NEW START: Grayham Bickley is a happy organ recipient enjoying life.

Living, loving life JIM FAGAN
GRAYHAM Bickley doesn’t waste a moment, he understands the value of every single breadth. Twelve years ago Grayham (70) of Peregian Springs was told he had six weeks to live. His pulmonary fibrosis disease was now critical
and he needed a double lung transplant. “Luckily, a donor was found and I was rushed to the Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane. I was 58 when I was given this gift of life and I promised myself I was going to try and make every moment mean something.”
Since then Grayham has developed considerable talents. He is an accomplished wildlife photographer, an author, a malt whisky buff, a painter, a poet, and only last year retired as a consultant for lightning protection on major buildings. He has reluctantly just
given up driving his 1979 Ford Escort in motor sport events like the Noosa Hill Climb and Queensland Raceway and is also a life member of the Noosa Beach Classic Car Club. “I’m pretty much aware of my fragility,” he told Seniors. “It’s very good if patients in terms of longevity live 18 years.
Some people who were transplanted after me have died.” During his earlier life in Sydney, Grayham was a radio announcer, theatre, TV soaps and film actor and counts among his credits working with director Bruce Beresford. CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

DON’T let age dictate who you are. Nor what stories you tell or pictures you publish. So today, you will see from our new-look newspaper we have followed that dictum and backed it up with some fine examples of people who have forgotten about numbers, raised their hand above the crowd and found their own unique form of expression. I trust our new design expresses the vitality, wit and fun of these authentic people. When Brendan Foley’s retirement plans didn’t

important for joyful longevity, including lifelong learning and a sense of humour. For example he described one of his 103-year-old father-in-law’s last conversations. While he was in hospital the nurse inquired: “So you have three children.” “For now,” he replied. This newspaper has not been around as long as Professor Kalache’s father-in-law. But we aim to have the stuff it takes to make it, including a rather cheeky sense of humour. Enjoy!
WELCOME to our new look Seniors. We haven’t made too many changes but after 18 years it was time our paper underwent a little facelift. We’d love to know what you think. In this edition we take a close look at the world of organ donation, as I met with a double lung transplant recipient,
Grayham Bickley, who 12 years ago had only six weeks to live. Speaking of health, wellbeing and fitness, those issues are very much on the mind of Sunshine Coast Council. We exclusively announce its new initiative, Heart Week, to be launched at Kawana on April 30. A special expo will offer a choice of 24 activities, all designed to maintain a
healthy lifestyle. We also take a look at Anzac Day and talk to Leon Brown, a 91-year-old warrior of the air who flew in two world wars plus the Cold War. We also feature Eumundi’s Spirit Orb – the tribute to the town’s 20 Anzacs who didn’t come home – which will be unveiled on April 25. There’s our huge range of information on clubs,
activities and pictures from across the Coast. Of course, our pictures and stories are also online. Check out www. seniorsnews.com.au and www.facebook.com/ seniornews. Life after family tragedy ❝ Jim Fagan
SOMEWHERE in Australia there are people saying a prayer of thanks to Carmel Cheers and her late husband, Graham. Graham was 60 when he died six years ago from a massive stroke, but as he and Carmel were both registered with Medicare as organ donors, she didn’t hesitate in giving permission to the hospital doctors to remove his liver and both kidneys and take tissue samples. Carmel, 59, of Sippy Downs, is a workplace health and safety adviser, and she described for seniors how she was giving a training course in Brisbane when she got word to call Nambour Hospital because the intensive care surgeon wanted to speak to her. “When I met the doctor at the hospital, there was another lady in the room, and I sensed that she was more there for me than anything else. “So I knew before anyone said anything, this is not going to be good. “I asked the usual, ‘Are there any operations, treatments, medications’
I knew before anyone said anything, this is not going to be good. ... I said, ‘Are you going to ask for his organs?’ Both looked a bit surprised, and I guess relieved that I had raised the subject.
and was told they could, of course, try, but they believed the damage from the stroke had gone too far. “I said, ‘Are you going to ask for his organs?’ “Both looked a bit surprised, and I guess relieved that I had raised the subject.” Carmel said Graham was a quiet man and he believed organ donation was the right thing to do. “He would have felt he had done a lot in his life, but this was the best thing he would ever do.” Graham’s organs went to several recipients, but
Carmel doesn’t know who they are. About a year after Graham died, she received a note from DonateLife Qld saying the recipients had sent cards of thanks. She was asked whether she want to see them, but she declined. “I didn’t feel they should have to send me anything. All I wanted to know was they were still going strong.” She regards highly the support from the hospital and DonateLife. “There was a whole team of people available for me and they were there for me as much or as little as I wanted.” One year after Graham’s death, she went to the annual service of remembrance DonateLife organises for donor families and transplant recipients. She took home an azalea and planted it in her garden to remember Graham. “Since then I have attended all the services and I have an azalea to mark each one. Now, at weekends I can sit in my Graham garden and think of happier times.”

Become a donor today YOUR chances aren’t good if you need an organ transplant. There are nearly three times the number of people waiting for an organ donation as there are donors, as is shown by the latest Australian figures from the Australian and New Zealand Organ Donor registry. The figures reveal in the 12 months to December last year there were 435 actual deceased donors, with 1241 transplant recipients. As at February this year
there are 1516 people on the waiting list, including 1120 who need a kidney, 176 waiting for a liver and 132 waiting for a lung. According to DonateLife Queensland’s spokesperson Kate Stodart the pool could be widened if our elderly opted to become organ donors. “You’re never too old or too sick to become a donor,” she said. ■ To register your consent to donate sign on to Australian Organ Donor Register administered through Medicare.

THE Fair Go4Pensioners Alliance has attacked the Sunshine Coast Council’s rates concessions policy as a system that takes from the poor and gives to the rich. Members are upset and want to know why pensioners who move into assisted lease accommodation in a retirement village get no rate relief while the neighbour next door who owns the unit does. They have sent a petition to the council in support of the 17 Gracemere residents at Peregian Springs affected by the policy. Alliance spokesman John Davies told Seniors the Gold Coast, Moreton Bay, Ipswich and Douglas Shire provided a rebate to pensioners living in lifetime-leased accommodation even
❝
While living in their own home, they have received rate rebates for donkey’s years. As soon as they move into a serviced apartment leased under a community title scheme, they lose the benefits. It doesn’t make sense. though they were required to pay rate contributions through their retirement villages. Mr Davies said the people who were affected were long-time Sunshine
Coast residents who had paid rates all their lives and were now in their 70s, 80s and 90s. “While living in their own home, they have received rate rebates for donkey’s years. As soon as they move into a serviced apartment leased under a community title scheme, they lose the benefits. It doesn’t make sense.” A spokesman for Sunshine Coast Council said council operated a pensioner concession scheme as did the Queensland Government. The concession is not offered to pensioners who live in a leased unit within a community title scheme as they are not the owners of the property. “Council will be reviewing pensioner concessions as part of the 2016/17 annual budget process.”

Discover Nambour: past-present NAMBOUR as we know it today would feel like another world entirely to the town’s founding members. Queen St has been at the forefront of trend setting in Nambour for years, but in the past few months Howard St and Currie St have boomed with stylish, new-age cafes and a steadily growing night life, set to rival Ocean St in Maroochydore. The Nambour Activation Plan was adopted by the Sunshine Coast Council last year. The “people’s tram” is on the right track to becoming a world first in the heart of the town as the Sunshine Coast Council defied balance sheets last year to go with passion and community spirit in supporting the project. Better connections within the town and the showgrounds are in the works too, as well as a
number of other projects to help revitalise the historic town. The work to get Nambour beating again comes with much support after businesses experienced a severe downturn from the demolition of the Moreton Sugar Mill in 2004. Once the heart of the Sunshine Coast region, Nambour’s thriving business calls for a celebration of its rich history. The Nambour District Historical Museum has an exciting and wide ranging collection which not only encapsulates that aspect of the town but all of the other components which collectively have led to the vibrant community which thrives today, including major industries such as sugar cane, telecommunications and health. To celebrate the National Trust Heritage Festival the museum will present a special display
featuring photographs, objects, videos and the history of the locomotives that once worked at the now defunct Moreton Central Sugar Mill. Stalls, raffles and refreshments will all be available on the day. This promises to be a great opportunity to relive and revive the history of the local area and its people Celebrate your local history and step back in time at the Nambour and District Historical Museum and experience life through the generations since the first settlers arrived. LIFE as it was lived by three generations of a Glass House Mountains family will be just one of the featured presentations during the Sunshine Coast Council’s Heritage Discovery Weekend at the end of this month. Seventeen museums and heritage organisations from Caloundra to Nambour and points between will celebrate the Coast’s rich history from April 30 to May 1. Prominent will be the state heritage-listed Bankfoot House at 1988 Old Gympie Road in the Glass House Mountains, which dates from 1868 and was built as a lunch stop and accommodation for the Cobb and Co service between Brisbane and Gympie following the discovery of gold there the previous year. William and Mary Grigor and their nine children were the first to settle there, followed by the Burgess and Ferris families. Ron Gillinder is president of Friends of Bankfoot House, and he told Seniors the house was of important historical significance.

Pension recipients including veterans, their partners, war widows and widowers across Australia saw the increase applied from March 20. Due to pension rates being calculated on a daily basis, the first pension paid after the indexation, on March 31, comprised both the old and new rates. Supporting older workers
THE release of the Intergenerational Report confirms the government’s continued intention to cut the age pension, highlights the need for more focus on combating age discrimination and having a more dynamic workforce participation policy, and reaffirms the need for a comprehensive retirement incomes review, said leading seniors’ advocate COTA Australia. COTA Australia chief executive Ian Yates said population and demographic changes heralded “the age of the senior” in Australia, which
should be celebrated. “The ageing population means we are going to be forced to better value older people in our society as we will need to rely on them to balance future budgets. A productive future of Australia will need to be a productive older Australia,” Mr Yates said. “Right now, a quarter of people on the Newstart job-seeking allowance are over 50 – one-third of the long- term unemployed – and despite best efforts, many of them simply can’t find employment,” he said. “Many languish for

years on Newstart and move straight onto the age pension. “If we need older Australians to work longer, there will need to be more sophisticated measures and incentives put in place to break down discrimination against older people and encourage employers to keep them on.” Mr Yates said COTA welcomed the government saying it was open to alternative measures to bring the Budget back to surplus. “We look forward to a constructive dialogue with the government.”
IS THERE prejudice against older people applying for jobs? That is the most common question at my seminars on how to get a job or start a business. The answer is simple: “Absolutely! So what are you going to do about it?” The choice is stark: keep trying for jobs but meanwhile buy or start up a business. The alternative is an unemployment benefit, but even that is hard to retain as the government (rightly, in my view) demands you hunt for any job, no matter your prior experience. Business brokers and business-for-sale advertisements can be found online or in local newspapers.
But be warned. Sunshine Coast senior accountant, Val Smart, tells of many retirees seeking advice on purchasing a shopfront in a glamorous area: Val does the sums: “You could be making a couple of bucks an hour,” he forecast. With no regard for those numbers, the purchase is made, and back many crawl, superannuation gone, this time to listen to his advice. Alternatively, you can set up a business. Again arrogance can get in the way. Take cleaning as an example. Is it beneath you? If you clean a property so it is spotless, your reputation will spread. Cleaning jobs will pour in through word of mouth. You then hire cleaners,
promote the business, and with persistence, could become like a Compass or Sodexo, both major cleaning companies worth millions. Or do people’s books. Many tradies just like to do the trade and leave the books to someone else. I know of at least a thousand such business ideas. It can be easy and hard, but being “hard” is just a thought. Simply jump the next hurdle. Anna Day, a former business journalist, runs courses on how to get a job or start a business. She is the author of 1000 Business Ideas to Start with Next to Nothing. Retirees going off grid Gail Forrer
Gail.Forrer@seniorsnewspaper.com.au
❚ IT hasn’t taken a village to make it happen, instead just one man has formed a village, albeit a small one, of his own making. Brendan Foley’s vision materialised as a small group of older people living together, off-grid, working at individual chores, sharing the costs of food and essentials on a rural acreage. The 4.5acre property, called Foley Farm, definitely has shades of a 1970s style commune. But the former businessman and long-time Noosa resident has reinvented the concept of communal living to suit a group of baby boomers. He said retirement gave him the time to think about suitable living arrangements for his generation. In many respects, he found a negative narrative attached to retirees. “So I wondered if retirees could lessen their public take and satisfy their self-esteem by becoming self sufficient,” he said. Brendan had just retired
and was keeping busy building what was initially intended as a weekender on his acreage north of Noosa. In a moment of serendipity, his realised that the building job was just too big for him alone. His ongoing thoughts about alternative, retirement accommodation married up and he saw an opportunity to create an alternative viable living arrangement on his block. He came up with a proposition he believed would appeal to single, retired people, in an age bracket that was young enough to do their share of work – hence the focus on baby boomers (those born between 1946–64). “If I could offer a standalone sleeping space and communal living space, would there be interest? An advertisement on www.flatmates.com.au described the living situation and requirements and sparked immediate interest. The project has received council affirmations and abides by local government building by-laws.

CALLING BABY BOOMERS: The outdoor communal dining area.
Brendan’s own research has seen the installation and development of solar power, wastewater treatment and DIY building solutions. “The farm is totally off the grid with a solar system and battery bank. “There is a fully enclosed wastewater treatment plant emitting just clean water, a deep spring water bore and rain collection,” he said.

Brendan’s definition of a Foley Farm: ❚ Single, retired, active baby boomers are the ideal ‘farm hand’. ❚ There are six chores required for a farm community to become self sufficient: – Fruit and veggie growing. – Kitchen control and shopping for supplies. – Pantry stocking of the farm’s produce for later consumption. – Fishing the local lakes and ocean as well as an on-site aquatic supply. – Small animal care for meat and egg supply. – Handyman care of farm buildings and equipment.

Gay-friendly retirement is now a reality Linton Estate for LGBTI community “It’s about giving back to all the people who have contributed...
Gail.Forrer@seniorsnewspaper.com.au
TWENTY-SEVEN years ago, Peter Dickson sat with friends around a dinner table in the front room of his Yarraville (Vic)house. The group talked about ageing, living arrangements, what people like themselves would do and finally the solution of a retirement village for like-minded people. In 2016, that conversation is on the verge of becoming concrete – or should we say bricks and mortar. Linton Estate is being touted as the world’s first LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual, intersexual) over-50s living community with the flexibility to be a weekend retreat or a place to retire. Linton Estate was founded by Peter Dickson, who has long held a vision for building a residential village for the LGBTI and “straight friendly” community. Based in the rural township of Ballan, in the Moorabook Shire, it’s 50 minutes west of Melbourne. Part of the attraction of the site is its proximity to the township, which has cafes, a post office, retail stores, a hospital and GP super clinic. As a fifth-generation Ballan local, founder Peter Dickson sees the village as an employment generator and the means
of slowing the move from country to city. “My parents would say, if you don’t want to live here, then how can you expect others to?” he said. “I agree, that’s why I am here.” Mr Dickson previously worked in investment banking and has overseen small developments. He currently works with the Salvation Army. Eight years ago, he created another life for himself – as the Linton Estate developer. If people ask him why it has taken so long, he has a simple answer. “Well, it’s just only been me doing it,” he said. Nevertheless, Mr Dickson is keen to acknowledge the people who have backed him to get to this point. “It’s about giving back to all the people who have contributed and also leaving a legacy,” he said. While acknowledging there had been some – not unexpected – negativity along the way, it hadn’t been enough to stop the show. “I think that no matter who you are or what you do, there is always someone who will give you grief,” he explained.

DomaCom has begun a campaign to crowdfund the Linton Estate in Ballan, Victoria’s first purpose-designed residential homes for the gay community. http://www.domacom .com.au/wp-content/ uploads/2016/03/ Linton.gif DomaCom, is the only ASIC-registered fractional property investment platform in Australia as a crowdfunding campaign, to join in the development by fractionalizing it on its platform, and has already been met with significant support with bids reaching 70% of the target for Stage 1 land acquisition of $650,000. Stage 2 will raise a further $1.8 million to complete rezoning and civil works and Stage 3 the build and development of boutique townhouses. The entire projects is expected to be finished in two years at a total cost of more than $30 million. Financially he is thankful for DomiCom and Perpetual Trust for coming on board to raise the money now needed for the build. For information visit www.lintonestate.com.au.

MINISTER’S MESSAGE CORALEE O’ROURKE THE Palaszczuk Government is one step closer to making Queensland a more age-friendly community. It has received more than 9000 responses to a public survey that asked Queenslanders to suggest ways to welcome and support seniors in the community. The survey highlighted

many key issues, such as access to transport, employment and information technology, to help inform the new seniors strategy – “Queensland: an age-friendly community”. An age-friendly community encourages people of all ages to take part in community activities. It is a place where people are treated with respect, regardless of their age or ability. It is a place where they can stay in touch with the people they care about and can find appropriate
support services that meet their needs. Most importantly, age-friendly communities are highly beneficial for older people who are at risk of social isolation. In March, I had the privilege of meeting world leading authority on ageing Professor Alexandre Kalache to discuss the survey results and the new strategy. Professor Kalache pioneered the concept of “active ageing” and developed the Global Movement on Age Friendly
Cities while he was the head of the World Health Organisation’s Ageing and Life Course Program. Now the director of the International Centre for Policies on Ageing in Brazil, Professor Kalache continues to help build a deeper appreciation within communities for the contribution and needs of older people. I was delighted to meet with Professor Kalache to discuss how we could increase our activities to develop, implement and promote the age-friendly approach to community in Queensland.
Gender parity in aged care impacted by cuts ON INTERNATIONAL Women’s Day, Leading Age Services Australia (LASA), the voice of aged care, pledged its support for gender parity and said recent funding cuts to workforce training and development by the government had been detrimental to women.
“Workforce development is a priority area for aged care and a critical component of a national workforce strategy, but if we are serious about gender parity at a national level we must recognise and address existing barriers in our own industry,” LASA
CEO Patrick Reid said. “Millions of dollars have been cut from aged care workforce development and training in recent years, mostly to the detriment of women. “While women form the overwhelming majority of the aged care workforce, they continue to be
under-represented at board and executive management level. On the other hand, due to existing scopes of practice, nursing staff who do not wish to move into management roles are faced with limited career pathways,” Mr Reid said.

Longevity to shape policies Ageing population need a voice Gail Forrer Seniors Newspaper Group Editor
AGEING EXPERT: Dr Alexandre Kalache urged seniors to speak up
PHOTO: SUPPLIED
The WHO Age-friendly Cities Framework The WHO (World Health Organisation) Age-friendly Cities framework developed in the Global Age-friendly Cities Guide proposes eight interconnected domains that can help to identify and address barriers to the well-being and participation of older people. These domains overlap. Eg: respect is
reflected in the accessibility of public buildings and spaces and in the range of opportunities that the city offers to older people for social participation, entertainment, volunteering or employment. The lack of affordable public transport for example isolates older

people who no longer drive and makes participation in community life difficult, increasing the risk of isolation and loneliness. When transport is available and adapted to the needs of seniors, both in terms of scheduling and destinations, it enhances mobility and facilitates belonging.
GLOBAL leader in ageing policy Professor Alexandre Kalache told an industry group the seniors age-group should have a voice that will challenge, speak up and shape social policies. He advised policymakers to “listen to the people, they will tell you, don’t make assumptions”. The Brazilian born, co-president of the International Longevity Centre Global Alliance and former director of the World Health Organisation global program on ageing was guest speaker at a recent Queensland Government sponsored forum on the development of age-friendly communities that prioritise and address the needs and aspirations of older people. He listed the big issues
as health care, life-long learning, income, social participation and security of food and shelter. “But this is not about ageing, it’s about longevity,” he said. He called Australia a land of migrants and asked for the recognition of the uniqueness of problems associated with ageing in a foreign land. He recommended government policies for migrants who have also left a legacy and made contributions. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Dr Kalache references his own country to define the demands of longevity. “Do you remember the song The Girl from Ipanema,” he asked. “Well that girl today is 76 and she is looking after her mother with Alzheimer’s.” He asked the younger generations not to be selfish, but to be inclusive and imaginative.
He emphasised the importance of intergenerational activities and gender balance. In terms of care giving, he said: “If a society is to be sustainable, we cannot just rely on women. “We must bring men into these roles.” Audience member Southern Cross University Professor Colleen Cartwright offered another imaginative step. “Instead of just childcare in the workplace,” she said. “Let’s have care for young and old.” Council for the Aging CEO Mark Tucker- Evans said businesses such as Bunnings and Westpac were congratulated for their recognition of older workers. IF I read another popular author writing a memoir (or essay or column or even just a paragraph in a newsletter) about the angst of turning 50, I’ll go bonkers. I wrote about that subject 20 years ago. You could say I led the way. Not that I’ve minded reading about some of my favourite authors turning 50, I’ve actually November at the Headland Bowls Club. The Probians’ club is small in numbers, but that does not inhibit the members as there are many functions organised to Brisbane theatres, luncheons, bus tours, etc. We are unable to interest members to become involved in serving on the committee. This seems to be a problem with the majority of social clubs, whether Probus, bowls,
children’s sport, etc – it does not appear to be an age factor as people grow older, but it appears to be a growing phenomenon across all age groups. 2016 committee President: Patricia de Waardt; Vice-President: Glennis Hart; Secretary: Pat Cooney; Treasurer: Roselyn Coe; Committee: Judy Crofts, Joan Evans, Trudy Mackrory, Jan Parks.

The only thing upsetting about turning 70 for me was the complete and utter lack of recognition. But I did expect some sort of acknowledgement from my family – namely the husband. For my 60th birthday he had a white stretch limo waiting at my front gate. So on my 70th, when the husbandsaid a quiet: “Happy Birthday” and I said, “well, is the limo at

Laguna Estate - a lifestyle choice ADVERTISEMENT
Is ‘grandma’s ghetto’ your idea of a retirement village? If so, stop right there! There is nothing further from the truth. In the past, most residents entered these villages aged in their seventies as part of a move to downsize, decrease maintenance responsibilities, experience a greater sense of safety and security, or for health and lifestyle reasons. Today, younger retirees from age 55 are seeing the benefits of relocating to a retirement village, with the emphasis on lifestyle and making the move a liberating experience. To those who say that they are not ready for such a move, many of the residents at Laguna Estate say that they wish they had made the decision earlier. It has given them the freedom to travel, visit family or just pursue new hobbies without any of the worries they previously had with the upkeep and security issues of their previous home. side between common destinations. Due to the terrain of the countryside these canals require various loch systems to raise or lower the boats and Stuart explained how the various lochs worked. Interestingly, there are 44 lochs on the Thames River, all of which are beautifully landscaped with extensive lawns and flower gardens. When the boats are going through the lochs they attract many curious spectators, which the boaties refer to as “Goozlers”.

GOVERNMENT legislated changes from January 1 next year will reduce the maximum asset thresholds used to calculate eligibility for the aged pension. It means that more than 300,000 age pensioners will have their entitlements cut, with just under 100,000 of those losing all current entitlements. Here are two examples of the impact: Example 1: A couple with an investment property worth $350,000, $75,000 in the bank and $400,000 in their super account, who currently receive a part pension of $224p/f each or $5811pa. After January 2017, they will lose the whole of that part pension payment. Their household income will be reduced by $11,622 a year. Example 2: A couple with lesser investments, $80,000 in the bank and $500,000 in their super account, currently receive a part pension of $407p/f
PETER BOLITHO each or $10,589pa. After January 1 2017, they will lose $5343 of that part pension payment. If one of this couple dies after January 2017, the remaining partner’s pension would be eliminated. There are ways of reducing assets to minimise the effects of the proposed changes, including spending money on the family home; gifting some funds to family; or investing in a lifetime annuity. Each of these options have limitations. Gifting limits restrict how much you can give away and current investment returns for annuities are significantly lower than in past years, as well as the obvious requirement to either move funds from accounts
into less profitable accounts or sell assets to generate funds to gift, spend or invest in the annuity. Another option is to use equity release to replace the lost pension income. A loan is secured by a mortgage over your home, however, you do not have to make regular repayments to the loan. Equity release is specifically designed to assist older people (over 60 years of age) to better manage their finances during their retirement years. Funds can be accessed by a lump sum withdrawal (not recommended to replace income), by instalments, or as a line of credit. This last option allows the borrower to access the funds on an as required basis, or to choose not to use the loan in years of good investment returns. For more details about equity release, phone Peter Bolitho on 0412 078 785.

Grumpy old men
Male menopause: is it real?
GOOD MEDICINE Dr MICHAEL GILLMAN AS MEN become older, we are often accused of going through a male menopause. Some of us become tired, irritable, lack motivation and have declining sex drives. This is where the term “grumpy old men” comes from. So do males go through menopause like females do and should all grumpy old men be taking testosterone replacement therapy? The medical term for low testosterone is hypogonadism and it is present in 5% of men. To make a diagnosis, there must be a low level of testosterone in
two blood tests. There must be signs of low testosterone such as lack of facial and body hair, loss of muscle mass, weak bones such as osteoporosis, amongst other signs. Finally, there must be symptoms such as tiredness, lethargy, low sex drive and difficulty concentrating. Testosterone therapy is only used when the testicles have failed and are no longer producing sufficient amounts of the hormone. If this is not the cause, then testosterone therapy should not be used. So if you or a loved one is a “grumpy old man”, see your local doctor and arrange for some proper testing. For more information see www.DrMichael Gillman.com.

ORGANISERS of The Woodford Planting festival said they were welcoming a new era for the long-running event with an ambitious programme recently released featuring two acclaimed international artists. Taiwanese master bamboo artist Wang Wen-Chih will return to Woodfordia in partnership with Sydney arts collective Cave Urban to host the first of The Planting’s new masterclass series. Participants will have the opportunity to co-create a large scale bamboo artwork using a traditional weaving method admired in two sculptures at Woodfordia, Woven Sky and Woven Cloud constructed for Woodford Folk Festivals 2013–14 and 2014–15. Canadian troubadour Old Man Luedecke is a well-anticipated feature of The Planting’s evening concert and entertainment series. The recent Juno award nominee will be joined in the evenings by Melbourne darlings All Our Exes Live in Texas, The Crooked Fiddle Band and harmonic duo Winterbourne, as well as a
host of comedy, films, ceremony and The Great Planting Bushdance keeping the Woodfordia streets alive each evening. Deputy festival director Amanda Jackes said audiences have driven the evolution of the festival. “The decision to expand The Planting festival a couple of years ago has been met with the most positive support we could have imagined” she said. “We know that our audiences are seeking authentic experiences. and dumping was at last showing signs of a decrease. But sadly about three tonnes of illegal dumping was still cleaned up from Beckmans Rd and other bushland reserves once again. The hinterland was fully behind Clean Up Australia Day, with sites in Kin Kin, Cooran, Cooroy, Eumundi, Boreen Point, and the usual big turn out in Pomona, as well as a Clean Up site at Federal being organised for the first time.
It was disappointing to see the number of tyres dumped in our bushland. I also remain puzzled by finds such as a 2m-long fish tank and other furniture that could have been donated for free through Briteside’s recycle shop at the Eumundi Rd facility to be resold to support a local not for profit organisation. As always, many thanks to those that took part and supported the cleaning up of our beautiful part of Australia. Joe Jurisevic.

Pilot Leon’s three wars ❝ The fighter pilot will lay a wreath for Legacy on Anzac Day at Tewantin cenotaph Jim Fagan
NINETY-one-year-old Leon Brown, as honorary treasurer, has kept tabs on the finances of Sunshine Coast Legacy for the past 33 years and on Anzac Day, Monday, April 25, he will lay a wreath for the organisation at Tewantin cenotaph. And no doubt, while thinking of the 1500 widows of ex-servicemen that our Coast Legacy helps, he will spare a thought about how lucky he is to be alive. Leon’s time as a fighter pilot with the RAAF could be a script for a “Top Gun” movie. He sprinted for his life as his burning Kitty Hawk exploded in fragments in 1944 after a fatal mid-air collision; he flew Mustangs in 1950 at the height of the war in Korea and in the early ‘60s, during the Cold War between the US and the Soviet Union, he piloted
B66s for the US Air Force. Leon retired in 1975 as a Wing Commander after 33 years with the RAAF. He enlisted in the air force on December 1942 and after Tiger Moth and Wirraway training graduated as a pilot in August 1943. “I was 19 then and I wanted to go to a fighter squadron like all the other cadets. Instead, I was posted to be a flying instructor.” At Narromine air force base, he tested repaired Tiger Moths and in 1944 he was sent to 82 Squadron, Townsville, to fly Kitty Hawks. In March he had a mid-air collision with another Kitty Hawk which crashed into him from below. “We were practising line of stern chase formation flying. I was leader and this other guy came up from behind and hit me. He was killed instantly, unfortunately. “He smashed up my aeroplane and my instant

reaction was to bail out. “I got half way out and my knees knocked the joystick. I discovered I had control and I could still fly the plane. “There was smoke everywhere and I was at 7000 feet just east of Bowley River air strip

on those days. “Then on my 21st birthday my squadron was equipped with Mustangs. “It was the first time I had flown them. “It was a beautiful plane. I celebrated with my mates that night and we drank all the beer in the sergeants’ mess. “Just after the war in 1946 I was with 77 Squadron in Sarawak, Borneo and we were ordered to fly three squadrons of Mustangs to Japan. “My squadron ran into bad weather – dense rain and fog. Three Mustangs crashed and the pilots were killed. “In 1950 war in Korea started on July 1and my 77 Squadron was diverted from Japan to Korea to join United Nations’ forces. I was 26. “The first week we were there our flight commander, who used to fly with me in Townsville, was killed by anti-aircraft
fire. On July 9 our commanding officer was shot down and killed. Shattered all of us. “I flew 33 missions – ground attacks with rockets and cannon mostly on road transport and troop concentrations. “The North was sending occupying forces into the south and that’s where we were doing most of our work. “The weather was getting cold and by December there was so much snow and ice we couldn’t fly any more.” For the next few years Leon, by now a flight lieutenant, worked as a recruiting officer, flew Lincolns and was posted to 82 Squadron flying Canberras. In 1958 he got a posting to the US to fly weather reconnaissance missions and flew B66s during the Cold War years and the Cuban missile crisis until 1963.

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland that wraps around the urethra at the point of the bladder. Prostate gland enlargement can be caused by prostate cancer, but 80% of the time it is attributable to benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). As men age, the prostate gland increases in size, making BPH one of the most common age-related conditions in men. The enlarged gland puts pressure on the urethra, acting like a partial clamp and thus causing numerous urinary symptoms. BPH affects more than 50% of Australian men in their sixties and 90% of men above the age of seventy.
that enable flowering plants to reproduce) of various plants, including rye grass. Magnus Shield has anti-inflammatory properties that decrease swelling and improve urine flow. Magnus Shield also works on the urinary tract by relaxing the smooth muscle tone of the urethra, thus improving urine flow, increasing bladder muscle contraction to push the urine out, and relaxing the sphincter muscles, which help hold the urine in the bladder. Together, these actions would improve the urine flow rate and reduce the amount of urine remaining in the bladder after urination, thereby decreasing urinary frequency.

Standing up for retirees
ASSOCIATION of Independent Retirees (AIR) recommendations to the Treasurer for this year’s Federal Budget: Recommendation 1: that in view of the severe reduction in the income of self-funded retirees, the age-related compulsory drawdown / retirement income percentage be halved as it was on similarly difficult occasions in the past for retirees. Recommendation 2: that the Government moderates the compulsory drawdown percentage of retirees’ retirement capital to take account of their increasing longevity so that they can continue to live comfortably in their latter years without the fear of the premature exhaustion of their retirement savings. Recommendation 3: that the sale of productive assets to be transferred into the tax-free income stream product should be exempt from capital gains tax for those who have been self-employed and / or those who did not have superannuation available
to them, and wish to commence a superannuation fund to access a tax-free income stream product. Recommendation 4: that the rebate reducing CPI indexation of Health Insurance rebates that was introduced in 2013 be immediately scrapped and the percentage % rebates for senior Australians be reintroduced in full. Recommendation 5: that the 2016/17 Budget must address the gaps and dysfunction in our $140 billion a year health arrangements to maintain the long-term viability of the health care system, and to ensure adequate, equitable health care for all Australians. Recommendation 6: that the PBS Safety Net threshold for single retirees be set at 65% of the couples / families threshold level or at the same % difference between the threshold income limit to receive the age pension for a single person and a couple. Recommendation 7: that the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card for single retirees be set at %

Recommendation 8: that the Government will not extend the incorporation of either the assets or income of superannuants, any further than the recent changes to incorporate indexation of the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card, in any changes to eligibility criteria for benefits for retirees. Recommendation 9: That the Government reconsiders the part age pension taper rate due to come into effect on January 1, 2017, which will particularly impact on some existing part-pensioners who rely primarily on their own assets and investments but need the top-up of the part age pension to maintain their current income and retirement living standard. SIMPLE STEPS: Assistance makes aged care planning less daunting. PHOTO: LIGHTHAUNTER

WE HAVE a steady flow of inquiry at our office regarding aged care – it’s technically part of good estate planning, and is commonly a daunting task for people. A typical scenario would be of an elderly family member who had been managing quite well with their day-to-day living, and an event occurs that renders them in need of long-term care. It may be a fall, a stroke, the onset of dementia, or some similar debilitating situation. Changes occurred in the structure of aged care several years ago that have made it more a “user-pays” area. The new system on the surface looks difficult to work through. However, if you follow a process and make inquiries, it certainly isn’t insurmountable. Remember not to get baffled by the acronyms – they are something dreamed up by a government boffin! If this ends up being thrown in your lap, just take a deep breath and follow these five basic steps. There is website provided by the Federal Government, and this will give you some tips and the calculations that can all be done for you at the click of a button at www.myagedcare.gov.au. The first step is to have an assessment done by an ACAT (Aged Care Assessment Team). Then locate a suitable facility – there is a list available on the website. It’s best to work out which ones seem to suit and then visit them and get a feel of the

Secret Mykonos taverna Treat yourself to a Greek dining experience that will rival all others
Ann Rickard
WHAT are the chances? You discover a tiny taverna on a Greek Island, so hidden it is invisible. It has no telephone, no electricity, no signage, a no reservations policy. You have to know someone who knows someone who knows someone else and is willing to tell you all about it. It is in a remote section of Mykonos, on a desolate hill amid a brown denuded landscape, blocked from sight beneath the bushy umbrella branches of a large tree. Three of us were determined to experience it after learning of its rustic charm in hushed whispers on a busy beach on the island. “It’s very small. It opens only for lunch. They cook enormous pork chops and delicious sword fish and giant baked potatoes on an open fire and the views over the sea are
wonderful but you might have to wait to get in, and if the food runs out, that’s it, they close.” Such pressure. But we were unwavering. We found it. A queue had formed outside. Opening time was 1pm and not a second before. When the clock struck one, the owner, a large handsome man looked over the top of a wall at the long line of desperate hopefuls outside, pointed at those he deemed first in line and said: “You, you, you and you.” We were in. And smug. The small bare tables, the inspiring simplicity of the mouth-watering food, the smell of the open grill fire, the glittering sea views, the haughty discern of the owner, and the strict policy that the baked potato came only with the pork, never with the swordfish, all made for such a vivid experience, I returned to Australia and wrote about it. I referred cheekily to the wonderful owner as The Potato Nazi. He had

refused to give our friend with the swordfish a potato despite our pleading and offers of extra payment. “No potato with the fish,” he said firmly and there was no question of negotiation. We had loved it very much and despite the tongue-in-cheek reference to The Potato Nazi, I wrote fondly of it. In my wildest dreams I could not have imagined someone from regional
Queensland would cut out the article, take it all the way to the remote
part of Mykonos, find the hidden taverna and brandish my story in front of The Potato Nazi. Really? What were the chances? He was not pleased when we returned the following year for another magical experience. With a livid face, he pointed at me. “You,” he thundered, “I don’t let you in.” Fortunately, after my pleas that the story really had been flattering in its mischief, he conceded and let us in where he produced my small story from a scrapbook and reluctantly said his wife thought I had described him perfectly. We have returned to the taverna every year
for a decade now on an annual pilgrimage because it is, quite simply, the most glorious Greek Island food experience. Other writers before and after me have written about this marvellous place - there was even a story in the New York Times, much to our owner’s feigned horror. The Potato Nazi has a soft heart. His taverna is small and despite the fish/potato policy, he loves to please everyone. and is uncomfortable about the queues. He even passes free wine in small pink aluminium containers over the wall to the people waiting outside. I’m not going to tell you the name of the taverna in case you print this out and take it to him. I really like my annual pilgrimage.

The owners have their own wood carving and furniture factory, evident in small decorative touches such as individual lampshades, screens and even doorknobs. Antiques abound throughout, and the overall feeling is like a family home. The outdoor shower and bath in most villas is fun to use in this tropical climate. Air-conditioning is available if you need it in the bedrooms, but we found it useful only during the daytime. The resort is particularly conscious of environmental sustainability, and includes extensive use of recycled timber (although one guest complained that a wooden railway sleeper was “too old”)! Other practices include the use of herbal products, minimum use of plastic, and segmented waste disposal. Santhiya has two dining areas: the main Chantara restaurant with quality
Thai and international cuisine; and By the Sea at beach and main pool level, with a bar and more informal menu. This resort makes a trip to Koh Phangan worthwhile. Back in Koh Samui for a few days, we’ve arrived at sister property Bo Phut Resort. Another member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, it’s located on Bo Phut Beach just a short walk from the popular Night Market, with its massive range of food stalls and craft sellers. If there’s one thing you should experience in Samui apart from all the outdoor sports activities and shopping, this is it. Bo Phut Resort itself is a haven of tranquillity away from the noisier parts of Samui. Its Thai-style bungalows are beautifully equipped with the most comfortable beds, inside and outside sitting areas and modern bathrooms. It’s so quiet here that we’re able to get plenty of rest before the long flight home via Kuala Lumpur. Visit www.thailand.net.au and www.slh.com.

IT SEEMS everybody’s heard of Koh Samui. It’s a well known tourist magnet in the Gulf of Thailand, right? An island with great beaches, food, markets, hotels and resorts? Yes, that’s all true. But there’s a twin sister island not far from Samui. Too far to swim, unless you’re an experienced channel swimmer, but just a short ferry ride away. It’s called Koh Phangan (pronounced Ko Par Narn). And it’s spectacular. I discovered Phangan about 30 years ago. There was little development then. Backpacker lodges all around the island, some on quite remote beaches, reachable only by longtail boat. Not too accessible in a medical emergency. But it’s funny how, despite this lack of access, the entire world made the annual pilgrimage to the Full Moon Festival on one tiny corner of the island. Do I remember that event? Not very well. Phangan has changed. No longer the exclusive haunt of backpackers, its natural attractions (which are considerable) are now enhanced by a huge range of activities and the full spectrum of accommodation choices right up to five-star level. We now find ourselves at the stunning Santhiya Resort, a 30-minute ride from the ferry port on the other side of the island, but well worth the bumps. Here, the general manager is on hand with musicians and staff to welcome guests – a sign of the personal service

Like daughter, like her mother
KEEPING up with a daughter such as personal trainer and TV personality Michelle Bridges would indeed require a certain level of fitness. But Maureen Partridge – who gives herself the number of “very, very, late 60s” is doing that with her own brand anti-ageing diet. It’s a change from how she was eating in her “early 60s” when a diagnosis of early osteoporosis prompted a diet rethink.
Care for your bones with Maureen’s meals MAUREEN’S meal plan includes hearty yet healthy home-cooked recipes that incorporate Pauls PhysiCAL milk for added calcium. Maureen’s favourites include home-baked “So many people think they’re getting enough calcium, but I’ve recently discovered that the average intake of calcium
fresh raspberry custard served with sliced nectarines, a long-standing Bridges family favourite, and zucchini, corn and chickpea fritters with fresh salsa. in women is 25-40% lower than recommended,” she said. Following in her daughter’s very active footsteps, Maureen goes
Corn and zucchini fritters with avocado salsa SERVES 2 INGREDIENTS Fritters: 3⁄4 cup drained canned chickpeas; 1 zucchini, grated; 1⁄2 cup drained canned corn kernels; 1⁄2 cup packed coriander leaves, finely chopped, extra, to serve; 2 green onions, sliced; 1 clove garlic, crushed; 1 tsp ground cumin; 1⁄3 cup, plus 1 tbs low fat milk; 1 egg; 3⁄4 cup self-raising flour; 1⁄4 tsp salt; olive oil
spray; sour light cream, to serve. Salsa: 1 tomato, diced; 1 avocado, diced; 1⁄4 small red onion, diced; 1 small red chilli, seeded, and finely chopped; 2 tsp lime juice. METHOD 1. Prepare salsa: Mix salsa and set aside. 2. Prepare fritters: Place chickpeas in food processor and process until finely chopped. Place in medium bowl. Add
zucchini, corn, coriander, green onions, garlic and cumin. Stir. Whisk milk and egg in separate bowl; add to chickpea mixture and stir. Stir in sifted flour and salt. 3. Cook: Spray non-stick pan with oil spray. Place over medium-high heat. Using 1⁄3 cup mixture per fritter, cook four fritters for three minutes each side, until golden. Serve with salsa and sour cream.

Salmon with salsa verde and mash SERVES: 2 INGREDIENTS Salmon: 2 x 150g salmon fillets, pin boned, skin on; 1⁄4 teaspoon salt; Olive oil spray. Salsa Verde: 1⁄2 cup firmly packed parsley leaves; 1⁄4 cup firmly packed tarragon leaves; 1 clove garlic, crushed; 1 tablespoon drained capers; 2 teaspoons Dijon-style mustard; 1 1⁄2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil; Ground black pepper. Creamy Mash: 2 medium potatoes (450g), peeled and cubed; 1⁄4 cup Pauls PhysiCAL low fat milk, warmed; 2 teaspoons light margarine.
METHOD 1. Make salsa verde. Place parsley and tarragon in a small food processor and process until finely chopped. Add all remaining salsa verde ingredients and process until well combined. Set aside. 2. Make creamy mash. Place potatoes in a saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring to the boil and cook for 20 minutes or until soft. Drain well. Place back in saucepan and mash well. Add milk and margarine and beat with a wooden spoon until creamy. Season to taste.
Cover and set aside to keep warm. 3. Cook. Pat salmon dry with kitchen paper, then rub skin with salt. Spray a large non-stick frying pan with olive oil spray. Place over a high heat until hot. Place salmon fillets in pan, skin side down and cook for 3 minutes, pressing down gently with an egg slice. Turn and reduce heat to medium. Cook for a further 2 minutes for medium, or to your liking. 4. Serve salmon with salsa verde, creamy mash and steamed vegetables.
BOOST YOUR CALCIUM: In a bid to help Australians boost their calcium levels, Pauls has partnered with health and fitness enthusiast Maureen Partridge to develop a Bone Health Boosting Meal and Exercise Plan featuring Pauls PhysiCAL Milk. See www.pauls.com.au to download the plan.

Reunited tenors about to tour Queensland It’s not every day you get the chance to see three former members of The Ten Tenors on stage. Three-piece ensemble Tenori features the talents of David Kidd, Craig Atkinson and Andrew Pryor, who toured internationally together as members of The Ten Tenors. “Andrew, Craig and I met at the Queensland Conservatorium just over 20 years ago,” David Kidd said. “It’s wonderful sharing the stage with gents I’ve known and worked with for two decades.” After some time apart working with Opera Australia, Opera Queensland and many of the country’s finest orchestras, the three former tenors reunited to form Tenori. Tenori will bring their sense of fun and sophistication to your favourite classics at the Logan Entertainment Centre on Tuesday,
April 19. “Queensland is the first place we toured with The Ten Tenors,” David said. “It means the world to us, so we’re calling it our World Tour of Queensland. “We’re travelling all the way from Cairns to just down the road. “Andrew lives about 10 minutes from the Logan Entertainment Centre.” With a combined 60 years of international experience in the industry, Tenori knows how to put on a dynamic, uplifting and hugely entertaining show. From the heights of Puccini to the glitz and swagger of Elvis or Bublé, they do it all and leave you wanting more. You can buy tickets for Tenori online at www.loganentertainment centre.com.au or from the LEC Box Office on 07 3412 5626 (open Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 4.30pm).

The challenge is to rearrange a crossword which has been broken into 25 sections. One letter has been given to get you started. Work out which 3x3 square fits in with that letter and write in the letters. You can also shade the black squares if you find it helpful. After completing the first 3x3 area, work out which square joins on to it, and continue until you have made a complete crossword.

Seventy-five happy birthdays for Maria
Seniors 39
Ann Rickard talks to one of her favourite role models, a sassy woman who is ageing far better than a bottle of fine wine RICE flakes, power naps, false eyelashes, sorbolene moisturiser. What could this mixed bunch possibly have in common? They are all included in Maria Venuti’s daily routine and they keep her fired with energy and looking show-biz glamorous even though she has just passed her 75th birthday. “Just write 75 once, darling,” Maria said during our fun interview. “No need to mention it again after that.” So we won’t. But sensible eating, lots of power naps, big fake eyelashes and the twice-daily slathering of moisturiser on face and décolletage keep Maria Venuti ready for the spotlight at any time of the day. “Darling, I can’t go past a beauty shop, especially when they have a 50% off sale,” she laughed. “I’ve just bought five more sets of eyelashes, lots of turquoise and gold eye shadow and more lipsticks.” In an entertainment career that has spanned 58 jam-packed years and seen Maria perform on stage both nationally and internationally, as well as star in a number of movies, she still has what it takes to steal the limelight. The Sicilian-born beauty with the bountiful cleavage made her first
singing performance at age 17, four years after she found the joy of make-up, false eyelashes and big hair. She has never stopped performing or wearing make-up since. Maria not only whips her audiences up to good times with enduring cabaret songs belted out in her unique sexy style, she makes them laugh and feel marvellous. “People are always coming up to me and thanking me for making them smile,” she said. “I love that. I get great adrenaline out of seeing people happy and smiling and saying ‘she’s just a bit crazy’. I like to create happiness.” That she does, never caring if it involves making fun of herself. At a performance in Noosa in a marquee on top of a hill, she arrived wearing flat shoes instead of her signature heels so she could carefully contemplate the rocky terrain leading to the marquee. As she stumbled over rocks towards the marquee she looked up to find her entire audience in the open-sided marquee watching her. “Daaaaaarling, I had to go into the marquee and change into my heels in front of everyone,” she said. “But it made everyone laugh and I loved that.” Becoming braver and less self-conscious is a

have that olive oil Sicilian skin so my décolletage hasn’t wrinkled yet,” she laughed. “I moisturise it twice a day. I do alternate between using expensive products and $6 stuff
Becoming braver and less self-conscious is a benefit of ageing Maria now enjoys... looks big,” she said. “You think ‘I am what I am’ and that is how I feel now. I think everyone should look hard in the mirror and find their own uniqueness and build on that. Everyone has something special.” Never holding back when it comes to over-the-top outfits, always those that show off her trademark generous bosom, has endeared Maria to thousands of people over the years. “I am lucky in that I

from the supermarket. “I always wear low-cut necklines. If I wear anything too high I feel claustrophobic. I have to let my girls out. It’s like taking a deep breath. It elevates me.” Sequins, feathers and way too much bling are as essential to Maria as oxygen. “I will wear black sequin pants and a sequin top out to lunch and diamante earrings in the day time,” she said. “I like to keep it interesting, flamboyant

but not garish ... although I don’t mind a bit of garish.” With non-stop invitations to perform, speak, consult or endorse, Maria never stops working. “I go hell for leather but I realise now I should take a step back, slow down ... but just a little bit. “My secret to keeping going is to take a little nap whenever I can wherever I am.” Maria is fortunate in that she can nod off for a few minutes in the back of a taxi which enables her to go from a celebrity breakfast on to a charity lunch and then a gala dinner in one hit. But she says for those who can’t just pop off to sleep for a few minutes, closing the eyes and thinking of something calm and peaceful is almost as good.
“Think of waves coming into the beach or something beautiful like that for a few minutes and it will re-energise you,” Maria needs every ounce of her impressive energy to keep up with her work load and the many charities she supports, including the Jeanne Little Alzheimer’s Fund. Maria’s list of celerity friends and supporters is as big as her hair and she maintains friendships with all of them and makes new friends easily. As for retirement? It’s a dirty word to Maria. “I will never retire,” she said. “There is a line in the song The Party’s Over. It goes: ‘take off your make-up, the party’s over, it’s all over my friend.’ I don’t believe in that. I am never taking off my make-up.”
