In an instant the thought of those beautiful blues flew me back to the 80s.

For many of us it was a time of renovating old Queenslanders in inner

HE’S excited about his life. Enthused, animated, energetic, positive, happy.

A change of pace suits Trevor Harch. But as a vigneron?

Where does the builder of some of Queensland’s best commercial buildings retire to?

No, not a yacht drifting around the world. Nor a glitzy penthouse overlooking the ocean.

Retirement village reminiscing?

Few would guess but he and family are re-inventing themselves in South Australia.

Trevor is as happy as a

pig in mud in the Keyneton hills at the head of the Eden Valley above the famous Barossa wine growing region.

Dirt roads, derelict stone ruins and untended vines equate to his own version of pure paradise.

Since acquiring the run-down wreck of someone else’s dream the former director of Evans Harch constructions has redirected his energies into an outstanding transformation.

Where once a butcher shop dating back to the 1880s and later a brothel flourished, the most intimate wine tasting

room stands. The fully restored stone building sits among 106 acres including grape vines dating back 119 years.

Alongside this charming stone wine-tasting room in Sawpit Rd sits a reconstructed home.

Not just an ordinary place to sleep but a haven which will soon become one of the best B and Bs in the mighty Barossa Valley. Settled in among the vines, you will look out into row upon row of grapes.

Each season provides a different vista. Autumn leaves one with a sense of peace and harmony of colour ... reds, maroons,

yellows, greens and some grapes left to dry upon the vine for snacking on “sultanas”.

This is what retirement is all about. But what a change. From big buildings to grape vines and stone cottages.

Having been brought up on the land and an avid wine enthusiast since his early 30s, Trevor came to his own conclusion after many years of research that there really was no other wine that tasted as good as Barossa shiraz, so why not make some yourself?

“I decided to look for a good vineyard, grow grapes, make wine, sell

Living with a piece of Ken Done Gail Forrer

IN THE 1980s Ken Done came to town and everyone invited him home.

He stepped inside with abstract images, a rich, vibrant palette and presented his celebration of colour on mugs, doonas, curtains and cushions. We wore his signature dresses, t-shirts and swimmers. We drank with Ken Done cups, we wore Ken Done clothes and we slept with Ken Done quilts.

Here was a man who sensed the Australia that we felt – the heat of the yellow sun, the rich blue wash of the Pacific ocean.

He caught the vibration of native animals and reflected back to us the perfumed colour of our favourite flora.

He was talking to all of us who loved and lived on the Australian coastline.

Forty years after connecting beach loving Australians with their sun soaked coastline, artist Ken Done is taking us to the polar opposite – Antarctica.

Inspired by a trip last year to the ice-riven landscape, he has recently completed a series of 30 paintings, Paintings from Antarctica.

From the man who so skilfully interpreted the intensity of the Australian sun, the show presents his unique expression of a

dramatically different continent.

Yet, home is where his heart remains. At 76 years old, Ken Done’s inner artist is still fed by the surrounding beauty of his Chinaman’s Bay property along with the bigger picture of Sydney and regular world travels.

His long-term home and 35-year-old marriage to Judy proves that very early on, Ken realised the elements of sustainable joy.

“Judy are I are like-minded,” he said.

“And we have a shared visual understanding.

“But in 50 years there are hills and valleys, and you just have to find way to get through them.”

The couple also share two children and to their great delight, three grandchildren.

Ken said a great happiness came from having his grandchildren in the art studio.

He sets up the studio before their arrival and then it’s a time for fun and freedom.

He keeps fits with daily swims and a dally in the fresh air as he feeds the local parrots.

He doesn’t mind a game golf but admits to falling asleep watching television.

This year he is preparing for a trip to islands off Scotland and he is looking forward to

making more memories.

“You can’t look back for a second,” he said.

“People around my age can still have a lifetime ahead of them.”

Last dancer lives a dream

Li Cunxin’s amazing life ‘quite surreal’

One of the biggest shocks of my life was when I sat in the cinema watching my own movie.

Ann Rickard talks to an inspiring man – Chinese-born, Brisbane-based Li Cunxin

IT’S A long way from Shandong in rural China to the cosmopolitan city of Brisbane, geographically and culturally, and Li Cunxin, artistic director of Queensland Ballet, never forgets it for a minute.

His story of escape from poverty in rural China to international ballet super stardom is well documented.

His 2003 memoir Mao’s Last Dancer followed by the 2009 movie of the same name, brought to life the extraordinary story of Li’s journey from hardship and hunger in rural China to stardom on the international ballet stage, and gained him millions of fans worldwide.

myself I am not dreaming.”

He could be forgiven if he was dreaming.

As a small 11-year-old boy in 1972, Li, one of seven sons born to peasant farmers in

Shandong, was chosen by the Chinese Communist Party to train at Madame Mao’s Beijing Dance Academy as part of Mao’s Cultural Revolution.

He battled heartbreaking loneliness and the constant pain of gruelling exercise and dance regimes, but at the age of 18 he became one of the leading students in Beijing and was invited to America to dance in an exchange-student program with the Houston Ballet Company.

The culture shock of leaving Communist China for the freedom of America, and having to rethink all he’d been taught about the west, slowly grew into a love affair with America, which led to his brave and dangerous decision to defect.

Spine-tingling show Prepare to be dazzled as Cirque du Soleil returns Ann Rickard

Gail Forrer reports ideas from global experts OLDER people are a diverse demographic, who have proven to be of great help during disasters and emergency situations rather than needing help according to experts at the International Federation of Ageing 13th annual Global Conference held in Brisbane June 21-23.

While a panel of global experts talking about catastrophes and the older person presented statistics showing extremely high mortality rate next to other age groups during natural disasters, they also urged policy makers to recognise the ageing population’s diversity.

Godfrey Paul, senior regional manager of HelpAid international, wasted no time in giving us a reality check. He said the 21st century as we thought it would happen had not arrived.

He said we had

envisaged a contemporary world a shrunk in time and space, a tightly knit global village. Instead we have a world of war and hate. At the same time we are faced with two mega trends simultaneously converging on us – Ageing and Climate Change.

Along with fellow panellists discussing the older person and natural catastrophes, he called for the stereotypical definition of the older person as the passive recipient, to be replaced with a recognition of the demographic’s diversity.

Dr Lisa Brown, of California, was on the same page, but went further and suggested that older people should be considered for volunteer roles during emergencies. She said that older people could be seen as a resource for assisting, not necessarily in need of assistance.

“Age in and of itself

does not make a person vulnerable. We do not place all teenagers and infants in the same category, but if a person has grey hair, we assume they are vulnerable and need services.

“We need a new narrative.”

She said disaster planning could be an opportunity for community development, that it was a time to talk about needs, support and peer education.

Professor Junko Otani, of Osaka University, noted that Japan had the largest ageing population in the world. She called Japan a “super ageing society”.

She emphasised that data revealed that during natural disaster it was peer groups and neighbours who helped the older person rather family members, thus realising the importance of social engagement in disaster planning.

Dr Bradley Willcox is a physician-investigator in geriatrics and gerontology and the man who told us about the health secrets of the long living Okinawa people. Along with a scientific team and his anthropologist twin brother, he examined the dietary habits of what is known as longest living people in the world. Sweet potatoes, he told me, played the biggest role in their diets, particularly purple ones, this along with jasmine tea and miso.

$1.1m in budget for vision-impaired MINISTER’S MESSAGE CORALEE O’ROURKE VISION Australia in Coorparoo will benefit from more than $1.1 million in funding, set to support people who are blind or have low vision to continue living independently in their communities.

Disability Services Minister Coralee O’Rourke said the funding was part of a $1.7 billion allocation for disability services in this year’s State Budget,

which reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving the lives of people with disability.

“Our government is proud to fund organisations like Vision Australia, to continue to provide much-needed services and supports to people who are blind or have low vision,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

“This funding will help to provide accommodation support, learning and life skills support, therapy support, social outings, adaptive communication support, technology training, information library services, and

information referrals services.

“It will also help to deliver education and training services, so clients can get ‘job-ready’ by learning new skills and improving their workplace knowledge.

“Above all, this funding will help to develop creative solutions and tailored strategies to support clients to live as independently in their communities as they choose.

In summer, keep your worms in a cool, sheltered environment, away from direct sunlight.

In the colder months, move them into a sunny area to keep them productive as temperatures drop.

Where possible, place close to your kitchen so it’s convenient to maintain and add scraps.

SET UP YOUR WORM FARM

The easiest way to get started is to buy a commercially made worm farm. These usually have two or three layers, all of which do different things.

HOW DO I GET STARTED?

Add your worms and cover them with five sheets of damp newspaper and a hessian sack or old t-shirt.

Replace the worm farm lid and you’re ready to go.Once your middle layer is full to the brim, you can begin to use your top, or third, level.

Start by placing food, covered with your hessian sack, in this level, and your worms will gradually move upwards to live and feed.

REMEMBER:

■ Worm farms process less food than a compost bin, so make sure you’re not overfeeding your worms. Uneaten food will begin to smell and attract unwanted pests.

■ Each day a worm will consume approximately it’s body weight in food.

This means you can feed your worm farm a few handfuls every few days.

Once it’s established and the worms are breeding, you can try feeding them more food.

■ Cut food into small pieces.

Choose any fruit that’s ripe but still firm and try your own recipes, experiment with flavours, add a bit of whiskey to marmalade, cinnamon and vanilla bean paste to fig jam or rose-hip syrup to berry jam. Making jam at home is a simple process that requires few ingredients, but it is easy to get it wrong.

A few simple rules to follow ■ 1. To set, jam needs pectin from the fruit and some varieties have more than others. For extra pectin, add a muslin pouch of lemon rind and seeds or store bought pectin available in your supermarket.

■ 2. Cook the fruit in a heavy-based pan until it’s soft but still holds its shape. This releases pectin and sets the jam.

■ 3. Skim foam from the surface as it cooks and to prevent burning, stir constantly for the last 10 minutes.

■ 4. Ladle the hot jam into clean, dry jars and invert for 2 minutes to seal.

To store Jam ■ Wash jars and lids in hot, soapy water or dishwasher, then rinse and dry on a rack ■ Store jam in a cool, dark place away for up to six months. Once opened, store in the fridge for up to six weeks.

You can use your home phone at the same time as being on the internet to make calls.

ADSL is the slower of the two types of ADSL2+.

What type of ADSL you choose will depend on how fast you want your internet to go.

I’m sweating small stuff ❝ Youth carries on without a care in the world and then all of a sudden....

OF ALL the things that creep up on us as we age – aching feet, creaking knees, deteriorating eyesight, you know them all – I never thought an increase in anxiety over

very small matters would be one of them.

But it is so.

I fret now about missing planes, trains, buses and dental appointments. The last one bothers me not much, admittedly, but it is the awful anxiety over small issues I now experience when I travel.

Where once I would book an airline ticket, throw it in the draw, never

look at it again until I got to the airport check-in counter, now I have to take it out of said drawer and check it half a dozen times a day leading up to my departure.

I fret in the car all the way to the airport that some detail on the ticket will be wrong and I won’t be allowed on the plane.

Then I worry that my passport will somehow

mysteriously disappear from the wallet I have secured it in and locked in my bag. ( You never know, aliens could come down, filter through the car roof, get into my bag and take it.) (See? Real and stupid anxiety.)

As for catching trains in foreign countries.

Nightmare.

on a train, full of anticipation of an exciting journey looking out the window to happy cows in idyllic countryside, now I almost foam at the mouth with angst that I will be on the wrong train and heading in a direction quite opposite to the one in which I want to go.

I make light of this, but it is very real, and I now know how people who suffer constant anxiety feel. It’s a terrible and tangible thing and I don’t know what to do about it (apart from giving up travel, not negotiable.)

I blame on my husband (why not? he cops it for everything else.)

He was refused embarkation on a flight recently because his ticket was in the name of ‘Geoff’ and his passport was in the name of "Geoffrey". They would not make the change at the airport and not let him on.

I blame him again for the time he booked us on a flight out of Mykonos to Paris being all clever and doing it himself on-line in April for our flight in July.

But instead of typing in

Five members of the Absolutely Fabulous Red Hatters of Cabarlah/Highfields (Ab Fabs for short) and four ladies from the Ageless Angels Toowoomba attended the birthday celebrations of our Queen Mother Florence Slattery, who turned 100 years young. Tuesday, June 14, was a day of celebration for Red Hatters Australiawide. Queen Mother Florence attended a luncheon at the Warwick Golf Club with more than 140 Red Hatters from around south-east Queensland.

We had a fabulous day celebrating this wonderful lady’s 100 birthday. Many travelled quite a distance from the Sunshine Coast and other areas to enjoy a day of friendship, fellowship and fun, catching up with many friends throughout the day. Queen Mother Florence brought Red Hatting to Australia in 2001, forming the Rose City Reds. There aremore than 380 chapters throughout Australia today.

Don’t despair, there are medical options to reduce male hair loss

Most men accept male pattern hair loss as a normal part of aging, however it can cause distress, particularly if it occurs at an early age.

MALE pattern hair loss is a common condition affecting most men as they age.

Significant balding affects about 20% of men in their 20s, 30% of men in their 30s and nearly half of men in their 40s.

The hair usually begins receding at the temples, followed by the back of the head around the crown. In some men the loss can be extensive, with the top of the head left without hair.

Most men accept male pattern hair loss as a normal part of aging, however it can cause distress, particularly if it occurs at an early age.

Medical treatments are available and the two main therapies are Finasteride and Monoxidil.

Finasteride is a tablet

that blocks the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone.

Dihydrotestosterone acts on the hair follicles, causing the hair to gradually become thinner and shorter and so by reducing this compound, the hair follicles are not affected to the same degree.

It can take up to four months to have an effect and up to two years before hair regrowth is noticeable. Sixty per cent of men taking this tablet each day will experience some hair regrowth, while 30% will have no hair regrowth.

In the 30% group, most will not have any further hair loss. Side effects are uncommon, however 2% of men may experience a lower sex drive because of its action on testosterone.

Minoxidil is a lotion applied to the head twice daily. It can take up to four months before results are seen. Fifteen per cent of men using this treatment will see hair regrowth, while 30% will experience continued hair loss.

Again, side effects are uncommon but some men will experience skin irritation or rash.

Hair transplantation is where tiny plugs of hair are taken from areas where hair growth is still occurring and inserted into balding areas.

Multiple sessions are often needed but results are generally good and are permanent.

Lots of her books have been sold and our branch bought 10 of them, which we have donated to local schools for their libraries.

All proceeds from the sale of the books go to Mater Miracles. Our May coach trip was to Queens Gardens in Ipswich for a Devonshire morning tea and a walk through the gardens, followed by a delicious lunch and food tasting at the Mulgowie Hotel. At our June meeting we had a special High Tea after our meeting for eight of our members who have or are turning 80 this year.

Fifty of our members also attended the function with councillors from Logan City Council and past zone president Dr Marjorie Green. Very big thank you to Greenbank RSL Services Club for its invaluable assistance to the event. The June trip was to an ostrich farm in the Brisbane Valley. Lunch was at the Fernvale Bakery where we enjoyed a taste of their famous pie selection . Meetings are held monthly on the second Tuesday at Greenbank RSL at 10am.

by Fraser in Brisbane's CBD, the spread includes all the sweet treats you would expect such as brownies, panacotta, chocolate truffles and tiny meringues with lemon butter.

But not all is as it

seems and this spread is definitely different, except when it comes to flavour.

The truffles are bliss balls made from dates, chia seeds and cacao, the lemon meringue treats are made with paleo lemon curd using nut oil instead of gee and italian meringue made with maple syrup instead of sugar.

The paleo brownie comes with whipped coconut cream and the rounded mounds of

strawberry shortcake are sprayed with cocoa butter with turmeric through it, which gives a buttery texture when it sets firm.

Inside is panacotta with a strawberry gel and almond based sponge on the bottom.

The sliders (teeny, tiny hamburgers) are made with paleo bread rolls.

New on the Asana a la carte winter menu are a seafood laksa, bone marrow pho with beef short ribs, and a chicken healing broth.

If you are short on time, you can also get the chicken broth just as a mug of soup through the coffee shop.

Chef Josh Harris is a big fan of the chicken broth and regularly makes batches at home .

"It's great to have in the freezer," he says. "You can pull it out and use it

for a soup or sauce, or heat and add turmeric and ginger and lemongrass and have it as warming soup.

New entrees include a smoked ham hock terrine crumbed in nuts, tuna tartare, and a new winter warmer vegetarian dish

with roasted seasonal vegetables and smoked black garlic.

The new dessert is chocolate self saucing pudding with salted caramel coconut ice cream and maple glazed pecans and honey comb.

Bottom line: High Tea is

priced from $32 per person with coffee or tea and $42 with a glass of champagne.

Best tip: Take some design inspiration from the quirky decor in the restaurant and lobby.

Longing for Lugano Ann Rickard

IF THERE is one region in Europe that makes you go weak at the knees with longing it has to be Lugano, on the border of Switzerland and Italy.

Actually there are several European destinations that can cause shaky knees but it is the combination of regal mountains and placid lakes, melded with Swiss precision and the Italian zest for life, that makes Lugano so alluring.

The villa was home to Prince Federico Leopoldo until his death in 1931. It was built at the end of the 19th century for the family’s summer residence and half of Europe’s nobility have been guests. You are in good company there. It was transformed into a hotel in 1986.

Dining is an important component of a Villa Principe Leopoldo visit. In summer the dining is outside beneath a marquee overlooking the vast and enigmatic lake where the mountains rise gracefully from its

shores.

This is five-star dining, yet it is not pretentious. The menu and wine list reflect the sophistication, and the chef may present you with many courses including goose liver confit, poached sole in green pea and wasabi broth, and perhaps some local cheese and then a sweet finish of parfait scented with elderflower syrup. As the sun goes down and the lights on the mountain across the lake begin to glow and shimmer you’ll be a very content person.

Munich memories, old and new, brought to life IT’S many years… too many to count… since I last graced the temple of beer drinking known as the Hofbrauhaus in Munich, Germany. As a matter of fact I have little recollection of that evening, not even where I was staying… only that I went there with two thirsty young Canadian backpackers. It was one of those occasions I’d prefer to relegate to the darker corridors of memory.

This time, it’s different.

The place hasn’t changed at all, but we have. My wife has no such beery agenda, but we do enjoy a Hofbrauhaus indulgence of carnivorous pleasure, difficult for a would-be vegetarian, as we attack a schnitzel (hint: try the pork, not the veal)

seemingly the size of my waistline. Sauerkraut and potatoes add to the calorific input, followed by their famous apple strudel. Luckily, sharing a meal is tolerated.

That’s not the main reason to visit Munich these days. Not in the slightest. Because this proud Bavarian city (the home of BMW, which you’re encouraged to tour) has so much more to offer, in fact too much for a mere three days. We’re determined to make every moment count.

Cooktown, located at the mouth of the Endeavour River, is home to about 2500 people and was first settled in 1873 as a port to service the nearby Palmer River Goldfields.

SOME travel writers like to do extensive research before they embark on a trip.

They like to know as many details as possible about their destination before they go. Others would rather take the capricious “let-me-seewhen-I-get- there’’ approach. I fall in between. I like to know a little about where I am going, but too much.

So it was that I found myself enchanted to stumble across Germany’s premier shopping street in Frankfurt.

The Zeil just happened to be around the corner from my hotel (I was beautifully ignorant of this) and when I casually asked the concierge if there was any decent shopping nearby, he just pointed me around the corner. He didn’t make mention of the Zeil being a wide and lovely pedestrianised street with graceful sycamore trees

and wondrous shops.

See? Nice surprises await the unenlightened traveller. When you stumble on something great, you feel proprietorial towards it.

The Zeil was my discovery.

“You have just been through a cold winter and left the house in your normal gear without realising it was going to turn out a warm spring day,” I thought to myself as I passed all the luxury shops, itching to go into Louis Vuitton but refraining for fear of upsetting myself by looking at all those gorgeous products I couldn’t afford.

As is the case in most European countries, the shops were overheated, so all those people were entering the large department stores and pulling off hats, removing scarves and turning rosy with the heat.

There is no Sunday shopping in Germany and this vibrant street that had been packed with happy

shoppers and drinkers and sausage-eaters the day before, was deserted, desolate, as empty as a ghost town.

I had dragged my husband there telling him what a flamboyant street it was only to find not a soul out with all the doors firmly closed. So, Saturday is your go in Frankfurt.

WE NOW live in global economic environment with zero or negative interest rates in substantial parts of the developed world.

The results of the prolonged period of interest rates trending down has been a series of investment booms and busts, from the Japanese property bubble of the late 1980s through the “Asian Tigers” (and Asian crisis) of the 1990s, the tech bubble (and burst) in the 2000s, followed by the US (and other) housing booms (and GFC), China’s construction boom (a direct response to the GFC’s impact on its export industries) and the spill-over to resources (which is now fading), to the biotech bubble of the last two years. In Australia we are currently witnessing an ever-surging number of new apartments being built across our capital cities

as part of an overall home building program, which on a per capita view equals China’s 12.5 million starts.

With high levels of indebtedness after such growth, the system is more sensitive to interest rate increases. There is also significant excess capacity in all the areas that saw over-investment (eg mining), which reduces the need for further activity. While some think that low rates would encourage consumption, the reality is that low rates are leading people to save more for longer to meet their financial goals.

Inflation has been low for almost three decades.

The key drivers underlying the current low inflation are: the opening up of trade with developing economies that has provided and will continue to provide an enlarged pool of labour; advancements in technology, particularly in

NO, I’M not talking about stopping at the road traffic lights. But then, I could quite easily make an analogy to our own internal “traffic lights”.

The orange light comes on when we are rushing around too much and getting stressed. It’s warning us that it’s time to slow down in our lives. But do we always listen? If we ignore the orange light and don’t see the stop light coming, it’s a bit like the traffic cop suddenly coming up behind and pulling you over.

The “internal” stop sign can be something like a bad bout of the flu, a sprained ankle, a back injury, etc, something that leaves us with no choice, but to stop and rest. At first this can be stressful, feeling guilty about not carrying out your normal routine.

However, when you accept the situation and stop fighting it, this can end up being quite a blessing in disguise.

When we tune into our own traffic lights and listen to the signals to slow down, we can get into the habit of slowing down each day, rather than “crash” because we haven’t listened to our body signals.

THIS is my kind of cookbook – it’s for people without a lot of time, perhaps not a lot of skill or big gourmet dollars to sprinkle around, but those who enjoy imaginative, healthy and easy-to-make meals; (i.e. vibrantly colourful dishes that have a dashing look of personal creativity).

The book is all about the wonderful world of vegetables, pulses, berries, spreads and sauces. It gives us much more than just smart new ways to use our ancient produce and the introduction is quite

justified in boasting suitability for a wide range of palates including, gluten-free, vegans, pescatarian or a ‘meat-on-the-side-ian’.
