Laugh until you ache, it’s Fawlty Towers time Iconic TV show comes to stage in Brisbane later this year Ann Rickard

MOST of us past a certain age have likely watched all episodes of Fawlty Towers multiple times. The series first aired in 1975 and since then it has not been absent from our televisions for long with replays on the intervening four decades reminding us of the sheer laugh-out-loud joy of this iconic series. Now we have the chance to see it all over again, this time live. Fawlty Towers – Live on Stage will play in Brisbane at the end of this year. The role of Basil will be played by Australian actor Stephen Hall, who starred

The original television series was first broadcast on BBC Two in the UK in 1975 and is based on a real-life hotel owner. John Cleese came up with the idea for the character of Basil Fawlty when the Monty Python team stayed at the Gleneagles Hotel in Torquay. The owner of the hotel, Donald Sinclair, fascinated Cleese with his incredibly rude behaviour. Manic, snobbish, condescending, sycophantic and rude,

Speaking with Ita

seniorsnews.com.au Thursday, May 5, 2016

Speaking up with Ita Ita Buttrose continues 40 years of advocacy ITA Buttrose is loud and clear on this point. “If you are lucky, you get to be old,” she said. “My brother was dead at 62, he would have loved to get old.” In 1988, this doyenne of media received an Order of Australia for service in the health care areas particularly in HIV/AIDS education. In 2013 she was named Australian Senior of the Year for work in dementia. The award also gave her a platform to talk about age discrimination. Today her ambition is to make Australia an “Alzheimer-friendly” country, bust out ageing myths and see that mature-age people are treated fairly in the workplace. But she believes change must come from the top. “It’s all about leadership, we need enlightened leaders, management, trailblazers to show the way” she said. “Look at Bob Hawke, John Howard – we need more people like them to speak up.” The 74-year-old television personality and Alzheimers Association advocate said she saw examples of ageism every

day, but remembered clearly the first examples. “When I had ITA magazine, we would talk to potential advertisers and say our magazine was geared towards women over 40 and 50-years-old. “At the mention of that age, their eyes would glaze over. “It wasn’t until the babyboomers reached 50, that people realised this age group was fit, active and contributing.” She said there was definitely age discrimination in the workplace and advised

Look at Bob Hawke, John Howard – we need more people like them to speak up. employers to take off their blinkers. “In Sydney, I see signs asking for waiters, baristas, people in the service industry. “If there’s a shortfall in the service industry, why not take on older people. “It’s a myth that older people take more sick leave or have less commitment or can’t adapt. Older people can learn and adapt as well as

anyone.” Ita believes that the key to good health is through preventative measures. “Regular exercise, eat properly, participate socially.” Her health advice also extends to fall prevention. She warned of the prevalence of falls and noted a number of celebrities who had recently sustained injuries from falls. “Look at Molly Meldrum and just recently Kerri-Anne’s husband John Kennerley.” She said among other things, local councils needed to ensure adequate street lighting and solid paving. “If brick paving becomes unstuck, it can be a hazard,” she said. She said her personal public speaking appearances held their own safety problems. “To get to many of the stages, there are steps without railings,” she said. Ita said she was at the point where she would ask if railings were there - or if not to have them installed. Again exercise, is an important preventative, particularly exercises that enhance your balance. She mostly practises what she preaches: “But I’m not perfect,” she declares.

FORWARD THINKING: Ita Buttrose believes change must come from the top.

“I have an hour’s walk every day and longer if I can, I work out with light weights a couple of times a week. “But I have a terrible dilemma at the moment,” she confessed. It turned out to be a freezer full of delicious ice-cream samples, she was finding hard to resist. “I love ice-cream,” she laughed. In her role as an advocate for Alzheimers, she notes that brain

health is as important as body health. “There is a misconception,” she said. “That dementia is a normal part of ageing, it’s not, it often comes with ageing, but it is a chronic disease.” She said with dementia sufferers we needed to be kind and recognise the person inside. Her own journey with the disease started with her father’s diagnosis and learning to live with him

and make him comfortable. For years now, she has been speaking to groups about this devastating disease and encouraging government to better their health policies and nursing services. Ita intends to keep fighting for change and she invites you to join the battle. “Kick down that door,” “And say that you demand respect, work and employment.”

Wanted. One senior for dream internship Yes, you have to be over 60 for this chance of a lifetime... OVER 60 and love to travel? Then you can broaden your skills with a senior internship at a prominent e-commerce company. Australia’s leading travel site Luxury Escapes has a dream internship up for grabs, and the work experience participant will not only be trained in blogging, vlogging, social media and marketing, but will also get to travel and trial luxury hotels for free. There is only one very specific requirement to meet – you have to be a senior, that is over 60 years of age, to apply. “We believe Australians with great life experience have so much to contribute to the world of online travel. We are hoping the senor internship will help us understand this

demographic’s preferences and needs when it comes to researching and booking travel online, and staying at five-star resorts around the world,” said Livinia Nixon, ambassador for LuxuryEscapes.com. The internship will involve two days of training at Luxury Escapes’ Sydney office, and 10 days of luxury travel in Bali, while trialling and reviewing five-star properties including Grand Hyatt Bali and Fairmont Sanur Beach Bali for Luxury Escapes. The intern will also share the entire journey across social media. According to Ms Nixon, this internship is not only a great way to travel in style, but a chance to learn new skills, as seen recently in the Hollywood

STILL WORKING: Kevin Rudd hopes to keep working as long as he is useful. PHOTO: CONTRIBUTED

IMMIGRATION Minister Peter Dutton’s mean-spirited comments recently that Kevin Rudd should retire and just take up caravanning must have sent shudders through many seniors. While caravanning is marvellous, to suggest that it is all older people should be doing is offensive to all seniors. Kevin Rudd, Australian Prime Minister from 2007 to 2010 and again in 2013, is now based in New York where he has no caravan but does have a number of impressive titles, the main one, President of Asia Society Policy Institute. He also has his eye on the top job at the United Nations, replacing Ban Ki-Moon. I don’t think caravanning is on his agenda. Rudd is one senior who just keeps on keeping on. Love him or hate him, you have to admire his capacity to push on when,

at age almost 60, and with no financial concerns he could so easily sit back and relax. Continued study and constant learning along with on-going work are vital to his wellbeing. “My attitude to life and work is that no matter whatever I am doing, one day they will take me out in a box, from some desk, somewhere,” he said in a telephone interview with Senior’s Newspapers while he was en route from Washington DC to Ottawa. “In some cultures people are working in their 70s, 80s and even 90s not because they have to, but because it is part of their life. “That is somewhat different to Australia. “My aspiration is to keep working as long as I am useful.” His work now with the Asia Society Policy Institute ensures his mind is constantly alert, open and engaged. He studied the Chinese

language at the Australian National University after he’d finished high school. “I found studying Mandarin really bloody hard,” he said. “If you are learning a foreign language and want to speak it fluently, the easiest thing is to start when a little kid at school. But I persevered for the first three months, every day at the Australian National University. “ By about the three month point, I remember saying ‘this is like going back to Grade 1, sounding out words’. “But slowly and surely it all started to come together. It took five years (to become fluent in Mandarin.) I speak French a little. I have workable French but my wife is terrified of me speaking it in case I get it wrong.” Whatever your opinions on Kevin Rudd, you have to admire his work attitude and strong sense of purpose...it’s a good act for seniors to emulate.

“Usually for mother’s day, my children buy me towels or pillows and once even a basket for the cat. Last year, after a wonderful lunch in the park with my family, we came home and I found that for a Mother’s Day gift my son had organised the replacement of my old toilet seat with an electronic Bidet toilet seat. Tale of an The rewards of never giving up

GIVING up, even when times were very tough, money scarce and raising three daughters on her own was a trial, was never an option for Brisbane publisher Rhonda Bannister. The 66-year-old woman is the founder/operator of Graphic Publishing, a mini publishing empire based in Brisbane with a portfolio of high-end gloss magazines including Queensland Homes, Holidays for Couples, and Queensland Brides. Rhonda is now at an age when she could easily put her feet up after a lifetime of hard work but that is not an option. “I love what I do,” she said on the eve of a work-related trip to the US and Canada. “My three daughters are now all in the business, but I’m still there with them.” Rhonda published her first magazine, Queensland Brides, in 1984.

She was adamant from the beginning that she would publish only high-quality gloss magazines and there would be no compromising on standards. “There was no Queensland magazine at all for brides at that time,” she said. “I saw a niche in the market so I just went ahead and did it.

We had 1500 brides-to-be come through the doors with their friends and families at our recent expo, 3000 people all together.

— Rhonda Bannister

“I was 34 when I started my first magazine. My three daughters were 10, 8 and 5. I was married then but later separated

and raised my daughters on my own as I worked building my magazines.” The first Queensland Brides magazine (Rhonda still has a copy) was published twice a year at 86 pages. “I had sales people but I put a lot of the editorial together,” Rhonda said. “The magazine is still going and now we have expanded into holding wedding expos. We had 1500 brides-to-be come through the doors with their friends and families at our recent expo, 3000 people all together. Our wedding expos are huge.” Soon after the launch of Queensland Brides came Queensland Homes, a glossy magazine featuring distinctive Queensland properties, decor advice and interior designer columns, all accompanied by gorgeous photos to take readers inside some of the state’s most luxurious homes. “I wanted to focus just on Queensland

The first edition was a sell-out and it quickly went to a quarterly magazine.”

By then Rhonda’s three daughters were growing up and popping into the office after school, showing interest in the publishing business, but Rhonda was still a single mother, constantly worrying about the mortgage and never-ending financial demands. “It hasn’t been an easy road and I don’t know why I kept going, I just did,”

she said. “I never once thought of giving up.” The next magazine to come on board was Holidays for Couples, another high-end luxury gloss product featuring global destinations, resorts and properties with glamorous photos. “My daughter Tania was then married, had just come back from overseas and said ‘let’s get

Research on older workers A NEW study released by Australian Seniors Insurance Agency (ASIA)is part of The Australian Seniors Series and is the second instalment of an ongoing national survey to investigate the shifting attitudes and concerns affecting Australia’s over 50 population. Many Baby Boomers face considerable age-related barriers in the workplace, with more than two in five respondents admitting they have felt stuck in an employment rut because a career change, opportunities or promotions are unlikely due to their age. Delving further into these challenges, close to half of Baby Boomers said it took longer than six months to find a new job when making a new career move or returning to work. A startling one in six said it took them five years or more to find a job. In addition, almost 60

percent of Baby Boomers who are considering early retirement said this decision would be influenced by not enjoying work and feeling that it was not worth trying to re-skill at this stage in life. General Manager of Marketing and ASIA spokesperson Simon Hovell said: “Interestingly, amid organisations’ anxieties on the cost implications for healthcare with an ageing workforce, Baby Boomers are in fact three times less likely than Gen Y to use up all their sick leave each year. In addition, Baby Boomers typically take three days sick leave on average per year, which doubles for Gen Y’s at an average of six days.” The fiscal impact of this leave differentiation is significant, with Gen Y costing up to $2.8 billion more than Baby Boomers a year to the Australian economy.

The research also deflates perceived issues with hiring older workers in a modern workplace, including lack of adaptability and traditional skill sets. A sizeable 77 per cent of Baby Boomers adapt well to technological innovations, and 73 per cent are actively seeking training opportunities. “The findings point to what many organisations, academics and economists have known all along – Baby Boomers are a real asset to the workplace,” said Mr Hovell. Overall, Baby Boomers’ skill sets make a strong business case. Pensioners and gifting is a complex subject

I would like to take issue with advice from Anthony Jones of AMP (Brisbane Seniors, April 2016) that giving away up to a certain sum does not impact on pensions. I am aware the subject of gifting can be hard to explain briefly. However, the reverse of Mr Jones's advice is true - giving away up to the specified limit can increase one's pension due to the reduction in assets and any income derived from those assets. Exceeding the gifting limits does not impact on pensions as the excess gifts are not deducted from the asset figure used to assess the pension. A

person who gives away $20,000 in a year will experience no greater effect on pension (i.e., their pension will increase no more) than if they only gave away the allowable maximum of $10,000. Where they would be disadvantaged is that they no longer have that asset

earning interest in the bank. (The above applies to gifts of cash. Gifting a non-income earning asset, such as a car, could have an adverse effect on pension as the excess value of the gift is treated as a cash asset and deemed to earn income, which could reduce the pension as it had not previously been included in the assessment.) There are also implications for an assets/income test for entry into aged care. Yours sincerely Patrick O'Callaghan (Read reply on page 11).

Hurdles, highjumps and solutions

You must consider individual needs consider the impact to their overall bottom line. As each person’s situation is likely to be different, it is difficult to provide specific strategies and outcomes, however the statements you have

made are certainly valid. Our general approach is to ensure that people who want to gift funds for personal purposes (eg help with a wedding, mortgage etc) understand the gifting rules. We also

want to ensure people understand that simply trying to give away funds to enhance their pension benefit may not provide the best overall financial outcome for them. — Anthony Jones

Beware traps of raising funds with a loan against your home IN A recent newspaper, an article by Peter Bolitho suggested an option for seniors to raise funds was by a loan against their home. I would suggest great care be taken before completing this type of loan, for the following

reasons: I was executor of the wills of two good friends a few years ago, who had an equity loan from one of the big banks. They had negotiated a loan of $70,000 secured by the home they owned, payable on sale of the

property or paid by their estate. Sadly they both died over a period of 10 days. I then discovered that six years later the debt had doubled, the interest was 17 1⁄2%, which despite the bank being made aware of their deaths,

continued to charge the interest until their estate was finalised. In view of this information I could definitely not recommend this type of loan. There are many other options available. — G. Prince

One aspect of the article that has particular relevance today is Larry’s emphasis on the younger criminals being influenced and contaminated in unsegregated confinement. In Larry’s day, even at Boggo Road, the boys were segregated from the senior criminal class. This was accepted in subsequent years by both sides of the political divide here in Queensland, and a special prison for the youthful, vulnerable offender class was built and operated at Woodford. However, come the 1990s, the segregation was abandoned by the then Labor government. Congratulations Larry Campbell. — Tom King

CONGRATULATIONS for another excellent April edition. Of particular interest to me as a former warder/ prison officer was the Steve Rhodes article ‘Look Back at Boggo Road Jail’. Part of the time Larry was a resident at Boggo Road, I was one of his keepers. He was what I termed a ‘good crim’. This translates into being a man who accepts his punishment as a consequence of being caught and prosecuted for something outside lawful boundaries. Mr Campbell took it on the chin and was a responsible individual. It is apparent he reformed himself and improved his latent, and as I detected early on, leader’s potential.

Plans for the granny flat THE Brisbane City Plan applies to granny flats in residential zones. Below outlines how to check if you require planning approval from council and basic design requirements. An extension to an existing dwelling house in a residential zone for a granny flat is referred to in the City Plan as a secondary dwelling. It can be a maximum of 80sq m in size. If the granny flat is for a member of your household, you do not need to apply for council approval as long as you

meet the criteria in the Dwelling house code or Dwelling house (small lot) code. Small lots are less than 450sq m or for a rear lot less than 600sq m excluding the access way. You will need to lodge a development application if the granny flat is bigger than 80 square metres in size and if it is more than 20 metres from the main

WHAT YOU TOLD US

IN early 2016, the Queensland Government asked Queenslanders how our state could become more age-friendly. From more than 9000 responses, we heard that older people need access to transport, appropriate housing and employment opportunities. The government also heard that, as a community, we need to challenge the way we think about ageing. You said: ■ Employment of people should be skill based, not age based; ■ Treat older citizens as “people” not “the elderly”; ■ We need to break down the ageist attitude within our community; ■ Improve seniors’ understanding of computer technology through training and education; ■ Older people have

workplaces.

wisdom that can be drawn on and used to great advantage; ■ Transport is essential for connectedness of seniors to their broader community and services; ■ Provide more seating in public areas with shade to enjoy the outdoors; ■ We need affordable housing close to transport and community services; ■ Establish mentor programs in all facets of education and

Communities around Queensland, Australia and the world are embracing the age-friendly approach and making practical changes to be more inclusive of people of all ages. We would like: ■ Intergenerational programs to increase understanding and connections between students and older people. ■ Shops to have magnifying glasses on shelves to allow easier reading of product labels. ■ Employers to have programs for older workers that offer physical activity courses, flex-time and retirement advice. ■ Transport systems to have flexible routes, age-awareness training for drivers and buddy programs.

Engaging aged care Expression of interest for Engagement in Aged Care

COTA Q & A Q: What is COTA A: COTA is an abbreviation of our original name, Council on the Ageing. In 2009 it was decided to drop 'Council on the Ageing' and be known simply as COTA as we felt that the original name no longer accurately reflected that we work on behalf of people over 50. Today we no longer think of people over 50 as 'the ageing' and we now use the tag line 'for older Australians' to more accurately reflect our work. Q: How is the work of COTA Australia funded? A: COTA Australia receives government funding through the Health System Capacity Development Fund and is also funded by levies on each State/Territory COTA organisation. State and Territory COTAs receive funding through a variety of sources including membership. COTA Australia has also received specific funding through the then Department of Health and Ageing to facilitate consumer engagement in aged care reform. Q: Is there a COTA in every State/Territory? A: Yes, there is a COTA in every State/Territory of Australia; Q: How can I become a member? A: To support the work of COTA by becoming a member, visit http://www.cota.org.au/australia/

MY FRIEND and I were having a lively chat about our travel dreams, as you do when you reach a certain age, have finished raising a family and are more free to travel. “I love to get away a couple of times a year,” I said to my mate. “I always travel economy, keeps costs down.” “Ah, yes,” said the mate, but if you travel economy, your kids certainly won’t. They’ll be in business class...spending the inheritance you left them because you sat down the back of the plane.” That got me riled. I’d never thought of it that way. Like most seniors I want to leave my offspring a decent amount when I go, but hey, yes, why should they get the benefits of my hard work and travel business class on their inheritance. So, it’s up the front for

me from now on. Sorry, kids, your inheritance just took a dip. I am sure most airlines’ business class sections are gorgeous but let’s focus on Cathay. I’ve just flown from Australia to Europe and back and I’m feeling rested, not the least jet-lagged, and above all, I feel loved. Wines are generously given. On this leg of Cathay Pacific, a special promotion of wines from the Languedoc-Roussillon region in France, along with the usual list of premium wines from all over the world, made my eyes water with pleasure. Time now for the true pleasure of business class, that coveted thing that outweighs all the joy of the food, the wine, the movies, the warm nuts, the pamper bag. In one smooth movement you are laid back, feet up on the ottoman, ready to relax until you touch down in Paris, on a bed long enough for even the tallest of people. More information on Cathay Pacific, visit: www.cathaypacific. com.au.

much money. However, Queensland law requires that all deceased estates must be properly administered, no matter how large or small the estate. Common items that people do not realise form part of their estate include: ■ Sentimental possessions such as jewellery, artwork and photos; and ■ Unpaid wages and leave entitlements. In addition to setting out who receives your

assets your Will can also: ■ Designate guardians to take care of any of your children who are under the age of eighteen; ■ Detail arrangements for family pets; ■ Set out arrangements for what you would like to happen with social network profiles such as Facebook, Myspace, LinkedIn and Twitter; ■ Provide details of wishes for your funeral or cremation; and ■ Confirm your wishes regarding organ donation. It is advisable for

everyone to have a Will in place, regardless of their financial circumstances. ■ INALA & DISTRICTS SENIOR CITIZENS

The Inala Senior’s club was formed about 40 years ago and used to meet at the Elizabeth Bruce Hall. The original sign was returned to us ten years ago and displayed each week. The club is now held at the Inala Community Hall, Corsair Avenue, Inala, once a week on a Thursday from 10am. The club holds activities - bus trips, cent auction, raffles and occasional concerts. Some of the current members are getting older so we would like more members and you can also bring a friend along to the happy, friendly and caring club. Each week the club holds bingo and indoor bowls. The bingo equipment is computerised and brand new. Seniors week this year there will be a special bus trip. At the end of the year there is a free entry to the Lord Mayors Christmas Carols in the City. Also, end of year break up Christmas Lunch. ■ ROTARY BOWEL SCAN

The Rotary Bowelscan Program commenced on May 1 and will continue to operate until May 31. The program is designed to focus attention on the potential danger of contracting bowel cancer which, in its early stages, has few if any symptoms. Yet if detected early enough it is 90% curable. To help with this Rotary offers relatively cheap and new Bowel Scan test kits through many local

pharmacies in most areas of the Sunshine Coast and in some areas of North Brisbane. Unlike the kits used by Rotary in the past, the new kits have no dietary restrictions. Information can be obtained by contacting 1300 779 694. Online sales are available through www.bowels canqueensland.org.au

HEART disease is far too common in Queensland. We all know of or have heard about someone dying from a heart attack and sometimes we wonder how this could have happened? “He or she seemed so fit and well and it seemed to come out of the blue..” So what can we do to try and prevent early onset of heart and blood vessel damage? Unfortunately, you usually do not know that you have risk factors for heart disease because often there are no symptoms to warn you. So here is my checklist for reducing the risk: ■ If you smoke, then quit. There are now numerous programmes available through your local GP and pharmacy to help. ■ Get you blood pressure checked. High blood pressure does not usually cause any symptoms and so the only way to know if yours is elevated is to get

it measured. ■ Get your blood sugar level tested. Impaired glucose tolerance is a precursor for diabetes and again does not have any obvious symptoms. ■ Get your blood lipid or fat levels tested and make sure you know what your good and bad cholesterol levels are. ■ Be physically active and maintain a healthy diet. There is so much confusing and conflicting advice given about diet and exercise. Cut down on refined carbohydrates (sugars), saturated fats, salt and alcohol. Try to eat whole foods rather than processed foods. Aim to do 3–5 hours of moderate intensity physical activity or 1.5–2.5 hours of vigorous intensity physical activity each week and aim to do some muscle strengthening activities on at least two days each week. It is recommended to have these health checks from the age of 45 or from the age of 35 if you are from an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background. MONDAY, April 25, was Anzac Day and so it seems particularly apt we talk freedom. How much freedom have these freedom fighters really managed to salvage? When you consider a lot of the damaging consequences of seeing combat can happen in the mind it is no surprise to hear the freedom fighters are literally locked inside their own traumatic memories. In a report published by the US Department of Veterans Affairs at least 22 American veterans take their lives every day. It’s no secret that yoga can aid mental well being. And recent scientific studies indicate that yogic practices are very effective in the treatment of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). It is believed that, through the practise of all the eight limbs of yoga, as described by the ancient

River Glen Haven

sage Patanjali, it is possible to create new neurological pathways. On a physical level, yoga and freedom are simpler to explain. The great yin yoga pioneer, Paul Grilley, has some succinct logical things to say about the trajectory of ageing. He says all humans follow the same trajectory of aging but some faster than other. Hence the only way to die young is to slow down the aging process. But how? In the words of Ashley Montagu: “The idea is to die young as late as possible”. Grilley points out the ageing trajectory begins with birth. From the day we are born we become more yin-like. Yin represents stability whereas Yang represents mobility. By following the energy water ways of yin yoga, we can all head down that Yoga definitely is a key to dying young. I believe the yogic path has profound results in producing new neurological pathways. For more info. visit www.taraji.com.au Tara

■ MITCHELTON & DISTRICTS GARDEN CLUB

Fertilising and caring for orchids is the topic of the guest speakers, Margaret and Les Lobley, Thursday, June 2, when the Club meets at the Enoggera Memorial Hall, cnr of Wardell and Trundle Sts, Enoggera. It’s been said that orchids are hard to grow, but given the correct growing conditions and care, you’ll find that is not the case and orchid plants will flourish and produce a wonderful reward at flowering time. This month is the time to prune geraniums and to keep an eye on azalea plants which are forming buds for spring blooms. Watch for

the buds turning brown and dropping. This could be an indication of petal blight fungus, and early treatment with a fungicide should control that problem. We meet on the 1st Thursday of the month. Visitors and new members are most welcome. Meeting commences at 9.45am. Info Pat on 3356 1256.

■ REDLAND SPINNERS & WEAVERS

The annual Open Day, on Tuesday, 21 June, is the group’s highlight event. If you are interested in yarn and fibre or have a hankering to learn how to spin, come along and soak up the atmosphere. There will be a display and demonstration of antique spinning wheels; yarn, fibre, handmade soaps, embroidered goods, stationery, pottery yarn bowls and sheep mugs for sale; a fashion parade and more! Venue- Redland Performing Arts Centre, 2-16 Middle Street, Cleveland from 10am to 3pm. Info Shirley Graham on 3206 8967. Entry is $5 covers morning tea and an entry into the lucky door prize draw. ■ STAFFORD GARDEN CLUB

Our guest speaker for May is Marise Stephens and she will be talking on Zygo Cactus. Schlumbergeria is a small genus of cacti with six species found in the coastal mountains of south-eastern Brazil. Plants grow on trees or rocks in habitats that are generally shady with high humidity. In Brazil, the genus is referred to as Flor de Mai (May flower), reflecting the period in which they flower in the Southern Hemisphere. Like Poinsettias, the Christmas cactus is a short day plant. As the days get shorter its buds are formed. This is when most of the mistakes are made that delay its blooming or stop it

altogether. The number of questions asked about Christmas cactus is more amazing considering that the plant thrives on neglect. Weeks without water won’t harm it. In fact, too much care is dangerous to the plant. The Club meets on Thursday, May 19 at the OES Hall, Cnr Kitchener and Bohland St, Kedron. The ladies will have their usual trade table. Come at 9.30am for a cup of tea and a chat before the meeting. Visitors are always welcome. The meeting starts at 10am. For more information phone Gloria on 3355 4703 or Kaye on 3357 7660.

What is a senior move manager? THE saying “necessity is the mother of invention” means, roughly, that the chief motive behind the newest ideas or services is a need. Queensland’s senior move managers are delivering a new service for a growing market. Currently, 14% of Queensland’s population is aged 65 years or older. In the next 40 years or so, the number of seniors is anticipated to increase by 24% or 1.8 million people. This increase is approximately equivalent to the current populations of Brisbane, Ipswich and Logan combined. Such a dramatic change to our demographics means lifestyles, services and family expectations and responsibilities will change. For some, it’s happening already. The rise of the “sandwich generation” (a

generation of people, typically in their 30s or 40s, working full time, responsible both for bringing up their own children and for the care of their aging parents) is the driving force behind the growing demand for senior move managers. Why do people use a senior move manager? When older adults decide to downsize the family home and move to a smaller residence or

make a transition to a retirement home, it’s common not to have moved in 30, 40 or even 50 years. The thought of the organisation, project management and physical activity related to such a big pack and move is overwhelming for the entire family. Calling on a senior move manager who has the multifaceted skills and time to empathetically

arrange a move is an excellent solution. What does a senior move manager do? First and foremost, a senior move manager takes the stress out of transition and moving. The list of assistance a senior move manager can provide is exhaustive, but just some of the tasks they may undertake include: ■ Declutter and downsize ■ Organise waste and donations ■ Find storage and movers ■ Arrange cleaning and maintenance ■ Co-ordinate styling and real estate ■ Help with settling in and unpacking Contact Care to Move ■ 07 3810 8619 ■ support@ caretomove.com.au ■ caretomove.com.au

I’d never felt so helpless after falling... Advertorial

FOR two days last June I lay on the floor of my home of 42 years, in horrific pain, unable to pick myself up, unable to call for help, unable to feed myself, unable to make it to the bathroom, unable to determine just how injured I was. Not a single soul knew I was in trouble. I’d never felt so afraid. Never felt so ashamed and I’d never felt so helpless than I did during those 48 hours. I’d always prided myself on being able to take care of myself but I quickly realised just how vulnerable I was. Luckily for me, my story has a happy ending, I was thankfully found and given the care I needed. But the whole episode was traumatic. I didn’t know, during the 48 hours I was stranded, that I was going to be found in two days. Although I tried to keep a positive outlook, I considered the possibility that I might never get up off that floor! Afterwards I suffered from anxiety and panic attacks and didn’t like to be left alone. It put enormous strain on my family and we decided I

should move to a nursing home. This is just one of the true stories that inspires EMS to find solutions to keep people in their homes safely for longer. With the safeTcare model, our clients are monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. The device is the latest technology and more importantly simple to use. Feel a supercharge from superfoods Cancer Council Queensland health guru Katie Clift shares five superfoods that are super for your health and happiness. Superfoods, by definition, are nutrient-rich foods considered to be especially beneficial for your health and well-being. A well-balanced diet rich in superfoods will ensure you get the antioxidants, vitamins and minerals you need to stay energised, healthy and happy. They are readily available, delicious and affordable. Here are my top five: 1. Quinoa: This protein-rich grain contains all the essential amino acids your body needs to repair itself. With twice the protein content of rice, quinoa is also high in fibre, gluten-free and a very good source of B vitamins, calcium, magnesium and manganese. Add to salads, stir through a smoothie or bowl of oats, or add to protein balls. 2. Broccoli: Green

vegetables like broccoli contain phytochemicals to benefit the immune system and reduce inflammation. They are also high in fibre, folate, vitamin A, C and K. Steam your broccoli lightly or add raw florets to salads. 3. Blueberries: A nutritional powerhouse whether eaten fresh or frozen. Blueberries are very low in kilojoules but

high in nutrients and antioxidants. Research shows antioxidants in berries help protect our bodies from sickness and reduce oxidative stress. 4. Chickpeas: Chickpeas are an excellent source of vitamin B6, folate, fibre, protein, thiamine and potassium. The proteins in chickpeas, on average, are of higher nutritive

New political party offers ‘a mature voice’ MATURE-age Australians (from 18 to the 80s-plus) now have a new champion in their corner for the coming national election battles, in July or later. The Mature Australia Party, registered recently by the Australian Electoral Commission, has its sights on Senate and House of Representatives seats in at least five of the six Australian States. National President Terry Snell (Qld) said the party was processing endorsement applications from 15 prospective candidates, and expected more to join the bid in coming days and weeks. “We have definite starters in Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland – and we’re confident of securing spots in each State,” he said. “For the first time, maturees will have their own voice in this election campaign, and the Parliament, to ensure that they’re given the recognition and support they deserve. They won’t be ignored any more; we’ll make sure of that”. Queensland Senate candidate Jim Savage

(Sunshine Coast) said the party’s approach of basing its policies on the input, views and concerns presented by “the people” themselves – not vested interests and powerbrokers, like other parties – had raised tremendous interest Australia-wide. “The people are making their views clear, in no uncertain terms, and these are the policies and issues we’ll be taking to the people at the election,” he said. “Mature-age people with a range of major concerns, including pensioners, self-funded retirees, people in small businesses, hard-pressed young and middle-age family groups, the elderly, the disadvantaged, and the disabled ... they’ve all been discriminated against, ignored, or taken for granted by governments for far too long. “These are the specific interest groups in our communities that the Mature Australia Party will be giving a voice to. “The centrepiece of our election policy portfolio will be a ground-breaking taxation reform package.”

Simplifying future of retirement living A NEW company called Shine Retirement has emerged to assist retirees through the maze of retirement living and offer choice and advice on which village best suits a person’s individual requirements. There are multiple types of retirement living options. There is the traditional retirement village option incorporating a number of schemes under the one model - freehold, leasehold, loan-licence and company title. Then there’s the over-50s home parks which is becoming more popular with younger retirees. Some villages have exit fees, some offer residents the option of acquiring capital gains, some offer both. The terminology, pricing and options used in retirement living is different to normal real estate and so a retiree is expected to understand new concepts, terms and costs which is often new and foreign to most people. Times however are

LIFESTYLE COMMUNITY: IRT Woodlands in Kawana Forest at Meridan Plains. PHOTO: CONTRIBUTED

Lifelong care increasingly important the Sunshine Coast and has just opened a third, IRT Woodlands in Kawana Forest at Meridan Plains. According to IRT, Sunshine Coast seniors generally wait until their late 60s or early 70s to move into a lifestyle community, meaning you may need support sooner that you think. “In deciding whether lifestyle community living is right for you, you need to consider how that community can support you as your care needs change,” said IRT’s Queensland general manager Lance Taylor. “At IRT Woodlands, residents will be able to arrange for home care

services to their villa, but they also have the choice of an on-site, 60-suite care centre if they develop high care needs. “This means they won’t have to leave their IRT Woodlands family.” Mr Taylor says this gives people peace of mind. “People choose to live in communities like IRT Woodlands for the lifestyle,” he said. “We offer affordable, high quality living in a scenic coastal setting with top notch facilities like a community centre, pool, BBQ area, theatre room and gym.” For more information on IRT Woodlands, go to www.irtwoodlands.org.au.

Rotary bowel scan saves lives AUSTRALIANS participating in Rotary’s lifesaving bowel cancer awareness initiative will benefit from the inclusion of faecal immunochemical tests (FIT) in all Rotary-branded bowel screening kits this year. The tests are available in participating Australian pharmacies or on line at bowelscanqueensland. org.au from May 1. The program will see more than 120,000 FITs used as part of the Rotary Bowelscan programs this year across Australia. The FIT is one of the most effective and easiest ways to reduce the risk of bowel cancer. Gastroenterologist, Dr Howard Hope, said the national inclusion of the faecal immunochemical tests was an important next step for the already successful program. “Bowel cancer is the second most common newly diagnosed cancer in Australia, but it is treatable if diagnosed early,” Dr Hope said. “Rotary encourages people to take that all important test. “The test is based on

The right advice to help grow your nest egg

WORKING Australians have almost one-tenth of their salary added to their super each year through employer contributions. Yet many people aren’t embracing the benefits of super to grow a retirement nest egg. A recent study by MLC found two out of five Australians don’t think they will be able to fund their own retirement, and expect to rely on government support in their senior years. One in five people are pinning their hopes on a big inheritance to ensure their financial security. At present, 53% of Australia’s retirees rely on the government as a source of income, and given our aging population, it’s hard to see how this level of support can be sustained. This is why we are continually being urged to build a pot of retirement savings ourselves, and superannuation provides an ideal way. Super is lightly taxed when we’re in the

current financial year, or $35,000 if you were aged 49 or over on June 30, 2015. If your spouse is a low income earner (less than $13,800 annually) or not working, you may be able to claim a $540 tax offset when you make a contribution of up to $3000 to his or her super fund. Low to middle income earners can cash in on the government’s co-contribution scheme. If your income for the current financial year

WE HAVE a steady flow of inquiry at our office regarding aged care – it’s technically part of good Estate Planning and is commonly a daunting task for people. A typical scenario would be of an elderly family member who had been managing quite well with their day to day living and an event occurs that renders them in need of long term care. It may be a fall, a stroke, the onset of dementia, or some similar debilitating situation. Changes occurred in the structure of aged care several years ago that has made it more a “user pay” area. The new system on the surface looks difficult to work through but if you follow a process and make inquiry, it certainly isn’t insurmountable. Remember not to get baffled by the acronyms. If this ends up being thrown in your lap, just take a deep breath and

Low to middle income earners can cash in on the government’s co-contribution scheme. If you’re a PAYG worker, consider speaking with the boss about adding to your super through salary sacrifice. This is where you choose to have part of your before-tax salary paid into super rather than receiving it as cash in hand. If you don’t have much in super, salary sacrifice can fast-track your nest egg. If you’re self-employed, making contributions to super can provide a valuable tax deduction. You can claim a tax break for up to $30,000 of contributions for the

River Cruise in style

A kaleidoscope of Europe’s charms glide past your window Ann Rickard

IF EVER there was a holiday designed specifically for us mature folks, it would have to be river cruising. There are many reasons for this, more about them in a minute, but the top one would surely be: no children on board. We love children, most of us seniors are doting grandparents, but we don’t love the little tykes when they are running amok around the decks and lounges on a ship. River cruising is not designed for children, there are no facilities for them, they’d be bored. It’s all about us, and we are not going to feel guilty about it. River cruising suits those of us who enjoy the ease of being moved smoothly from one place to another, those who love to unpack just the once, who adore being pampered and wined and dined to the brim. Those who love a no-bingo or extravagant theatre policy, those who are more the gather-around-the-piano type. Avalon Waterways’ newest river ship, Imagery II, has just been launched on the Rhine, formally christened by “godmother”, New Zealand personality Judy Bailey.

It now awaits your pleasure. You are going to love this spanking new ship with its Suite Ship policy: two entire decks of roomy suites with marble bathrooms complete with L’Occitane products, and more space than any other ships cruising Europe’s great rivers. What you are going to love beyond all the many loveable details on board Imagery II, is the wall-to-wall windows in your suite, a whole wall that slides back to transform your suite into one large alfresco balcony and – this is luxury without measure – the bed faces the window. Think about that. You wake up each morning in a comfortable wide bed beneath a floaty white doona to lazily watch a kaleidoscope of Europe’s charms glide past your panoramic window. If you (or better still, your mate) has padded quietly to the elegant lounge at the aft of the ship, where a gleaming coffee machine will dispense any coffee style of your choice, and he brings it back along with a big home-baked cookie to enjoy in bed, well, you are going to be in holiday heaven aren’t you? And your exciting day hasn’t even started yet. The unprecedented

ships to keep up with demand. Avalon Waterways does not let its ships age. When they are only just past juvenile stage, they

are sold or sent off to ship graveyard. Hence, all Avalon’s long sleek river ships are modern and fresh. None more so than Imagery II. The decor is contemporary and restful with tasteful and luxurious object d’art and contemporary art works at every turn. The lounges and dining room are fitted with up-to-the-minute furniture with exquisite fabrics. On the expansive top open-air deck, the sun lounges beckon, and a

small spa sits beside a giant deck chess set. The chef even grows his own herbs in pots up on the deck. You will never be short of something exciting to do on Imagery II as her itinerary stops at some of Europe’s most beautiful cities, towns and villages. And the ship docks right in the heart of things. You have only to walk off (easy, no big gangway, just a flat walkway) to have Avalon’s private buses with local guides waiting a CONTINUED ON PAGE 33

At Lahnstein in Germany, we were taken to the Marksburg Castle where local guides led us through the vast and gloomy halls of this great castle and gave us vivid insight into life in the middle ages (very uncomfortable it was back then, no electricity or

Digging for dinosaurs

Fossils breathe new life into Outback Queensland Phil Hawkes

DINOSAURS have been in Queensland for a long time. Of course I speak of fossils, not real life (unless speaking of some of my contemporaries), and their existence has made Winton and the surrounding area internationally famous. The outback town’s impressive Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum of Natural History is a popular attraction but now there’s a new kid on the block. The fossilised bones of a Titanosaur, a previously unknown dinosaur, were uncovered in 2004 on a property near Eromanga, about 700km south of Winton. Named Cooper, it is the largest dinosaur fossil yet discovered in Australia. The humerus measures 1.5 metres in length and weighs more than 100kg. Since Cooper was discovered, George, Zac and Sid have joined

... It is the largest dinosaur fossil yet discovered in Australia. Eromanga’s growing dino family. Evidence of other large creatures, identified as Megasaurs, has also been found at nearby Eulo. Understandably, palaeontologists are very excited by these new discoveries and the Outback Gondwana Foundation together with the Queensland Museum has now opened the new Eromanga Natural History Museum (ENHM) to display these amazing fossils and run educational programs for tourists, school groups and scientists. It’s a well-curated exhibition managed by Robyn Mackenzie, owner of the property where Cooper was found by her 14-year-old son Sandy.

DIGGING IT: A couple of young visitors give exhibition curator Robyn Mackenzie a helping hand cleaning dinosaur bones at the Eromanga Natural History Museum. PHOTO: ROBYN MACKENZIE

Robyn said her son thought the bones looked “different” to the usual cattle skeletons and soon Queensland Museum experts were on site Eromanga is a small town better known for its opal mining and more recently, oil drilling with the area producing about

1.5 million barrels annually. But the fossil finds, and the older Living History Museum with its superb memorabilia have put the town firmly on the tourism map. A visit to Eromanga would not be complete without lunch or dinner at

the Royal Hotel where you’re likely to meet such characters as Giggles, an opal miner for many years and a teller of tall tales. You may even persuade him to take you out to his tenement to do a bit of fossicking. A good base for a visit to Eromanga is Quilpie,

just 108km down the sealed road, where you’ll find one of those country towns with all the services you’ll need, including a helpful Visitor Information Centre and Gallery … and a couple of really good coffee shops. CONTINUED ON PAGE 35

The magical town of Seventeen Seventy Taya Sweeney

ONE word comes to mind when thinking about the town of Seventeen Seventy…magic. Some of my greatest childhood memories are times I spent at this glorious sleepy town near Agnes Waters on the east coast of Queensland. This time I visited with adult eyes and the five-hour drive felt much shorter than I remembered.

The three-night stay included sleep-ins, snorkelling, lazy breakfasts, mid-day naps and afternoon fishing. On the second day I discovered it was butterfly season in the region, when 1770’s “butterfly walk” becomes a teaming hive of the gorgeous insects. I was surprised that what was advertised was what we received. Thousands of the fluttering creatures

danced under the shade of a dense canopy of palms. On our last day we visited the 1770 Headland. The sight was breathtaking, a contrast of strikingly blue ocean – crashing against deep orange and red rocky-cliffs. I know I’ll be visiting this historic town again soon, while my adult eyes are still able to see the magic.

Holiday hotspots far from Bali crowds Canggu is fast becoming the “it” place for Bali tourists

the pool and luxurious tropical surrounds at Fella Villa are the perfect place to escape Bali's heat and humidity. Jann Burmester

ONCE a sleepy fishing village surrounded by verdant green rice paddies, Canggu on the south coast of Bali is fast becoming the “it” place for tourists and expats alike. The rice paddies are still there, but now they’re surrounded by hundreds of villas, while dozens and dozens of trendy, organic cafes and restaurants have sprouted up like mushrooms after the rain. It’s busy, but there’s also an easy, relaxed beach vibe here and we

are far enough away from the madding crowds of Kuta and the traffic woes of Seminyak. Canggu draws a mix of people - from laid-back surfers - to chilled yogis, hipsters, families and backpackers. When conditions are right, the surf pumps along this 10km stretch of coastline at places like Echo Beach, and Batu Bolong. I’m in Canggu for five days and I’m staying at the stunning Fella Villa created by the founders of the iconic Australian swimwear brand Fella.

GREEN FIELDS: Despite the rapid development in Canggu, many villas, including Fella Villa, are surrounded by rice fields. PHOTOS: JANN BURMESTER

Inspired by the owners’ travels and art, the villa is located down a quiet gang (laneway) and much to my delight there’s a rice field opposite. With influences from Mexico and the exotic east, the Fella team has created a luxury, boutique indoor/outdoor, three-bedroom villa which features natural timbers, polished concrete floors and lush, verdant tropical gardens. There’s day beds and outdoor lounges, dozens of weathered, moss-covered pots, an art-filled living area, a Japanese-inspired pond with amazing lotus flowers

and koi fish swimming under a large frangipani tree, an open-plan kitchen and a sunken lounge which faces the green, slate-lined swimming pool. The luxurious bedrooms feature a black and white colour scheme and the outdoor bathrooms are simply stunning. With a large concrete wash basin, pots filled with exotic tropical plants, timber decking and views of banana trees, showering is a pure pleasure. And when you can tear yourself away from this elegant villa, there’s plenty to do.

With loads of popular eateries including Betelnut, Canteen, Old Man’s, Green Ginger, Deus, La Finca, La Laguna, Milk and Madu and Crate Cafe, you’re never short of stumbling upon your next gastronomic delight. And if shopping is your style, there’s a good selection of surf shops, upmarket clothing stores and homewares stores to keep you occupied for hours. For beach lovers, there’s sun lounges and umbrellas to rent and if you’re keen to surf, you can rent a surfboard from one of the many hire stalls

IF YOU GO: Fella Villa is located at Jalan Nelayan Canggu, Bali. Bookings are through Air B n B, or for more information email hello@fellavillas.com Prices start from $275 per night (for 2 bedrooms). Much to learn from

Barcaldine’s rich history is brought to life at night station owners. Now, 125 years later, a dramatic reconstruction of the seven-metre high tree stands outside the station where visitors are welcomed with tourism being an integral part of the Barcaldine Shire’s economy. Celebrations for the anniversary will be highlighted on by a town party and street parade on May 1 this year. Yet in 1891 the wool industry was the unrivalled economic pillar of the colony of Queensland. The 200-year-old ghost gum saw protesting sheep shearers mark the foundation of the Australian Labor Party. Striking shearers marched under the Eureka flag to put forward their protests against poor working conditions and low wages. In a 7.30 Report broadcast on ABC TV in 2009 historian Peter Forrest acknowledged the Tree of Knowledge was

THERE is one thing Outback Queensland offers apart from its well-known bush hospitality, the country air and big skies of a night … its history. Barcaldine Shire Mayor Rob Chandler sums it up well when he says: “We are Australia’s history .. Australia grew from inside out when it opened up the outback.’’ There are few better places to understand a chapter in Australia’s history than at the Tree of Knowledge in this town that was built on sheep. In 1891 the ghost gum directly in front of the railway station witnessed a divisive confrontation that threatened to plunge the nation into civil war as striking shearers stopped non-union labourers arriving by train to fill their jobs. The strike was a bitter campaign fuelled by lowering of shearers’ conditions by sheep

by workers at the former Queensland Department of Primary Industries. Several cuttings propagated from the tree before its death are now growing in Barcaldine, as well as Brisbane and at the National Arboretum Canberra. A new memorial on the site of the remains of the original tree won The Lachlan Macquarie Award for Heritage Architecture and a National Commendation for Public Architecture at the 2010 National Architecture Awards. To stand beneath the timber construction above the trunk and exposed roots brings an awareness of the struggle of those early workers and settlers. Chandler, who was born into a sheep and cattle grazing family, sees

tourism as the saviour of western Queensland. After leaving school he went shearing then ran the family station until extreme drought and a collapse in wool prices forced a change. He started a timber-cutting business then hospitality, first with a farmstay then a motel in town. As well as mayor he has been a long-time board member of the Outback Tourism Association, a prime motivator behind charity organisation Angel Flight and its annual

Outback Trailblazer event. “Tourism,” Chandler says, “is the future. “The drought is hurting everyone. Making visitors welcome is what it’s about. We have to make them feel they are part of the survival of the bush, which they are. “The Tree of Knowledge is one of things people have to do. “The fact you can see when the lights are on the shape of the tree as it was from 1896 is pretty special.’’ Two architects who designed the new tree

also refurbished the century-old historic Globe Hotel that reopened late last year as a multi-million-dollar community cultural precinct. Almost $2.5 million has been spent on the redevelopment of the iconic hotel, now known as The Globe Visitor Information Centre. The pub, which was built in 1910, was purchased by the Barcaldine Regional Council, and now includes an art gallery, function room and history room.

are certainly happening in Barcaldine. * The writer was a guest of Queensland Rail Travel and Outback Queensland Tourism

IN AN episode of Fawlty Towers, Basil is having renovations done to his Torquay hotel, but is having trouble with a cowboy Irish builder who previously had built him a wall but never finished it (I’m sure you are familiar with the episode). Basil telephones the builder and, with his signature glorious sarcasm, says: “I’ve waited for that wall about as long as Hadrian.” The builder on the end of the telephone obviously has no idea what Basil is referring to, so Basil says: “The emperor Hadrian. He built a wall...” Hadrian’s Wall is just one structure the mighty

Romans built 2000 years ago when they marched out of Rome to conquer and build all over Europe. It was the emperor Hadrian with 15,000 men who, in AD 122, built the wall across the top of England. It stretched for 129km. Now it is a UNESCO World Heritage site, perhaps the most major of all the many splendid attractions of Northern England, and you can walk it, or part of it, along the adjoining Hadrian Wall Path, taking in the stunning scenery of rolling fields and moorlands. Northern England is rich in other history. It is home to famous

lakes as well as historic castles, wild moors, handsome cities and stately homes, and perhaps most importantly for many visitors, it brims with cosy pubs and vibrant eateries. So much about this part of the UK is already familiar to us through television programs such as Heartbeat (filmed in the North York Moors). There is much to discover in Northern England and now that spring is here (or rather, there), make your plans and head over. Find out all you’ll ever need to know about Northern England at northernengland.com.au.

Film nights great for holidayers Helloworld offers specialised event to provide wealth of information to clients Helloworld Ipswich City Mall and Helloworld Capalaba’s owner/manager Suraj H Arachchige

THE main bonus of participating in a travel film night over a travel expo is that you are not overwhelmed with multiple suppliers for your preferred destination, holiday or tour. By coming along to a film night, you will be able to speak with our supplier ‘one-on one’ and ‘face-to-face’ which allows you the opportunity to speak in-depth with them utilising their first-hand knowledge and experience. The supplier is able to assist you with your questions or concerns. Film nights do not attract the masses of crowds that travel expos do – usually a maximum of 50 guests. Film nights are designed for unique products or a specific destination such as European River Cruising or Canada/Alaska Touring. You often receive special savings by attending the films nights which usually exceed those discounts received at travel expos. We invite you to come along to one of our film night events which

Travelling in a group has many advantages

YOU will see more, do more and learn more when you travel on an escorted small group tour. “Senior travellers should enjoy being seniors, relax and not let a holiday become hard work,” says Ken Osetroff, director of Toursgallery. Why go through the agony of staying in your own badly-chosen hotels, missing the train, getting lost and not knowing where to go? On an escorted tour your tour manager is with you every day to help overcome the worry and frustration of travelling in a foreign country. Forget about trying to find hotels, where and when to catch the bus, or trying to work out where the best shops can be found. Your tour manager can take you to special places known only to the locals, craft artisan’s supply shops, neighbourhood flea markets and rural villages. Group tours gained a bad reputation years ago when mass production travel companies crammed 55 people into a 55-seat bus. Today, Toursgallery guarantees that every person on their coach tours can have two seats, by limiting each group to between 10 and 15

guests. You are no longer just a number in a crowd, when your Toursgallery tour manager and local guides are able to provide you with personal attention. “We often add more visits than what is written in our brochure.” said Osetroff. “When possible, we do like to give our guests more than what they have paid for.” Most of Toursgallery’s guests are over 50 years of age, but younger people who appreciate the benefits of escorted small group travel often join these tours. For over 30 years Toursgallery has been creating and operating 15 exclusive journeys every year to Japan, Greece, USA, Iceland, UK and Costa Rica. These tours are designed for the discerning traveller who likes quality accommodation, meals and all entry fees included. Toursgallery’s Brisbane office is also a fully licensed travel agency, where guests can speak directly with the people who design each tour. Phone 1300 307 317 if you would like to talk about your travel plans. Japan Tours feature gardens, art, crafts, rural villages, cherry blossoms and autumn foliage.

Bid farewell to superstar

Rock Under Clock at Sandgate Town Hall

ANY connection you could make between the Queensland Police Service and rock ’n’ roll music would be highly unlikely. That is, until you catch the action at the Sandgate Town Hall on Saturday, May 14. Each has a beat but of a different kind. A special program feature, a musical romp, titled Cops and Rockers, will showcase the tales of legendary lawbreakers being put to song with some dramatic but hilarious theatrics thrown in. Joining Sandgate rock band The Sonics on stage to present these special musical memories from the 1960s songs such as Bonnie and Clyde, Jailhouse Rock, and I Fought The Law and The Law Won – will be QPS songstress Sergeant Nicky Steel and local Sandgate performer, Jim Hansen. Another program highlight in what will be

a jam-packed night of music nostalgia is titled Flower Power Under The Tower. This feature pays reverence to many of the hits from the Summer of Love era of the 1960s and rounds off a full evening of song, dance and laughter.

Lambert said: “Rock Under The Clock is a very important event in our fund raising calendar”. “It not only directly finances specific club projects but also helps to heighten our profile and public awareness of the organisation’s focus

LADIES’ NIGHT is the story of four unemployed mates, motivated by The Chippendales to form a male stripping act in order to make some fast cash. They pitch the notion to a local club owner and take tutelage from a kind-hearted dance instructor, in what women really want from a male stripper – and how to deliver it. Written in 1987 by Anthony McCarten and Stephen Sinclair, a decade before the film The Full Monty, Ladies’ Night is New Zealand’s most commercially successful play of all time. After eight sell-out tours of the UK, France’s premiere theatre award for comedy (The Molière Prize, in 2001) and being translated into 12 languages, this fun play is on its way back to Redland Performing Arts Centre for one night only. The challenge is to rearrange a crossword which has been broken into 25 sections. One letter has been given to get you started. Work out which 3x3 square fits in with that letter and write in the letters. You can also shade the black squares if you find it helpful. After completing the first 3x3 area, work out which square joins on to it, and continue until you have made a complete crossword.

Create ideal cheese platter

Tips to make your guests think you’re an aficionado Eleanor Ozich

B

EAUTIFUL, pungent and rich, there’s something about cheese I simply can’t resist. It’s not surprising I have a deep love for creating the perfect cheese board, one with varying textures, colours and flavours. Not only are tasting platters relatively simple to throw together, they can also be a conversation piece for your guests. Most will dig in with gusto, sharing opinions about which cheese they like, and those they don’t. Today, I share a few simple tips to create the perfect cheese board, one that will wow each guest and make you look like a true aficionado. ■ Choose a large platter that will fit a good selection of ingredients. I use a round wooden chopping board with a little piece of baking paper placed on top. ■ I like to keep it minimal and offer three different types of cheese of varying textures and age – you don’t want to overwhelm anyone’s palate. The first is a soft, creamy cheese such as brie or camembert. Mild,

whipped ricotta would also work nicely here. The second is something firm and aged, such as a sharp vintage cheddar, gruyere, or gouda. The third is blue vein, my most loved variety. Almost every cheese board includes a blue cheese, best known for its intensely strong and pungent aroma. I also recommend trying out cheeses made with different types of milk, like goat, or sheep milk. ■ Various other sweet and salty items work well as an accompaniment to cheese. Try cured goods such as prosciutto, salami or smoked salmon, salty morsels such as pistachios, candied almonds or good quality olives. Assorted dried fruit can include figs, medjool dates, prunes or apricots. ■ Dry cheese often likes something juicy, such as blood orange or green grapes, where as salty cheese begs for something small and sweet like blueberries or raspberries. Decorate with fresh honeycomb and a few sprigs of rosemary to create a platter that’s visually striking – let’s remember that people often eat with

SIMPLE: A tasty cheese platter is relatively easy to put together. their eyes first. ■ Always offer a different knife with each cheese variety. If guests help themselves to the cheese using just one knife, there is a high chance they might start tasting like one another.

■ Forget flavoured crackers and try something a little more interesting. I enjoy oat crackers for their mild, buttery flavour but good-quality sourdough or French baguette are also nice options. ■ Always bring your cheese

to room temperature before serving – cheese at room temperature reveals flavour subtleties that you wouldn’t otherwise taste if it were chilled. I like to pop it on the table at least one hour before guests arrive. ■ Lastly, I recommend

making as many selections as you can from local producers. I like to visit my local farmers’ market, or alternatively, Nosh, Farro or your local delicatessen will offer a beautiful variety of cheese and are always happy to help out.

the oven. Cook for 10 minutes, rotating every few minutes as the skin chars and the eggplant softens. Remove to a tray and slice in half lengthways. Scoop flesh into a sieve set over a bowl and allow to drain for 20 minutes. Preheat a barbecue or grill to very hot, season steak with salt and pepper and cook for 2–3 minutes per side for medium, then allow to rest. Finely chop the drained eggplant until it becomes slightly mushy and then place in a bowl with balsamic vinegar and lemon juice,

stirring until combined. Gently fold through tomato, cucumber, parsley and half the pomegranate seeds. Season with salt and pepper. Serve with remaining pomegranate seeds on top. Tips To remove pomegranate seeds, start by cutting the pomegranate in half. Then, gently break off pieces of pomegranate and ease the seeds out. Try roasting a whole scotch fillet and carve to serve. Brown the roast in a pan then transfer to oven at 160C for one hour or until it reads 60–65C on a meat thermometer.
