WELCOME to our June edition. This month we spoke to the much-loved Maggie Beer whose attitude to life exudes all the qualities I see as belonging to our demographic, that is diverse, down-to-earth and informative, and she exudes them in bucket-loads.
In this story we focus on her mission to improve nursing home diets. This effort has far-reaching effects, we all feel better to know our closest family are getting the most nutritious food possible. Maggie also supports the work of Gold Coast dietician Cheri ... and you can read about her efforts on page 5. In this edition we present our first Live and Let’s Save feature. If you agree with the old saying a “Penny saved is a dollar earned” then I think you will find plenty of
penny savers in this list practical tips and hints, including the rewards that are often hidden behind our everyday transactions. Peter Beattie named as Games chief FORMER Premier of Queensland Peter Beattie now heads the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) Board as chairman. Mr Beattie, who served as Premier from 1998 to 2007, was joined on the GOLDOC Board in mid-May
by former editor-in-chief of Gold Coast Publications, Bob Gordon. The former premier also served as Queensland’s Trade Commissioner to North and South America based in Los Angeles from 2008 to 2010.His latest appointment to another plum job has raised
accusations of the Labor Party handing out “jobs for the boys”. “Whether you love me, or hate me, I absolutely love this state ... and I look forward to delivering the best Games ever,” Mr Beattie told reporters on the Gold Coast after the announcement was made.
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said both appointments would ensure the 2018 Commonwealth Games would maximise value for the Gold Coast and Queensland. To be held from April 4-15, 2018, the Games will attract 6600 athletes.

Reg makes a last marathon effort

I didn’t start running seriously until I was 57. he said. “The full marathon will be between six and seven thousand. “It’s a great day – that’s why I enjoy it so much.” Reg has had a good “run” in the sport he loves. “I kept a little diary of my training,” he said. “I have done more then 42,000km in the last 20 years. I’m quite happy to have run for 22 years.” The 38th annual Gold Coast Airport Marathon will be held on Saturday and Sunday, July 2 and 3. Its course runs next to the Gold Coast’s surf beaches and broadwater and has a reputation as one of the flattest and fastest courses in the world. The event received an International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Road Race Gold Label n 2014. There’s a race tailor-made for everyone, with events including the Gold Coast Airport Marathon, Wheelchair Marathon, ASICS Half Marathon, Wheelchair 15km, Southern Cross University 10km Run, Suncorp Bank 5.7km Challenge and Zespri Junior Dash (4km and 2km).

EIGHTY-year-old Reg Hogan, of Broadbeach, will put his considerable running experience to good use in next month’s Gold Coast Airport Marathon. He has been competing at this event since the 1990s, and will be using his course knowledge to help runners in the ASICS Half Marathon to reach a goal time as one of Pat Carroll’s “Online and Onland Pacers”. Pat Carroll is a four-time winner of the Gold Coast Airport Marathon and an event ambassador. His runners do their best to maintain an even pace throughout each race. This will be Reg’s last marathon run – he’s soon to have a knee replacement and his doctor is encouraging him to stick to cycling in the future. “I didn’t start running seriously until I was 57,” Reg said. “I’d always kept active and fit, played a few sports. I was a teacher and used to ride my bike to school. “When I did complete a marathon (42.2km), I thought I could do another one. “A couple of times I won my age category in the half-marathon and 10km races.” Reg will be one of an estimated 10,000 runners in the Gold Coast half marathon. “We all start together,”

Maggie’s vision for aged care

MAGGIE Beer has a recipe for keeping folk in aged care happy and contented – flavoursome, nutritious meals, served in pleasant surroundings. And Australia’s favourite chef is doing more than just talking about providing food with that touch of home cooking. She started her Maggie Beer Foundation – A Good Food Life for All – in May 2014 and it is now providing benchmark best practice in many of Australia’s aged care homes, transforming the way we look after our elderly and giving them a better quality of life. The 71-year-old entrepreneur will be in Brisbane next month to conduct cooking demonstrations at the Regional Flavours Festival on July 16-17 at South Bank and in an exclusive interview from her home in the Barossa Valley she told Seniors, “I will take
the chance to talk up the Foundation while I’m there”. Maggie’s first became interested in 2010 when she was named Senior Australian of the Year and asked to speak in Tasmania at a conference of aged care leaders.

I’ve had good food all my life and to me the greatest gift everyone should have is the gift of a life of good food. “I did my research into a lot of facilities and, while I saw some wonderful things, I also saw some terrible things at places where the quality of food didn’t count,” she said. “Everyone has the right to a good meal every day. “I’ve had good food all
my life and to me the greatest gift everyone should have is the gift of a life of good food. “It’s not just sustenance, it’s pleasure.” She described how she approached the then Federal Government with the idea that they find the best aged care exponents across Australia and see what they were doing to de-institutionalise food. “There was a lot of interest but no money. I knew I had to do something so I started the Foundation. “So far we’ve managed to get a TAFE course with eight different components of specific instruction in aged care and two masterclasses each giving grants for 30 cooks and chefs in aged care facilities. “We bring in the experts and the chefs then go back to their homes where they are looking after 50-300 people and so it becomes a movement.”

A happy meal is shared with family and friends MAGGIE Beer’s vision of the ideal aged care facility, large or small, country or city, is one that not only feels like home but needs to be the home of the person who is in it. “I see it as bringing people around the table
enjoying a lovely outlook, conversation and a really good meal,” she said. “Pleasure, nutrition, conversation, all the things that should be there.” She is also a proponent of kitchen gardens. “It’s important to have
food for the kitchen as well as activities like gardening for residents to allow them to do the things they are used to doing.” Food author, television chef, restaurateur, and food manufacturer Maggie said she has to
compartmentalise her business life to have the Foundation “make the biggest impact in the shortest possible time”. “When I was young I was never told I couldn’t do something,” she said. “I was never given any constraints and so I never
accepted any. “I still believe that because the one thing I’ve always had going for me is that I’m a lateral thinker. “I always see a way to do something better. “I am, however, very aware that the people who work so hard in the very
complex area of aged care should not to be diminished in any way. “There are very few organisations who don’t want to do better and if we can give them the tools and share work information and ideas then that’s wonderful.”

Gold Coast studies have found that more than half of aged care residents are malnourished – a figure borne out at a national level. Two years ago, when The Lantern Project was launched, that figure was up to 80%. THE activities of the Variety Plus entertainment group have graced the pages of the Seniors Newspaper over the years. The Gold Coast-based seniors’ entertainment group with five performers was featured in our June 2001 edition, right at the start of the Gold Coast/Tweed Seniors Newspaper. ENDURING POWERS OF ATTORNEY – EVERYBODY SHOULD HAVE ONE!

If anyone has tried to change account details for their telephone, electricity, Foxtel or any other common service provider on behalf of a friend or relative, you will have experienced the icy response of “I’m sorry we cannot discuss that account with you because of privacy laws”.
CURRUMBIN RSL Memorial Club is on the hunt for memorabilia to be displayed in a “pop-up” museum commemorating the 50-year anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in August. A grant from the Commonwealth Government’s Saluting Their Service Commemorations Program (Vietnam War) will help create the display. The club’s marketing and communications manager Laura Prout said Vietnam Veteran Sub Branch Board members would assist. “We are now putting a call out for anyone who can lend any memorabilia – uniforms, weapons, artefacts – for inclusion in the museum,” Laura said. “The pop up museum will also have a photographic exhibition of photos taken by Vietnam veteran Richard McLaren, who uses photography as a form of therapy to cope with PTSD.
We have all had this situation occur, even when it is an electricity account that you have had as a couple for more than 20 years. We had a recent example where a couple had lived at the same address for 30 years with the same electricity provider and when the husband had a stroke and went into care, the electricity company refused to deal with his wife of 30 years purely because the electricity account had been taken out in his name prior to them being married. You can imagine the ongoing problems that family members face when their parent, spouse or child is unable to conduct their own affairs due to loss of capacity caused by illness or injury. It is a very frustrating experience and usually in the middle of the stress and anxiety of having to deal with the sudden onset of illness or injury to your family member. Whilst it is also wise to have your Will in place to cover the ultimate contingency of death, in these times of modern medicine and accessible medical treatment, it is more likely that, statistically, you will survive a significant illness or injury but the downside of this is that you could be left with a lack of full mental capacity (or loss of speech and/or use of your limbs etc.). It is therefore probably more appropriate to hold an Enduring Power of Attorney so that your appointed attorneys can manage your financial and health affairs in the event that you are unable to attend to these matters yourself. What is an Enduring Power of Attorney? Many people confuse a Power of Attorney with being an executor in a Will. A Power of Attorney is a document that appoints someone or more than one person to basically sign any documents and attend to any financial or legal matters on your behalf as if they were you. Although you can impose any restrictions and/or conditions in relation to the Power of Attorney, the most common form of Enduring Power of Attorney that people sign is basically an unlimited attorney which has immediate effect. This means that as soon as you sign an Enduring Power of Attorney in favour of someone, they could basically walk straight down to the bank and withdraw all of your funds from your accounts! Some Powers of Attorney do not come into effect until such time as the person making the Power of Attorney has lost mental capacity (to be certified by a medical practitioner). This can cause problems due to disputes concerning whether the person has in fact lost mental capacity to satisfy the precondition of the Enduring Power of Attorney coming into effect. Most people who suffer from Alzheimers or dementia do not realise that they are losing their capacity and can be very stubborn in relation to agreeing that someone else should attend to the handling of their financial affairs and/or their medical treatment and living conditions (e.g. putting someone into a nursing home or a care facility). Many people think that it is an easy exercise to download the appropriate Government form from the website, fill it out and attend upon a Justice of the Peace in a shopping centre in order to sign the document. This is a dangerous exercise and is similar to filling out a do it yourself Will kit. Many people do not realise the true power of an Enduring Power of Attorney and the dangers that can flow from appointing one person to be immediately in charge of all of their financial affairs. Unfortunately we have many cases of sole attorneys being appointed who are trusted family members and who subsequently abuse that trust and use the funds for their own purposes. Anyone considering completing an Enduring Power of Attorney should carefully consider who they are going to appoint as their attorneys and take the following into consideration:Be careful about who you appoint as your attorneys. It is unwise to appoint one person to be the sole person in charge of your affairs. It is better to appoint joint attorneys and ensure that they must operate together. Try not to appoint two people who might collude or work together to defraud your assets. Try to make sure that you have two independent people who can keep an eye on each other;

Make sure that you make provision for reserve attorneys to be appointed in the event that your appointed attorneys either die before you, lose capacity themselves or are unable to fulfil their duties as an attorney (e.g. if they are unable to be found, are bankrupt or in jail);
3.
Make sure that you carefully consider the terms and conditions of the Enduring Power of Attorney. For example, you may wish to ensure that it does not come into operation until after you have lost capacity.You should also make sure that you make provision for any special circumstances that exist (e.g. making provision for certain family members and/or gifts to children etc.);
4.
You should carefully consider the dynamics of your family and the attorneys that you are appointing. It is no use appointing a brother and sister as joint attorneys if they do not get on with each other and will argue over decision making issues. By the same token, try not to leave out relatives from your appointed attorneys. If you have 3 children it is wise to appoint the 3 of them jointly or at least a majority of 2 out of the 3 in order to keep the peace amongst your family members. If there are irreconcilable differences amongst your preferred family members, you should consider appointing independent professionals as your attorneys;
5.
Appoint someone who has the time and is smart enough to handle your affairs. It’s no use appointing who is unfamiliar with business matters as an attorney or someone who is not very good with paperwork and dealing with authorities and companies. The role as an attorney can be very time consuming and demanding – make sure your chosen attorneys are up to the job at hand;

Many people who do not have relatives they can trust appoint their lawyers and/or their accountants to handle their affairs in the event that they lose capacity. There will be legal and accounting fees associated with this exercise but sometimes this is preferable than having someone misappropriating your funds or not looking after your affairs properly. At least professionals have compulsory indemnity insurance, fidelity cover for their trust account, and are regularly audited by authorities.

These are just some of the issues that you need to take into account when you are thinking of making a valid and appropriate Enduring Power of Attorney. You should seek proper legal advice in relation to the terms and conditions of the Enduring Power of Attorney and carefully take into account your overall family situation and your assets.You should also be careful to take into account any companies, trusts or business entities that you control as any loss of capacity will also affect your ability to continue with these entities.

Captured documents and information from prisoners suggested that D Company had faced some 2500 Viet Cong. In New South Wales, there are different laws applicable and there are separate documents for financial and property matters (Enduring Power of Attorney) and an Enduring Guardian for health and lifestyle issues. It is advisable to ensure that you are covered in relation to these issues, no matter what your age or circumstances are. Your circumstances can change literally in a heartbeat and the consequences of not having an Enduring Power of Attorney in place are that your family members could be put to the cost and stress of applying to QCAT or NCAT for Orders that they be appointed as the attorney and/or financial manager of the person who has lost mental capacity. These applications take precious time and are not always granted in favour of the person applying for the Orders. Once again, you do not want to be in a position of having to make formal applications to a Tribunal in circumstances where your beloved family member is in urgent need of assistance.

MUSICAL duo Greg Barnett and Martin Hale would like to report that their self-produced album has made the charts and that fans are camping outside their door... but maybe not yet. “As most musicians would relate, it’s next to impossible to earn a buck from recordings, and get heard unless you perform,” Greg said. “There’s just too much music around, and everyone wants it for free. “We do not perform, and we didn’t hire a studio – everything was done at home, each in our own study. Instead of hiring a ‘studio’, we each have a ‘study-o’.” The enterprising duo learned the recording process from articles and YouTube videos. In December last year, they released a 12-track album titled Prescient, doing the writing, performing, vocals, recording, production, mastering, artwork and videos themselves. They weren’t in the

HUNDREDS of possums have wildlife carer Robyn Cox to thank for their survival. In the 12 years Robyn has volunteered with Wildcare Australia on the Gold Coast, she has rescued and cared for about 700 possums. It’s not a job for the faint-hearted, she stresses, with three-hourly feeds the norm for up to eight weeks when caring for the cute young possums.
“It is a huge commitment,” Robyn said. “I go out anytime, all over the Gold Coast, and do a rescue.” The group is always looking for volunteers, not only to care for animals, but also a whole range of other tasks. THE Federal Government’s Objective of the Superannuation System paper calls for comment. The Association of Independent Retirees (AIR) said the system needs to embrace certainty and support the maintenance and protection of income producing assets needed over the many years in retirement to produce a self-sustaining and equitable retirement income. “AIR fully supports the government in seeking a broad political and community agreement to enshrine in legislation the Objective of Superannuation,” AIR Queensland Division president Bernie Treston said. “It is critical that this objective reflects the position for those who now, and in the future, will self-fund their retirement and that it clearly reflects the need for improved and increased self-sufficiency in retirement. “AIR members are
seeking a reassurance that the impact on those who will be most affected by any change to the operation of the superannuation system (i.e. those who now self-fund their retirement or have planned to do so on the basis of current understandings) are specifically considered in the determination of this important objective.” AIR proposes the adoption of the following definition: “To enable Australians to have a sustainable and self-managed income stream in retirement that will adequately support a comfortable and active retirement lifestyle”. Bernie emphasises that key considerations in framing the objective should be self-sufficiency and the need for self-managing assets and investment strategies to generate the retirement income stream. This may be done via self-managed superannuation or by using an industry or retail
superannuation fund but with no government involvement in specifying the detailed management of an individual’s assets and investments. Government does, however, need to strongly manage on behalf of consumers the activities, risks and fees charged by industry or retail superannuation funds. A strong set of rules needs to be developed to underpin the objective and operation of the superannuation system. SENIORS Minister Coralee O’Rourke said the campaign ‘There’s no excuse for elder abuse’ was launched to create awareness around this unacceptable behaviour and ways it could be addressed. “Sadly, older people can be vulnerable to abuse, with more than 1350 new elder abuse notifications in Queensland in 2015 – up from around 1280 in the previous year,” Mrs O’Rourke said. “That is why we have stepped up the fight against elder abuse and are encouraging family members, friends, neighbours and

The National Aged Care Alliance comprises 48 peak body organisations representing consumers and their families, informal carers, special needs groups, nursing, allied health and personal carers involved in the aged care sector, and private and not-for-profit aged care providers. UPCYCLING is a fun and innovative way to reuse materials and reduce your carbon footprint. The beauty of upcycling is saving - saving dollars, saving waste and ultimately saving the planet. We all talk about making the world a better place - well here is one way we can make a personal contribution. Take your time, plan the project and perhaps you can join up with neighbours, friends or family to complete the job. Upcycling can work well as a group project as the old saying goes: “The more the merrier.” Through clever repurposing or giving an unused or possibly discarded item a second life and new function, we are helping to save the world’s resources and keeping down the landfill. ■ UPCYCLING is the opposite of downcycling, which is the other half of the recycling process. ■ DOWNCYLING involves converting materials and products into new materials of lesser quality, upcycling adds quality. ■ LOOK around your home or garage for some inspiration, starting small to begin with. A common household item such as a glass jar is perfect.
■ BE sure to save your empty food jars for future projects. Give you jar a good clean and get your supplies ready. ■ GET creative and think of how your item could be improved and more practical. There are many ideas to give your glass jar a new lease on life. ■ PAINT or decorate your jar with a ribbon and add some fresh flowers for a vase. ■ ADD a tea light candle in the base for a simple lantern effect. ■ MELT some soy wax and add a wick and a little essential oil for a scented candle. ■ MAKE some jams or chutney and give to family or friends (keep for some special festive occasions.) ■ KEEP leftover coffee grinds until you have enough for a homemade skin exfoliate. ■ ADD an old soap dispenser pump to a lid by screwing a hole in it and securing with adhesive glue, creating your own soap or moisturiser dispenser. ■ MOST items to get your project started should be on hand. Take a look around and find your unused paint, ribbon, string, glue. For larger projects you may require: a hammer, nails, drill, and old timber. Some items like an old timber crate or pallet can be transformed into a coffee table, bench sit or vertical garden. ■ BE inspired, repurpose and reuse. Happy Upcycling!

ONE of our lovely Seniors Newspaper readers emailed me suggesting I write a column about the conspiracy to kill off us seniors by slow starvation. While most of us enjoy a conspiracy theory, this one might be a bit much. And while I can’t really believe our manufacturers and producers are out to kill us oldies, it’s worth giving the theory an airing. It is death by the inability to open a bottle top, unscrew a lid or operate a can opener. This one has crept up on me over the years. Where once I had no trouble with my big hands and strong wrists to wrench the top off a jar of pickled onions and dive in,
now I need to cry for help to achieve this small task. Any jar now poses an insurmountable problem for me. From the raspberry jam jar to the chutney jar to the humble peanut butter jar, I am defeated by them all. “Buy one of those super gadgets especially made for silly old people who can’t open jars,” I can hear you say. I already have one. In a fancy red colour. It looks like an old-fashioned bottle opener but it is all modern moulded plastic stuff. You put it on top of the jar lid, press down until you hear a pop noise and then the lid should come off easily. Not so. At least not for me. Whenever I am confronted with a jar lid, I do give it a go first, and then raise my head to the heavens and shout: “Why is everything so difficult?” Fortunately I live with someone who has bigger
hands, stronger wrists and more patience than me. But for those who live alone it is a question of going into the neighbours with your jar of gherkins or going without. It is the same with can openers. Thankfully most cans now come with a ring pull and even I with my weak old hands can manage that, but the ring-pull-less can that requires a can opener, forget it. My feeble and almost arthritic hands can no longer turn a can opener. Cans and jars and lids are now my enemy. But here’s the puzzling thing... no matter how difficult I find a jar, lid or can to open, I have never once been unable to get the cap off a wine bottle. They come off with just a delicate twist. A champagne cork poses no problem either. I can’t explain this phenomenon, but I don’t question it.

Never Alone Friendship members were made very welcome when they visited the Gold Coast & Hinterland Historical Society recently. After walking around the gardens and taking in the variety of items from the history of the Gold Coast, they were treated to a wonderful morning tea and a talk on the history of the site and items of historical significance. Keys to happy retirement INSPIRING AND RETIRING EVA BENNETT EVEN when financially prepared for retirement, many people are unprepared for the psychological and social changes that occur. Here are some tips for retaining a sense of purpose and pleasure in life after work, especially as we are living 20-30 years longer than people did 100 years ago. They say 70 is the new 50. I like that! 1. Make a bucket list: This helps to give you a sense of purpose and a reason to get up every morning. It is never too late to start a bucket list but, the earlier you start one, the better. Studies have shown that less than 40% of people retire when they planned to. I have found, time and time again, that the
people who had a bucket list of a variety of interests while they were still working transitioned into retirement more smoothly than those who didn’t have one. 2. Use your money wisely: When you know what you want in this new stage of your life, your financial planning will be more effective, especially as we are living longer. One thing I have learnt, both through other people’s stories and my own experiences, is that as we get older, using our money for experiences rather than material things becomes more meaningful and adds to our quality of life. Ask yourself – do you want to be rich or live a rich life? What is more important – health or wealth? 3. Keep your mind fit: Just because we stop working, doesn’t mean we need to stop learning. We don’t “lose our marbles” because we are getting older, especially if we keep using our brain.
A wonderful provider of learning opportunities for seniors is U3A – University of the Third Age. 4. Keep your body fit: To slow down the ageing process and keep you healthy, one of the best physical activities you can do is take a daily walk, unless it’s pouring rain. A 30-40 minute walk in the fresh air keeps the body parts moving, clears the head and can prevent dementia. 5. Have fun: Our social health is as vital as our physical and mental health. This fifth secret is the icing on the cake. When we join groups, meet new people and share interests – it is easy to have fun. We are much less likely to get depressed and life in retirement becomes something to enjoy, rather than dread. It addresses the real issues associated with dementia shedders need to know how to handle these issues in a sensitive and supportive way so the shed can continue to have a positive influence. Alzheimer’s Australia NSW and the Australian Men’s Shed Association have collaborated to launch the free guide. The resource has tools to help members of men’s sheds support and communicate with men with dementia and carers, so that the shed can continue to have a positive influence on their lives. One of the great problems of dementia is the social isolation it causes. Social inclusion and shared experiences with open and accepting
colleagues and friends are essential to a happy life. More so if that life involves dementia. That is why this initiative involving Men’s Sheds and dementia is so welcome. The manual includes: ■ A summary of what dementia is, how to recognise it and simple ways to support men with dementia. There are also tips on communication and supporting carers ■ Tools for men who are interested in joining a shed and have been diagnosed with dementia ■ Tools for keeping your brain healthy and active ■ Tools for helping the shed leadership teams to make the best decisions for all concerned This manual is based on information from Alzheimer’s Australia NSW’s “Every Bloke Needs a Shed” pilot project. Time to experience beauty of whales TOURISTS hoping to see whales at the start of the “watching” season will surely be in for a treat. The first whales to make their way up the east coast of Australia were spotted towards the end of May off the Gold Coast. Mother whales and their calves were the first to make an appearance. One whale-watcher described the experience as “wonderful”. “Our entire family enjoyed the great hospitality from the crew,” the passenger said. “The whales are lovely giants and we are glad to have such up-close encounters with them.” Spirit of Gold Coast Whale Watching boasts a 99% success rate finding whales on its voyages in the past 20 years. It’s also the only company to have sighted famous white whale Migaloo for three consecutive years (2003-2005). “Our friendly and professional staff are

Queensland and NSW coastline from June to October. In just the last week of May, whale-spotting website Wild About Whales reported 168 sightings off the NSW coast... and those whales were heading to Queensland.

Retired or not, find a fresh, new lease on life After spending most of her adult life moving around Central Queensland for her late husband’s career, Pam Hill, 69, decided a Lendlease retirement village would be her final move. The decision to move closer to her children and grandchildren was made and Pam promised herself she would always remain active and connected to her community. “When I moved here I didn’t know anybody other than my family. I was immediately made to feel welcome into the village, but at the same time I felt it was equally important that I made an effort to be included too,” Pam said. Pam thoroughly enjoys being part of the village life and lives for her morning ‘water ballet’ and her community. “I really enjoy being part of something bigger, like a tribe where we’re all connected in some way, whether it be an activity in the lovely community centre, quiet cup of tea or heading out to the theatre together,” she said. I reckon we tear up about 25% of the car’s value as we drive out of the showroom! Many agree with me. Some 1.2 million Australians will buy a used car in the next 12 months, and it can be a money-saving option. Consumer group Choice estimates new cars lose around 14% of their value in each of the first three years and I reckon 14% in year one is very conservative. Motorists spend on average of $14,000 on a used car, so it’s a major purchase. But it’s not something most of us feel comfortable with. A study by CarHistory.com.au, the automotive arm of credit reference agency Veda, found less than one in three motorists are

However, some assets aren’t automatically covered by your will; superannuation is one of these assets. Your superannuation is held by the trustee of your superannuation fund and there are special rules that govern how a trustee can distribute your superannuation after you die. Your superannuation fund may permit you to make what is called a binding death nomination,

When making or reviewing a will it is important to review any nominations that you may have made... which allows you to determine who will receive your superannuation after you die. In a binding death nomination you can nominate for your superannuation to be paid to your estate, in which case your superannuation will then be distributed in accordance with the terms of your will. Alternatively, you can make a binding death nomination nominating a spouse, child or other dependant to be the beneficiary of your superannuation, in which case your superannuation will simply be paid directly to the nominated beneficiary. Honour the stockman Stockman’s Hall of Fame pays tribute to the outback pioneers, passing on their legacy Erle Levey
NOT everyone gets the chance to pass on some history of the nation. Yet that’s just what Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame CEO Lloyd Mills gets to do every day. The former Caloundra RSL business manager considers it a privilege to be able to help pay tribute to the pioneers of the outback and pass that legacy on to the coming generations. “Australians understand that the bush built the city,” Lloyd tells me as we walk through the landmark at the eastern entry to Longreach. “Everyone carries a bit of bush in them. It’s bringing that out in them.” After 22 years at Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast, Lloyd moved to Outback Queensland Tourism as general manager and after two years in that role the CEO position at the Hall of Fame came up. He asked the family what they wanted to do:
Stay in Longreach or move back to Caloundra? They knew it would be for three to five years. But as Lloyd says, the answer was easy considering their youngest child has been in Outback Queensland longer than he was at Caloundra.

“It’s got everything you need but not everything you want,” he says of Longreach. Lloyd’s biggest change in the move from coast to country was leaving friends, especially after surfing for 35 years. Yet the beauty is a barbecue on a Sunday. “There is not much chance of being rained
out,” he says with a grin. Professionally, one of greatest business challenges is that nothing is quick, nothing is easy in the bush. Yet Lloyd reflects that it is a bit like life. “I could rely on the internet on the coast, it was not a problem,” he said. “Here, it can be the way you do business that is different. “It’s definitely not 9–5 Monday to Friday.” In that regard, Lloyd believes he has brought with him an understanding of people in the city. “It’s a great advantage knowing how they think … it’s a way of getting people out here,” he said. “They come from all over … from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne. “The most exciting part is the numbers of families coming out. “The thing about out here is it is not as manufactured as some other places. You are dealing with real people,

real life issues.” And in the outback, where you get used to the unexpected, Lloyd without hesitation says the most unusual thing he has seen was a German traveller with his worldly goods in a wheelie bin, and he was
350km down the Birdsville Track. Yet the grey nomad market is very strong throughout the outback, Lloyd says, with the demand for camper trailers enormous. A highlight of a visit to
the Hall of Fame is the Outback Stockman’s Show, a light-hearted but informative look at caring for stock horses and sheep dogs. The big attraction was the brahman bull walking through the foyer.

IN NEW York City, there is diverse and different architecture, mind-blowing museums and people with attitude. But there’s also something else – cheap, expensive, different and thoroughly enthralling shopping experiences, wrapped up in a satin-ribboned box of history. Yes, stretching between the marvels of Macy’s to the glitter of Tiffany’s and notoriety of Bloomingdales, is an eclectic range of curiosity,
retro, vintage and everything-else stores, many in the boroughs. The lure of visiting what’s known as the world biggest department store was too big for me to resist. And if you’re going to Macy’s you must act like an American and wear your running shoes. Macy’s in Herald Square covers an entire city block, has 11 levels, and encompasses more than two million square feet of retail space. You don’t want to be caught out with the wrong shoes. Macy’s Herald Square
building was the first in the district to have a modern-day escalator. So, if you can’t face the shopping, there’s plenty of history to get in touch with. Thanks to the ladies from Sex in the City, Bloomingdales was on my bucket list. I can tell you it felt good to be part of this upmarket store and know that my refined taste was shared with global celebrities.
As it turns out Bloomingdales, founded in 1861, is a chain of luxury department stores owned by Macy’s. And there’s Tiffany & Co. This time it was visions of the gorgeous, elfin -like Audrey Hepburn in the classic movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s that drove me into this magnificent granite and limestone, art deco-inspired establishment. The world-renowned
Tiffany & Co store is at the corner of Fifth Ave and 57th St. It opened its doors for business October 21, 1940 and its style is as timeless as ever. In Chelsea, a neighbourhood on the West Side of Manhattan, another side of the diverse New York life, is presenting itself in the form of op shops, vintage stores, art studios, curiosity and costume stores.
Of late Chelsea has also attracted the bigger stores – Barneys CO-OP – which replaced the much larger original Barneys flagship store Comme des Garçons, and Balenciaga boutiques, as well as being near Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, Christian Louboutin. And between the Chelsea shops there are more than 200 art galleries waiting for your visitation.

Melbourne treasures Lygon, Rathdowne Sts provide the ingredients for relaxation AUSTRALIA’S warm summer weather can keep you locked in closely to the coastlines. But when it comes to experiencing a little bit of our cool, cosy climes, Melbourne is the place to rug up and enjoy. The sharp nip of a frisky breeze whisking around a warm body is always a lovely surprise. If you have a chosen a short getaway, this cosmopolitan city has so much to offer it’s wise to have your discovery agenda in order. I’m a regular to the southern city and love all of it, but this time around I decided it was all about the inner city suburb of Carlton, in particular Lygon St and a certain section of shops in Rathdowne St. My favourite modernhistory landmark is Alice’s Bookshop in nearby Rathdowne St. Luke Terbutt and Selina Braine took over the shop in June 2015 and this
month (June) they are celebrating the shop’s 30-year history. This tiny, four-roomed bookstore houses a collection of about 18,000 books and is perfectly located among the eateries, boutiques and bakeries known as Rathdowne Village. As their website says: “Browsers, thinkers, readers, dreamers – all are welcome.” Alice’s Bookshop smells like a bookshop, acts like a bookshop. For me Alice’s Bookshop is about surprises. I walk in there expecting anything and usually come up with everything. I pick up a favoured author on the outdoor stand and take it to the counter. “I’m surprised this book didn’t go sooner, it’s been outside for two weeks,” owner Luke says. “It was waiting for me,” I dare to tell him. And for me that’s what Alice’s Bookshop is made of – moments of pure

serendipity. I leave the bookshop with a bag of books, in a hurry to get home and review them. But I cannot quite get past Kylie’s No Dough
