Honoured with medal French remember Harry Anstey for his part in D Day landings IT TOOK the French government a long time to think about things, Harry Anstey said with a chuckle. But even waiting 72 years did not pale the honour of receiving that country’s highest decoration, the French Legion of Honour. Mr Anstey said he was "over the moon" with the presentation at the memorial garden and cenotaph of the Currumbin RSL Club, where he is a member. "It’s a big honour. It’s the highest medal you can receive and they made it very special," he said. Mr Anstey was in the British Royal Marines and a part of the British forces in the D Day landings at Normandy on June 6, 1944. It was one of the largest amphibious assaults in history and turned the tide in the fight for Europe’s liberty from the Nazis. "There is a profound moral difference between
the use of force for liberation and the use of force for conquest," Currumbin RSL president Ron Workman OAM said in his address. "Harry, you were there to liberate, not to conquer and so you and your compatriots did not doubt your cause. And you were right not to doubt." Mr Anstey said although the French decided on the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landings to honour veterans who had fought for the country’s liberation, it had taken two years for all the protocols to be verified and, as he said philosophically, "I didn’t mind, I wasn’t going anywhere". Born in the harbour town of Poole in Dorset, England in 1925, Mr Anstey was 14 when war was declared. His town was bombed and he worked with the home guard before volunteering for the Royal Marines in 1942. He doesn’t talk much about those months

of battle in France, but admits the memories are vivid. The fact that despite living for many years in England, just a 70 mile ferry trip from those beaches, he never wanted to return, speaks volumes for the experience. Back in the UK, he completed commando training, earning his Green
Beret before travelling to Bombay, India, Singapore, Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong, where he heard that the Americans had dropped a bomb on Japan. With the war over, he met and married his wife Lucie, back in England. After Mr Anstey’s retirement in 1990, they followed their only son
Join the French to celebrate freedom THIS year’s Bonjour French Festival at Broadbeach will be tinged with sadness as it celebrates all things French. The festival runs from November 11–13 and a memorial service will be held on the Sunday to mark a year since the terror attack on Paris, and to remember the victims
of the Nice attack. Organiser Audrey Mates-Bills said it would allow the French community to join with others on the Gold Coast in a stand for freedom and love. A condolences book will be available. But the festival is a chance to celebrate life, and last year about 15,000 people joined in

and the inaugural outdoor French film. Entry to the festival at Kurrawa Park, Broadbeach is $5 a day for adults (over 12) on Saturday (9am–10pm) and Sunday (10am–5pm). Gold coin donation for movie entry Friday (5–10pm). For more, go to www.bonjourfrench festival.com.au.

decision not to mention his new medal, his fifth that he will wear with much pride.

magnificent voice, the bold personality, is good humoured and gracious. And at 63 years old, she seems to be running at the same speed that drove the 16-year-old Afro-American to audition and win a role in the Australian stage production of rock musical Hair. During the production, she found out she was pregnant with her first child. Marcia gave birth to baby (Deni Hines) and stayed on to become an Australian citizen. Marcia fell in love with Australia and Australia fell in love with Marcia. By 1973, she had signed up for the major role of Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar. The show’s success made her a serious star. From 1976 she was named Queen of Pop for three
consecutive years Marcia has also kept her friends from that era, including former Countdown host and rock journalist Molly Meldrum. She said they didn’t see each other that often, but when they did, there was still plenty to talk about. “We start talking and I look at the time and it could be 3am,” she laughed. Great friends, family, her daughter and godchildren ranging from four to 43 years old hold a special place in the big heart of Marcia Hines. In 2003, the next generation of youth had their own turn at discovering Marcia when she completed five series as a judge on television show Australian Idol, returning for the seventh series. In 2007, Marcia was

Check out the great buildings
ON Saturday, November 5, Gold Coast City Council, partnered by the National Trust and Australian Institute of Architects, will again throw open the doors to more than 30 of the city’s more quirky, interesting and significant buildings from Coomera to Currumbin, including those to which the public does not usually have access. Gold Coast Open House chair, architect Greg Ewart, said this year’s list of buildings was impressive. “The buildings on display this year create a snapshot of the evolution of architecture on the Gold Coast, with some buildings dating back to the late 1800s, early 1900s, through to cutting-edge design of recent years by some of the Gold Coast’s leading architects,” he said. Guided and self-guided tours will be available and volunteer greeters are required. To volunteer, register online and details go to at www.goldcoastopens house.com.au.

BILL Hardy would like nothing better than to see men over 60 lined up around the block to do his Be Healthy fitness classes. It’s not that he makes a lot of money from them at just $3–6 a
person per session, but he believes men feel so much better both in and about themselves when they make the effort to train. Bill runs four fitness classes a week specifically for men – two at Robina which are now

IN JUST the first two weeks of a three-month trial at Burleigh, a beach access mat to help people with mobility restrictions, and special beach wheelchairs has made quite an impact. But to date, seniors haven’t taken full advantage of the mat, which also forms a supportive base across the soft sand for those needing other walking and mobility aids. "Just the fact the equipment is there on the beach and that this is an option has been a really positive conversation piece," Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park Surf Life Saving Club vice-president Tony Martin said. The free equipment is available 9am–12pm on Saturdays until the end of April, and leads down to the hard sand or the water’s edge, depending on the tide. It is then up to families or carers to help the person enter the water if they wish to.

IT’S not often you receive a letter saying "well done" from the Queen of England. But that’s exactly what has happened for a group of women at Arcare aged care at Hope Island. It all started with lifestyle co-ordinator Allison Ferguson and volunteer Lesley Forbes who, Allison admits, think "a little out of the box" when it comes to activities that will give residents a sense of community, purpose and empowerment. Airlie Meiklejohn, Patricia Winnell, Rita Petersons and Carol Smart, as well as Lesley and Allison, handcrocheted 1000 flowers, gathered and stiffened them, sewed on about 5000 pearls, glued on diamantes, and made it all into a breathtaking vintage wedding dress, which features doilies up to 100 years old, gathered

by recycling your things, you are reducing landfill and giving your unwanted item a new home. ■ Declutter your space – it’s an opportunity to clean out your wardrobe and go through your kitchen cupboards and linen closet and pass on your items to a new home. Op shops to visit: Mission Australia, St Vinnie’s, RSPCA, Lifeline, Australian Red Cross and Salvos. Online op shopping: eBay, etsy, gumtree and tushare.
BUDGET HIGH TEA
Some items you will need to find from your local op shops to help with your budget high tea include linen – a tablecloth, napkins and a blanket and cushions if it’s picnic style; crockery – plates, teacups and saucers and serving dishes; cutlery – silver service at minimal cost, put them in an old tin or milk jug. Add flowers to small glasses or jars for decoration.

ONE way to keep to budget is to ask people to bring a plate of food. You can send out the menu and let your friends choose what they would like to make. See Nicky’s tips for teacups and pots. Bubbly with a marinated strawberry can make all the difference. Sprinkle halved strawberries with a bit of sugar and add a small amount of Cointreau or brandy, marinate for one hour and slide onto the top of the glass. Cucumber sandwiches are simple, delicious and cheap, together with salmon croutons. Mini cupcakes look great and taste great, too. The secret is to do as

Why have older women YOU probably won’t recognise her. She’s usually clean, tidy and you can identify her social status as lying somewhere in the circle of middle class. You might feel you have some connection, perhaps you recall your kids went to school with her kids, or at one stage you were on the same committee. But you rarely see her around these days and, come to think of it, when you do see her, well, she’s a little bit shabby, a little bit sad. Anyway, she doesn’t make a show of herself. In fact, she’s generally invisible. This woman is a statistic, one that makes up the

fastest growing group of homeless Australians – the older woman. Shocking statistics reveal one-in-four women aged more than 55 years make up this category. Yet, it can be hard to pick these women. They’re not obvious, except their accommodation consists of sharing flats, couch surfing, uncomfortably living with family or, worst-case scenario, living quietly from a car. It’s an extraordinary
situation brought on by everyday factors these women have lived with – limited education, free care-giving, glass ceiling, pay inequality, divorce, part-time work and career breaks that have finally resulted in a lack of superannuation funds and assets. Media commentator, author and businesswoman Jane Caro says this lack of financial security in later life is the “reward for a lifetime of self-sacrifice”. For these women, superannuation contributions have stagnated when they have taken time out from the paid workforce to look after others – children, parents, partners. They have

— Jane Caro taken a dip when casual/part-time work is chosen to leave time for domestic life. Ms Caro said statistics showed women may never recover from a divorce, while for men it is a one-off financial hit. The disparity is often due to women taking on the children, while men are more able to actively sustain a career. This is the social background behind the new poor – and about to
when women were finally allowed to keep bank jobs after they were married. Today, even in jobs of equal value there is a gender pay disparity. At 59-years-old, Jane Caro, refers to “my generation”’ of women. A generation of women who found thoughts of romance as far more interesting than finances. She said men were brought up to be, hard-headed and pragmatic. On the other hand, “women have been trained from birth not to ask things for themselves.” Ms Caro is speaking up on behalf on these women and she says unless we wish to see a lot more senior women out on the street, then
we must act. Her suggestions envelop changes to housing, education and welfare policies, including: ■ For every unit development of 70 or more, two should be put aside for social housing. Among other things, this would stop the development of ghetto-like areas of social housing. ■ Provide significant incentives to employ older workers and proper recognition of skill base. ■ Increase the pension to a living wage. ■ Education and financial advice available freely through local communities. “Better late, than never,” Ms Caro explained.

Well-meaning men were more interested in the education of sons rather than daughters and mothers gently advised their daughters to marry well and support their man. Take your Kindle to the next level
Let’s ‘kindle’ your interest in e-readers ■ WHAT IS A KINDLE OR E-READER? E-READERS are handheld electronic devices that allow users to read digital versions of books, newspapers, magazines or other documents, all on the one device. A Kindle is the most common brand of e-reader and is designed and marketed by online shop Amazon.com. ■ WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? Rather than carry around a small library of heavy printed material, you can access hundreds of books and magazines etc on one lightweight device. E-books are normally also cheaper and once you purchase an e-book you can begin reading immediately – no need to wait for the postman. You can also easily change the
www.seniorsnews.com.au
size of the font to make reading easier. ■ WHERE DO I GET ONE? E-readers can be bought from online stores such as Amazon.com and Kogan.com, although they are also available from many physical retail stores, such as Officeworks. ■ WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVES? While many people use dedicated e-reader devices, you can also use a smartphone or electronic tablet to read books. Apple’s iBooks and its Android alternative Google Play Books are in most cases already installed on such devices when you purchase them.
■ BOOKMARK A PAGE TO SET a bookmark on the Kindle Paperwhite, tap in the upper-right corner of the screen. A flag appears, along with the location and section of the book, with a plus sign in a circle. To set the bookmark, tap the plus sign. The flag darkens, indicating the marked location. After you set a bookmark, tap the upper-right corner of the screen and a small menu appears, displaying all the bookmarks that have been set in the book. When you tap a bookmarked location, a window insert opens. You can read the page from
the insert or go directly to it by tapping the page. To return to your former location, navigate by bookmark or use the Back icon from the toolbar. All Kindles come with a pre-loaded user guide of ‘how to’ instructions for your device. ■ HIGHLIGHT TEXT OR MAKE NOTES YOU can highlight text to refer to later or add your own notes (like you would in the margins of a printed book) to a particular passage. To do so, select the text by touching your finger to a word and dragging it across the screen. The selected text turns white on a black background.
v LIKE US ON FACEBOOK facebook.com/seniorsnews.com.au
When you release your finger, a pop-up window offers the options: Share, Add Note, Highlight, More. If you tap ‘Highlight’ the text will appear as black text on a grey background. If you tap ‘Add Note’ a pop-up window appears with a text entry block and the on-screen keyboard. Type your notes and tap ‘Save’. To view all your notes, highlights etc for an e-book, tap the top of the screen to display the toolbar. Then tap ‘Menu’, and then ‘View Notes & Marks’. All your notes and highlights, as well as the popular highlights for that e-book, will be displayed.

THE Miles Franklin Literary Award is Australia’s most prestigious literature prize. Established through the will of My Brilliant Career author, Miles Franklin, the prize is awarded each year to a novel which is of the highest literary merit and presents Australian life in any of its phases. The award first presented in 1957, helps to support authors and to foster uniquely Australian literature. Miles Franklin believed that: “Without an indigenous literature, people can remain alien in their own soil.” She also had first-hand experience of struggling to make a living as a writer and was the beneficiary of two literary prizes herself. DEATH. Debt. Divorce. Downsize – the four biggies to de-cluttering. Listening to a radio program on the subject, I found myself nodding in agreement. Clearing a household of stuff after a death or divorce, or because of debt, is traumatic indeed. Then there is the downsizing, the one I relate to most, as I’ve just gone through it. It’s forced de-cluttering. Unless you have to, you’re not going to get rid of decades of accumulated furniture, accessories and junk. Anyone who has reached a good age (over 40, even 30, let alone 60) has accumulated stuff. It lurks in cupboards, wardrobes, drawers and generally makes itself at
home in every nook of your property. But when you move from a four– bedroom home to a two-bedroom apartment, the junk simply has to go. First, you must grit the teeth and hire a skip. Endless trips to the tip and op shops follow, as the piles of stuff mount up as cupboards and drawers are emptied. “Why have we three graters, two woks, five juicers, 12 sheet sets... and what the heck is this?” you’ll say as you cull. Determination is called for. You simply cannot keep the three crystal vases given as wedding presents in 1968. There will be tears. When it is over and the last clothes bag is off to the op shop, you will feel younger. The freedom of living in a smaller space with modest belongings can’t be overstated. It’s marvellous to open a drawer to find just one of everything. So even if you’re not facing one of the four Ds, why not declutter anyway?

■ BURLEIGH HEADS LADIES
A SPRINGTIME Luncheon was held at the Burleigh Heads Golf Club to celebrate the Club’s 29th birthday. Members were asked to dress in bright attire and the room was a picture with balloons, coloured serviettes and growing floral arrangements on each table. The efforts of Sandra were greatly appreciated. President Pat Cowling welcomed members and guests and used the occasion to present 10-year membership pins to Vivien Fleming, Peg Whittaker and Barbara Garvan. The birthday cake was cut by Foundation Members Rhondda Deane and Stella Phillips, who spoke on the formation of the Club. The friendliness of the Club was emphasised by Val Fordham in a Toast and Faye Lindsay spoke on the welcome she had received. A delicious lunch was enjoyed and the room was full of happy chatter and laughter.
■ BURLEIGH WATERS
GENERAL Meetings are held on the 3rd Monday of each month and our September speaker was Club President Col Kuchel, who gave members an insight to his interesting and diverse life. It is now 40 years since Probus started in Australia and our club celebrated this notable event with a special cake for morning tea and a presentation by past president, Brian Hallam. After each of our meetings, we enjoy more fellowship over lunch at the Burleigh Sports Club. Our golfers also won the Gold Coast and Northern Rivers Association event for the second consecutive year. The walking group enjoyed the beautiful coastline at Coolangatta as they made their way to Point Danger. Retired or semi-retired men are invited to join us at club meetings, 10am on the 3rd Monday of each month at Burleigh Waters Community Centre, 131 Christine Ave, Burleigh Waters. Nominally a men’s club but wives or partners are very welcome to share the club’s fellowship, friendship and fun at all club meetings and outings. Please contact Brian on 5520 6332 or Colin on 0427 272 829 for more information about the club.

A Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Case Study
M
avis is an 89-year-old lady who was referred to the Wesley Hyperbaric Centre by her vascular surgeon in a final attempt to save her leg from amputation. Mavis’s story began when she walked under a gum tree where a small branch was located. She stood on the branch and in turn, it pierced her left ankle. Her wound started to ooze and over time formed into an ulcer.
Mavis reported, “I can’t speak highly enough for everybody concerned at the Wesley Hyperbaric Centre and that’s all the doctors, all the nurses and all the new friends I have made in there. I did wish to swim in the sea for my birthday and that wish has been fulfilled. They saved my leg and I can now just about run up the beach.”
Mavis told us -“My specialist said that if they couldn’t cure my ulcer it would mean an amputation. I said to him, 'Please, never take my leg off.’” When she first arrived at the WCHM she was very apprehensive and had intense discussions before allowing the nurses to treat her wound. After a couple of weeks this apprehension passed and she realised that she was in good hands and that the team was focussed on ensuring that she would not lose her leg. Over the course of her 49 hyperbaric treatments she developed close friendships with the WCHM team and other people receiving treatment. After her hyperbaric treatments were completed Mavis received outpatient wound care on a regular basis over three months. In that time, she went from only being able to sleep in a chair due to the pain in her leg, to sleeping back in her normal bed. Mavis’s remarks were, “I have been the happiest person and everybody can see the change in me because I’m back to being myself after I’d say at least 7 months of going through extreme pain and being unable to lie down. It’s only been the last couple of months that I’ve been able to lie in bed.”

JOE lives – despite himself. Driven by the need to atone for the neglect of a single tragic summer’s night, he works at nothing jobs and trains his body and mind. On the other side of the city, graphic designer Elise is watching her marriage bleed out. She retreats to a place of meaning – the tiger enclosure at the zoo, to sketch the beautiful killers. Leap is a urban fairytale about human and animal nature, and the power of grief. ■ Myfanwy Jones ■ Allen and Unwin ■ RRP $26.99
Mavis’ story... Healing a debilitating arterial ulcer
When Mavis arrived at the Wesley Centre for Hyperbaric Medicine she had already undergone all the reasonable treatments available to improve the blood flow to her leg, but unfortunately it hadn’t improved. She had a debilitating arterial ulcer to her left leg for over six months at the time of her first review at the WCHM. Her ulcers were painful and she had significant weeping from them. She was sleeping in a chair with her leg down to help blood circulation and as a consequence her leg was quite swollen. Re-perfusion of her leg was an option but this was considered a significant risk.
2. ADJUSTABLE BEDS from $1,849 ($18p/w) in king single, * All sizes available * Adjustable queen bed base from $1,260 ($13p/w)
Urban tale
During one of her visits to the WCHM, Mavis mentioned her 90th birthday was approaching and she would love to be able to spend it in the surf on the Gold Coast. The arterial ulcer to her left leg healed completely 2 weeks before her birthday and the WCHM team organised a morning at the Gold Coast where Mavis was able to enjoy seawater on her legs for the first time in years.

gardening Growing tips for the month of October
Yates Salvia ‘Blue Bedder’ Cool shades of blue are a welcome relief during the heat of summer. These compact annual salvias with many spikes of blue flowers look very impressive when grown en masse or as a border and potted plant. Seeds can be sown direct into a sunny spot in the garden (or pot) or can also be raised in trays of Yates Seed Raising Mix. Seeds take 14–21 days to germinate and should be kept moist during germination and establishment. It takes around 12 weeks for Salvia ‘Blue Bedder’ to flower. Cut the plants back after flushes of flowers to encourage new growth. Info at: www.yates.com.au
THE middle of spring is yet another wonderful time for gardeners. Plants are smothered in fresh foliage and flowers, many fruit trees show the promise of their summer harvest and the vegie patch is humming. Happy gardening everyone! Beautiful blueberries IF home-grown, freshly picked blueberries sound tempting, then it’s time to find a spot at your place for a blueberry bush or two. Blueberries prefer an acidic, well-drained soil. In areas with alkaline soil (a pH higher than 7), applications of Yates Soil Acidifier Liquid Sulfur every month will help lower the soil pH. Blueberries will benefit from regular applications of a complete plant food during spring.
TASTY EATING: Juicy Dragon Fruits - exotic fruits from Vietnam that can be grown in Queensland.
Yates Thrive Strawberry & Berry Fruit Liquid Plant Food is ideal for blueberries as it’s fortified with extra potassium to encourage fruiting. Spring citrus care Citrus trees have a shallow root system which can be prone to drying out. As citrus trees are flowering and setting their new crop of fruit during spring, it’s important not to let citrus dry out as trees can drop their fruit if
drought stressed. Soil which is rich in organic matter is better able to retain moisture. Regularly applying Yates Dynamic Lifter Organic Plant Food around the root zone of citrus will help increase the soil’s organic matter content and its ability to store moisture. After applying Yates Dynamic Lifter, adding a layer of organic mulch around the roots will help to reduce moisture loss.

OCCASIONAL toothache due to a lost filling or broken filling may initially cause only minor inconvenience. Without prompt dental attention, this pain will become more severe, causing problems throughout the day such as eating and at night-disturbing sleep. How long can you survive on painkillers? Painkillers bought over-the-counter for relief from toothache should not be taken with some prescribed medicines as this combination can cause major medical problems. Some “stronger” painkillers can also
cause drowsiness and dizziness. These unexpected effects can involve any medication which may be over-the-counter, “alternative” or even a prescribed medicine. Don’t rely on painkillers. Minimise unexpected problems by regular dental care and make sure you have ‘Dentist In A Box®, the “no mess/no fuss” kit for common dental problems. About the size of a CD case, ‘Dentist In A Box® kits easily fit into the glove-box, hiking day-pack or hand bag. Go to www.dentist inabox.com.au or call 1300 THE KIT (843 548).
Need better sleep? ARE you excessively tired during the day? Do you wake up feeling unrefreshed? Are you grumpy and moody? You could have sleep apnoea. Men with obstructive sleep apnoea have repeated partial obstruction of the upper airway during deep sleep and this results in snoring and episodes of ceasing breathing for short periods of time. When this occurs, the oxygen levels in the blood begin to fall and carbon dioxide levels rise until a protective mechanism kicks in and the body is startled to wake from the deep sleep. Each time the sufferer goes back into the deep sleep, the same thing occurs and this can happen many times during
GOOD MEDICINE Dr MICHAEL GILLMAN each night. As a result, there is insufficient deep sleep and ongoing tiredness occurs. It is often your bed partner who notices the snoring, the gasping and tossing and turning etc. Apart from the tiredness and grumpiness, obstructive sleep apnoea can also cause more serious health issues such as high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, erection problems, low testosterone levels and depression. Men with obstructive sleep apnoea are also two
and a half times more likely to be involved in a motor vehicle accident because of decreased concentration and slower reaction times. Most men with obstructive sleep apnoea are overweight. However some men will have narrow facial structure or narrow throat and can still have the condition even if they are not overweight. Sleep apnoea is diagnosed with a sleep study which will measure the stages of sleep and the number of arousals from deep sleep and the oxygen levels. This study can be dome in a sleep laboratory or at your own home. The results are analysed and a diagnosis is made. Treatment includes losing weight if you a.
are overweight or obese. It may also include various devices such as mouth splints through to Continuous Positive Airway Pressure masks (CPAP devices). There are even some surgical options that can help if there is an abnormality of the anatomy of the upper throat. Your sleep physician will advise on the best therapy for your particular condition. So if your partner says that you snore and gasp at night, it would be worthwhile seeing your GP for a referral for a sleep study. Not only will you feel brighter, happier and more alert, it may stop you from developing other serious health complaints. DrMichaelGillman.com

All Things Legal DEALING WITH A DEATH IN THE FAMILY – WHY DO YOU NEED PROBATE?
Losing someone you love can be devastating enough. Not only are you grieving the loss of this person, but you may also be tasked with the role of finalising their affairs as the executor of their Will, often the last thing on your mind in your grief-stricken state. Just the thought of it can be daunting because it is unfamiliar territory and it’s certainly not a situation any one wishes to be placed in. Unfortunately, it’s a situation you are likely to find yourself in throughout your lifetime. During the process, it is common to hear foreign terms such as “Probate” or “Letters of Administration”. Generally, the majority of people have never heard of either of these terms and those who have tend to have misconceptions about what they actually mean. We often hear statements such as, “there’s a Will so why do we need Probate?” or “we don’t need Probate because our family gets along”. 99% of the time we are simply asked, “What is Probate?” and “Why do we need Probate?”. It is important to understand what Probate (or Letters of Administration) is in order to appreciate why it is required to administer a deceased estate. What is Probate? A grant of Probate is essentially confirmation by the Supreme Court of the authenticity of the last Will of the deceased. The process involves advertising with the prescribed legal publications to ensure that there are no later Wills in existence and a subsequent application to the Supreme Court to effectively “prove” the last Will. An affidavit sworn by the executor is filed with the Court, and the document itself is inspected by the Probate Registrar with a fine tooth comb to confirm its validity. What are Letters of Administration? A grant of Letters of Administration is the equivalent to a grant of Probate in the circumstances where a person has died intestate, ie without a Will or without a valid Will. This grant is also required if the executor of the will has died, has lost capacity or has renounced. The administrator (akin to an executor) is appointed by the Supreme Court. This grant is more difficult to obtain and priority to apply is determined by the rules of intestacy in the relevant States. Why is Probate required? You may often hear from someone you know, whose mother/father/brother/sister died, that they didn’t need Probate compelling you to question why it is required at all. After all, there is a Will so why does it become so complicated after the fact? Yes, there are circumstances in which the executor will not be required to obtain Probate. This is may be the case where the assets are jointly held or it is considered a “small estate”, where the assets of the estate are of low value. However, it is important to understand that every estate is different. There is no stock-standard estate plan because the personal and financial circumstances of each person are varied. There are many issues to consider when it comes to the duty of an executor and the administration of the estate, however, the most common reasons for obtaining Probate are outlined below:Authority to deal with assets Most asset holders will not release or transfer assets held by a deceased person until a grant of Probate has been provided to them. For example, in New South Wales the sale or transfer of all real property held solely in the name of the deceased cannot be carried out without a grant of Probate or Letters of Administration. Generally, most banks and financial institutions will not release the contents of a person’s bank accounts if the value is over a certain threshold. There is no set or standard value, and each financial institution determines its own value at their discretion. It can also depend upon the family dynamics and who the beneficiaries are (and how many). For example, if a male dies and has several de facto partners with children from different marriages, it is unlikely a bank will release funds without a grant and, even if they do, they require indemnities to be given. Production of the grant effectively ensures that the executor is legally authorised to deal with the assets. There are certain procedures set out by the Supreme Court to flush out any prior Wills and if a grant is not issued it is almost impossible to determine that the last Will is in fact the last testament of the deceased. Essentially, the asset holder is guaranteed that they are in fact dealing with the correct legal personal representative and if a later Will is found the liability rests with the executor for intermeddling with the estate. Protection from claims There are certain statutory time limits imposed by the respective Succession Acts in each State and Territory for an executor to safely distribute the assets of an estate. These time limits are in place to allow any person whom is eligible to make a claim for provision from the estate sufficient time to provide their notice (“eligible applicant”). For example, in New South Wales, the executor must wait 12 months from the date of death before he/she may safely distribute the assets of the estate to the beneficiaries. The reason for this is that an eligible applicant has 12 months from the date of death to file their claim. There is the option to distribute after 6 months from date of death by publishing a ‘Notice of Intended Distribution’ with the Supreme Court of New South Wales. It should also be served upon any known eligible applicants. If no one comes forward within 30 calendar days from the date of publication then the executor may safely proceed with distribution. In Queensland, there is a 6 month notice period from the date of death for people to give notice of a claim against the estate and legal proceedings must be filed no later than 9 months from the date of death if that notice has been given. It is therefore prudent to wait at least 9 months from the date of death before distributing but this can be shortened with written confirmation from any potential claimants they will not bring a claim. Statutory protection is only afforded to the executor or administrator when Probate or Letters of Administration are obtained. If a grant is not obtained, they leave themselves open to liability for any claims brought against the estate by creditors or beneficiaries. Take for an example, the instance where an executor distributes the assets in accordance with the Will without obtaining Probate. An illegitimate child or a former spouse may come out of the woodwork (as is often the case) after hearing of the death some time after the fact with the intent to seek provision from the estate (i.e. bring a claim against the estate). If the assets have been distributed prior to the requisite statutory time period, and no notice has been given to the public of the distribution the executor becomes personally liable. This is despite the fact the executor has acted in good faith and distributed the assets in accordance with the contents of the last will of the deceased. There is also the possibility a later will could be in existence without the knowledge of the executor. There are many good reasons to obtain a grant of probate if you are an executor! Don’t listen to back yard legal advice or get advice from lawyers who don’t specialise in this area. In most cases, the reason an executor chooses not to obtain Probate is because they do not want to incur the cost of doing so. They are often misinformed or have not been provided with the correct advice in relation to the liability that goes hand in hand with their duty as an executor. We strongly advise any executors or administrators to carefully consider their position and obtain accurate legal advice from experienced legal practitioners in this complex area. It may save you a lot of grief and money! Technology can ensure security “FOR two daysI lay on the floor of my home in horrific pain, unable to pick myself up, call for help, make it to the bathroom, unable to determine just how injured I was. Not a single soul knew I was in trouble. “I’d never felt so ashamed or so helpless than I did during those 48 hours. “I’d always prided myself on being able to take care of myself, but I quickly realised just how vulnerable I was. Lucky for me, my story has a happy ending. I was thankfully found and given the care I needed.” “But the whole episode was traumatising. I didn’t know during the 48 hours I was stranded, that I was going to be found in two days. Afterwards I suffered from anxiety and panic attacks.” This is just one of the true stories inspiring EMS to find solutions to keep people in their homes safely for longer. With the safeTcare
model, our clients are monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. The device is the latest technology and, more importantly, simple to use. Everyone deserves the freedom to take charge of their independence and stay in their own home for as long as they safely can. Words like dignity, spring to mind. Since the 1990s we have provided solutions to both the security and Emergency Medical Alert Services. The security industry has many rules and regulations, the medical alert industry does not. Standards for this industry must be created and, as a company, act accordingly. It is our goal to see this materialise. travel Alaska’s rich history Ann Rickard
FOR SENIORS who insist on comfort when they travel but like a bit of robust adventure, the options are often limited. A cruise to Alaska tops the list if you enjoy frontier towns with a rich past and don’t mind the occasional bawdy saloon. Holland America’s mid-sized ship, Nieuw Amsterdam, is your go-to for luxury and adventure. It took us to Inside Passage on a week-long round trip from Vancouver, visiting Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan. The ship docked in the heart of each town – easy to disembark to explore on foot and later go into the wilds for offshore excursions involving seaplanes, helicopters and trains. The raw beauty of Alaska’s frontier towns with their rainforest mountainsides, serene waterways and beautiful lakes played backdrop to an undiscovered world to us. In Juneau we stepped back in time at the Red Dog Saloon, where the raspy voice of the old bloke on the piano brought to vivid life the heyday of the glorious gold mining era. In Skagway, the boom town
gateway to the Klondike Gold Fields, it wasn’t difficult to imagine the town packed with 20,000 feverish gold seekers. The historic buildings are protected and most of them are home to jewellery stores. In Ketchikan, the Creek Street Historic District was once a notorious red-light district (1902–54) but is now a boardwalk above Ketchikan Creek. The old houses of ill-repute are now home to respectable gift shops, although Dolly’s House, where the infamous Madam Dolly lived and worked from 1919–70, is now a museum. From Skagway we boarded a train for the White Pass Railroad trip, a journey giving insight into the vision to build a railroad under hazardous conditions to get hopefuls to the goldfields by train rather than journey on horse and foot over treacherous land. Tunnelling through mountains, building bridges and sky-high trestles on turns of 16 degrees was difficult enough in the 1800s without also freezing winters to contend with. The astounding engineering feat of the railroad was apparent from the moment we

left, leading through granite mountains, up steep grades and around cliff-hanging turns. There were gasps of awe as the train rattled along its narrow tracks and every kilometre brought discovery: misty valleys, mountain lakes, waterfall cascades, yawning chasms and lush forests. Someone spotted a moose and we crowded the windows for this rare sighting. From Ketchikan we took a seaplane for an exhilarating 20-minute flight to Neets Bay, gliding over the mountain peaks of Revillagigedo Island. We landed on the calm and pristine water in this unspoilt place, where just seven people live and operate a salmon hatchery, ever mindful they share the island with wild bears. arrived at a gushing salmon-filled stream. Out of the thick woods, a large black bear loped down to the stream. Seconds later he’d caught his first salmon – the fish practically leaping out of the water into the bear’s mouth – and a few minutes later another bear poked her head out and made her way to the river. But there were more. Out came two small cubs, their little black bodies bobbing like yo-yos on the grass as they gambolled after their mother. Alaska delivered up one highlight after another. The day cruising in Glacier Bay was a highlight. This stunning place of mountains, fjords, glaciers, rainforest, wildlife and coastline is home to the massive ice-blue, 34km-long Margerie Glacier. Don’t go to Vienna on a diet as there are temptations on every corner that you won’t be able to resist. As a traveller, not a tourist, it behoves you to partake – well at least that’s what I managed to convince myself. Here’s eight Viennese food traditions to experience. 1. Melange coffee When coffee first came to Vienna the strong, intense flavour of the beans was a bit of a surprise to the Viennese. Some smart person decided to ‘sweeten’ freshly brewed coffee with hot milk which became known as the ‘Wiener Melange”. I would swap my normal skinny cappuccino for one of these any day of the week and it will be the first thing I have when I return. 2. Apple Strudel With or without crumbs? That’s the hot question
when it comes to making a strudel. Head to the Café Residenz Apfelstrudelshow Schönbrunn at Schloss Schönbrunn, Kavalierstrakt 52, to see how the experts make this traditional Viennese dessert. I have tried my hand at this and it wasn’t half bad. There’s a recipe on my blog. 3. Bundt cake Marmorgugelhupf is a marble bundt cake that was eaten by Emperor Franz Joseph for breakfast, daily. The cake takes its shape from the grooved sides of the pan but the recipe varies. It’s a classic afternoon tea cake or Sunday morning breakfast cake for the not-so-royal. 4. Mannerschnitten These Neopolitan wafers, you’ll recognise the classic pink wrapper, are available from the Manner store at Stephansplatz 7. They were invented by Mr Manner (of course) in 1898 in honour of Emperor Franz Josef’s golden jubilee. 5. Demel K. & K. Located in Kohlmarkt 14, this former Imperial court confectioner has a show kitchen where visitors can watch the patissiers weave their magic. It’s a busy store but it’s worth the push through to the back to see the kitchen action. The sales and serving staff have been exclusively
travel
female at Demel for 200 years. 6. Cafe Sasher The chefs at the five-star Hotel Sacher, Philharmonikerstrasse 4, have been baking Sasher Torte, a chocolate cake with apricot jam and chocolate glaze from a secret recipe since 1876. There have been court cases over who invented the recipe so I’m not going there. 7. Brasserie & Bakery, The Guesthouse Located between the State Opera and Stephansplatz, right next door to the world-famous Albertina museum, The Guesthouse Vienna serves all day breakfast and a special coffee roast made by Naber Kaffee. Designed by Sir Terrance Conran, The Guest House Vienna exudes a feeling of a ‘home away from home’ and comforts with quiet, relaxed elegance and plenty of life’s little luxuries. 8. Cafe Landtmann Taking a prime corner position, Franz Landtmann opened Cafe Landtmann, one of Vienna’s most elegant, cafes in 1873 at the start of the coffee house tradition. Patrons at Landtmann have included Sigmund Freud, Marlene Detrick, Romy Schnieider, Paul McCartney, Hillary Clinton and Kerry Heaney. * Disclaimer: Ed+bK stayed in Vienna as a guest of The Guesthouse and Vienna Tourist Board.

Walking in a lost city ❝
Go early and pack a lunch for taste of adventure in history rock and must have taken many years to create. Entry is through mountains riddled with passages and gorges, which kept the city hidden from westerners for a long time. It’s a bit of fun as you turn the corner in the Siq, a narrow passage leading to the rose city, to see the treasury building made famous at the end of an Indiana Jones movie. If you get there early enough you can even catch a selfie without the hordes of tourists who arrive later in the day. For a more special treat that not all tourists go to, hike the 900 rock steps to the Monastery building. If you’re a fan of the Transformers on the big screen, the Monastery might look rather familiar too. It’s a bit of a hike, about 45 minutes to an hour to rise and 30-40 minutes to descend but well worth it. Take a picnic lunch and set yourself up at one of the viewpoints just above

THERE’S something infinitely charming about wandering through ancient cities. The wonderment of what came before. Darting in and out of ruins imagining what life must have been like for the previous inhabitants. Petra and Jerash are two such marvels in Jordan that are must-sees in the Middle East. Petra – one of the new seven wonders of the world – is carved into the rose-coloured rocky mountains in the country’s south. Considered an architectural masterpiece, the once “lost” city is also significant for strategic reasons. Inhabited since prehistoric times, it was turned it into a caravan trading centre for Arabian incense, Chinese silks and Indian spices by the Nabatean civilisation. While there are some free-standing buildings, many are carved into the

the Monastery to take it all in. Back down in the valley, the street of tombs makes for a gorgeous photo from a distance. Ducking and weaving through the almost secret passageways in the tombs to find yourself on the edge of a mini cliff face, then working out how to get to the next tomb, is a
great adventure. If you’re not already tuckered out after seeing the colonnaded street, the church and the tombs then you can run up another 600 steps to the high place of sacrifice too. Jerash, just north the capital of Amman, is a striking scramble of ancient ruins set against a typical Middle East city.
The ruins of colonnaded streets, temples, baths, arches and an amphitheatre evoke images of togas, leafy headdresses and great feasts. Sitting in the theatre is another great chance to reflect on what shows they came to watch. Walking up the colonnaded streets, you

can picture the bustling community that once was. Hidden for centuries under sand until its restoration over the past 70 years, Jerash is considered one of the best-preserved Roman provincial towns but the Arabic influences on the once popular trading hub are evident too. These two cities are just some of what Jordan has to offer. And the country’s close proximity to Israel means Jerusalem and Bethlehem are also a stone’s throw away.
Enjoy your holiday knowing you have an expert with you every step of the way.

what’s on
Santa comes to town COME along for the ride. On Saturday, December 3, the Australian Railway Historical Society will be running the annual Santa Express steam train from Roma Street Station to Shorncliffe and return. The old Gentleman in Red will be travelling with surprises for the kids. The steam train will depart Roma St Station at 11.15am and will travel via a circuitous route to Shorncliffe, where a sausage sizzle in the park awaits. The train will return to Roma St Station, arriving at 2.10pm – times to be confirmed. The locomotive will be one of those retained by Queensland Railways for use on special occasions. The historic timberbodied carriages were mainly constructed in the 1904-1910 era. Most feature end platforms and centre aisles.

finance Shares on another bumpy ride AFTER 15-20% gains since the February lows, and a period of relative calm, shares have experienced a pull back lately. There are a few factors at play: We are now in a seasonally weak time of the year. Shares tend to rise from November to around May and then have weakness around the September quarter. There has also been an increase in value of bond yields globally, which puts pressure on both the comparative attractiveness of shares and, directly, on parts of the share market that pay high dividends and are seen as an alternative to bonds. In addition, we have a range of events pending over the next few months that may be causing investor uncertainty: The US Fed direction is unknown; the potential for
new worries about a Eurozone break up with a presidential election re-run in Austria in early October and a November referendum to reform the Italian Senate; the US election in November; and South China Sea tensions and North Korean bomb tests are likely not helping either. In Australia, a perception that we are at or close to the end of the RBA’s interest rate reductions has added to upwards pressure on local bond yields, which has affected local shares. There are several reasons why this decline in share value is more likely a 5-10% correction as opposed to a resumption of the bear market (and potential recession) that began in the June quarter last year and took many sharemarkets down 20% or more to their lows in
February this year. Bond yields are not likely to rise too far. The long term bond rally that got underway in the early 1980s is probably in the process of bottoming out – as central banks get close to the end of monetary easing, fiscal austerity gives way to fiscal stimulus and a stabilisation in commodity prices leads to lessening deflation risk. Share market valuations are not expensive for a low rate world. Australia’s spending, construction and tourism resurgence continues. Assuming recession is avoided, profit should improve. Check the small print IF YOU’RE in the market for a home loan, be sure to check the “comparison rate” as well as the headline interest rate. It could be the key to avoiding a loan stacked with unwanted fees and charges. Whenever you see a home loan advertised, chances are the main rate is advertised in big, bold font. Somewhere close by (in a less prominent font) will be the comparison rate. It’s an important piece of information but a survey by CUA found less than one in three Australians understood what the comparison rate was all about.
THINK MONEY PAUL CLITHEROE By way of background, lenders are required by law to advertise both the main interest rate as well as the comparison rate. It’s designed to help consumers make better choices because the comparison rate incorporates the annual interest rate as well as the cost of most upfront and ongoing fees. Some seemingly cheap home loans – with a lower interest rate – can be
laden with fees that make them not so cheap at all. The comparison rate reveals this and enables borrowers to compare loans on an apples for apples basis. To give an example, a $300,000 loan with an annual rate of 4.0% can look very attractive. But if it comes with upfront fees of $800 and monthly fees of $35, the comparison rate will rise to 4.22% – far higher than the stated interest rate. Paul Clitheroe is founding director of financial planning firm ipac, Australian Govt. Financial Literacy Board chairman and Money Magazine commentator.

Creative Ken Done comp entries TWO months ago we asked our readers: “What is the story behind the first Ken Done item you owned?” the responses we received were brilliant. Three lucky winners have been awarded with Ken Done’s book, A Life Coloured In: Patricia McKenna from Brisbane,
Sue Collins from Toowoomba, and Norma Kay from Northern NSW. Here is one of the winning entries from Pat Mckenna, who also included a picture of her Ken Done item. “Going to a function; nothing to wear. Saw Ken Done material; bought it
then and there. It was furnishing material. The colours were just right. Saw Ken signing scarves one day; he saw my skirt and did the same.” Pat’s skirt hangs in her wardrobe and at 80 years of age she is still very proud of it.

The challenge is to rearrange a crossword which has been broken into 25 sections. One letter has been given to get you started. Work out which 3x3 square fits in with that letter and write in the letters. You can also shade the black squares if you find it helpful. After completing the first 3x3 area, work out which square joins on to it, and continue until you have made a complete crossword.
