Best wishes for Christmas MERRY Christmas Brisbane readers. The December edition of a monthly publication is always a joy to work on, it’s a little more relaxed, a lot more colourful and there’s a festive spirit in the air. I love the beginning of a Queensland summer, the challenge of getting up early enough to beat the heat for a morning walk, the expectation of a sweltering clear blue day, and the knowledge that by afternoon, all that heat will gather up and transform into rumbling thunder, low hanging black clouds and

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK finally a noisy storm with a dazzling light show. That’s a Queensland summer for you - hot and wet, long, slow summer days broken up with swift slashes of wild weather. During this period the evenings can be the best time to go out and there are plenty of Christmas events to attend I was one of the thousands to turn up to the City
Council Christmas tree lighting last week, it was a great event that gave me a chance to stroll through the Mall and check out the impressive Christmas decorations. I couldn’t resist the front page pic of Qld Government House that also lights up for its annual public showing. Late November, I attended the Queensland State Library launch of the Peace and Quiet show, a thoughtful project that follows on from the WWI show – again it’s a great opportunity to share launch pictures (P6–7). You can also see
pictures of AIR (the Association of Independent Retirees) members who attended last month’s national conference (below). Journalist Jim Bowden has provided a good read with local profiles and thanks to all the contributions from our readers we have a covered a diverse range of Brisbane stories. It’s also time to say thanks to the business people who have chosen to advertise with us. We appreciate all of your support and may you all have happy and safe Christmas. – Gail Forrer

THE annual general meeting of the Association of Independent Retirees (AIR) was held in Brisbane last month, with associated meetings of the board, its sub-committees and a “mini conference” hosted by the Queensland division. The mini conference comprised two very informative sessions: the first on financial issues with Noel Whittaker AM as the guest
speaker; and the second on aged care services with a panel of presenters from Australian Aged Care Services. The interactive sessions were very well attended and received. The Queensland division, Helen Sava and the conference organising committee are commended and congratulated on this very successful initiative.

“YOU’VE got to keep the spark plugs clear, the carburettor humming and the fuel clean,” insists sharpminded and very healthy David Francis, who at 83 is an enthusiast of Tai chi, bowls, golf and long walks. David wasn’t talking about his red 1950 MG TD Roadster, one of the collection of vintage MG and Mercedes Benz cars he keeps in immaculate condition. Rather, he was referring to the care of the human body and how it should perform in its senior years. David, a former Ansett pilot who lives at Clayfield, has three brothers and a sister ranging in ages from 79 to 90 – “All of them as fit as fleas,” he says. Apart from obvious good genes, he attributes this good health to his father’s insistence on eating wholesome “clean” food. “We were brought up on a dairy farm in the Brisbane Valley where the Brisbane River starts its long flow to Moreton Bay,” David said. “We were raised on chemical-free farm produce and
the freshest of Illawarra milk. Dad used to repeat, ‘I eat to live, not live to eat’. David said good, hard work on the farm after school contributed to an ongoing devotion to physical fitness throughout his life. “You’ve got to keep your joints and muscles moving, always, or you’ll break down like an old car in a wrecking yard,” he said. “Some reckon Tai chi is sissy stuff, but I look fitter than they do.” David retired from flying in 1990 after piloting iconic turboprop planes such as DC3s, DC4s, DC6s and the Dutch-designed Fokker Friendships, flying all over Australia, New Zealand and to the US and Britain. “And the Ansett and TAA hostesses were hostesses in those days, if you know what I mean,” he said. He misses his late wife Chally very much. “We were married in 1960 and she died in 2010. I think about her all the time. We were one and adored each other,” David said.
David Francis – all tuned up for a long life.
After the loss, David stopped going to vintage car rallies. “We went together and I couldn’t do it without Chally. But you know, I’ve just got talking with the Riley and MG Motor Club at Samford and I’m ready to give it a go again,” he said. David has three veteran cars, all registered – the 1950 MG TD, a 1963 MGB Mark II he bought 20 years ago, and a 2000 Mercedes Cabriolet CLK. He loves to drive them with the wind in his hair around the suburbs and to organic markets. He has taken his MGB as far as Melbourne. He learnt to fly when he was 18 during six months of national service. “I was lucky. Ten of us out of 200 became pilots,” he said. David has two sons – one a pilot with Virgin in Brisbane, the other a psychologist in Sydney – and nine grandchildren. “My daughter has just collaborated on an animated book for children, writing the prose. “We’re all very close,” he said.

The Best Christmas Gift Ever “Usually for Christmas, my children buy me towels or pillows and once even a basket for the cat. Last year, after a wonderful Christmas lunch in the park with my family, we came home and I found that for a Christmas gift my son had organised the replacement of my old toilet seat with an electronic Bidet toilet seat. I had seen them advertised on TV and thought what a great idea. I was absolutely shocked and thrilled to find I now have one on my toilet.” My daughter explained that she had recently purchased one from The BIDET SHOP® herself and found her husband and children loved it so much they decided to buy one for me as a Christmas gift.
After two weeks of having my new Bidet, I wondered how I had ever survived previously without it. All I have to do is sit down on my nice warm seat and go to the loo, and once I am finished I simply press a button and I get a warm water wash and a gentle stream of warm air dry. Now almost a year later, it has changed my life, I have saved a fortune in toilet paper and, I see going to the toilet as a time of luxury. It is the best Christmas gift I have ever received!
Do you have difficulty going to the toilet? With just the push of a button... This Bidet toilet seat will clean you with warm water and then dry you with a gentle stream of warm air.

Jim has led a Country Life And he still has a story or two to tell
MEMORIES of sloshing through snow and rain as a schoolboy in Scotland and riding a stockhorse in the middle of summer on rugged Glenhaughton Station at Taroom in central Queensland were two extremes that came quickly to mind for Jim Bowden when he was asked to recall some of the stories in Kiddies Korner, a column he wrote in the 1950s and early 1960s. As a wet-behind-the ears Welsh-born cadet reporter at Queensland Country Life, Jim was given his first assignment in 1957 – reporting on livestock sales at Cannon Hill. A year later, his editor made him a columnist – a lowly one perhaps, preparing short stories, puzzles and poems as Cousin Jim for a growing band of young readers all over country Queensland. “This was just such a wonderful time,” Jim said. “I made friends with scores of outback kids who wrote regularly. A published let-
ter earned a five shillings postal order.” Jim still has most of those columns pasted in a frayed book of clippings that also contains a lot of articles he wrote over his 30 years with Country Life. He went on to become chief of staff, production manager and associate editor at the paper, and in the 1980s established his own publishing and PR business. Still writing, Jim contributes regularly to Seniors Newspaper. Now he is happy to have those animal verses he wrote every week published – Katie Kangaroo, Percy Platypus, Elmer Emu and Bertie Bandicoot among them. Cousin Jim’s Bush Rhymes for Younger Minds carries a unique message, in verse, to children about the values of good health, good behaviour, a good education, respect for family and elders and the under-privileged and those who may not have the same advantages as themselves.
These stories are told through the antics of a colourful collection of bush animals, wonderfully illustrated by Brisbane artist John Flitcroft. Just recently, three bush baby boomers who wrote to Jim’s column in 1958 recalled the enjoyment of reading the “weekly odes” when they were 9, 15 and 11 respectively – one a cattle producer west of Bowen, now 70, the others retired on the Sunshine Coast and in the NSW Northern Rivers. Each received a five shilling postal note for their letters. The book is also unique in another respect – it includes an educational illustrated glossary of facts about the Australian bush creatures featured – their origins, habits and habitats. The book will support the Royal Queensland Bush Children’s Health Scheme (BUSHkids), a non-government, non-profit community organisation which offers a range of free allied

Golf keeps you young
Arthur swears golf’s good for the circulation and he should know
GREAT TIMES: Arthur Starkey (left) and golf buddies Gary Lynch and Rod Searle with a framed photo of Australian golfing great Peter Senior.
❝
The Greg Norman boom was just about to start and they were great days for golf... – Arthur Starkey
GOLF’S good for the circulation, and Arthur Starkey, 80, knows all about circulation – and golf. A keen sportsman all his life – cricket was his first love – Arthur took up golf seriously when he retired more than 20 years ago as circulation manager for publishers such as the Packer family and Gordon & Gotch. Now, on any Wednesday around 6.30am, you’ll find him with his pals at his beloved Keperra Country Golf Club where he started as a caddy in 1947. “I was 12 and you’d sit in the pro shop with your mates and usually get a job caddying for a lady golfer,” recalled Arthur. “You’d carry the bag around and get paid sixpence and that was enough to get into the club house where you could buy a hamburger from the kitchen.” Arthur came in after 18 holes at Keperra and we were introduced on the putting green.
“Seniors Newspaper? What about Peter Senior,” exclaimed the sinewy senior from Gordon Park who says he has many years of golf left in him. He was praising the Australian professional’s recent historic victory at Huntingdale in Melbourne where aged 56 Peter Senior became the oldest ever winner of the Australian Masters. “He’s an evergreen,” Arthur Starkey said. “Peter and his brother Geoff started their amateur careers at Keperra. I remember I was on the management committee when someone said we should keep an eye on this little snowy-haired kid who could do the course in par. “He was knee-high to a grasshopper and we scoffed at the claim. But sure enough the kid parred the course, many times.” Arthur said he was also excited to hear that South African golfer Gary Player, one of the most revered and loved champions, had com-
peted in the Emirates Australian Open in Sydney last month, aged 80. Arthur said amateur golf was popular through the 1950s and ‘60s; hundreds of people turned out to watch pennants matches between Brisbane clubs. “My favourite player was Jack Coogan. I remember him coming back from an Eisenhower Cup in America and telling us about a young player he’d seen called Jack Nicklaus. About 10 years later, Nicklaus came to Keperra as the world’s top golfer when he played an exhibition match against Gary Player. “The place was jumping, I don’t know how many thousand people were there. The Greg Norman boom was just about to start and they were great days for golf.” Arthur says Gary Player was one of the good guys, a gentleman. “He came out for a junior classic at the Pacific Club, Carindale. I was on the Queensland Golf Union
executive then and Gary gave the most inspiring and memorable speech to young golfers that I have ever heard.” As a strapping fast bowler in his youth, Arthur Starkey’s first A grade match was for the QCA Colts team captained by the legendary Billie Brown. After an injury ended his cricketing career at 26, Arthur concentrated on golf and played pennants for Keperra. He can claim 11 holes-in-one at the course. His involvement extended to lengthy service for the Brisbane District Golf Association, for 25 years, and the Queensland Golf Union for 20 years. A former BDGA president, he was honoured with life membership of that body. He is also a life member of Keperra Golf and Country Club. Arthur says a day on the links once a week will give your heart and lungs a good workout. It also improves blood circulation and strengthens the knees.

EXPLORE personal, social and political ideas of peace at Peace and Quiet, State Library of Queensland’s latest exhibition. Peace and Quiet is a community exhibition led by artists Elizabeth Woods and Kevin Leong, that collects the thoughts and gestures of contemporary Queenslanders at peacetime, against the backdrop of growing global political conflict. Minister for Science and Innovation Leeanne Enoch said the exhibition had been created in collaboration with the community, with the project striking a chord with people from all walks of life. “There has been a great deal of interest and enthusiasm from the community, with many people contributing ideas and artwork to this exhibition,” Ms Enoch said. “The wonderful part of this approach is that it allows the library to create a genuine exhibition that docu-

Opinion MR BRITTENDEN seeks the advancement of Australian Eastern Standard Time by 30 minutes on a permanent basis and the abandonment of DST on the east coast of Australia. He said it was a question that has never been asked before and the Queensland State Attorney-General has challenged him to collect a meaningful reaction from the people of Queensland. Please send your comments to: Editor@seniorsnews paper.com.au. “DID you know there is a sector of the eastern seaboard between Rockhampton in the north and Wollongong in the south which has never been part of any standard time zone in Australia since universal time zones were adopted by our forefathers in 1892? Between 10–11 million people (43% of our population) presently live in this sector. In an attempt to correct
DAYLIGHT SAVING PERSPECTIVE this anomaly, a rather illconceived and confusing practice was introduced into the national landscape in October 1971 – the concept became known as Summer Time in state legislation. It has continued in some eastern states and the ACT ever since. Clocks were adjusted by 60 minutes (an over-kill by 30 minutes) every six months or so. The practice was also known as daylight saving time (DST) – defined in an article by Mike Corones [Reuters, November 26, 2014] as “the greatest continuing fraud ever perpetuated on the American people”. It is not unreasonable to refer to DST in Australia in the same terms. Geographic factors mean that not all eastern states can justifiably advance

Tasmania amend their respective legislation so that standard time in each of those legislatures is 10.5 hours in advance of GMT/ UTC. Summer Time/ DST on the eastern seaboard becomes a thing of the past. Australia reverts to three time zones on a permanent basis. The benefits to the national economy would be considerable. All clocks on the eastern seaboard would be synchronised year-round – a much better way of carrying on business between the major states – which encompasses 80% of the nation’s population. The six-monthly adjusting of clocks would cease. To implement this proposal the following needs to be done: the premiers and the chief minister on the to adjust to sharp increases in these areas,” he said. “As part of a complete package, everything should be on that table. For example, stamp duties might be a bonanza for state governments but
eastern seaboard need to agree that these changes would benefit the state and national economies. Relevant legislation in the eastern states and the ACT needs to be amended. I have asked my federal members to convince our PM that he should prevail upon the relevant state leaders to agree to have their legislation amended as soon as possible, either directly, or via a COAG resolution. The necessary legislation would then be in place so that, at 2am on Sunday, October 2, 2016, or prior if thought appropriate, all clocks in Queensland, NSW, the ACT, Victoria and Tasmania would be advanced by 30 minutes and never changed again. I have been researching this matter over the last four years. I have addressed numerous governing bodies. It’s about time we fixed our clocks forever. said while older Australians were some of the biggest users of GP services, health service consumption had increased across the whole population. “While health expenditure is increasing, it is driven not by an ageing population alone, as many believe, but by the increase in the scope and volume of health services,” O’Neill said. “Medicare MBS and PBS expenditure increases are caused by an increase in services across the whole population, as well as improvements in technology

GST this will bring a lot of people to their knees as they struggle to maintain their homes and pay for goods and services. If federal and state governments advocate for senior citizens to remain in their own homes for as long as possible, I doubt any protection measure for low income earners currently proposed would offset a 50% increase in daily goods
and services required to run a household, plus inflation in the years to come. I urge seniors to communicate with each other and write to their local member and to federal members of parliament expressing “no increase to GST”. – Brian Fox, Hamilton ■ Brian, see P8 for more info on senior advocacy. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
AN INTERNATIONAL VOICE The United Nations' Universal Periodic Review focusing on Australia's human rights record put forward a number of recommendations around Australia's treatment of older people including providing better access to the workforce and strengthening anti-discrimination measures. The Australian Government also made a voluntary commitment to improve the reporting of the rights of older people at the internation-

quests for a greater range of tests. “Additionally, health remains one of the most significant areas of government duplication with institutional, regulatory, corporate and professional interests contributing to higher costs and inefficiencies”. The report also found that the main users of GP services were seniors with chronic health conditions. In Australia, chronic diseases are the leading cause of illness, disability and death with arthritis, high
al level. COTA Australia Chief Executive Ian Yates said "Older Australian's would also welcome the Government taking a more active leadership role in progressing a Convention on the Rights of Older People - the most effective way to lift the rights of older people across the world." The Australian Government must respond to the Universal Periodic Review recommendations by March 2016.
Speaking out IT’S time for seniors to speak out and get serious about the proposed 50% increase in the GST! I was told many years ago, “Where their is smoke there is fire”, and when politicians start talking about only a 5% increase in the GST it’s time for seniors, pensioners and small income earners to unite with a resounding answer, “No”. You see a 5% increase is in fact a 50% GST increase from 10% to 15%. In 2000, GST commenced at 10% and without us realising it inflation in the years between 2000–15 increased our contribution by over 40%.
God help us in, say, five years if we get clobbered with a 15% GST, which we are told is “on the table”. Many people I have spoken to naively believe they will only be required to pay a 5% increase on the existing 10%. They fail to understand GST tax could go up by a whopping 50% if it is approved. However with a 50% increase and a broader base

Keep your cool this Christmas ... and look out for neigbours and friends, too
Ways to beat the heat and stay safe SUMMER is here, temperatures are rising and Queenslanders are encouraged to look out for their elderly relatives, friends and neighbours this festive season. Senior citizens are at risk of dehydration and severe heat stress as record-breaking temperatures arrive earlier than normal, reaching 40-plus deg. across the state. Hot weather is dangerous, and seniors are particularly prone to its threat. Heat
stroke and heat exhaustion are a real problem. In fact, a recent survey found 40% of heat-related fatalities were among people over 65. Here are some guidelines: • Drink plenty of liquids. Dehydration is the root of many heat-related health problems. Drink plenty of water or juice, even if you’re not thirsty. But remember to avoid alcoholic or caffeinated drinks, as they can actually contribute to dehydration.
Page 10 - Brisbane Seniors - December 2015

• Wear appropriate clothes. An old Swedish saying says, “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes.” When it’s hot out, wear light-coloured, lightweight, loose-fitting clothes and a widebrimmed hat. • Stay indoors during midday hours. During periods of extreme heat, the best time to run errands or be outdoors is before 10am or
after 6pm, when the temperature tends to be cooler. • Take it easy. Avoid exercise and strenuous activity, particularly outdoors, when it’s very hot. • Watch the heat index. When there’s a lot of moisture in their air (high humidity), the body’s ability to cool itself through sweating is impaired. The heat index factors humidity and temperature to ap-
proximate how the weather really feels. The current heat index can be found on all popular weather websites, and is also usually announced on local TV and radio weather reports during periods of warm weather. • Seek air-conditioned environments. Seniors whose houses aren’t air-conditioned should consider finding an air-conditioned
place to spend time during extreme heat. Shopping centres, the library or movie theatres are all popular options. • Know the warning signs of heat-related illness. Dizziness, nausea, headache, rapid heartbeat, chest pain, fainting, breathing problems and disorientation are all warning signs and help should be sought immediately.

the year, and others have found that 25km is their challenge. Regardless of the distance we value our riders taking on a challenge; during October our two Seniors rode a combined 700km in the Great Cycle Challenge. The final aim of Riders with Pace is to educate the public and to show that life can be full and rewarding with a pacemaker. You know life is pretty full when you’re out there training on those crisp winter mornings, and there is not much more rewarding than helping other people. New riders of any capability are most welcome – if you’ve got the pacemaker you can always buy the bicycle. Your heart may have electrical problems, but it just needs to be in the right place. Ben Munford inaugural Qld Digital Champion EIGHT Mile Plains resident Ben Munford was recently recognised by the Honourable Leeanne Enoch, Minister for Housing and Public Works and Minister for Science and Innovation, as an inaugural Queensland Digital Champion at the launch of the Advance Queensland Community Digital Champions Program. The program aims to encourage Queenslanders to explore and enjoy the benefits of the digital age, through the stories and activities of inspirational champions. Ben is a founding father of Brisbane Seniors OnLine, a unique volunteer organisation which started in 2001 and teaches computing to over 50s in the greater Brisbane area, in their homes on their own computers. He served as President for a number of years and is an Honorary Life Member of

the organisation. He is still active as a Hub oordinator and mentor. “My first contact with personal computers was the Apple 11E back in the early 1980s when I used the technology for simple data correlation in criminal investigation work” Ben told us. In 1997, He retired from the Hong Kong police force and migrated to Brisbane, where he has since put his leadership and computer skills to excellent use as a volunteer with BSOL.
Since joining the organisation, Ben has helped over 200 seniors gain more confidence on their computers, tablets and smart phones. He also runs a two-hour technology clinic in the Carindale Library once a month. When asked what motivates him Ben replied “the smile on people’s faces when they suddenly realise that it is not that difficult to master the technology that confronts them”. One of his first students was a gen-
tleman in his 80s, who lived alone and had a spinal condition meaning he was housebound. Ben taught him how to surf the web, and use Skype to chat to his brother in Canada and send emails. His life completely changed as he began to interact with the world around him. Ben believes that it is vital that seniors are able to use the technology. “Life shouldn’t be wasted in queues at the Post Office or bank paying bills and transferring money. This is especially true if you are housebound. Supermarkets now have a home delivery service, coupled with an online ordering service.” BSOL, provides help to anyone over fifty to set up and configure computers, improve digital confidence skills and ensure they are secure online. Is a Windows 10 upgrade the best decision for you? MICROSOFT is offering free upgrades to Windows 10 for users of Windows 7, and 8.1 up until July 29, 2016. There are a couple of things to consider when deciding to upgrade from Windows 7. While operating system upgrades are no longer available, security updates will still be issued until January 2020. For Windows 8 users, Windows 10 is easier to use with a return of a start button. It is faster, and power management has been improved so mobile device battery life tends to be a little longer. Microsoft has also introduced its new Web Browser, Edge, which downloads web pages much faster than Internet Explorer. Two important issues to consider is the large download (3.6 Gigabytes) required to upgrade to Windows 10 and the speed of your modem. Those who have
a 3G or 4G wireless modem may not be able to download such a large file. Brisbane Seniors OnLine can help you work through these issues to decide whether upgrading is the right decision for you. We can also help you get the best out of your new operating system by providing affordable one on one tuition in your home using your own computer. We use patient and empathetic volunteer mentors, to provide a unique service to help seniors like you learn how to get the best use of their computers, access the internet, ensure your computer is safe and much more. A small yearly fee of $40 will cover twelve months support from a BSOL volunteer mentor. There is also a nominal joining fee of $20. To find out more contact BSOL on 3210 6983 or visit www.bsol.asn.au.

community news Panel to identify housing options for older citizens A TASKFORCE of industry experts has been appointed by the Palaszczuk Government to identify affordable and independent housing options for ageing Queenslanders. Seniors Minister Coralee O’Rourke announced the appointment of the Advisory Taskforce on Residential Transition for Ageing Queenslanders in Parliament at the end of November, delivering on a key election commitment to support Queensland seniors to retain their independence. “The primary focus of the taskforce will consider the needs of older people and will aim to improve choice, affordability, fairness and independence, while reducing complexity in their transition to aged care. “The taskforce will consider and advise the State Government on options for the supply of housing, supports and other initiatives that will im-
prove choices for Queensland seniors.” Minister O’Rourke said the 11 representatives on the taskforce included industry-leading property and finance experts and high-profile leaders from the seniors sector, government and academics. The taskforce is led by independent chair Professor Laurie Buys from QUT, a social science researcher focussing on active ageing. Housing and Public Works Minister Leeanne Enoch said the taskforce’s work would build on what the government was already putting in place regarding Queenslanders’ transition to retirement. The number of Queenslanders aged 65 and over is expected to increase from 429,000 to 1 .4 million in the 25 years to 2036. The taskforce will report with advice and recommendations to the Palaszczuk Government by August 31, 2016.

A KEY commitment for the Palaszczuk Government was to establish an Advisory Taskforce on the Residential Transition for Ageing Queenslanders, and in October, I was pleased to announce this taskforce had been appointed. transition to aged care. This includes selling the family home, transitioning to retirement villages and remaining close to loved ones. We understand that this issue is important, especially around Christmas time, and I look forward to giving you an update on their findings in the future. Christmas is an exciting time, but it can also be very stressful for Queenslanders who are stretching their budgets to enjoy some of the holiday cheer. The expense of buying gifts, preparing for Christmas lunch and organising festivities can add up quickly As a Government, we understand the impact that cost of living pressures can have on older Queenslanders. Which is why this Christmas, we are encouraging seniors to take full advantage of the savings on offer through the Seniors Business Discount Scheme. The scheme is available to
Queensland Seniors aged 60 and over, and offers discounts at more than 6200 participating businesses. Savings can be nabbed from goods and services to accommodation and holiday attractions. Some discounts are even extended

The fee hike blatantly penalises those who do not have the internet unreasonable to expect a paper bill in the post without having to be charged $3.20? “For folk who are working, it’s less of an issue but if you’re reliant on a low income, a few dollars really adds up.” O’Neill said National Seniors was concerned about a wider trend of essential services going online, leaving some members of the community at a disadvantage. “As more companies and government services switch to online services, seniors are most at risk of being left behind in the digital divide.” With 200,000 members Australia-wide, National Seniors is the consumer lobby for the over-50s. OLDER Australians who do not use the internet are being unfairly penalised by telco giant Telstra as it announced monthly paper bill charges would increase from $2 to $3.20. National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill said the increase was discriminatory toward vulnerable sections of the community, particularly older Australians. “The fee hike blatantly penalises those who do not have the internet or do not know how to use the internet, and those who prefer to do business the traditional way by receiving their bills on paper and paying them in person,” O’Neill said. “In isolation, such a small charge would not be difficult to absorb but these administrative charges and surcharges are becoming increasingly common on a whole range of services.” O’Neill said while pensioners and health care card holders were exempt from the increase, the surcharge shouldn’t be there in the first place. “Customer service standards are dropping – is it

Needing to keep up
I AM a senior. Well past retirement age. But I still work. Full-time. If I gave this any thought, which I never have until now, I’d be proud of myself and my work record. As it is, I just keep working, grateful my management hasn’t noticed I should have packed my belongings in a cardboard box long ago, left my desk, and headed out the door. Until someone does notice – and you can bet it will be a young whipper-snipper just out of university who suddenly looks my way with rolling eyes and whispers “who is that old sheila sitting in the corner?” – I’ll keep on working. Working as long as you are able to and your employer lets you has to be good for you, no? My hero, Singapore’s founding father Lee Kuan Yew, worked until the day he died at 91. He was having a Mandarin lesson that very night. Lee Kuan Yew is a commendable example of so much that is right about continuing to work until you die ... but to me. A company can’t fire me now for being past a certain
"Snapshots of life" A fun and frivolous look at life with Ann Rickard
A company can’t fire me now for being past a certain age. age – at least not in this country – and this is a very good thing. But the older working person needs to keep up, because it is a certainty she will be working with youthful lithe things and she doesn’t want to appear “elderly”. Obviously keeping up appearances plays an important role, and fashion and grooming is a big part of it (and in my case taking
shameless advantage of every cosmetic enhancement available as long as it does not cost more than $50 or involve a scalpel). Even if she is groomed and cosmetically enhanced, even though she may be young at heart and of mind, there are still things the older worker needs to be aware of to keep up appearances, especially if her job entails sitting in front of a computer as so many jobs do now. It is the act of getting up off a chair after a sitting period of two or more hours. It’s the noises you make during the rise from a chair that alerts fellow workers to your age via the ache of your back, the pain of your buttocks, the tightness of your calves. If you don’t care about work colleagues hearing your unflattering chair-ascending groans or noticing your shuffle once out of the chair and on your way to the coffee, then congratulations to you. But I do mind, and I’ve been covering up for a few years now. I’m pretty certain I’ve fooled everyone. ann.rickard@scnews.com .au

YOU may have heard those old adages, “When the body becomes stiff and inflexible, so does the mind” and “You are as young as your spine”. As we move into our more senior years, this can be interpreted in many ways. Apart from perhaps not being able to touch our toes as we once could, we may find ourselves becoming less resilient, more fixed, perhaps resistant to change or experiencing difficulties in accepting new ideas. The regular practice of yoga helps create a flexible body and mind, and assists us in keeping old age at bay, maintaining optimum health and removing stiffness and inertia in the body. Maintaining a healthy and flexible spine is a key aspect of yoga. The spine is designed to move in many directions, so twists and
backward and forward bends are all incorporated into a well-rounded yoga practice. Our body’s nervous system has a direct relationship with the spine, so a healthy spine leads to a healthy nervous system, which supports a healthy and active

Each yoga pose moves the varying joints in the body through a full range of movement, stretching, strengthening and opening each part of the body, which results in an increase of energy and a renewed enthusiasm for life. We often make assumptions about what others may be thinking or doing, then find out later that the situation wasn’t what we thought it was. This can lead to unnecessary conflict and stress. Here is a true story, told to me by a financial planner about mistaken assumptions: One of his clients, who was close to retirement, travelled a lot in his work and was looking forward to spending more time at home, gardening and getting involved in his local community. His wife, who had spent a lot of time at home, was looking forward to going on overseas trips like their friends, when he retired. When they were both in his office one day to discuss financial matters, the husband mentioned he was looking forward to no more travel when he retired, which caused a heated argument between the couple. Each had assumed that the other person wanted the same thing they did,
‘Inspiring and Retiring’. A column by Eva Bennett
so hadn’t discussed it. So how could this argument have been avoided? By having some clear communication and asking questions of each other, listening to each other about their thoughts about what to do in retirement. The way to keep yourself from making mistaken assumptions is to ask questions. If you don’t understand, ask, until you are clear about the matter. A recent survey showed that 35% of couples divorce because of poor communication and 37% divorce because of financial issues. Imagine the ‘volcanic erup-
tion’ that can take place when poor communication is about money issues. Here is an exercise you can do with the other person in your life, to develop the habit of having clear communication and reducing the conflict. Each person writes down how they want a particular situation to be, eg. what to do in retirement, how to spend Christmas, whether to downsize, whether to buy a new caravan – the list is endless. When you have each completed your list, listen carefully to each other’s ‘wants’ and then ask questions to get clear on what is being said. Do you have a better understanding of the situation? Can you and the other person resolve any issues in a peaceful way? I’d be happy to get some feedback from you, when you try this approach. Remember – ask rather than make assumptions. www.plansretirement.com.au

■ Pumicestone Passage Guests were welcomed with canapés and bubbly before being tested with a quiz about the Melbourne Cup. Amidst much hilarity , everyone gathered round to watch the big race before meeting his or her own challenge of the day “The Woorim Cup”. Paul had taped out a course on the floor tiles and supplied several animals, from which members chose to represent their horse. Men, then ladies - followed by a race between the winners. Each “jockey” picked a card from the adjudicator and moved their “horse” forward – or backwards if there was a penalty, until a winner was announced. Rosemary presented the winner – Terry Cook, with
a wooden trophy of a horse which was beautifully hand carved by club president Gerry Hurst. After a funfilled day, members left on a high note wondering…who will win the Woorim Cup next year? The club meets on the second Tuesday each month at Bribie RSL at 9.15am for 9.30am. NATIONAL SENIORS ■ Rochedale-Springwood JUST to prove that you are never too old to enjoy Santa Claus 66 members and guests took part in the final meeting November 18. The first meeting of the club was held on October 13, 1970 and was attended by 19 people. At the time, hall rental was $10 per month. An offer from members to loan the club money to purchase a set of bowls was accepted and this loan was gradually repaid. Indoor bowls were first played in the Church Of England Hall at Wellington Point on February 23, 1971 and has since moved to the Community Hall, Birkdale Rd, Wellington Point. Long-time members who attended were Eddie Victor, who joined in 1990, Derik Gilks still a playing member for 23 years, John

The sun’s natural source of ultraviolet (UV) radiation is necessary for the production of Vitamin D. Our bowlers take a balanced approach by getting enough Vitamin D while minimising skin cancer risk. The bowls low-im-

INCONTINENCE is a topic rarely spoken about but surprisingly common in our community. In fact more than 4.8 million Australians have bladder or bowel incontinence (or both), and because of the embarrassing nature of this problem, many suffer in silence. Deloitte Access Economics estimated that the cost of incontinence to the health system is expected to rise to $450 million by 2020. So what is incontinence, what causes it and most importantly what can be done about it? Incontinence is the involuntary or accidental loss of urine or faeces. Urinary incontinence is usually divided into four main categories: Stress incontinence; Urge incontinence; Overflow incontinence; and Functional incontinence. Faecal incontinence is usually caused by weak pelvic floor muscles or sphincters from either childbirth, as a result of surgery or radiation therapy, or by lower bowel problems such as chronic constipation or diarrhoea. There are a range of management options for both
"Good Medicine" with Dr Michael Gillman
urinary and faecal incontinence which begin with lifestyle interventions, pelvic floor exercises and bladder training. If however, these types of interventions are ineffective, newer treatment options such as botulinum toxin injections into the bladder and sacral nerve neuromodulation can be highly effective. Minimally invasive sling surgery has also proven to be a highly effective treatment for certain types of urinary incontinence. STEM CELL TECHNOLOGY Humans believe that ageing is inevitable – at GEN-X we disagree. NO DOUBT YOU’VE HEARD of stem cells but don’t know much about them. The rigorous debate surrounding stem cells has much to do with their proven restorative qualities evidenced in thousands of medical success stories globally. But what are they exactly? Put simply, stem cells are our body’s built-in repair system helping us to heal from injury and illness. We have about 200 different kinds of cells in our bodies that are organ specific, but stem cells are different. They’re able to change into other types of cells helping a range of organs and tissues to recover from trauma. This means that when our bone marrow releases stem cells they automatically target the damaged areas, in turn releasing growth factors to repair the tissue. For this reason stem cells are considered to be highly regenerative. In fact our own adult stem cells are the core essence to life and good health, and provide the platform for many cumulative health benefits. Did you know that from about the age of 26-27 years old the body gradually stops producing stem cells? Our body’s reserves gradually decrease, and our reduced ability to efficiently repair damaged tissue leads to aging. It’s not surprising then that medical
Stem cells are our body’s built-in repair system helping us to heal from injury and illness science today uses stem cells to enhance our general well-being with broad and proven benefits. In fact, GEN-X treatment programs are designed specifically to combat the challenges faced by reduced energy and endurance, compromised immune systems, fatigue and focus issues, poor post exercise recovery, post operative recovery, illness and injury as well as natural weight loss, muscle gain and overall health maintenance. Scientific research shows stem cell release rates from the bone marrow drops at an astonishing rate as we age. By the time we’re 65 years old, the release rate has dropped by more than 80% leaving only 20% of active stem cells circulating in the bloodstream. The good news is it’s never too late to start reversing these statistics. It’s now possible to activate our own adult stem cells with a revolutionary stem cell programme. GenX’s cutting-edge treatment programs designed by a
team of bio-chemists, scientists and health experts, provide advanced immune response, cellular repair and renewal. With a working knowledge of the unique, regenerative quality of stem cells, and with access to highly sophisticated technology, doctors today can also offer life-changing relief to patients suffering from a vast range of conditions and diseases. Using methods that stimulate adult stem cells from the bone marrow, muscle and tissue into the bloodstream, stem cells migrate to areas where they are most needed. This vital, life-sustaining process helps improve, maintain and preserve health and well-being throughout an entire lifetime. If you’d like to know and understand the benefits of stem cell treatments for your health, and improve your quality of life, give us a call today. Places are limited. At GEN-X, it is our opinion that growing older is simply a side effect of slow movements in medical science.

Age-based discounts aren’t restricted to just insuring your car By PAUL CLITHEROE, MAKING MONEY
I RECKON there’s a lot to celebrate about getting older – the joy of watching our kids grow up, having plenty of life experience to draw on, and surprisingly, valuable savings on insurance premiums. Let me explain that last point. A colleague of mine recently turned the big 5-0. It wasn’t a milestone she particularly relished, that is until her comprehensive car insurance renewal arrived. The annual premium was considerably lower than in previous years thanks to the driver turning 50. Interestingly, age-based discounts are also becoming available on life insurance.
Paul Clitheroe.
MLC Insurance, for instance, recently announced discounts on life cover with savings of up to 15% from age 45. It’s a great idea – live longer, save on insurance. In fact, from our forties onwards, life insurance plays an especially valuable role in a sensible financial plan. Between the ages of around 40 and 50 we often face significant financial responsi-
From our forties onwards, life insurance plays an especially valuable role in a sensible financial plan. – PAUL CLITHEROE wouldn’t be enough to pay out a home loan, let alone provide long-term financial security. Buying life insurance outside of super lets you tailor the policy to the needs of yourself and your family, so you can be quite sure you have adequate and appropriate protection. Directly-held life policies can also have extras like a funeral benefit.
Ratings group Canstar recently reviewed directlyheld life insurance and found ANZ and Insure Me Now offer good overall value. However, it’s a question of comparing insurers and policies to see what works best for you and your family. You can download Canstar’s life cover report from www.canstar.com.au. Or speak to your financial adviser for a review of your life insurance needs. Having complete protection can cost less than you expect. Paul Clitheroe is a founding director of financial planning firm ipac, chairman of the Australian Government Financial Literacy Board and chief commentator for Money Magazine.
Give retirees a hand, super funds told AS PEOPLE live longer, they face a greater chance of dementia and other ailments that require high levels of care, so it’s urgent they gain better access to financial products and services that help them afford a quality of life in late retirement. That was a message delivered to the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia conference in Brisbane by CEO Pauline Vamos. Ms Vamos called on super funds to do more to help their members be better prepared to deal with rising health and aged care
costs, including considering drawing on the equity in their home. “As fiscal pressures on governments increase, individuals will be under greater pressure to fund their own expenses and we will see a new generation of retirees forced to make substantial contributions for health and aged care as they reach old age,” she said. Ms Vamos launched a new research paper at the conference that forecast aged care costs will represent a $220 billion hit to the Federal Budget’s bottom line by 2055, leaving the sector

over the fairness of wealthy home owners qualifying for a government age pension. Government expenditure on aged care, as a proportion of gross domestic product, is projected to jump 0.9% this financial year to 1.7%, or $290 billion, in 2055 when today’s 30year-olds are retiring. Even if the current or future governments do not cut public funding to health and aged care, individuals will need to dig deeper into their own pockets.

a ripe target for public funding cuts. In its report, ASFA argues that one of the areas where super funds need to innovate is in the development of financial products that draw on housing equity “through mechanisms such as equity release products, downsizing or contingent loans”. For most retirees, the family home is their largest asset. The family home is being targeted as a source of capital to fund retirement income amid rising pressure on the Federal Budget and growing debate

In many cases the combined income of two people is the thing that keeps household finances ticking over. This is why it’s so important to review your life cover annually – if anything happened to either income earner, your family could be left financially skewered. Many people assume they have sufficient life insurance through their super fund. But that’s not always the case. The amount of life insurance provided by super funds is often less than $200,000. THE Assistant Treasurer, Kelly O’Dwyer, has launched an independent financial information service for older Australians at Parliament House. The National Seniors Financial Information Desk (FID), launched recently, was resurrected from the ashes of the respected National Information Centre on Retirement Investments (NICRI) which closed this year after losing government funding. At the launch, National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill said NICRI’s demise after two decades of operation had left a dangerous gap for consumers. “This information service will help older Australians navigate through an overwhelming retirement income system,” he said. “Retirement products are complex and superannuation choices are difficult for people ill-prepared for lifechanging decisions. “Unfortunately, older Australians don’t have second chances; and there is no time to recover from poor decisions or bad advice.” O’Neill acknowledged the role of ASIC’s Money Smart resource, but said consumers often needed more than an online option. “We want to speak to someone, to ask questions, to be informed and prepared for the next step”. Manned by former NICRI staff, the FID will be accessible at no cost to National Seniors members. The organisation is seeking government or philanthropic support to extend the service to all people over 50. The FID will provide independent information on superannuation, pensions, tax and other financial matters. It will not provide ‘advice’, recommend products or take commissions, bonuses or third party payments. Shadow Financial Services Minister Dr Jim Chalmers, Age Discrimination Commissioner Susan Ryan, and the Australian Bankers Association CEO Steve Munchenberg also attended the launch. People can access the Financial Information Desk on 1300 020 110 or via www.fid.org.au

Visiting the beautiful, crazy city of New York
By GAIL FORRER
A FLASH of falling yellow leaves make a beautiful carpet across the wide footpath of Riverside Drive, Manhattan. It’s the beginning of October, crisp blue skies, comfortably cool weather and a city dabbed with the colour of falling autumn leaves. I look up towards the swirl of leaves, but before I can take in the trees, my vision is caught up in the spectre of magnificent, mighty buildings reaching, pushing into the blueness. And there it is, all at once – New York – a city of nature, nurture and big ideas. The juxtaposition of so much unspoilt nature growing amidst the densest concrete jungle is the world is a sight to behold. Manhattan Island is bounded by the Hudson, East and Harlem rivers. These rivers frame a crazy, beautiful city that arguably attracts the biggest, the boldest and most wildly divergent lifestyles in the world. It’s a city where the skyline provides an understanding of its past, future and peo-

ple. Up high, the cathedralstyle facades, modern blue glass, turrets, Baroque design, Greek columns and pale green spirals pierce the heavens. It’s a showy exhibition mirroring the vision of architects, men of money and construction workers. A built environment that, since its inception, has echoed the collective imagination of an audacious tribe. Talk about having your head in the clouds – in New York, it has to be, or you miss out on the marvels of sky-high beauties. At around eight-and-a-half million, the city boasts the country’s biggest popula-
tion. Additionally, the tourism industry is booming with a record high of 56.4 million visitors in 2014. The New York City mayoral office attributed visitor numbers to: “Quality of life, low levels of crime and dynamism.” Two months ago I became one of the 56 million, after trip that took about 24 hours. I exited Brisbane airport with a couple of hours stopover in Los Angeles and arrival at JFK airport. From JFK airport, depending on the traffic, it takes a couple of hours to drive to Manhattan. flash trip past the highs and lows of urban city life. Our holiday residence was a hotel room in the perfect position of Midtown at Hotel Marrakesh. It’s a quirky, relatively cheap hotel and our room came with a great view across the streetscape of Broadway. The hotel is managed by the most hospitable of staff. Not for a moment is the
street noise a problem. My friend and I loved it – the strange, different-sounding sirens of NYPD (New York Police Department), the accent of hipster Afro Americans, and we were delighted with people who raise their voices to argue with partners, sing with mates or loudly declare a point of view. It’s New York – we’re there to see and hear it all.
Every day is an adventure – but here’s a few highlights. In the front of the magnificent facade of Museum of Natural History you are met with the words of President Theodore Roosevelt – knowledge, truth, vision. The President’s environmental values prompted the construction and focus of this mind-blowing museum. CONTINUED PAGE 33

Autumn and spring are recommended times for a Beijing visit. And why not? It’s a city that should be on everyone’s bucket list, simply because Australia’s engagement with China suggests that we need to know more… a lot more… about Chinese history, culture and customs. There’s no better place to start than fascinating Beijing. Things You Should Know There are currently no di-

If you’re looking for maximum comfort on their overnight flight, Air China’s Business Class is superb, with lie-flat beds and a Mercedes limo to meet you on arrival! You can get a free 72-hour visa on arrival. Choose a hotel that’s in between the airport and the downtown area. Why? The further you are from the

airport, the more you’ll run into traffic problems that take the shine off the whole trip. The brand new fivestar NUO Hotel has the perfect location and it will also give you an experience of Ming Dynasty style blended with a gallery of contemporary Chinese art. The dining area is a gigantic food hall with all kinds of ethnic cuisine and the basement is devoted to a gym, 25-metre pool, wellness treatment rooms and yoga space.
Next to NUO is the threestar Tangram Hotel for alternative, great value accommodation. The hotels’ concierges are extremely helpful and will organise local tours to the Great Wall (an absolute must-see) and other major attractions such as Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace and the Temple of Heaven. Getting around by subway is easy, fast, cheap and interesting … highly recommended.
Shopping for silks and antiques is fun and good value, but you’ll find luxury brand name goods more expensive than in Australia. They’re priced for the wealthy Chinese! Make sure to try authentic Peking Duck from a place not crowded with tour groups… Hua’s Restaurant is highly recommended. yourself. On the clear blue day, we gazed down from the Empire State building and marvelled at the tall piles of buildings in shapes that defied their position, and again it made us wonder how a city, so busy, could have made time and space for something as tranquil and fun as Central Park. And those who built the subway have gifted another bit of luxury for New York. It is easy and cheap to get around New York. For $31 (USA) you could travel around for a week. But you are easily brought to earth when out the blue, there are some incredible
hip-hop dancers doing their thing on the sidewalk in front you, or the notes of a random blues singers are playing just a little ahead of you.
A few highlights

The Cloisters’ collection comprises approximately 2000 works of art. *High Line: (also known as the High Line Park) is a 2.33km linear park built in Manhattan on an elevated section of a disused New York Central Railroad spur called the West Side Line. The mission statement of the American Museum of Natural History is: “To discover, interpret, and disseminate – through scientific research and education – knowledge about human cultures, the natural world, and the universe.” And while this museum tells a big story, close by, the story of Central Park is alive and well. In the middle of Manhattan, an area of 840 glorious, thriving, blooming, spacious acres provides a peaceful sanctuary for the busy New Yorker. This oblong slash of green is parted in the middle with a beautiful flowing lake. It’s home to thousands of squirrels who bounce throughout the trees. As we walk through Central Park, little somethings splatter on our heads and we realise it these tiny bushy tailed creatures breaking chestnuts above us. No matter where you go – Times Square, Wall Street, Grand Central Station – there is always a spare, quiet seat in Central Park to revive

BUDGET or BOUTIQUE
WHERE: Ho Chi Minh City WHAT: Bustling city situated in the southern part of Vietnam. Also known as Saigon. WHY: This vibrant city embodies the rhythms and energy of a rapidly developing nation widely touted as one of Asia’s next economic powerhouses.
BUDGET
EAT One of France’s gifts to its former colonial subjects was the availability and knowhow to produce fantastic breads and pastries. Ho Chi Minh City has a number of bakeries and street-corner venders sell-
ing fresh, crunchy loaves of bread on a daily basis at very reasonable prices. When accompanied by a cup of local ‘dripolator’ coffee, you have a taste sensation to start your day! SLEEP You might consider the Grand Hotel Saigon, EdenStar Saigon or the Novotel Saigon Centre. DO French inspired architecture that can be easily (and freely) accessed by going on a self-guided walking tour. Some noteworthy buildings include the Central Post Office, Notre Dame Cathedral, Saigon Opera House, Ho Chi Minh Square and the Hotel Continental. In a more modern vein, Reunification Palace and the Rex Hotel, former home to American GIs, are also worth a look. But, a note of caution - traffic in Ho Chi Minh can best be described as mad! If this is all too much, a trip to the Central Markets (Ben Thanh) is always good value.
BOUTIQUE
EAT La Villa French Restaurant (Thao Dien Ward, District 2), offers authentic French cuisine and an extensive selection of French wines. The menu includes Brittany French lobster soup. For a taste of Vietnam, visitors could try Cuc Gach Quan (Ward Tan Dinh, District 1), within the delightful setting of a French Colonial House. SLEEP Luxury hotels include the InterContinental Asiana, Sofitel Saigon Plaza, Park Hyatt Saigon, Hotel Nikko, the Hotel Majestic and Caravelle Saigon. DO For a touch of luxury, why not hire a personal driver and guide for the day.
The Rex Hotel Saigon.

proud to show off their island. The people of Norfolk Island, like Australians, love their sport. The sporting field at Kingston is home to football and cricket match-
es and is the oldest pitch in the Southern hemisphere still in use. Tennis has been played on island since the early 1900s and the club there now holds a very successful Veterans’ Tourna-
ment in April each year. This fabulous event is all about socializing and enjoying some great tennis whilst you’re at it. The tournament consists of Ladies’ Doubles, Men’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. There are four age divisions and couples who are in different age group divisions play in whichever division the younger participant is in. Why not grab your racquet and join the fun in 2016? WE at the 50+ Travel Club love to cruise and so do a large majority of the travelling Australian public. According to reports recently released by Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) a record number of Australians ventured on a cruise holiday in 2014, 4.2 per cent of the national population to be exact, that’s more than one million Australians. With the South Pacific the most popular cruise destination, with nearly 400,000 Aussie passengers choosing this destination last year. But why is cruising so popular? If you are one of the many Australians who have the cruise bug then you know why. The popular Eumundi Markets tour special is just $35 for seniors and includes three hours for browsing at the market, followed by a relaxing afternoon taking in the panorama of the coast and Blackall Ranges, a visit to Montville, a stroll through Mary Cairncross Park and the views of the Glass House Mountains. 2016 will to be another busy year for QTOUR, with

NORTH Stradbroke Island, or Straddie, as it is known by the locals, is one of the many sand islands off the coast of South-East Queensland. You’ll be spotting dolphins and whales off Point Lookout before you know it. The island is known for the sheer abundance of quality campsites. Only accessible by ferry, it’s just under an hour ride from Cleveland to Dunwich, the last place to stock up on supplies before heading off. Trans-Island Rd cuts
straight through the island, direct to the entrance of Main Beach and will take you about 15–20mins in high-range. Just the sight of the blue horizon of the ocean is enough to hit home and let you know you’re away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Letting down your tyre pressure is paramount – 18psi is a good starting point. If you like roughing it, then Main Beach is for you; it is 32km of rolling white sand skirted by deep
blue ocean. The permit conditions keep you off the sand 2 hours either side of high tide, so plan your trips up the beach accordingly. What you need to know: ■ You must have a 4WD Beach Access Permit to drive on the beach; these can be obtained online. ■ You must also have a Camping Permit and show your camping tag at all times in your campsite. Camping Permits can also be obtained online. For more, visit www.stradd iecamping.com.au/4wd.

Importance of early detection
ACCORDING to government figures 1 in 3 over 65s will fall each year in Australia. Over 70% of these falls happen in or around the home, nearly 20% result in head injury and 30% to hip/leg fractures, of all the available information there is no clear indication on how long people remain “undiscovered” following a fall. Emergency Medical Services specialises in fall detection systems and monitoring with safeTwear, the world’s smallest-smartest fall pendant, weighing only 34 grams and around the size of a matchbox this remarkable technology not only detects a fall, it also connects directly to our 24 hour monitoring centre with two-way voice com-
munication. Whether you are at home, in the garden, out for a walk or at the shops, slip, trip, fall or just push the panic button, you are connected directly with a monitoring specialist, talking with you directly through the pendant, help is quickly on the way, the built in GPS, gives them your exact location. In the event that you are rendered unconscious, we have your full medical history on file to share with responders and ensure you get the correct help in the quickest possible time. Technology that is so smart yet so simple to operate, each unit is programmed to suit the customer’s needs, all you need to know is push the button in the case that you need

The aphasia intensive therapy program is proven to positively impact on the lives of aphasia sufferers and their families. QTC’s Quartet is made up of a fabulous four for Living. Kate Wilson has been an integral part of QTC from the early days of the company, and Christine Amor will be familiar to all from her ongoing role in The Sullivans. Quartet is set in a crumbling English country estate converted into a retirement home for ageing opera singers. We witness the highs and lows of the stellar careers of these artists who refuse to put a full stop to their artistry. With the baby boomers starting to slow down, Quartet offers a glimpse into what really matters, celebrating the role of art as integral to our lives. Andrea Moor is the director of Quartet, which tours regional Queensland from February to March 2016.

QUEENSLAND Theatre Company’s Quartet is a hilarious, moving, deliciously wicked celebration of four exquisite artists, both in character and in our actors – many will remember them from countless theatre, television and stage appearances. JEWELLERY, chocolates and flowers are always a safe bet when it comes to buying gifts for the woman in your life, but if you want to really step it up a notch this year, it’s time to think outside the square. We’ve compiled a list to help you find the perfect Christmas gift for your sister, mum, girlfriend, wife and even your grandma. ■ Make-up and cosmetics – Whether the woman you’re buying for is into fishing, sports, or skydiving – never underestimate her love for makeup, even if she’s not a big wearer of it. Make-up is expensive, and women buy a lot of it. I can almost guarantee if you live with a woman, somewhere in your house their will be a dedicated draw, or two, filled with make-up and cosmetics. Sounds like a complicated task right? Trying to figure out
THE PERFECT GIFT
| for her
what brand and type she likes, what her skin tone is and her favourite shade of lipstick... Next time she’s doing her make-up, pay close attention (try not to look suspicious) to the products she uses and the colours she likes to wear. Here’s a sneaky tip: If she leaves the room for a quick second, grab your phone and take a photo of the products – so when you go shopping you have photographic evidence. Women also love anything they can indulge in, like a nice perfume or body scrubs. ■ Treat her to a day of relaxation – Women aren’t joking when they say they need their beauty sleep. And we sure do love to be pampered. What better way to tell someone you appreciate them for all that they do than give them the opportunity to take some time to unwind and relax with a gift voucher. You can choose from a
range of facials, body treatments and massages alongside other beauty services guaranteed to make anyone happy. Even better, get a voucher for two and spend the day together in relaxation bliss. Most importantly, put some effort into this year’s gift. Christmas only comes once a year and you want to show your loved ones just how important they are to you. ■ Jewellery – Okay, I know I said buying jewellery as a gift was very predictable, but there’s a way you can make it into something she was never expecting. Don’t worry I’m not talking about a proposal (of course, that would be an excellent gift), but personalise the gift with an engraving, or a locket necklace with a photo inside. Trust me, this will become her most valued and treasured piece of jewellery.

MEN ARE the hardest people in the world to shop for. They want everything but they say they want nothing. They act like they aren’t phased by whatever gift you get them, but we know deep down they’re hoping for something special. So, we have come up with a list of Christmas gift ideas perfect for the brother, father, boyfriend, husband and even your long lost cousin from Norway. ■ Fishing gear – Okay, so we can’t assume every man in the world likes to fish, but we can assume that most do. This is a safe gift idea if you know the person you’re buying for loves to get ou t on the water and spend all day waiting for fish to bite. Fishing rods for men are like shoes to women – you can never have enough. Especially if you do you research on which fishing rods/tackle are the best for certain types of fishing. At least that makes it seem like you put a lot of effort and thought into your gift. And luckily, there is no shortage of fishing equipment stores. ■ Latest tech/gaming console – If you’re looking to go all out and spend a chunk of money this Christmas, you can’t go wrong this idea. With technology and gaming consoles there is just so much to choose from for example, the Xbox, Playstation, Wii, iPad or even the brand new iPhone 6s, because we all know how much men love their gadgets. If the person you’re buying for already has one or more of these consoles or gadgets, easy fix: find out what games they have, and what genre of gaming they are into and buy them
a stack of new games. A simple Google search can tell you what the highest sought after games and gadgets on the market are, so once again, research is key. Big W, Kmart, Harvey Norman and EB Games are just a few stores you can visit to find any of these gift ideas. ■ Lots of little things – If you’re the best girlfriend, wife, sister, daughter or grandmother and you have already purchased all of these things in the past and need something new, this is the best idea for you. An easy way to make
sure you get something right with this gift is get one of everything. This is probably the most fun present to do, and definitely the present which will win Christmas gift effort of the year award. First of all get an old laundry basket, esky (or a new esky) or anything that can hold a variety of items. Fill it with old cut up newspapers, don’t worry – we won’t be mad if you have to cut this newspaper up for a great gift idea. ■ Go shopping – Little gift ideas can include, a new wallet, a pair of sunglasses, new clothing, a bottle (or two) of his favourite drink, a few console games, and some silly little things that will put a smile on his face, like old photos. If you’re still stuck for an idea, you could be putting way too much thought into the perfect gift. After all Christmas isn’t just about presents, it’s about spending the time with your loved ones and enjoying their company.
