A third age of active fun

ARE you looking for something to do with your leisure time?

U3A offers the opportunity to attend activities with like-minded people. Maryborough U3A president Pat Dorland said they are always looking for willing tutors and new classes, so if you have something to offer, please get in touch.

“Our classes are run by volunteer tutors and presently include exercises, tai chi, yoga, history, cards, line dancing, jive and partner dancing, creative writing, musical keyboards, recorder group, sing-a-long and relaxation/wellbeing,”

she said.

“A wide range of our classes are also available to members at Hervey Bay and Howard, with whom U3A Maryborough have a reciprocal arrangement.

Cost is kept to a minimum to allow greater access for members.

Most activities are held at the Senior Citizens Hall in Alice Street where brochures and information can be obtained.

“U3A is the University of the Third Age, which is the age of active retirement, coming after the age of youth and work and homemaking and it is for retired or semi-retired persons over 50. To be a

member requires no prior learning, the emphasis is on having fun while learning or enjoying leisure pursuits,” Pat said.

“Our volunteer tutors are the backbone of the group and continue to donate their time to our members. Thanks must go to Donna Suter who had the foresight to ensure the establishment of this wonderful organisation in Maryborough over 20 years ago.

“In 2016 it is still flourishing, so come along and see if it is for you.”

Creativity is ageless Life is full for prolific author, actor and screenwriter Gail Forrer

→JUDY Nunn, at 71 years of age, sees her 1980s’ career-change from actress to novelist as rather fortuitous.

It meant she never reached the point of complaining about limited screen roles for older women. Nevertheless, she agrees the range of roles available as you age are narrow but, in typical fashion, she moves beyond the moment for solutions.

“We need to get more women into writing and producing and that would help change things,” she says.

As for claims of “invisibility” in old age, with a smile in her deep voice, she quotes crime author Ruth Rendell, who famously said: “I’m too famous to be invisible.”

But Judy says, if she’s made a quick trip to the supermarket dressed down in trackies rather than made up and is suddenly recognised, then invisibility would have its upside!

Still, who is it that Judy Nunn fans see? Ailsa, the wife of Alf on Home and Away, the actress who gave the first lesbian kiss on Australian television, the award-winning

screenwriter or bestselling author of 15 books?

Judy Nunn is all of these, and in 2015 her multi-faceted career was recognised when she was made a Member of the Order of Australia for her “significant service to the

In November Judy Nunn’s latest book Spirit of the Ghan is released in paperback print and fans of her storytelling will be pleased to know that more books are coming.

Indeed, age has certainly not wearied this wonderful Australian.

Judy Nunn’s timeline of artistic production FROM an early age Judy felt she was destined for a stage career and began taking acting classes as a teenager.

Shortly before her 19th birthday, she moved to Sydney to begin seriously pursuing her acting

ambitions. From there, she moved to London for a five-year stint, finding success in everything from Shakespeare productions to BBC Radio plays and television shows.

She arrived back home

in the 1970s, a time when the Australian identity was being explored and defined in Australian theatre and her training added to the collective creative voice.

Nunn is a screenwriter of radio and television.

She has written scripts for TV’s Neighbours and Possession. In the 1980s she decided to turn her hand to prose.

The result was two adventure novels for children, Eye in the Storm and Eye in the City, which

remain popular in Australia and Europe.

Embarking on adult fiction in the early 1990s, Judy’s three novels, The Glitter Game, Centre Stage, and Araluen, set respectively in the worlds of television, theatre, and

film, became bestsellers.

A specialist in Australian period fiction, Judy’s other books include Kal, Beneath the Southern Cross, Territory, Pacific, Heritage, Floodtide, Maralinga, Tiger Men and Elianne.

Meet the great masters

AN ATHLETE since he was a teenager, Linton Lewis loves competing and will do so again in the Maryborough Masters Games later this month.

The Maryborough Masters Games is an annual sporting event for competitors over 30 years of age, which is regarded as one of the premier and largest participation sporting events in the Wide Bay. “I joined the Maryborough Amateur Athletics Club in 1955 and at a club level I both coach and compete,” Linton said.

“When it comes to the Masters, I compete in a few events and then volunteer at events.

“I suppose it’s an incentive for fitness and I enjoy running, jumping and throwing.

The Maryborough local said he had won in some events in the Masters.

“I often win in the Masters due to being the only one in my division.

“I keep on trying to better my personal best but as you get older your achievements slowly diminish but it is still worthwhile trying.”

The games will start on September 24 and go

SPORTS Sports included in the 2016 Maryborough Masters Games were athletics, lawn bowls (Memorial Services), croquet, eight ball, Fraser Coast Runners and Walkers, Maryborough Rifle and Pistol Club (Childers Rifle Range), soccer, SSAA (target shooting at Churchill Mines Rd), swimming, Tiaro and District Sports Club cowboy and cowgirl shooters (Netherby Range), chess, and darts. through to October 9 with competitors giving it their all in 12 different categories.

Organiser Doug Walker said they expected more than 500 competitors with the addition of more sports.

“We had 496 competitors last year and they come from all over the Wide Bay, Brisbane and even Victoria,” he said.

Doug said the event was spread over three weekends to cater for busy lifestyles, finals and the public holiday.

“We understand everyone is busy, so we keep it flexible and affordable to try and keep it going.

“The committee would like to see some more support for sponsorships and donations’.

“This money would help with advertising, keep the

fees down and extras we need to run the games.”

Jim O’Donnell has been driving up from Pomona to compete in the Maryborough Masters Games for more than 30 years.

“My first race was when I was seven and I have been running and competing every year since,” he said.

“In the 40s I was running professional foot races in Victoria but I didn’t join the Masters till I was 56 years old.”

Jim always wanted to compete as an amateur and the Masters gave him the avenue.

He has competed in most of the field events in athletics and now only does a few of the jumps.

“I’ll be coming up this year - I love it - it’s a bit of fun, a trip away and meeting up with people I have met over the years,”

Jim said.

“I do a bit of exercise and training - try and keep fit.”

The 88-year-old athlete said he wasn’t the oldest competitor and had a bit of competition.

“It gives the young people something to try and beat when they join

and keep them in the sport.

“And I think I am just too silly to stop.”

Reg keeps on truckin’ Gayndah Truckie receives hall of fame award REGINALD “Reg” Brown from Gayndah has been inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame in recognition for his ongoing service to the road transport community in Australia.

The annual National Road Transport Hall of Fame Reunion in Alice Springs over the weekend saw 69 individuals from around the nation inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame.

Reg was born into a road transport family with his parents Burnie and Jan at the helm of Burnie Brown’s Sand and Gravel.

Reg’s love for trucks started at an early age and he has fond memories learning to drive in the lucerne patch at the age of ten.

He also recalls being caught by the local

policeman when he was 13 for driving a 160 Cummins.

Eventually Reg established Brown’s Citrus Transport Pty Ltd freighting citrus interstate, hanging up his keys to take on the operational side of the business. Today the company consists of 20 trucks, four body trucks and over 30 refrigerated vans.

“I’ve been part of the road transport industry my whole life so it’s great to have that work recognised,” Reg said.

Liz Martin, National Road Transport Hall of Fame CEO said: “Together with Shell Rimula, we’re excited to welcome Reg into the National Road Transport Hall of Fame .”

For the sixteenth consecutive year, Shell Rimula has partnered with the National Road

Transport Hall of Fame to acknowledge the achievements and lifetime commitment of Australians to the road transport industry.

The Shell Rimula Wall of Fame is part of a four day event in Alice Springs, which includes the induction ceremony and the Shell Rimula Inductee Gala Dinner.

I found the best way to start on the cheesemaking road was to start with ricotta as it is a very easy cheese to make with ingredients you will have in your pantry.

Ricotta cheese originated in Italy when it was necessary to make the most of the by-products from cheese-making. After a cheese like mozzarella was made, there were still some small, soft curds floating in the whey. These were then scooped up and ladled into baskets to be drained, then cooked again and made into ricotta cheese. Ricotta actually means “recooked” in Italian.

You can make ricotta on its own and also when you become more adventurous you can make the ricotta from the left-over whey of other cheeses you have made.

My first experience with cheese making was camembert that took quite a while to make and wasn’t edible in the end.

I think it may have been a bit ambitious for a first try so I found the local home brew shop had the best way to start and that was to buy a cheese kit (you can always ask them to order one in for you) or you can buy the kit online as well as ingredients, source recipes and information.

When your confidence is higher you can learn how to make the more complicated cheeses such as chervè, a white, creamy cheese made from goat’s milk from your supermarket or blue cheese can be made at home, the sky is the limit.

You can also add fresh herbs to your cheeses.

Fresh full cream milk ricotta Ingredients ■ 2 litres full cream milk ■ 1 tsp salt ■ 4 tblsp cream ■ 4 tblsp white vinegar or lemon juice Step 1 - Place the milk, salt and cream in a heavy bottomed saucepan and heat until almost boiling (it needs heat to curdle properly).

Then add the vinegar and stir it once or twice very gently just to distribute the vinegar (constant stirring will

result in tough, rubbery curds). Simmer for one to two minutes and then allow to sit for 10 minutes. Most of the ricotta curds will float to the top, leaving the whey at the bottom.

Step 2 - Line a sieve with two layers of cheesecloth and place it over a large bowl to drain or you can use a fine sieve as the ricotta curds are quite large and creamy. Gently pour the ricotta mixture through the cheesecloth and the

whey will separate at the bottom in a clear yellow liquid and the soft and creamy ricotta will sit at the top.

If you want a more solid ricotta, drain for an hour or overnight. Keeps for two to three days in the fridge in an airtight container. Bake your ricotta with lemon, thyme and grapes.

Hint: Wash your saucepan and utensils immediately, otherwise it can take a bit of elbow grease to clean up.

A cruel diagnosis PADDY Ryan was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease four-and-a-half years ago.

His 15 years in Brisbane’s Metropolitan Fire Brigade and his life since appears to have counted for little. The cruel diagnosis placed Paddy among more than 25,000 Australians aged under 65 and currently living with dementia, a number forecast to increase to close to 37,000 by 2050.

Paddy was always a family man; a husband, father, grandfather and brother. Today his wife Shirley and children Tracy, Kellie, John, Jessica and grandchildren Lukas,

Jack and Tommy have been witness to this proud and selfless man’s gradual decline.

He now struggles to complete sentences or even recognise those who love him most.

Younger brother Shane said Paddy always made light of

every situation, saw the best in everyone, but he was now living with a disease that had had such a dramatic effect on his life and the life of his entire family.

“But dementia doesn’t discriminate and our family know we’re just one of many

families trying to come to terms with it,” he said.

Paddy began to show signs of confusion and forgetfulness in his daily work routine. He kept checking things with his son John who was working with him at the time. The family realised that something was wrong.

Paddy had always been an emotional strength to his family.

He provided comfort and support when his eldest daughter Tracey was involved in a serious car accident and then later diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma.

He’s been in full-time care now for the past 18 months.

Valuing our Qld Seniors Queenslanders had a positive outcome for 2016 Seniors Week

MINISTER’S MESSAGE CORALEE O’ROURKE IT WAS great to have the opportunity to attend a number of events for Seniors Week as Queenslanders celebrated the contributions of older people at more than 500 events across the state.

Our government values the important role seniors play in our communities, and I’m pleased to say we provided more than

$100,000 towards 113 of these events, ranging from expos and outings, to concerts, lunches and exercise classes.

It was a pleasure to officially launch the week-long celebrations at a forum in Brisbane with Council on the Ageing Queensland (COTAQ).

It was fantastic to see landmarks like Brisbane City Hall and King George Square lit up in purple to mark the occasion.

I was also delighted to join the crowd in King George Square to take

Brisbane’s biggest “elfie” or “elder selfie” as part of COTAQ’s Face of Ageing campaign, which aims to

AS MEN get older, many begin to notice a change in their urinary symptoms.

This is usually due to the prostate gland slowly increasing in size. The first thing that is noticed is a slowing of the stream of urine, followed by increased urinary frequency and having to get up during the night to pass urine.

This often causes sleep disruption for the man and his partner.

Other symptoms include the sensation of incomplete bladder emptying and sometimes episodes of involuntary incontinence. Some men will also experience recurrent bladder infections and rarely, an episode of acute urinary retention requiring urgent catheterisation.

When symptoms become bothersome, or if there has been an episode of retention or infection, medical therapy is required. This begins as tablet therapy but as the prostate continues to

Until recently, a rebore operation (TURP) was performed with the core of the prostate being removed by diathermy.

The problems with this procedure included blood loss, particularly for men on blood-thinning medication. The latest addition to the treatment options is “greenlight laser”.

The greenlight laser consists of a 532nm light beam that is green on the light spectrum. The light from the laser is attracted to the red blood cells in the prostate and the heat from the laser beam denatures the prostate tissue and vaporises it into bubbles.

Penetration of the tissue is only to 1-2mm and the heat also seals any blood vessels, reducing any blood loss.

Men on blood-thinning medication can have this procedure and hospital stays are generally shorter as well.

More than 90% of “rebore surgeries” are performed with some type of laser therapy.

Making your will: Things you need to know WHEN you make or update your will, one of the important decisions that you will need to make is who to appoint as your executor.

In this article of our eight-part series, we look at an important consideration about the appointment of an executor for your will.

You can nominate an alternate or back-up executor An executor is the person who you appoint to be responsible for carrying out the wishes in your Will. When choosing an executor, it is a good idea to also name an alternate or back up executor in case your first executor is unable to act as your executor or does not want to become an executor.

A cryptic and general knowledge quiz brought competition between the tables and lucky door prizes were drawn. A photographic display of Club activities from 1991 to the present day was compiled by members Les and Heather Wiggett.

Cutting and serving of the cake brought our wonderful day to a close and we look forward to many more celebration in this strong and vibrant Club.

We meet on the 1st Thursday each month at the Clubhouse, Hervey Bay Golf Club, Tooth St Pialba at 11am for lunch.

Our last two guest speakers were made very welcome, as in July Dr Regina Wulf our new Gynaecologist, told of her life and then opened the meeting up to questions from the ladies present.

This was followed on August 4 with Jan Carlson the manager of “We Care 2” who outlined the role they play in the community. Amazingly, they can do so much with donations alone.

They badly need more storage room, but finances don’t allow them to build sheds as yet.

Does anyone have a container to give away to an excellent cause? Our Trading table has been building the sales up and raises plenty to pay our way with two Learning for Life students we sponsor for The Smith Family.

October 6 meeting ,being Spring, our trading table will consist of plants only, so bring along your spare pot plants for sale.

Ann Rickard discovers a relaxed pace barging IN the Southern French city of Narbonne you can stand by a section of road still intact from the day the ancient Romans built it. The Via Domitia was the first Roman road built to link Italy and Hispania.

This section of the ancient road is now in a shallow pit in the town square, protected by a low wall where you can sit and take a selfie (if you are that way inclined).

The historical city of Narbonne is home to the wondrous St. Just-St Pasteur Cathedral, a massive Gothic structure you could easily spend an entire day just traversing.

Then, a short walk would take you to Les Halles,

the indoor market where your every French gourmet food fantasy will be satisfied.

In June, the beginning of the European summer,

we sailed on board Anjodi, the same barge Rick Stein travelled on when he made his evocative television series, A French Odyssey.

You’ll be picked up in Narbonne and driven to Anjodi dockeda short distance away where you will be greeted by crew proffering Champagne.

Carrying just eight guests, cosseted in cosy yet roomy cabins with ensuite bathrooms, Anjodi is an 87-year-old barge originally designed to

carry grain between Amsterdam and Paris.

Chef Tom presented as a testament to the fresh produce fathered from nearby villages: lunches of zucchini and feta salad, pissaladiere tart, seared tuna nicoise, an abundant seafood platter. Dinners were leisurely five-course affairs, but nothing too heavy.

Barge cruising means you can access places big river ships cannot.

But be warned. Once bitten by the barging bug, you’ll want more, and more.

A new hotel player will join the exclusive list of properties call Bora Bora home, as Conrad Hotels and Resorts prepares to take over the franchise for the Hilton Bora Bora Nui Resort and Spa. The property will undergo a multi-million-dollar refurbishment before re-opening as the stunning Conrad Bora Bora Nui in early 2017 – the first Conrad hotel in Tahiti.

Located on Motu To’opua, off the coast of Bora Bora, Conrad Bora Bora Nui will offer 29 tropical garden and beach villas and 86 over-water bungalows, including the destination’s only double-storey presidential suites.

The resort will feature a full-service spa, a kids’ club, mini-golf course, fitness centre and dining

options including a modern take on a French brasserie, a speciality beach restaurant serving Polynesian and Mediterranean cuisines, a contemporary Chinese restaurant, a swim-up pool bar and an over-water sunset bar and lounge.

The Intercontinental Bora Bora Resort and Thalasso Spa, operated

by Pacific Beachcomber, is set to undertake renovations, constructing four new two-bedroom over-water villas with private pools.

Scheduled to begin in September and last for about 10 months, the work will also include the addition of swimming pools to 10 over-water villas in the south branch of the resort, as well as a general refresh of all villas.

A walk in literary giants’ footsteps

Henry Archibald Hertzberg Lawson was born at Grenfell in central NSW yet Gulgong claims to have been his home, even though he grew up closer to Mudgee about 30km south along the Castlereagh Highway.

Artists open studio

REGIONAL Artists and Tutors (RATS) has changed its open studio program.

The professional group of Fraser Coast artists who would normally open all of their studios to the public will now feature just one artist every second Sunday of each month.

The Open Studio Day offers art lovers an insight into the private studios

and creative process of Fraser Coast artists.

Artist Kelli Mac said the program focused on encouraging public engagement with the arts.

“Participating artists invite the public into their private studios to allow insight into the artists creative processes,” she said. “It was also designed to engage the public and to promote the

Fraser Coast as a vibrant arts scene.”

The open studio program started in 2012.

“We have had huge success with the program but visitor numbers have decreased recently leaving the group deciding to just feature one artist each month,” Kelli said.

“All of the RATS will go to support our featured artists at some point

during that day.

“We will also continue our work within the community and already have some great projects coming up later in the year.”

Artists will display a range of high quality works that will be available for sale during the day. For details visit their Facebook page or website.

A GROUP of five lapidary clubs will fossick together to hold the Wide Bay Burnett Gem Club’s second annual Gem, Craft and Treasure Market.

Members of the clubs from Bundaberg, Gympie, Maryborough, Hervey Bay and Nambour will hold the market at Tinana State School in Maryborough.

Trish Flynn has been a member for more than 20 years, was president of the Bundaberg Club and has been association secretary/ treasurer for 12 years.

Freshwater cod closed for season A CLOSED season applies to Mary River cod and Murray cod from September 1 until November 30, 2016.

Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol officer Coby Walker said the annual closure during spawning season is an important measure to allow the species to reproduce so there are viable stocks of these fish for future generations to enjoy.

“For Mary River cod, the closure applies to all Queensland non-tidal waters, including stocked impoundments,” Mr Walker said.

“The closed season for Murray cod applies only to Queensland waters within the Murray Darling Drainage Division.

“An exception to this

closed season applies to Beardmore, Beehive, Connolly, Cooby, Coolmunda, Glenlyon, Leslie and Storm King dams where the fish are stocked.

“If fishing for Murray cod at one of the stocked dams where the closure does not apply, a minimum size limit of 60 cm, maximum size limit of 110cm and a possession limit of two applies.

“All fishers older thanr 18 years must also have a stocked impoundment permit for recreational freshwater fishing except at Beardmore dam which is not included on the Stocked Impoundment Permit Scheme (SIPS).

“Outside the closed season, Mary River cod is a no take species in all waters except upstream

of the walls of Cressbrook, Hinze, Maroon, Moogerah, North Pine, Somerset and Wivenhoe dams, and lakes Dyer (Bill Gunn Dam) and Clarendon.

“It was found that Mary River cod are breeding in the waters within and upstream of these impoundments, so a three month closure was implemented to protect them during their spawning period.

“Fish caught during the spawning season puts them and their ability to breed at risk,” Mr Walker said.

The caller states they have identified the fraudsters and then will request your help to catch the fraudsters by asking you to send a sum of money which their

company will reimburse you or credit your bank account. The caller instructs you not to disclose this request to others as it may result in the fraudsters being tipped off. They may also request to remotely access your computer via TeamViewer, a remote access software (or other remote access software), to show you that fraudsters are indeed attacking.

In some occasions they

show you your bank account online which has a false credit showing.

The caller provides you with their name and identification number.

Later, you receive another call from another person making similar claims.
