Time to celebrate
SENIORS Week from August 13-21 is a great time of celebration for Gold Coasters aged over 55. Dozens of events are on the Seniors Week program, all across the coast. Fascinating historical displays are planned, such as the Romance of Rail at Kirra Hill and a Gold Coast Hinterland Heritage Museum exhibition. The themed week is a perfect opportunity for seniors to exercise their imaginations and broaden their horizons. Social interaction is known to be beneficial in our later years, and there’s plenty of that on offer in August.

ELVIS impersonator Pete Memphis has recently come back to the Gold Coast from a place that’s dear to his heart – the King’s own home, Graceland. His trip was a prize won on Channel Nine’s Today show. As VIP guests, Pete and his wife Lyn had Graceland to themselves at times, minus the many tourists. They stayed at the Heartbreak Hotel close by. A highlight of the trip was meeting Elvis’s stepbrother, Billy Stanley, who lived at Graceland for 17 years. "We had dinner and drinks with him," Pete said. "I asked him lots of questions. All Things Legal? How to obtain a copy of a will wHen someone dies
When someone dies there are usually family members, friends and other interested parties who may want to see a copy of the Will.
HISTORY lovers can learn more about the heritage of the Gold Coast Hinterland with the help of volunteers at a fascinating range of displays. Gold Coast Hinterland Heritage Museum displays include the Nerang railway station, with its cameras, a school room, railway memorabilia and saddlery. Okey House depicts the 1930s era and Franklin House a later period, the 1950s. Museum secretary Anne Panitz says there is also a slab hut onsite, and the Big Shed which houses a display of machinery, a butcher and grocery shop. “Most of our displays are from families from the area,” she said. “History is a passion with them all and we love to share tales with our visitors. “Visitors enjoy going back in time and remembering items which they themselves used or perhaps belonged to grandparents. “We are open for
Under the strict common law in past years, only the Executors or personal representatives of the estate were entitled to see the Will. Even if you were named as a beneficiary in the Will, this did not necessarily mean that you were entitled to see a copy of it. However, most Australian states have enacted legislation to allow people to obtain a copy of a deceased person’s Will or inspect it. Section 33Z of the Succession Act 1981 (Qld) and Section 54 of the Succession Act 2006 (NSW) make specific provision for certain categories of people and entities to obtain a copy of the Will or inspect it from those people who have possession of the Will or copies of it. Any person who has “possession or control” of the Will must allow those persons to inspect the Will or give them a certified copy of same. Whoever provides a copy of the Will is entitled to payment of their reasonable expenses but these are limited to the out of pocket expenses of producing copies, postage, etc. They are not allowed to charge any professional fees for providing this copy even if they are lawyers or accountants. Many people think that when someone dies there will be a formal “reading of the Will”. This is an urban myth and it is rarely carried out in modern times. The categories of people who are entitled to a copy of the Will are as follows:• Anyone named in the Will (whether or not they are named as a beneficiary). • Anyone who is named or referred to in an earlier will as a beneficiary (even if they are not named in the latest Will). • A parent, guardian, spouse, de facto partner or child of the deceased. • A parent or guardian of any child referred to in the Will or who would be entitled to a share of the deceased’s estate if they had died intestate (i.e. without leaving a Will). • Any person who would be entitled to a share of the estate if the deceased had died intestate. • Any person (including a creditor) who has or may have a claim at law or in equity against the estate. • Any attorney who held an enduring power of attorney given by the deceased. • Any person or entity who had formal management of the deceased’s affairs (e.g. Public Trust). • Any person entitled to bring a claim against the estate for provision (normally such a person would be covered by the categories above). As long as you fall into one of these categories, not only can you ask for a copy of the most recent Will of the deceased, you can also ask for copies of any previous Wills and/or Codicils, parts of Wills or any ‘documents’ purporting to be a Will. This would include recordings, iPhone Wills etc. Normally the person holding the original Will is the Executor of the deceased person’s estate and appointed in the will itself. In many cases the Will is held by private solicitors who acted for the deceased or it can also be held by the Public Trust Office in Queensland or the NSW Trustee and Guardian. Sometimes original Wills are left in the personal papers of the deceased and are in the control of their appointed Executors (this could be their surviving spouse, adult children or friends). In many cases, beneficiaries in an estate have difficulties obtaining a copy of the Will from the appointed Executors. Executors sometimes withhold a copy of the Will purely out of spite or simply refuse to cooperate and use their position as Executor to exercise some form of power over the beneficiaries. This can often happen with adult children who do not get on or a second spouse or defacto partner of the deceased dealing with adult children of the deceased.

community as well as school groups by appointment – otherwise Sunday 10am–2pm.” An added attraction for Seniors Week will be a display by Antique Auto Cars at the Gold Coast Hinterland Heritage Museum, 238 Mudgeeraba Rd, Mudgeeraba, on Wednesday, August 17.
The museum will be open 10am–2pm. “Singing Swagman” Col Boundy will entertain. Seniors will be admitted free for the day, while adult admission is usually $5. Phone 0407 694 653 or 07 5596 3165, or email anne@panitz. com.au for more information.

LIFESTYLE OF RELAXATION
If you fall into any of the above categories, you should attempt to obtain a copy through the usual means but if this fails, write a formal letter of demand in accordance with the relevant section of the legislation. If they refuse to provide you with a copy of the Will, you should seek legal advice in relation to bringing an appropriate application to obtain a copy of the Will (if the Executor has unreasonably refused a request resulting in Court proceedings, costs of the Court application could be awarded against the Executor personally).
Palm Lake Resort Luxury resort style living
In many cases Executors who refuse to provide a copy of the Will or details of the estate assets have something to hide. They may have illegally converted assets to their own use or simply don’t want to give someone their fair share of the estate. Most experienced lawyers who act in these matters will often accept claims on a ‘no win no fee basis’. We recommend people obtain legal advice as soon as possible as there are time limits for bringing claims (6 months from date of death to give notice in QLD and 12 months in NSW). Quite often the most difficult part is getting a copy of the Will!

He reckons he’s mellowed but he’s still singing the same songs Gail Forrer
AT 70 years of age, Australian bush balladeer, national treasure and boat rocker John Williamson reckons that, like most folk his age, he’s mellowed. When it comes to protests in 2016 he says mildly: “I leave that to the younger folks.” Nevertheless, there are qualifiers: He still wants Australia to be a republic and have its own flag. And, at every concert, the voice of his convictions is expressed through his classic songs with same fervour and beauty. Take the 1990 lyrics of A Flag of Our Own: “ ‘Cause this is Australia and that’s where we’re from. We’re not Yankee sidekicks or second-class Poms, And tell the Frogs what they can do with their bomb, Oh we must have a flag of our own.”
On his website he says: “The nature of Australia being represented on our nation’s flag is something I have always been very passionate about. “I have dreamed for many years that our nation’s banners

SOUTHPORT Yacht Club will officially open its 70th sailing season with a spectacular “sail past” and blessing of the fleet on Saturday, September 3. Up to 70 vessels will be gathered in the area between Sea World and the Southport Bridge at about 2.30pm. Commodore Kerry Noyes, the first female commodore of the club, and longtime member Commander Mathew Doornbos, of the Royal Australian Navy, will acknowledge the salute from the fleet.
“Southport Yacht Club follows in the tradition of yacht clubs around the world which are deep in customs and traditions initiated from the Royal Navy some 200 years ago,” Cdre Kerry said. “Our sail past is an opportunity to see the experience and strength of our club and it demonstrates a visible message to the surrounding community of our most important date on our yachting calendar.” Kerry says the sail past has become the event for which members get their boats ready for the
coming season. “We put on our dress whites, navy jackets and nautical fashions, display our nautical flags and decor, and swab the decks, ready to celebrate the opening of the season with fellow yacht club members and guests,” she said. Festivities run from 1–6pm. Non-boaties are welcome to view the sail past. TS Tyalgum Naval Cadets will perform a sunset ceremony and firing of the cannon about 5pm.

Reuse, recycle to find new use UPCYCLE compiled by NICKY NORMAN HERE’S some innovative tips. Turn CDs into coasters – stick two together and paste felt underneath. Melt the remains of a lipstick together with a small pot of lip balm – makes a great lip gloss. Grandkids love a tin can phone. Take off the lids and tie together two coffee tins with a long piece of string. Create ice blocks for your esky – fill up old milk cartons with water and freeze them. Want to keep the kids amused? Use empty roll-on deodorant bottles as paint pens for small children. Wash the plastic ball and bottle, fill with paint and replace the ball and lid. To store, keep it upside down with the lid tightly fastened. Get a worm farm and feed all of your food scraps. One kilogram of worms can eat and recycle 1kg of food every day, giving nutritious worm castings for plants and veggies. Put your steel bottle tops and jam jar lids into an old steel can. When the tin is half full, squash the top together so the contents are compacted before recycling. Open the bottom of a used milk carton and plant a tree seedling
inside. The carton will protect your seedling and then degrade as it grows. Going on a picnic? Bring home your cans and bottles to recycle. Save your corks to use them as a paint stamp, or glue them to some timber to make a corkboard. Place clear plastic lids under oil jars or aerosols to prevent oil and rust marks on shelving. Make your own gift wrap: Wrap your presents in the comics pages from your local newspaper, magazines or comics. Kids (and even adults) love it. Temporarily store food scraps in an old icecream tub, before putting them on to your worm farm or compost. Pour old cooking oil and fat into a used milk carton or jar and put it out in the rubbish. It clogs the drains if put down the sink. Old wet-wipe boxes make great string dispensers – try it out. Get creative making greeting cards from old ones, or postcards, photos, stamps, pretty paper and more. For more card recycling ideas, visit Festive Recycling.PlanetArk.org Use old jeans to patch other jeans. Save old lip balm pots and small toiletry containers. Refill from your everyday toiletries for travelling. For more information on recycling activities for home or work, visit www.RecyclingWeek. PlanetArk.org.

CHUTNEYS, pickles and relish are the flavour of the month. Chutneys and relishes are wonderful addition to a steak dinner, sandwiches or even the humble sausage. The most important way to start is with good quality produce, clean jars and lots of spices. Adding spice can change the flavour – use curry powder, mustard seeds, coriander or turmeric. Relish is cooked, pickled, or chopped vegetable or fruits, usually enjoyed as a condiment. Chutney, an Indian sauce, can vary from a tomato relish to a ground peanut garnish or a

Seniors angst surrounds superannuation change
SUPERANNUATION changes are broadly fair, but have been poorly communicated, according to National Seniors. Australians are still grappling with what the changes – from the $1.6 million tax-free limit to the $10,000 reduction in the concessional cap - will mean to them. National Seniors’ chief advocate Sarah Saunders said generous top-end concessions represented money better spent in areas like health and aged care. "But rushing straight from the May budget to the noise of an election campaign was not the ideal way to ‘sell’ them," she said.
"People have had very little time to unpack the changes and there’s been a lot of confusion. "We welcome the roll-over of concessional caps and widening access to partner contributions, and the $1.6 million tax-free cap is reasonable." But Sarah said some angst had been expressed over the reduced concessional contributions caps, particularly from women returning to work late in life who used these to build their savings. "Ultimately, it’s important to have certainty around the retirement income system and changes should be
careful, open to discussion and not driven from a single quarter," she said. "It’s only fair that people who’ve planned, based upon a particular set of rules, have time to adjust, otherwise confidence in the entire system is undermined." A more worrying issue among older Australians is the pension asset change, due to take effect from January 2017. "Combined with historically low interest rates, the assets change will see self-funded retirees near the thresholds living off less than a full pensioner," Sarah said.

Look after yourself and get left behind backbone of Australia’s progress after World War II and contributed much to the advancement and security of the nation,” Norm said. He feels that more consideration could be given to those investing in term deposits, the interest of which is dramatically affected by the current policies of the Reserve Bank. Norm says a bank oversight is the effect its current policy is having on the Federal Government’s revenue-raising capacity, as he and the many other self-funded retirees find
their incomes drastically reduced. “Lower incomes mean lower taxation revenue, which in turn means less money for the government to meet its welfare obligations,” he said. “Unless the Reserve Bank Board with the co-operation of the Federal Government can ease the negative effect its current policies are having on self-funded retirees, I can see some divesting themselves of liquid assets, and acquiring million-dollar homes so they too can take advantage of the

■ National Seniors president Mr Michael O’Neill said this month’s decision to drop the cash rate by 25 basis points to 2.50% would see the people relying on income from cash investments bear the down side of the cut at a time when costs, including electricity, petrol and healthcare, continued to rise. “The decision increases the pressure on people already struggling with reduced returns from their deposits,” he said.

MANY self-funded retirees are finding it difficult to come to terms with the Reserve Bank’s policy of continually lowering the official cash rate as a tool to stimulate the economy. While this may help home loan borrowers and business, it has an adverse effect on self-funded retirees. Retired accountant Norm Barrington, 87, has dubbed self-funded retirees “the forgotten race”. “These are the people who went through a recession, saved diligently, were the

GOLD COAST WEEK 2016 IS PROUDLY SUPPORTED BY LENDLEASE
Honouring our diversity
inside EMBRACING AGEING
Your guide to Senior Week events together with information, services, and products to enhance your lifestyle.
COTA aims for inclusive views of older people
SENIORS Week provides an opportunity to bring all Queenslanders together, through events and activities, to celebrate the contributions seniors make within their communities. Many older people assist their families with caring responsibilities while being actively involved in their communities through volunteering and passing on their knowledge and experience to others. Seniors Week aims to: ■ Improve community attitudes towards older people and ageing. ■ Facilitate community participation and activity by older people, including those from indigenous and culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. ■ Enhance community connections and inter-generational relationships. COTA (Council on the Ageing) Queensland co-ordinates Seniors Week.
DEAR Queenslanders, This year, Seniors Week is on for young and old, from Saturday August 13 to Sunday 21. Over nine days, folk of all ages will gather for the state’s largest seniors’ celebration. How will you celebrate? Did you know that events range from information days and expos, mini Olympics, morning and afternoon teas,
dances and balls, Mayoral lunches, art shows, forums and so much more. So check out the diary of events in your area, join in and have some fun. Selfishly, I love this time of year as I
get to connect with wonderfully diverse folk and hear their stories. Stories of travel and adventure, stories about young love, and stories about a more simple time before technology. I hope you can do the same. — Lisa Hodgkinson Seniors Week Coordinator COTA Queensland
A lot to celebrate Living the best life we can HELLO readers, It’s on again, the week when we shine a light on our own demographic, the people we are, the things we love to do, together with new and existing services, products and technologies available to us through business and government agencies. In this special edition dedicated to Seniors Week, we have contacted as many people as possible to create and present a calendar of events to connect you with what is happening in your local area and further afield. Take your time and you may well discover a new pursuit. Check through the following pages and you will find there is a whole world of people out there waiting for you with an open invitation. Sometimes we build on the groups, activities and friends we already have, at other times we yearn to discover new areas of life. This special week can be a time for friendly get-togethers or a time to explore new pursuits.
Have you ever thought of yourself as an artist, craftsperson or even a volunteer for a worthy cause. Perhaps you are thinking of a new activity, but not sure whether it’s tai chi, golf or the gym? You might just like to join up with some like-minded people? Whatever you like to do, you will find plenty of inspiration in through these pages. While Seniors Week is for all of us, what we aim to do is respect and express the individuality of each person. We are the same, but we are different and this week gives us all the opportunity to share the big picture of our generation. As always we would love to hear your stories, to see your pictures and I hope this edition adds to one aspect of your life. Happy Seniors Week. — Gail Forrer — Group Editor

SENIORS Newspapers Qld & NSW network are proud to celebrate Queensland Seniors Week, running from Saturday, August 13, to Sunday, August 21.
Meet the Six Pack
UNITED by lawn bowls, six Lendlease village residents have been coming together every Tuesday afternoon for the past decade to enjoy a spot of afternoon ‘men’s time’. The tradition began more than 10 years ago when Bill, Bram and Norm decided to start bowling with another former resident after their weekly organised fitness class. The Six Pack gets its name from the number of gents involved, but they explain that six is just an easy number to organise a weekly game. The real reason for the name stems from a post-match ritual. “We thought it wouldn’t be a bad idea for someone to bring along a six pack for the end of the game,” Bill said. So, in typical Aussie spirit, weekly catch-ups are transformed into a relaxing game of bowls, lots of laughs and an ice-cold beer.
BOWLING BOND: (From left) Richard Saunders, Bram Lang, Basil (Baz) Binge, Bill Clemow and Norman Brailey. (Absent: George Hannaford).
“It’s something regular that we look forward to and all feel very lucky to have formed such great friendships in the later part of our lives,” Bram says.
When asked if they’ve thought about who’s next in line to join the group, The Six Pack calmly shrugs off the question. “Shall we say, there are very few ways to leave our club, you know what they
are, don’t you?,” Bill said. “You’re in for life.” For more information about Lendlease Retirement Living please call 1800 550 550.

Meet ageing challenges with some clever food choices EVERYDAY food choices have a great influence on the course of ageing and, in some cases, there are misconceptions as to what the right choices might be. Some great advice on how to cheat ageing and help the body meet those challenges we age comes from dietitian and author Ngaire Hobbins. In her books Eat to Cheat Aging and Eat to Cheat Dementia, Ms Hobbins offers advice to stave off dementia, diabetes, frailty, cognitive decline and to stay healthy, active and independent longer. Ms Hobbins is passionate about encouraging people to relish great food in order to get the most out of life. Having worked in various areas of nutrition, including hospitals and in
private practice, Ms Hobbins spent many years within the food industry developing clear communication with producers to teach consumers about quality and value of their food products. She said too many seniors were unwittingly starving themselves into ill health and physical decline, with many older Australians lacking sufficient protein and vital nutrients. “Too little protein especially, when combined with a sedentary lifestyle, is slowly robbing too many older Australians of muscle, leading to frailty and disability,” Hobbins explained. “That, combined with too few antioxidants, vitamins and minerals in real food, is hampering their brains and other body.

“As a clinical dietitian advising older patients, I have seen it too many times – people 65 years plus with diets more in keeping with people 20 years younger. “They present with atrophied, wasted muscles and live within an endless, vicious loop – they lack strength so they do less physically which leads to even less strength and a seemingly endless array of complaints and illnesses that result from inadequate diets.” According the Hobbins, the burden of poor eating extends into the already overstretched health systems. “That burden includes longer hospital stays, extended healing and recovery times, increased chance of infection, general illness and falls,” she said. “Many of these problems can be
reduced by just getting people to eat what ageing bodies really need. As Ms Hobbins noted: “Eating well might not be able to save everyone from dementia, but it will certainly help minimise the weight and muscle loss that makes the illness worse.”
Top 10 affordable protein sources: ■ Canned tuna. ■ Eggs. ■ Pork mince. ■ Chicken breasts. ■ Fresh or frozen salmon. ■ Peanut butter. ■ Greek yoghurt. ■ Full cream milk. ■ Canned asparagus. ■ Whey protein.

CRUISING SECRETS
❚ Picky about your bedding? Ask if the liner has an egg crate mattress topper, top sheets or other pillow. ❚ Feeling queasy? Ask room service for green apples and crackers before running to the pharmacy – they might provide seasickness meds for free. ❚ Day 1 is crucial – many liners offer free minutes if you sign up for an internet package; most ship spas offer discounts for first-day and port-day treatments. Most people dine in the main dining room or buffet on the first night of the cruise and many haven’t discovered the specialty restaurants yet. ❚ Any showers, saunas and stream rooms outside of the fancy thermal suites is free and can often mean access to more clean towels, fancy toiletries and bigger shower stalls.
... and there’s a specially dedicated cruise just for seniors over 55
Cruises are popular travel option for many seniors.

AHOY seniors: The seas are calling over 55s with more cruise ships catering for senior travel. There’s no need to worry about reaching a certain age, married or single, cruising caters for them all. Cruise choices are relaxing or as active as travellers wish, with a choice of dedicated seniors, adults-only cruise, or simply an open-aged cruise. Want to learn the tango or make pottery? Would you prefer cruising to Alaska rather than the beach? Cruising experts say longer cruises are definitely popular with guests aged 55 years and older, while trips with shorter itineraries often have many multi-generational groups. Bordered to the east, by the Coral Sea and Pacific Ocean,
Queensland is a wonderful place from which to set sail, with reach from Brisbane in the south, and as far north as Cairns and Yorkey’s Knob. Demand for cruising among not only seniors but all age groups has seen P&O Cruises commit to the Queensland cruise market, with a major multi-million-dollar refit for its Brisbane- based ship Pacific Dawn set to include a new state-of-the-art waterpark. The 2000-guest ship will be refurbished in February 2017. The refit comes as P&O prepares for its biggest year of Queensland cruising, with two ships sailing from Brisbane year round. Between them, Pacific Dawn and Pacific Aria will offer a record 108 cruises to holidaymakers in 2017 – up from 98 cruises this year.

We see attend traffic accidents all the time and we see the emotional side of things from the family don’t understand is the impact a death from a road accident has on relatives and the community and how easily it can be avoided. "We thought we would do our part by putting up these billboards with a message for people to slow down and drive
safely." Small touches, like a corsage for the deceased’s partner, and ensuring floral tributes are sent to a nursing home or church upon conclusion of a funeral service, provide comfort during this emotional time. Staff touch base with family members well after the bill is settled, and offer the services of a qualified grief counsellor and access to a comprehensive grief library. The shock of losing a loved one can leave you sleepless, which is why Newhaven Funeral’s qualified funeral directors are available on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Those overwhelmed with the prospect of arranging a funeral service should rest assured knowing they do not need to adhere to a specific time frame and, once you’ve spoke with a funeral director, you will feel a little more at ease with the funeral burden is eliminated.

BODIES are designed to be used. Being healthy, physically active and socially engaged is essential for health and wellbeing, especially as the years’ tick by. According to Queensland Health, being physically active is essential for health and wellbeing, helping people keep hold of their independence into old age and minimising the impact of illness and injury. Essential elements of physical activity include strength, balance,
endurance and flexibility. While age can affect your strength and balance, regular physical activity most days will improve this, and it is never too late to start. At least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity across a range of activities on most, preferably all, days will help keep heart, lungs, muscles and bones working well. Government research shows exercise programs including strength and balance can reduce falls rates in older people by 17%. Positive benefits to
prevent falls were seen after doing two, two-hour sessions of strength and balance exercises for 25 weeks. Joining a local group or taking part in regular social activities with family, friends and neighbours is a good way to keep involved and connected with the community. Queensland Health offers a range of guides and tips for seniors to stay active; from everyday guides to active living to check lists and exercise tips. Visit their website at www.health.qld.gov.au

GOLD COAST WEEK 2016 IS PROUDLY SUPPORTED BY LENDLEASE
Celebrating Seniors Week and Hearing Awareness Week Listen up and check for a common condition Seniors give so much to our society, their life skill and experience provides a wealth of knowledge to pass on to younger generations. Their willingness to participate in our community and the enormous contribution to our economy are undeniable. We would like to give a big thank you to our senior community. One of the biggest challenges experienced by seniors is hearing loss, over fifty percent of persons aged over the age of sixty-five and seventy percent of over seventy year olds experience some degree of hearing loss. Hearing Awareness Week is 21st to 27th August. Hearing loss is a very common condition that affects people of all ages. Many people with hearing loss choose to keep their problems to themselves. But there is nothing to hide or be ashamed of, hearing loss is a very common condition and affects people of all ages. However, it is important to have your hearing checked and explore all of the possible avenues of rehabilitation that are available. Don't delay, hearing is very important to your wellbeing. Do you have a hearing loss? In most cases hearing loss is a gradual process. The average person doesn't even notice it is happening until one day they realise they missed the phone or the doorbell, or family members begin to complain about the volume of the radio and TV. As hearing loss progresses, a lot of the sounds of life begin to fade like the rustle of leaves in the breeze, bird song and music isn't as clear as it used to be. As a person's hearing continues to deteriorate the sound cues of speech are affected. Soft high pitched sound become inaudible and confusion between words starts. Many words sound the same leading to confusion. Untreated hearing loss can lead to social

withdrawal and depression. Ask yourself these questions • Does your family complain that the TV volume is too loud? • Do you find yourself frequently asking people to repeat themselves? • Do you have trouble understanding women and children? • Do you feel that people sound muffled or they’re mumbling? • Do you have difficulty hearing conversations in noisy situations like restaurants, meetings or conferences? • Do you have ringing in your ears? • Do you often misunderstand what’s being asked? If you answered yes to some of these questions you may have a hearing problem. Getting help Surveys have shown that most people with a significant hearing loss wait several years before finally seeking help. This may be partly due to a reluctance to admit there is a problem, but it is most certainly related to the gradual nature of most hearing loss and the length of time it takes for an individual to realize that a hearing loss exists. When people finally try hearing instruments, they are usually amazed to discover how much they had been missing! The sooner you become aware that you may have a hearing loss, the sooner you can have a thorough hearing evaluation and begin to benefit from the appropriate treatment. Don't put it off If the fitting of a hearing aid is delayed, the brain forgets how to hear, not even a hearing aid will be able to transform the incoming sound signals into understandable information. This means that the brain no longer recognises ordinary everyday sounds and noises, such as the hum of the refrigerator or the computer. The brain must learn to hear all over again. If you have any doubt about your hearing, you should seek professional advice. Come to our Hearing Awareness Open Days on August 23 and 24 Entire Hearing Care will be hosting Hearing Awareness open days for the public at our Varisty Lakes clinic, we are offering: • A free hearing health evaluation • A free trial of the latest miniature hearing technology with a cup coffee or tea General Manger Vaughan Grigor says "this is an excellent opportunity to find out how your hearing is and experience for yourself the improvement that modern hearing technology can make to your lifestyle." Places are limited, please book your appointment today. Call us on 5575 8999 to secure your position and avoid disappointment. If you have a hearing problem, we have your solution right here! Create your way to longevity DANCING, painting, playing the piano, weaving, yoga, clothing design– all of these activities fit under the umbrella of Creative Ageing’. Dr Barbara Bagan noted in her article, Ageing – What’s Art got to do with it, that throughout history, artists have known art provides benefits for both the creator and viewer. Current studies in the fields of art therapy, music therapy and other creative modalities confirm art can affect individuals in positive ways by inducing both psychological and physiological healing. We know exercising our creative selves enhances quality of life and nurtures overall well-being. We all are creative – not just a select few. Less well known is the effectiveness of incorporating expressive arts into programs for older adults and patients who are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and other chronic degenerative diseases. Recent clinical research validates what some professionals and others who work with older adults have known for years – making art is an essential, vital component of activities that offer a wide range of health benefits. Several studies show that art can reduce the depression and anxiety that are often symptomatic of chronic diseases.
QUICK FACTS
❚ Music and art stimulate the brain in the areas Alzheimer’s cannot touch, bypassing the debilitating disease and often providing relief. ❚ Learning jazz dance can improve balance in older women, whose main cause of injuries are falls. ❚ Arts and crafts, music, meditation, home repair, and reading stimulates the mind, reduces the effects of stress related diseases and slows cognitive decline. ❚ Individual piano instruction may serve as an effective intervention for age-related cognitive decline. Other research demonstrates that the imagination and creativity of older adults can flourish in later life, helping them to realise unique, unlived potentials, even when suffering from Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease. The term Creative Ageing has been attributed to Dr Gene Cohen, who coined it in his book The Creative Age; Awakening. Dr Cohen wrote: “We see it (creativity) easily in the young child who turns a bed into a sailing ship and pillows into fortresses. We readily admire it in the brilliant pianist or determined inventor. “We celebrate it in the ingenious efforts of survival by those caught in the

path of nature’s fury or the storms of war and other human cruelty. But we tend to overlook the same creative energy when, transformed by age and experience, it leads a retired chemist to become an education activist, or prompts a once travel-shy home-maker to take her first vacation abroad.” Last year, an Australian Festival acknowledged the global creative ageing movement through a brilliant showcase of talent in Sydney.
The Creative Ageing Sydney festival featured the benefits of creative ageing in terms of health, fitness, well-being and quality of life. It is now one of many nation-wide initiatives that sees Australia follows in a global movement that recognises the creative potential in all of us. “This creative spirit has the power to change our lives at every age, and to do so in quite different ways as we get older,” Dr Cohen said.

IT IS on for young and old during Seniors’ Week 2016, with Queensland aged care provider, PresCare, inviting both the young, and young at heart, to celebrate being more connected. With participation across six residential care facilities and ten community care regions, PresCare chief executive officer, Greg Skelton, is confident each PresCare client will have the chance to discover new passions, and reignite old ones between August 13 to 21. "Being more connected is at the heart of what we do. This week is about bridging the gap, creating opportunities for socialising and keeping our clients connected to their families, communities
PresCare has been looking after Queensland Seniors’ health and spiritual needs for over 85 years. It is our mission to support people to live the lives they want…keeping them more connected to their communities, and enabling them to continue to enjoy the activities that are most important to them.
and care services," Mr Skelton said. Catering to mind, body and spirit, the week boasts a vibrant program that will see clients connecting through art, cooking, exercise, and games. "Closing the age gap is essential to reducing social isolation within our aged communities. There is a lot that both groups can learn from one another as they swap stories, and the connections that we’ve seen form in the past are very special," Mr Skelton said. With more than 85 years’ experience looking after older Australians, PresCare’s team of dedicated staff and volunteers continually strive to meet their clients’ wishes and needs, keeping them engaged and socially active.
PresCare provides support through our residential care; inhome care services, which include food services and personal and domestic care; mobility and disability services; community and social services, and more. 13–21 AUGUST 2016

Virtual tour shares the news Retirement village Serene Living makes the process of finding a suitable lifestyle easy Virtual reality goggles It used to be the case that if you were looking for a new home you had to be prepared for a fair bit of driving and a lot of legwork in order to find exactly what you wanted. Technology is changing all of that and for Retirement Village Serene Living, embracing the new world of Virtual Reality tours is making the process of finding a dream place to retire to a whole lot easier A smart phone and pair of virtual reality goggles enables interested parties to take a tour of the apartments and walk around the village without having to leave the comfort of a chair, making the initial stage of looking for somewhere to retire so much more interesting than just flicking through a brochure. Serene Living recently travelled to Sydney for the annual Retirement Expo and, although miles away from the village, were able to give visitors a feel for the vibe and communal spaces that existing residents get to enjoy. Marketing manager Ricci Norrie is excited to be able to not only use the googles to make things easier for those looking to downsize but also help people experience something that they might have ordinarily missed out on because of timeframes or distance to travel “We are about to embed a virtual tour onto our website to enable people to sit at home with a cup of tea and look into the building and apartments and really get a feel for the place before they even have to leave home, hopefully saving
them lots of time and energy,” she said. “The technology behind the goggles and virtual tour is amazing, it is hard to believe you aren’t actually physically there, and everyone who tried it at the expo was just blown away. Obviously looking for somewhere to retire to is one of the biggest and most important decisions most people will make, so we have made every effort to make that not only as easy as possible but equally as enjoyable.” Serene Olympics Inspired by the upcoming Rio Olympics and its oldest athlete, the residents at Serene Living are about to embark on
their own Olympic Games to prove that age is but a number. An Adelaide woman selected for her 12th Paralympic Games will be the oldest athlete competing in Rio, but believes she still has what it takes to bring home gold. At 73-years-old, air rifle shooter Libby Kosmala said age did not faze her. "I don't feel like the oldest athlete," she said. "I think it keeps me fit, it keeps me mentally alert because it's 95% mental and 5% physical." The residents at Serene Living also understand the importance of not only
keeping fit and healthy but also mentally alert, and many take part in a very full social and exercise calendar designed to keep them at their best regardless of age. For Serene staff the idea of then combining the calendar with some Olympic events and dividing the residents in to country teams seemed too much fun to pass up. “We have a broad array of nationalities amongst our residents, all who just happened to be countries competing in the Olympics which worked out perfectly,” Village manager Mish Kitchin said. “They love the trivia nights and any type of card afternoons or games we put on, there is no lack of competitive spirit amongst the residents.” Some of the events on offer for resident competitors range from table tennis, quoits, a walking race, trivia and gymnastic ribbons – and of course, to top it all off there will be a closing ceremony social function to celebrity the festivities. Lifestyle and social co-ordinator Sharon Keeley organises a great social calendar every week to keep those interested as active as can be, and more and more residents are realising that age really is only a number “We went whale watching last week and it was like being on a boat with a group of kids, everyone was so excited,” she said. “We know most of the residents will be watching the Olympics every night so what better fun than giving them the chance to also compete for gold – and the fun of course!”

Healthy and Happy retirement The answer that most thinking people will give to the question "What do you want to achieve in retirement?" would probably be "To be healthy and happy". Today I’d like to expand a little on what this answer involves. First, to be healthy for most over 60s largely depends on three things – good genes, good lifestyle and good luck. There’s not much we can do about our genes and it’s probably too late to sue our parents if they have given us a poor set to work with. There’s also not much we can do about good luck. Some fit and healthy
people have car accidents that leave them seriously disabled. Others have good luck and avoid injuries and illnesses. Lifestyle is the one area where we are in charge and our choices will probably have a significant effect on our long term health. A healthy lifestyle involves a combination of a well-balanced diet, regular exercise, avoiding or managing anxiety and stress, plenty of sleep and a positive attitude. If you can tick all of these boxes, you’re probably doing a good job of looking after both your mind and body. If you can’t tick many of these boxes, it’s never too late to start living a healthier lifestyle. Achieving happiness is probably most peoples’ number one objective, yet we often don’t understand what happiness is and regularly act in a way that makes it difficult to achieve.
Unfortunately a simple definition of happiness is not that easy to agree on. Sidestepping the tricky task of finding the ideal definition of lasting happiness, a more practical approach is taken by Prof. Tim Sharp, the founder of The Happiness Institute. He suggests that by following the following six strategies CLARITY of life goals, direction and purpose HEALTHY LIFESTYLE I’ve covered that earlier. OPTIMISM – a positive attitude about yourself, your future and the world. GOOD RELATIONSHIPS , especially with those close to you. STRENGTHS – go with your strengths rather than worrying about your weaknesses. ENJOY THE MOMENT – live in the present, have fun, appreciate what you’ve got. More information: www.mylifechange.com.au

New treatments now available
GOOD MEDICINE Dr MICHAEL GILLMAN PERHAPS one of the most embarrassing is faecal incontinence. Faecal incontinence is leakage from the bowel resulting from poor bowel control. Faecal incontinence is caused by poor bowel control and this can result from a number of factors such as long-term straining, surgery or radiation therapy to the pelvic area, diabetes,
nerve disorders such as Multiple Sclerosis or Parkinson’s and even some medications. It is important to note that this condition can be treated and in some cases cured. A full continence assessment is initially carried out. and a bowel program can be devised. If following these measures, the problem persists, then more specialised testing can be carried out looking at anal tone, stool passage and radiological investigations to determine if any medical or surgical conditions can be
corrected. A new treatment known as sacral nerve neuromodulation has become available in some Australian sites. This has revolutionised the management of this condition allowing many people to enjoy a normal lifestyle. A simple procedure involving changing or altering the nerve impulses from the sacral nerves to the pelvic organs, allows control of the bowel to be regained. This same procedure can be used for some urinary incontinence problems as well. www.drmichaelgillman.

captured the heroism and horror for Australian newspaper readers in ways the meticulous yet dry prose of Bean never could. ■ RRP $32.99 ■ Allen & Unwin
BEFORE the Fall by Noah Hawley records how fate intervenes in Scott Burrough’s life in two ways, the first when Maggie Bateman offers the struggling artist a seat on her husband’s private plane from Martha’s Vineyard to New York. Burroughs is relieved. It saves him time on the ferry. However just minutes after take-off, the plane plunges into the ocean with its eight passengers and three crew. But fate again plays its hand and Scott survives the crash, dragging the Bateman’s small son to safety and becoming a national hero in the process. David Bateman was CEO of a controversial news channel so the crash and Scott’s heroics attract significant attention, and later, suspicion particularly when it’s discovered the artist’s latest pieces of work depict disaster scenarios. AUTHOR Barbara Hannay shows how for three generations of Australian women, becoming a grazier's wife has meant very different things. For Stella in 1946, it was a compromise in the aftermath of a terrible war. For Jackie in the 1970s, it was a Cinderella fairytale with an outback prince. While for Alice in 2015, it is the promise of a bright new future. Decades earlier, Stella was desperate to right a huge injustice, but now a long-held family secret threatens to tear the Drummond family of Ruthven Downs apart. On the eve of a special birthday reunion, with half the district invited, the past and the present collide, passions are unleashed and the shocking truth comes spilling out. From glamorous pre-war Singapore to a vast cattle property in Queensland's far north, this sweeping, emotional saga tests their beliefs and hopes. of RRP: $32.99 Penguin

Eat your way through Nice

IF YOU want to know what the French eat at home, head to a market, especially Nice’s famed Flower Market in the Cours Saleya, just a few blocks back from the Promenade des Anglais on the shoreline. Despite its floral name, this market is bursting with local food and produce and is ranked by France’s National Council for the Culinary Arts as being one of the country’s special markets. The marketplace flows up the middle of the street with two avenues of colourful stalls.
Once you’ve had your fill, wander through the tight streets of old town Nice, particularly on the eastern edge.

The market is held Tuesday to Sunday morning, closed Sunday afternoon and Monday, from 6 am to 5.30pm. It sounds like a lot of yoga, 6.30–9am then 4.30–6pm, but the time flies. Over seven days Jessie turns a bunch of yogis – some with virtually no previous practice,
others accomplished – into a group who not only know “savasana” from “tadasana”, but who also know and care about each other and the community. Jessie includes all elements of yoga, not just the poses, but also the meditation and “pranayama” or breathing practices, and they combine to give a sense of calm and connectedness, as well as physical freedom. Got a dodgy knee, bad neck, sore lower back – doesn’t matter. Jessie and Haydie will help you work with it, and make sure you don’t hurt yourself. And if, like me, you’re not up to a handstand or a perfect bridge, that’s okay, she’ll still have you doing the

FANGING along on the back of a motorbike – one hand gripping the back of the bike, fingernails of the other biting into the shoulder of the young Indonesian man at the handlebars – might seem an unusual activity for a yoga retreat, but it sure was fun. I focused on the pale beam of light illuminating the track between rice paddies – potholed and wet from the storm still rumbling and flashing in the distance. Eventually I relaxed, laughed, possibly even woo hoo’d, as we bounced along towards the lights of Ubud where the convoy halted and we disembarked, pumped, and waited for the remainder of the group who had walked back from the restaurant. This was my fourth Radiance yoga retreat. Jessie Chapman holds retreats in Byron Bay, Uki (near Mount Warning),
Bali, Spain, Italy and France. And has plans for one in New Zealand. At the Byron and Uki retreats the emphasis is on yoga, and cleansing the system – no meat, wheat, dairy, coffee, alcohol… Bali is about yoga and pampering, and for me became an exercise in indulgence that added a kilo, while still rendering me very bendy and relaxed. Our Bali retreat days began at 6am with a knock at the door and delivery of a Thermos of hot water so we could make a pre-yoga cuppa. We started slow – stretching over bolsters, blankets and blocks – opening up, readying ourselves for the poses. Jessie has the ability to read a class, to feel the energy, and matches the overall flow to the day and to the individual. The focus is personal, and caring. Bad day – assistant Haydie will drape you over a bolster,

preparatory positions, and help you push boundaries you have never dared try before. After yoga it’s a big healthy breakfast, well, mostly healthy. I took a liking to the local palm sugar syrup and poured it over pancakes, French toast… The Bali retreat is a yoga, wellness and pampering retreat, and there was no shortage of pampering included. We visited ultra-luxurious five-star spas and indulged in massages, scrubs and even a flower bath. These trips also included a-la-carte lunches, and just plain lounging around the plunge pools, swimming pools, jacuzzis… Afternoon yoga was restorative. Gently opening chests, lower backs, upper backs, shoulders, assisted by blankets, bolsters and blocks, and topped off with eye pads. During the evening there was often yoga nidra – to put us in the mood for relaxing sleep. The author paid for all her costs.*

Caves under Krakow More to this Polish city than meets the eye Phil Hawkes
KRAKOW, Poland. One of Europe’s most beautiful cities, listed as a World Heritage site. With impressive monuments, churches and fine architecture untouched by war, it should be on every traveller’s bucket list. There’s more to Krakow than meets the eye, however. Just outside the city, deep below ground level is Wieliczka, the site of a 900-year-old salt mine which is, today, open to visitors, in fact more than 1½ million a year. Here are some interesting facts about the Wieliczka Salt Mine: ■ Settlement of the area began in the Neolithic period 5000 years ago, when salt was extracted from brine. ■ In the 13th century, rock salt was discovered and the first shaft constructed. ■ In the Middle Ages salt was a valuable trading commodity (grey gold) used especially for food preservation. Krakow’s wealth and
strategic importance gained. ■ In the last nine centuries, 7.5 million cubic metres of salt have been extracted. ■ The mine today has nine floors from 64 metres to 327 metres underground. ■ Tours reach a depth of 130 metres to the 3rd level, only 3% of the workings. ■ Awarded World Heritage status in 1978, now nearly two million visitors a year. ■ There’s a full-size chapel underground and regular mass is held.
■ The Salt Mine Health Resort offers medical services and a wellness program. Back on the surface, there are so many things to do in a short stay in Krakow that choices are difficult. Schindler’s Factory will bring back memories of the famous movie and is well worth a visit. From daytime touring to nocturnal activities, from shopping to musical events, Krakow is possibly the finest example of a medieval and Baroque city in Europe, whether above or below the ground.

Award winning show a Musical Spectacular
AUSTRALIAN Global Entertainment presents An Afternoon At The Proms, the Ace Award-winning best production show in Australia. Australia’s most acclaimed international violinist Ian Cooper is joined by opera stars, prima ballerinas, Australia’s current champion pipe band, world famous piano maestro and the Blue Danube Orchestra to evoke the sheer exuberance of An Afternoon At The Proms – A Musical Spectacular. Uplifting and moving, this spectacular brings history’s most loved music to life from the masterpieces of the Viennese court, to the works of Brahms, Verdi, Puccini, Bizet and Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. Along with haunting renditions of Irish favourites, a touch of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and the romance of the Hungarian Gypsy Orchestras, this musical and visual spectacular is set to raise the roof. Making Money Beware of property investment scams
AS HUMANS we seem to instinctively want to find an easy way to make money quickly. Perhaps this explains why property spruikers continue to drum up business. But consumer regulators around Australia are warning about so-called property investment promoters who claim to be ‘wealth creators’ but who are really just in it for themselves. Over 30 years in the money business, I’ve come across more than a few dodgy property investment schemes, and they are often marketed through free property
prepared for some high pressure sales tactics designed to convince you to invest in a property – often as selected by the spruiker. You may be bombarded by claims of high capital growth backed up by inferences that the investment scheme is government approved. More worrying, you could find yourself being encouraged to use your home as security to borrow significant sums of money to invest. I won’t argue that a sensibly priced, well located property can be an excellent long term investment. But our consumer watchdog, the ACCC, is advising against attending these property investment seminars. Many ordinary Australians have suffered

financial loss after relying on the unsubstantiated claims of a property spruiker. And when you think about, if an investment scheme works so well, why don’t the spruikers use it to get rich themselves? The answer is painfully obvious. The schemes don’t work. If the spruiker also supplies mortgage broking, conveyancing and/or tax advice the alarm bells should definitely start ringing. For more information on property spruikers, visit the MoneySmart website. AS A BRITISH colony, Australia was heavily reliant on Britain for investment capital and export revenue. Prior to Federation in 1901, Britain bought virtually all of our exports (mainly wool and gold), making Australia one of the richest countries in the world per capita. Britain remained our largest export partner until 1940, when it fell to second behind the United States. After the war our export mix changed dramatically, playing a vital role in the reconstruction and re-emergence of Europe and Japan. Today, Britain accounts for just 1% of Australia’s export market. The surprise Exit vote took the global markets by surprise and ‘risk assets’ like shares, high-yield bonds and commodities (with the exception of gold) were
gripped in a wave of panic selling. Markets have since calmed, leaving investors to digest what it all means. The implications for Britain in the long term may well be benign or even positive. An exit would remove a seemingly unnecessary layer of bureaucracy that interferes with every aspect of daily life. A renewed sense of independence and self-determination may well boost spending. With a new playing field in Britain and Europe it could be worth a review of your investment strategy. seminars with invitations sent via mail, email or promoted on social media. The details may differ, however a common thread is often the grandiose claims of the people running the seminar. As the government’s MoneySmart website notes, one property investment seminar featured “Four of Australia’s greatest financial superstars”. Yet when our investment watchdog ASIC checked them out, none of the presenters had an Australian Financial Services (AFS) licence. In fact, three of the four speakers were found to live and work in the USA. Who knows what their credentials were? If you do attend one of these seminars, be
