Winter is a great time on the Goldie
THIS month’s cover story on Ken Done heralds a wave of nostalgia. In an instant the thought of those brilliant hues takes you back to the 1980s. For many it was a time of renovating old beach-houses and ageing inner-city homes, carefully scraping back the bright oranges and mission browns of the 60s and 70s and thoughtfully re-instituting the colours of federation fashion – maroons, creams, deep greens. Then like a burst of cooling, drenching rain on

a hot Aussie afternoon, Ken Done saturated us with his astounding abstract pictures and Aussie colours. It was refreshing, fun and new and reflected the colours of our Aussie home. This month editor Gail Forrer and digital producer Taya Sweeney attended
The International Federation of Ageing 13th Annual Global Conference, sponsored by WHO – World Health Organisation – and COTA in Brisbane. You can read and listen to fascinating viewpoints and studies by thought leaders at www.facebook.com/ seniorsnews or www.seniorsnews.com. au. The Gold Coast reveals a beauty of its own in winter – crisp, clear mornings and shimmering, sun-touched waters.
It’s a good time to go for a long hike, and entrants in the Kokoda Challenge aren’t daunted by the gruelling 96km track through the hinterland. And in this issue, we also honour volunteers who work to better the lives of those around them. Spare a thought for the homeless, and contribute to the “blanket” collection being organised by funeral homes and the Salvation Army. It’s all about good team camaraderie, at any age Company culture values attributes of senior workers deliberate recruitment strategy to employ people from within a certain age bracket; this is just the way it has happened organically,” he said. “We do have a lot of staff who have been with us for a long time, who may have started in their 30s and grown up with the business. “Our own HR surveys have shown that the people who work with us don’t feel like they are just a number – they feel valued and appreciated, which comes down to our long history of being a family-owned, small-to-medium local business.” The local company is proud to be a part of a trend which is seeing a growing number of Australian employers
actively seeking to hire mature-aged workers based on their experience and work ethic, while also offering employment opportunities to an ageing population. “We have an advantage because most of our mature sales staff work the same hours each week, and they get to know regular customers by name and by what they order, and the customers really appreciate it,” Martin said. “Without wishing to alienate our many wonderful younger workers, we generally find our older team members to be more reliable and able to build a better rapport with our clientele – many of whom are in that mature-age bracket themselves.”
Martin has noticed a trend of more mature-aged workers looking to join the team in recent years, as retirees sought to offset the impact of savings and superannuation lost during the global financial crisis, or simply craved the camaraderie and social interaction of the retail environment. “We are always looking for good team members to join our retail team. We do have a lot of staff, but there are opportunities for people who fit our culture and might be looking for a long-term position,” Martin said. For more information, visit www.goldsteins.com.au.

MORE than one-third of the workers at Goldsteins Bakery are aged over 50, making the iconic family-owned business one of the Gold Coast’s biggest recruiters of mature-age workers. Goldsteins director Martin Goldstein said 37% of the company’s 102 employees were aged between 50 and 69. Most were in customer service positions across 12 bakeries, as well as administration staff and bakers, pastry chefs and cake decorators at the Molendinar headquarters. Martin said the company’s work culture had led to high employee retention rates, which in turn resulted in a rising number of older workers, as loyal staff members stayed with the company for many years. “It has not been a

Living with a piece of Ken Done Gail Forrer
IN THE 1980s Ken Done came to town and everyone invited him home. He stepped inside with abstract images, a rich, vibrant palette and presented his celebration of colour on mugs, doonas, curtains and cushions. We wore his signature dresses, t-shirts and swimmers. We drank with Ken Done cups, we wore Ken Done clothes and we slept with Ken Done quilts. Here was a man who sensed the Australia that we felt – the heat of the yellow sun, the rich blue wash of the Pacific ocean. He caught the vibration of native animals and reflected back to us the perfumed colour of our favourite flora. He was talking to all of us who loved and lived on the Australian coastline. Forty years after connecting beach loving Australians with their sun soaked coastline, artist Ken Done is taking us to the polar opposite – Antarctica. Inspired by a trip last year to the ice-riven landscape, he has recently completed a series of 30 paintings, Paintings from Antarctica. From the man who so skilfully interpreted the intensity of the Australian sun, the show presents his unique expression of a

dramatically different continent. Yet, home is where his heart remains. At 76 years old, Ken Done’s inner artist is still fed by the surrounding beauty of his Chinaman’s Bay property along with the bigger picture of Sydney and regular world travels. His long-term home and 35-year-old marriage to Judy proves that very early on, Ken realised the elements of sustainable joy. “Judy are I are like-minded,” he said. “And we have a shared visual understanding. “But in 50 years there are hills and valleys, and you just have to find way to get through them.” The couple also share two children and to their great delight, three grandchildren. Ken said a great happiness came from having his grandchildren in the art studio. He sets up the studio before their arrival and then it’s a time for fun and freedom. In fact, the youngest has coined him the

child,” he wrote, “I used drawings all the time to communicate what I felt about something.” He keeps fits with daily swims and a dally in the fresh air as he feeds the local parrots.
He doesn’t mind a game golf but admits to falling asleep watching television. This year he is preparing for a trip to islands off Scotland and he is looking forward to
making more memories. “You can’t look back for a second,” he said. “People around my age can still have a lifetime ahead of them.”

Appeal for blankets to bed down
Business joins with Salvos to warm homeless AS THE temperature drops on the Gold Coast, an appeal has been launched to collect blankets for homeless and disadvantaged people. Invocare funeral homes and The Salvation Army have joined forces in a winter blanket appeal across Queensland and Northern NSW. For every blanket donated by a member of the public, Somerville Funerals at Nerang and Southport, and Metropolitan Funerals at Southport, will hand over a new blanket to The Salvation Army. Fundraising and public relations manager for The Salvation Army (Gold Coast and Northern Rivers), Rowan Johnstone, said blankets were needed at Salvos Connect Centres, Gold Coast Accommodation Service and Gold Coast Recovery Services.
“Throughout Queensland, NSW and the ACT each night, 2500 clients of The Salvation Army are accommodated in crisis traditional housing, long-term or resident-funded services.
❝
This winter we are again responding to the needs of some of the most disadvantaged. Each week over 4500 people are provided with a bed,” he said. “(A total of ) 44,083 homeless people – 42% of Australia’s homeless – in the 2011 census were children and youth under 25 years. That’s an increase of 17% since the last census in 2006.” The Salvation Army and
Salvos stores are involved in Homeless Connect at Metricon Stadium on August 3. This event, in its ninth year, brings together service providers from the government and community sector to create a one-stop shop event that gives homeless people a day of recreation, entertainment, personal care and access to support services. “The Salvos provide the blankets and work with other members of the Gold Coast Homelessness Network to make this day happen,” Rowan said. The funeral homes’ regional manager Christine Walters said some men, women and children would struggle to keep warm, especially the homeless and those affected by drug addiction and mental illness. “This winter we are

Coast ratepayers look forward to low rate rise GOLD Coast city residents will pay the lowest annual rate increase of any south-east Queensland council – adding to five consecutive years of low rate increases. Mayor Tom Tate said the average residential rates and charges would increase 1.69% in 2016-17.
“We have done this without any special levies to fund the upcoming Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games or stage one of the cultural precinct which is now under way,” Cr Tate said. “Residents and business will also welcome news that, in 2016-17, there will be no
increase in sewerage or water service charges as well as zero increase in council’s water consumption charges. “This is a budget formed as a direct response to what people are telling me – keep rates low, maintain frontline services and put an end to spiralling water

All Things Legal? ELDER ABUSE ON THE RISE – HOW TO GET HELP!
An examination of calls made to the NSW Elder Abuse Helpline has revealed that in excess of 50,000 elderly people may have experienced some form of abuse in recent times. It is further estimated that only 1 in 5 of cases of elder abuse are reported to the appropriate authorities. Sadly, the majority of the abusers of elderly people are trusted family members, neighbours, friends or paid carers. The Helpline statistics found that 30% of the complaints related to financial abuse while more than 300 people reported psychological abuse and physical threats. The calls also showed that women aged between 75-84 years were most at risk of abuse with their children aged between 45-64 being identified as primarily responsible. According to the Australian Institute of Criminology, as many as 50,000 people over 65 years have experienced some form of abuse or neglect in NSW alone. It is likely that the figures are very similar in Queensland and other States of Australia. It is a serious social issue which cannot be ignored by families and those professionals involved in the aged health care industry.
THE Gold Coast Multicultural Festival is an annual event the whole family can enjoy. Festival association president Ben Brauer said the celebration on Sunday, August 7, would be an unprecedented display of culture including international music, dance, drumming, instrumentals, art and craft, food and cultural information – with up to 65 stalls. “There will also be international performers on three festival stages, children’s rides and activities,” he said. “Performers originate from diverse cultural communities such as Africa, Armenia, Australian Aboriginal, Bosnia, Brazil, China, Colombia, Ethiopia, Hawaii, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Middle Eastern countries including Saudi Arabia, Maori (New Zealand), ON STAGE: Performers from many countries take part in the Gold Pacific Islander, Philippines, Russia, Coast Multicultural Festival in August. What is Elder Abuse? Elder abuse takes many forms and is predominantly any abuse of a relationship with an elderly person or persons. The definition utilised by many elder abuse prevention units is as follows:“Elder abuse is a single or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust which causes harm or distress to an older person”. Abuse can occur in all manner circumstances but some of the most common are as follows:• Financial abuse – unlawfully using an Enduring Power of Attorney or illegal/unauthorised use of a persons’ bank eftpos card or making threats to an elderly person to extort money from them; • Intimidation and psychological abuse – taking advantage of an elderly person’s frail personality and forcing them to live in circumstances that they do not wish to, including threats and other behaviour designed to have the elderly person do things against their will; • Failing to properly care for elderly people in circumstances where they require assistance with basic living, dietary requirements and helping with the basics of living (this is separate to the issue of elderly people refusing to accept help); • Physical abuse – there have been cases of trusted family members physically assaulting elderly persons in order to extract money from them and/or to continue living arrangements against their will • Falsely taking advantage of an elderly person’s trust in order to have them change their Will so they leave some or all of their estate to them instead of their family or a preferred charity. These are just some of the issues affecting our elderly people and families and are probably just the tip of the iceberg. Where to Get Help? Most States have an Elder Abuse Helpline or Unit that has been specifically set up to deal with elder abuse enquiries. The Units for Queensland and New South Wales are as follows:- Queensland Elder Abuse Prevention Unit 1300 651 192 www.eapu.com.au; New South Wales Elder Abuse Helpline 1800 628 221 www.elderabusehelpline.com.au For any urgent physical threats, elderly people can dial emergency 000 or their local Police Station. Elderly people should understand that there is always a better option available to them and that no-one should suffer this type of abuse, no matter what their circumstances are, without fear of repercussions. Legal Options available. Another option available to all elderly people is to obtain proper legal advice in relation to their rights with respect to abuse by relatives or trusted family members who they have appointed as attorneys or guardians. You should ensure that you obtain appropriate legal advice from lawyers who are experienced in this area and have knowledge of health authorities and other Government instrumentalities that can assist elderly people who are in this position. Quite often the abusive family members or friends who hold powers of attorney on behalf of the elderly people use these legal documents to continue the abuse and attempt to hide behind what they maintain is the mental incapacity of the elderly person. As lawyers experienced in this area, we often come across this situation where we are contacted by a long standing client about possible financial misuse of a Power of Attorney, only to find that the relative has a carefully crafted story and blames the mental incapacity of their elderly parent or grandparent. Lawyers experienced in this area can assist elderly people to work through these issues and obtain the necessary assistance. Sometimes this means that an application will need to be made to the appropriate Tribunal for an order appointing alternative financial managers and/or guardians for an elderly persons’ affairs. In some cases the Queensland Public Trust Office or NSW Trustee & Guardian may also have to be approached to be appointed to handle someone’s affairs if there are no suitable family members or friends that are prepared to act as financial managers or guardians. Parents and grandparents can plan in advance and make sure that whoever they appoint as their attorneys and guardians are truly trusted members and you should always appoint at least two trusted people to handle your affairs and make sure that it is a joint appointment. This way it is unlikely that the two people that you have appointed would both collude to abuse the appointment as attorney or guardian (if you are concerned about this, then you should appoint an independent professional such as lawyer or accountant to accompany the trusted family member). This will ensure that your affairs are handled properly, even after you have lost capacity or are simply unable to handle your affairs due to illness or injury. Make sure you obtain advice from lawyers who specilaise in this complex area. It is usually beyond the local small firm who do conveyancing. If you are a victim of elder abuse, do not hesitate to contact the relevant Helpline in your State or Territory. If the abuse is imminent and physical, please ring your local Police or dial 000. You should also confide in your treating General Practitioner or visiting Health Professionals and they will make sure that the appropriate persons are notified and that help can be provided. Alternatively, contact your lawyers and have them review your Enduring Power of Attorney and Enduring Guardian. These are very important documents that everyone should regularly review and make sure that their affairs are going to be handled independently and with your best interests in mind. This simple attention to your legal documents could save you and your family a lot of stress, anxiety and financial loss. If you have any queries in relation to this issue or to your Estate Planning generally, please do not hesitate to contact our Wills & Estates Department Manager, Donna Tolley on free call 1800 621 071 or direct line 07 5506 8241 or email dtolley@attwoodmarshall.com.au. We offer a free 20 minute initial consultation (in person or by telephone) for any enquiries in most cases.

U3A Twin Towns’ members showed off their new-found dancing skills at a 25th birthday celebration on June 24. This branch of U3A boasts 300 members and caters for both Gold Coast and Tweed residents. Its birthday party was held at the Tom Atkin Hall, Tugun. Mary Ludwig, of Banora Point, picked up a 20-year service award at the event. Branch president Robyn Clark said Mary tutored in yoga, light exercise, and movement to music classes. “Mary has been doing so much for U3A. “She’s always been a supporter,” Robyn said. Mary refused to give her age, saying: “I’ve been 68 for a few years now, and

International perspective Gail Forrer reports ideas from global experts OLDER people are a diverse demographic, who have proven to be of great help during disasters and emergency situations rather than needing help according to experts at the International Federation of Ageing 13th annual Global Conference held in Brisbane June 21-23. While a panel of global experts talking about catastrophes and the older person presented statistics showing extremely high mortality rate next to other age groups during natural disasters, they also urged policy makers to recognise the ageing population’s diversity. Godfrey Paul, senior regional manager of HelpAid international, wasted no time in giving us a reality check. He said the 21st century as we thought it would happen had not arrived. He said we had
envisaged a contemporary world a shrunk in time and space, a tightly knit global village. Instead we have a world of war and hate. At the same time we are faced with two mega trends simultaneously converging on us – Ageing and Climate Change. Along with fellow panellists discussing the older person and natural catastrophes, he called for the stereotypical definition of the older person as the passive recipient, to be replaced with a recognition of the demographic’s diversity. Dr Lisa Brown, of California, was on the same page, but went further and suggested that older people should be considered for volunteer roles during emergencies. She said that older people could be seen as a resource for assisting, not necessarily in need of assistance. “Age in and of itself
does not make a person vulnerable. We do not place all teenagers and infants in the same category, but if a person has grey hair, we assume they are vulnerable and need services. “We need a new narrative.” She said disaster planning could be an opportunity for community development, that it was a time to talk about needs, support and peer education. Professor Junko Otani, of Osaka University, noted that Japan had the largest ageing population in the world. She called Japan a “super ageing society”. She emphasised that data revealed that during natural disaster it was peer groups and neighbours who helped the older person rather family members, thus realising the importance of social engagement in disaster planning.

Things don’t have to get tougher as you get older Gail Forrer
IF YOU think things get tougher as you get older, it’s time to think again. Over a three-day period global speakers at The nternational Federation of Aging, 13th Global Conference (June 21–23) introduced a range of new knowledge aimed towards the wellbeing of an ageing demographic. Speakers included: Oxford Academic Dr Sarah Harper, Professor of Gerontology and Senior Research Fellow Nuffield College. a world leader in planning for the new demographic of ageing people. She attributes the new demographic to a

She talks of challenges and opportunities. The practicalities of technology will support independent living through home aids. In terms of mature-age employment she cited a particular car manufacturer where robots released older workers from manual labour and increased
their working life through the provision of physically easier computer generated design work. Dr Bradley Willcox is a physician-investigator in geriatrics and gerontology and the man who told us about the health secrets of the long living Okinawa people. Along with a scientific team and his anthropologist twin brother, he examined the dietary habits of what is known as longest living people in the world. Sweet potatoes, he told me, played the biggest role in their diets, particularly purple ones, this along with jasmine tea and miso.

$1.1m in budget for vision-impaired MINISTER’S MESSAGE CORALEE O’ROURKE VISION Australia in Coorparoo will benefit from more than $1.1 million in funding, set to support people who are blind or have low vision to continue living independently in their communities. Disability Services Minister Coralee O’Rourke said the funding was part of a $1.7 billion allocation for disability services in this year’s State Budget,
which reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving the lives of people with disability. “Our government is proud to fund organisations like Vision Australia, to continue to provide much-needed services and supports to people who are blind or have low vision,” Mrs O’Rourke said. “This funding will help to provide accommodation support, learning and life skills support, therapy support, social outings, adaptive communication support, technology training, information library services, and
information referrals services. “It will also help to deliver education and training services, so clients can get ‘job-ready’ by learning new skills and improving their workplace knowledge. “Above all, this funding will help to develop creative solutions and tailored strategies to support clients to live as independently in their communities as they choose. “Supporting people with disability to recognise their goals and aspirations, whether it is to live independently or enter the workforce, is
particularly important as Queensland transitions to the National Disability Insurance Scheme.” Member for Greenslopes, Joe Kelly said Vision Australia in Greenslopes provided important and necessary support to help people who are blind or have low vision to develop the confidence and skills to get out and about safely and independently. “Vision Australia does amazing work, and is helping to change the lives of people who are blind or vision impaired,” Mr Kelly said. Seniors did warn pollies before voting IN DECIDING how they would vote on Saturday, health care and the economy were the key drivers for older Australians, according to a national survey by Australia's leading seniors advocate, COTA Australia. COTA CEO Ian Yates said a national survey of older Australians had made it clear all parties need to better address the five key areas of health, aged care, retirement incomes, employment, and housing in their election policies. "Thirty per cent of voters this election will be over 60 years of age, and half of those are over 70, which makes us an
increasingly powerful voice politically," Mr Yates said last week. "Our election panel of more than 1145 older Australians clearly voiced what is important to them and what needs to be done to make sure Australia is ready for the challenges and opportunities an aging population presents. "Overwhelmingly the three top election issues for older Australians are access to quality health care services (77%); having adequate pensions (62%) and access to good quality aged care (57%).” For more info, visit http://www.cota.org. au.

The QCWA parties on PARTIES are a time to celebrate but how do you create party food that zings and is healthy for your guests? The Mystery Box is the answer! Gold Coast residents enjoyed a culinary treat on June 24 when Queensland Country Women’s Association (QCWA) Mermaid Beach hosted the fifth Country Kitchens workshop in their rooms at Mermaid Beach. The Mystery Box was a three-hour, hands-on foodie session which tackled the dilemma of preparing party food – can canapes and cocktail foods be tasty and nutritious without being oily and high in saturated fat, sugar and salt? The stress-free recipes, demonstrated by a team of nutritionists, provided healthy alternatives. Fully qualified nutritionists, led by food expert Fiona McKenzie, travel with a mobile kitchen and teach local residents how to prepare quick and easy, highly nutritious home-cooked meals using more seasonal fruit and vegetables. www.qcwa.org.au/ countrykitchens or follow on facebook.

SNAPSHOTS OF LIFE ANN RICKARD ann.rickard@apn.com.au
OF ALL the things that creep up on us as we age – aching feet, creaking knees, deteriorating eyesight, you know them all – I never thought an increase in anxiety over very small matters would be one of them. But it is so. I fret now about missing planes, trains, buses and dental appointments. The last one bothers me not much, admittedly, but it is the awful anxiety over small issues I now experience when I travel. Where once I would book an airline ticket, throw it in the drawer, never look at it again until I got to the airport check-in counter, now I have to take it out of said drawer and check it half-a-dozen times a day leading up to my

departure. I fret in the car all the way to the airport that some detail on the ticket will be wrong and I won’t be allowed on the plane. Then I worry that my passport will somehow mysteriously disappear from the wallet I have secured it in and locked in my bag. (You never know, aliens could come down, filter through the car roof, get into my bag and take it.) (See? Real and stupid anxiety.) As for catching trains in foreign countries. Nightmare. As a middle-aged person I would skip lightly on a train, full of anticipation of an exciting journey looking out the window to happy cows in idyllic countryside; now I almost foam at the mouth with angst that I will be on the wrong train and heading in a direction quite opposite to the one in which I want to go. I make light of this, but it is very real, and I now know how people who suffer constant anxiety
feel. It’s a terrible and tangible thing and I don’t know what to do about it (apart from giving up travel, not negotiable.) I blame it all on my husband (why not? he cops it for everything else). He was refused embarkation on a flight recently because his ticket was in the name of Geoff and his passport was in the name of Geoffrey. I blame him again for the time he booked us on a flight out of Mykonos to Paris being all clever and doing it himself online in April for our flight in July. But instead of typing 28.7.15 into the computer, he typed 28.4.15. See? April. He was making the booking in April instead of July. So when we turned up for the flight on July 28, the check-in person looked at us, and said: “Hey, we were expecting you in April, you can’t get on this flight now, it’s July and it’s fully booked.

■ A worm farm ■ Compost worms – minimum 1000 (or 1000 x no. of people in your household) ■ Newspaper and a hessian sack ■ Food scraps ■ Compost (if building your own worm farm)
FIND A LOCATION
In summer, keep your worms in a cool, sheltered environment, away from direct sunlight. In the colder months, move them into a sunny area to keep them productive as temperatures drop. Where possible, place close to your kitchen so it’s convenient to maintain and add scraps.

THRIFTY AND THRIVING NICKY NORMAN
(near Putt Putt Golf) 6308997ab
The easiest way to get started is to buy a commercially made worm farm. These usually have two or three layers, all of which do different things.
In summer, keep your worms in a cool, sheltered environment, away from direct sunlight. HOW DO I GET STARTED?
Add your worms and cover them with five sheets of damp newspaper and a hessian sack or old t-shirt. Replace the worm farm lid and you’re ready to go.Once your middle layer is full to the brim, you can begin to use your top, or third, level. Start by placing food, covered with your hessian sack, in this level, and your worms will gradually move upwards to live and feed.
REMEMBER:
■ Worm farms process less food than a compost bin, so make sure you’re not overfeeding your worms. Uneaten food will begin to smell and attract unwanted pests. ■ Each day a worm will consume approximately it’s body weight in food. This means you can feed your worm farm a few handfuls every few days. Once it’s established and the worms are breeding, you can try feeding them more food. ■ Cut food into small pieces. Secrets to IF YOU’VE been wanting to make jam but haven’t known where to start, here’s your chance. Choose any fruit that’s ripe but still firm and try your own recipes, experiment with flavours, add a bit of whiskey to marmalade, cinnamon and vanilla bean paste to fig jam or rose-hip syrup to berry jam. When making jam, make sure you use all sugar in the recipe, this is needed to sweeten the jam and also as a setting agent. General rule of thumb, use a cup of sugar for every cup of chopped fruit. To set, jam needs the right balance of acid and pectin. High-acid fruits
CHEAP EATS, NO TRUFFLES CHRISTINE PERKIN include oranges, lemon, grapefruit, cherries, green apples, pineapple, raspberries and plums. If you’re using low-acid fruits, such as rhubarb, apricots, peaches and strawberries, you need to add lemon juice. A handy trick to help it set is to cook jam with a muslin bag full of pectin-rich lemon rind and seeds or you can buy pectin from most supermarkets.

best jam For best results, cook jam in small batches – this way the cooking time will be shorter and the fruit will retain its natural colour and flavour. I like to bottle in small jars about half a cup volume. Making jam at home is a simple process that requires few ingredients, but it is easy to get it wrong. A few simple rules to follow ■ 1. To set, jam needs pectin from the fruit and some varieties have more than others. For extra pectin, add a muslin pouch of lemon rind and seeds or store bought pectin available in your supermarket.
■ 2. Cook the fruit in a heavy-based pan until it’s soft but still holds its shape. This releases pectin and sets the jam. ■ 3. Skim foam from the surface as it cooks and to prevent burning, stir constantly for the last 10 minutes. ■ 4. Ladle the hot jam into clean, dry jars and invert for 2 minutes to seal. To store Jam ■ Wash jars and lids in hot, soapy water or dishwasher, then rinse and dry on a rack ■ Store jam in a cool, dark place away for up to six months. Once opened, store in the fridge for up to six weeks.
Seriously Fun Facts About Recycling ■ If by some miracle you could save one ton of paper you would be saving 682.5 gallons of oil, seven thousand gallons of water and 3.3 cubic yards of space in your local landfill. ■ The next time you pull that roll of toilet paper off the shelf bow your head and give thanks for the 27,000 trees that give their lives for you each day. ■ Think we’ve moved to a paperless society? Think again. Ninety-five per cent of the world’s information is still stored on physical paper never to be read or looked at again by anyone. ■ If you recycle a plastic bottle you will save enough energy to power a 60w light bulb for as long as six hours. ■ If you throw the bottle away as 2.5 million are thrown away each hour don’t worry – each one will decompose in 500 years. ■ In the ocean fish can’t tell the difference between plastic bags and jellyfish resulting in thousand of marine animal deaths. ■ Americans throw away enough soda cans and bottles to reach to the moon and back 20 times. ■ That recycled aluminium can could be

THE behavioural health community has long touted that gardening provides recreation and relaxation. NASA’s Human Research Program is looking at how caring for plants and flowers will help lessen feelings of isolation, loneliness and stress that can be a part of a long-duration mission in space. NASA astronaut Kjell Lindgren activated the growth of zinnia plants in November last year as part of an experiment in the Vegetable Production System, a facility that will help scientists learn how to grow fresh produce on orbit for the agency’s journey to Mars. NASA is using red, green, and blue LED lights 10 hours a day to stimulate growth of the plants. The countermeasure to sensory monotony is sensory stimulation. Working with plants provides astronauts visual, tactile and olfactory stimulation, and eventually even salivary stimulation with fresh foods and variety. “It was surprising to me how great soybean plants looked,” NASA astronaut
Peggy Whitson wrote while aboard the international Space Station. “I guess seeing something green for the first time in a month and a half had a real effect. I think it’s interesting that my reaction was as dramatic as it was,” she wrote. Another space gardener, NASA astronaut Don Pettit, conducted experiments with growing plants in space during Expedition 30/31 “I grew three plants on my last mission,” Pettit said. “Space zucchini, and then he had his buddy space broccoli. And then there was space sunflower.” To enhance his fun, he even wrote a blog from the point of view of space zucchini. Experiments involving space plants have been a favourite of astronauts, especially those staying in space for long periods of time. Several astronauts agree that the ability to watch plants grow, and to play a part in their growth, provides a strong connection to something bigger than their immediate surroundings.

there are Android alternatives that you can download through Google Play – Wunderlist, ToDo Cloud and Astrid) Step 2: Open the app Step 3: Click the little plus (+) symbol Step 4: Enter a task Step 5: Click the i (for info) symbol Step 6: Select “remind me on day” and put in the day and time you need reminding. It might take a little getting used to but if you have terrible short-term memory loss (like me) – it’ll soon become your best friend!

Pendant monitors wearer to detect falls and send assistance MORE than 35% of the population aged 65-years-plus will fall each year – that’s more than a million people, or 3000 a day. According to government figures, one in three over-65’s will fall each year in Australia, resulting in more than 1,500,000 hospital days spent on fall-related injuries. More than 70% of these falls happen in or around the home; nearly 20% result in head injury and 30% in hip/leg fractures. Of all the available
information, there is no clear indication of how long people remain “undiscovered” following a fall. Emergency Medical Services specialises in fall-detection systems and monitoring with safeTwear, the world’s smallest-smartest fall pendant, weighing only 34 grams and about the size of a matchbox, this remarkable technology not only detects a fall, it also connects directly to our 24-hour monitoring centre with two-way voice communication. Whether you are at home, in the garden, out
for a walk or at the shops, and slip, trip, fall or just push the panic button, you are connected directly with a monitoring specialist, talking with you directly through the pendant. Help is quickly on the way as the built-in GPS gives them your exact location. In the event that you are rendered unconscious, we have your full medical history on file to share with responders and ensure you get the correct help in the quickest possible time. Technology that is so smart yet so simple to
operate, each unit is programmed to suit the customer’s needs. All you need to know is, push the button in the case that you need medical help or, if you fall, the system will automatically detect this and help will be on the way. No more bulky base stations, limited voice distances, limits to in-home or connection to phone lines is needed. Live life, stay at home and out of care – call us today on 1300 699 159 to see if you qualify for our limited time free system offer.

SENIOR SERVICES Expos can be an interesting and informative means of gathering helpful information.
Thousands of seniors join fun at annual Gold Coast Expo THE Gold Coast Seniors Expo 2016 was another great success as almost 3000 mature-aged residents seized the day and embraced their senior status. The reason for the
popularity of this annual event was obvious with wide range of quality products, services and good advice available. One service, AdvocacyVision, was typical of the informative
stallholders. The individual advocacy service assists people who are blind, have low vision, or are deafblind (or their families) to address barriers they are facing as individuals in the
community. Other free information included retirement living options, in home care, seniors travel, seniors insurance, financial planners, investment advice, free hearing and
eyesight checks, and mobility aids. Information from Centre Link, the City of Gold Coast and much more. Stallholder line-ups include travel agents specialising in travel for seniors, reputable funeral
services and much more. For more Coast Expo information and stallholder advice contact event organiser, Warren Elwell, on warren.elwell@bigpond. com or 0409 277 430.

Seniors Expo First female Toastmaster
GOLD COAST resident 75-year-old Rivella Lewis was both a stall holder and interested audience member at the Gold Coast Seniors Expo. A talented artist and art teacher, Rivella was happy to share her story with Seniors Newspaper. She said her talent was recognised when, at 13-years-old, she was offered a job at Disney Studios but her dad, “being a staunch Jewish father,” wouldn’t let her go. Despite his resistance, she managed to follow her own artistic path, including success as an art teacher. She said that most of her students who entered
art competitions were winners. She also excelled in another area. In 1972 Rivella went to a Jewish Toastmasters event as a guest and was asked one of the table topic questions which required her to give a mini speech. Following that event, she became the first ever female member of Toastmasters International and is now a distinguished Toastmaster. Riverlla said Toastmasters has brought out her artistic talents in a way she never thought possible. “Because before that I was a mouse, I was a yes
dear, no dear person,” she said. Once women were allowed in 1973, her club told world headquarters and owned up to the fact that she was a female ‘Val’. By 1975 Rivella become the second ever Australian female area governor. She served a two-years consecutive term in Sydney’s Area 201 from July 1975 until June 1977. Following that term in office, she was then elected to the District 70 Executive as the new clubs officer, a special position created for her because she had doubled the amount of clubs in her area while area governor.

Positive ageing ethos ALMOST 3000 attendees walked through the doors and into the Gold Coast Seniors Expo in June. Many of the crowd were regulars at the annual event that provides an enormous range of senior-focused products and services. If you ever wondered what was on the market to make ageing a little easier, then you hit the jackpot at this event. As the mature-age demographic has grown, so have supporting industries and services and a great deal of them were happy to stake their place and talk to the crowd early last Wednesday. From Seniors Pet Support program to The Office of Fair Trading, Community Transport, Volunteering for Entertainers, Meal Plans and Travel, local people had their chance to get in

touch with all forms of practical assistance. There was also plenty of colour and entertainment at the event, where veteran newsreader Bruce Paige acted as the MC. Delightfully dressed in an Hawaiian shirt and dashing top hat, Mr Paige engaged the crowds, encouraged the magician and his tricks, and with consummate skill and enthusiasm kept the show on the road Mr Paige welcomed a number of speakers onto the stage, including
Seniors Newspaper Network editor Gail Forrer. Gail spoke about the publication’s positive outlook on the present and future, with an emphasis on embracing ageing. “That’s what our paper is all about,” she said. “Being really positive and giving some good news.” Quoting words from Ita Buttrose on ageing, she said she agreed with comments made by the doyenne of media and printed on the front page of Seniors Newspapers’s June edition. “We’re lucky to get old and I hope you can say we’re lucky to have a really good paper like the Seniors Newspaper.” Gail went on to say that the expo provided a great opportunity to speak with readers and advertisers. “Everyone has a story,” she said.

SLEEP quality is more important than sleep time. Sounds like a bold statement. But it’s general knowledge that the three main keys to staying in shape are: correct diet, exercise and sleep. Sleep is often overlooked as a priority in our busy lives and it is that vital to our overall wellbeing that many of us suffer without being aware. By design, we spend one-third of our life in bed. More time than we spend in our car and the environment we sleep in will have a direct impact on our body’s ability to heal and regenerate. People suffering with

Government- funded schemes provide funding for mobility aids and equipment to enable the aged population to grow old comfortably at home, avoiding early hospitalisation or residential care. HEALTHY FINANCE -- get expert advice and make an expert decision
Low rates for long haul WE NOW live in a global economic environment with zero or negative interest rates in substantial parts of the developed world. This is a result of events that have unfolded over a 30-year period and, if we look to the past, we might see a repeating theme. The results of the prolonged period of interest rates trending down has been a series of investment booms and busts, from the Japanese property bubble of the late-1980s through the “Asian Tigers” (and Asian crisis) of the 1990s, the tech bubble (and burst) in the 2000s, followed by the US (and other)
Check if this is the time to review your long-term investments housing booms (and GFC), China’s construction boom (a direct response to the GFC’s impact on its export industries) and the spill-over to resources (which is now fading), to the biotech bubble of the last two years. In Australia we are currently witnessing an ever-surging number of new apartments being built across our capital cities as part of an overall home-building program, which on a per capita view equals China’s 12.5 million starts. With high levels of indebtedness after such growth, the system is more sensitive to interest rate increases. There is also significant excess
capacity in all the areas that saw over-investment (eg mining), which reduces the need for further activity. While some think that low rates would encourage consumption, the reality is that low rates are leading people to save more for longer to meet their financial goals. Inflation has been low for almost three decades. The key drivers underlying the current low inflation are: the opening up of trade with developing economies that has provided and will continue to provide an enlarged pool of labour; advancements in technology, particularly in terms of its impact on
efficiency across a wide range of industries (think Uber, Airbnb, for example), have had and will continue to have a deflationary effect; and governments have been more disciplined with fiscal spending in recent years. This kind of low-yield low-inflation environment is not without precedent. Jonathan Wilmot from Credit Suisse has produced some quality analysis on the two historical periods that most closely resemble the post-GFC era: the global recession in the 1890s and the Great Depression of the 1930s. The key lesson from these earlier episodes is that interest rates stayed
Try to be debt-free in retirement THINK MONEY PAUL CLITHEROE I’M A big fan of entering retirement with as little debt as possible but surprising numbers of Australians are still carrying large sums of debt even when they’re close to, or in, retirement. An AMP/NATSEM report from late-2015 found 78.3% of 50 to 65-year-olds still have household debt, while 44.1% of over-65s face a debt burden. And we’re not talking nickel and
dime sums either. The average debt among 50-65s is $68,500 but, at the top end of the scale, one in 10 of these households owes $534,300. To put these figures in perspective, super industry body ASFA says men currently retire with an average of $292,500 in super, a figure that falls to $138,150 for women. With this level of super savings, ASFA notes the majority of recent retirees will need to substantially rely on the age pension. Using your super to pay out personal debt – especially big-ticket debt like a home loan, means losing a solid chunk of
your nest egg in one hit, further increasing the likelihood of turning to the pension for income support. One alternative is to remain in the workforce for longer. Sure, this is a chance to grow your super, and pay down debt. But there are no guarantees about when you will retire. This is why it’s so important to knuckle down and pay off a mortgage or credit cards, particularly as you begin the approach to retirement. Take a look at the ‘Super versus Mortgage’ calculator on the government’s Money Smart website. It can provide an idea of which

option will leave you better off. As a general rule though, making a concerted effort to enter retirement debt-free provides plenty of pluses. If you think about those potential repayments that could be accumulating in your own pocket instead of being funneled off to the bank, you get a better mental picture of the benefits of enjoying a debt-free retirement. low for 25 years from the start of the crisis. While economic systems have changed in significant ways since then, a similar pattern across the three periods can be observed in many metrics. With a potential long-term interest rate environment ahead, it could be a good time to review that your investment strategy is suited to current times. AIR opens doors to a network in retirement RETIREMENT can be intimidating. After spending 40-plus years in the workforce, you’re probably at the top of your game – having risen to a level of responsibility where colleagues seek your advice. Over the decades your income will have increased, allowing you to indulge in personal interests while also supporting those near and dear. Then all of a sudden, your world tilts on its axis. Friday afternoon sees the grand farewell party . Sincere promises to “keep in touch” resonate from the crowd as you walk away; a pathway
unfamiliar and unknown. And then what? Back in 1990 a group of people formed the Association of Independent Retirees (AIR) in order to support this very need. It’s still going strong with more than 5000 members nationally. Importantly, AIR opens doors to a broad-ranging network of other retirement groups and clubs while offering socialising for its members at an intelligent level. So, if you feel cut off from conversations of substance and the sharing of knowledge at peer-to-peer level, why not come along.

Lugano: Love at first sight Ann Rickard
IF THERE is one region in Europe that makes you go weak at the knees with longing it has to be Lugano, on the border of Switzerland and Italy. Actually there are several European destinations that can cause shaky knees but it is the combination of regal mountains and placid lakes, melded with Swiss precision and the Italian zest for life, that makes Lugano so alluring. Then there is the thought of George Clooney having a villa down the road in Italy. Lugano is in southern Switzerland in the canton of Ticino where the people speak Italian, the weather is balmy and the ambience is Mediterranean. Lugano is an important financial centre but you won’t be concerned with business matters when you are surrounded by green parks, Mediterranean squares, galleries, museums, lakeside
boulevards, high-end restaurants and too many events and festivals to choose from. Such a beautiful destination calls for a special hotel with a Lake Lugano view, and they don’t come any better than the Villa Principe Leopoldo. Just driving into the hotel’s circular driveway to look up at the stately historic building gives you a sense of importance. The lake and mountain views from this beautiful building are astounding. You will not want to leave to go down to the town even though much awaits you there. This is a destination hotel, where your room or suite is exquisitely and tastefully furnished and your bathroom is full-marble glamour. Everything about the property speaks of money – lots of it. All spent to achieve the utmost in elegance and style. The villa was home to Prince Federico Leopoldo until his
death in 1931. It was built at the end of the 19th century for the family’s summer residence and half of Europe’s nobility have been guests. You are in good company there. It was transformed into a hotel in 1986. Dining is an important component of a Villa Principe Leopoldo visit. In summer the dining is outside beneath a marquee overlooking the vast and enigmatic lake. The menu and wine list reflect the sophistication, and the chef may present you with many courses including goose liver confit, poached sole in green pea and wasabi broth, and perhaps some local cheese and then a sweet finish of parfait scented with elderflower syrup. As the sun goes down and the lights on the mountain across the lake begin to glow and shimmer you’ll be a very content person. *The writer was a guest of Tourism Switzerland.

A walking tour of
Discover the city on foot Erle Levey
ADELAIDE ... it has been so long. It will be good to see you again, see how you’ve changed. After all, it’s been almost 40 years. A lot can happen in that time. Thoughts of the gracious city play with me as the plane descends. While I have been to the City of Light three or four times before this is the first by air. Direct from Brisbane. The first was a surfing trip. Then there was a basketball club end-of-season trip by bus. There was a brief stop-over at Pt Adelaide while on a ship voyage to the UK and years later the city was a stepping-off point before crossing the Nullarbor on a road trip to Western Australia. The aging grandeur of the Grand Hotel at Glenelg Pier, the Torrens River and the sedate Adelaide Oval with the Victor Richardson Gates, a tribute to an all-round sportsman. And
Blackberry and white chocolate domes.
of course there was the wine-growing areas of the Barossa and the Clare Valley. Indelible memories of a well laid-out city nestled between a long, low mountain range and the gentle waters of St Vincent’s Gulf. A place of churches and wide open spaces, of bluestone cottages and gracious mansions, of beer glasses they called butchers and pie-floaters served from a caravan at night in the city square.
The trip along Sir Donald Bradman Drive from the airport into the city is now a beautiful tree-lined roadway whereas my recollections of it is so different. That road was ugly, lined with the iconic and hideously deathly “stobie pole”. Reinforced concrete is sandwiched between steel beams, then solidly embedded in a foundation alongside the kerb which edges busy roads. But just like a baby girl,

Adelaide
Adelaide has matured in those intervening years. She’s more attractive, interesting, displays many facets and is worldly. An eclectic mix of traditional and contemporary life, the conservative and the quirky. The housing looks similar to then although when you peek past the old facades many surprises await. There is nothing quite like an early morning walk around the streets to discover what a place is really like. The houses of bluestone and brick, one-way streets that reverse in the morning and evening to deal with the traffic. Faded signs painted on building walls advertising everything and anything from shoe polish to brewer’s yeast. Around the corner is a pop art mural of a futuristic look. You meet people out walking their dogs, see delivery vans squeezing along alley ways. Then you stumble across the Adelaide Central Markets, opening for the day’s

trading. The markets have a real mix of cultures and are open every day except Sunday and Monday. It’s arguably the best in Australia for not just fruit and veg but bread and pastries, cakes and cheeses, fish, meat and poultry, smallgoods, nuts and chocolate. There are cafes and stalls for breakfast, brunch or lunch, cooking demonstrations and live music events. Even in-depth educational foodie tours so you can enjoy a real
taste of all the goodies on offer. Enjoy a slow wander taking in the sights and sounds as you watch the market come to life. The key to Adelaide being such a walkable city is that the central block is set out on a grid system that is one mile (1.6km) square with parklands all around it. Victoria Square is at its heart and there are four quadrant squares. The lay-out is fed by four principal roads that are two-chain wide – that’s equivalent to two cricket
pitches or wide enough to turn a bullock team. Adelaide is where you have everything from evening wine tastings and tapas at bars and cafes off malls and places to fine restaurants, pizza parlours, pubs and nightclubs. This visit brings so many memories flooding back, while laying down new one. . It reminds you that travelling to places of the past are worthwhile ... almost like all that’s old is new again.

Zeil’s the real deal The world-class shopping in Germany is just too tempting Ann Rickard
SOME travel writers like to do extensive research before they embark on a trip. They like to know as many details as possible about their destination before they go. Others would rather take the capricious “let-me-seewhen-I-get- there’’ approach. I fall in between. I like to know a little about where I am going, but too much. So it was that I found myself enchanted to stumble across Germany’s premier shopping street in Frankfurt. The Zeil just happened to be around the corner from my hotel (I was beautifully ignorant of this) and when I casually asked the concierge if there was any decent shopping nearby, he just pointed me around the corner. He didn’t make mention of the Zeil being a wide and lovely pedestrianised street with graceful sycamore trees
and wondrous shops. See? Nice surprises await the unenlightened traveller. When you stumble on something great, you feel proprietorial towards it. The Zeil was my discovery. “You have just been through a cold winter and left the house in your normal gear without realising it was going to turn out a warm spring day,” I thought to myself as I passed all the luxury shops, itching to go into Louis Vuitton but refraining for fear of upsetting myself by looking at all those gorgeous products I couldn’t afford. As is the case in most European countries, the shops were overheated, so all those people were entering the large department stores and pulling off hats, removing scarves and turning rosy with the heat. There is no Sunday shopping in Germany and this vibrant street that had been packed with happy

shoppers and drinkers and sausage-eaters the day before, was deserted, desolate, as empty as a ghost town. I had dragged my husband there telling him what a flamboyant street it was only to find not a soul out with all the doors firmly closed. So, Saturday is your go in Frankfurt.
Saturday shopping in Frankfurt is very festive.
P&O sails into PNG P&O Cruises’ Pacific Jewel made history this month, becoming the first cruise ship to call at one of the most remote island groups in the world – the Conflict Islands in Papua New Guinea. The uninhabited islands became P&O’s latest cruise destination – and eighth port in Papua New Guinea – when the 2000-guest ship anchored off Panasesa Island last Tuesday. A picturesque group of 21 islands surrounding a bright blue lagoon, the Conflict Islands are home to one of the world’s most biodiverse reef systems. During their visit, guests made the most of the island paradise taking part in kayaking, snorkelling and stand-up paddleboarding as well as glass bottom boat and outrigger canoe tours. The only cruise line offering calls to the untouched Conflict Islands, P&O has added the destination to 11 of its Papua New Guinea itineraries in 2016. CHAD Morgan is the last of the country music legends. He has out-sung, out-drunk and outlived his famous contemporaries. When Slim Dusty died in 2003, the heavy title of country music’s “national treasure” was passed on to Chad. Chad hasn’t had a drink or a smoke for over 30 years and now past 80-years old, is still one of the funniest men on the planet. A one-of-kind entertainer who can captivate an audience
with a story, a joke or just a facial expression and some of the most original, funny songs ever performed. A living legend of Australia’s entertainment industry and a true gentleman of country music, Chad is a country music pioneer who has played all over Australia, with fans from grandparents to grandchildren. This is the first time in 20 years he has brought his full show to the Gold Coast and has teamed up with husband and wife team Glennys and Ian Muir.
Originally from the Goulburn Valley in Victoria, The Muirs are now based on the Gold Coast and have been writing songs and performing together for a number of years. The Muirs came to the attention of the legendary Chad Morgan at one of his shows, and have since been touring the country as his support act, performing at all the major festivals. Matinee performance on Saturday, July 23. Phone 5534 7999 or visit www.currumbinrsl. com.au.
Tribute to the one and only Patsy ALWAYS … Patsy Cline is more than a tribute to the legendary country singer who died tragically at age 30 in a plane crash in 1963. The show is based on a true story about Cline’s friendship with a fan from Houston named Louise Seger, who befriended the star in a Texas honky-tonk in 1961, and continued a correspondence with Cline until her death. The musical play, complete with down-home country humour and true emotion, includes 27 of Patsy’s unforgettable hits such as Crazy, I Fall to Pieces, Sweet Dreams and Walking After

The audience was swept away by the magic of a cappella in three concerts staged by two local choirs at Helensvale’s Cultural Centre Auditorium in June. Under the direction of Jan & Andrew Howson over fifty singers performed in an outstanding show. There were princes and princesses and loads of Disney Characters singing their hearts out. It was a feast for the eyes and ears for the young and old in the audience. Sound Connection is a male a cappella choir and holds the National Australian Barbershop Title as well the Queensland championship. Phone: David 0477 004 481 or email: info@sound connection.com.au Vocalescence is a female choir and national champions 2012 and 2013. More information on their website or on facebook. They are avvailable for bookings.
