Marching team steps into new era
But basic marching skills remain the foundation MARCHING girls on the Gold Coast are looking to boost their numbers in time for national titles to be held in Adelaide in April this year. The masters team, Trilogy, is made up of members aged from 45 to 67 years. Publicity officer Tracey Gauci says there’s a resurgence of interest in marching. “We are looking for new members, particularly exmarching girls who are interested in joining a funloving sociable, but competitive team,” she said. “We compete in the sport of drilldance, which was formerly known as Australian Girls Marching. Some of our team members are returning to the sport after a break of some 45 years. “During competition, we complete two routines - one set precision drill then an elective themed drill - so although many things have changed over the years, the

A place of seafaring treasures
By YVONNE GARDINER
THREE generations of maritime collectors have put their stamp on the Chinderah Bay Museum of the Sea. This cluttered former fisherman’s cottage is unlike traditional museums, where artefacts are labelled and neatly arranged. But there are thousands of treasures stacked high within its dusty walls. Co-owner Ray Evans points to pirate relics from the 1700s, cannonballs, charts owned by Captain Cook, shells and even keepsakes owned by the family of William Bligh. Whaling equipment is displayed in the museum with historical items like dugout canoes, swords and
harpoons. “My grandfather, father and brother were all maritime collectors,” Ray said. “I used to read tales of pirates and the high seas. “Grandfather would tell me stories while we walked along the beach. “Seafaring stuff, a lot was brass and copper and doesn’t rot away. “I’ve got a big wooden sea trunk made from oak which dates back to 1620. “Mainly I look for old maritime and fishing stuff, everything from cannons to ships’ wheels.” Ray has operated an antiques business for 35 years, most of those at Chinderah after setting up at Murwillumbah. “The antique trade is slowing up – I just thought, I want a bit of fun,” he said.
“The demand for antiques has definitely gone down. “The computer has changed the whole marketing of antiques.” ■Chinderah Bay Museum of the Sea, 76 Chinderah Bay Dr, Chinderah NSW, is open 10am to 4pm Friday to Tuesday (closed Wednesday and Thursday), phone 02 6674 0099.

Airport expansion riles residents Neighbours worry about proposed airport growth By YVONNE GARDINER
DISGRUNTLED residents of the Gold Coast and Tweed Shire opposed to expansion of the Gold Coast Airport - outlined in major development plans recently approved by the Federal Government - are joining forces. They are seeking a review of the ILS (instrument landing system) approval through legal channels and questioning the secrecy of approvals surrounding the airport terminal redevelopment Project LIFT. Jeff and Jan Godfrey, members of the Tweed Ratepayers Association, have lived for 12 years in a house at Tweed Heads. In Jan’s opinion, the airport has not followed due process with the ILS decision. She said it was underhanded and the airport had a “hidden agenda” to increase international flights. “It was only domestic flights before,” she said. “Each year it’s steadily just
got worse. “They go to Malaysia, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Japan.” The Godfreys are concerned that both the airport expansion and the ILS will necessitate the total removal of vegetation on crown land which is now a buffer for noise abatement. With land cleared, Jeff estimates the noise could become an intolerable 85 decibels. “We wonder if the ILS is a cover-up to clear all that land south of the terminal for the future extension,” he said. “At the moment it’s all forest which acts as an attenuator to all that noise.” He points out that the land is also significant for Aboriginals and koalas. High population density around the airport is also of concern to the Godfreys. “We’d like it to stay as a domestic airport,” Jan said. “I think it’s too dangerous to have as an international airport.” Gold Coast Airport chief
operating officer Marion Charlton said the ILS would be installed on airport land and also on NSW State land to the south of the airport. “The approved Major Development Plan (MDP) for the ILS sets out the potential environmental impacts associated with the works including required vegetation clearing,” she said. “Airservices and Gold Coast Airport will take every opportunity to mitigate the impacts as detailed in the MDP. “Clearing of the land as outlined in the ILS MDP is purely for the purposes of the installation of the ILS.” Marion said the airport’s master plan forecast passenger growth to 2031/32. “The ILS is being implemented to assist all airlines to continue operations in adverse weather and low visibility conditions and increase the reliability of landing at the Gold Coast Airport,” she said. “The terminal and apron expansion known as Pro-
ject LIFT is being undertaken to meet current and future capacity demand and deliver better service to customers. This will in turn create jobs and other economic opportunities for the community.” In 2015 the airport reached a historical milestone of welcoming six million passengers. “The strong passenger growth in 2015 was the result of the desirability of Gold Coast and Northern NSW as an inbound and outbound destination, from a range of domestic and international tourists.” Gold Coast Airport is the fifth busiest international airport and sixth overall busiest airport in Australia A public meeting will be held on Monday, March 14, at 6pm (NSW) at the South Tweed Community Centre, Heffron St, South Tweed, to provide information on airport expansion plans, the history of previous attempts of runway extension and the current situation.
Expansion plans at the Gold Coast Airport have upset many residents opposed to the ILS and Project LIFT.

Learning about Alzheimer’s care MORE than 50 local residents attended an informative seminar for dementia carers led by Alzheimer’s Australia (Qld) speaker Wendy Holdaway at Twin Towns Uniting Church Coolangatta recently. Ms Holdaway, a registered nurse and aged care assessor, explained the effects of dementia on the brain, discussed ways to improve communication in care giving situations and emphasised the need for self-care and retaining a sense of humour. “Dementia is increasingly having an impact on Australian families,” said Ms Holdaway. “Public seminars are a great avenue to raise awareness of this disease, help family and friends understand how to best cope with changing circumstances and to remind carers of the impor-
tance of self-care to ensure their own health and wellbeing.” According to Alzheimer’s Australia, currently 352,000 Australians live with dementia and an estimated 1.2 million people care for someone with de-

Almost 25,000 Australians have Younger Onset Dementia and this includes people under 65 and as young as 30 years of age. “Symptoms of dementia are often noticed by families up to three years before a firm medical diagnosis and finding help can be a time-consuming process,” said Ms Holdaway. “Alzheimer’s Australia focuses on practical information for people living with dementia at every stage and provides strategic support for carers,” she said. It seems everyone is after something for free these days. A recent post on social media where someone asked about getting a Will done cheaply resulted in literally hundreds of people providing backyard advice about where to get a ‘free’ Will. The standout suggestions were to go to the Public Trust Office where they will do your Will for nothing or to do a free do it yourself Will kit. Although there were a couple of people who provided sage advice to obtain proper legal advice and get a valid Will prepared, it seemed that most people were interested in getting something done for free. We have had a lot of experience with so-called free Wills involving the Public Trust Office (Qld) or the NSW Trustee and Guardian. They are both state Government instrumentalities that look after people who have lost capacity or who cannot manage their affairs. Another function which they promote is to act as executor in the estates of people who make their Wills with them. Executors are the appointed representatives of the deceased who are responsible for obtaining Probate of the will and administering the estate (i.e. calling in the assets and distributing to the beneficiaries) . We have experienced many problems with both the Public Trust Office (PTO) in Queensland and the NSW Trustee and Guardian (NSW TAG). Some of the matters that we have directly dealt with on behalf of families of deceased estates include the following:1. Theft of assets by Trust Office staff You may recall the reported stories of Public Trust Office employees rifling through the houses of deceased clients and taking valuables before the family could get into the house. There were certain employees of the Southport Public Trust Office who were jailed for stealing from deceased estates. We also had matters where beneficiaries sued the PTO to recover damages for valuables that had been misplaced or stolen; 2. Delay and inaction by Trust Office staff Beneficiaries and family members have complained that the administration process takes far too long to conclude and that assets of the estate (e.g. the family home) are basically left to go to rack and ruin due to the inaction of the Public Trust Office. Likewise, other assets of the estate, including shares and other investments etc. were basically sold with the cash put into low yielding Government bonds (this is obviously a conflict of interest where they favour Government investment entities); 3. Charging exorbitant fees to the estate The Public Trust Office and the NSW TAG charge their fees on a number of bases but it usually includes a percentage of the value of the assets under management. There are also other specific charges relating to certain steps in the administration based on a scale of fees but it is the percentage of the value of assets under management that usually racks up the most costs. In most cases, the administration of the estate is handled by unqualified public servants, who in many cases, charge an hourly rate that is higher than many lawyers!; 4. Poor communication to family and beneficiaries One of the biggest complaints from families and beneficiaries is that they do not receive any or any adequate communication from the Public Trust Office concerning the affairs of the estate and/or the management of the financial affairs of the deceased prior to their death. We constantly receive complaints from our clients that their phone calls, letters, emails, faxes are unanswered. If you are a residuary beneficiary in an estate you are entitled to have regular reports from the executors about the progress of the administration of the estate. You are also entitled to a full accounting of the estate and any financial dealings concerning the assets of the estate; 5. Failing to proactively resolve disputes There seems to be a common theme that where there is a claim brought against the estate or a dispute amongst the beneficiaries concerning the distribution of certain assets, this results in the Public Trust Office referring the matter in-house to their legal division. The legal division then charge the estate legal fees to “handle the claim”. In many cases there are criticisms of the in-house lawyers for both institutions in that they simply let the matter proceed to trial and charge the maximum fees with respect to the ongoing Court matter. 6. Failing to draft proper Wills in order to avoid potential disputes or properly deal with assets Inappropriate “simple Wills”. The majority of the Wills that are done by the Public Trust Office or NSW TAG are quite simple Wills and in many cases do not take into account the assets of the deceased in a proper way. For example, if a person has companies and trusts and is also in a second marriage with children on both sides, a simple Will is obviously not going to properly deal with all of the estate planning issues. Unfortunately, the unqualified public servants who draft the Will are not lawyers and do not properly understand estate planning. There are many other options in relation to appointment of executors to administer your estate. If you are concerned about having someone who is independent, another option is to appoint a lawyer as a co-executor with one or two of your family members to ensure that the administration of your estate or the handling of your affairs as attorneys is carried out in a proper fashion. Many people mistakenly believe that appointing a lawyer will cost a huge amount of money for them to conduct that role but this is not true. In many cases people take the administration of the estate to the lawyers who drafted the Will in any event and pay them fees to obtain Probate and assist them with the administration of the estate. Another advantage of having a lawyer as an executor or co-executor is that they hold compulsory indemnity insurance and are covered by fidelity insurance with respect to their trust account. This means that if they make a mistake or are negligent, there is insurance to cover any losses to the estate. In the unlikely event they take off overseas with the trust account money, this is also covered by the fidelity insurance. This would not be available if it was a relative who was not a professional. If we can help you with any of these issues, please do not hesitate to contact Department Manager Donna Tolley on direct line 07 5506 8241, email dtolley@attwoodmarshall.com.au or freecall 1800 621 071.

Healthy eating at the heart of the Country Kitchens
IN A new initiative, Mermaid Beach residents are the first to participate in a state-wide challenge to improve the health of Queenslanders. The Country Kitchens program, organised by the Queensland Country Women’s Association (QCWA) and a team of nutritionists funded by the Queensland Government, is promoting healthier eating. The three-hour, hands-on workshop was conducted at the QCWA Mermaid Beach hall. Twenty-five participants enjoyed a lively cooking demonstration, received nutritional facts and tasty recipes then prepared and shared a delicious lunch made with seasonal produce. A further four workshops will run from April through to September. QCWA Country Kitchens program coordinator Fiona McKenzie said in places

Ms McKenzie said she was excited about the positive
support received from QCWA Mermaid Beach to tackle this huge health problem and their willingness to promote healthy eating on the Gold Coast. “The QCWA is perfectly placed to make lasting changes within Queensland communities. They are an integral part of life particularly in regional towns,”

Ms McKenzie said. “Having their support will ensure tasty and nutritious meals are on the menu.” As part of the three-year QCWA Country Kitchens program, the team of four nutritionists will travel with a mobile kitchen to over 50 communities across Queensland to promote healthy eating and more ex-
ercise through workshops conducted with the community, schools and district organisations. Country Kitchens is also keen to capitalise on the cooking prowess of QCWA members. Widely recognised as skilled recipe developers, QCWA members’ talents will be used to develop healthy versions of classic QCWA dishes. The next Country Kitchens nutrition workshop is on Friday, April 1 from 9.30am at QCWA Mermaid Beach Hall, 43 Ventura Street Mermaid Beach. End in site for long-term casuals By YVONNE GARDINER
CARAVAN owners will have far fewer sites to choose from when the Kingscliff Beach Holiday Park redevelopment is finished in 2019. And long-term casuals won’t be welcome. The Kingscliff Foreshore Revitalisation planned by Tweed Shire Council will slice a third of the sites from
the holiday park. This three-stage $21.2 million project is aimed “to protect and enhance facilities along the Kingscliff CBD coastline”, according to council. It includes a permanent sea wall and the creation of the seafront Kingscliff Central Park which will open up ocean views. Construction is scheduled to start in early 2017 and
the redevelopment will close the caravan park for 18 months. Council intends to provide a mix of accommodation options, including more cabins. After the modernisation, there’ll be 61 larger sites compared to the current 176. Murray Grieve, of Murrumba Downs in Brisbane, has been a regular visitor to the beachside Kingscliff ca-
ravan park. “Mum and Dad used to come here,” he said. “It was much bigger then. They’ve lost 150 metres off the beachfront through erosion. “It’s disappointing that they’re making it smaller. “I would have thought, with the increase in grey nomads, they would have made it bigger.” Murray says he’s pleased that so-called “long-term casuals” at the park, some with dilapidated vans, are being moved on. “That’s a site that could be used by tourists,” he said. Fifty-seven long-term ca-
sual sites will disappear with the modernisation. Tweed Coast Holiday Parks Reserve Trust executive manager Richard Adams said local business chambers, sports clubs and fishermen had been consulted over many years about the changes. Long-term casuals at the Fingal Holiday Park in Tweed Shire have also been
given notices to vacate to make way for tourists. “Over a year, these tourist sites will return more income to the trust than the long-term casuals, to the benefit of Tweed ratepayers,” he said. ■Find out more about the Kingscliff Foreshore Revitalisation at yoursaytweed. com.au/KingscliffForeshore.

Gold Coast Council election Q&A: THE Seniors Newspaper asks Elanora resident Suzie Riordan about issues which will help her decide who to vote for in the coming Gold Coast election. There are 59 candidates contesting the March 19 poll. Suzie also owns a design business at Burleigh Heads: Q: What do you consider to be the main three issues in the Gold Coast Council
election? A: Traffic congestion and our lack of public transport options for the southern end of the Gold Coast which includes Division 13. Balancing development with preserving the natural environment that makes our part of the Gold Coast so special. One of our top local issues is the revitalisation of Palm
Beach business area. Q: Why is that? A: Palm Beach has for too long been seen as the poor cousin lodged between its more glamorous neighbours – Burleigh Heads and Coolangatta. In my view, we have the best beach on the Gold Coast framed by two beautiful creeks and yet the area has suffered from an image
problem and a sense of neglect by the current council. There’s a lot about Palm Beach and its lifestyle that’s worth preserving, but its business area is in need of an upgrade. As a business person myself, I under-
stand we need investment – and that council has a role to play through the development of appropriate infrastructure. Businesses are trying to invigorate the area, but it would be great to have support and a fresh
energy in council to help it succeed. Even though Palm Beach, Elanora and Reedy Creek top daily traffic reports as the congestion hotspots across the city, we have not been a priority in getting

Resident tells what’s important our traffic problems fixed. I want our councillor to be in there fighting to fix our traffic congestion and give our southern end real public transport alternatives. I also want our local councillor to have ideas as to
what they can do to help us get around in those peak times – not just say it’s the problem for another level of government. Q: How could council improve your community? A: Council really has an im-
pact on people’s lives so I want someone who listens to what we want and need. I think it’s only by listening that our councillor can deliver for all who live here, including seniors and the growing number of young
families in our area. I like the idea of more bikeways and pedestrian paths around our area and know this is being pushed by at least one of our candidates. Q: What attributes are you looking for in a candidate? A: I am looking for someone who listens. While listening is top of my list, I also want someone whose promises are achievable –
I’ve been around long enough to see the folly of over-promising. It means ultimately nothing gets done and is a sure sign that there’s a lack of vision for our area. I believe a lot of people do want change in our area. We certainly want to be higher up the priority list for the city. I also want someone who understands
why our area is unique and is prepared to fight to preserve what we love about it. I think local government needs a local who understands the challenges in an area because they live through them. I want someone who shares in the problems and sees the opportunities, who recognises the issues that affect us because they affect them.

It will be known as North Gold Coast Probus, and monthly (morning tea) meetings will be held at the Hope Island Tavern, last Tuesday of the month. This new Probus Club will be holding it’s first meeting at the Hope Island Tavern on Tuesday March 29, commencing at 9.30am. Please phone Lorraine on 0414 878 062, or email moyesdl@bigpond. com for details and to express your interest. ■ Burleigh Waters Many of our group enjoy extra fellowship over lunch at the Burleigh Sports Club after each general meeting, and some also participate in a social lunch on the fourth Monday each month. Retired or semi-retired men are invited to club meetings on the third Monday of each month at 10am in the Burleigh Waters Community Centre, 131 Christine Ave. Burleigh Waters. Although this is a men’s club, wives /partners are very welcome to share the club’s fellowship, CONTINUED PAGE 17
Ann Rickard takes a glance at the lighter side of ageing
Snapshots of life with Ann Rickard.
I’VE never been a fan of self-help books. You? Don’t answer. You either love these books for the boost of motivation they give you, or you scoff at them as a bit of mumbo jumbo. Or maybe you swing from one way to another. Whatever works for you. There are a zillion self-help books for the aging person, myriad pages of information to make us seniors feel good about aging, endless advice to keep us active/involved/relevant/happy. I’m dipping in and out of a book called Ageing Disgracefully – it’s an old book I found in our garage covered in dust, obviously ready to be put out in a gar-
age sale that never happened. I resurrected it, dusted it off and it’s good again. Written very tongue-in-cheek, it’s full of wry and pithy little snippets. It cheers me up every time I open it. Let me quote you a few of the gems in the hope it will cheer you too. “Don’t lie about your age. Be proud that you’ve made it this far without losing your sanity or a major organ.” I have never felt inclined to lie about my age – until three weeks ago, when I celebrated a birthday with a whopping big O on the end of it. Now I have declared myself 49, staying that way forever. Let’s dip again into the little book: “Get on a motorbike and take off down the coast.” Nup, not doing that one. Ever. And finally this one: “Always remember what Oscar Wilde said: ‘Youth is wasted on the young.’ ” So you see, some self-help books do make you feel better. Now go and clear out your garage.

Eight things you should know about Wills
Carolyn Devries, CEO New Way Lawyers
WILLS are like most other legal documents, people have a general idea of what they are about but they may feel daunted by the details and do not fully understand who should make a Will, when one should be made and what should be included. In our eight-part series, we hope to shed light on commonly unknown issues relating to Wills. More than 50% of adult Australians do not have a valid Will. According to research by the Western Australian Public Trustee, more than half of Australians either do not have a Will or do not have a Will
which is effective on death. If you pass away without a Will, the law in the state where you live will determine who is responsible for distributing assets you own and who will receive these assets. This means that you will have had no control over who is in charge of distributing your assets and your assets may not be received by the people that you would have chosen. Even if you have a Will, your Will may be invalid if it has not been properly completed. A Will may be invalid due to mistakes such as not having a proper witness or deeper issues such as someone having undue influence on the content. We encourage everyone to document their wishes in a valid Will. This information is intended as general legal information only for people living in Queensland and is not a substitute for individual legal advice.

‘If you have a body and a breath you can do yoga’ - Taraji IF YOU think this sounds highly unlikely let me assure you, you are not alone ...don’t you have to be able to put your foot behind your head and sing Jingle Bells at the same time to do Yoga? This concept of only needing a body and a breath to do yoga was first thought up many moons ago by an Indian guy called Patanjali. He decided to describe and record the process of yoga. Many Indian sages believe that in the Golden Age (the first period of humanity as we know it) people meditated naturally and lived in a natural state of bliss. However, by the time the great sage Patanjali was born people were becoming very confused. They were starting to compare themselves with each other and in the
Taraji journey: Therese Maguire
process were loosing sight of the true purpose of yoga. Yoga’s purpose is to enable our journey to physical and metaphysical freedom. Most of us believe that physical suffering as we age is an inevitable stage of life. We also seem to buy in to the notion that stress is unavoidable if we wish to sustain our lifestyle. Patanjali describes the way out of this physical and me-
taphysical stress. He takes us on a journey to settle the mind and therefore attain freedom from suffering. This journey to freedom is set out in eight steps: Honouring the natural laws of life (including authenticity to oneself); observing the rules for living (belief in something greater than self); very simple daily postures to prepare our body for meditation; specific breathing techniques; withdrawal of the senses; using specific effort to relax the mind; meditation and eventually the settled mind (Samadhi) Next month we will look at the specifics of the natural laws of life and how this relates to the Rejuvenation Revolution. Hernias common in men
Good medicine with Dr Michael Gillman.
HERNIAS are surprisingly common in men, with around 27% of males developing a groin hernia at some time in their lives. This compares with only 3% of women developing the same condition. The two most common age groups that this condition occurs in are those aged less than one year and those who are greater than 50 years of age. So what is a hernia? A hernia occurs when the inside layers of the abdominal wall have weakened, resulting in a bulge or tear in the groin or stomach. The wall of the abdomen has natural areas of weakness and hernias can develop at these sites as a result of heavy strain on the abdominal wall, aging, injury, incision lines from previous surgery or weakness from birth.
The contents of the bulge can be fat or bowel tissue. Groin hernias usually show up as a bulge in the groin which slowly enlarges over time. During human male development in the uterus, the testicle is formed up near the kidney and travels down to the scrotum bringing with it a blood supply comprising an artery and a vein, as well as the vas deferens which carries the sperm back up to the prostate region. The track that is created by the testicle coming down into the scrotum is not completely closed off and this leaves the area of potential weakness. There are a number of potential triggers for a hernia to develop. Chronic coughing or anything that causes increased pressure inside the abdomen, weakening of the tissues from obesity or medications such as cortisone type drugs. Hernias are usually treated with keyhole surgery although for very large hernias, traditional open surgery may be required. Dr Michael Gillman www.DrMichaelGillman .com info@DrMichaelGillman. com

Autumn lawn care tips Keep your lawn healthy during autumn.
AS THE temperature changes this autumn, so too should your lawn care. Ross Boyle, president of Turf Australia explains that as the weather cools down, there are a few simple steps you can take to give your lawn the boost it needs to stay healthy over winter. “During autumn, our lawns start to slow down. You might not need to water it as often as you do through the summer months, but there are a few simple tricks you can do now that will keep your lawn growing well and prevent weeds taking hold over the winter months,” he said. Here are his top five autumn lawn care tips: 1. Fertilise Autumn is fertilising time. Fertilising now will give your lawn the boost it needs to keep it healthy through winter. It will also help prevent weeds from taking hold while your
lawn’s growth rate slows. 2. Clear the leaves A build-up of fallen leaves on the ground can damage your lawn. Be sure to either rake them up, or if it’s just a few, mow with a catcher. Leaves left to decompose on the lawn can starve it of sunlight, increase the risk of disease and damage your lawn. 3. Lift your mower height Raise the height of your mower a couple of notches. Keeping your lawn a little higher helps it absorb more sunlight and protects it from the cooler weather. 4. Slow the watering As the weather cools, your lawn won’t need as much water as it did through summer. But if the weather is exceptionally dry or you have a hot spell, a deep watering may still be necessary. Otherwise, rainfall will generally be enough. 5. Attack the weeds and grubs Broad leaf weeds and lawn grubs can take hold in autumn. If you notice any of these appearing, it’s best to take control of them before they become established. Markets celebrate success priority but we also support farmers slightly further afield – in the Byron Shire if a particular produce range cannot be sourced from our Tweed farmers, and sometimes we go just a tad further. “For example, apples simply don’t grow in this climate but a local family works with their relatives near Stanthorpe who are orchardists bringing their apples to our market. “This works well as it is supporting local self-employment and a farming family who grow produce that we cannot source locally but which is very popular for its taste. “Many mums have said

THE increasing popularity of farmers’ markets is undeniable, as families seek out fresh, local produce and choose to support growers close to home. Thriving Murwillumbah Farmers’ Market celebrates its fifth birthday in April. Market manager Sue Beckinsale came from a farming background so had an intrinsic desire to support local farmers. “The Murwillumbah Farmers’ Market is a true farmers’ market that aims to support our local farming community,” she said. “Tweed Shire farmers are a

Stallholder Des Cecil, 64, and his wife Donna own a couple of farms, at Casino and Doon Doon. Their stall is packed high with fresh vegetables and fruits in season. Des also stocks produce grown by his brother Barry, who has a farm at Terranora. “We only do the two markets – Byron and Murwillumbah,” Des said. “(Murwillumbah is) a very good market. Low vision devices to help vision impaired
A WOMAN from Ballina on the NSW north coast cried when she was able to read a book using a stateof-the-art VEO magnifier, having lived for ten years with severe vision impairment. A man from Coorparoo celebrated his 100th birthday by working his way through a mountain of paperwork and accessing files on his computer using his new desktop magnifier. Both are enjoying renewed independence and quality of life with assistance from vision aids and technology specifically tailored to meet their lifestyle and visual needs. Faced with an ageing population, demand for low vision aids and technologies is expected to rise in coming years as people seek out new ways to make the most of their remaining vision in an effort to maintain or regain independence and increase quality of life. Cr Glenn Tozer.
I’VE loved serving the community of Highland Park, Mudgeeraba and the Hinterland for almost four years now and remain as committed as ever to listening carefully to the needs of residents and delivering on their expectations. While I’m a little way from being a senior myself, our work with a variety of community groups that provide services for seniors has been enjoyable and rewarding. In particular, our short films, Mudgeeraba Pioneering Stories which is a series of documentaries commemorating stories of yesteryear with pioneering families, has been a highlight. There’s more we can do together to make this place the best place to work, live and raise a family and I hope you’ll trust me to lead you through this exciting time as 2020 approaches.
Locals have encouraged me to articulate my top five achievements and while our website will have outlined 50 achievements and commitments by the day of the election, the below are those Top 5: 1. Delivering $14m worth of road upgrades and refurbishments benefiting the division over the term. 2. Expanding the pathway network to connect people better to community facilities and the Village. 3. Promoting the Hinterland as a cultural tourist destination through music events, arts events, and heritage themed community events. 4. Enabling the many community groups of our division to succeed through our community development program, connecting them to the business community and the greater public so they can all grow and
thrive. 5. Restoring transparency and accessibility to the local council through an active social media presence, weekly community consultations, being present and accessible at community events and publishing/ sharing local budgets in a participatory fashion. In the coming four years, we need to continue to deliver on the best network of pathways for pedestrian, improve our roads so traffic can move freely, and deliver responsible development and economic growth keeping locals employed locally. Seniors in the hinterland have asked for a collaborative, strategic councillor who serves humbly and delivers on his promises. I’d be honoured to serve you again and I hope you Vote 1 Tozer on Election Day. www.seniorsnews.com.au
community news Ignoring your prostate, what it might cost you ONE in three men over 50 have benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) commonly known as an enlarged prostate; this number rises to nearly 80% of men when they reach 70 years. While BPH is not fatal like prostate cancer, it can cause a lot of pain and inconveniences. Common symptoms are frequent and painful urination, and for some cases sexual performance is affected. It is no wonder that we have reached epidemic proportions, yet so few men talk openly about it. According to Mr Indra, spokesperson for Graminex Australia, a company that specialises in developing prostate medication, men in general do tend to be tight-lipped about their current condition. “It’s normal for men to feel uncomfortable talking about their prostate and their symptoms (of BPH), that’s okay, we understand,” says Indra,

The key to this problem, he believes is to slowly encourage a culture where men should not feel ashamed to talk about their medical condition, especially if it concerns their “personal equipment”. The good news is that all this is starting to change, especially with the internet which allows men to be more discreet in search for prostate health information. Still it cannot make up for face-to-face interaction, hence Graminex Australia, which introduced Magnus Shield, a new over-the-counter prostate supplement, has been working together with non-profit prostate support groups to help bring awareness to men. REMOTE monitoring tools add to the cutting edge technology of today’s modern CPAP machines. If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnoea, chances are that you’ve either trialled or bought your own CPAP machine in the past. For many people, it is an inconvenience to use, but for those that persist and feel the benefits, it can be life changing. The cost of not using a CPAP machine can be debilitating. Studies have shown that un-treated patients may be in a higher risk of stroke, heart attack and dementia. The physical “dog tiredness” during the day, shortterm memory loss, excessive snoring and overall loss of sleep quality can have a massive long-term ripple effect on our relationships and quality of life in general.
So why is it that some people who have taken ownership of their health and don the CPAP mask every night feel that it’s just not doing what it used to? Reasons at a glance: Worn out machine motors; incorrect pressures; mask leak; humidification (too

Do your legs protect your heart? No... NO. Not just by walking. Whilst walking is great for a healthy heart, there is another way to exercise which anyone can do, sitting comfortably in front of TV. You can boost circulation and get blood back to your heart – without strenuous exercise. Your legs can help pump the blood. They are sometimes referred to as “your other heart”. Working the calf muscles with a “treadle” action, just like the old sewing machines, is the key. The Aircycle “treadle” exercise assists the calf pump mechanism. “Anyone on diuretics with the problem of fluid retention and anyone sitting with legs down for any length of time may be helped by using this exerciser,” Dr Matthew Parsons said. Several times a day, for even two or three minutes, while on the phone or having coffee, will quickly improve your circulation. “My swollen ankles have reduced and I can sleep without pain” wrote Alex Simmonds. “And my night cramps have gone!” “Since using the Aircycle, my diabetic ulcer has healed and all the pain gone. My toes have stopped tingling and getting sore and are back to a healthy pink colour,” emailed Richard Leighton. Aircycle exercises also strengthen leg muscles to help support joints and relieve arthritic pain. Keeping your legs moving is

Local Hearing Care practice selected for international product trial ARE you in the market for a hearing aid but are confused with all of the options and models that are available? You’re not alone, hearing technology is certainly entering a golden age but what features are really beneficial to your lifestyle? Wouldn’t it be fantastic to be able to switch between several different hearing technologies and hear the difference for yourself? To answer this need, Bernafon AG an innovative Swiss hearing aid manufacturer has developed the Beflex Trial System. Beflex is an industry first, it’s the first trial solution that makes the direct comparison of multiple hearing aid performance categories tangible for clients. At the press of a button you can switch between a basic hearing instrument to an intermediate or advanced device and compare how well you can hear with each in various sound environments, enabling an informed decision on what technology you need. Entire Hearing Care, a highly respected hearing care provider, has been exclusively selected by Bernafon to trial the Beflex in the Gold Coast area. www.seniorsnews.com.au

Last chance for TTRs THERE are rumours that transition to retirement pensions (TTRs) may be attacked in the May budget. They were introduced in 2006 in tandem with the Howard-Costello reform of the superannuation system. Many older workers wanted to cut down their hours and were happy to accept a reduced wage for doing so, but they did not want to give up work completely. The problem was access to super - employees cannot access their super until preservation age unless they are prepared to sign a statement that they are permanently retired. TTRs solved the problem and enabled the 55-and-overs to have their cake and eat it too. Australians could access their superannuation as an income stream while continuing to work. What made TTRs particularly attractive was the ability to continue contributing to super while drawing a tax-free income from the fund; it enabled anyone adopting the strategy to take advantage of the diffe-
He would still salary sacrifice at the same level but he would start to draw a pension from a superannuation fund. Immediately that starts, his superannuation fund ceases to pay tax, which means higher after-tax returns. It’s possible that a pay cut of $15,266 a year net would leave the family finances short. If that’s the case he could use part of the income from the TTR to make up any shortfall - if his budget can cope, he could contribute straight back into superannuation as a non-concessional contribution, on which there is no entry tax. My advice is to start a TTR as soon as possible if you are eligible - after May it could be too late. rence between the 15% tax on contributions and their marginal tax rate. Think about Jack, a 60year-old who earns $105,000 a year, which puts him in the 39% tax bracket. His employer is required to contribute $9975 (9.5%) to super for him, and he is able to contribute a further $25,025 to super as a concessional contribution. After taking advice, he decides to increase the amount he salary sacrifices to super to $25,025. This will reduce his take-home pay by $15,266 a year. The contribution will incur a 15% entry tax of $3754, but he still enjoys the experience of having his superannuation boosted by a net $21,2713. He is $6006 better off - it’s a no-brainer! But he can put even more money in his pocket by starting a TTR.

“I will tell you how to become rich…Be fearful when others are greedy. Be greedy when others are fearful”. Warren Buffet THE malaise affecting equity markets and risk assets generally has shown no let up with Australian shares now joining Europe, Japan and emerging markets in a bear market. (Defined as a 20% or greater decline from the most recent high). Global growth worries could drive more shortterm weakness. But in the absence of a US/global recession historical trends inform us it is unlikely to be a deep and long bear market. When the winter comes you have the option to be like the bear and wait it out as long as you have a sound cave (good strategy) to rest in. You can keep in mind. Sharp falls are part of the course of share markets. Shares literally climb a wall of worry over many years with numerous events dragging them down periodically, but with the general trend ultimately rising and providing higher returns than other more stable assets. Selling after a major fall simply locks in the loss.
When shares and growth assets fall they are “cheaper” and offer higher longterm return potential. The key is to look for opportunities that the current fall offers – shares are getting cheaper, investment yields on shares and corporate debt are rising. You can’t predict the bottom but one way to manage it is to average in over time. While shares may have fallen in value the dividends from the market haven’t. So the income flow you are receiving from a well-diversified portfolio of shares continues to remain attractive, particularly against bank deposits. Shares and other related assets will bottom at the point of maximum bearishness, ie just when you and everyone else feel most negative towards them. The personal challenge is to resist the crowd mentality. In current volatile times the negative news is in our face. It makes is harder to stick to an appropriate longterm strategy let alone see the opportunities that are thrown up. See if you can turn down the noise and get sound advice. A strategic approach to investing is always advised. Despite the volatile begin-
ning of 2016 our clients have been pleasantly surprised in the buoyancy of their investments. This has been as a result of the inclusion of an international component of investments and the good dividends of their portfolio from last year’s market. GET in quick as you now have 37 days to apply for a Seniors Week subsidy of up to $1000. Seniors Week provides the opportunity to unite all Queenslanders to celebrate the valuable contributions seniors make in their communities. Whether as volunteers or in the workforce, seniors utilise their experience and knowledge as community leaders, carers, grandparents and advocates. “It’s on for young and old” has become a catchcry of the event and will be used again in 2016 to build on its success over the past two years. Starting on Saturday, August 13, Seniors Week 2016 will run through to Sunday
August 21 - nine days of celebrations. Last year 737 events were held from the Northern Peninsula Region to Mount Isa, Cairns to the Granite Belt and the Gold Coast. “For some living in rural and remote areas, Seniors Week is the one time of year they get to catch up with current and long lost friends,” COTA Queensland chief executive Mark Tucker-Evans said. “For others, Seniors Week is a way to assist in combating social isolation through the discovery of programs and activities, creating new friendships and remaining an active member of society.” COTA Queensland coordinates Seniors Week and re-
ceives Queensland Government funding to collaboratively plan and subsidise Seniors Week events and activities. The Queensland Government has provided $100,000 to subsidise activities during Seniors Week 2016. Applications are open for community organisations to apply for a maximum of $1000. TO CRUISE, or not to cruise? That was the question my wife and I faced when trying to decide what to do over the holidays. We’ve both done a fair bit of exploring, but never on the high seas, and tales of norovirus and sea sickness meant we had given it a wide berth. But as more and more of our family and friends returned from their own voyages with happy tales, we decided to take the plunge. We decided to push the boat out on a 12-day cruise around New Zealand. We chose the Kiwi route because we wanted something close and familiar and it offered lots of stops along the way, including the Bay of Islands, Tauranga, Wellington, Akaroa, Dunedin, Dusky, Doubtful and Milford Sounds, Hobart and Sydney. We flew in to Auckland three days before setting sail. This gave us a chance to explore the capital, which we thoroughly enjoyed, especially the impressive redevelopment around the docks. Bay of Islands: As this was our first port of call we chose to go with the travel agent’s tip and booked one of the pre-advertised excursions. Our day out included a visit to the kauri tree forest and scrambling through the nooks and crannies of a glow worm cave. Tauranga: Here we elected to do one of the ship’s specialty excursions. You’ll only hear about these once you’re onboard. It included the chance to explore Rotorua’s active volcanic craters, bubbling mud pools,

spouting geysers and the people who choose to live, work and play among it all. One of the highlights of the trip. Wellington: Here you can walk off the ship and be in the city centre in half an hour. We chose to do our own thing. We made our way to the closest information centre and in a short time were on our way to Zealandia, a protected natural area in the city where the area’s original fauna and flora is being restored. We returned to the city via Wellington’s cable car and spent a few hours exploring the city’s restaurants and shops. Akaroa: This is a small, picturesque French village nestled in an extinct volca-

no and here we also chose to follow our noses. Dunedin: A short bus trip from the docks and you are in the centre of Dunedin. Again we chose to do our own thing and in this instance we had to retrace the steps of long-dead relatives. That done, we returned to the city to catch a
short steam train ride along the coast. The return leg goes right past the harbour and we hopped off, stopped in a few of the village’s knick-knack shops before returning to the ship. When cruising Milford Sound find a comfortable spot on the deck and enjoy the vistas.
Dusky, Doubtful and Milford Sounds: There’s not the option to get off the ship here. But there’s no need to. You find a comfortable spot on the open deck and take in the vistas as the ship noses its way through New Zealand’s spectacular world heritage site. Hobart: Hobart was the one destination that lived up to its reputation. It was raining. But we didn’t mind this as we’d had spectacular weather on the rest of our trip. This wasn’t our first visit to the Tasmanian capital so it was an easy choice to do our own thing. Breakfast came first. No shortage of great eating spots here. Then a visit to Salamanca markets before going to the always brilliant Museum of
Old and New Art. Sydney: The highlight of the Sydney leg came before we’d even arrived in port. The Sydney to Hobart journey meant a day at sea and we chose to tour the inside of the ship. This included the bridge, the engine and anchor room, the staff quarters and the kitchen. Food, glorious food Cruises are notorious for the amount of food available. Buffet, restaurants and cafes. We tried out all options. From the buffet to the posh French number with a $50 cover charge for just walking through the door. The food was great, plenty of variety in formal or non-formal settings. You won’t go hungry.

Take a quick family getaway to
By ANDREW MEVISSEN
ASK your teenage children where your next family getaway should be and a plethora of tropical places with golden beaches emerges. So where did we go instead? Tasmania. Hobart, specifically, for a quick two-day break on dates that suited everyone’s madcap schedules. The kids had never been to Tassie before so we thought we could help them tick off that state before they were all grown up. On arrival in Australia’s most southern and secondoldest capital city, grumblings about the lack of beach resorts soon gave way to a respectful appreciation of Hobart’s colourful history, natural beauty and, most of all, its gourmet experiences. Dating all the way back to 1803 and with a population of just 220,000, Hobart has proudly retained much of its colonial heritage with fine examples of Georgian and Victorian architecture
lining the broad, glassy expanse of the Derwent River. It’s also an easy, compact city to get around with a peak 15 minutes of traffic instead of an hour or two. For our first day, we hired a car to ascend 1270m-high Mt Wellington which towers over Hobart to offer one of the finest vistas in Australia. So high is the peak and on such a southerly latitude that it snowed during our summer visit to the summit, but not before we enjoyed the sweeping panorama over the wilderness-surrounded city. And at least we can now say we took the kids to the snow this year. Back in a warm car, we headed down to Fern Tree in the mountain’s foothills for a gentle stroll through the ferny gullies and then crossed the Tasman Bridge to sample Tassie’s delectably famous molluscs at the Barilla Bay Oyster Farm near the airport (www.barillabay.com.au). We tucked into Barilla’s renowned and well-named

As you do in Richmond, we repaired to the cosy tea

I took the bus back to Winton with a better attitude, knowing it would be a great adventure.” Sharon, who also likes bike riding, did think about joining her husband on the adventure but baulked at the idea of spending long days in the heat of the Outback. Now Karl wants to share his dream with other likeminded adventurers who want to escape the stresses of life ... “and enjoy free time under the stars”. “Seeing parts of Australia on a bicycle is one of the most rewarding travel experiences you’ll ever have,” said Karl who has set up Pedal Away Cycle Tours which offers cyclists from all walks of life trips from two days to three months. All the tours include a support vehicle (driven by Karl), all meals and accommodation, staying in camps or hotels.

London is, in my opinion, one of the highlights of the city. Some jaded tourists might think it’s daggy, but not me. The wax figures are so lifelike you half expect them to speak. Madame Tussauds was founded by artist and wax sculpture Maria Tussaud. She created her first wax figure, Voltaire, in 1777. Now it has branches all over the world. Well, with such a line-up of celebrities anyone is guaranteed a good day. Apart from the regrettable fact that all these Alisters were wax and quite unable to talk back to me, you could say it was a memorable experience. Madame Tussauds in

AUSTRALIA seemed a long way away for English bricklayer Karl Andreis and he never dreamed he would eventually ride around the vast continent on a bicycle. But the idea became more than a dream 26 years after he immigrated to Queensland in 1983 with his wife Sharon and two children it became a 14,000 km solo adventure through coastal and outback regions in five states. Today, Karl, 64, says he never regretted the decision to ride off into the sunset in 2009, although he nearly called it off when he reached Winton, 1150 km from his Slacks Creek home in Brisbane. “I sat around a campfire and thought of Judy and feeling a little guilty I took a bus back home,” Karl said. “My wife asked why I had returned. She said if I didn’t go through with it I’d regret it for the rest of my life. She

However, Easter is actually the ideal time to swap carb laden dishes for tasty lowcarb meals. “Contrary to popular believe, Easter is an ideal time for low-carb eating, particularly with plenty of sumptuous seafood on top of the menu. “With a little pre-planning and some savvy switchouts the whole family will love, you can finish the holiday without feeling heavy,” said Colette Heimowitz, vice-president of Nutrition and Education at Atkins Nutritionals.
Follow these simple swaps to get set for a scrumptious Easter which won’t wreak havoc on your waistline. These easy low-carb Easter recipes might soon become family favourites: Atkins Easter Buns Makes 8 buns, 5.7g of carbs per bun Ingredients: ¾ cup (72 grams) almond flour ¼ cup (57 grams) coconut flour 3 eggs ¼ teaspoon baking soda ¼ teaspoon salt 1/3 cup almond milk ½ teaspoon cinnamon ½ teaspoon mixed spice 2 teaspoons grated orange peel 1 Atkins Endulge Milk Chocolate bar Method: Pre-heat oven to 175°C and line a flat baking tray with grease proof paper. Sieve the almond flour

and coconut flour into a mixing bowl. Add the baking soda, salt, spices and grated orange peel, and half the Atkins chocolate bar chopped into small pieces and combine. Add the eggs and almond milk and mix well. Divide the mixture into 8 even parts. Using your hands, roll the mixture into balls. Place
the balls of mixture onto the lined baking tray and squash down gently to flatten the base of each ball. Using a knife, carve a cross (about ½ centimetre deep) in the top of each bun. Create slivers from the remainder of the Atkins bar, and place these into the carved lines to create chocolate crosses. Bake in oven for 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the centre of a bun comes out clean. Enjoy fresh out of the oven. Or, if the buns have cooled, cut in half and lightly toast on a sandwich press to warm. Store in an air-tight container in a cool place. Atkins low-carb chocolate Mousse Serves 4, 3.5g of carbs per serve Ingredients: 120ml double cream 1 tsp stevia (or your choice
An extraordinary woman’s life At the Drop of a Veil/ Marianne Alireza IN THE 1940s a pretty, young, Californian university student fell in love and married a fellow student. Nothing unusual here, except the fellow student was from a Saudi Arabian royal family and her marriage made her the first western woman to marry into a high-ranking Saudi Arabian family. Ali Alireza was majoring in business and the young woman was studying romance languages when they met in a paleontology class at the University of California at Berkeley. They married in 1943, the year Marianne Alireza graduated. Alireza says she had no illusions of what it would be like to wear a veil and a long gown constantly. “Ali was very honest about what my life would be like. On my engagement night he went all over it again and made sure I knew.” In 1945 the couple moved back to Saudi Arabia and suddenly Marianne found herself veiled and cloaked, living in another culture and listening to a foreign language. “There were no roads, no hotels, no stores, no elec-
tricity. We didn’t go out, and we didn’t do things. We lived together,” she said, referring in particular to the women of the family. For twelve years Marianne Alireza lived within a female group composed of her mother-in-law, sisters-in-law, and various children and servants. During that time she experienced a range of emotions as she struggled within primitive housing conditions, tasting new food, adjusting to a desert environment and in particular the strict rules for female behaviour. Love can lead you through unexplored territory and in this case Marianne Alireza’s personal commitment to her marriage gave her courage and strength to overcome the obstacles of life in a foreign civilisation A reading of this book in 2016, not only exemplifies the contrasts and similarities of different worlds, it takes into account the fluid role of women, social

changes in the last 50 years, and the effects of oil wealth on Saudi Arabia. Marianne chronicles her early perceptions, her choking anger at female confinement, living conditions and her diplomat husband’s long work-enforced separations. Equally, she describes her wonderful experiences as she and her family travel abroad on the Queen Mary and spend time in posh hotels in London and apartments in Paris. All the time, her love grows as she gives birth to her five children and develops a firm, lasting and respectful friendship with her mother and sister-in-laws. Her privileged position allows her to attend Europe’s great gatherings of royal weddings and funerals. After 12 years of marriage, a friend’s phone call to her while she is staying in New York advises that her husband has taken a second wife. At this point
her life takes another unexpected turn as she successfully fights to stay with her children. Today Marianne lives in the United States, she is the matriarch of five children, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. She calls her children global citizens, who move easily between the two worlds and she promotes international cultural understanding. While she acknowledges the limitations on Saudi Arabian women. She has said: “Women there have rights - of course they do. They also have great power and they exercise it behind the scenes, many running the administration of very large families.” In 1990 in a newspaper interview she added: “While many Western women look on the veiled Muslim women with pity. “If you want the truth, Saudi women feel sorry for Western women. They see beauty contests and girlie magazines in the West, and they say, ‘Women in your world are sex objects.’ To them it’s abhorrent.” Review by Gail Forrer

ABOUT ATKINS: the original low-carb eating approach, the Atkins program has been scientifically reformulated as the Atkins Nutritional Approach – an easy to follow, flexible four-phased program that helps followers build a diet around whole foods rich in vitamins and ‘good carbohydrates’ including low sugar fruits, leafy green vegetables, whole grains, nuts, legumes, dairy, good fats and protein (fish, poultry, red meat and tofu) – while at the same time eliminating highly processed carbs such as white flour (white bread, white pasta) and sugar.
Love affair with food shines through recipes Autumn Harvest – recipes by Maggie Beer Lantern, an imprint of Penguin Books MAGGIE Beer’s love of food is infectious. The passionate foodie first shared her joy in 2007 with the original Maggie’s Harvest edition. It has since evolved into four seasonal paperbacks – Harvest Winter, Spring, Summer and now this edition Autumn. In her signature detailed and descriptive style, you will find a collection of more than 90 of Maggie’s autumn recipes. She writes evocatively of some her favourite ingredients including crabapples, guinea fowls, quinces, walnuts and partridge. This goes beyond a retail outlet and often traces sources back to the farm, the growing, harvesting and finally the making of a beautiful recipe and the dinner party where it was enjoyed. Former Coast restaurateur Christine Perkin followed the Fig and Walnut Tart recipe and delivered a memorable dessert. Maggie said it is one her most requested desserts – “which is almost embar-
rassingly simple.” Christine agreed it was a pleasantly easy creation. “Firstly, I cooked small tarts which came out crispy and then I made the larger one which was beautifully moist. “I thought it would be much sweeter, but it came out quite lovely with an unusual texture.” The book takes you back to the roots of food. It is a simple, yet complex work from a committed lover of food. Her own words best purvey the tantalising zeal that runs throughout the book: “My passion for food has given me so much in life – a sense of purpose, a delicious anticipation of each new day and gifts of much deeper kind than financial,” she said. Premier applauds Dreamworld’s multi-million dollar Tiger Island revamp PREMIER Annastacia Palaszczuk said the multi-million dollar redevelopment of Dreamworld’s Tiger Island – including a massive new stadium and themed shopping and dining outlets - will create 80 new jobs during construction. Ms Palaszczuk said Dreamworld has marked many important milestones during its 34 years as tourist magnet for the Gold Coast and now work on another pace-setting attraction is starting. “Dreamworld already has a 1200 strong workforce during peak times, and is one of the biggest employers on the Gold
Coast,” Ms Palaszczuk said. “This new development will create 80 more jobs, underlining Dreamworld’s confidence in Queensland’s economy and in particular, the tourism sector.” After turning the first sod at the redevelopment, the Premier said the plans are very impressive. “A covered stadium for 500 people is a big plus, and will be a huge drawcard for Dreamworld’s 1.8 million guests per year,” she said. “Strategically placed windows will allow guests to safely come face-to-face with a tiger, while expanded facilities like splash
pools will ensure the stars of the show are well looked after.” The Premier said the redevelopment of Tiger Island is another shot in the arm for Queensland tourism especially in the lead-up to and including the Commonwealth Games. “The Gold Coast has long been home to Australia’s premier theme parks, which are crucial to attracting millions of tourists each year. “And while the private sector continues to invest, we will work with airline partners to secure more flights in and out Gold Coast and Queensland.”

The festival runs from March 4 to 20, with more than 50 events in locations throughout the Gold Coast and hundreds of artists. Organisers say Bleach this month will push the boundaries of what is physically, creatively and logistically possible as this much-loved multi-arts festival launches its most audacious and visionary program in its fiveyear history. The first two weeks of Bleach finished on a high note, with huge crowds attending all events across the Gold Coast. Young at Heart Film Festival reveals 2016 Program
AUSTRALIA’S only film festival programmed for film lovers aged 60 and up, Young at Heart, has revealed a stellar program that will roll out in April to Palace Cinemas across Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and for the first time in 2016, Brisbane. For its 11th incarnation, the Young at Heart program will include ten new feature films, a selection of new Australian short films starring seniors, special events, filmmaker Q&As, a digital print of the 1951 classic A Streetcar Named Desire and the Foxtel Movies Audience Award where filmgoers vote for Best Film. Festival director Mathieu Ravier says, “This year’s program takes a particular look at the modern family, celebrating the unconventional, complex and ever-changing relationships that bind us together.” Exploring shifting family dynamics are the dramas Louder Than Bombs starring Isabelle Huppert, Jesse Eisenberg and Gabriel Byrne; Fathers and Daughters with Russell Crowe, Amanda Seyfried
and Jane Fonda; and Mia Madre, from Italian master Nanni Moretti and starring Margherita Buy and John Turturro. Relationships are also the subject of Grandma, a sharply observed comedy starring the inimitable Lilly Tomlin as a strongwilled lesbian poet; and the bittersweet Australian comedy, A Month Of SunDays starring An-

genius Srinivasa Ramanujan, The Man Who Knew Infinity; and the documentaries, Seymour: An Introduction directed by Ethan Hawke, as well as Harry and Snowman which recounts the extraordinary friendship between a man and his horse. Celebrating the contribution of senior Australians to film culture will be the Relay Service Short Film Awards, a showcase of the best new Australian short films featuring seniors in lead roles, that will tour to over 80 regional towns from April 1 to 17. The Best Senior Actor award will be determined by a jury of industry professionals including entertainer Warren Kermond and actress Vola Vandere.
