AT 71 years of age, Judy Nunn sees her 1980s’ career-change from actress to novelist as rather fortuitous. It meant she never reached the point of complaining about limited screen roles for older women. Nevertheless, she agrees the range of roles available as you age are narrow but, in typical fashion, she moves beyond the moment for solutions. “We need to get more women into writing and producing and that would help change things,” she says. As for claims of “invisibility” in old age, with a smile in her deep voice, she quotes crime author Ruth Rendell, who famously said: “I’m too famous to be invisible.” But Judy says, if she’s made a quick trip to the supermarket dressed down in trackies rather than made up and is suddenly recognised, then invisibility would have its upside. Still, who is it that Judy Nunn fans see? Ailsa, the wife of Alf on Home and Away, the actress who gave the first lesbian kiss on Australian television, the award-winning screenwriter or bestselling author of 15 books. Judy Nunn is all of these, and in 2015 her multi-faceted career was recognised when she was made a Member of the Order of Australia for her “significant service to the performing arts as a scriptwriter and actor of stage and screen, and to

pain and the real problems I have going on. “My birds have been my saving grace. They’re my reason for getting up in the morning. I’m always thinking ‘how I can make their world better?’ It gives me a purpose in life because they rely on me.” Julieanne is a member of the Gold Coast Aviary and Bird Association (GCABA), which this year celebrates its 30th anniversary. Club president Lyn Carrhas kept birds since she was a child but she is well aware of their therapeutic benefits after a number of family losses. “If it wasn’t for my birds, I would have fallen over in a heap,” the 59-year-old said. “You know they depend on you entirely. So you have to get up every day and give them their feed and water. And it’s such a lovely surprise when they have babies, and to see their lovely colours.” Both women recommend birdkeeping for retirees or people needing an interest, suggesting they start with a pair of birds such as budgies, lovebirds or cockatiels.

But be warned, once you start it is hard to stop at just one pair. Lyn’s collection now includes galahs, peach faces, cockatiels, canaries, 30-plus budgies, African greys, a blue-throated Amazon and a green-cheeked conure. GCABA members range from 10 to over 80 years of age, including a family of three generations of “birdos”. The club will host a bird sale at the main pavilion of Mudgeeraba Showground on Sunday, October 16 from 10am-1pm. More than 400 people went through the doors at the last sale, and Lyn said it was a great way to meet breeders and find out more about the hobby. Entry is just $2 for adults. Alternatively, the club meets on the third Friday of each month at the showground, and while there are guest speakers, sales tables and more, Lyn admitted most of the talking and sharing of tips goes on around the supper table. For enquiries, phone Lyn on 0411 048 348 or visit goldcoastaviary bird.org.au.

EVERYONE needs a reason to get up in the morning and for two Gold Coast women who’ve been through extremely tough times in recent years, their birds provide that motivation. Helensvale woman Julieanne Mathieson suffered a horrific allergic reaction to the antibiotic gentamicin four years ago. It destroyed her sense of balance and forced her to stop work, driving and many other everyday activities, and as she says “redefined me”. Previously an unstoppable go-getter, the former entertainer turned casino security expert hit the proverbial brick wall. Desperately seeking something to reinvigorate her interest in life, the 57-year-old’s husband bought her a pair of fischer’s lovebirds. That was three years ago and today Julieanne has an aviary of about 30 birds, including canaries, gouldian and cordon-bleu finches and orange-breasted waxbills. “I’m hooked,” Julieanne said. “While I’m working with my birds it’s very therapeutic and relaxing. It distracts me from the

“I was so impressed I let her cut the ribbon.” The store was officially opened on August 11 and the carpark was full and the streets lined with cars – a good sign for the future of the store.

A dedicated carpark is another plus for the new location, with shoppers and people leaving donations previously having to jostle for parking along the highway. The West Burleigh store

is now the Salvation Army’s biggest on the Gold Coast, so if you have a little time to lend a hand, Mr Thompson said volunteers are always welcome. Inquiries to 137 258.

FOR 26 years the Salvation Army store on the Gold Coast Highway at Burleigh Heads was bustling with shoppers. But with the growth in popularity of Burleigh village, rising rents forced the Salvos out. Gold Coast area manager David Thompson said he had to look for a better option … and he found it at 5-7 Kortum Dr, West Burleigh. “The new shop is bigger, airier and lighter, has a lot more clothes and a lot more furniture, giving customers a better choice,” Mr Thompson said. “It’s just a nicer environment for everyone working and shopping.” The store has about 20 volunteers, many of whom are seniors, including Salvos stalwart Carol Smith. “She’s been volunteering with us for 22 years and she was there with us every day setting up the store,” Mr Thompson said.

Goldie’s glam and glitter

Celebrating diverse communities

A chance for the community to... celebrate each other, the Gold Coast and the event with pride.

By Alison Houston

GLITTER Festival 2016 is a chance to be who you want to be in an atmosphere of diversity, inclusiveness and just plain fun. In just its second year, presented by The Arts Centre Gold Coast at Surfers Paradise, the festival is offering an impressively varied program of national and international artists and movies, as well as social get-togethers and nostalgia from October 6-9. For many older members of the LGBTIQ+ (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trans Intersex Queer Questioning) community, who have lived through decades of homophobia, such an open celebration is something they only dreamed of. “It’s a chance for the community to come together and support and celebrate each other, the Gold Coast and the event with pride,” project officer

— Amber Patch

CELEBRATING DIVERSITY: Glitter Festival performers, ambassadors and organisers are joined by community members to celebrate the launch of this year’s event. PHOTO: CONTRIBUTED

Amber Patch said. Among the standouts is Aria Award-winner Anthony Callea presenting the songs of George Michael, backed by a six-piece live

band on October 8, and the return of Trevor Ashley on October 7 with I’m Every Woman, in which he portrays some of the world’s most famous

divas. “He was a huge hit last year, and is just a phenomenal performer,” Ms Patch said. The There’s Something I Need to Tell You Supper

Club is back by demand, where people can share LGBTIQ+ stories in a safe and supportive environment. A free performance of

Gladys in the basement on October 6 pays tribute to musical theatre’s Gladys Moncrief, who was known at her height as Australia’s Queen of Song and simply Our Glad. For those seeking nostalgia, the Glitter Gallery unravels the history of queer culture on the Gold Coast. Finally, chill out and relax in a family atmosphere at the free Saturday Social from 3-7pm on October 8 with an eclectic mix of musicians, dance, art, food and community stalls. “It’s putting our stamp on a community fair day, and there will be lots of fun for all ages,” Ms Patch said. AS INDIVIDUALS, it helps to understand the demands on our environment and what we can learn now, so we can change our ways, for the benefit of future generations. Some people believe that to live in a sustainable way is to make sacrifices, to live a less comfortable life in the name of environmental sustainability. That doesn’t have to be the case and here are some ways you can leave behind a lighter footprint and a lighter budget.

Solar power energy from the sun can be captured in two ways, as heat energy (thermal energy) or as light energy. Photovoltaic (PV) technology, also known as solar panels, converts the sun's light energy into an electrical current. It’s an increasingly affordable option to reduce power bills. Once paid for and installed, it’s low-maintenance and can last 20 years or more and the electricity they generate is free. Solar power systems have become very

HARVESTING RAINWATER

Rainwater is a natural and free source of fresh water. If you live in a rural area or on acreage, rainwater may already be part or all of your water supply. Harvesting rainwater in a tank gives you a personal supply of water to use during water restrictions and can help to reduce your water bills.

HEATING AND COOLING DESIGN

Very little energy is needed to make a well-designed house comfortable. Appropriate insulation, which is essential for a comfortable house, can create low or even no energy requirements for heating and cooling. Even for existing homes, there are many ways to reduce energy bills, improve comfort and help the environment. Gas heaters and efficient reverse cycle air conditioners, produce only one-third the greenhouse gas emissions of standard electric heaters. Wood can be an excellent fuel because it is a renewable resource if sustainably harvested.

Cheese glorious cheese CHEAP EATS, NO TRUFFLES CHRISTINE PERKINS CHEESE is becoming a very expensive and indulgent pleasure these days. Have you ever thought of making your own? It can cost a fraction of the price after the initial outlay for the utensils and ingredients and the flavour is so much better? You will be surprised how easy it is to make. I found the best way to start on the cheese making road was to start with Ricotta as it is a very easy cheese to make with ingredients you will have in your pantry. Ricotta cheese originated in Italy when it was necessary to make the most of the by-products from cheese-making. After a cheese like mozzarella was made, there were still some small, soft curds floating in the whey. These were then scooped up and ladled into baskets to be drained, then cooked again and made into ricotta cheese. Ricotta actually means “recooked” in Italian.

You can make Ricotta on its own and also when you become more adventurous you can make the Ricotta from the left over whey of other cheeses you have made. My first experience with cheese making was Camembert that took quite a while to make and wasn’t edible in the end. I think it may have been a bit ambitious for a first try so I found the local home brew shop had the best way to start and that was to buy a cheese kit (you can always ask them to order one in for you) or you can buy the kit on line as well as ingredients, source recipes and information. When your confidence is higher you can learn how to make the more complicated cheeses such as Chervè, a white, creamy cheese made from goat’s milk from your supermarket or blue cheese can be made at home, the sky is the limit. You can also add fresh herbs to your cheeses. Two web sites I found are www.cheesemaking. com.au and www.madmillie.com.au that have all you need to start. See the next page for a lovely recipe. Good luck and buon appetito!

BUDGET TIPS: Hit the road more. PHOTO: FLAIR IMAGES

PHOTO: CONTRIBUTED

Fresh full cream milk ricotta Ingredients ■ 2 ltrs full cream milk ■ 1 tspn salt ■ 4 tbspns cream ■ 4 tbsps white vinegar or lemon juice Step 1 - Place the milk, salt and cream in a heavy bottomed saucepan and heat until almost boiling (it needs heat to curdle properly). Then add the vinegar and stir it once or twice very gently just to distribute the vinegar (constant stirring will

result in tough, rubbery curds). Simmer for one to two minutes and then allow to sit for 10 minutes. Most of the ricotta curds will float to the top, leaving the whey at the bottom. Step 2 - Line a sieve with two layers of cheesecloth and place it over a large bowl to drain or you can use a fine sieve as the ricotta curds are quite large and creamy. Gently pour the ricotta mixture through the cheesecloth and the

whey will separate at the bottom in a clear yellow liquid and the soft and creamy ricotta will sit at the top. If you want a more solid ricotta, drain for an hour or overnight. Keeps for two to three days in the fridge in an airtight container. Bake your ricotta with lemon, thyme and grapes. Hint: Wash your saucepan and utensils immediately, otherwise it can take a bit of elbow grease to clean up.

ON THE ROAD

Don’t waste money on expensive toilet chemicals. Laundry soaker is a good alternative. According to freecampingaustralia. com.au Coles home brand is the favoured additive, stating it’s phosphate free, biodegradable, safe for septics and suitable for dump point disposal. Directions ■ Mix 2 heaped tablespoons of Ultra Booster to one litre of cold water and stir until dissolved. ■ Pour into bottom of 20 litre holding tank.

VISITING the Gold Coast Renaissance Faire is like stepping into a 16th century Disneyland, according to its director David Russell. That has opened the way for the first time to equestrian events including jousting and archery on horseback. These are no stunt performers. There are some of the most skilled horsemen and women in the world, using 1.2m lances, and dressed in real armour. The archers also include a two-time world champ and a gold medallist. “From the moment you enter the faire, the sense of fantasy is never broken,” David said. This year’s faire will involve over 50 costumed performers, three stages, Shakespearean performances, court music, dance, maypoles, games, children’s entertainment, three royal processions a day and more. “The faire is quite a unique multi-generational event, and really does

I’m pleased to say we provided more than $100,000 towards 113 events. It was a pleasure to officially launch the celebrations in Brisbane with Council on the Ageing Queensland (COTAQ). I was delighted to partake in Brisbane’s biggest “elfie’’ or “elder selfie’’ as part of COTAQ’s Face of Ageing campaign. We reached a milestone in our Tech Savvy Seniors initiative, helping older Queenslanders navigate the digital world. More than 7000 seniors have participated in the sessions at libraries across the state, The “It’s on for young and old’’ theme really shone through all events. Advice is food for thought LISTEN to your body – that’s the advice from nutritional educator Jema Lee. Jema has started a series of Over 50 and Thriving courses as part of Gold Coast City Council’s Active and Healthy program. About 35 people attended her first class last month on gut health. Similar turnouts at her October workshop on The Fuss about Sugar and November’s Understanding Weight Management, will ensure the series is offered monthly monthly while a nutritional program could also be introduced. Jema has for more than two years provided free monthly classes for all ages at Essence of Living in Mermaid Beach and it was participants of these classes who asked her to do something more specifically for the older age group. "I really believe in having a healthy community, which is why I run these classes," Jema said. "We’ve got a big population here on the Gold Coast in that over-50s age bracket and they are missing out on a

lot of new information." Jema understands older people are often reluctant to look beyond traditional medicine but she does not profess to diagnose, heal or treat conditions. Instead she helps people decipher the messages their bodies

are giving them through anything from continually breaking nails, to skin breakouts, lack of energy to poor sleep. "I provide support and guidance to help people understand the role of food and nutrition and how it affects their body,"

she said. Jema said many believe their diet is good but warned that it is easy to fall into bad habits such as missing breakfast, especially for those who live on their own or have moved away from family. "There’s also just a lot

more information about nutrition than there was 30-40 years ago, particularly understanding things like good versus bad sugars,” she said. "And weight management is a very big thing with this age group. It’s important to realise it’s not always about the food or the exercise, it’s about getting the balance right." There are multiple factors involved in weight gain or loss, including health, lifestyle, body type, medication, fitness, heredity and metabolism. Understanding why you are a certain weight is the first step. "It’s about finding a healthy way of living that suits each person individually," Jema said. "We discuss the best way to eat foods to serve you and your body … to make you feel better and take that knowledge into the future." To find out more about Jema’s over-50s workshops at Broadbeach and Elanora libraries, call the libraries, visit the council’s Active and Healthy page, or contact Jema on 0413 783 820 or info@wellsome.com or visit wellsome.com.

Finding an inner joy INSPIRING AND RETIRING EVA BENNETT “THINK young and do what you love.” This was the philosophy of a friend of ours, a 74-year-old leader of a swing band. A few years ago, I attended a charity concert where his band was performing. The swing the band was made up of 18 musicians, ranging in age from 26–85 years. Our friend said the mix of ages, kept the older musicians young at heart. Having a purpose and a positive outlook, certainly proved that if we think and feel younger than we are, we can look younger and healthier, slowing down the ageing process. I believe that if we have fear thoughts about ageing, we will age quicker than someone who accepts the ageing process as the natural flow of life and sees new opportunities for continued growth. As author and poet Oliver Wendell Holmes said: “To feel 70 years

young is far more cheerful than to feel 40 years old.” Back in the 1970s, Louise Hay wrote her best-selling book, You Can Heal Your Life, in which she discusses the mental patterns that create our physical illnesses and how to create positive affirmations to heal these illnesses. I personally have found this book a source of inspiration for many years. Research now says as much as 80%

that belief. Just for the day, in that course, I asked them to tell themselves that they were worth listening to. Time and time again, over the years, I have seen a transformation in people, as they began to say over and over to themselves, “I am now worth listening to”. This new belief was reflected in a more confident voice and body language and their ability

Research now says as much as 80% of our physical illnesses can originate from our thought patterns. of our physical illnesses can originate from our thought patterns. For a number of years I ran courses in public speaking. I found that the common, underlying belief that holds many people back from reaching their potential as a presenter is, “I am not worth listening to”. This belief was reflected in nervous body language and voice. Before I could successfully help them to improve their presentation techniques, I focussed on helping them to change

to connect with their listeners improved greatly. Of course, to make this new thought pattern a habit, they needed to practise it regularly. Things that can lead to mental decline and hasten the ageing process are stress, poor nutrition, lack of sleep, worry, anger, too much caffeine and alcohol. They all affect our ability to think and remember clearly. To slow down the ageing process and to stay healthier mentally and physically, there are a

number of easy things you can do every day that involves minimum spending of money. A good night’s sleep regenerates the brain. Positive thoughts, including daily gratitude for the good in your life, strengthens the immune system. A daily walk and focussed breathing, rejuvenates the brain and helps you to think more clearly. Eat well, drink moderately, laugh more and enjoy friendships and the simple pleasures of life each day. These can all help to slow down the ageing process. Today’s baby boomers, especially women, don’t feel their age. We still want to look good, but with all the persuasive advertising about cosmetic surgery promising to make us look young forever, it can lead to women avoiding the reality of ageing, especially physical ageing. A growing number of women of all ages are trying procedures that don’t always have the desired outcome. ■ Eva Bennett, visit www. plansretirement.com.au or email eva.bennett@ bigpond.com.

Dementia Month time when you are not alone AUSTRALIANS are being encouraged to find out more about dementia during Dementia Awareness Month in September, so people living with the condition feel less isolated and alone. As part of Dementia Awareness Month, Alzheimer’s Australia NSW and Alzheimer’s Australia (Qld) will host a range of events. Visit fightdementia.org.au for details. This year’s theme is You Are Not Alone. World Alzheimer’s Day is on Wednesday, September 21. Dementia Awareness

A cruel diagnosis

Month 2016 is supported by financial assistance from the Australian Government. Alzheimer’s Australia is the charity for people with dementia and their families and carers. As the peak body, it provides advocacy, support services, education and information. An estimated 353,800 people have dementia in Australia. This number is projected to reach more than half a million by 2030. National Dementia Helpline: 1800 100 500. An interpreter service is available.

PADDY Ryan was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease four-and-a-half years ago. His 15 years in Brisbane’s Metropolitan Fire Brigade and his life since appears to have counted for little. The cruel diagnosis placed Paddy among more than 25,000 Australians aged under 65 and currently living with dementia, a number forecast to increase to close to 37,000 by 2050. Paddy was always a family man; a husband, father, grandfather and brother. Today his wife Shirley and children Tracy, Kellie, John, Jessica and grandchildren Lukas,

He kept checking things with his son John who was working with him at the time. The family realised that something was wrong. Paddy had always been an emotional strength to his family. Why the wax? SNAPSHOTS OF LIFE ANN RICKARD ann.rickard@apn.com.au

LISTEN up ladies. Let’s talk about eyebrows. Those things that sit above our eyes and used to be full and flourishing, but have diminished with age, can have a dramatic effect on our face. Accordingly to beauty magazines, too thin eyebrows can add 10 years onto our appearance. (We’ve all known a lady who shaved off her eyebrows and then pencilled in a thick black line, haven’t we?). These days you can’t pick up a magazine without being admonished about the state of your eyebrows. No longer is it enough to pluck and

pencil, it’s now necessary to attend an eyebrow salon. I’ve had my eyebrows dyed professionally, but the thought of a place dedicated to eyebrows gives me the jitters. I am happy to go to salons that give facials, cut hair and fiddle with toenails, but something about paying someone to smarten my eyebrows makes me feel… lazy. Surely we must take responsibility for our own eyebrows? On my last overseas trip I stormed the beauty counter in duty free (as opposed to the liquor section) and sought professional advice. I was told I must comb them, wax them, have a template made for them and once all that was done, to maintain them I should apply a special ‘moulding’ serum to set

Eliminate age with eyebrows.

each little hair and only then could I fill in the compliant eyebrow with a special eyebrow powder, and give them a final comb with a special (expensive) gadget. I must maintain and condition my eyebrows regularly with special gel. I’ve done all this and it adds 10 minutes on to my make-up routine. Green-light prostate future GOOD MEDICINE Dr MICHAEL GILLMAN AS MEN get older, many will begin to notice a change in their urinary symptoms. Usually, this is a result of the prostate gland slowly increasing in size. At first the urine stream slows, before frequency increases, and finally sleep disruption due to waking in the night to pass urine. Other symptoms include an incomplete bladder emptying sensation and involuntary incontinence episodes. Some men will experience recurrent bladder infections and rarely an episode of acute urinary retention ready to lend a helping hand. Frances is one of U3A Twin Towns’ past Senior of the Year award recipients. We salute you Frances and thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

requiring urgent catheterisation. When symptoms become bothersome, or you’ve experience an episode of retention or infection, medical therapy is required. This begins as tablet therapy, but as the prostate continues to grow, the tablets may lose effectiveness and surgery is required. Until recently, a rebore operationwas performed with the core of the prostate being removed by diathermy. Problems with this procedure include blood loss, particularly for men on blood thinning medication. A new treatment option is a futuristic sounding green-light laser. Consisting of a 532nm light beam, which is green on the light spectrum, the laser light is attracted to the

red blood cells in the prostate and the heat from the laser beam denatures the prostate tissue and vaporises it into bubbles. Penetration of the tissue is only to 1–2 mm and the heat also seals up any blood vessels reducing any blood loss. Men on blood thinning medication can have this procedure and hospital stays are generally shorter with this procedure. This treatment method has become so popular that more than 90% of re-bore surgeries are performed with some type of laser therapy. Who would have thought that those of us who watched the light sabres in the Star Wars movies would see something similar being used in the operating theatres? — www.drmichael gillman.com

Haphazardly becoming Zen

MINDFULNESS is having its moment, by moment by moment – that’s an in joke, and you might not get it, and it might not even be funny. But mindfulness is in. It’s in in the US everywhere from prisons to playgrounds. It’s in in Australia, in schools, in community centres, in lounge rooms where groups of mindful practitioners meet to share the love. It might even be in next door. Mindfulness is even a thing in dating with special sites for mindful singles. I might even join one in the hope of meeting someone on my wavelength. Which wavelength? To be honest, I’m not quite sure. I’m a newbie yogi. That’s partly because I’m approaching it with a beginner’s mind – another mindful saying – but also because I’ve only been into it a few years and in terms of yogis, that’s a baby yogi. If you think yoga’s just a series of poses, it’s not. Yoga’s a tradition of physical, breathing and mental disciplines with the ultimate aim of self-liberation, or the short-term aim of calm and tranquillity.

It’s working for me, somewhat. I practice mindfulness. I sit on my eco meditation cushion in my Zen nook beneath my Buddha print, prayer flags at the door. On a low-set table is a Tibetan bowl I can’t get to sing. There are candles I forget to light, and books I read, but possibly maybe don’t quite understand. I’ve got apps to remind me to breathe, and apps for guided meditations and even an app I can use with my finger as a sort of Zen finger painting activity. There’s music I use for meditation, and music with meaningful voice-overs, music with chanting, and music for drifting into a Zen sleep. There’s a sound shower – too hard to explain, but totally makes me Zen. I’m getting more Zen, I must be. I’ve been to meditation retreats and sat for days following my breath. I’ve practised in yoga studios, in community halls, on the beach and under trees. I practice mindfulness as I do the washing up, as I take a shower and as I walk the dog. And, like a true yogi, I’m willing to share. So, if

you’d like to follow my dedicated if haphazard journey towards a life of Zen, I’ll be back next month. I’ll also provide some genuinely useful information in my pick for the month. This month I’m loving: Insight Timer meditation app. It’s been my go-to for guided meditations for a while. It’s free and there’s a huge variety of guided meditations, nicely grouped into playlists like Good Morning, Sleep, Relax, Mindfulness. You can create your own playlist with bookmarks. There’s a timer, if you want to go solo, and lots of groups you can join to become part of the community. I love the option to send a “Thanks for meditating with me” message to someone, anywhere in the world, who’s been meditating at the same time you have. And it’s cool to get a message back from someone. Jan Richards is a newbie yogi with a developing yoga and meditation practice. Her guru is Elvis the mini-poodle – always in the moment.

wellbeing Everyday life Journey with Jenny by Jenny Farello IT’S been a long time since I did any writing like this. But if my mum could do it, why can’t I? She kept diaries and notebooks for most of her life and at age 92 her scribblings, as she called them, were published. I wish I’d had the foresight to do what she did. She’s left quite a legacy for her children and grandchildren. My life has been so very different to hers – times change – demographics change. Apart from time as a stay-at-home mum, my working life centred

After 20 years as a carer for my husband, then my parents, I have a new lease on life.

around office work. Then at age 54 a big career change – I became a fitness instructor and personal trainer and the world of fitness, health and how to be a “better me” opened up. Now, after almost 20 years as a carer for my husband, then consequently for both of my parents, I have a whole new lease on life, and put all that training into daily practice. Living by the beach now (my lifelong dream), makes its pretty easy.

Plenty of fresh, local fish and produce, miles of bicycle paths for cycling and walking, although I much prefer to walk the miles of sandy beach, and the whole Pacific Ocean to swim, kayak and partake of some aqua aerobics. All you need is Mother Nature, a good attitude and a friend or two to join you. The beach is not essential – the great outdoors a park, a bush track, maybe some steps leading to somewhere or nowhere, just whatever happens to be in your neighbourhood. It’s amazing how inventive you can be. Free gym equipment. Frisbees, skipping ropes, and balls are great accessories. Add a friends and you have the makings for plenty of healthy fun.

Serene Retirement Olympics eclipse the Rio celebrations THE closing ceremony of the Rio Olympic Games was always going to be a colourful one but for one retirement village the excitement and colour of Rio was much closer to home. Serene Retirement Village hosted their own Olympics for the residents throughout the month of August and not only was competition fierce, it provided many activities and laughs for all involved who said it was one of the best social events they have been involved in. Competing residents were divided into countries, points were earned across a variety of games and exercise classes and residents were also awarded participation points for keeping themselves fit

silver or bronze medals depending on the service they chose. Village manager Mish Kitchin said there was no shortage of competitive spirit in the village. “We really thought it might be fun to have some events coinciding with the Rio Olympics but there was no doubt that the residents took it just as seriously as the Rio athletes and all the staff were amazed at how involved everyone was,” Mish said. “There was a really exciting vibe in the village leading up to the last day.” Competition culminated with five events on the final day before a closing ceremony at which the residents dressed in their best Brazilian-inspired outfit.

New hearing aid breaks through background noise AUDIOLOGIST Suzanne Porter says the most recent breakthrough in hearing aid technology, which has enabled wireless communication between hearing aids, has resulted in improved sound quality and customer satisfaction for hearing aid candidates, but most importantly has improved the ability of speech understanding in background noise for wearers. “The new function means that when one hearing aid decides to change settings, volume or frequency response, the other hearing aid is told to do the same thing at the same time. This essentially means that the hearing aids are talking to each other, which results in perfect unison in the operation of the hearing aids as one unit to focus on speech above background noise.”

PHOTO: CONTRIBUTED

Suzanne says the breakthrough will be of particular benefit to those who struggle to hear speech above conflicting noise, such as at a restaurant or in a social setting. “We are recommending this technology to our hearing aid candidates who particularly report trouble hearing others

amongst background noise.” A1 Discreet Hearing Aids is one of the few providers to provide this technology, and it is also available in a range of their most discreet digital devices. Eligible pensioners and veterans can also receive discreet hearing aids free through the government program

through A1 Discreet Hearing Aids. A1 Discreet Hearing Aids has sites at the Q Super Centre in Mermaid Waters, Coolangatta, and Hope Island. To make an appointment with hearing specialist Suzanne Porter or Don Hudson call 07 5578 6669. All clients can receive a free hearing assessment.

Quit the big home and explore the advantages of small living Emily Black

Emily.Black@seniorsnewspaper.com.au

LOOKING for a smaller home and the advantages of cheaper building, maintenance and service costs? Then, you are not alone. According to Brisbanebased The Tiny House Company co-founder Lara Noble, the tiny home movement is taking housing to a new level, saying it is not just a dream; the tiny house movement is a reality. “It is about time the housing market caught up and offered some alternatives to the ‘just in case you need it’

suburban four-bedder,” Lara says. “As designers and builders, our interest is in compact spaces; whatever form or application they take. “Of course, living in small dwellings is nothing new, most of the world already does it, but here in Australia we’ve lost our way. “For some, it’s the freedom to live a well-balanced life by purchasing something small within their means rather than relying on a crippling mortgage. “For others it’s the flexibility of being able to

change the size and function of an existing home as the need arises – a granny flat for family dependants, an additional rental property on-site, or a smaller home to downsize to once the kids have left.” More Australians are adopting it as a means of achieving freedom from debt, minimal environmental impact, and the opportunity to live simply, Lara says. Key design features Focusing on the basic requirements of sleep, work, relaxation and hygiene, a tiny home, no matter what application, should feature living areas awash with sunlight and flush with airflow. Moving joinery will allow for spaces to grow or contract as required and a loft will provide an escape nook or alternative sleeping area. Just like normal housing, north-facing is optimal and, if you include a conservatory, it will buffer the external environment , providing a place to grow vegetables.

Alternatively, for tiny homes on the move, a retractable deck provides extra space when needed. ■ One bedroom ■ One bathroom ■ One living area ■ Kitchen dining ■ Laundry nook Lara says tiny homes are built to suit Queensland guidelines, with dimensions meeting regulations so permits or escort vehicles are not needed. Sunshine Coast-based Heavy Vehicle Registration Assessment Scheme officer John Black says heavy vehicle standards vary between states and, while you may only require a car licence to tow a tiny home in Queensland, you may need a heavy combination licence in other states. He says while grey nomads are looking to hit the road, some are looking for a more permanent base. “It is also easy to put the house on footings for more stable accommodation.” Koho Developments,

North Manly, are leaders in the tiny home movement, catering for downsizing Gen-Xers and specialise in developing co-housing communities for low-moderate income singles and couples including the young, elderly and disabled. Director Adam BennetSmith says Koho Developments employs tiny house principles including space efficiency, amenity and storage. “We believe that with good design, tiny homes can offer more amenity in better locations than larger conventional homes,” he says. “We recently completed The Kollective Byron, which consists of 20 one-bedroom detached houses around 30sq m. “We are also working to rethink models of tenure including long-term leases and shared equity models that will give people who have the income capacity to get a home loan but may lack the deposit, an opportunity to enter or re-enter the property market.

“Given how low interest rates are, the repayments are actually less than the equivalent rental rate while at the same time providing the security of tenure of home ownership.” Adam says clients find the reduced management, vacancy and maintenance costs attractive. Other tiny homes to consider include: ■ Prefabricated modular homes ■ Container homes ■ Tiny apartments ■ Kit homes ■ Caravans ■ House boats. Houseboats are an affordable alternative for those seeking waterfront permanent residences, with basic plans starting at about $50,000 - keep in mind mooring and maintenance expenses. Container homes continue to be an alternate tiny choice and offer flexibility with size, but it is important to plan for sound and thermal insulation, waterproofing, fireproofing and waste removal (composting toilet). Pre-installed bathrooms and kitchens are the best choice, and the a termite-treated marine grade ply base on a structural steel sub-frame. Ann Rickard discovers a relaxed pace barging IN the Southern French city of Narbonne you can stand by a section of road still intact from the day the ancient Romans built it. The Via Domitia was the first Roman road built to link Italy and Hispania. This section of the ancient road is now in a shallow pit in the town square, protected by a low wall where you can sit and take a selfie (if you are that way inclined). The historical city of Narbonne is home to the wondrous St. Just-St Pasteur Cathedral, a massive Gothic structure you could easily spend an entire day just traversing. New York dining on the cheap EAT, DRINK & BE KERRY KERRY HEANEY DESPITE the exchange rate, you can eat out in New York on the cheap if you a local’s shoes on. Here’s the ten best places for memorable cheap eats I discovered with greeter Ellen Gasnich. Big Apple Greeter Tours are free and locals show visitors around as a friend. 1. Find the best value dumplings in Chinatown at Fried Dumpling, 106 Mosco St. You can buy five fried dumplings for $1. Although the sign says they do pork buns, it’s best not to ask as the response is rarely favourable. 2. Pop into 69 Chinese

Restaurant at 69 Bayard Street, to see the walls papered with signed $1 notes. Try Chinese comfort food classics such as Beef Cho Fun and Minced Beef with Peas and Raw Egg. The average order is under $10. 3. It’s easy to find Jing Fong Restaurant, 20 Elizabeth St, by people queueing on the street outside. The Cantonese restaurant seating 800 people draws crowds on weekends for dim sum rolled out on carts. 4. Deluxe Food Market, 79 Elizabeth St, is a long, narrow supermarket selling Chinese groceries, baked goods, sticky rice and Asian-style sandwiches. Wind your way through the crowds to find marinated meats and seafood. Check for samples too. 5. Look for the sign on Canal St corner, fire

hydrants painted in red, white and green and you’ll know you are in Little Italy where the street vendors sell almond biscotti and fig cookies, roasted chickpeas and honey roasted peanuts by the bag or pound. 6. A Lobster Tail, crisp puff pastry filled with cream at Ferrara Bakery and Café at 195 Grand St, along with some cannoli is a must try. 7. Katz’s Deli, 204 E Houston St, is where Where Harry Met Sally in 1989. People queue up outside the door, and there’s a ticket system to get inside. Take a ticket – it doesn’t matter if you don’t buy anything, but you’ll be tempted. 8. Established in 1920, Piemonte Ravioli, 190 Grand St, Co makes ravioli, tortellini and other take-out pasta, all made fresh pasta daily the old school way. 9. La Esquina Corner Deli at 114 Kenmare St, is a casual taqueria hiding a dimly lit subterranean brasserie serving upmarket Mexican fare. 10. Dean & Deluca, 560 Broadway, has been providing the world’s best epicurean treats for more than 35 years. It’s a wonder just to walk through the doors, but head to the back where you are sure to find samples or just try the sushi bar. * For more New York cheap eats visit eatdrink andbekerry.com.au

Brisbane sparkles from the deck of sea star A glTHE Brisbane River is delightful at any time of year, any season. It is especially beautiful in November and December, when the jacarandas are in full lavender bloom. To enjoy the river at a leisurely place, take a cruise with Brisbane Star Cruises. Newly owned and operated by husband and wife team Grant and Lee Heffernan, Brisbane Star Cruises offer a variety of cruises along the river, many of them especially suitable for seniors. The Heffernans have lengthy experience in the hospitality, service and marine industries, and

know how to offer comfort and interest. They spent many years together as crew working for the rich and famous on private luxury yachts all over the world. Mr Heffernan is a qualified yacht captain and has worked in the yachting industry for 30 years. He grew up in and around boats as his family owned and operated a small marina in Sydney. Mrs Heffernan worked as a chief stewardess in the yachting industry and also as a wedding planner in Port Douglas. “We are excited to be able to take on the Brisbane Star and to have

the opportunity to restore her to her former glory,” she said. “We will be calling on our years of experience to create happy memories for people.” As well as party, history and corporate cruises, Brisbane Star operates a seniors’ cruise. “The Brisbane Seniors’

Cruises start at 9.30am from Southbank and returns around 1.30pm,” Mrs Heffernan said. “Morning tea (scones, jam, cream) and a light lunch (sandwiches) are served.” The Brisbane seniors’ cruises include the Mandalay cruise, the history tour to Fort Lytton,

the Brisbane River Moreton Bay cruise and the new Newstead House tour. Although Brisbane Star can take 100 passengers, the Heffernans like to cap the number at 60, to give guests plenty of room to move about on the boat. “The Brisbane River is just beautiful,” Mrs

SIT BACK, RELAX Travel the world page by page with stories from Australia to Nigeria

Races collide

MASTER storyteller Judy Nunn has now sold more than one million books worldwide. In this spellbinding No.1 bestseller, she takes us on a breathtaking journey deep into the red heart of Australia. It is 2001 and as the world charges into the new millennium, a century-old dream is about to be realised in the Red Centre of Australia: the completion of the mighty Ghan railway, a long-lived vision to create the “backbone of the continent”, a line which will finally link Adelaide with the Top End. But construction of the final leg between Alice Springs and Darwin will not be without its complications, for much of the desert it will cross is Aboriginal land. Hired as a negotiator, Jessica Manning must walk a delicate line to reassure the Elders their sacred sites will be protected. Will her innate understanding of the spiritual landscape, rooted in her own Arunta heritage, win their trust? It’s not easy to keep the peace when Matthew Witherton and his survey team are quite literally blasting a rail corridor through the timeless land

Will wishes – help appointing executors

EVERYDAY MATTERS CAROLYN DEVRIES CEO of New Way Lawyers

WHEN you make or update your will, one of the important decisions to make is who to appoint as your executor.

As part of our eight-part series, we look at the importance of who you appoint as an executor for your will. An executor is the person to be responsible for carrying out the wishes in your will. When choosing an executor, it is a good idea

to name an alternate or back up, in case your first choice is unable to act on your behalf, or does not want to be responsible. Who you want to have act as your executor, or alternate, you should consider the following: ■ Do you trust them? ■ Are they confident and prepared to deal with your

assets in accordance with your wishes? ■ Do they have time to do what is needed? ■ Will they make sound decisions if disputes arise over your estate? ■ Are they likely to outlive you? You can choose anyone who is older than 18 years of age to become your

executor, including your spouse, partner or children. An executor of your will can also be a beneficiary. It’s possible to appoint two people to act as joint executors. If you are having difficulty choosing an executor, or you want someone independent, you can appoint a

solicitor, accountant or a person from a trustee company. New Way Lawyers Corinda 3278 3992, Capalaba 3245 5033. Web newwaylawyers. com.au.

are coming in 2017

IN FOUR months’ time, many Australian age pensioners will have their Centrelink entitlement reduced with changes to come into effect on January 1, 2017. Announced in the 2015 Federal Budget, the changes have been passed into law and about 300,000 people will be affected. Of these, about 100,000 could lose their pension benefit. Changes from January 1, 2017 include: ■ Assets value you can have in addition to your family home to qualify for a full pension will increase from $286,500 to $375,000 for home-owner couples. ■ The maximum value of assets retired couples can hold outside of the family home and still qualify for a part-pension will reduce from $1.175 million to $814,250. ■ The value of assets you can have in addition to your family home to qualify for a full pension will increase from $202,000 to $250,000 for single homeowners.

Seniors News

PENSION CHANGES: Some pensioners will be better off, some won’t.

■ The taper rate, which is the fortnightly amount by which a person’s pension entitlement decreases under the assets test, will increase from $1.50 to $3 per $1000 of assets over the lower threshold. Based on these changes, the government estimates that 91,000 people will lose entitlement to the pension, 235,000 people will have their pension reduced and 170,000

people will receive a pension increase. Who will be better off under these changes? ■ Couples who own their own home and have additional assets of less than $451,500 will get a higher pension. ■ Couples who don’t own their own home and have assets up to $699,000. ■ Singles who own their own home and have additional assets of less than $289,500.

■ Singles who don’t own their own home and who have less than $537,000. All people affected by these changes will still be eligible for the Commonwealth Health Seniors Card (CSHC) or the Health Care Card.
