terms with what this means. We’re still living with the old paradigm of age as an arch. That’s the metaphor, the old metaphor. You’re born, you peak at midlife and decline into decrepitude. Age as pathology.
But many people today – philosophers, artists, doctors, scientists – are taking a new look at what I call the third act, the last three decades of life. They realise this is actually a developmental stage of life with its own significance – as different from midlife as adolescence is from childhood. And they are asking – we should all be asking – how do we use this time? How do we live it successfully? What is the appropriate new metaphor for aging? I’ve spent the last year researching and writing about this subject. And I have come to find that a more appropriate meta-
phor for aging is a staircase – the upward ascension of the human spirit, bringing us into wisdom, wholeness and authenticity. Age not at all as pathology; age as potential. And guess what? This potential is not for the lucky few. It turns out, most people over 50 feel better, are less stressed, are less hostile, less anxious. We tend to see commonalities more than differences. Some of the studies even say we’re happier. I don’t want to romanticise aging. Obviously, there’s no guarantee that it can be a time of fruition and growth. Some of it is a matter of luck. Some of it, ob-
viously, is genetic. One third of it, in fact, is genetic. And there isn’t much we can do about that. But that means that two-thirds of how well we do in the third act, we can do something about. We’re all born with spirit, all of us, but sometimes it gets tamped down beneath the challenges of life, violence, abuse, neglect. Perhaps our parents suffered from depression. Perhaps they weren’t able to love us beyond how we performed in the world. Perhaps we still suffer from a psychic pain, a wound. Perhaps we feel that many of our relationships have not had closure. And so we can feel un-
finished. Perhaps the task of the third act is to finish up the task of finishing ourselves. Perhaps the central purpose of the third act is to go back and to try, if appropriate, to change our relationship to the past. If we can go back and alter our relationship, re-vision our relationship to past people and events, neural pathways can change. If we can go back and redefine ourselves and become whole, this will create a cultural shift in the world, and it will give an example to younger generations so that they can reconceive their own lifespan. that also includes herself. She explores and explains her life in three parts and she names them, in order: Gathering, Seeking and Beginning. Ultimately, she quotes the words of the Sufi poet Rumi: “The alchemy of a changing life is the only truth.” Certainly, she says: “My own life is proof that flux is often creative, enlivening”.
