May 15 to Sunday, May 22. “Team Tortoise riders have become popular on their weekly rides,” Lounge Founder Ian McDougall said. “Adorned in bright yellow T shirts for safety they attract all sorts of cheek and
whistles from people, especially women, along the way. Other Bloke’s Lounge cyclists - The Hares - are more serious about their speedy outings. “Just because we‘re older blokes doesn’t mean we sit on our bums
all day watching tellie. At our age joints and muscles can start to deteriorate so it’s important to keep as active as our mobility allows and maintain strength.” For Team Tortoise, the social aspect is just as important. And that’s just why the Bloke’s Lounge was established: so men aged 50+ could meet new people and make new mates. Ian said social isolation is a growing and worrying issue with the Gold Coast’s ever-increasing older population and geographic spread. For more information: blokeslounge.org

Ita: Saying it how it is Better health and employment conditions for older age group ITA Buttrose feels privileged to have reached her current age. “If you are lucky, you get to be old,” the media doyenne said. “My brother was dead at 62, he would have loved to get old.” Ita, now 74, is widely acknowledged for her groundbreaking media career. The respected businesswoman has now turned her attentions to medical education and health care. In 1988, she received an Order of Australia for service in the health care areas, in particular HIV/AIDS education. In 2013 she was named Australian Senior of the Year for work in dementia. The award provided her a platform to talk about age discrimination. The national president of Alzheimer’s Australia, Ita said her ambition is to make the nation an Alzheimer friendly country and to bust ageing myths
and ensure that mature-aged people are treated fairly in the workplace. But she believes change must come from the top. “It’s all about leadership, we need enlightened leaders, management, trailblazers to show the way,” she said. “Look at Bob Hawke, John Howard, we need more people like them to speak up.” Ita said she sees examples of ageism every day and remembers clearly the first time she was exposed to it. “When I had ITA magazine we would talk to potential advertisers and say our magazine was geared to women over 40 and 50,” she said. “At the mention of that age, their eyes would glaze over. “It wasn’t until the babyboomers reached 50 that people realised this age group was fit, active and contributing.”
FORWARD THINKING: Australian media personality Ita Buttrose is determined to counter age discrimination and believes change must come from the top. PHOTO:CONTRIBUTED
Ita said age discrimination remains an issue in the workplace and advised employers to take off their blinkers. “In Sydney, I see signs asking for waiters,
baristas, people in the service industry,” she said. “If there’s a shortfall in the service industry, why not take on older people? “It’s myth that older
people take more sick leave or have less commitment or can’t adapt. Older people can learn and adapt as well as anyone.” Ita said she intends to
keep fighting for change and she invites you to join the battle. “Kick down that door,” she said. “And say that you demand respect, work and employment.”

Des Lacey is still fighting crime
The importance of understanding how Crime Stoppers works By Yvonne Gardiner
FORMER Gold Coast police chief superintendent Des Lacy stepped out of the top crime-fighting job last year, but he’s still involved with keeping his region safe. Des has moved into a voluntary role as chairman of a group he’d helped set up – Crime Stoppers Gold Coast North. Population growth spurred the group’s creation. “I said, the north is growing so fast and we need representation,” Des said. “I’ve lived in this area since 1985 – that’s why I’m so passionate about it. “Crime Stoppers is key to getting information for the police. “My job (as chief supt) was to make sure Crime Stoppers’ calls were actioned. “When the community is satisfied with police,

they’re more likely to trust them.” Every cent of the money raised by Crime Stoppers Gold Coast North goes towards solving crimes, Des says. “We seek funding and look for any opportunity to raise money. “The most important
thing is educating the public about how Crime Stoppers works. “You can give information over the web. “You get a number and you can ring back and ask what’s happened with any information. “We’ve had murder cases resolved by way of
Crime Stoppers’ information.” In 2014 the Gold Coast’s northern suburbs of Upper Coomera, Pimpama and Ormeau, along with Southport, topped the country for fastest-growing regional suburbs. The fledgling Crime Stoppers Gold Coast North division covers Nerang to Coomera, and joins the Central Gold Coast and the Coolangatta Tweed branches. Des’s new paid job takes in the entire Gold Coast, as manager of security for the upcoming 2018 Commonwealth Games’ competition venues. ■ To report information on a crime, you can fill out an online form or call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. If the situation is urgent and requires police attendance, call 000.

Help needed to knock on doors
U3A North Gold Coast celebrations By Yvonne Gardiner
U3A North Gold Coast has a couple of landmark celebrations in May. The U3A choir is busy rehearsing for the first get-together, a Biggest Morning Tea on Tuesday, May 24, at Paradise Point Large Community Hall. Doors open at 8.30am for those wanting to socialise and raise dollars for the Cancer Council. The second celebration is the group’s 25th birthday on May 27. U3A North Gold Coast’ initial membership of 19 has increased to more than 500 members. All U3A branches are voluntary, self-help organisations which tap the great reservoir of knowledge, skills and experience to be found among over-50s. No qualifications are required to enter, neither are any qualifications awarded. U3A North Gold Coast president John Hudson is a relative newcomer but

well on the path to lifelong learning. “I’ve been in U3A 12 months,” he said. “I came up from Sydney 18 months ago and joined in April 2015. “The prime class I’m involved with is Australian history, from 1788 up to
Federation in 1901. “We’re currently in our second year and we’re up to 1825.” John said his U3A group was proud to offer a good teaching service for seniors in the use of Apple products. “The base of our
membership is very solid and the majority have been participating for a long time.” U3A North Gold Coast is based at the Labrador Community Hub, 57 Billington St, Labrador. If you have expertise in
an interesting subject that you would like to present to others, contact curriculum manager Maureen Cooper on 0405 942 051, or training co-ordinator Bonita Gordon on 0419 195 314.
THE Salvation Army has 1400 volunteers but needs another 700 to collect on the Gold Coast for the 2016 Red Shield Appeal Door Knock on May 28 and 29. Gold Coast fundraising and public relations manager Rowan Johnstone said volunteers could have a few fun hours with family or friends doing the door knock through local streets, or they could choose a community collection point in a local shopping centre. "Woolworths supermarkets, Bunnings’ stores, shopping centres and the Gold Coast Airport are supporting this year’s appeal," he said. "The Salvation Army helped 2000 people through the homeless and accommodation support services over the last six months, including the Gold Coast Accommodation Service. CURLY Pickering is one lucky dog. He was rescued from the RSPCA refuge by keen animal-lover Errol Pickering. “Curly had been abandoned. They found him on the streets, covered in lice,” his owner said. “Now he’s tubby and slightly naughty. “He’s half a pug and half a beagle, so we call him a ‘puggle’.” After that rough start to life, Curly now enjoys a fine home at Robina and a chance to meet all his doggy friends at the annual Million Paws Walk. Errol, 78, has been involved with the walk for 20 years. “For a while, I used to organise the walk. All those years, it’s only rained once,” Errol said. “Last year we had more than 1000 dogs.” Nearly 2000 RSPCA

Car service schedules ‘dictatorial’?
FAMILY: A sad but true story.
fair, amount I was a fool to trust him, but a mother's love is strong Through your eyes, your precious child would never treat you wrong Our savings have diminished, we are in a private hell We've been cheated out of money, and, I've lost a son as well.
❝
Motor Trades Association of Queensland GM Kellie Dewar says dealers are not to blame... price of $300. “We told the dealer we wouldn’t be doing that mileage as we never have done. We were told it was a condition of the warranty. “The first service was in December 2015 – mileage 7611. “This included a return trip to Melbourne of 4200kms, leaving 3400kms normal running in six months. “Since December until the present time (March 2016), we have only done 1600kms in
three months. “Is there anything that can be done to stop this dictatorial attitude of how we can use our cars?” Motor Trades Association of Queensland (MTAQ) general manager Kellie Dewar says dealers are not to blame for setting service stipulations. “The manufacturer sets the service schedule for cars they manufacture - new car dealers do not set the service schedule,” she said.
“The service schedule is linked to requirements for manufacturers’ warranty. “Vehicle owners should check their service schedule requirements in the service handbooks that are provided with the purchase of new vehicles and kept as a service record. “Service intervals are time and kilometre-specific.” What do you think? Should car manufacturers consider drivers who travel short distances when setting their service schedules?

BURLEIGH Waters car owner Tom Rendall asks why seniors travelling short distances need six-monthly services on their vehicles. In his opinion, unnecessary servicing is a waste of materials such as oil, in addition to the $50 service charge a month that comes out of his pension. “In June 2015, my wife and I decided we could do without two cars, to cut costs, so we traded them in on one new car,” Mr Rendall said in a letter. “After we had bought the car, we were told that servicing would be every six months, or 12,500kms, whichever was sooner, at a fixed

Pensioners go crazy for new hearing aid. AT LAST. The hearing aid that thousands have wanted is now available. Celebrate 100 is a totally invisible hearing aid when worn. It offers pensioners the opportunity to defy hearing loss by compensating for your individual hearing loss, in many situations. Nobody can see it because it fits snugly and comfortably in your ear canal and uses the ear’s natural acoustics for natural sound quality. Everything works automatically. There are no controls to worry about
so there’s no need to keep fiddling about and adjusting settings. You can start enjoying life again as you concentrate on hearing, rather than thinking about your hearing aid. Celebrate 100 continuously analyses incoming sounds and adapts to each individual situation so you always get the best hearing possible. Even in background noise. When speech and conversation sounds are detected, the sound is automatically increased at different frequencies so you hear and understand it clearly, not just loudly.
You get all the benefits you want in a digital hearing aid without the obvious sign that you are using one, as it’s completely invisible in most ears. For more information about Celebrate 100 and Government subsidies for pensioners:

Livia speaks up for women
All Things Legal? APPOINTED AS AN EXECUTOR? BETTER GET A LAWYER... THE BIGGEST MISTAKES EXECUTORS MAKE If you are named as the Executor of an Estate, you might feel honoured by the appointment and see it as a sign of the esteem in which you are held by a family member or friend. However, the role can be extremely challenging and carries significant and, potentially, a very costly personal legal liability. Being the Executor of an Estate sounds a lot easier than it really is. The Executor is responsible for numerous duties which they are required to carry out in a timely and proper manner. It involves more than just organising the deceased’s funeral and ascertaining the identity of the beneficiaries. An Executor has to take steps to ascertain the assets and liabilities of the Estate, determine whether an application for a grant of probate is required, pay Estate debts and then distribute the balance of the Estate in accordance with the terms of the Will. While that sounds simple enough, the procedure is full of potential pitfalls. Asset-holding structures are becoming more complex in our modern financial world - companies, family and unit trusts, self managed superannuation funds and other corporate entities make the administration of Estates more complex. Obtaining proper legal, accounting and financial advice from the outset is essential if an Executor wants to minimise his/her potential liability.
Livia York at the launch of her first book. PHOTO:
Unless a specific gift or the right to charge a commission is contained in the Will and there is consent from the beneficiaries, an Executor must apply to the Court for an order that commission be paid. This is not always granted and the amount can be quite modest, depending on the size of the estate and what actual work is carried out by the executor. If commission is granted it is usually treated as income received in that tax year and must be disclosed in the executor’s tax return.
GOLD Coast author Livia York bares her soul to the reader in her first book, shedding light on her own experience of domestic violence as a young mother. The 73-year-old was bitten by the writing bug late in life, and worked for two years on this book. “Rise” is an achingly true story about a girl who rose from the ashes, much like the fabled phoenix bird. She tells of abuse and the rape she suffered as a teenager, which left her pregnant just days before moving from Italy to Australia. As a baby in 1943, Livia survived one of the biggest bombardments in Rome. The apartment she shared with her mother was sliced in two. When her mother arrived at the scene, she was amazed to see that Livia had survived unscathed, wrapped in blankets in the basement. “It was like the phoenix rising from the ashes. The phoenix was my mother and the phoenix was me,” Livia said. In writing her story, she hopes to inspire anyone trapped in similar circumstances to learn from her experiences, to take courage and free themselves from domestic violence before it’s too late. “I was abused when I
Most of us accept the role as Executor without fully understanding the tasks that we must perform. The following is not an exhaustive list but outlines some of the duties as Executor that you might have to perform throughout the administration of the Estate: Taking steps to ensure the Will is the deceased person’s final Will; Making sure the last will is a valid testamentary document: if the Will-maker makes his or her own Will without legal assistance or advice, there can be problems such as failure to comply with signing and witnessing requirements or the stapling or clipping of the Will to other documents so you will need to seek legal advice regarding the Will itself and its validity;
•
Steps may also need to be taken including obtaining a Barrister’s advice or an application to the Court as to the interpretation of the terms of the Will, particularly where the terms of the will are uncertain or poorly drafted;
•
You may need to identify a person named in the Will if the deceased has used a “nickname” rather than his/her correct name;
•
There may be two family members with the same name and the Will is not clear which person is the intended beneficiary;
•
You may need to determine the nature and intent of a gift such as whether it is an absolute gift or it is a life interest only;
•
You will need to ascertain all the assets and liabilities of the Estate;
•
Determine whether Estate assets are or ought to be insured and maintain them;
•
If the deceased operated a business, ascertain what steps need to be taken to ensure it continues to operate;
•
If the deceased was a shareholder or office-holder in a family company, ascertain what happens to the share or vacated office upon their death;
•
Ascertain whether any superannuation the deceased had forms part of his/her Estate;
•
Notify all the beneficiaries in the Will and keep them informed;
•
Determining if you need to apply for Probate of the Will (or another type of grant);
•
Lodging Tax returns for the deceased and or the Estate;
•
Obtaining advice regarding any tax liabilities (other than payment of income tax) of the Estate e.g. Capital Gains Tax
•
Ensure all the debts of the Estate are paid
•
Distributing the Estate in accordance with the terms of the Will;
•
If minors, or persons with a disability, are beneficiaries and will not be entitled to receive their share until they reach a certain age (or in the case of beneficiaries with disabilities, will only have a life interest) obtain financial advice regarding investing the beneficiary’s share;
•
Searching for lost relatives or their children if they have predeceased the testator;
•
Defend any proceedings brought against the Estate such as: ♦ Family Provision Claims ♦ Unpaid creditors ♦ Civil actions brought against the deceased that continue after his/her death
So, acting as an Executor is a big job and one that comes with a lot of responsibility. Perhaps not surprisingly then, there is a lot of room for error and mistakes are sometimes made. Here are what we consider to be some of the biggest mistakes made by executors: Keeping Poor Records This is possibly the biggest mistake that we see Executors making. It is absolutely essential for an executor to keep detailed records of everything that they do on behalf of the estate from paying the deceased’s bills to cancelling electricity to making notes about a conversation with a beneficiary. We also advise our clients who are acting as Executors to keep a journal of everything they do including the date, amount of time spent, who they met with, what was done/ discussed, travel records, disbursements, etc. This will be very helpful if a beneficiary objects to you being reimbursed for your own expenses as an Executor that you have paid personally or questions any of your actions as Executor. Using Estate funds for your own purposes This is a no-no. An Executor should not mix their own funds with estate assets and never use estate funds for personal liabilities. This is a breach of an executor’s fiduciary duty. Procrastinating Executors and beneficiaries are often surprised to find out just how long it can take to administer an estate. Generally speaking, it can take a year to a year and a half to administer even a simple estate … longer if the estate is complex or if there are problems. And no matter how big or complex the estate, there is lots to be done. And some of the steps take a fair bit of time. Executors must carry out their duties with care and attention and in a timely manner. Procrastinating can be a breach of an Executor’s fiduciary duty. They don’t follow the will Executors often choose to “rewrite” parts of the will they don’t think are fair. For example, if three children are beneficiaries and one is getting more than the other two, an executor might decide that it is not fair. Or they will give personal belongings to grandchildren even if they were not named in the will. Not surprisingly, Executors will be challenged by other beneficiaries for not following the will. They don’t keep beneficiaries updated There are many family fights and court proceedings that could have been prevented if the Executors had just said what they’re doing. Executors should create an email distribution list of beneficiaries and update them regularly. hey don’t get valuations Executors have to make sure that if they are selling a property or asset, they get qualified appraisals and opinions as to the value. Any time an Executor has to exercise discretion, it’s a possible point of challenge. They don’t keep arms-length relationships If Executors sell property or assets from the estate to themselves, or to someone who is related to them, that could create conflict with the beneficiaries.

encourage me to write about it,” she said. “She wanted me to free myself of the shame and guilt I have been carrying since I was 15 years old. She is my inspiration and guiding angel. “I’ve closed the story with the events of the day when I freed myself of domestic violence; August 1969 when I was 27 years old, with my son, 11, and my daughter, eight years old, by my side. “The physical abuse was so bad that, one night, I found myself with a pair of scissors in my hand. I told him: ‘Don’t you dare come near me’. “It was not long after that I finally left.” RISE: The Abused Child of the Phoenix – A True Story is available at www.amazon.com.au or visit Livia’s Facebook page.

was 15, five days before I was to leave for Australia,” Livia said. “I didn’t tell anyone. When I arrived in Australia, much to my shock, I was told that I was pregnant. “From the age of 15, for 12 years, I was caught in an abusive, violent relationship. “If we all talk about domestic violence, we will make a difference and we will educate the next generation to respect and love one another.” Livia said she was urged to write her story by her beloved daughter Daniela, who was 51 years old when she passed away from cancer in 2012. “As a child, with her brother, she had often witnessed the violent treatment I was subjected to. As an adult, she would

Not seeking Professional Help Perhaps the biggest mistake an Executor can make is failing to recognise their own shortcomings and calling in outside help when necessary. It is important to know your limits - that means that if there is something you are not sure about, you check out a legal issue with a lawyer specialised in the area of Wills and Estate administration so you are not personally liable or sued or a financial issue with an accountant so you don’t end up paying more tax than you should, or not enough.

Robina tree set to shine
ROBINA Town Centre celebrates its 20th anniversary with two months of activity including an Australian-first art installation. Part of the celebration is Aurora, a nine-metre-tall interactive art installation by American artist Charles Gadeken. Aurora is a one-of-a-kind towering nine-metre willow tree, with hand-beaten copper leaves that chime in the wind. Positioned on the Promenade, Aurora comes to life at night in a spectrum of colours. This magnificent piece of art allows you to control the lighting of its branches from your phone or from the iPad located near the tree. The ever-changing lighting makes Aurora a true work of art. The Aurora Tree will be located on the Promenade from 28 April – October 2016. About Aurora: Aurora was created for
the Burning Man Festival (Nevada) in 2014. After the festival, the children of Californian City, Palo Alto were so inspired by Aurora that they raised the money to bring Aurora to their city. This will be the first time Aurora has come to Australia. “With this piece, I am creating an environment of mythical beauty that instils a sense of awe, wonder and joy to those who experience it. It acts as a unique and unexpected element placed in the world that empowers and transforms the viewer at the moment of participation,” explained artist Charles Gadeken. Light rail on track THE Queensland Government and GoldLinQ have formally entered into a new partnership to deliver the Gold Coast light rail extension in time for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Minister for Transport
and the Commonwealth Games, Stirling Hinchliffe, said the contract signing between GoldLinQ and their construction partner CPB Contractors, Bombardier Transportation and Keolis Downer signalled the start of the design and delivery of the 7.3 kilometre extension. The $420 million project will be delivered with a $270m contribution from the Queensland Government, $95m from the Australian Government and up to $55m from the City of Gold Coast. Holiday house opened PEOPLE with disability can now access a new state-of-the art holiday house on the Gold Coast. THE saying ‘necessity is the mother of invention’ can be taken to mean that the chief motive behind an idea, or service, is a need. Case in point are senior move managers who are delivering a new service for a growing market. An estimated 14% of Queensland’s population is aged 65 years or older. In the next 40 years or so the number of seniors is anticipated to increase by about 24% or 1.8 million people. Such a dramatic change to our demographics means lifestyles, services and family expectations and responsibilities will change. For some, it’s happening already. The rise of the ‘sandwich generation’ (those people, typically aged in their 30s or 40s, working full-time and responsible for raising their own children and caring for their parents) is the driving force behind the growing demand for senior move managers. Why do people use a senior move manager?
HELP WITH MOVING: Senior move managers Leah Steinberg and Clariissa Brandt ready to sort it all out. PHOTO: CONTRIBUTED
When older adults decide to downsize the family home and move to a smaller residence or make a transition to a retirement home it’s common for them to have not moved in 30, 40 or even 50 years. Calling on a senior move manager who has the skills and time to arrange a move is an excellent solution for families with work commitments, who are geographically dispersed or simply can’t be there
to help with the moving process. What does a senior move manager do? By understanding the unique needs of each client, a senior move manager can plan, perform and position a move with absolute care, making a new home feel like home. The assistance that a senior move manager can provide is exhaustive, just some of the tasks they may undertake include:
■ Declutter and downsize ■ Organise waste and donations ■ Find storage and movers ■ Arrange cleaning and maintenance ■ Co-ordinate styling and real estate ■ Help with settling in and unpacking. Contact Care to Move ■ 07 3810 8619 ■ support@careto move.com.au ■ www.caretomove. com.au.

I WAS lamenting to a mate recently about flying economy when I travel. We were having a lively chat about our travel dreams, as you do when you reach a certain age, have finished raising a family and are more free to travel. “I love to get away a couple of times a year,” I said to my mate. “I always travel economy, keeps costs down.” “Ah, yes,” said the mate, “but if you travel economy, your kids certainly won’t. “They’ll be in business class, spending the inheritance you left them because you sat down the back of the plane.” That got me riled. I’d never thought of it that way. Like most seniors I want to leave my offspring a decent amount when I go but hey, why should
they get the benefits of my hard work and travel business class on their inheritance while I spend my twilight years squashed down the back with ageing knees and rising temper? So, it’s up the front for me from now on. Sorry, kids, your inheritance just took a dip. There is something indecently smug about clutching a business class boarding pass as you sweep to the front of the queue and board before the crush as the masses claim their seats. But you must cast guilt aside and take your place in your large – oh so large – business-class seat with its space and calm and privacy and big television screen and ottoman and little cubby holes for bottled water and headset and, what’s this? a shoe locker. Yes, a shoe locker. Oh, the glam of it. *For more information on Cathay Pacific and its business, premium economy and economy class options and the airline’s routes to and from Australia visit cathaypacific.com.au.

We all want to live a longer and more active life. People who have lost a partner, recently retired, living alone or in isolation, or just looking for a social life, are usually looking for some outlet but don’t always know where to find something that suits them. It is important we address these issues and as a community we should be looking at ways of doing this. The Never Alone Friendship Centre offers a great program designed to ensure the varying needs of our guests are met. Friendship and fun are two of the main ingredients of the program. It goes without saying that empathy, compassion and understanding are in-built commodities in the program. Our volunteers regularly get feedback and
testimonials from our guests on how much their lives have changed for the better, since being involved socially and actively at the Centre. For more info call 5562 2993 or dropping in at the Centre any Wednesday between 9am and noon, located at the Masonic Hall, First Ave Burleigh Heads.

Dr Gillman column - needs headshot dincus Heart disease is far too common in Queensland. We all know of or have heard about someone dying from a heart attack and sometimes we wonder how this could have happened? "He or she seemed so fit and well and it seemed to come out of the blue.." So what can we do to try and prevent early onset of heart and blood vessel damage? So here is my checklist for reducing the risk: If you smoke, then quit. There are now numerous programmes available through your local GP and pharmacy and with newer medications which can assist in the quitting process, the excuses for continuing to smoke are very few. Get you blood pressure checked. If it is high when measured, then it may be worthwhile investing in an electronic blood pressure monitor so you can see
what the readings are like in the "real world".Get your blood sugar level tested. . A fasting blood test ordered by your Doctor is the only way to accurately check your levels.Get your blood lipid or fat levels tested and make sure you know what your "good" and "bad" cholesterol levels are. There are no symptoms for high lipid levels and again this needs to be investigated by a blood test from your Doctor.Be physically active and maintain a healthy diet.. Cut down on refined carbohydrates (sugars), saturated fats, salt and alcohol. Try to eat whole foods rather than processed foods. Aim to do 3 – 5 hours of moderate intensity physical activity or 1.5 – 2.5 hours of vigorous intensity physical activity each week and aim to do some muscle strengthening activities on at least 2 days each week. It is recommended to have these health checks from the age of 45 or from the age of 35 if you are from an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background. www.drmichaelgillman. com

Longevity, age and growing stronger
MONDAY, April 25 was Anzac Day and so it seems particularly appropriate that we talk about freedom. How much freedom have these freedom fighters really managed to salvage? When you consider a lot of the damaging consequences of seeing combat can be in the mind, it is no surprise to hear many of those who served are literally locked inside their own traumatic memories. In a report published by the US Department of Veterans Affairs, at least 22 American veterans take their lives every day. It’s no secret that yoga can aid mental well being and recent scientific studies indicate that yogic practices are very effective in the treatment of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is believed that through the practise of all

TARAJI JOURNEY THERESE AHERN
the eight limbs of yoga, as described by the ancient sage Patanjali, it is possible to create new neurological pathways. Can this be true? On a physical level, yoga and freedom are simpler to explain. The great yin yoga pioneer Paul Grilley talked about trajectory of aging. He said all humans follow the same trajectory of aging, some faster than others. Hence the only way to die young is to slow the aging process down. But how? In the words of Ashley Montagu: “The idea is to die young as late as possible”. Grilley said the aging trajectory begins with birth. From the day we are born we become more yin-like. Yin represents stability whereas yang represents mobility. As we age, our bodies get stiffer and stiffer. We can be strong well into our declining years but the real health issues develop out of stagnation. Check more at taraji.com.au/yoga.

Importance of care
A Mature Voice for Change
IRT provide lifelong care for residents ADVERTORIAL
QUEENSLAND’S baby boomers want more than just a roof over their head as they age... You want to be supported to live an active independent life for as long as possible. You also want high quality homes for affordable prices in great locations. Yes your expectations are high, but why shouldn’t they be? You’ve worked hard, probably raised a family, and now you want to enjoy life. Setting yourself up for a comfortable retirement is important, but so is planning for when you’re a little less independent. IRT Group operates two Lifestyle Communities on the Sunshine Coast and has just opened a third, IRT Woodlands in Kawana Forest at Meridan Plains. According to IRT, Sunshine Coast seniors generally wait until their late 60s or early 70s to move into a lifestyle community, meaning you may need

support sooner that you think. “In deciding whether lifestyle community living is right for you, you need to consider how that community can support you as your care needs change,” said IRT’s Queensland general
manager, Lance Taylor. “At IRT Woodlands, residents will be able to arrange for home care services to their villa, but they also have the choice of an on-site 60-suite care centre if they develop high care needs. “This means they won’t
have to leave their IRT Woodlands family.” Mr Taylor says this gives people peace of mind. “People choose to live in communities like IRT Woodlands for the lifestyle,” he said. “It really is like being on holiday all year round, but

knowing you have a home for life is also important, and IRT Woodland’s on-site care centre means we can provide that,” Mr Taylor said. For more information on IRT Woodlands, go to www.irtwoodlands.org.au
MATURE-age Australians (from 18 to the 80s +) now have a new champion in their corner for the coming national election battles, in July or later. The Mature Australia Party, registered recently by the Australian Electoral Commission, has its sights on Senate and House of Representatives seats in at least five of the six Australian States. National president Terry Snell (Qld) said the Party was processing endorsement applications from 15 prospective candidates, and expected more to join the bid in coming days and weeks. “We have definite starters in Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland – and we’re confident of securing spots in each State. “For the first time, maturees will have their own voice in this election campaign...to ensure that they’re given the recognition... and support they deserve. They won’t be ignored any more; we’ll make sure of that.”

Advances in mental health research THE Queensland Government is throwing its support behind critical mental health research, from pinpointing the origins of schizophrenia to preventing psychiatric problems some Parkinson’s disease patients encounter after undergoing a surgical procedure to improve motor function. Minister Leeanne Enoch said $570,000 in grants had been given to four mental health research projects as part of more than $10 million funding for 54 recipients from the Advance Queensland Research Fellowships and PhD Scholarships programs. Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Cameron Dick said the research had the potential to improve outcomes for people with mental illness and their carers. Making your Will CONTINUING on with our eight-part series focusing on things you should know about Wills, we now reach part three of the series. Wills are not only for rich people Many people think that they do not need to make a Will if they don’t own any property or don’t have much money. However, Queensland law requires that all deceased estates must be properly administered, no matter how large or small the estate. Common items that people do not realise form part of their estate include: ■ Sentimental possessions such as jewellery, artwork and photos; and ■ Unpaid wages and leave entitlements. In addition to setting out who receives your assets your Will can also: ■ Designate guardians to take care of any of your children who are under the age of eighteen; ■ Detail arrangements for family pets; ■ Set out arrangements for what you would like to happen with social network profiles such as Facebook, Myspace,
Carolyn Devries, CEO at New Way Lawyers.
LinkedIn and Twitter; ■ Provide details of wishes for your funeral or cremation; and ■ Confirm your wishes regarding organ donation. It is advisable for everyone to have a Will in place, regardless of their financial circumstances. This information is intended as general legal information only for people living in Queensland and is not a substitute for individual legal advice. Serene Living photos from another era
Rare Fred Lang images capture Tweed Coast’s many changes ADVERTORIAL
THE residents at Serene Living already knew their village was one of the best located on the Coast, but a rare photographic exhibition held at their recent Open Day opened their eyes, and visitors’ eyes, to just how much the area had changed over the years. As well as the chance to look through the facilities on offer at Serene, through the eyes of iconic photographer Fred Lang, residents and visitors alike were treated to a trip back in time, with photographs from the 1930’s onwards showing images of the Tweed and surrounds like never seen before. From the early 1930’s until he passed away in 1993, Fred Lang took more than an estimated 6 million photographs,
documenting the changing landscape and coastal development from Byron Bay right through to Southport. He saw the opportunity to promote the Gold Coast as Australia’s premier tourist destination and took it upon himself to

The bowel cancer test is based on the latest technology
GUT FEELING: May is Bowelscan month, so get your test done.
I'd never felt so helpless...

AUSTRALIANS participating in Rotary’s lifesaving bowel cancer awareness initiative will benefit from the inclusion of faecal immunochemical tests (FIT) in all Rotary-branded bowel screening kits this year. The tests are available in participating Australian pharmacies or on line at bowelscanqueensland. org.au from May 1. The program will see
more than 120,000 FITs used as part of the Rotary Bowelscan programs this year across Australia. The FIT is one of the most effective and easiest ways to reduce the risk of bowel cancer. Gastroenterologist, Dr Howard Hope, said the national inclusion of the faecal immunochemical tests was an important next step for the already
successful program. “Bowel cancer is the second most common newly diagnosed cancer in Australia, but it is treatable if diagnosed early,” Dr Hope said. “Rotary encourages people to take that all important test. “The test is based on the latest technology and has a very high sensitivity. “This program provides a great service to Australians.”
Richmond Manyweathers, from Bowelscan, says the program will continue to save lives and alleviate suffering. “This Rotary-inspired program encourages Australians to pick up a bowel cancer test,” Mr Manyweathers said. “Last year, over 4000 people were referred for additional medical follow up after the test, which
shows the impact of this program.” In Queensland, Rotary Clubs and pharmacies from Sunshine Coast to Gold Coast, from Brisbane to Toowoomba and out to Roma are working together as a community service this year. Last year, this region saw one in nine clients referred to their doctor as a direct result of this life-saving program.
FOR two days last June I lay on the floor of my home of 42 years, in horrific pain, unable to pick myself up, unable to call for help, unable to feed myself, unable to make it to the bathroom, unable to determine just how injured I was. Not a single soul knew I was in trouble. I'd never felt so afraid. Never felt so help-ess than I did during those 48 hours. I’d always prided myself on being able to take care of myself but I quickly realised just how vulnerable I was. Lucky for me, my story has a happy ending, I was found and given the care I needed. But the whole episode was traumatising. I didn't know during the 48 hours I was stranded that I was going to be found. Although I tried to keep a positive outlook, I had considered the possibility that I might never get up off that floor. Afterwards I suffered from anxiety and panic attacks and didn't like to be left alone. It placed enormous strain on my family and we decided I should move to a nursing home. This is a just one of the true stories that inspires EMS to find solutions to keep people in their homes safely for longer. With the safeTcare model, our clients are monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. The device is the latest technology and more importantly simple to use. Enquiries contact Paul Joseph, safeTcare team captain and government licensed security advisor (monitoring specialist), by phone on (07) 5634 4047 or email paul.joseph@ emsas.com.au.

Steps to good estate planning available WE HAVE a steady flow of inquiry at our office regarding aged care – it’s technically part of good Estate Planning and is commonly a daunting task for people. A typical scenario would be of an elderly family member who had been managing quite well with their day to day living and an event occurs that renders them in need of long term care. It may be a fall, a stroke, the onset of dementia, or some similar debilitating situation. Changes occurred in the structure of aged care several years ago that has made it more a “user pay” area. The new system on the surface
Proper advice can make this a much easier process
looks difficult to work through but if you follow a process and make inquiry, it certainly isn’t insurmountable. Remember not to get baffled by the acronyms. If this ends up being thrown in your lap, just take a deep breath and follow these five basic steps. Also there is website provided by the Federal government that will give you some tips and the calculations which can all be done for you at the click of a button at www.myaged care.gov.au. The first step is to have an assessment done by an ACAT (Aged Care Assessment Team). Then locate a suitable facility – there is a list
available on the website. It’s best to work out which ones seem to suit and then visit them and get a feel of the amount of care offered to help make your decision.

Change gears - sit down and decide how you want to balance your time
SOME of you work, some of you are retired, some of you are transitioning into retirement. So, how busy is your life? can drain your energy. After one of my retirement life planning seminars, a man who had been retired for five years, said that some of the things he thought were so important before he retired, hadn’t been that important at all in the big picture and had only wasted precious time that he could have spent on more meaningful and enjoyable activities in his life. It is not selfish to say “No” sometimes. Otherwise people take you for granted and your own health can suffer. Set boundaries as a grandparent for minding the kids.
List 3 – Write down the things you would love to have more time to do that are not work related. I have found through the many seminars I have presented at over the years, that the people who have developed a work–life balance, getting involved in activities outside of work and meeting new people, transition into retirement more easily. It’s a good idea to review your list every so often and make any adjustments to keep on track. Get back in the driver’s seat, change gears and enjoy the journey of life!

WORKING Australians have almost one-tenth of their salary added to their super each year through employer contributions. Yet many people aren’t embracing the benefits of super to grow a retirement nest egg. A recent study by MLC found two out of five Australians don’t think they will be able to fund their own retirement, and expect to rely on Government support in their senior years. One in five people are pinning their hopes on a big inheritance to ensure their financial security. At present, 53% of Australia’s retirees rely on the Government as a source of income, and given our ageing population it’s hard to see how this level of support can be sustained. This is why we are continually being urged to build a pot of retirement savings. Super is lightly taxed when we’re in the workforce, and you can withdraw your super tax-free from age 60. That makes super far more tax-friendly than investments held outside super. As we head towards the end of the financial year, it’s worth looking at ways to grow your nest egg. If you’re a PAYG worker, consider speaking with the boss about adding to your super through salary sacrifice. River cruising luxury
Wall-to-wall comfort as a kaleidoscope of Europe’s charms glides past your panoramic window Ann Rickard
IF EVER there was a holiday designed specifically for us mature folks, it would have to be river cruising. There are many reasons for this, more about them in a minute, but the top one would surely be: no children on board. We love children, most of us seniors are doting grandparents, but we don’t love the little tykes when they are running amok around the decks and lounges on a ship. River cruising is not designed for children, there are no facilities for them, they’d be bored. River cruising suits those of us who enjoy
the ease of being moved smoothly from one place to another, those who love to unpack just the once, who adore being pampered and wined and dined to the brim. Those who love a no-bingo-orextravagant-theatre policy, those who are more the gather-around-the-piano type. Avalon Waterways’ newest river ship, Imagery II, has just been launched on the Rhine, formally christened by “godmother”, New Zealand personality, Judy Bailey. It now awaits your pleasure. You are going to love this spanking new ship with its Suite Ship policy: two entire decks of roomy suites with marble
bathrooms complete with L’Occitane products, and more space than any other ships cruising Europe’s great rivers. What you are going to love beyond all the many loveable details on board Imagery II, is the wall-to-wall windows in your suite, a whole wall that slides back to transform your suite into one large alfresco balcony and – this is luxury without measure – the bed faces the window. Think about that. You wake up each morning in a comfortable wide bed beneath a floaty white doona to lazily watch a kaleidoscope of Europe’s charms glide past your panoramic window.

AND HELP SAVE ENDANGERED SPECIES
REGISTER TODAY WILDONESIEWEEK.COM
If you (or better still, your mate) has padded quietly to the elegant lounge at the aft of the ship, where a gleaming coffee machine will dispense any coffee style of your choice, and he brings it back along with a big home-baked cookie to enjoy in bed, well, you are going to be in holiday heaven aren’t you? And your exciting day hasn’t even started yet. The unprecedented growth in river cruising has astonished everyone in the travel industry, even Avalon Waterways’ management who are frantically building more ships to keep up with demand. Avalon Waterways does not let its ships age.
When they are only just past juvenile stage, they are sold or sent off to ship graveyard. Hence, all Avalon’s long sleek river ships are modern and fresh. None more so than Imagery II. The decor is contemporary and restful with tasteful and luxurious object d’art and contemporary art works at every turn. The lounges and dining room are fitted with up-to-the-minute furniture with exquisite fabrics. On the expansive top open-air deck, the sun lounges beckon, and a small spa sits beside a giant deck chess set. The chef even grows his own herbs in pots up on the deck.
You will never be short of something exciting to do on Imagery II as her itinerary stops at some of Europe’s most beautiful cities, towns and villages. And the ship docks right in the heart of things. You have only to walk off to have Avalon’s private buses with local guides waiting a few steps away to whisk you into the heart of Europe’s excitement, history and culture. Comfort is what most of us prioritise for our travels as we age. Followed by ease of getting from A to B. Imagery II provides the lot. The writer was a guest on board Imagery II.

Beware of dinosaurs Come on a journey through Eromanga’s new museum Phil Hawkes
DINOSAURS have been around in Queensland for a long time. Of course I speak of fossils, not real life (unless speaking of some of my contemporaries) and the area around Winton has become quite famous, worldwide, for its splendid Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum of Natural History. Now there’s a new kid on the block in the form of Cooper, identified as a Titanosaur discovered in 2004 on a property near Eromanga further south. This is the largest dinosaur fossil find so far in Australia, with a humerus 1.5 metres in length and weighing over 100kg, a new species in the world. Since then, George, Zac and Sid have joined Eromanga’s growing dino family. Other large creatures have also been found near Eulo and identified as Megasaurs. Understandably, palaeontologists are very
excited by these new discoveries and the Outback Gondwana Foundation together with the Queensland Museum has just opened a brand new Natural History Museum in Eromanga (ENHM) to display these amazing fossils and run educational programs for tourists, school groups and scientists. It’s a well-curated exhibition managed by Robyn Mackenzie, owner of the property where Cooper was found by her 14-year-old son Sandy. He thought it looked “different” to the usual cattle bones and from there the story led to the Queensland Museum experts, culminating in over 80 digs and the new Eromanga facility. Robyn herself has become quite an expert and a devotee of palaeontology. Eromanga is a very small town more known for its extensive opal mining and more lately, oil drilling producing around 1.5 million barrels a year.
SEE IT: Robyn Mackenzie explains the dinosaur and megafauna bones and cleaning process to the children at the TQ film shoot at the Eromanga Natural History Museum field station on June 28, 2013. PHOTO: ELIZABETH NANKIVELL
But the fossil finds, and the older Living History Museum with its superb memorabilia have put the town firmly on the tourism map. A visit to Eromanga
would not be complete without lunch or dinner at the Royal Hotel where you’re likely to meet such characters as Giggles, an opal miner for many years and a teller of tall tales.
You may even persuade him to take you out to his tenement to do a bit of fossicking. GETTING THERE Brisbane to Quilpie 954km by road, or by Rex
Airlines via Wellcamp and Charleville twice weekly. The flight continues on to Windorah and Birdsville, then Bedourie, Boulia and Mt Isa. www.rex.com.au.

THERE is one thing Outback Queensland offers apart from its well-known bush hospitality, the country air and big skies of a night … its history. Barcaldine Shire Mayor Rob Chandler sums it up well when he says: “We are Australia’s history .. Australia grew from inside out when it opened up the outback.’’ There are few better places to understand a chapter in Australia’s history than at the Tree of Knowledge in this town that was built on sheep. In 1891 the ghost gum directly in front of the railway station witnessed a divisive confrontation that threatened to plunge the nation into civil war as striking shearers stopped non-union labourers arriving by train to fill their jobs. The strike was a bitter campaign fuelled by lowering of shearers’ conditions by sheep
station owners. Now, 125 years later, a dramatic reconstruction of the seven-metre high tree stands outside the station where visitors are welcomed with tourism being an integral part of the Barcaldine Shire’s economy. Celebrations for the anniversary will be highlighted on by a town party and street parade on May 1 this year. Yet in 1891 the wool industry was the unrivalled economic pillar of the colony of Queensland. The 200-year-old ghost gum saw protesting sheep shearers mark the foundation of the Australian Labor Party. Striking shearers marched under the Eureka flag to put forward their protests against poor working conditions and low wages. In a 7.30 Report broadcast on ABC TV in 2009 historian Peter Forrest acknowledged the Tree of Knowledge was

by workers at the former Queensland Department of Primary Industries. Several cuttings propagated from the tree before its death are now growing in Barcaldine, as well as Brisbane and at the National Arboretum Canberra. A new memorial on the site of the remains of the original tree won The Lachlan Macquarie Award for Heritage Architecture and a National Commendation for Public Architecture at the 2010 National Architecture Awards. To stand beneath the timber construction above the trunk and exposed roots brings an awareness of the struggle of those early workers and settlers. Chandler, who was born into a sheep and cattle grazing family, sees

tourism as the saviour of western Queensland. After leaving school he went shearing then ran the family station until extreme drought and a collapse in wool prices forced a change. He started a timber-cutting business then hospitality, first with a farmstay then a motel in town. As well as mayor he has been a long-time board member of the Outback Tourism Association, a prime motivator behind charity organisation Angel Flight and its annual
Outback Trailblazer event. “Tourism,” Chandler says, “is the future. “The drought is hurting everyone. Making visitors welcome is what it’s about. We have to make them feel they are part of the survival of the bush, which they are. “The Tree of Knowledge is one of things people have to do. “The fact you can see when the lights are on the shape of the tree as it was from 1896 is pretty special.’’ Two architects who designed the new tree
also refurbished the century-old historic Globe Hotel that reopened late last year as a multi-million-dollar community cultural precinct. Almost $2.5 million has been spent on the redevelopment of the iconic hotel, now known as The Globe Visitor Information Centre. The pub, which was built in 1910, was purchased by the Barcaldine Regional Council, and now includes an art gallery, function room and history room.

LADIES’ NIGHT is the story of four unemployed mates, motivated by The Chippendales to form a male stripping act in order to make some fast cash. They pitch the notion to a local club owner and take tutelage from a kind-hearted dance instructor, in what women really want from a male stripper – and how to deliver it. Written in 1987 by Anthony McCarten and Stephen Sinclair, a decade before the film The Full Monty, Ladies’ Night is New Zealand’s most commercially successful play of all time. Spice up winter by making chilli jam As we come into Australia’s winter months, it’s a nice idea to make and store some chilli jam for when your family needs a kick of heat. Ingredients: 75 grams roasted and crushed peanuts 2 tbls Thai roasted chilli paste available in Asian section of your supermarket 1 ½ tbls fish sauce 2 tbls palm sugar or brown sugar ¼ cup sweet chilli sauce ¼ cup water
HOME COOKING CHRISTINE PERKINS IF you’re anything like me, you’ll know that a little bit of chilli can bring to life any meal. It’s not everyone’s favourite food, especially children, but this sweeter alternative to chilli’s traditional hot flavour, could spell a brighter future for this pepper.
To make coconut chilli jam add 50 grams toasted shredded coconut and stir. Method Combine all ingredients in small saucepan and bring to a simmer, stir and remove from heat when sugar has dissolved. Bottle leftover jam. The jam will keep for a few months in a sealed container or jar and also makes a nice gift. Use on pan fried salmon as a special treat.
TRY IT: Hmong honey chicken with sesame and lime.

For a loving farewell .... not an expensive one

HMONG chicken is a beautiful healthy recipe with wonderful succulent chicken pieces. Try and use free range chicken, it’s tastier! The finer you cut the ingredients for the marinade the less you have to pound in the pestle and mortar so it will save you time in the long run. Serves 4 Ingredients: Chicken Marinade 1.5 kilos chicken pieces skin on (you can discard before eating) ½ cup golden shallots peeled and finely diced 2 stalks of lemongrass very finely chopped
2 Tbls ginger or galangal peeled and finely grated 3 Tbls fish sauce 3 Tbls honey 4 kaffir lime leaves 1 large red chilli Garnish 3 kaffir lime leaves very finely shredded 2 tbls honey 2 tbls toasted sesame seeds Method Place chicken in a large bowl. In a pestle and mortar pound the shallots, lemongrass, galangal/ginger, and chilli to a paste. Add the fish sauce, honey and torn kaffir lime leaves and stir to combine.
Pour the marinade over chicken pieces and toss to coat. Refrigerate and allow to marinate for several hour preferably overnight if possible. To cook Pre heat oven to 180c. Pre heat barbecue. Cook chicken on a barbecue grill until golden turning regularly then place in a 180c oven for 20-25 minutes depending on size of chicken pieces until cooked through. Place on a serving platter when cooked drizzle with extra honey, sprinkle sesame seeds and finely shredded kaffir lime leaves.
