Romance of the railway

Seniors 3

Dance aboard with Ralph and Pat ALISON HOUSTON

IF YOUR heart doesn’t feel a little lighter after you meet Spring Bluff Railway Station’s acting station master Ralph Hickey, there’s something wrong. Together with his right-hand man and fellow 86-year-old, acting lad porter Pat McGovern, he welcomes passengers off the train each year at Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers time with a song and dance to the tune of “Hey Ho, Come to the Fair”. Their aim is for people to arrive happy, and leave happier. “It’s the highlight of my year,” said Mr Hickey, who readily admits to being “a bit of an old song and dance man”. The love of music and dance, not to mention having been blessed with the gift of the blarney, may have been inherited from his Irish parents, but Mr

Hickey says he just can’t help himself. While he’s never been a professional performer, his entertaining began as a child raising funds towards the war effort for the Red Cross and other organisations during the Second World War. After the war, when everyone was jiving and jitterbugging, he became a bit of a hit with the girls, but he admits that when he was married with four kids, “they didn’t see it as high on my list of assets”. These days, he’s back entertaining and loving it – including singing and dancing at the local old people’s home. “I know all the songs they know, and I think I’m a bit of a curiosity to them that I’m still prancing and dancing at 86,” Mr Hickey said. “I’m so privileged to do what I can do. “It’s only 3.5 years till I’ll be 90, so I’m hell-bent

on squeezing as much out of life as I can.” And while he admits he may be “a bit of a fraud”, having never actually worked on the railways, his father did, and Mr Hickey has definitely been caught up by the romance of Spring Bluff Railway Station and its history, and sharing it with all the generations. As for his “partner in crime”, Mr McGovern, the retired radiographer loves talking trains with visitors, sells souvenirs and makes sure the station platform is spick and span. While he lives in Dalby, he travels to Toowoomba each year to spread the word about Spring Bluff. He says helping others is what keeps him young. You can meet both gents at Spring Bluff Railway Station from September 18-24. Find out more at springbluff.com.au.

Creativity is ageless

Judy Nunn, actor, screenwriter, author Gail Forrer

JUDY Nunn, at 71 years of age, sees her 1980s career-change from actress to novelist as rather fortuitous. It meant she never reached the point of complaining about limited screen roles for older women. Nevertheless, she agrees the range of roles available as you age is narrow but, in typical fashion, she moves beyond the moment for solutions. “We need to get more women into writing and producing and that would help change things,” she says. As for claims of “invisibility” in old age, with a smile in her deep voice she quotes crime author Ruth Rendell, who said: “I’m too famous to be invisible.” But Judy says if she’s made a trip to the supermarket dressed in trackies rather than made up and is recognised, then invisibility would have its upside.

AS AN ACTOR Judy began taking acting classes as a teenager. Shortly before her 19th birthday, she moved to Sydney to begin seriously pursuing her acting ambitions. From there, she moved to London for a successful five-year stint on BBC Radio plays and television shows. Still, who is it that Judy Nunn fans see? Ailsa, the wife of Alf on Home and Away, the actress who gave the first lesbian kiss on Australian television, the award-winning screenwriter or best-selling author of 15 books? Judy Nunn is all of these, and in 2015 her multi-faceted career was recognised when she was made a Member of the Order of Australia for her “significant service to the performing arts as a

scriptwriter and actor of stage and screen, and to literature as an author.” Judy Nunn cannot be called a quiet achiever, her audiences have always been far too big for that. Born in Perth to a family that encouraged both physical and artistic pursuits, from an early age Judy felt she was destined for a stage career. Judy is a great talker, quick to laugh, a straight-shooter unafraid to speak up for what she sees as a fair go. But she says she has changed with age: “If you didn’t change, it would be arrested development. Each decade is different – you have to grasp it and enjoy it.” She sees advantage in the gaining of wisdom, worrying less and a freedom in being less image-conscious. In November Judy Nunn’s latest book Spirit of the Ghan goes into paperback print and more books are coming.

know. Her husband Mark, the club secretary, spent about 21 months restoring his much-loved 1946 Maple Leaf Chevrolet. And it’s been a family

affair, with her two sons also involved in restorations. This year’s show will feature Ford commercial vehicles and Ferguson tractors, and anyone is welcome to display their vehicle. There are no big trophies, just recognition of the hard work that’s gone into making these vehicles what they are. And with 150 vehicles on show, from a 1929 Morris to a 1926 Dennis milk truck and a 1967 eight-wheeler Scammel through to vehicles just 30 years old, Mrs Summers said she would be very surprised if everyone didn’t find something of interest. FOR many, it’s the vehicles we grew up with, and it’s nice to see them looking shiny and new again. For others it’s the chance to see something unusual or to see where today’s automotive engineering came from. And for the kids, it’s the chance to climb aboard a tractor with those great big wheels and huge steering wheel. Whatever the attraction, you can expect up to 3000 people to get along to the Gatton Showgrounds on Saturday, September 24 for the Historic Commercial Vehicle Association (Queensland) Show. This is the 23rd annual show, the fifth in Gatton, and is the largest meet of historic trucks and vehicles in Queensland. A VISIT to the Spring Bluff Railway Station has become a tradition handed down from one generation to the next in many families. The station’s history goes back 150 years and it is surrounded by stunningly colourful, award-winning landscaped gardens.

While the gardens are open year-round, they are at their best for Toowoomba’s Carnival of Flowers, with the added bonus that you can travel there through tunnels and back aboard a diesel train from Toowoomba. There will be two return trips daily from September

18-24, departing Toowoomba at 9am and 1pm. But Sunday, September 18 is guaranteed to be the busiest of all when, from 11am to 3pm, the Jim Miller Big Band brings echoes of the 1930s-40s Glenn Miller band to life. About 1900 visitors

came by train, bus and car to enjoy the event last year. The entertainment is free and you can bring a picnic or the Spring Bluff Cafe is open every day in September. Rail tickets: $20 adults, $10 for kids 4-15 and under-4s travelling on a lap are free.

BE THRIFTY AND THRIVE NICKY NORMAN AS INDIVIDUALS, it helps to understand the demands on our environment and what we can learn now, so we can change our ways, for the benefit of future generations. Some people believe that to live in a sustainable way is to make sacrifices, to live a less comfortable life in the name of environmental sustainability. That doesn’t have to be the case and here are some ways you can leave behind a lighter footprint and a lighter budget.

ENERGISE WITH SOLAR POWER

Solar power energy from the sun can be captured in two ways, as heat energy (thermal energy) or as light energy. Photovoltaic (PV) technology, also known as solar panels, converts the sun's light energy into an electrical current. It’s an increasingly affordable option to reduce power bills. Once paid for and installed, it’s low-maintenance and can last 20 years or more and the electricity they generate is free. Solar power systems have become very

popular with Australian home owners, with more than 1.548 million rooftop systems installed across Australia (as at June 1, 2016).

HARVESTING RAINWATER

Rainwater is a natural and free source of fresh water. If you live in a rural area or on acreage, rainwater may already be part or all of your water supply. Harvesting rainwater in a tank gives you a personal supply of water to use during water restrictions and can help to reduce your water bills.

HEATING AND COOLING DESIGN

Very little energy is needed to make a well-designed house comfortable. Appropriate insulation, which is essential for a comfortable house, can create low or even no energy requirements for heating and cooling. Even for existing homes, there are many ways to reduce energy bills, improve comfort and help the environment. Gas heaters and efficient reverse cycle air conditioners, produce only one-third the greenhouse gas emissions of standard electric heaters. Wood can be an excellent fuel because it is a renewable resource if sustainably harvested.

Cheese glorious cheese CHEAP EATS, NO TRUFFLES CHRISTINE PERKINS CHEESE is becoming a very expensive and indulgent pleasure these days. Have you ever thought of making your own? It can cost a fraction of the price after the initial outlay for the utensils and ingredients and the flavour is so much better? You will be surprised how easy it is to make. I found the best way to start on the cheese making road was to start with Ricotta as it is a very easy cheese to make with ingredients you will have in your pantry. Ricotta cheese originated in Italy when it was necessary to make the most of the by-products from cheese-making. After a cheese like mozzarella was made, there were still some small, soft curds floating in the whey. These were then scooped up and ladled into baskets to be drained, then cooked again and made into ricotta cheese. Ricotta actually means “recooked” in Italian.

You can make Ricotta on its own and also when you become more adventurous you can make the Ricotta from the left over whey of other cheeses you have made. My first experience with cheese making was Camembert that took quite a while to make and wasn’t edible in the end. I think it may have been a bit ambitious for a first try so I found the local home brew shop had the best way to start and that was to buy a cheese kit (you can always ask them to order one in for you) or you can buy the kit on line as well as ingredients, source recipes and information. When your confidence is higher you can learn how to make the more complicated cheeses such as Chervè, a white, creamy cheese made from goat’s milk from your supermarket or blue cheese can be made at home, the sky is the limit. You can also add fresh herbs to your cheeses. Two web sites I found are www.cheesemaking. com.au and www.madmillie.com.au that have all you need to start. See the next page for a lovely recipe. Good luck and buon appetito!

Fresh full cream milk ricotta Ingredients ■ 2 ltrs full cream milk ■ 1 tspn salt ■ 4 tbspns cream ■ 4 tbsps white vinegar or lemon juice Step 1 - Place the milk, salt and cream in a heavy bottomed saucepan and heat until almost boiling (it needs heat to curdle properly). Then add the vinegar and stir it once or twice very gently just to distribute the vinegar (constant stirring will

result in tough, rubbery curds). Simmer for one to two minutes and then allow to sit for 10 minutes. Most of the ricotta curds will float to the top, leaving the whey at the bottom. Step 2 - Line a sieve with two layers of cheesecloth and place it over a large bowl to drain or you can use a fine sieve as the ricotta curds are quite large and creamy. Gently pour the ricotta mixture through the cheesecloth and the

whey will separate at the bottom in a clear yellow liquid and the soft and creamy ricotta will sit at the top. If you want a more solid ricotta, drain for an hour or overnight. Keeps for two to three days in the fridge in an airtight container. Bake your ricotta with lemon, thyme and grapes. Hint: Wash your saucepan and utensils immediately, otherwise it can take a bit of elbow grease to clean up.

THE

UNDERGROUND BUYING OR SELLING PROPERTY Buying Or Selling ‘Undercover’

Did you know that at any given time there are many great properties available for sale that sell before they’re advertised on the open market? Known as the ‘undercover sale’, this type of listing is becoming an increasingly popular choice by many sellers for a variety of reasons. So if you’re a buyer who doesn’t have your details listed with an agent, you may never have the opportunity to know about a property that’s got everything you’re looking for. Why Do People Sell ‘Undercover’? Some people prefer total privacy when it comes to selling their home, and this happens for a variety of reasons. Sometimes the timing to shout out to the world that they’re selling isn’t quite right. Examples include a personal family situation such as separation, bankruptcy, business insolvency and issues with neighbours. Or perhaps they simply want to test the waters and only want to sell if their agent has the right qualified buyer that is prepared to pay their asking price. If you can relate to a scenario like this, it’s good to know that it is possible to sell ‘undercover’ to avoid scrutiny from others and keep this private.

How Does It Work? Many agents secure successful sales for clients using the ‘undercover sale’ option. By cross-matching the seller’s property with their buyer database, agents actively look for as many good matches as they can find. They then contact those buyers to let them know about the property they have listed silently. It can also work the other way around. Buyers approach the agent with their specific needs and the agent then assesses all listed (both undercover and advertised) properties to find a suitable match. Either way, it’s a process of cross-matching and connecting. So whether you’re looking to buy or sell, call me to find out more about buying or selling a property undercover. If you’re selling, no one need know about it until it’s sold. And if you’re buying, list your details with me as your ideal new home may just be hiding in the wings.

Dyeing of a brow SNAPSHOTS OF LIFE ANN RICKARD ann.rickard@apn.com.au

LISTEN up ladies. And you men too. Let’s talk about eyebrows. Those things that sit on top of our eyes and used to be full and flourishing but have now diminished with age, can have a dramatic effect on our face. Accordingly to a great many beauty magazines, too thin eyebrows can add 10 years to our appearance. (We’ve all known at least one lady in our lifetime who shaves her eyebrows right off and then pencils in a think black line, haven’t we?)

These days you can’t pick up a magazine without being admonished about the state of your eyebrows. No longer is it enough to pluck and pencil as it was in our good old days, it is now necessary to attend a specialist eyebrow salon. I have had my eyebrows dyed professionally (and come away looking like Groucho Marx) but the thought of an eyebrow salon – a place dedicated solely to the eyebrow – gives me the jitters. I am happy to go to salons that will give me facials and cut my hair and fiddle with my toenails, but something about paying someone to smarten up my eyebrows makes me feel…lazy. Surely we must take

responsibility for our own eyebrows? On my last overseas trip I stormed the beauty counter in the duty free shop (as opposed to storming the liquor section which is where I usually head straight to) and sought professional eyebrow advice. I was told I must comb them, wax them, have a template made for them and once all that was done, to maintain them I should apply a special ‘moulding’ serum to set each little hair (of the few I have left up there) and only then could I fill in the tamed and compliant eyebrow with a special eyebrow powder, and then give them a final comb with a special (expensive) gadget. And I must maintain and condition my eyebrows regularly with

specialist eyebrow gel, but if run out of expensive gel, castor oil will do the trick. I have done all this and resented it. It adds another 10 minutes onto my make-up routine every morning. And the thing is, I have a long fringe which all but covers my eyebrows. What a waste. Of course the final solution to our eyebrow problems is to have them tattooed on, but really, do we want to go there? I do envy you blokes who have only to ask your barber (hair stylist, sorry) to run the buzzing machine over your bushy eyebrows when you have your hair cut. The simplicity of it. No eyebrow template for you, eh? ann.rickard@scnews. com.au

Mavis’ story... Healing a debilitating arterial ulcer A Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Case Study

M

avis is an 89-year-old lady who was referred to the Wesley Hyperbaric Centre by her vascular surgeon in a final attempt to save her leg from amputation. Mavis’s story began when she walked under a gum tree where a small branch was located. She stood on the branch and in turn, it pierced her left ankle. Her wound started to ooze and over time formed into an ulcer.

Mavis reported, “I can’t speak highly enough for everybody concerned at the Wesley Hyperbaric Centre and that’s all the doctors, all the nurses and all the new friends I have made in there. Mavis told us -“My specialist said that if they couldn’t cure my ulcer it would mean an amputation. I said to him, 'Please, never take my leg off.’”

After her hyperbaric treatments were completed Mavis received outpatient wound care on a regular basis over three months. In that time, she went from only being able to sleep in a chair due to the pain in her leg, to sleeping back in her normal bed. Mavis’s remarks were, “I have been the happiest person and everybody can see the change in me because I’m back to being myself after I’d say at least 7 months of going through extreme pain and being unable to lie down. It’s only been the last couple of months that I’ve been able to lie in bed.” During one of her visits to the WCHM, Mavis mentioned her 90th birthday was approaching and she would love to be able to spend it in the surf on the Gold Coast. The arterial ulcer to her left leg healed completely 2 weeks before her birthday and the WCHM team organised a morning at the Gold Coast where Mavis was able to enjoy seawater on her legs for the first time in years.

When she first arrived at the WCHM she was very apprehensive and had intense discussions before allowing the nurses to treat her wound. After a couple of weeks this apprehension passed and she realised that she was in good hands and that the team was focussed on ensuring that she would not lose her leg. When Mavis arrived at the Wesley Centre for Hyperbaric Medicine she had already undergone all the reasonable treatments available to improve the blood flow to her leg, but unfortunately it hadn’t improved. She had a debilitating arterial ulcer to her left leg for over six months at the time of her first review at the WCHM. Her ulcers were painful and she had significant weeping from them. She was sleeping in a chair with her leg down to help blood circulation and as a consequence her leg was quite swollen. Re-perfusion of her leg was an option but this was considered a significant risk.

Laser can repair prostate issues AS MEN get older, many will begin to notice a change in their urinary symptoms. This is usually as a result of the prostate gland slowly increasing in size. The first thing that is noticed is a slowing of the stream of urine, followed by increased urinary frequency and then having to get up during the night to pass urine. This often causes sleep disruption for the man and his partner. Other symptoms

Until recently, a rebore operation (TURP) was performed with the core of the prostate being removed by diathermy. The problems with this procedure included blood loss particularly for men on blood thinning medication. The latest addition to the treatment options is the greenlight laser. The greenlight laser consists of a 532nm light beam which is green on the light spectrum. The light from the laser is attracted to the red blood cells in the prostate and the heat from the laser beam denatures the prostate tissue and vaporises it into bubbles. Penetration of the

tissue is only to 1–2 mm and the heat also seals up any blood vessels reducing any blood loss. Men on blood-thinning medication can have this procedure and hospital stays are generally shorter with this procedure. This method of treatment has become so popular that more than 90% of “rebore surgeries” are performed with some type of laser therapy. Who would have thought that those of us who watched the light sabres in the Star Wars would see something similar being used in the operating theatres? — www.drmichael gillman.com

Some men will also experience recurrent bladder infections and rarely an episode of acute urinary retention requiring urgent catheterisation. When symptoms become bothersome or if there has been an episode of retention or infection, medical therapy is required. This begins as tablet therapy but as the prostate continues to increase with size, the tablets may lose their effectiveness and a surgical option is required.

A life-threatening toothache? THE occasional toothache due to a lost filling or broken filling may initially cause only minor inconvenience. Without prompt dental attention, this pain will become more severe, causing problems throughout the day such as eating and at night disturbing sleep. Buying painkillers to get some relief from the pain due to common dental problems is very common at any time. How long can you survive on painkillers?

Painkillers bought over-the-counter for relief from toothache should not be taken with some prescribed medicines as this combination can cause major medical problems. Some “stronger” pain-killers can also cause drowsiness and dizziness. These unexpected effects can involve any medication which may be over-the-counter, “alternative” or even a prescribed medicine. Don’t rely on pain-killers.

Minimise unexpected problems by regular dental care and make sure you have Dentist In A Box, the “no mess / no fuss” kit for common dental problems. About the size of a CD case, the handy Dentist In A Box kits easily fit into the glove-box, hiking day-pack or even your handbag. More information is available at the website www.dentistinabox. com.au or alternatively, phone 1300 THE KIT (843 548).

Seniors keep busy with U3A Groups help maintain active brains

HEARD the phrase – “I’m retired but I’ve never been busier in my life”? They have discovered the joy of activities stimulating the mind. Research shows keeping the brain active is important to help maximise continued independence. Join U3A to achieve this, whether you are lusting for languages or hysterical about history, there is something for everyone. Founded in Toulouse, France, in 1972 and in Queensland since 1986, U3A helps members to remain healthy and

Wills: things you need to know EVERYDAY MATTERS CAROLYN DEVRIES CEO of New Way Lawyers

WHEN making or updating your will, the most important decision that you will need to make is who to appoint as your executor. An executor is the person who you appoint to be responsible for carrying out the wishes in your will. When choosing an executor, it is a good

idea to also name an alternate or back up executor in case your first executor is unable to act as your behalf. When choosing an executor or alternate, consider the following ■ Do you trust them? ■ Are they confident and prepared to deal with your assets in accordance with your wishes? ■ Do they have time to do what is needed? ■ Will they make sound decisions if disputes arise over your estate? ■ Are they likely to outlive you? You can choose anyone

who is older than 18 years to become your executor, including your spouse, partner or children. An executor of your will can also be a beneficiary under your will. It’s possible to appoint two people to act as joint executors. If you are having difficulty choosing an executor, or want someone independent, you can appoint a solicitor, accountant or a person from a trustee company. This is intended as general legal information for residents of Queensland and not a substitute for individual legal advice.

THOSE annoying noises that you perceive when there is no noise, are called Tinnitus which can take the form of any sound – cicadas, jackhammers, ringing, running water or buzzing. Figures of up to 5–10% of the population are often reported, with about 2% of tinnitus sufferers reporting a severe effect on their quality of life. Once noise is removed, people can experience a tinnitus noise but, when sound is re-introduced,

our brain focusses on more important information. Over time as our hearing decreases, the perception of tinnitus increases. Even knowing tinnitus does not make your hearing worse can help sufferers. Current techniques lower the awareness of tinnitus with or without the use of technology. New smartphone apps can help sufferers improve their relaxation skills and mask tinnitus,

giving some relief. Hearing devices are now available with tinnitus masking programs that are in-built into the technology and give the flexibility of tailor made solutions to improving the effects of tinnitus. There has been little known about tinnitus let alone options to minimise it, but gone are the days where there is nothing we can do: There are now more options available. Ann Rickard discovers a relaxed pace barging IN the Southern French city of Narbonne you can stand by a section of road still intact from the day the ancient Romans built it. The Via Domitia was the first Roman road built to link Italy and Hispania. This section of the ancient road is now in a shallow pit in the town square, protected by a low wall where you can sit and take a selfie (if you are that way inclined). The historical city of Narbonne is home to the wondrous St. Just-St Pasteur Cathedral, a massive Gothic structure you could easily spend an entire day just traversing. Then, a short walk would take you to Les Halles,

NYC dining on the cheap DESPITE the exchange rate, you can eat out in New York on the cheap if you slip on a local’s shoes. Here’s a list of 10 of the best places for memorable cheap eats I discovered with Big Apple Greeter Ellen Gasnich. Big Apple Greeter Tours is a free service where locals show visitors around their city. 1. Find the best value dumplings in Chinatown at Fried Dumpling, 106 Mosco St. You can buy five fried dumplings for $1. Although the sign says they do pork buns, it’s best not to ask as the response is rarely favourable. 2. Pop into 69 Chinese Restaurant at 69 Bayard St to see the walls papered with signed $1 notes. Try Chinese comfort food classics such as Beef Cho Fun and Minced Beef with Peas and Raw Egg. The average order is under $10. 3. It’s easy to find Jing Fong Restaurant, 20 Elizabeth St, by the people queueing on the street outside. This large Cantonese restaurant

EAT, DRINK AND BE KERRY KERRY HEANEY seating 800 people draws crowds on weekends for dim sum rolled out on carts. 4. Deluxe Food Market, 79 Elizabeth St, is a long, narrow supermarket selling Chinese groceries, baked goods, sticky rice and Asian-style sandwiches. Wind your way through the crowds to find tasty marinated meats and seafood. Check for samples too. 5. Look for the sign on Canal St corner, fire hydrants painted in red, white and green and you’ll know you are in Little Italy where the street vendors sell almond biscotti and fig cookies, roasted chickpeas and honey roasted peanuts by the bag or pound. 6. A Lobster Tail, crisp puff pastry filled with cream at Ferrara Bakery and Café at 195 Grand St, along with some cannoli is

a must-try. 7. Katz’s Deli, 204 E Houston St, is where Where Harry met Sally was filmed in 1989. People queue up outside the door, and there’s a ticket system to get inside. Take a ticket and it doesn’t matter if you don’t buy anything, although you will be sorely tempted. 8. Established in 1920, Piemonte Ravioli, 190 Grand St, Co makes ravioli, tortellini and other take-out pasta, all made fresh pasta daily the old-school way. 9. La Esquina Corner Deli at 114 Kenmare St, is a casual corner taqueria hiding a dimly lit subterranean brasserie serving upmarket Mexican fare. 10. Dean & Deluca, 560 Broadway, has been providing the world’s best epicurean treats for more than 35 years. It’s a wonder just to walk through the doors but head to the back where you are sure to find samples or just try the sushi bar. Discover more New York cheap eats on eatdrink andbekerry.com.au.

Find the opulence of India

Ann Rickard upgrades from backpack to boutique in India

WHEN a mate was asked to join a much-yearned-for trip to India, his reply was simple: “I want to do India but I have to do luxury India”. We understood instantly. He’s not a young man, he’s earned the right to demand a little luxury in his travels. We researched some five and six-star Indian spots, covering palatial city hotels to magnificent mountain retreats. Backpacking is for the young, not for us. Together with booking.com we found (arguably) India’s best: ■ Suryagarh, Jaisalmer In the heart of the Rajasthani desert, not far from Jaisalmer city, lies the majestic Suryagarh. This traditional sandstone fortress has been converted into a luxury boutique hotel with a sophisticated and distinctly Rajasthani feel. All thanks to its local staff, design, cuisine and the tribal music often echoeing through its

courtyards. You really ought to explore a bit of Rajasthan during your stay, resting within the comfort of Suryagarh is tempting – while away your time in the spa or partake in yoga, chanting or meditation. ■ La Villa, Pondicherry Founded by a man born

and raised in Pondicherry, La Villa has a strong authentic claim. Its aesthetic is irresistibly chic, having perfected a rustic and modern look. Sharp lines and minimalism are artfully combined with wooden shutters and a distressed

colonial facade. Recline in a bamboo chair and lap up the genteel French feel. ■ Wildflower Hall, Shimla In the foothills of the Himalaya, Wildflower Hall is a dreamy mountain retreat. Offering a serenity hard to match elsewhere, and out-of-this-world views

–the infinity pool with an unblemished panorama is ahighlight. Found in Shimla, the hotel retains its British décor with mahogany furniture, ornate carpets and grand fireplaces. ■ The Imperial, New Delhi Despite having a

well-established reputation as one of New Delhi’s finest hotels, The Imperial does not rest on its laurels. Immaculate lawns fringed with palm trees, a garden pool and a colonnaded veranda brings a haven to this frantic city. Inside, high ceilings and marble floors add tranquillity. Guests can dine in a number of world-class restaurants and even shop in the in-house Chanel boutique. ■ The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Mumbai The Taj Mahal Palace Mumbai is an eternal favourite for good reason. The staff exude the warmth of Indian hospitality and execute everything to perfection. The palace is brimming with history, charm and character, having opened in 1903 after pioneer industrialist Jamsetjee Tata commissioned it out of love for Mumbai. ■ The Oberoi Grand, Kolkata Kolkata, home of the Oberoi Grand, is a sumptuous sanctuary that surpasses expectations. The staff here have service down to a fine art.

MASTER storyteller Judy Nunn has now sold more than one million books worldwide. In this spellbinding No.1 bestseller, she takes us on a breathtaking journey deep into the red heart of Australia. It is 2001 and, as the world charges into the new millennium, a century-old dream is about to be realised in the Red Centre of Australia: the completion of the mighty Ghan railway, a long-lived vision to create the “backbone of the continent”, a line which will finally link Adelaide

with the Top End. But construction of the final leg between Alice Springs and Darwin will not be without its complications, for much of the desert it will cross is Aboriginal land. Hired as a negotiator, Jessica Manning must walk a delicate line to reassure the Elders their sacred sites will be protected. Will her innate understanding of the spiritual landscape, rooted in her own Arunta heritage, win their trust? It’s not easy to keep the peace when Matthew Witherton and his survey

team are literally blasting a rail corridor through the timeless land of the Never-Never. When the paths of Jessica and Matthew cross, their respective cultures collide to reveal a mystery that demands attention. As they struggle against time to solve the puzzle, an ancient wrong is awakened and calls hauntingly across the vastness of the outback. Life

The challenge is to rearrange a crossword which has been broken into 25 sections. One letter has been given to get you started. Work out which 3x3 square fits in with that letter and write in the letters. You can also shade the black squares if you find it helpful. After completing the first 3x3 area, work out which square joins on to it, and continue until you have made a complete crossword.
