One couple learns to revitalise ecosystem THIRTY-SEVEN years ago Wal and Heather Mayr bought their 25-hectare property in the then remote Austinville valley. They were attracted by the wild feel of the landscape and the beautiful creek. In the early years it was just weekend visits and a bit of brush cutting and no real understanding of the flora and fauna. It was only as they slowly learned more about their environment did they realise the property had been logged, farmed and taken over by weeds. In 1999 they became early members of the newly
formed Land for Wildlife scheme. They worked closely with Land for Wildlife officer, Darryl Larsen and their neighbour Dave Blomfield.
ranging from rainforest to eucalypt forest. It contained small pockets of remnant bushland which included many rare and endangered plants.
'It is so rewarding to see the beautiful native grasses, groundcovers, shrubs and trees tentatively emerge... The property was surrounded by State Forest and farmland (later to become National Park and Council Conservation Reserve), with ecosystems
However, while having great potential, this steep and rugged property was fundamentally degraded. The restoration was a mammoth task and they
were excited by the opportunity of receiving assistance from the Nature Conservation Assistance Program (NCAP). In 2014 Wal and Heather were awarded a grant to pay environmental contractor Graeme Field to help in the restoration of a 10 hectare section of their property. The Mayrs and Council Land for Wildlife officers have been long-term partners in the evolution of the property from a degraded logging site to becoming a functioning ecosystem. AUSTRALIA DAY, GOLD COAST CITY AWARDS 2016
Roses still the Valentine’s Day favourite bloom
THE City of Gold Coast’s Australia Day Awards program recognises and honours the outstanding achievement of individuals and groups within our community who are worthy of recognition for helping to make our city a better place to live.
Citizen of the Year – Gary Baildon
Gary spent three terms in the city’s highest office but has also played senior roles in many government and community organisations. He most recently chaired the Gold Coast Waterways Authority Board, playing a significant role in the Broadwater Parklands Stage 3 expansion, development of the Surfers Paradise Riverfront Masterplan and the Coomera Regional Dredge Spoil Management Facility. He has been a member of the Rotary Club of Surfers Paradise since 1970 and in 2010 was made a Member of the Order of Australia.
Environmental Achievement Award – Wal and Heather Mayr
Dawn from Coolangatta has been a florist for 40 years. By YVONNE GARDINER
FOR Coolangatta Florist co-owner Dawn Everingham, Valentine’s Day is the busiest day of the year. After four decades as a florist, she’s well-versed in the ways of romantic gifting. “Forty years ago, it wasn’t a busy time like it is now,” she said. “It’s a lovely time. The girls love it and the boys seem to get a kick out of it. “One big change is that girls send flowers to boys.” Roses are still the favourite floral method of showing
undying love. On the Gold Coast and in the Tweed region, the ways of showing special affection are many and varied. Gift-givers with deep pockets can choose something truly romantic for Valentine’s Day by taking off with Hot Air Balloon Gold Coast. This extravagant aerial trip is followed by a champagne breakfast in a mountain paradise. If a canal trip is more your style, Gold Coast Gondolas based at Main Beach will spoil and impress any
partner. Intimate dinners and stage shows, diamond bracelets, chocolates, luxury overnight stays in enchanting places, beach picnics – the options are limitless to celebrate this February 14 tradition. Something really different – the 2016 Cupid’s Undie Run at Burleigh Heads puts some hilarity into charity fundraising with hundreds of half-naked runners taking to the streets to help the Children’s Tumour Foundation.
Wal and Heather have spent the last 25 years tirelessly restoring their property, at the top of the Austinville valley adjoining highly valued conservation estate, including Springbrook National Park and the Austinville Conservation Area. Since becoming members of Land for Wildlife in 1999, the Mayrs have hosted numerous open property events to share their experiences and

enthusiasm for restoration with others. In 2004 they entered into a General Voluntary Conservation Agreement with the City, to protect the property’s natural values for the term of their property ownership, and in 2008, entered into a Nature Refuge with the State to protect those values in perpetuity.
Young Citizen of the Year – Tanya Diessel
Tanya works as a community lawyer, providing free legal advice and assistance to the Gold Coast community and ongoing casework to the Gold Coast most vulnerable and disadvantaged people. She was awarded the 2011 National Volunteer of the Year Award for her work at the Gold Coast Community Legal Centre.
Gold FM Community Service Award – Animal Welfare League
Animal Welfare League Queensland (AWLQ) was founded in Southport in 1959 by a group of Gold Coast locals who wanted to
create better outcomes for the area’s homeless animals. The AWLQ has grown to become one of the most effective and respected animal welfare charities in all of Australia. In 2015, AWLQ cared for up to 15,000 strayed, abandoned and homeless animals and is on track to re-home 9000 of these animals. The League has re-homed over 100,000 animals throughout its history through the commitment of almost 700 volunteers.
Sports Achievement Award – Luke Douglas
A key player for the Gold Coast Titans, Luke is tireless in his efforts to help others when he is off the field. He is a strong supporter of Down Syndrome Association Queensland, a passion that came from his late mother Trish Douglas. Luke was the driving force behind the Titans relationship with Down Syndrome Association Queensland where he helped organise the special activities at training and the run out with the team against the Rabbitohs.
Cultural Achievement Award – Polly Snowden
Polly Snowden, reigning 2015 Music Champion of the Year award winner from the Gold Coast Music Awards, is a champion for cultural momentum on the Gold Coast. In 2015 she managed to deliver the successful Summertime Sessions.

Donor lungs save beloved Nanna By YVONNE GARDINER
MARION Walsham’s book is a tribute to her two brave brothers who succumbed to the disease which she is recovering from. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) also claimed the life of her 74-year-old father in 1990, the same year her 47-year-old brother died. Both were “healthy, fit, strong men”, Marion says. She was diagnosed with IPF in 2006. “We’d been away on holidays. I got a cold, runny nose and cough,” she said. “I went to the doctor and that led to the diagnosis. “The scan pointed to endstage idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. “I used to get quite breathless going up the stairs at work. “I was quite unfit and I put it down to that.” Marion’s book, Wishing on a Dandelion, is also a tribute to organ donor families who hand over “the ultimate gift of life”. “My brother was assessed for transplant but he ran
out of time,” she said. “I was lucky. I was hellbent on surviving. “A lot of people die because there’s not enough lungs.” The book’s title recognises the role of Marion’s grandson in her survival. “As my life ebbed from the effects of IPF, my then sixyear-old grandson Remy came across the dried bloom of a dandelion,” she said. “He took a breath, blew, and watched the delicate seeds disperse, announcing to his father, ‘I wish Nanny could get new lungs’. “Three hours later, we received news that donor lungs had become available. “Miraculously, the lungs matched and I was subsequently transplanted with two healthy lungs. “My gratitude for my new life lies with my donor and his or her family, the team at the Queensland Lung Transplant Service at The Prince Charles Hospital, Brisbane, and my family, including a little boy who wanted so desperately for his Nanny to have healthy new lungs.”
Double lung transplant recipient and author Marion Walsham with her grandchildren Elodie, Jasper and Remy. Photo: Yvonne Gardiner.
That was seven years ago, when Marion was 62. “What the carers go through is quite horrendous. “Doctors don’t know what causes IPF. It’s totally lacking in research funds.
“I always did Pilates and I think that helped with my core strength.” Marion, of Banora Point, is keen to raise awareness of the disease, whose progression can now be slowed through medication.
She says the Australian Government initiative DonateLife and the non-government Transplant Australia are doing a superb job promoting the cause of organ and tissue donation.

Roads, rates, tourism set election scene By YVONNE GARDINER
A PROPOSED cruise terminal, congested roads and reasonable rates increases are some of the issues concerning Gold Coast seniors in the lead-up to local government elections. Graham Pill, of Surfers Paradise, would like to see less procrastination and more leadership from elected councillors. In his view, councillors spend too much time listening to public opinion and not enough time making decisions on pressing issues like the cruise terminal and traffic congestion. Graham says traffic jams have worsened in his 15 years on the coast “When I came to the Gold Coast, the thing I had to adapt to was heaps of the roads were dead-ends or one-way,” he said. “I could see frequent problems with traffic flow, and hear sirens from police and
The traffic problem has increased.
ambulance vehicles. “Council members were unwilling or unable to hire a consultant who was able to analyse the problem and then find a solution. “Eventually, the current light rail system was proposed, and has now demonstrated its worth. “It’s a wonderful benefit. I use the car less because of it. I’d be wanting the council to get the funding to extend the light rail.”
Graham said council needed to “take control” of planning away from developers who were building more high-rises in the most densely populated part of the coast. “The traffic problem has considerably increased and the increase in the high-rise building population has not been matched with increased private parking space,” he said. “Car owners are now
placed with no alternative but to park on public roads, and make corridors for moving traffic more narrow.” As for the proposed cruise ship terminal, Graham is in favour. “We’re plugging the Gold Coast as the leisure capital of Australia and we haven’t got a cruise ship terminal,” he said. Lance Tannock, of Clear Island Waters, is against the terminal. He’s spent 14 years on the Gold Coast and is a regular passenger on cruise ships, having completed his 24th trip. “I don’t think the Broadwater is conducive to cruise ships,” Lance said. “Here we are wanting to give one of the most environmentally sensitive parts of the coast away. “Public open space is at a premium on the coast – we need more and more of it,” Mr Tannock said.

These activities include: ■ Those that can be performed as part of everyday life, like housework, walking to the local shop instead of driving, gardening and raking leaves, and vacuuming. ■ Leisure pursuits that involve physical activity, including golf, lawn bowls, bocce, woodwork, and various types of dancing. ■ Walking groups, strength training, tai chi or other group exercise activities, hydrotherapy classes and yoga.

No one sits on the sidelines when Coast to Coast Rock’n’Roll instructors Peter and Lyn Brain invite all-comers on to the dance floor. The lighting is dimmed, music of the ‘50s and ‘60s starts up and it’s time for action. Eight years ago, Kevin Jeffries wouldn’t go near a dance floor. Rosalie ‘driven’ to help war effort By YVONNE GARDINER
FOR more than three years in the 1940s, Rosalie Brooke chased her dream of helping with the war effort. She was keen to be a driver, but ended up in “searchlights” at the army training camp at Kapooka, NSW. Aged 19 in 1943, Rosalie volunteered for the Australian Women’s Army Service (AWAS), an entity set up in 1941 to “release men from certain military duties for employment in fighting units”. “I volunteered because I wanted to be in the services,” she said. “I was working at the old Surfers Paradise Hotel as a waitress. “We went down to Kapooka in May and we came back in August. It was freezing.” Rosalie is one of 300 women around Australia who contributed their wartime stories to Between the
Dances, a book that highlights the many ways these women made a paid or voluntary war effort. Eventually she was sent back to driving school – learning a skill that would come in handy later in life when she taught her husband to drive. “We were there for 18 months, at Highgate Hill (Brisbane) 68 Battery,” she said. “The Americans had come down and pushed the Japs back. “They disbanded us and I ended
up in Toowoomba, driving at Cabarlah army camp. “Toowoomba’s another place that’s bloody cold.” In 1946, Rosalie left the AWAS behind and resumed her work at the hotel. Summing up her war service, the 91-year-old Currumbin Waters resident says: “It

Commissioner handles aged care complaints
Families at War over Inheritance In an ideal world the family kitchen table used to be the preferred forum for resolving messy disputes over inheritance. But now we hear stories of brothers resorting to fisticuffs, adults not speaking to their parents and forced sales of much-loved properties as a result of deep divisions and long-held resentments. More and more jealous children and cheated wives and husbands alike are taking other family members to Court. The number of families contesting relative’s will has risen significantly in recent times with many of the high profile and celebrity estate disputes being played out in the public arena. However, don’t assume that it doesn’t happen to everyday people because it does. Even though your family dispute may not make the papers, the effect on a family can be equally as emotional and devastating. People will tell me, “Oh, that will never happen in our family. Our children are so close, there aren’t going to be any problems.” However things can get really ugly with beneficiaries fighting over the craziest things. Usually it’s something that’s a reminder of their childhood. Pretty soon siblings will descend into the “Mum always liked you best” or “You always got your way”. Rationality can soon fly out the window and situations can turn even worse with siblings stealing items from the estate or bullying another into giving up a cherished item, causing hard feelings all around.
AUSTRALIA’S Aged Care Complaints Commissioner Rae Lamb handles and investigates any complaint relating to a Commonwealth-subsidised residential or home-based aged care service. Minister for Aged Care Sussan Ley welcomed Ms Lamb’s appointment as an “independent” commissioner in January. “Older Australians have a right to receive quality services and be treated with respect, whether they are in an aged care facility or their own home,” Ms Ley said. “This change will strengthen the aged care complaints process, and is now completely separated from the regulation and funding of aged care.” Ms Lamb said the elderly and their families could
The most common grievance is that the will is ‘unfair”, along with the surge in documents being contested because of alleged mistakes, or the fact that the person making the Will was incapacitated or was put under undue pressure. A recent case before the New South Wales Supreme Court involved a pair of Sydney brothers who challenged the will of their late grandfather, who left his 50,000 acre farm to their mother. Their grandfather told the boys his farm – made up of nine smaller farmers – would pass to the brothers once their mother died. But the brothers had other ideas and have challenged the Will, arguing they deserved to inherit it all now, and their mother should receive nothing, or just a pension. The fight could mean the brothers end up with nothing. When they made the fateful decision to commence the proceedings, suing their mother as the executor of their grandfather’s estate and claiming they were entitled to the entirety of his property – to the exclusion of their mother – they produced an outcome which [their grandfather] would not have been anticipated. Affronted by their conduct, their mother made the decision to leave her sons out of her own will, so that, absent a court order, or a change of heart by her, the brothers will now never receive the inheritance to which they have long aspired. Supreme Court Justice Michael Pembroke has ruled that the brothers deserved to inherit something from their grandfather, but urged them to settle the case with their mother in mediation. If not settled at mediation the case will return to the court later this year to decide whether the brothers should receive cash or one of the nine farms inherited by their mother.

Its time to apply for Seniors Week grants
Many people have no idea that their wills could trigger litigation. They think leaving a will they have a right to do whatever they want, which is not necessarily the case. On the flip side if you don’t have an Estate Plan at all what you are really saying is “let the Court decide who gets my property, who will be in charge and how my estate will be administered’. I am sure most of us would rather make those decisions ourselves.
COMMUNITY organisations and local councils can apply for Palaszczuk Government subsidies of up to $1000 to run activities and events across the state during Seniors Week 2016, to be held from 13-21 August. At a local senior’s afternoon tea in Gladstone for Community Cabinet, Seniors Minister Coralee O’Rourke encouraged organisations to apply for their share of the $100,000 funding from 1 February 2016. “These grants are a great way to help fund local

The unretiring Aussie volunteer
Teaching from a lifetime of experience By MARGARET JOHANSSON
WHEN Bob Howarth took early retirement in 2005 it opened a door to the challenges of life as an Australian Business Volunteer. Today Bob, 71, lives on the Gold Coast and part-time on Moreton Island, that is when he is not on assignment through Australian Business Volunteers, a notfor-profit organisation whose priority is to place business professionals in short-term business-focused assignments. Since retirement as managing director of News Limited’s PNG Division Bob has completed nine assignments for ABV in Indonesia, Bali and PNG. ABV began in 1981 when the Australian government sought to use the business skills and experience of newly retired Australian executives to strengthen businesses to contribute to the relief of poverty and increased wellbeing of communities in South-East Asia and the Pacific region.
Bob Howarth’s volunteer experience began back in PNG when he heard that ABV was looking for someone experienced in colour and layout design in print media. That was Bob Howarth to a T. Not that his horizons needed much expansion. He’d worked in Hong Kong for nine years at South China Morning Post, at East Timor’s Independent Daily and three years in PNG, had trained journalists from 1978 and was a part-time lecturer at Bond and Griffith Universities. Bob’s first assignment was in Bandung in West Java. He taught in a university classroom on two different campuses, stirring up a lot of interest because of the laughter coming from the classroom. He designed the classes to suit the requirements and situation. “I teach from what I know, not from a book,” he says. He did two stints in Bandung and two at the Un-
iversitas Padjadjaran in Indonesia, in the process being “adopted” as a grandfather by four of his students, young women who now all work in the media in Jakart. His next assignment was in Bali, at the Institute of Peace and Democracy where he instructed staff in designing a website. He did three assignments in Bali and saw a different side of the country at the Udayana campus, which is totally funded by Australia. There he met Bob Carr and Julie Bishop who were puzzled to find a lone Australian at the government institute. The institute’s mission is to tell countries such as Egypt, Myanmar, Tunisia and Fiji (which are all very interested) about the pathways Indonesia took from being a military dictatorship to a democracy. His last assignment was with the Bank of PNG. He rates his biggest impact as significantly improving

the communication capacity of the Institute of Peace and Democracy, and “quiet diplomacy”, in particular meeting with international leaders and diplo-
mats during two Bali Democracy forums, an annual event aimed at development of democracy in the Asia-Pacific region. But his biggest reward is to
see the young people he taught succeed in the world of business. “You can’t put a price on that,” Bob said.

AGING of the Australian population will inevitably lead to more hearing problems. Currently about 60% of men and women aged 60 and over experience a form of hearing loss, and some medication can affect hearing. Australian Hearing’s Gold Coast manager Karina Morrison works to address those problems every day. Testing is free for anyone aged over 18 years. “Our youngest client is one month old and our eldest is 103,” Karina said. “Australian Hearing is a Federal Government agency under the banner of the Department of Human Services. “The money goes back into the National Acoustic Laboratories (for research). “What we can offer veterans is something no one else can – we have a special affiliation with the Department of Veteran Affairs.” There is a range of technology on the market to improve hearing loss.

For $500, it’s a great alternative,” she said. Australian Hearing allows about 15 minutes for a hearing test. “That generally gives you a good baseline to what the next step is,” Karina says. “At aged care facilities, we also train staff on how to clean a hearing aid. “We also work closely with GPs.” Australian Hearing Gold Coast & Northern NSW marketing officer Sheree Lyons says services also include fitting hearing devices and providing counselling and rehabilitative

community news “A grandparent is a little bit parent, a little bit teacher, and a little bit best friend” (Unknown) This month a Gold Coast city libraries spokesperson talks about the relationships between grandparents, grandchildren, carers and libraries: “Grandparents – do you realise the amazing impact you have on your grandchildren by sharing stories and rhymes, singing, talking and playing with them? This is not only enjoyable, but valuable in supporting their brain development as well. Grandparents have their own unique relationship with their grandchildren and often have access to that most important illusive treasure – time. However, even the busiest grandparents can take advantage of the opportunities that arise through the regular activities you experience with your grandchildren. about things beyond the here and now are all known to help children’s literacy development. Wendy Butler, grandparent of two-year-old Acer, said she loves to interact with Acer using everyday activities like shopping, going to the beach or cooking as great opportunities to enhance the use of language. “It actually makes me stop and look at life through the eyes of a child and realise the valuable learning opportunities, that we as adults take for granted. “We also love to share our time, looking at and discussing our favourite books (especially talking about what we can see and what the story is about) and singing songs and nursery rhymes”. Let’s talk about the values of age-friendly Ensure the state’s vision of respect and support
THE Palaszczuk government is encouraging Queenslanders, both young and old, to have their say on how to make Queensland a more agefriendly community. We are looking for ideas on how Queenslanders can work together to welcome and support seniors in the community, as part of a new seniors’ strategy – Queensland: An Agefriendly Community. An age-friendly community encourages people of all ages to take part in community activities. It is a place where people are treated with respect, regardless of their age or ability; where they can stay in touch with the people they care about and can find appropriate support services that meet their needs. Most importantly, age-friendly

age-friendly vision for every Queenslander to work towards. Queensland seniors have contributed their working lives to our state, building our economy, communities and families, and it is important that we value their contributions and knowledge. Together, we can develop practical solutions to
overcome barriers that could prevent them from being more involved. While the online survey will only take a few minutes to complete, it will make a huge difference in the formation of government policies and programs to support seniors. We know that connecting with the community to find a shared vision will be the key in building a more age-friendly society, and I encourage all Queenslanders to go online and get involved. YOUR SAY OUR STORY By YVONNE GARDINER
A QUEENSLAND ageing expert has come out in support of older drivers and their safety record on the road. Queensland Brain Institute researcher Dr Jaqueline Liddle has pointed out that driving performance is more related to health rather than age, so there can be safe drivers at any age. Age is not a good indicator of skill, she adds. Dr Liddle’s comments follow a call from NSW Police Head of Traffic John Hartley for drivers over the age of 70 to “reconsider” their driving ability. Assistant Commissioner Hartley said drivers of this age were twice as likely as younger drivers to die in a roadside accident in NSW.

He said that senior citizens often found it difficult to stay centred in their lane, stop in time for red lights and reverse safely without running into objects. “It is these issues that put older drivers, their passengers and other road users at great risk,” he said. “Personal responsibility is the key to keeping us all safe on NSW roads. Don’t wait until you’re involved in a near-miss, or a crash, to reconsider your driving ability.” The latest figures put out by the NSW Centre for Road Safety reveal that the number of fatalities on the
road for senior citizens has spiked by 20% in the last year alone. Drivers over the age of 70 represented nearly 22% of the total fatalities in 2015, while the age bracket makes up just 11% of the population. In Queensland, a Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) spokesperson said older drivers were not “over-represented” in road crash statistics. Seniors aged 75 years or older, as drivers or riders, made up 12% of road crash deaths – the same as other age groups, apart from those aged 16 to 24 years with 24% of fatal-
ities. “Age is not a barrier to driving and many older people are perfectly capable of driving safely. However, physical and mental changes that often come with ageing can affect how older people drive,” the TMR spokesperson said. “In recognition of this, since 1996 Queensland licence-holders aged 75 or older have been required to carry and drive in accordance with a current medical certificate. This requirement remains current.” Following a review of older CONTINUED PAGE 13

Age not a good
SOME people have adopted the position that our roads will be safer without senior drivers. They appear to have arbitrarily selected a terminal age to our driving that rejects the existing considerations of health and abil-
ity. If you remove any group from the road whom you consider to be a greater than average risk – say people under 25 years, or perhaps the unemployed – you will no doubt include in the selected group drivers who
present a greater than average risk. Apart from this, the reduction in road users will certainly improve road safety. Anyone taking a vehicle to the road presents some level of risk. Ideologues focus and pur-
sue a perceived “good” in a way that ignores lateral contra-considerations. For them, this perceived “good” justifies the means, and in their narrow focus, they can be fatuously convinced and quite cruel. J.K. Creevey

driver safety undertaken by the TMR and the Older Driver Safety Advisory Committee, changes were introduced on January 1, 2014, to limit the term of an older driver’s medical certificate to one year. This requirement to have an annual medical check-up ensured any problems were detected early and managed sooner. UQ Ageing Mind Initiative co-director and clinical neuropsychologist Dr Nancy Pachana, who specialises in elder driving safety, said decades of
driving research had found that older drivers were just as safe as younger adults on the roads. “It’s ageist to state a person cannot drive just because of their age,” Dr Pachana said. “The NSW police are confusing the greater vulnerability to injury with driving skills. Older people have increasingly frail bones and are more susceptible to motor vehicle injuries, not just as drivers, but also as passengers and pedestrians.” Seniors can use a self-assessment questionnaire on the RACQ’s website to check their current

If we were not married, but just living together in a de facto relationship, we could both claim the concession. This seems to us to be a clear case of discrimina-

driving capability. Dr Liddle said most older people voluntarily stopped driving, often at some cost to their independence. “There are also costs and risks for older people not driving, including increased risks of depression, isolation and poorer health outcomes,” she said. The UQDrive program endorses the following tips from retired drivers, for older people considering their driving future: ■ Start to think about your options early – while you are still driving, try out different transport options including public transport, transport services and lifts from family and friends. ■ Have a long-term plan for your transport needs. ■ Weigh it up – take the
time to think through all the factors involved in driving and retiring from driving. ■ Look into your priorities and values, and put plans into place. ■ Think about the positives and negatives of retiring from driving. ■ Talk to key people – talking to family, friends and health professionals might help you to consider all of your options. ■ Other ways – it is important to stay involved in the community. This can be done by using different transport options and taking up new roles and activities. ■ Stay involved and active – staying active after giving up driving is important. To keep up an active lifestyle, some people find they need to change their routines, and others move to areas with better transport options.

A WW1 project seeks ‘citizen historians’ A GLOBAL project has been launched which will research the lives and wartime service of Geordies – from the North-East of England – in the armies of Australia, New Zealand, Newfoundland, and Canada during the First World War. Dominion Geordies in World War One – funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council – will seek to crowdsource research by recruiting volunteer researchers in Australia and overseas. Dr James McConnel, history lecturer at Northumbria University, said: “The first stage of the project will involve collecting information that will help us build a comprehensive and fascinating insight into the stories of so many of the local men and women of the north-east who, having left their native land in the three decades or so before the war, found themselves

Jim’s book shares the stories of yesteryear MORE than 40 years recording events in the Queensland bush has inspired Jim Bowden’s latest publishing venture – as author of the children’s book Bush Rhymes for Younger Minds. In 1958, during his early years at Queensland Country Life, he started writing a children’s column for a growing band of young readers all over the state. His Kiddies Korner by Cousin Jim included a poem each week about bush animals – Katie Kangaroo, Percy Platypus, Elmer Emu and Bertie Bandicoot among them. Jim went on to become chief of staff, production manager and associate editor at Country Life and in the 1980s established his own publishing and PR business. Still writing, Jim contributes regularly to Seniors Newspaper. Now his verses have been enlivened by the antics of a colourful collection of
bush animals, wonderfully illustrated by Brisbane artist John Flitcroft. The book of rhymes is also unique in another respect – it includes an educational illustrated glossary of facts about the Australian bush creatures featured – their origins, habits and habitats. The book will support the Royal Queensland Bush Children’s Health Scheme (BUSHkids), a non-profit community organisation. Let’s talk about priorities luxury cruise or hearing aid
Ann Rickard Snapshots of Life
ONE of the myriad annoying afflictions many people experience upon entering their autumn years, is loss of hearing. My hearing is still good dare I say excellent - despite my autumn years. The same can’t be said for my old husband of 47 years. Along with hair and certain teeth, much of his hearing has departed the building. He inquired about a hearing aid, but when he told me a proper aid, no secondhand cheapie, , would cost $13,000, my shriek of dismay almost destroyed what was left of the diminished hearing. “I could have a round-theworld-cruise for that price,” I screamed into his good ear. “You are so not getting a $13,000 hearing aid.” Seeing as we’d just spent $12,000 to repair two of his side teeth, he shut up quickly and there has been no
more mention of it. (I just shout at him louder – every bit as effective as a $13,000 device.) But here’s an interesting side to the hearing scenario. Despite my own excellent hearing (and full head of hair and gleaming set of teeth), I need the assistance of captions for movies and television shows. This is because I can’t understand the accents and mumblings of so many actors. Some BBC shows are just as hard. I loved the drama Happy Valley set in Yorkshire but had to lean forward in the chair and strain to catch most of the dialogue with the strong northern English accents. As for that wise-cracking, smart-alec, fast-talking donkey in the Shriek movies, I’ve never caught one of his words. In telling you this sorry tale of hearing loss I realise I have revealed my television viewing habits, and they don’t exactly make for a cultured mix ... gangsters, talking donkeys? But what can I say? Now I have discovered captioned television, the mix is set to become even more eclectic. ann.rickard@scnews.com. au

community news Affirmations to help find a happy and prosperous life
Eva Bennett Inspiring and Retiring
HI EVERYONE, here is my special anagram to kick-start 2016, similar to the one I did for 2014. Happiness is a state of mind. Money doesn’t automatically bring happiness. Allow yourself to enjoy the magic moments of everyday life. People who are friendly, caring, are better to be near than negative people. Practise, practise, practise! Old habits don’t disappear overnight.

U3A CLUBS ■ Twin Towns Inc. Our club starts 2016 with enthusiasm and excitement because in June this year we are 25 years old! We are planning several events to celebrate this momentous occasion. Events such as art shows, concerts, fashion parades, guest speakers and more and will be advertising each as they come up, to keep everyone posted. We have faced many challenges during the past 25 years and have endured them all and continually look forward and plan for our group going forward into the next twenty five years to benefit all the future “Seniors”, and who knows what they can accomplish in their “old age”! ■ Broadbeach

Intimate signs flag possible health issues
Good Health Dr Michael Gillman
HAVING difficulties obtaining or maintaining an erection can be a source of great frustration and embarrassment for men, but did you know that they could also be signals of major underlying health problems? Around 40% of men aged 50 years and over have problems with their erec-
tions and in the majority of these men, there is an underling medical problem. It is well known that men with vascular risk-factor conditions such as high blood pressure, high blood sugar levels, high cholesterol levels and being overweight have an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes, but these very same risk factors are the main causes of erection problems. So what are the early signs or symptoms of high blood pressure or high sugar or cholesterol levels? Usually none, except for the onset of erection problems. If your erections are not as
strong as they were or if they are not lasting as long as they did, it may well be that you have one or more of these risk factors and are at risk of a future heart attack or stroke. You can think of your erectile function as a “barometer” of your vascular health. So here is the message: If you notice that your erectile function is deteriorating, make an appointment with your GP to get a medical check-up which will look for these vascular risk factors and treat them as needed. You can get further information by visiting the following site: www.drmichaelgillman.com

Computer Club First Monday of each month at 9.30am John will run a Power Point class showcasing the fun side of this versatile application. Photoshop for Beginners will start in March from 5 to 7pm. This will cover the basics of Photoshop, how to set it up and the tools that can be used. With the use of cameras that are integrated into tablets and phones more people are getting interested in enhancing their images. The computer club is located in the South Tweed Sports Club 4 Minjungbal Drive South Tweed. Assistance is offered to people wishing to obtain their first computer with courses from abso-
lute beginners to the more advanced. The tutors work on a voluntary basis and get fulfilment from passing on their knowledge to help others using the PCs and Apple Mac Computers. People can join at any time but if they require more direct information they can attend the next “sign on” day on Friday, February 26 at 10am to noon. Further information about the club can be obtained by visiting the club’s web site at http:// www.tact.org.au or by contacting TACT on 07 5524 9212.

Dr Tickell shares his tips for getting a good night’s sleep
Dr John Tickell, Seniors Wellbeing columnist
DR TICKELL is a former general practitioner and “baby deliverer”, he went sideways in the medical fields into sports medicine and the study of longevity. He played first grade football with The Mighty Hawthorn Hawks in the 1960s, was Australia’s schoolboy hurdles champion, team physician with the great coaches, Barassi and Hafey, won 3 premierships, looked after McEnroe, Connors, Newcombe on tour, co-owned a Melbourne Cup winner, Doriemus (Damien Oliver) in 1995, and is Australia’s #1 international author with the global bestseller, Golf and Life with the greatest golfer of all time, and Sportsman of The Century, The Golden Bear, Jack Nicklaus. He has been married to a world-class trainer for 45 years, Sue (as seen on Dr
T’s National TV Show across America) with 5 children and 10 grandchildren. His colourful resume includes developer of two international wellness resorts. Why do little kids sleep so well? Because as soon as the classroom door opens they run and jump and move non-stop. They get physically tired. Why do so many adults sleep so badly? Because they sit behind desks and worry about things such as money and what other people think of them. The old counting-thesheep routine is not as silly as it sounds. You should be able to give your brain two simultaneous tasks that shut off the outside world. It is very clever and you just drift off to sleep. Other excellent ways of relaxing the brain in readiness for a great sleep are laughing, and of course the old-time cure – sex. The physiological aftermath of the human orgasm is the best natural sleeping pill of all. So if you can, have one.

MAKE just one new year resolution. Yes – just one resolution this year. Are you prepared to take two minutes, four times a day – while sitting down with a coffee, chatting on the phone, reading or watching TV? Because in those two minutes you could do something about your arthritic pain, aching or stiff joints, circulation problems, swollen ankles, cramps, weak leg muscles and more. Would you believe you can buy something to help you do this for less than $40? “What a bargain and what a success,” wrote Jack Kingston who bought an Aircycle exerciser for his
wife’s circulation problems, “and it’s so gentle on her aching legs.” According to movement therapist Bruce Thompson, exercise does not have to involve elaborate equipment or trips to the gym to be effective. Often the simplest exercise is all that is required for improved health and rehabilitation. “The Aircycle has changed my life,” wrote Lorraine Bell. “Yesterday I walked 10 blocks. And my doctor had said surgery was the only answer.” Keeping an Aircycle beside a comfortable chair enables people to keep joints and muscles moving (in both hands and feet) whenever
they sit – at home, in the office or in a car or plane. “By using the Aircycle I can enjoy life,” said Barbara B. “It helps relieve the pain from my arthritic hip.” To take two minutes several times a day, may be the best resolution you can make this year. The simple Aircycle exercise not only gives relief from arthritic aches and pains, improves circulation and strengthens leg muscles, it may also be your easiest step to a year of better health. For more information and orders, visit www.aircycle.co.nz call 0412 329 450, or post $39.90 (p&p included) to Aircycle, PO Box 148 Wynnum, Qld 4178.

Time to honour our local heroes The Tweed Shire Australia Day awards
SOME of the Tweed’s leading contributors were recognised when the 2015 Tweed Shire Australia Day Awards were presented as part of the main celebration and citizenship ceremony at Kingscliff High School. The highest honour, Citizen of the Year, was awarded to Tweed resident Fay Gleave, who has been sharing her knowledge on saving lives for 41 years. Ms Gleave first became involved with St John Ambulance in 1958. In 2015 alone, she taught the finer points of first aid to more
than 2000 students in northern NSW as part of the St John First Aid School program. Seventeen-year-old Elizabeth Kirk received the Young Achiever in Community Service Award for juggling an ongoing commitment to community service, volunteer work, high academic achievement at school and two part-time jobs. The monthly ‘15 Minutes of Fame’ event at Stokers Siding/Dunbible Memorial Hall won the Arts and Cultural Achievement Award. It is completely staffed by
volunteers and has attracted a wide variety of professional and amateur performers of all ages. Kingscliff resident Max Bryant took out the Sporting Achievement Award for his outstanding accomplishments in cricket and rugby league. At just 16 years of age, Max was selected in cricket for an Open North Coast Cricket Team, the Gold Coast Dolphins 2nd grade team, the Queensland Under-17 team to play in the Australian Championships and the Gold Coast Titans Under-16 rugby league

self-employed small crop farmer, he advises land owners on fire permits and laws controlling pile burns. He received the Rural Fire Service National Medal, a testament to thousands of voluntary hours.

STARTING on Saturday, August 13, Seniors Week 2016 will run through to Sunday, August 21 – offering nine days of celebrations. Last year 737 events were held from the Northern Peninsula Region to Mount Isa and from Cairns to the Granite Belt. Seniors Week provides the opportunity to unite all Queenslanders in celebrating the valuable contributions seniors make in their communities. Whether as volunteers or in the workforce, seniors use their experience and knowledge as community leaders, carers, grandparents and advocates. Thanks to the tremendous efforts of many groups and countless volunteers across the state, Seniors Week is now a major annual event. For some living in rural and remote areas, Seniors Week is the one time of year when they can catch up with present and long-lost friends. For others, Seniors Week is a way to assist in combating social isolation through the discov-

To continue the momentum of previous years, we encourage you to support your local community organisation to plan and host a Seniors Week event. The Queensland Government has provided $100,000 to subsidise events and activities held during Seniors Week 2016. AFTER 42 years in our large home in the Sydney suburb of Engadine, we needed to downsize. We researched numerous Over 50 Villages online before we discovered Palm Lake Resort Tweed River. It seemed too good to be true and so convenient to the airport, great shopping venues, ample medical care and beautiful beaches. A quick visit confirmed our feelings, our dream come true, we paid a deposit, sold our Sydney home and moved into our new home in June and love it, as do our family and friends when they come to visit. The Tuesday dinner and Wednesday lunch in the dining room are a great opportunity to meet new friends and feel very welcome with all the activities available. We are fitter than ever, enjoying social golf, aqua aerobics, yoga, the gym, indoor pool and spa, walking, riding our bikes, fishing and boating, and using watercraft provided by the village. When we feel like relaxing, there is the movie theatre, library, craft room, bingo, carpet bowls, games room and men’s shed or just having a coffee in our wonderful clubhouse overlooking the beautiful Tweed River. We are very thankful that we live where we live. Residents, Wayne and Rhonda Waters

Sharemarket volatility calls fop perspective: Clitheroe By PAUL CLITHEROE
SHAREMARKET falls have dominated the news lately, and while no one, myself included, enjoys seeing shares take a beating, it’s certainly not the first time stocks have had a horror run. And it won’t be the last. Nonetheless, research by our investment watchdog ASIC, found one in 10 Australian investors lost money they couldn’t afford to lose in 2015. This doesn’t always reflect the failure of an investment but rather a failure to understand how investments work. ASIC’s study also showed that only one in three Australians understand the concept of the ‘risk/return trade-off’, which states that higher returns go hand in hand with a greater risk of

losing money. Almost 70 per cent of people have little or no idea about the concept at all. If you have a direct investment in shares, it’s critical to accept that, yes, in some years your shares may fall in value. Selling those shares in a downturn will mean taking a loss – something that may be avoidable if you hold onto the stocks until markets recover. To see how much you understand about investment risk, take the online ‘investing challenge’ on ASIC’s MoneySmart website (moneysmart.gov.au). Paul Clitheroe is a founding director of financial planning firm ipac, Chairman of the Australian Government Financial Literacy Board and chief commentator for Money Magazine.
Seniors’ Crown Currency service
IT WAS in February 2015, that Crown Currency Exchange opened at The Plaza, Maroochydore, bringing to 11 the number of stores in the business. It has been a great success. This success is due, in no small part, to the fact that Crown provides a great service and its rates are unmatched. Seniors can add the benefit of an even better rate on currency transactions, coupled with Crown’s famous tagline: no fees; no commission. Senior’s patronage has played the other great role in establishing the business. Crown’s business development manager Tania Lewis said: “In all the
areas in which we operate, we’ve established wonderful relations with the local seniors’ population. Each has supported the other and we have many loyal customers.” Last week a man bought $US5000 from a currency

Cards have a place and Crown offers the MasterCard Multi-currency Cash passport. However, rates on all cards are more expensive than cash rates. Can I prepare my own? EVERYONE over the age of 18 should have a Will. Having a will ensures that your assets will be distributed according to your wishes after you pass away. If you die without a will, the laws in Queensland apply a rigid formula for distributing assets and the people you love the most may miss out completely. A common question that is
AGED CARE WE CARE
regularly asked is “can I prepare my own will?” The answer is yes you can but you do so at the risk of causing a costly and an emotional legal battle among relatives in the event a dispute arises after you die. To ensure that a will is valid, there are a number of legal requirements that must be followed. There are usually factors that you have not
considered when you make your will because the DIY kit does not explain all the relevant issues in terms that you can understand. The process of making a standard will at Bruce Legal is inexpensive, quick and you will walk away with the peace of mind knowing that your affairs are finally in order. Don’t leave it to your loved ones to try and sort it out after
you are gone. Refer to our ad on page 3 of Senior’s Newspaper to take advantage of our Seniors Special which we are currently offering. You will get a free Enduring Power of Attorney with every will purchased and a 15% discount with a senior’s card. For more info phone Bruce Legal Lawyers & Mediators on 07 5644 5996.

ACCORDING to government figures, one in three people aged over 65 will fall each year in Australia, resulting in more than 1.5 million hospital days spent on fall-related injuries. Seventy per cent of these falls happen in or around the home and nearly 20% result in head injury, while 30% cause hip/leg fractures. Of all the available information, there is no clear indication on how long people remain “undiscovered” after a fall. Emergency medical services specialises in fall detection systems and monitoring with safeTwear, the world’s smallest, smartest, fall pendant. Weighing only 34 grams and about the size of a

ON BOARD Nieuw Amsterdam, many passengers press the elevator button, watch the doors open, peer in, nod appreciatively and then move away. It’s not that they don’t enjoy using the ship’s elevators to speed them from deck to deck, it’s just that they like to know what day it is. You see, the square mats in the floor of Nieuw Amsterdam’s elevators have the day of the week imprinted on them, changing daily of course, and it is perhaps the only way most passengers are going to keep abreast of things...and not just us seniors either. There is so much to do on board, the days pass in a flash of activity, pleasure and fun, and well...you do tend to forget what day it is. Cruising is big time. And getting bigger. By the minute. Almost daily we hear of another bigger, better, more wondrously equipped

Eating options becoming more ambitious
River cruising increasing in popularity
EATING is mandatory on a cruise, and the choices become more ambitious by the month. Many ships are replacing the traditional buffet with more genteel presentations such as The Market, The Larder, The Lido, where the food is just as plentiful but you are served by crew at various stations such as a carvery, salad bar, deli...that sort of thing. It’s so much

You can also book shore excursions online before you board. Assistance (wheel chairs) is available at check-in to glide you through the terminal and onto the ship with the minimum of fuss. Broken Hill - isolation
Architecture from the past shows a once-prosperous
By ERLE LEVEY
Broken Hill.
Approaching Broken Hill from Wentworth, western NSW.
Dry river bed south of Broken Hill, western NSW.
BROKEN Hill. “Why would you want to go there?” a mate had asked. “There’s nothing to see.” Exactly. That’s why I am driving along a straight road into the morning sunshine, the salt flats and patchy grasses. Broken Hill had always held intrigue but somehow was always that little bit out of reach. Isolated yet at the heart of much of Australia’s social and economic development. It is on the way from Brisbane to Adelaide, which is more than 500km to the south-west. Yet going from Sydney, just over 1000km away to the east, you are more likely to go through Balranald and Mildura. Melbourne is 725km to the south. A sense of mystery surrounds the place, having been featured in a swag of movies, from the confront-
ing 1971 drama Wake In Fright to the 1994 hit Priscilla Queen of the Desert, from the series of Mad Max movies to the recent Last Cab To Darwin with Michael Caton. Actor Chips Rafferty was born there. He starred in such films as Rats of Tobruk and in what was to be his last film, Wake In Fright. Then again, the Brushmen of the Bush rose to fame with the art work while based at Broken Hill, so it must have something going for it. The Indian Pacific stops there on its journey across Australia. And there is all that mining. Broken Hill is the “BH” in one of the world’s largest mining companies, BHP Billiton, which started in the city. Driving through the shimmering heat, the road sign indicates to watch for kangaroos for the next 150km.
Recognition of the historic value of early development
The thing about having “nothing to see” is that there is so much to see. Rock formations, red soil, the way the sunlight catches in the grasses, the different shades of green in the gum trees. You think of stopping to capture the moment on camera but then say to yourself, “Oh, I will do it
down the road a bit.” That’s just it. The moment has passed. The country changes. You become so aware of the slightest variations and realise how important it can be to life out here. Way off to the north-west, you notice some ranges ... long, low, blue. Is that it? Is that why it’s called Broken

gives sense of mystery town of classic buildings now National Trust listed
saw it become the first town National Trust listed.
Hill? Two mountain ranges broken in the middle? Watching Last Cab To Darwin, you cannot help but become fascinated by the houses of Broken Hill many of stone but also with corrugated iron walls. Driving into the city is just like the movie. The houses are reminders of the hard lives of the miners and the
harsh environment. So prosperous was Broken Hill in its heyday that architecture was centre stage. Major public and bank buildings are classic brick and stone. Recognition of the historic value of early development and retention of unique buildings and inland-city layout warranted a Nation-
al Trust listing of the entire city: the first in Australia. Unlike the rest of New South Wales, Broken Hill and the surrounding region observes the same time zone used in South Australia and the Northern Territory. This is because at the time of its foundations on mining, the only direct rail link was with Adelaide, not Sydney. Broken Hill is Australia’s longest-established mining city. In 1844, the explorer Charles Sturt saw and named the Barrier Range, while searching for an inland sea. The range was so named as it was a barrier to his progress north. Burke and Wills passed through the area in their famous 186061 expedition. At the time Sturt referred to a “Broken Hill” in his diary. Broken Hill’s massive ore body, which formed about 1800 million years ago, has
proved to be among the world’s largest silver-leadzinc mineral deposits. Pastoralists first began settling the area in the 1850s, with the main trade route to the area along the Darling River. The Broken Hill Proprietary Company (BHP) was founded by the Syndicate of Seven in 1885. Expanding from its modest beginnings BHP Billiton is now the world’s secondlargest mining/ energy company. Visit the mining museum and see just how from little things big things grow. Yet it was at nearby Silverton that a valuable seam of silver, lead and zinc was first discovered. Nothing to see in Broken Hill? Eyes wide open and take a look ... a week in this place is barely long enough. http://www.sunshinecoastdaily.com.au/news/unravelling-the-mystery

“MY mother is the only person I know who has to come down from handstand, when I ask her to go shopping with me.” Therese Ahern, 63-yearold mother of three and grandmother of five and half (there’s one on the way) and tour leader, laughs as she repeats the words of her daughter. Laugh or not – it’s true. Therese, a passionate lover of life began her headstands and spiritual practice after leaving a successful and multi-coloured career path some 12 years ago. Now she wants to share all she has learned so others can enjoy similar benefits. She said her yoga makes her feel like a child again and certainly her vigour, humour and natural vivaciousness contain an age-
less quality. Besides giving lessons, she conducts retreat/holidays to various places on the planet. The retreats have a yoga foundation, but with a host of qualified teachers they also offer guidance in health, lifestyle, and holistic well-being. “And there are very gentle yoga classes for beginners,” Therese said. The master meditator and travel leader said the tour encompassed her idea of a combined retreat/holiday. “Sometimes going on holiday doesn’t leave us really refreshed. Perhaps we have too much “fun” or we have to prioritise somebody else’s needs or because we haven’t found a way to effectively unwind.” She said even with the best of intentions we can be waylaid. “We have all heard of

Twelve years ago to restore her health she began to attend Buddhist retreat. “And for the last five years, I have gone on yoga holidays,” she said. Her combined experience has led her to start Taraji Journeys. “Journeys to give you the opportunity to truly connect with other like-minded people and make friendships for life.” The Yoga holidays + retreats also provide you with a safe option to travel solo. “You will find if you arrive alone you will definitely not leave alone unless that is your choice,” she said. Eco-friendly resort grows organically
Sampran Riverside - see daily performances showcasing Thai culture.
By PHIL HAWKES
IF YOU’VE been to Bangkok in recent years, you may have been perturbed by pollution, traffic and issues such as food security. These problems are not unique to Thailand, but now there’s a family-run group doing something to tackle environmental concerns as well as keeping traditional crafts and arts alive. This is Sampran Riverside, just an hour from downtown Bangkok embracing a resort hotel, Thai Village cultural centre and 10 acres of farming land which is now being cultivated to produce organic vegetables and fruit. It’s an ambitious

project which aims to grow enough food to feed not only the resort guests but to supply markets and hotels in Bangkok as well. In fact, the trend towards commercially sustainable and environmentally friendly pro-
ducts aligns naturally with Thai Buddhist culture and will undoubtedly grow. Visitors are encouraged to visit the farming land and learn about the crops, even sign up for some “handson” experience helping the
farmers with rice planting and other activities. Or as we did, you can simply tour the farm and sample some varieties of herbal tea (lemon grass is our favourite) and local fruits such as guava and lychees. This is what you might call an enjoyable grass-roots way to spend a day. At the resort’s Thai Village, you can take part in more than 10 arts and crafts workshops including traditional weaving, silk processing (straight from the silkworm cocoons), bamboo dancing (harder than it looks), pottery, umbrella painting, and making Thai

herbal compresses (warning: we were not allowed to bring these back into Australia). There are also daily performances showcasing Thai culture which include hilltribe dances, Thai boxing, a traditional wedding ceremony and an elephant show. These beautiful animals show how they work with logging and then enjoy spraying their mahouts (handlers) while being washed…all very amusing for the spectators! The resort’s rooms and lakeside villas are clean and comfortable, and the dining room provides a hearty
buffet breakfast plus an extensive all-day à la carte menu. Naturally the fruit and vegetables are as far as possible grown organically on the property. Thai cooking classes, herbal product workshops and rice barge river cruises can be arranged on request. Sampran Riverside is an eco-friendly oasis so close to the congestion of Bangkok, and is well worth a diversion from the big city for a couple of days at least… and if you have kids or grandkids in tow, it will be educational as well as entertaining. www.sampranriverside.com

He’s a wag, a talented writer, good businessman, a warm and witty personality, who welcomed me into these lively, literary sessions. In a relatively short period,I established a lifestyle pattern of regular croquet

Yes, Ubud is very, very busy, but taking time out to for trips into the mountain in Central Bali and snorkelling trip in North Bali brings down the hype. BALI is still beautiful – despite what the Bali-bashers say. In2014, I spent two months long service leave in a village near Ubud. For a solo post-55-year-old woman, completing Masters study, it turned out to be a great choice. Ubud locals have welcomed in an international community who seem to share a consciousness of yoga, natural healing and ecological ideals. These qualities mesh well with the three core Balinese elements of (Yadnya) ceremony, (tatwa) philosophy and (Susila) behaviour. Put those six qualities together and you have a very interesting place. But, the days of a quiet paradise have gone, there are ridiculous traffic jams, sometimes stupid prices and at one stage reports of attacks on European women on motorbikes. No, it is not paradise, but it is a very good part of the

community news Hardly plain Jane TO DESCRIBE global identity Jane Fonda as an actress, author and activist is to tell only a fraction of the story. Her story is an everchanging one. Now in her 70s, Jane is talking about age and longevity. As always, her message is loud, clear and full of meaning. Here is a transcript from her TED talk and a review of a book I have recently read. – Gail Forrer
EXTRACT OF JANE FONDA’S TED TALK THERE have been many revolutions over the last century, but perhaps none as significant as the longevity revolution. We are living on average today 34 years longer than our great-grandparents did. Think about that. That’s an entire second adult lifetime that’s been added to our lifespan. And yet, for the most part, our culture has not come to terms with what this means. We’re still living with the old paradigm of age as an arch. That’s the metaphor, the old metaphor. You’re born, you peak at midlife and decline into decrepitude. Age as pathology.
But many people today – philosophers, artists, doctors, scientists – are taking a new look at what I call the third act, the last three decades of life. They realise this is actually a developmental stage of life with its own significance – as different from midlife as adolescence is from childhood. And they are asking – we should all be asking – how do we use this time? How do we live it successfully? What is the appropriate new metaphor for aging? I’ve spent the last year researching and writing about this subject. And I have come to find that a more appropriate meta-
phor for aging is a staircase – the upward ascension of the human spirit, bringing us into wisdom, wholeness and authenticity. Age not at all as pathology; age as potential. And guess what? This potential is not for the lucky few. It turns out, most people over 50 feel better, are less stressed, are less hostile, less anxious. We tend to see commonalities more than differences. Some of the studies even say we’re happier. I don’t want to romanticise aging. Obviously, there’s no guarantee that it can be a time of fruition and growth. Some of it is a matter of luck. Some of it, ob-
viously, is genetic. One third of it, in fact, is genetic. And there isn’t much we can do about that. But that means that two-thirds of how well we do in the third act, we can do something about. We’re all born with spirit, all of us, but sometimes it gets tamped down beneath the challenges of life, violence, abuse, neglect. Perhaps our parents suffered from depression. Perhaps they weren’t able to love us beyond how we performed in the world. Perhaps we still suffer from a psychic pain, a wound. Perhaps we feel that many of our relationships have not had closure. And so we can feel un-
finished. Perhaps the task of the third act is to finish up the task of finishing ourselves. Perhaps the central purpose of the third act is to go back and to try, if appropriate, to change our relationship to the past. If we can go back and alter our relationship, re-vision our relationship to past people and events, neural pathways can change. If we can go back and redefine ourselves and become whole, this will create a cultural shift in the world, and it will give an example to younger generations so that they can reconceive their own lifespan. Full talk at www.ted.com
Third act in an incredible life full of loss and tough lessons My Life So Far By Jane Fonda Random House, New York, 2005 MY LIFE SO FAR by Jane Fonda.
❝
If we are brave enough to face, then speak our truth, we can change and be set free.
On December 21, 1996, actress Jane Fonda celebrated her 59th birthday and decided that her first two acts were over and now she was onto the third and she was ready to write about it. Jane Fonda’s biography depicts a person aware of her surroundings, overly aware of her shortfalls, under aware of her success and totally daunted by it all. She was born with every chance and no chance. Her mother committed suicide before she was a teenager and her family didn’t reveal the circumstances of her mother’s death. Her father, although adept at playing sensitive roles, was unable to communicate with his children. Childhood trauma cannot go untreated and Jane suf-
fered three decades of untreated bulimia nervosa. She details her marriages, not just the surface issues, but also her underlying motivations. In the same vein, she takes us back in time to her movies and in doing that she visits the social standards, the trends of the time. Her journey from the pretty prom girl, to the blue jeaned anti-Vietnam demonstrator is both privileged and raw. Her determination to understand the meaning of the war, led her to working with the enlisted men, thus another label emerged: “GI Jane.” From the servicemen she gained these lessons: “I learned that although we may enter the heart of darkness. If we are brave enough to face, then speak our truth, we can change and be set free.” Her high profile, gave her a

special position and she used it to educate and inform the American public
about a war she believed, they should no be in. It is a harrowing story of polluted
politics, unethical world shattering decisions resulting in cruel and unmitigated carnage. She details specific conversations recorded from stars of the times – President Richard Nixon, Henry Kissinger and others. She travels to Vietnam. The CIA follows her. The war ends, she is vindicated, but she has found her soul in understanding and supporting human beings from all walks of life. Importantly that also includes herself. She explores and explains her life in three parts and she names them, in order: Gathering, Seeking and Beginning. Ultimately, she quotes the words of the Sufi poet Rumi: “The alchemy of a changing life is the only truth.” Certainly, she says: “My own life is proof that flux is often creative, enlivening”.
A gripping read through the hoods of Naples YES, I am in the gritty 1950’s Italian neighbourhood, the poverty is palpable, raw anger slices like a knife through the coarse, unspoken, but clearly defined roles of men, women, mother, father and children. This is the complicated world of the poor and the soon to be rich, the uneducated and soon to be educated, subservient women sounding out new dominate voices.

A disparate world of people on a bumpy, brutal ride, test driving a myriad of political vehicles as they seek to find comfort and meaning in a modern world. But, at least one tradition remains in this revolution – negotiation through brutality. The most brutal in families, in business, in friendships, in love, makes the cutting edge. Beyond these surfaces, the feminist story of role and
identity is explored, enacted and theorised into a riveting philosophy. In a powerful language, Italian author Elena Ferranti records history and households through the fiery friendship of two women. Her honesty is as sharp as the neighbourhood fights and fascist beatings. She witnesses the cycles of life – birth, love, death and places them within swirling minutia of a human
thought and action that is forever hurtling out of time and space. In the four books, the protagonist’s cycle through dramatic character developments, their lives and those of surrounding society, they veer onto military, industrial and academic pathways, but the contours of their original shape remain defining criteria in their choices. New Halcyon clubhouse opening
EXCITEMENT is mounting for the home owners at Halcyon Glades as construction nears completion on the multimillion dollar Recreation Club and surrounding resort-style facilities. Designed by awardwinning architects DC8 Studio, the Recreation Club has been nicknamed the Long House referring to a traditional multi-use building designed to foster a sense of community. Project director Marie Cone said that Halcyon Glades’ impressive 5-Star offering was proving popular with over 50s looking to downsize and upgrade their lifestyle. “Our home owners love that they now have more freedom. One day they could be meeting up
with friends for a game of tennis and the next, taking their caravan out to embark on another adventure,” said Marie. The Long House will be the biggest Recreation Club to be delivered at a Halcyon community to date and features an indoor gym, library, cinema, massage room, craft room, fireplace, dance-floor, kitchen with bar, function space and additional outdoor area. Within the Lifestyle and Recreational Precinct, home owners can make use of the 25-metre heated swimming pool, championship sized bowling green, communal garden, floodlit tennis court with pavilion and Pickle Ball court – a small court combination of

The challenge is to rearrange a crossword which has been broken into 25 sections. One letter has been given to get you started. Work out which 3x3 square fits in with that letter and write in the letters. You can also shade the black squares if you find it helpful. After completing the first 3x3 area, work out which square joins on to it, and continue until you have made a complete crossword.
