What could this mixed bunch possibly have in common?

They are all included in Maria Venuti’s daily routine and they keep her

fired with energy and looking show-biz glamorous even though she has just passed her 75th birthday.

“Just write 75 once, darling,” Maria said during our fun interview.

“No need to mention it

again after that.”

So we won’t.

But sensible eating, lots of power naps, big fake eyelashes and the twice-daily slathering of moisturiser on face and décolletage keep Maria Venuti ready for the

spotlight at any time of the day.

“Darling, I can’t go past a beauty shop, especially when they have a 50% off sale,” she laughed.

“I’ve just bought five more sets of eyelashes, lots of turquoise and gold

eye shadow and more lipsticks.”

Recently I attended a forum featuring South American global expert on aging and age-friendly communities Professor Alexandre Kalache at the Queensland State Library.

He named a few things as important for joyful longevity, including lifelong learning and a sense of humour. For example he described one of his 103-year-old father-in-law’s last conversations. While he was in hospital the nurse inquired: “So you have three children.” “For now,” he replied.

This newspaper has not been around as long as Professor Kalache’s father-in-law. But we aim to have the stuff it takes to make it, including a rather cheeky sense of humour.

DURING some of the earliest chapters of Australian exploration, it was decided that a second penal colony should be established at Redcliffe in 1824 to house the most recalcitrant of Sydney’s convicts. It was moved to the site of Brisbane the following year. By 1829 there were 1000 prisoners, more than 100 of whom were women, but by 1839 only 107 convicts remained.

The penal era ended in 1842 when the Moreton Bay area was opened to free settlement, with Brisbane Town as its centre. Today, only the Windmill Tower and the Commissariat Store, both built by convict labour, still stand. The colony of Queensland was separated from New South Wales in 1859 and Brisbane, with a population of 6000, was made the capital.

It quickly underwent the first of its many booms, with more than 35,000 new settlers flocking here

Brisbane’s oldest building can claim a unique place in Australia’s history, having been the site of brutal punishment in the

convict era and used to broadcast the first television signals in the Southern Hemisphere in 1934. Built by convicts in the late 1820s, it is not just the longest-surviving convict building, but also the oldest windmill in existence in Australia.

In 1861 the mill became a signal station, and from 1866 to 1894 a gun was fired from the windmill at 1pm every day to announce the time.

‘Mr Hollywood’ takes on ambassador role Ann Rickard

HE IS Mr Hollywood to Brisbane locals, as any A-lister will tell you.

Damien Anthony Rossi is the glam man behind the social pages, the handsome bloke who loves nothing more than to get out among Brisbane events and report on what is happening around the traps.

He freely admits he is one lucky man to have such a gig.

“I love to get around and report what’s going on,” he said as he was about to take off for a family reunion holiday in Hawaii.

As if one such pleasant job wasn’t enough, Damien Anthony is also the entertainment guru on Channel 7’s The Great South East.

“I feel so fortunate,” he said. “I get to go behind the scenes to all the shows and interview cast members.

“I’m doing The Sound of Music. I love bringing all the gossip to the viewers.”

Okay, so that’s enough of the good times. But there is more.

Damien Anthony Rossi is also Ambassador for

the Noosa Long Weekend (July 15-24) and he is pinching himself to ensure the dream role really is his.

“I’ve been to the Noosa Long Weekend for the last few years and I’ve really

enjoyed myself,” he said.

“It’s such a unique, wonderful vibe. It’s a chance to be close and intimate with so much theatre, so many events.

“And Noosa is glorious in July. Last year I not only immersed myself in the event, I met amazing people.

“You not only get stimulated by the wonderful art, cultural and culinary offerings, it is socially wonderful as well.”

Being asked to be ambassador for the regional event is just one of many highlights in a rewarding career for Damien since he left his

home town of LA to settle in Australia 25 years ago.

“I was an assistant casting director in LA when I took a trip to Brisbane to visit friends in 1990,” he said. “I loved Brisbane straight away. I loved Queensland. I went back home to LA, continued working on a show I was doing and later had the opportunity come back to Brisbane and work here. Then I really fell in love with Queensland.”

Damien’s first job in Australia was not as a casting director, but as production assistant on two movies being made at the time.

“One of them was Muriel’s Wedding,” he said. “I was production assistant, running around getting coffee for Toni Colette and Rachel Griffiths.

“That was wonderful but I had no idea the movie would end up becoming such an iconic film.

“I didn’t know any of the actors at the time.

“The other film I worked on was a movie with Jason Donovan. He was really big at the time, with Neighbours.

“The movie was called Rough Diamond and it certainly was a rough

diamond. It never turned into a valuable one.

“I spend three months running Jason around. I thought his movie was going to be the big one. It went straight to video.

“And to think I thought Muriel’s Wedding would be a small art house movie.”

After those two experiences, Damien went on to run his own company in Milton, Rossi Casting Group, using his experience as a casting agent to grow the business.

In between he hosted an annual charity event,

internationally, as well as star in a number of movies, she still has what it takes to steal the limelight.

The Sicilian-born beauty with the bountiful cleavage made her first singing performance at age 17, four years after she found the joy of make-up, false eyelashes and big hair. She has never stopped performing or wearing make-up since.

Maria not only whips her audiences up to good times with enduring cabaret songs belted out in her unique sexy style, she makes them laugh and feel marvellous.

“People are always coming up to me and thanking me for making them smile,” she said.

“I love that. I get great adrenaline out of seeing people happy and smiling and saying ‘she’s just a bit crazy’. I like to create happiness.”

That she does, never caring if it involves making fun of herself.

At a performance in Noosa in a marquee on top of a hill, she arrived wearing flat shoes instead of her signature heels so she could carefully contemplate the rocky terrain leading to the marquee.

As she stumbled over rocks towards the marquee she looked up to find her entire audience in the open-sided marquee watching her.

“Daaaaaarling, I had to go into the marquee and change into my heels in front of everyone,” she said. “But it made

everyone laugh and I loved that.”

Becoming braver and less self-conscious is a benefit of ageing Maria now enjoys and wishes the same for all other seniors.

“You tend not to worry about how you look from a certain angle or if your bum looks big,” she said.

“You think ‘I am what I am’ and that is how I feel now. I think everyone should look hard in the mirror and find their own uniqueness and build on that. Everyone has something special.”

Never holding back when it comes to over-the-top outfits, always those that show off her trade-mark generous bosom, has endeared Maria to thousands of people over the years.

“I am lucky in that I have that olive oil Sicilian skin so my décolletage hasn’t wrinkled yet,” she laughed.

“I moisturise it twice a day. I do alternate between using expensive products and $6 stuff from the supermarket.

“I always wear low-cut necklines. If I wear

anything too high I feel claustrophobic. I have to let my girls out. It’s like taking a deep breath. It elevates me.”

Sequins, feathers and way too much bling are as essential to Maria as oxygen.

“I will wear black sequin pants and a sequin top out to lunch and diamante earrings in the day time,” she said.

“I like to keep it interesting, flamboyant but not garish...although I don’t mind a bit of garish.”

With non-stop invitations to perform, speak, consult or endorse, Maria never stops working.

“I go hell for leather but I realise now I should take a step back, slow down...but just a little bit.

“My secret to keeping going is to take a little nap whenever I can wherever I am.”

Maria is fortunate in that she can nod off for a few minutes in the back of a taxi which enables her to go from a celebrity breakfast on to a charity lunch and then a gala dinner in one hit.

ounce of her impressive energy to keep up with her work load and the many charities she supports, including the Jeanne Little Alzheimer’s Fund, to support her close friend and role model, Jeanne Little, another zany lady now lost to the darkness of dementia.

“Jeanne and I are great friends,” Maria said. “We used to sing and perform together. I visit her often.”

Maria’s list of celebrity friends and supporters is as big as her hair and she maintains friendships with all of them and makes new friends easily.

To celebrate her special birthday recently her daughter Bianca organised a celebrity birthday/roast attended by some of the country’s biggest A-listers.

As for retirement?

It’s a dirty word to Maria. “I will never retire,” she said.

“There is a line in the song The Party’s Over. It goes...‘take off your make-up, the party’s over, it’s all over my friend.’ I don’t believe in that. I am never taking off my make-up.”

‘Age-friendly’ society Seniors need to agitate for social change

GLOBAL aging expert Dr Alexandre Kalache tells seniors if they want to pave the way for social change, they need a voice that will: “Challenge, speak up and shape social policies.”

His advice for policymakers: “Listen to the people, they will tell you, don’t make assumptions.”

The Brazilian-born co-president of the International Longevity Centre Global Alliance and former director of the World Health Organisation global program on aging was speaking at a Queensland Governmentsponsored forum designed to inform the development of a Queensland seniors’ strategy as an “agefriendly community” – a community that prioritises and addresses the needs and aspirations of older people.

learning, income, social participation and security of food and shelter. He called Australia a land of migrants and asked for the recognition of the uniqueness of problems associated with aging in a foreign land.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Dr Kalache references his own country to define the

demands of longevity.

“Do you remember the song The Girl from Ipomea?” he asked. “Well that girl today is 76 and she is looking after her mother with Alzheimer’s.”

He asked this generation not to be selfish, but to be inclusive and imaginative. He emphasised the

importance of intergenerational activities and gender balance.

In terms of caregiving, he said: “If a society is to be sustainable, we cannot just rely on women. We must bring men into these roles.”

MINISTER’S MESSAGE CORALEE O’ROURKE THE Palaszczuk Government is one step closer to making Queensland a more age-friendly community, after receiving more than 9000 responses to a public survey that asked Queenslanders to suggest ways to welcome and support seniors in the community.

The survey highlighted many key issues, such as access to transport, employment and information technology, to help inform the new seniors strategy – “Queensland: an age-friendly community”.

An age-friendly community encourages

people of all ages to take part in community activities. It is a place where people are treated with respect, regardless of their age or ability; where they can stay in touch with the people they

Most importantly, age-friendly communities are highly beneficial for older people who are at risk of social isolation.

In March, I had the

privilege of meeting world leading authority on ageing Professor Alexandre Kalache to discuss the survey results and the new strategy.

Professor Kalache pioneered the concept of “active ageing” and developed the Global Movement on Age Friendly Cities while he was the head of the World Health Organisation’s Ageing and Life Course Program.

Now the director of the International Centre for Policies on Ageing in Brazil, Professor Kalache continues to help build a deeper appreciation within communities for the contribution and needs of older people.

I was delighted to meet with Professor Kalache to discuss how we could increase our activities to develop, implement and promote the age-friendly approach in Queensland.

JAYNE Keogh is known to so many Brisbane locals.

For more than three decades she’s been seen skipping around town in her stilettos, dark black hair always immaculately coiffed, make-up perfect, and her signature vibrant outfits announcing her arrival the minute she enters the building.

Brisbane’s PR queen in the ‘80s and ‘90s is a little more subdued now but still operating her own business - Jayne Keogh Public Relations - looking after her clients while simultaneously near to completing a Master of Museum Studies at the University of Queensland.

Jayne is proof that it is always worthwhile learning, no matter your maturity or your career experience.

Her motivation to study something new and perhaps change careers at this late stage in life came from heart-break, but she has turned sadness into joy and through learning now has a life filled with happiness and purpose.

“I had a horrific marriage break-up after a long time together,” she said. “I had been betrayed for the duration of my marriage and when I found out it was the biggest shock of my life.

Everything I held dear was shattered. My self-esteem in tatters.”

Over the years Jayne has worked on accounts promoting products, destinations, and business as varied as fresh produce to boutique wineries.

Every day I would come out of the tube just as Big Ben was chiming 9.45am and walk across Westminster Bridge, so excited that my life had changed for the better. heartache, Jayne never missed a day’s work, always putting her clients first.

“I have been in PR for more than 30 years,” she said. “I just kept going. It was all I knew to do.

“I started my career at Myer, a dream job for a serial shopper and fashionista. I hit my straps in the ‘80s and had never worked so hard in my life. I did 12 hour days for months on end. Then the recession we had to have (thank you Paul Keating)

“I could do PR in my sleep,” she said.

After she had grieved for her broken marriage and recovered her shattered self-esteem, she decided a change was called for and began researching with her typical thoroughness.

“I had always wanted to be an artist or an archaeologist, but was talked out of both by my parents who were concerned I was too sensitive for those professions,” she said.

“Now, all these years later when I wanted a change I looked for a position that was close to those two, and museums came up tops.

“It was more realistic for my stage in life.”

At an age when she could so easily have sat back and just shopped and socialised a lot more, Jayne enrolled at the University of Queensland in a three year part-time program in Master of Museum Studies. She took to it with a passion and enthusiasm that still surprises her.

“I wasn’t nervous,” she said. “I was a bit quiet in the seminars at first, and then once I got my first High Distinction for an assignment, you couldn’t shut me up.

“Studying holds no fear for me. I was well advised by a couple of the most senior people in this sector, Professor Suzanne Miller from the Queensland Museum and Dr Ian Galloway, her predecessor.”

There was no concern for Jayne that she was studying with people younger than herself.

“I had a lot of life experience,” she said. “I had travelled. I’d been to most of the important museums and art museums around the world. I understood that museums have to pay their way.”

At every chance, Jayne offered herself for work experience in museums all over the country, working for no wages on weekends and during her holidays, turning up even when she wasn’t expected, doing every job from the menial to the important, getting her hands dirty while gaining valuable hands-on experience.

“Every semester break I worked,” she said. “I have worked in London at the Florence Nightingale Museum, in Sydney at the Powerhouse and the

“Right now, a quarter of people on the Newstart job-seeking allowance are over 50 – one-third of the longterm unemployed – and despite best efforts, many of them simply can’t find employment,” he said.

“Many languish for

years on Newstart and move straight onto the age pension.

“If we need older Australians to work longer, there will need to be more sophisticated measures and incentives put in place to break down discrimination against older people and encourage employers to keep them on.”

Mr Yates said COTA welcomed the government saying it was open to alternative measures to bring the Budget back to surplus.

“We look forward to a constructive dialogue with the government on doing just that.”

IS THERE prejudice against older people applying for jobs?

That is the most common question at my seminars on how to get a job or start a business.

The answer is simple: “Absolutely! So what are you going to do about it?”

The choice is stark: keep trying for jobs but meanwhile buy or start up a business.

The alternative is an unemployment benefit, but even that is hard to retain as the government (rightly, in my view)

demands you job hunt for any job, no matter your prior experience.

Business brokers and business for sale advertisements can be found online or in local newspapers.

But beware, urges Sunshine Coast accountant, Val Smart, who tells of many a retiring senior bureaucrat asking for advice on purchasing shopfronts in glamorous areas: “You could be making a couple of bucks an hour,” he warns.

Sometimes ignoring such advice, means you

pay the penalty, and return with superannuation gone, this time to listen to advice.

Alternatively, you can set up a business. Again, arrogance can get in the way. Take cleaning as an example. Is it beneath you? If you clean a property so it is spotless, your reputation will spread. Cleaning jobs will pour in through word of mouth. You then hire cleaners, promote the business and with persistence could become a Compass or Sodexo, both major cleaning companies worth millions.

Or do people’s books.

Many tradies just like to do the trade. Do a short course, sign up for a free online accounting program.

It can be easy and hard, but being “hard” is just a thought. Simply jump the next hurdle.

Veteran pensions set to increase

Pension recipients, including veterans, their partners, war widows and widowers across Australia, started receiving the increase from March 20.

Due to pension rates calculating on a daily basis, the first pension paid after the indexation on the payday of March 31 SERVICE PENSION

involves both the old and new rates.

The new pension rates will be fully effective from the April 14 payment date.

Look back at Boggo Rd Jail EVERY Sunday morning, as Larry Campbell sits in the shadow of the building that was once his home, the memories come flooding back.

Memories of the nights he lay on his bunk trying to sleep while listening to his stomach groaning in protest as it did battle with the evening meal of reheated leftovers.

It was common practice at Boggo Road Jail for leftovers to be reheated more than once, and they were often left unrefrigerated for days, resulting in chronic stomach aches, and worse.

He also remembers the gnawing hunger.

“If you were placed in isolation for, say, being cheeky to a warder, you lost all your privileges.

Your tobacco ration was cut in half for five weeks.

The normal egg ration was one egg every five weeks, so you lost your one and only boiled egg – which

was a luxury I looked forward to,” he says.

“The prison was just a basic shelter – good for dogs and bears but not too good for human beings.”

Larry first took up residence in the jail in the late 1950s after a run in with the law over the theft of a motor vehicle he and his young friends then used in a crime spree, breaking into houses in Brisbane until the police eventually caught up with them.

“They identified me as the gang’s ring leader,” he ruefully recalls. “As such, I received the harshest sentence – four years.”

That sentence, and a string of others that kept him incarcerated for a large chunk of his life, have been graphically recounted in his first book The Real Boggo Road, the story of his life inside the Queensland prison system in the 1960s.

Now, in 2016, as he sits with friends and

supporters at the Boggo Road Sunday Markets, he puts aside some of the more appalling memories of the past and uses the time productively to promote and sell his books, which he hopes will impart a keep-out-ofjail message to any young person who may be contemplating a career in crime.

“Today I write books because I want to do something for the children of Queensland,” he says.

“There are presently a lot of kids in custody and when they get out there’s a good chance that many could fall into bad company again. Seasoned criminals often use younger criminals to do their dirty work for them.”

Anzac Day an emotional time for long-time sergeant Ann Rickard

SERGEANT Adam Hankey doesn’t mind admitting Anzac Day leaves him emotional and pondering his good fortune to be here while so many of his mates are not.

The Brisbane-based sergeant has been in the Defence Force for 25 years and although he has not seen too many horrors during that time, he has many friends who have — and have paid with their lives for it.

“It is a hard day to get through, very emotional,” he said. “Some of the guys who I served with lost their lives. They were young. It was very difficult to attend their memorial services, to see their families grieving.”

Sgt Hankey joined in the Defence Force as a 17-year-old and says it was difficult to get used to the army discipline in the beginning.

“It toughens you up,” he said. “It gets you ready.

The first three months

A three-month deployment to Timor working with the logistic team looking after headquarters was the first taste of overseas work for Sgt Hankey, then it was back home to Brisbane until another deployment in Timor.

After retiring from the army in 2009 Sgt Hankey found life “on the outside” not much to his liking.

“It was a lot harder on the outside than I thought it would be,” he said. “I maintained a connection with the army as a reservist. I knew the army lifestyle, I missed the camaraderie and made a decision to get back in.”

25 YEARS SERVICE: Sgt Hankey joined in the Defence Force as a 17-year-old.

A posting to Iraq came next.

“I spent seven months in Iraqi. It wasn’t too bad.

It was my first time in there and it took us a while to get our feet on

Our guys were pretty good as trainers.”

Hankey counts himself fortunate that even though he has a 25-year army career he has not been confronted with any real danger.

daughters have always worked around his army career. “It was hard sometimes on all of us,” he said. “I think I’ll do another 10 years in the army.”

IF I READ another popular author writing a memoir about the angst of turning 50, I’ll go bonkers. I wrote about that subject 20 years

ago. You could say I led the way.

Not that I’ve minded reading about some of my favourite authors turning 50, I’ve actually loved it. Anyway, enough of that. Turning 70. There is something about the number 7 coming before a big 0 that made me nervous for the entire year I was 69. Like you, I was sick of reading about 60 being the new 40, and

50 being the new 21 ... all that rubbish. I wanted to read about 70 being the new 30, which would have had my stamp of approval. The 70-year-old is downgraded to the unpalatable words “70 and beyond”.

The “...and beyond” bit I find quite offensive. It is as if anyone over 70 is not worthy of a full sentence, just a throw-away line “...and

beyond”.

The only thing upsetting about turning 70 for me was the complete and utter lack of recognition, let alone celebration. No way did I want a party. But I did expect some sort of acknowledgement from my family – namely the husband.

Irritable, grumpy?

Maybe it’s male menopause

GOOD MEDICINE DR MICHAEL GILLMAN AS MEN become older, we are often accused of going through a male menopause. Some of us become tired, irritable, lacking in motivation and have declining sex drives.

This is where the term “grumpy old men” comes from.

So do males go through menopause like our female counterparts and should all grumpy old men be taking testosterone replacement therapy?

Testosterone is produced predominantly in the testes. It is released into the body and is regulated by a part of the brain called the hypothalamus. If the levels are low, the hypothalamus sends a signal to the pituitary gland which in turn sends

a signal to the testosterone producing cells of the testes that more testosterone is needed. If there is too much testosterone, then no signal is sent to the testes and the cells stop producing the hormone.

The medical term for low testosterone is hypogonadism and it is present in around five per one hundred men.

If the testosterone is found to be low on a blood test, then the next step is to work out why it is low.

By clearly identifying the reason that the testosterone is low, we can treat the cause.So if you or a loved one is a “grumpy old man”, see your local Doctor and arrange for testing to find out why you feel this way.

Avoid taking testosterone or testosterone boosters unless the testicles have failed. It is always best to treat the cause and not just the symptoms.

Rotary Clubs have been participating in this awareness program that for over 25 years in an effort to help reduce the 4000 deaths that occur each year as a result of Bowel Cancer. Studies have shown that this

2. You can and probably should update your Will People often think that making a Will is something you only need to do once. This is a common, but serious misconception. Many life events can have a significant impact on your Will. These include: ■ Marriage; ■ Divorce; ■ Entering into a de facto relationship; ■ Having a child, stepchild or grandchild; ■ Family members passing away; ■ Change in financial circumstances; ■ Moving interstate or overseas.

When a person marries, any existing Will they have in place is automatically

revoked, unless the Will has been made in contemplation of marriage.

In the case of a person divorcing, certain parts of an existing Will are revoked. Any clauses in a Will that provide a gift or beneficial interest to a former spouse are revoked by divorce as are any clauses appointing a former spouse as an executor, trustee or guardian.

It is advisable to review your Will every two to three years, or whenever you experience any of the above life events to ensure it still reflects your intentions. We are able to help you if you have an existing Will which needs updating.

I BOUGHT a new motorbike last month, a Triumph for those curious. During the review process, I travelled to the state capital in order to test-ride several exotic machines while engaging in a spot of bargaining with the big dealers. I even ventured onto the World Wide Web to make comparisons. Upon completing my review, I purchased my new bike back home in Cairns.

You see, I trust the dealer. There was no hyperbole, no spin and no cons; just good old-fashioned straight talking. What he promised, he delivered – again. He must be doing something right because this was the sixth motorbike I’d purchased from him.

Which brings me to the forthcoming elections.

We are going to be bombarded by hyperbole, promises and spin in the lead-up to the federal election. There may also be a state election thrown in just to keep us from getting bored. So, in the months ahead,

after listening to what I’m sure will be well-crafted rhetoric, the question I will be asking is: “What have you done for retirees?” Let me be clear, I’ll be differentiating between “what the pollies have done” as opposed to “what the pollies claim they will do”. The former is hard and revealing; the latter as easy as

plucking words from the sky – with few repercussions. If I’m to give a party a second chance, I have to be able to trust its representative.

Most of us are retired while others are nearing this privileged state. As a consequence, we are all sufficiently aged to understand that “trust” takes a long time to

develop. However, that same “trust” can be destroyed by one action in the blink of an eye.

When the great day of reckoning finally arrives and you find yourself standing at the gates of the polling booth, the “trust factor” can be a solid guide. If in doubt, ask yourself: “What have they done for retirees?”

Changes coming to Assets Test the current pace, those close to the upper limit could really start to feel the pinch.

For couples who own their own homes the upper limit will effectively be cut to around $823,000 and $547,000 for singles.

As of January 1, a couple who owns their own home with assets in excess of $823,000 face a $14,000 cut in pension payments.

So what options are available now for reducing your assessable assets and keeping part or all of your pension?

Contribute to super For those under 65, your superannuation is not included in your assets. Consider making larger or more contributions before you hit pension age or contribute to your partner’s superannuation if they are under pension age.

THERE will be winners and losers when new assets test rules are introduced from January 1, 2017.

More than 200,000 part age pensioners face a partial cut to their age pension while more than 90,000 face the prospect of losing their pension completely.

On the positive side, from January the Government will increase the assets test limit to qualify for the full pension from $291,500 to $375,000 for couples who own their own home and from $202,500 to $250,000 for singles.

However, under the new rules the amount you will lose for every $1000 over this limit will double from the current rate of $1.50 to $3 per fortnight.

But remember, once you hit age pension age your superannuation does become an assessable asset.

The service is part of Caxton Legal Centre, a community legal centre in South Brisbane.

Secret Mykonos taverna Treat yourself to a Greek dining experience that will rival all others

WHAT are the chances?

You discover a tiny taverna on a Greek Island, so hidden it is invisible.

It has no telephone, no electricity, no signage, a no reservations policy.

You have to know someone who knows someone who knows someone else and is willing to tell you all about it.

It is in a remote section of Mykonos, on a desolate hill amid a brown denuded landscape, blocked from sight beneath the bushy umbrella branches of a large tree.

Three of us were determined to experience it after learning of its rustic charm in hushed whispers on a busy beach on the island.

“It’s very small. It opens only for lunch.

They cook enormous pork chops and delicious sword fish and giant baked potatoes on an open fire and the views over the sea are

wonderful but you might have to wait to get in, and if the food runs out, that’s it, they close.”

Such pressure.

But we were unwavering. We found it.

A queue had formed outside. Opening time was 1pm and not a second before.

When the clock struck one, the owner, a large handsome man looked over the top of a wall at the long line of desperate hopefuls outside, pointed at those he deemed first in line and said: “You, you, you and you.”

We were in. And smug.

The small bare tables, the inspiring simplicity of the mouth-watering food, the smell of the open grill fire, the glittering sea views, the haughty discern of the owner, and the strict policy that the baked potato came only with the pork, never with the swordfish, all made for such a vivid experience, I returned to Australia and wrote about it.

I referred cheekily to the wonderful owner as The Potato Nazi. He had

refused to give our friend with the swordfish a potato despite our pleading and offers of extra payment.

“No potato with the fish,” he said firmly and there was no question of negotiation.

We had loved it very much and despite the tongue-in-cheek reference to The Potato Nazi, I wrote fondly of it.

In my wildest dreams I could not have imagined someone from regional

Queensland would cut out the article, take it all the way to the remote

part of Mykonos, find the hidden taverna and brandish my story in front of The Potato Nazi.

Really? What were the chances?

He was not pleased when we returned the following year for another magical experience.

With a livid face, he pointed at me. “You,” he thundered, “I don’t let you in.”

Fortunately, after my pleas that the story really had been flattering in its mischief, he conceded and let us in where he produced my small story from a scrapbook and reluctantly said his wife thought I had described him perfectly.

We have returned to the taverna every year

for a decade now on an annual pilgrimage because it is, quite simply, the most glorious Greek Island food experience.

Other writers before and after me have written about this marvellous place - there was even a story in the New York Times, much to our owner’s feigned horror.

The Potato Nazi has a soft heart. His taverna is small and despite the fish/potato policy, he loves to please everyone. and is uncomfortable about the queues.

He even passes free wine in small pink aluminium containers over the wall to the people waiting outside.

I’m not going to tell you the name of the taverna in case you print this out and take it to him.

I really like my annual pilgrimage.

The mysteries of Laos Land Of A Million Elephants deserves all of its accolades Melissa Findley

THE Mekong River flows through Laos, a South-East Asian country known for its mountainous terrain, French colonial architecture, hill tribe communities and Buddhist monasteries.

The easygoing, waterside capital of Vientiane is the site of That Luang, a shrine allegedly containing the Buddha’s breastbone, the morning market of Talat Sao, and the Patuxai war memorial, a massive monument meaning Victory Gate.

Laos deserves all the accolades it receives.

Adrenaline seekers can lose themselves in underground river caves or whitewater rapids.

Wildlife enthusiasts can trek through pristine forests, still home to rare creatures, and foodies can experiment with the abundance of flavours that is Lao cuisine.

How lucky was I to visit The Land of a Million

Elephants, where I fell head over heels in love with this country. I went to check out elephant conservation and to discover Laos.

Waking up at sunrise, I walk along the upper Mekong, quietly roaming the streets, observing the glowing temples.

The locals are up, going about their daily routine as I saunter to Wat Sisaket, the oldest original temple (built in 1818), and the only one to survive the Thai invasion of 1828. Across the street I get to explore the Haw Pha Kaew temple.

Then I discover the golden-spired stupa, Pha That Luang, the most important national monument in Laos and symbolic of both the monarchy and Buddhism.

Something I find heart-wrenching, but also very moving, is spending time in the COPE Centre, which provides prosthetic limbs for victims of mine explosions and brings attention to the tragic

Less than an hour’s flight to the former royal capital, Luang Prabang, I get closer to celebrating the 20th anniversary of the city’s UNESCO World Heritage status and the arrival of the Elephant Caravan. As soon as I

arrive, I feel an overwhelming sense of peace, and I allow for a few days to explore the historic architecture, the Buddhist temples and to watch the sunrise procession of 200 Buddhist monks.

The water lures you in when you see the beauty

of the waterfalls near Luang Prabang.

A two-hour cruise along The Mekong on board a slow boat brings us to the mysterious Cave of a Thousand Buddhas at Pak Ou. Here, in a tradition that has lasted centuries, local people add annually to a

repository of Buddha statues.

On my visit to Laos, I take the chance to participate in the Elephant Caravan, whose mission is to stave off the extinction of this majestic species in the small, landlocked country.

Two islands of Thailand Koh Samui’s twin sister island Koh Phangan is spectacular Phil Hawkes

IT SEEMS everybody’s heard of Koh Samui. It’s a well-known tourist magnet in the Gulf of Thailand, right?

An island with great beaches, food, markets, hotels and resorts? Yes, that’s all true.

But there’s a twin sister island not far from Samui.

Too far to swim, unless you’re an experienced channel swimmer, but just a short ferry ride away. It’s called Koh Phangan (pronounced Ko Par Narn).

And it’s spectacular.

I discovered Phangan about 30 years ago. There was little development then. Backpacker lodges all around the island, some on quite remote beaches, reachable only by longtail boat. Not too accessible in a medical emergency. But it’s funny how, despite this lack of access, the entire world made the annual pilgrimage to the Full Moon Festival on one tiny corner of the island. Do I

remember that event? Not very well.

Phangan has changed.

No longer the exclusive haunt of backpackers, its natural attractions (which are considerable) are now enhanced by a huge range of activities and the full spectrum of accommodation choices right up to five-star level.

We now find ourselves at the stunning Santhiya Resort, a 30-minute ride from the ferry port on the other side of the island, but well worth the bumps.

Here, the general manager is on hand with musicians and staff to welcome guests – a sign of the personal service the hotel is famous for.

Perhaps the most defining feature of Santhiya is the extraordinary attention to detail in the villas as well as the public areas. The owners have their own wood carving and furniture factory, evident in small decorative touches such as individual lampshades, screens and even

The outdoor shower and bath in most villas is fun to use in this tropical climate. The resort is particularly conscious of environmental sustainability, and includes extensive use of recycled timber (although one guest complained that a wooden railway sleeper was “too old”)! Other practices include the use

of herbal products, minimum use of plastic, and segmented waste disposal.

Santhiya has two dining areas: the main Chantara restaurant with quality Thai and international cuisine; and By the Sea at beach and main pool level, with a bar and more informal menu. This resort makes a trip to Koh Phangan worthwhile.

Coast artists win award Cyclorama tells story of famous HMAV Bounty mutiny Jim Fagan

It’s a “must see” if you go to Norfolk Island.

Two former Sunshine Coast artists have created a tourist attraction topped only by Australian landmarks like the Sydney Opera House, the Harbour Bridge, National War Museum and the National Park in the Northern Territory.

Called the “Cyclorama” it is a 360-degree piece of panoramic artwork which tells the story of Fletcher Christian, his famous mutiny on the HMAV Bounty and the events that led to the settlements on Pitcairn and Norfolk islands.

It has been voted No 5 in the on-line travel giant Trip Advisor Traveller’s Choice Awards and No 6 in the South Pacific. For the two artists, Tracey Yager and Sue Draper, the recognition is a “fantastic reward” for the two years it took to complete.

Climbing our world famous rock Ayers Rock, known by its indigenous name of Uluru a is huge chunk of sandstone and a true monolith, it resides in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Ayers Rock is located down towards the south-west corner of the Northern Territory and close to the geographic centre of Australia.

The rock is huge, jutting up about 350m from its barren surrounds and is a

World Heritage site. The Pitjantjatjara Aboriginals own the land around the rock.

Uluru is about 335kms to the south-west of Alice Springs,463kms by road, and is served by the small resort town of Yulara. This is where tourists stay and most people spend the night, either in hotel accommodation or camping; there are no actual camping or other

facilities within the park itself.

Visitors can climb the rock as well as explore the base of it, which is around 10kms by footpath. The trip up takes a good couple of hours there and back. Although if you are fit and hotfoot it, it can be done in 20 or 30 minutes (not recommended in the summer). It is best to observe the rock during sunrise and sunset.

It’s not every day you get the chance to see three former members of The Ten Tenors on stage.

Three-piece ensemble Tenori features the talents of David Kidd, Craig Atkinson and Andrew Pryor, who toured internationally together as members of The Ten Tenors.

QUEENSLAND Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) is calling for volunteers for its 2016 Out of the Box festival for children eight years and under to be held at QPAC and across the Cultural Precinct and South Bank, Brisbane from June 21-28.

Presented biennially, Out of the Box has been curated by QPAC for 24 years. It is the only arts festival in Australia dedicated to children eight years and under and one of only a few in the world.

It’s also the nation’s largest early childhood arts festival with more than 103,000 participants in the 2014 festival.

The 2016 Festival crosses over the end of the school term and into the June school holidays and provides a rich arts-based program including performances, workshops, free events and symposiums.

Looking back on ’80s life DURING 1988, with the financial assistance of the Australian Bicentennial Authority, six photographers were commissioned to produce a portfolio on the theme of community life in Queensland titled Journeys North.

Last exhibited in January 1988, it is an ideal time to re-examine this portfolio, which highlights how Queensland has changed in the 28 years since it was commissioned.

The photographers involved – Graham Burstow, Lin Martin, Robert Mercer, Glen O’Malley, Charles Page and Max Pam – each travelled to different regions of Queensland.

During the course of about 18 months, the photographers each documented through their work the lifestyles,

attitudes and values of Queensland society in the late 1980s.

Although overall these images present a coherent record of both the natural and social features of the state during this time, significant individuality is evident within and between each artist’s contribution as they each addressed the project’s theme in a way that related to their earlier work and their personal interests.

As a result, many of these images question attitudes that have long been an accepted part of Australian community life, while others reaffirm the unique difference and richness of the Australian lifestyle, land and environment.

IT hasn’t taken a village to make it happen, instead just one man has formed a village, albeit a small one, of his own making.

Brendan Foley’s vision materialised as a small group of older people living together, off-grid, working at individual chores, sharing the costs of food and essentials on a his rural acreage.

The 4.5acre property, called Foley Farm, definitely has shades of a 1970s style commune.

But the former businessman and long-time North Coast resident has reinvented the concept of communal living to suit a group of baby boomers.

He said retirement gave him the time to think about suitable living arrangements for his generation. In many respects he found a negative narrative attached to retirees.

Brendan had just retired and was keeping busy building what was initially intended as a weekender on his acreage north of Noosa.

In a moment of serendipity, his realisation that the building job was just too big for himself and his ongoing thoughts about alternative, retirement accommodation married up and he saw an opportunity to create a viable living arrangement.

proposition he believed would appeal to single, retired people, in an age bracket that was young enough to do their share of work, hence baby boomers (Born 1946 to 1964).

“If I could offer a standalone sleeping space and communal living space would there be interest?

An advertisement in flatmates.com described the living situation/requirements and sparked interest.

The project has received Council affirmations and abides by local government building by-laws.

His own research has seen the development of solar power, wastewater treatment and DIY building solutions.

“The farm is totally ‘off the grid’ with a solar system and battery bank.

There is a wastewater treatment plant emitting clean water, a deep spring water bore and rain collection,” he said.
