WELCOME to our June edition. This month we spoke to the much-loved Maggie Beer. When I was considering the editiorial qualities that would define our new-look seniors publication, I decided on diverse, down-to-earth and informative and I believe

Maggie Beer exudes all those qualities – in bucket-loads. This week our Brisbane starwoman is Peter Hackworth. Hello, where would Brisbane be without this amazing woman who elegantly and energetically ushered the ‘old’ Brisbane into the ‘new’ Brisbane. At 80-years-young, Peter does it for me, she is a richly coloured, multi-layered inspiration. To me she defines our publication’s ethos of: “Embracing Aging.” — Gail

Peter Hackworth – always colourful.

Seniors 3

Peter Hackworth and her life made rich with friends, travel and work

Peter made the cat tango Ann Rickard speaks to a senior who has the energy and outlook of a junior

At 80 YEARS old, Peter Hackworth says: “I don’t stop,” she said. “Working is good for you.” Peter (yes, that is the correct spelling, her mother was convinced she was having a boy and stuck to the male version of the name) is the founder/operator of some of Brisbane’s most lively and enduring markets. . Now known as Brisbane’s First Lady of Markets, Peter is an entrepreneur extraordinaire, a woman way ahead of her time now, just as she was decades ago. She introduced coffee culture to Brisbane back in a time when most people thought coffee began and ended with a jar of Pablo. As a young 22 year old, she opened restaurants such as a European bistro and jazz club, an American-style diner, two French restaurants and then the Cats Tango restaurant complete with Arabian-themed palm reading, belly dancing and exceptional dining. Peter, known for her flamboyance and eccentricity, launched her craft and farmers’ markets with the help of artist friends. Her longest running markets including Riverside and Southbank have paved the way for some of Brisbane’s newest such as Kelvin Grove and Boggo Road. Her markets are not just about buying food, clothing, jewellery and artefacts, they are destinations in themselves – vibrant, colourful places with street performers,

LIVING THE DREAM: No pills or vitamins is one of Peter Hackworth’s secrets to a long life.

musicians, entertainers, children’s activities and an ever-evolving food culture that all brings rich life to a city that is very dear to Peter’s heart. “The Riverside Market has been going 28 years but has had to move from place to place because of development and construction of buildings. Now it is in the Botanical Gardens and no-one can build anything there.” The relatively new Eat Street Markets, set on an old disused container wharf with market stalls inside empty containers have been a big success. “People come with dogs and prams, grandparents

come with children, it’s a good family atmosphere,” Peter said. “They (markets) started because I was contacted by the (local) government first to ask if I would do something to that side of town. “We negotiated for a couple of years, but it was so windy there, anything would blow in the river. We had to do it with something heavy, so the idea for the containers came. It is the place where the original container ships came in. Containers won’t blow away. “I took in two friends, Jackie McDonald and John

Stainton and we started the markets in containers. It’s been going two and a half years and thousands of people come.” The wide variety of international food and festive ambience with is trees, fairy lights and music, make the Eat Street Markets a mini phenomenon in a city that is, just like Peter Hackworth herself. Her formidable energy

and positive thinking are infectious. A good night’s sleep after a glass of cognac, an avoidance of doctors, a passion for reading and a zest for life keep Peter Hackworth young at age 80. “I sleep seven or eight hours solidly,” she said. “My secret is never to go near doctors. I don’t take pills, don’t take vitamins or anything else. I just use common sense.

You can keep your energy up if you have the motivation and the discipline. I don’t have face treatments (Botox, fillers) I buy good (face) cream from one of my marketeers and that’s it. I do have a good hairdresser. You absolutely have to have a good hairdresser. “And you must never think you are old. I am 80 but I am not old.”

Maggie’s tips for healthy eating USING butter over margarine is always Maggie’s recommendation because of potentially harmful trans-fats. If you find that butter is too difficult to spread, try blending it with a little extra virgin olive oil to keep it softer straight from the fridge. ■ Extra virgin olive oil is a great choice for everyday cooking, salad dressings and roasted vegetables or meats, not only for its full flavour, but also for it’s well documented health benefits.

Extra virgin olive oil is a great choice for everyday cooking, salad dressings and roasted vegetables or meats ... ■ Using all full fat milk and yoghurts adds to everyday protein intake but also has the added benefit of leaving a feeling of being fuller for longer. ■ Coconut in all its guises offers wonderful health benefits; adding coconut water or extra virgin coconut oil on a daily basis helps boost the immune system enormously. ■ Alternatively, for those wanting to reduce sugar intake, fresh coconut water is a wonderful option, adding vital electrolytes and also offering flavour beyond plain water. ■ To increase further hydration, try adding a slice of lemon to plain or sparkling water.

Crusader Maggie’s vision for aged care

Foundation is putting good food and top chefs in care JIM FAGAN

MAGGIE Beer has a recipe for keeping folk in aged care happy and contented - flavoursome, nutritious meals, served in pleasant surroundings. She started her Maggie Beer Foundation - A Good Food Life for All - in May 2014 and it is now providing benchmark best practice in many of Australia’s aged care homes. The 71-year-old entrepreneur will be in Brisbane this month to conduct cooking demonstrations at the Regional Flavours Festival on July 16-17 at South Bank and in an exclusive interview from her home in the Barossa Valley she told Seniors, “I will take the chance to talk up the foundation while I’m there.” Maggie’s first became interested in 2010 when she was named Senior Australian of the Year and asked to speak in Tasmania at a conference of aged care leaders. “I did my research into a lot of facilities and, while I saw some wonderful things, I also saw some terrible things at places where the quality of food didn’t count. “Everyone has the right to a good meal every day. I’ve had good food all my life and to me the greatest gift everyone should have is the gift of a life of good food. It’s not just

sustenance, it’s pleasure.” She described how she approached the then Federal Government with the idea that they find the best aged care exponents across Australia and see what they were doing to deinstitutionalise food. “There was a lot of interest but no money. I knew I had to do something so I started the foundation. So far we’ve managed to get a TAFE

course with eight different components of specific instruction in aged care and two master classes each giving grants for 30 cooks and chefs in aged care facilities. “We bring in the experts and the chefs then go back their homes where they are looking after 50 to 300 people and so it becomes a movement. “Flinders University in Adelaide did an evaluation before and after the

fantastic.” Her vision of the ideal aged care facility, large or small, country or city, as one that not only feels like home but needs to be the home of the person who is in it. “I see it as bringing people around the table enjoying a lovely outlook, conversation and a really good meal. Pleasure, nutrition, conversation, all the things that should be there.”

Studies prove the need for meal improvement

Seniors 5

Leaders in Comprehensive Sleep Care

Better food for better life

DIETITIANS, chefs and nutrition experts throughout the country are working together to ensure that fresher, healthier meals are served up to aged care residents. Gold Coast studies have found that more than half of aged care residents are malnourished – a figure borne out at a national level. Two years ago, when The Lantern Project was launched, that figure was up to 80%. Project founder and dietitian Cherie Hugo, as part of her PhD studies at Bond University, set out to improve the food served up to residents in aged care. After 15 years of working with the elderly, she had a desire to see food become a part of the day elderly residents looked forward to. “It should be a highlight

of their day and at the moment it is not always. “It is a complex problem that goes beyond the food itself,” Cherie explained. “If someone is undernourished, they are more likely to be depressed, have falls, pressure areas and not recover from wounds or infection, so the ultimate goal is improving quality of

life.” The Lantern Project has high-profile supporters, including Maggie Beer, Simon Bryant and Peter Morgan-Jones, and The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation. Anyone interested in The Lantern Project can contact Cherie Hugo via email at cherie@ thelanternproject.com.au.

Author has big story to tell you COLIN Dillon never dreamt he would write a book even though he had an explosive story to tell. As the first indigenous policeman in Australia, Colin was also the first person to testify in the Fitzgerald Inquiry. Over the course of his 40 year career in the Queensland Police Force, Colin took a stand against corruption and worked tirelessly to improve the relationship between police and the indigenous community. But it came at a great personal cost. He suffered years of threats and harassment, but always stood firm in his belief that shining a light on corruption not only exposed wrongdoing but

empowered those who behaved honestly. “I honestly didn’t think I had anything to make a book,” Colin said. “But a couple of journalist friends kept at me, telling to write a book as my experience formed a very important part of our state’s history and the role I played in it. They said ‘you have a unique background, being the first indigenous person to join the mainstream police force not only in Queensland but in the entire country’. Colin’s book, Code of Silence, has just been released and is an explosive account of his experience in the years leading to the Fitzgerald Enquiry, years of vice and

police corruption that were more scandalous than any Hollywood film. Colin was also the first serving police officer to voluntarily appear before the Fitzgerald Inquiry in 1987 and at the time was a lone man standing. “The Fitzgerald Inquiry had made a call for honest police to come forward and they never got any response,” he said. “So I volunteered. I said I was happy to tell them what I had experienced

firsthand. I didn’t think the Inquiry would go anywhere at that stage. But a man came to my home on a Sunday night at 8pm, unannounced, said he was a junior counsel assisting, and said there were many others who had come forward and it would be good for me to take the stand to flush out the system. That was an outright lie. I was on my lonesome.” Colin’s evidence was instrumental in eventually

sending some police, including Police Commissioner Terry Lewis and politicians, to jail. “I was told by one of the senior barristers at the inquiry that my evidence had created a watershed, the dam had burst,” Colin said. ■ CODE OF SILENCE is published by Allen & Unwin and is the incredible true story of Colin Dillon, one of the most significant men in Queensland’s history.

Ensure super is sustainable: AIR Objective of Superannuation System,” Queensland president Bernie Treston said. “It is critical this objective reflects the position for those who now, and in the future, self-fund their retirement and it reflects the need for improved and increased self-sufficiency in retirement,” he said. “AIR members are seeking a reassurance that the impact on those who will be most affected by any change to the operation of the superannuation system (ie those who self-fund their retirement or plan to

do so on the basis of current understandings) are specifically considered in the determination of this important objective.” AIR proposes the adoption of the following definition: “To enable Australians to have a sustainable and self-managed income stream in retirement that will adequately support a comfortable and active retirement lifestyle”. Mr Treston said key considerations should be self-sufficiency and the need for self-managing assets and investment strategies to generate

retirement income streams. This may be done via self-managed superannuation or by using an industry or retail superannuation fund but with no government involvement in specifying the detailed management of an individual’s assets and investments. Government needs to manage the activities, risks and fees charged by industry or retail funds. Rules need to be developed to underpin the objective and operation of the superannuation system. ■ Inquiries to Bernie Treston on 0424 615 083.

Breaking with the traditional youth-obsessed fashion industry conventions, the British department store is featuring a 100-year-old model in an ad to align with Vogue’s century anniversary magazine. BE THRIFTY AND THRIVE NICKY NORMAN UPCYCLING is a fun and innovative way to reuse materials and reduce your carbon footprint. The beauty of upcycling is saving - saving dollars, saving waste and ultimately saving the planet. We all talk about making the world a better place - well here is one way we can make a personal contribution. Take your time, plan the project and perhaps you can join up with neighbours, friends or family to complete the job. Upcycling can work well as a group project as the old saying goes: “The more the merrier.” Through clever repurposing or giving an unused or possibly discarded item a second life and new function, we are helping to save the world’s resources and keeping down the landfill. ■ UPCYCLING is the opposite of downcycling, which is the other half of the recycling process. ■ DOWNCYLING involves converting materials and products into new materials of lesser quality, upcycling adds quality. ■ LOOK around your home or garage for some inspiration, starting small to begin with. A common household item such as a glass jar is perfect.

■ BE sure to save your empty food jars for future projects. Give you jar a good clean and get your supplies ready. ■ GET creative and think of how your item could be improved and more practical. There are many ideas to give your glass jar a new lease on life. ■ PAINT or decorate your jar with a ribbon and add some fresh flowers for a vase. ■ ADD a tea light candle in the base for a simple lantern effect. ■ MELT some soy wax and add a wick and a little essential oil for a scented candle. ■ MAKE some jams or chutney and give to family or friends (keep for some special festive occasions.) ■ KEEP leftover coffee grinds until you have enough for a homemade skin exfoliate. ■ ADD an old soap dispenser pump to a lid by screwing a hole in it and securing with adhesive glue, creating your own soap or moisturiser dispenser. ■ MOST items to get your project started should be on hand. Take a look around and find your unused paint, ribbon, string, glue. For larger projects you may require: a hammer, nails, drill, and old timber. Some items like an old timber crate or pallet can be transformed into a coffee table, bench sit or vertical garden. ■ BE inspired, repurpose and reuse. Happy Upcycling!

and stout. You can use empty PET bottles from soda water or mineral water or coke, nothing that leaves a strong residue in the bottles for wine and bubbly drinks such as ginger beer or cider. These bottles can also be reused in your next batch. ■ CLEANING the bottles is very important. Brew cleaner is available at home brew shops/online, etc, and dry the bottle if not used straight away as they can go mouldy. ■ KITS are the easiest way to make home brew

for your first time so you have all the ingredients together to start with. You will also need a hydrometer, about $15, to check the alcohol levels. ■ ONCE you have your bottles, decide what type of home brew you want and equipment you need to use. It all depends how much you want to invest. ■ Good quality water from the tap is ok (if it tastes ok) or you can use filtered water. ■ Join a home brew club in your area for tips and support. Happy brewing!

Longevity and breathing Establishing control over the central nervous system

TARAJI JOURNEY THERESE AHERN HANDS up who wants to know the secret to a long healthy life? It’s simple: “keep breathing as long as you can”. Breathing and the nervous system There is a huge body) of

research that examines the strong relationship between effective breathing, vitality and longevity. That’s it; careless breathing can result in a significant shortening of the lifespan. How? Why? Because vital capacity is the most accurate long term predictive marker of aging that we posses. And what is vital capacity? Vital

capacity is the maximum amount of air a person can expel from their lungs after they have taken their biggest ever breath. Conscious control over death: This would have to be the greatest longevity party trick imaginable. To do so would involve getting control over the involuntary nervous system.

OVER 50s ACTIVE LIFESTYLE RESORTS

Most ordinary folk have no intention of trying to get control over the involuntary nervous system. However this is not the case for ridgy didge yogis. So what would this conscious death involve? It is believed by using Pranayama (breathing) a man can control the involuntary nervous system and stop the

Freecall 1800 279 782 www.livinggems.com.au

natural decay of the material body. This is achieved by putting the involuntary nerves (of the heart, lungs and other vital organs) to rest periodically just like what happens with the voluntary nerves in sleep. After such rest using Pranayama the involuntary nerves become reborn. According to the great sage Sri Yukteswar:

“As after sleep, when rest has been taken by the voluntary nerves, man requires no help to awaken naturally; so after death also, when man has enjoyed a full rest, he awakens naturally to life in a new body on earth.” For more info or to find out schedules and places of my yoga lessons. IT is a bold author who makes some of her leading characters aged in their 70s…even 80s and 90s. Even bolder to base one of her characters in a nursing home. But Queensland author and now a rising star of women’s fiction, Josephine Moon, is bold. She learnt to be after being rejected more than 100 times for manuscripts she wrote over 12 years. “I have been rejected by every publishing company in the world,” she laughed. “I kept a spread sheet of all my rejections and when it got to 100 I deleted it. It was too depressing.” Josephine’s first act of daring came randomly one morning after 12 years of rejection. “I woke up and something said to me, contact Monica

The jar: it’s my nemesis SNAPSHOTS OF LIFE ANN RICKARD ann.rickard@apn.com.au

ONE of our lovely Seniors Newspaper readers emailed me suggesting I write a column about the conspiracy to kill off us seniors by slow starvation. While most of us enjoy a conspiracy theory, this one might be a bit much. And while I can’t really believe our manufacturers and producers are out to kill us oldies, it’s worth giving the theory an airing. It is death by the inability to open a bottle top, unscrew a lid or operate a can opener. This one has crept up on me over the years. Where once I had no trouble with my big hands and strong wrists to wrench the top off a jar of pickled onions and dive in, now I need to cry for help

(or give up picked onions, a far better alternative) to achieve this small task. Any jar now poses an insurmountable problem for me. From the raspberry jam jar to the chutney jar to the humble peanut butter jar, I am defeated by them all. “Buy one of those super gadgets especially made for silly old people who can’t open jars,” I can hear you say. I already have one. In a fancy red colour. It looks like an old-fashioned bottle opener but it is all modern moulded plastic stuff. You put it on top of the jar lid, press down until you hear a pop noise and then the lid should come off easily. Not so. At least not for me. Whenever I am confronted with a jar lid, I do give it a go first, and then raise my head to the heavens and shout: “Why is everything so difficult?” Fortunately I live with someone who has bigger hands, stronger wrists

and more patience than me. But for those who live alone it is a question of going into the neighbours with your jar of gherkins or going without. And you don’t want that, do you? It is the same with can openers. Thankfully most cans now come with a ring pull and even I with my weak old hands can manage that, but the ring-pull-less can (coconut milk, big culprit) that requires a can opener, forget it. My feeble and almost arthritic hands can no longer turn a can opener. Cans and jars and lids are now my enemy. But here’s the puzzling thing… no matter how difficult I find a jar, lid or can to open, I have never once been unable to get the cap off a wine bottle. They come off with just a delicate twist. A champagne cork poses no problem either. I can’t explain this phenomenon, but I don’t question it.

MITCHELTON AND DISTRICTS GARDEN CLUB

THURSDAY July 7, Bonsai is the topic of the guest speaker, Peter McCloskey. On the first Thursday of the calendar month, the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club meets at the Enoggera Memorial Hall, corner of Wardell and Trundle Streets, Enoggera. The hall is close to public transport and accessible by wheel chair. The meeting commences immediately after morning tea, which is served at 9.45am. Visitors and new members are most welcome. For more information call Pat, the president, on 3356 1256. The word, Bonsai, resulted from the combination of two Japanese characters -BON, meaning a rather shallow tray-like pot, and SAI, meaning to plant. The origin of the art of Bonsai, which is associated with both China and Japan, is lost in the mist of time, but there is evidence it was practised before the 13th century. At the beginning of the 19th century, the works of painters and poets featured Bonsai. Then, focus was given to the rugged, gnarled lines of miniature trees. However, CONTINUED ON PAGE 18

FROM PAGE 17

in recent years the natural beauty of trees and shrubs has been expressed in miniature through Bonsai. The age of a Bonsai used to be an important factor. There are existing trees that have been potted on, which could be 500-years-old. Nowadays, just the impression of age is sufficient and a plant propagated from a cutting off a well-established bush or tree may adopt the age of its source. Protected areas outdoors are ideal for Bonsai plants which are not good for growing indoors, but a few days indoors will not harm them. For special occasions, a Bonsai would add interest to the décor, especially if it was in flower. Some suitable subjects to bonsai are Azalea, Gardenia, Myrtle, Variegated Box, Bougainvillea, fruit trees (Cumquat, Lemon), Maple, Juniper, Pomegranate, Tea-tree and Wisteria. June is a busy month for the gardener, who should prune young fruit trees to develop a strong branch framework, or thin out the buds on camellias to leave one or two flower-buds in each cluster to let the remaining buds blossom

into larger blooms. Always dip your secateurs in bleach or methylated spirits before pruning the next subject to prevent the spread of disease. It’s not too late to plant seedlings for winter vegetables – cauliflower, broccoli, onions, peas, celery to mention a few. Herbaceous perennials may be lifted and divided at this time too. Bare rooted roses will be on sale but it would be better to delay purchasing these until towards the end of the month or July to avoid winter’s strong westerly winds damaging new shoots.

STAFFORD GARDEN CLUB

IN April we had another wonderful bus trip. We stopped at the beautiful Logan River Parklands then at Bahrs Scrub we visited Viola’s Patch, a large, gently sloping garden that includes rainforest and cottage

garden areas. Then we visited Dallas Kampe’s spectacular tropical garden at Mt Cotton. Two wonderful nurseries ensured that we came home laden down. Our guest speaker for June is Charlie Cacciola, who migrated from Sicily in the 1950s and grew up in New Farm with a backyard full of fruit and vegetables. After a 40-year career in business he decided to follow his passions for writing and country music.

Charlie has been a guest speaker on social issues. The Club meets on Thursday June 16 at the OES Hall cnr Kitchener and Bohland St, Kedron. The ladies will have their usual trade table. Come at 9.30am for a cup of tea and a chat before the meeting. Visitors are always welcome. The meeting starts at 10am. Info call Gloria 3355 4703 or Kaye 3357 7660.

For something a little different, as a June excursion, members will enjoy a trip to the races on June 22 to celebrate the Spring Carnival being run at Eagle Farm. There has been an extensive renewal carried out costing millions of dollars so there will be great interest in what changes have taken place since members last paid a visit. It will be a chance for those attending to wear their finest and share in a very enjoyable outing. Members are reminded that nominations are required at the June meeting for all committee positions for the branch with the Annual General Meeting timed for July 20 when all positions will be declared vacant and expressions of interest will be called for. Current President Charles Achilles expressed his pride in the strong success being enjoyed by the branch and he is mindful that this will carry on throughout the remainder of 2016 if there is good support by members at the Annual General Meeting.

If that wish is to go on a cruising holiday, then we’ll do our very best to make that happen.” Zion staff have undertaken significant preparations ahead of the cruise to set the scene for an enjoyable holiday. THE prostate is a small gland that forms part of the male reproductive system. Its main role is to produce semen which is the fluid that feeds and protects the sperm. The prostate sits under the bladder and forms the first part of the tube that carries the urine from the bladder through the penis, and the size of the prostate slowly increases with age. The growth of the

prostate is influenced by the male hormone testosterone and as it grows it can begin to effect the flow of urine. BPH (or benign prostate hyperplasia) is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate which causes lower urinary tract symptoms such as voiding problems (slow stream, urine dribbling etc) or storage problems such as urinary frequency and urgency and multiple trips to the toilet during the night. It is not life threatening but it can have a major effect on quality of life. Prostate cancer occurs when cells within the prostate grow and divide

abnormally so that a tumour forms. Excluding skin cancers, prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in Australian men with nearly 20,000 men being diagnosed each year. Fortunately most prostate cancer cells grow very slowly and may not cause any problems, however some cancers are more aggressive and can spread to other parts of the body. If you have any concerns about your prostate please see your GP. For further information visit www.drmichael gillman.com.

Advertorial VERY few seniors notice that their dietary requirements change with age and as a result, they could be unknowingly malnourished, underweight, or increasing their risk of chronic disease. Not only is it increasingly a concern for the aging population, but there are few effective solutions to assist the elderly in turning their health around and preventing malnutrition. Most seniors strive to stay at home independently for as long as they possibly can – but this could in fact be their undoing. People aged over 65 require foods high in protein, energy, and nutritional value to ensure for optimal health and wellbeing. Having access to, or cooking their own healthy and well-balanced meals each day can prove

People aged over 65 require foods high in protein, energy, and nutritional value to ensure for optimal health and wellbeing. difficult for seniors at home on their own, which often leads to malnutrition and poor health. Moving into a care facility with staff preparing meals daily is not necessarily the answer either, with studies showing up to 80 per cent of elderly people in aged care are in fact malnourished themselves. Fortunately, the solution is simple – seniors stay at home where they want to be, and have wholesome and healthy meals delivered right to their

doorstep. While the nutritional needs of over 65s can be highly variable, seniors can have peace of mind knowing they’re meeting their daily dietary requirements with Gourmet Meals. Gourmet Meals has a varied menu filled with great tasting meals that are nutritionally balanced, calorie controlled and just like home cooking. Our meals are snap frozen in order to retain all their freshness, nutrients, and flavours. They go straight from the pot to the blast freezer to eliminate the need for added preservatives, flavours or colours. All of our meals are free from gluten and additives, and the act of freezing simply leaves the goodness intact. Check out our menu today and discover what can be delivered straight to your door. Help pooch stay warm this winter PET OWNERS ADVISED TO CHECK THEIR DOG’S FUR COATS

AS WE prepare for a potentially serious flu season, we are reminded not to forget your pets who may also be longing for winter warmth from the cold. The winter months are the most common time for sickness in animals and pet owners are being encouraged to take precautions to ensure their dog’s fur coats can

withstand the cold temperatures. Dogs Queensland General Manager Rob Harrison said although some dog breeds will grow a thick layered fur coat for the winter months, other dogs may lose fur due to shedding. “A dog’s fur is important in keeping its body warm and maintaining an attractive coat which is why it can be difficult to see your pet suffer from seasonal hair loss,” Mr Harrison said. “We have heard of

cases where it can have a drastic effect on a dog’s appearance, leaving bald spots and patchy spots all over their body. “Unfortunately, this issue is sometimes overlooked by pet owners who forget that their pets also feel the cold and require protection from cold weather.” Mr Harrison said animals are used to shelter and the warmth it brings, therefore not equipping them for low temperatures can lead to illness.

Build muscle at any old age

“DON’T get around much... any more.” If this is your song, think again! Certainly, balance and muscle strength decline with age and can have disastrous consequences. But it’s never too late to improve both. We can help ourselves to remain independent. It’s easy to make excuses, I’m too tired, too old, too fat, too lazy. If you want to change your life, even at 90 it’s possible to improve your leg muscle strength. It may still be possible to maintain or regain your balance and live the life you want. Every year, one out of three people aged 65 and over has a fall. A few simple exercises can help reduce your risk of falling

and keep you independent longer. Try standing on one foot for 10 seconds while waiting for the kettle to boil. For active people, most outdoor activities, Tai Chi and yoga are excellent for both leg strengthening and balance. For those less active or

DEMENTIA Design is a set of guiding design principles, which improve the ease of interpretation or usability of a physical environment by a person with dementia. It’s vital to understand that people with dementia undergo brain changes that may lead to changes in perception of what they hear, see, feel and understand in comparison to someone without dementia. Acknowledging these changes makes Dementia Design highly pertinent to nursing homes, where statistics indicate 50% of residents are affected by dementia. As an overview, Dementia Design guides us to: ■ Desire nursing homes with a domestic scale and feel, where, for example, the living areas and furniture arrangements encourage intimate gatherings and conversations, as you would have at home. ■ Apply visual

strategies such as colour contrast to either highlight or conceal. Lounges and armchairs that contrast to the floor and walls and perhaps have contrasting scatter and seat cushions have been demonstrated to reduce falls. ■ Have seamlessness between changes in flooring material by use of the same colour and eliminating thresholds, including from indoor to outdoor.

■ Control auditory stimuli with soft furnishings and fabric wall panels. ■ Provide safe and meaningful outdoor spaces with benches in shaded areas and opportunities such as raised gardens and rotary clotheslines. Benefits to downsizing and living minimally If you enjoy saving money, energy and resources, the Senior Move Managers at Care to Move have these seven suggestions to start living a “minimalist life”. 1. Save money and space – reduce frivolous spending Downsizing helps prioritise your life. The more space you have, the more desire to fill up with stuff. When downsizing, you only buy what you can afford, financially and spatially. 2. Living large leads to stress… make it small and simple Living in a larger home often leads to greater stress, cleaning, maintenance and cost. Free up your time for leisure activities, family, rest and maybe loving your home more than loathing it. 3. Save on your electricity… smaller home equals smaller bills A big home means big energy costs. A smaller homes delivers a lower energy bill in the warmer and cooler months. 4. Free up your lifestyle for travel, hobbies and friends… Travelling can be less of

hassle when you need to leave your home for extended amounts of time, especially if you downsize to an apartment or unit from a stand-alone house. 5. Open a new chapter Downsizing your home can be a new chapter providing a way to start a new life. Consider opting for a smaller home that could have less upkeep. 6. Concentrate on style and design Beautiful design is about how to functionally use a space, while still being inspired to enjoy the room. Less is more and quality vs quantity resonate here. 7. Help stay out of debt with a paired down lifestyle Everyone is different, but pairing down to a small living lifestyle can help you from over spending, over charging, and over buying for a large home. Everyday Care to Move’s Senior Move Managers see the benefits of de-cluttering and downsizing. If you’re ready to make a move and would prefer to make a stress free transition visit www.caretomove.com.au.

Mushies do more than taste great

WHO knew mushrooms were such little health bombs? Most of us eat them simply because we love them. They are delicious, easy to cook and complement so many dishes. But the modest little mushroom is much more than a delicious food. It can give 20 percent of the daily needs of two or more essential nutrients in a normal serve and have countless health benefits to take you into a healthy old age. Dietician Glenn Cardwell says most people think of mushrooms as vegetables, but it is not so. "Although consumed as a vegetable, they are different," he said. "Most of our food comes from diary (meat) or grains (bread etc.) but mushrooms come from a separate biological kingdom. "They have certain characters than what you would find in vegetables. You shouldn’t compare mushrooms to, say, carrots or broccoli." The Australian Dietary Guidelines outline a link

Your will: what you need to know EVERYDAY MATTERS CAROLYN DEVRIES THIS month’s article marks the halfway point of our eight-part series focusing on things to know when making a will. 4. Your will doesn’t cover all your assets Many people believe that if they have a will, it covers all their assets. However, some assets aren’t automatically covered by your will; superannuation is one of these assets. Your superannuation is held by the trustee of your superannuation fund and there are special rules that govern how a trustee can distribute your superannuation after you die. Your superannuation fund may permit you to make what is called a binding death nomination, which allows you to determine who will receive your superannuation after you die. In a binding death nomination you can

nominate for your superannuation to be paid to your estate, in which case your superannuation will then be distributed in accordance with the terms of your will. Alternatively, you can make a binding death nomination nominating a spouse, child or other dependant to be the beneficiary of your superannuation, in which case your superannuation will simply be paid directly to the nominated beneficiary.

If your superannuation fund does not allow you to make a binding death nomination or you choose not to make a binding death nomination, then the trustee will decide whether to pay your superannuation to your estate, to then be dealt with by your will, or whether to pay your superannuation directly to a spouse, child or dependant. When making or reviewing a will it is therefore important to

AUSTRALIANS spend close to $6 million each week on scratch lotto tickets. . Yet billions of dollars of forgotten money is sitting in government coffers just waiting to be claimed. Some of it could be yours. Our money watchdog ASIC says there is a pool of $1.2 billion in unclaimed bank accounts, life insurance, shares and other investments. It’s hard to fathom how people can lose track of what are, in some cases, significant sums of money. But if you’ve ever moved without letting the bank know your new address chances are you could have some forgotten cash. Since mid-2013, unclaimed money has been earning interest. So you could have a tidy

nest egg you may be unaware of. While many of the unclaimed amounts are for a few hundred dollars, plenty of people are owed sums in the tens of thousands. In some cases, the forgotten balances run into hundreds of thousands of dollars. The lost money held by ASIC is always claimable by the rightful owner – there is no time limit on claims. So it’s worth taking a moment to check if you have any forgotten money – it costs nothing. Just head to the government’s MoneySmart website and click on ‘Tools and resources’. The site also explains how to reclaim lost funds. Last financial year, more than $158 million was paid out to more than 25,000 people. Paul Clitheroe is a founding director of financial planning firm ipac, Chairman of the Australian Government Financial Literacy Board and chief commentator for Money Magazine.

Super and Budget 2016 Budget contains big changes to super and a few surprises any legislation is introduced to Parliament. Some key ‘super’ announcements: ■ Catch-up concessional contributions: For people who have not contributed their maximum allowable concessional contributions in any one year – they will now be able to catch up by contributing any unused amounts. Unused amounts can be carried

forward for a period of up to five years. This will specifically benefit those who take career breaks, but will be limited to individuals who have less than $500,000 in superannuation. ■ Contributions for older Australians: Currently – people aged between 65 and 74 wishing to make contributions to their super must meet the requirements of an annual

work test. The work test requirement will be removed from 1 July 2017. ■ Low-income spouses: Effective from 1 July 2017, the current low-income spouse superannuation tax offset (of up to $540) will be enhanced. The income threshold for the spouse for whom a contribution is being made will go up from $10,800 to $37,000. ■ Contact Tim Maher at

Sun Princess glides in Curtis Stone’s restaurant, SHARE, arrives down under AUSTRALIANS can finally enjoy a taste of chef Curtis Stone’s cuisine close to home with his first local restaurant arriving down under on Princess Cruises’ superliner Sun Princess. Curtis opened his first restaurant Maude in Beverly Hills in 2014 and is also in the midst of opening his second restaurant Gwen in Hollywood. His debut closer to home follows an exclusive partnership with Princess Cruises which features “Crafted by Curtis” menu items in the main dining rooms across the entire 18-ship fleet, the introduction of the signature SHARE restaurant to three ships and also a special Chef’s Table by Curtis Stone experience. By the end of this year,

A tribute to the pioneers of the outback and passing on their legacy

Stockman’s Hall of Fame Erle Levey

NOT everyone gets the chance to pass on some history of the nation. Yet that’s just what Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame CEO Lloyd Mills gets to do every day. The former Caloundra RSL business manager considers it a privilege to be able to help pay tribute to the pioneers of the outback and pass that legacy on to the coming generations. “Australians understand that the bush built the city,” Lloyd tells me as we walk through the landmark at the eastern entry to Longreach. “Everyone carries a bit of bush in them. It’s bringing that out in them.” After 22 years at Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast, Lloyd moved to Outback Queensland Tourism as general manager and after two years in that role the CEO position at the Hall of Fame came up. He asked the family what they wanted to do: Stay in Longreach or move back to Caloundra? They knew it would be for three to five years. But as Lloyd says, the answer was easy considering their youngest child has been in Outback Queensland longer than he was at Caloundra. “It’s got everything you need but not everything you want,” he says of Longreach. Lloyd’s biggest change in the move from coast to country was leaving friends, especially after surfing for 35 years. Yet the beauty is a barbecue on a Sunday. “There is not much chance of being rained out,” he says with a grin.

RURL HISTORY: The Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame at Longreach.

Lachie Cosser presents the The Outback Stockman’s Show at the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame at Longreach.

Professionally, one of greatest business challenges is that nothing is quick, nothing is easy in the bush. Yet Lloyd reflects that it is a bit like life.

“You need to be very resourceful,” he said. “I could rely on the internet on the coast, it was not a problem. “Here, it can be the way

you do business that is different. “It’s definitely not 9–5 Monday to Friday.” In that regard, Lloyd believes he has brought with him an understanding of people in the city. “It’s a great advantage knowing how they think … it’s a way of getting people out here,” he said. “They come from all over … from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne. “The most exciting part is the numbers of families coming out.” Saying that, the numbers of forward bookings is the best in 10 years. And the outback towns can do with that sort of

economic boost as they battle drought as well as everyday issues. Lloyd has travelled to some great places but finds people are asking do they really want to go overseas at the moment, that they want to see Australia. “The thing about out here is it is not as manufactured as some other places. You are dealing with real people, real life issues.” And in the outback, where you get used to the unexpected, Lloyd without hesitation says the most unusual thing he has seen was a German traveller with his worldly goods in a wheelie bin, and he was

350km down the Birdsville Track. Yet the grey nomad market is very strong throughout the outback, Lloyd says, with the demand for camper trailers enormous. A highlight of a visit to the Hall of Fame is the Outback Stockman’s Show, a light-hearted but informative look at caring for stock horses and sheep dogs. The children loved the animal nursery but the big attraction was the brahman bull walking through the foyer. Remembering what goes in, must come out ... you simply cannot beat poo jokes.

The sharp nip of a frisky breeze whisking around a warm body is always a lovely surprise. If you have a chosen a short getaway, this cosmopolitan city has so much to offer it’s wise to have your discovery agenda in order. I’m a regular to the southern city and love all of it, but this time around I decided it was all about the inner city suburb of Carlton, in particular Lygon St and a certain section of shops in Rathdowne St. My favourite modernhistory landmark is Alice’s Bookshop in nearby Rathdowne St. Luke Terbutt and Selina Braine took over the shop in June 2015 and this

month (June) they are celebrating the shop’s 30-year history. This tiny, four-roomed bookstore houses a collection of about 18,000 books and is perfectly located among the eateries, boutiques and bakeries known as Rathdowne Village. As their website says: “Browsers, thinkers, readers, dreamers – all are welcome.” Alice’s Bookshop smells like a bookshop, acts like a bookshop. For me Alice’s Bookshop is about surprises. I walk in there expecting anything and usually come up with everything. I pick up a favoured author on the outdoor stand and take it to the counter. “I’m surprised this book didn’t go sooner, it’s been outside for two weeks,” owner Luke says. “It was waiting for me,” I dare to tell him. And for me that’s what Alice’s Bookshop is made of – moments of pure

serendipity. I leave the bookshop with a bag of books, in a hurry to get home and review them. But I cannot quite get past Kylie’s No Dough

Bakery. I slip in and point to the tomato and mozzarella pullapart. Then I see the brown crusted fruit and nut loaf and extend my bakery buy. “Would you like the loaf

cooked in a tin or on the stone?” the baker asks. The organic quality of a stone lures me in and that’s the one I take home. I return to the

apartment’s snug environment, slice up the loaf, get out my books. I breathe in the peace of a Saturday afternoon and I know that I have found my sweet place.

Retail therapy in Big Apple

Glitz, glamour on Madison Ave Gail Forrer

IN NEW York City, there is diverse and different architecture, mind-blowing museums and people with attitude. But there’s also something else – cheap, expensive, different and thoroughly enthralling shopping experiences, wrapped up in a satin-ribboned box of history. Yes, stretching between the marvels of Macy’s to the glitter of Tiffany’s and notoriety of Bloomingdales, is an eclectic range of curiosity, retro, vintage and everything-else stores, many in the boroughs. The lure of visiting what’s known as the world biggest department store was too big for me to resist. I walked in and was greeted with a thumpy, bumpy blast of disco music. I looked up and there was the coolest looking African American woman doing the DJ thing on an

PHOTOS: CONTRIBUTED

upper floor. Sure put me in the mood for the ball-breaking sale that went on over three floors. And if you’re going to Macy’s you must act like an American and wear your running shoes. Macy’s in Herald Square covers an entire city block, has 11 levels, and encompasses more than two million square feet of retail space. You don’t want to be caught out with the wrong shoes. At the store’s beginning in 1902, it mightn’t have been disco music bringing in the customers, but it could have been the escalator.

Macy’s Herald Square building was the first in the district to have a modern-day escalator. So, if you can’t face the shopping, there’s plenty of history to get in touch with. The opening of the classic holiday film Miracle on 34th Street takes place in 1947 and is set in Macy’s Herald Square, showing off the store’s iconic Santa Claus

and festive holiday decor. Thanks to the ladies from Sex in the City, Bloomingdales was on my bucket list. I can tell you it felt good to be part of this upmarket store and know that my refined taste was shared with global celebrities. As it turns out Bloomingdales, founded in 1861, is a chain of luxury department stores owned by Macy’s. And there’s Tiffany & Co. This time it was visions of the gorgeous, elfin -like Audrey Hepburn in the classic movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s that drove me into this magnificent granite and

limestone, art deco-inspired establishment. The world-renowned Tiffany & Co store is at the corner of Fifth Ave and 57th St. It opened its doors for business October 21, 1940 and its style is as timeless as ever. In Chelsea, a neighbourhood on the West Side of Manhattan, another side of the diverse New York life, is presenting itself in the form of op shops, vintage stores, art studios, curiosity and costume stores. But this grungy atmosphere has also acted like a magnet for

the bigger stores – Barneys CO-OP – which replaced the much larger original Barneys flagship store Comme des Garçons, and Balenciaga boutiques, as well as being near Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, Christian Louboutin. Chelsea Market, on the ground floor of the former Nabisco Building, is a destination for food lovers. Put aside at least one day for a sightseeing tour of Chelsea. Everything I have mentioned in this story only provides a minute snapshot of New York retail stores.
