It’s hard to resist the very cheeky grins on the faces of two great Australian larrikins Bob Hawke and Max Gillies and of course that’s why they made front page followed by a story talking about Max Gillies’ performance at Noosa Long Weekend Festival (Page 3). Max and 40 years of satire HE IS not far off 75, but entertainer Max Gillies is approaching life with all the vigour of a man half his age. In July he will take his show, Once Were Leaders, to Noosa for the Noosa Long Weekend Festival, and it promises to entertain with all the hallmark wit and satire he is so famous for. Max Gillies was born in 1941, and became best known to us for his biting comedy series The Gillies Report in 1984 and The Gillies Republic in 1986 and then Gillies and Company in 1992. He was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia in 1990 and has not stopped working during a long and acclaimed career – and he shows no signs of slowing down. Once Were Leaders is a tribute to Gillies’ collaborators over 40-plus years of living on the periphery of politics.

It will be presented in two halves at the Noosa Long Weekend Festival, first revisiting favourite political monologues from his archive to celebrate the work of his writers, Don Watson, Patrick Cook, Guy Rundle and Heathcote Williams. The second half is more an informal conversation

Gillies has played political leaders going back as far as Bob Menzies... with the audience – an anecdotal reminiscence of a life lived in the satirical penumbra of the political sun. Gillies has played political leaders going back as far as Bob Menzies and says he found the majority who provided the richest vein were the bunch from the 80s when economies were globalised.

“Hawke, Reagan and Thatcher all feature,” he said. “Along with Fraser, Howard and the Queen and Graeme Richardson. “The show harks back to a time when leaders were all a bit larger than life and apparently braver than they are these days.” Gone are the days of wigs, make-up and disguise. Now Gillies portrays his famous political characters through expressions and dialogue alone. “When we made our TV shows and cabarets, I was younger than all my targets,” he said. “Now they’re all younger than me.” Making a younger face look older is generally more effective than the opposite And what does this master of political impersonations think of Donald Trump? “His toupee is a perfect emblem for his combination of fakery and unruly bombast,” Gillies said.

ENTERTAINMENT SMORGASBORD

THE Noosa Long Weekend Festival runs from July 15-26 and presents a smorgasbord of world-class entertainment, from cabaret, theatre, literary and food events as well as an opening Hastings St party carnivale. Happy to be a certain age Ita Buttrose a lifelong health advocate

SEVENTY-four-year-old Ita Buttose said she was of a privileged age. “If you are lucky, you get to be old,” she said. “My brother was dead at 62, he would have loved to get old.” In 1988, this doyenne of media, received an Order of Australia for service in the health care areas particularly HIV/AIDS education 2013 she was named Australia Senior of the Year for work in dementia. The award also gave her a platform to talk about age discrimination Today her ambition is to

make Australia an “Alzheimer friendly” country, bust ageing myths and see that mature-age people are treated fairly in the workplace. But she believes change must come from the top. “It’s all about leadership, we need enlightened leaders, management, trailblazers to show the way,” she said. “Look at Bob Hawke, John Howard – we need more people like them to speak up.” The television personality and lzheimer

Ambassador said she saw examples of ageism every day, but remembers clearly the first examples. “When I had ITA magazine, we would talk to potential advertisers and say our magazine was geared to women over 40 and 50-years- old , she said. “At the mention of that age, their eyes would glaze over. “It wasn’t until the Baby Boomers reached 50, that people realised this age group was fit, and contributing. She said there was definitely age

discrimination in the workplace and advised employers to take off their blinkers. “If there’s a shortfall in an industry, why not take on older people. “It’s a myth that older people take more sick leave or have less commitment. Older people can learn and adapt as well as anyone.” Ita believes that the key to good health is through preventative measures. And she warned of the danger of falls: “Look at Molly Meldrum and just recently Kerri-Anne’s husband John Kennerley.” She said Councils needed to ensure adequate street lighting and solid paving. Again exercise is an important preventative, particularly exercises that enhance your balance. In her role as an advocate for alzheimer care, she notes that brain health is as important as body health. For years now, she has travelled the country speaking to groups about this devastating disease and calling for better

help with enrolments and anything else a busy volunteer can do. The concept of University of Third Age (U3A) is to provide and share learning opportunities for mature, retired people in their “Third Age.” “That’s what attracted me back in 1986,” Mara told Seniors. “I couldn’t find any cultural activities to suit me on the Sunshine Coast and, when I saw a story in the paper about a new organisation being set up so people could enjoy learning, I went along. “We met in a café at Moffat Beach at Caloundra and Freda Cooper, who with her husband brought the idea from Melbourne, told us about it. It sounded like fun and we opened the doors in September to

about 70 people with classes in Esperanto and Indonesian.” Mara also lectured. A Mara Miller history graduate from the University of Western Australia, she gave talks on the countries around the Mediterranean Sea. From that meeting at Moffat Beach the first Coast U3A group was followed soon after by the formation of another in Brisbane. Both groups now have over 5000 members. Next month (June 2 and 3) U3A Sunshine Coast will celebrate its 30th anniversary when it hosts the annual U3A State Conference at the University of Sunshine Coast. Members from as

far away as Atherton in the north, Twin Towns in the south and Roma and Goondiwindi to the west will attend. The theme this year is Renew and Re-Connect celebrating the social connections U3A members enjoy as well as the opportunity to renew acquaintances from previous conferences. State Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson will open the conference and among the speakers are author, adventurer Dale Robertson, Major Jim Campbell DFC (Ret’d) and Rick Beasley will present a story on how the Buderim Men’s Shed has become one of the largest groups in Queensland. Pensioners go crazy for new hearing aid. AT LAST. The hearing aid that thousands have wanted is now available. Celebrate 100 is a totally invisible hearing aid when worn. It offers pensioners the opportunity to defy hearing loss by compensating for your individual hearing loss, in many situations. Nobody can see it because it fits snugly and comfortably in your ear canal and uses the ear’s natural acoustics for natural sound quality. Everything works automatically. There are no controls to worry about

so there’s no need to keep fiddling about and adjusting settings. You can start enjoying life again as you concentrate on hearing, rather than thinking about your hearing aid. Celebrate 100 continuously analyses incoming sounds and adapts to each individual situation so you always get the best hearing possible. Even in background noise. When speech and conversation sounds are detected, the sound is automatically increased at different frequencies so you hear and understand it clearly, not just loudly.

You get all the benefits you want in a digital hearing aid without the obvious sign that you are using one, as it’s completely invisible in most ears. For more information about Celebrate 100 and Government subsidies for pensioners:

Happiness on the plates JIM FAGAN

THE kitchen contractors are gone, a French chef is creating miracles among his pots and bain maries and happiness is on plates everywhere at Noosacare aged care facilities at Carramar (Tewantin) and Kabara (Cooroy). And it’s all because of celebrity foodie Maggie Beer who has a passion for better food for elders. The kitchen revolution started when group care manager Sandra Gilbert, heard Maggie tell a conference in Tasmania there was a need to “put soul in menu design and pleasure back into food service”. Sandra told Seniors that she immediately made her aim the same as Maggie Beer: “We wanted our residents to be

experiencing joy through their palette.” “I returned to Noosacare to discuss what I had heard with our CEO, Megan D’Elton. “I am a registered nurse and she is a CEO and between us we knew absolutely nothing about running a kitchen. “Our first step was to complete our food safety supervisor certificate and hire staff who had a passion for food. “Among them was French chef, Gilbert Roussett, who is very passionate about food. “Chefs and staff from some of the best restaurants in Noosa applied. They were attracted by the hours and no broken shifts. “Imagine finishing at 6.30pm instead of 1am every day.” It was wonderful to

know such a passionate group of people existed and were so on board with our ideas. “Three months after the takeover of our kitchen I sat in the residents meeting and no complaints, only compliments. “Instead of supply trucks coming from Brisbane, we now use local produce only. “With the money we’ve saved, we’ve been able to put on more kitchen staff.” And Maggie Beer? “She’s thrilled. We stay in contact.”

Sandra Gilbert will speak on Nutrition and the Aged at the Slow Food Noosa Breakfast on Thursday, May 26, at Peppers Resort, Little Hastings St, Noosa. Members $24, nonmembers $29.

Over 50’s well in touch Boomers are in fact three times less likely than Gen Y to use up all their sick leave each year. In addition, Baby Boomers typically take three days sick leave on average per year, which doubles for Gen Y’s at an average of six days,” general manager of marketing and ASIA spokesman Simon Hovell said. The fiscal impact of this leave differentiation is significant, with Gen Y costing up to $2.8 billion more than Baby Boomers a year to the Australian economy. The research also said a sizeable 77% of Baby Boomers adapted well to technological innovations, and 73% are actively seeking training opportunities. Looking at comparative

skill sets and values between Baby Boomers and Gen Y, the former proves stronger in almost all surveyed talents, while the latter felt more technically savvy by a moderate margin (10% compared to 27%, respectively). “The findings point to what many organisations, academics and economists have known all along – Baby Boomers are a real asset to the workplace,” said Mr Hovell. Where they would be disadvantaged is that they no longer have that asset earning interest in the bank. (The above applies to gifts of cash. Gifting a non-income earning asset, such as a car, could have an adverse effect on pension as the excess value of the gift is treated as a cash asset and deemed to earn income, which could reduce pension as it had not previously been included in the assessment.) RE: Anthony Jones of AMP (Brisbane Seniors, April 2016) indicated that giving away up to a certain sum does not impact on pension. The subject of gifting can be hard to explain, however, the reverse of Mr Jones's advice is true - giving away up to the specified limit can increase one's pension due to the reduction in assets and any income derived from those assets. Exceeding the gifting limits does not impact on pension as the excess gifts are not deducted from the asset figure used to assess the pension. Delving further into these challenges, close to half of Baby Boomers said it took longer than six months to find a new job when making a new career move or returning to work. A startling one in six said it took them five years or more to find a job. In addition, almost 60% of Baby Boomers who are considering early retirement said this decision would be influenced by not enjoying work and feeling that it was not worth trying to reskill. “Interestingly, amid organisations’ anxieties on the cost implications for healthcare with an aging workforce, Baby

Understanding of rules is imperative consider the impact to their overall bottom line. As each person’s situation is likely to be different, it is difficult to provide specific strategies and outcomes, however the statements you have made are certainly valid.

Our general approach is to ensure that people who want to gift funds for personal purposes (e.g. help with a wedding, mortgage etc.) understand the gifting rules. We also want to ensure

people understand that simply trying to give away funds to enhance their pension benefit may not provide the best overall financial outcome for them. Anthony Jones

As always be up-to-date and educated on financial decisions RE: Peter Bolitho finance article. Mr Bolitho suggested seniors an option to raise funds, was by a loan against your home. I would suggest great care be taken prior to completing this type of

loan, for the following reasons: I was executor of the wills of two good friends a few years ago, who had an equity loan from one of the big banks. They had negotiated a loan of $70,000 secured

by the home they owned, payable on sale of the property or paid by their estate. Sadly they both passed away over a period of 10 days. I then discovered that six years later the debt

had doubled, the interest was 171/2 per cent, which despite the bank being made aware of their deaths, continued to charge the interest until their estate was finalised. G. Prince

CONGRATULATIONS for another excellent April edition. Of particular interest to me as a former warder/prison officer, was the Steve Rhodes article Look Back at Boggo Road Jail. At part of the time Larry was a resident at Boggo Road, I was one of his keepers. He was what I termed a “Good Crim”. This translates in to being a man, who accepts his punishment, as a consequence of being caught and prosecuted, for something outside lawful boundaries. One aspect of the article that has particular relevance today, is Larry’s emphasis on the younger criminals being influenced in unsegregated confinement. In Larry’s day, even at Boggo Road, the boys were segregated from the senior criminal class. This

was accepted in subsequent years by both sides of the political divide here in Queensland, and a prison for youthful vulnerable offender class, was built and operated at Woodford. However come the 90s, the segregation was abandoned. In the 20 years that followed there were more murders and serious assaults of young criminals, than had been recorded, since the St Helena era. It is the Larrys of today, who have more appreciation and common sense, when it comes to the contamination of today’s generation, than any of the top political administrators. Congratulations Larry Campbell. Tom King Former warder, prison officer & superintendent, Qld.

Don’t wait to volunteer

IF YOU are thinking of becoming a volunteer, JUST DO IT. That’s the message from Cooroy’s Sue Stanley who, quietly and with great resolve, has opened a new world for our disabled sportsmen, giving them opportunities to compete at world and Paralympic level. Sue’s achievements were recognised in February when she was one of the four winners at the inaugural Sunshine Coast Inspiring Women Awards, taking out the Community Volunteer Award. And on May 11 she will share her thoughts on volunteering when she is one of the guest speakers at the Sunshine Coast Council’s Volunteer Expo at Lake Kawana Community Centre. Sue first became involved in disabled sport in 1992 through her son, Clinton, who has Down syndrome and is well known in Australian swimming through his world-record breaking achievements. He retired in 2012 as the 800m and 1500m world champion and was a 2013 finalist in the Australian of the Year Awards. “I remember being at my first Special Olympics national championships in Perth in 1994 wondering why Queensland didn’t have a tennis team. Especially when we had tennis champions living on the coast like Yvonne Cawley and Pat Rafter. “I came back home and started a Special Olympics tennis program at Nambour and it was a proud moment for me to take the first tennis team to represent Queensland

to Sydney in 1996. “It was an amazing and rewarding experience to see athletes achieve in tennis, especially when months before they couldn’t hit a ball over the net let alone serve into the court.” In 2004 she took five swimmers from Queensland to represent Australia at the 2nd World Down Syndrome Swimming Championships in South Africa. “The swimmers had met the qualifying times and I had previously taken them away with me for Special Olympics. “The success from the championships, in spite of the small size of the team was amazing - 29 medals, including seven world championships and three World Records. Sue decided she wanted to share the experience with other

swimmers with Down syndrome and in January 2005 she helped form The Down Syndrome Down Under Swimming Organisation. Since then she has taken Australian teams to championships in countries like South Africa, Taiwan, Ireland, Portugal and Mexico and in July will take a team to Florence, Italy. Asked if she had formed any opinion about being a volunteer in disabled sport, she said, “I think you can never underestimate what an athlete can achieve. There is nothing they can’t do, they always surprise you. “Being able to help someone achieve at their chosen sport and reach their dream, especially someone with a disability, is the most rewarding thing you can possibly do.”

AS SUNSHINE Coast pole vaulter Alana Boyd soars for Australia at the Olympic Games in Rio in August, she will be carrying on the proud tradition of her mum and dad, former Olympians, Denise and Ray Boyd. The Boyds, of Alexandra Headland, have the distinction of being the only two parents with a child from the same family to have made an Australian Olympic team in any sport. Ray (65 next month) is an 11-times Australian pole vault champion and made the 1972 Munich and the 1976 Montreal teams. Sprint specialist Denise (63) raced as Denise Robertson at Montreal Games and then as Denise Boyd at the Moscow Games four years later, reaching the finals of the 200 metres both times. She has won eight Commonwealth medals, including two gold.

to Rio for family as she prepares to take on world’s best There was an empty seat beside her and last on was Ray. “Pole vaulters are always last,” Denise told Seniors at her home in Alexander Headland. “It’s their poles. They’re five metres long and they have to be fitted in.” “We found we had like interests and we were in the Australian teams going overseas at that time. He was from Melbourne and I was a Brisbane girl. I moved to Melbourne in 1976 and we got married two years later. We then came to the Sunshine Coast in 1988 when Alana was four, Jacinta two and our baby, Matt.” Thirty-two-year-old Alana, who now lives in Brisbane, has also represented Australia at the last two Games in Beijing and London. We asked Denise if she had ever thought she would have a daughter gifted enough to compete at

three Olympics. “No, I didn’t even think about it. The kids went to Mooloolaba Primary School and they involved themselves in lots of events. They had a huge percentage of sports athletics’ records and I think they still hold them even now. “They joined Little Athletics and had a lot of fun there but Alana was 18 before she started pole vaulting which she took to like a duck to water. She wanted to be a hurdler but wasn’t quick enough. She was a good technician and won a national hurdles title but she didn’t have enough ground speed. “Ray has taught her to pole vault from the start, although she did go to Perth in 2009 where she stayed for three years being coached by Steve Hooker’s coach Alex Parnov.” Both Denise and Ray

They were with her at Beijing and London and now it’s Rio. Says Denise: “First it was Ray and now it’s Alana. Laguna Estate - a lifestyle choice ADVERTISEMENT

Is ‘grandma’s ghetto’ your idea of a retirement village? If so, stop right there! There is nothing further from the truth. In the past, most residents entered these villages aged in their seventies as part of a move to downsize, decrease maintenance responsibilities, experience a greater sense of safety and security, or for health and lifestyle reasons. Today, younger retirees from age 55 are seeing the benefits of relocating to a retirement village, with the emphasis on lifestyle and making the move a liberating experience. To those who say that they are not ready for such a move, many of the residents at Laguna Estate say that they wish they had made the decision earlier. It has given them the freedom to travel, visit family or just pursue new hobbies without any of the worries they previously had with the upkeep and security issues of their previous home. Combining outstanding resort facilities with stylish homes in a fully landscaped environment, this village strikes the perfect balance between privacy and independence whilst encouraging a vibrant and rewarding community in which to live. There are spacious villas and serviced apartments from which

to choose, all in a quiet, peaceful location yet so close to all the vibrant action of Noosa. The range of facilities is cleverly geared towards anyone over the age of 55, whether you are physically active or prefer a quieter lifestyle - and the grandchildren are welcome here. so what will sell you on your decision to make Laguna Estate your home? It is a combination of many things – particularly the smart community facilities and the activities which cater for all lifestyles, but also the quality finish of both the new and the refurbished villas, the resortstyle feel, the professional and hugely cheerful staff and the low monthly fees. At some time in the future you may need living assistance but this too is catered for at Laguna Estate with assisted care apartments available. Three meals a day, cleaning, weekly towel & linen changes and 24 hour on-call emergency staff are all part of the service. Laguna Estate is a class act – phone 1800 012 049 for lots more information and an appointment to view this special retirement estate at 21 Lake Weyba Drive, Noosaville. I WAS lamenting to a mate recently about flying Economy when I travel. We were having a lively chat about our travel dreams, as you do when you reach a certain age, have finished raising a family and are more free to travel. “I love to get away a couple of times a year,” I said to my mate. “I always travel Economy, keeps costs down.” “Ah, yes,” said the mate, but if you travel Economy, your kids certainly won’t. They’ll be in Business Class, spending the inheritance you left them because you sat down the back of the plane.” That got me riled. I’d never thought of it that way. Like most seniors, I want to leave my offspring a decent amount when I go, but hey, yes, why should they get the benefits of my hard work?

So, it’s up the front for me from now on. Sorry, kids, your inheritance just took a dip. I am sure most airlines’ Business Class sections are gorgeous but let’s focus on Cathay. You change all your preconceptions about inedible airline food once you’ve feasted in Business Class. Everything is more than edible. It’s wickedly good, and there is so much of it. Time now for the true pleasure of Business Class, that coveted thing that outweighs all the joy of the food, the wine, the movies, the warm nuts, the pamper bag, even the shoe locker ... the flat bed. In one smooth movement you are laid back, feet up on the ottoman, ready to relax until you touch down in Paris, but another press of the button and further down you smoothly glide until you are flat back, on a bed long enough for even the tallest of people. ■ More information on Cathay Pacific, its Business, Premium, Economy class section: www.cathaypacific.com.au

What is a senior move manager? By Leah Steinberg and Clarissa Brandt

THE rise of the “sandwich generation” (people typically in their thirties or forties, working full time, responsible both for bringing up their own children and for the care of their ageing parents) is FROM PAGE 15

Flowers were pivotal at the recent Nambour Garden

organisation, project management and physical activity related to such a big pack and move is overwhelming for the entire family. Calling on a senior move manager who has the multi-faceted skills and time to empathetically arrange a move is

Keep heart and blood vessels in great shape GOOD MEDICINE Dr MICHAEL GILLMAN HEART disease is far too common in Queensland. So what can we do to try and prevent early onset of heart and blood vessel damage? Unfortunately you usually do not know you have risk factors for heart disease because often there are no symptoms to warn you. So here is my checklist for reducing the risk: If you smoke, then quit. There are now numerous programs available through your local GP, pharmacy and medications to help quit, so the excuses for continuing to smoke are very few.Get your blood pressure checked. High blood pressure does not usually cause any symptoms and so the only way to know if yours is elevated is to get it measured. Get your blood sugar level tested. Impaired glucose tolerance is a precursor for diabetes and again does not have any obvious symptoms. A

THE great Yin Yoga pioneer, Paul Grilley, talks about the trajectory of ageing. He says that all humans follow the same trajectory of ageing, but, some faster than others. Hence the only way to die young is to slow the

ageing process down. But how? In the words of Ashley Montagu: “The idea is to die young as late as possible.” Grilley points out the ageing trajectory begins with birth. From the day we are born we become more yin-like. Yin represents stability whereas Yang represents mobility. The first stages of ageing are about gaining strength, not flexibility. Focus on the muscles. Get stronger. At some point, perhaps in

But the trajectory continues, we keep getting more yin-like. If only we could hit the pause button and stay there, but we can’t.

Change gears to get back on track Eva Bennett Retiring and Inspiring

SOME of you work, some of you are retired, some of you are transitioning into retirement. So, how busy is your life? If you are busy…busy…busy too much of the time on activities that drain your energy, you’re not really enjoying life. Now could be a good time, to sit down and create three lists to help you maintain a more balanced lifestyle and not fall into the trap of

overloading yourself with commitments. If you have been retired for a few years and find life has become bland, creating the three lists can help to spice up your life. List 1 – Write down the tasks/activities that are essential in your life. List 2 – Write down the tasks/activities that you feel obligated to do, but in the big picture, these are the things that can drain your energy. It is not selfish to say “No” sometimes. Otherwise people take you for

Conscious Life Events

granted and your own health can suffer. List 3 – Write down the things you would love to have more time to do that are not work related. People who have developed a work–life balance, getting involved in activities and meeting new people, transition into retirement more easily. It’s a good idea to review your list every so often to keep on track. Get back in the driver’s seat, change gears and enjoy the journey!

His attitude is worth copying Ann Rickard

IMMIGRATION Minister Peter Dutton’s mean-spirited comments recently that Kevin Rudd should retire and just take up caravanning must have sent shudders through many seniors. While caravanning is marvellous, to suggest that it is all older people should be doing is offensive to all seniors. Kevin Rudd, Australian Prime Minister from 2007 to 2010 and again in 2013, is now based in New York and is President of Asia Society Policy Institute. He also has his eye on the top job at the United Nations, replacing Ban Ki-Moon. I don’t think caravanning is on his agenda. Rudd is one senior who just keeps on keeping on. Love him or hate him, you have to admire his capacity to push on when, at age almost 60, and with no financial concerns he could so easily sit back and relax. No matter the number of set backs, turmoil, scandals and even just plain hurdles he has had to deal with in the past, he

has never taken the easy road and given up. Despite a busy schedule that takes him all over the globe, Kevin Rudd still takes as much time as he can to visit the place of his birth and childhood, Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. He has long had a beach house on the Sunshine Coast and whenever he can, he manages to squeeze in a mini escape with his wife Therese, children and now grandchildren. Continued study and constant learning along with on-going work are vital to his wellbeing. “My attitude to life and work is that no matter whatever I am doing, one day they will take me out in a box, from some desk, somewhere,” he said in a telephone interview with Senior’s Newspapers while he was en route from Washington DC to Ottawa. “In some cultures people are working in their 70s, 80s and even 90s not because they have to, but because it is part of their life. “That is somewhat different to Australia. “My aspiration is to

Caring for pets Deb Morrison www.petcloud.com.au

The best thing about retirement is having all the free time and doing fun things. As many people say life begins at retirement, when you can invest time in hobbies that you couldn’t do before. One of the latest hobbies that is becoming extremely popular amongst retirees across Australia is pet sitting (when pets are cared for in local homes for travelling pet owners). 5 reasons why pet sitting is the perfect pastime if you can’t commit to owning a pet full time: 1- Extra income – By becoming a pet sitter, you can earn up to $1000 a month depending on the services you provide to travelling pet owners in the comfort of your own home. 2- Companionship – A pet can be a great companion for those whose kids have moved

away or have lost their spouse. They can be the perfect cure to loneliness, and also entertain the grandkids! 3 – Stress Buster – Pets can help relieve stress and also be of great help for people suffering from dementia or Alzheimers. Research has also proved that interaction with pets can stimulate the appetite among people who might not eat regularly. 4- Fitness buddy – Exercise is an integral part of our lives, playing with a pet makes seniors more active 5- Bodyguard – Dogs are often considered the best for guarding a house, even a small dog can deter a robber with barking. Best of all you’re the boss, and can choose the hours or days you’re available, and pick the pets you want to look after. Deb Morrison is the CEO of online pet sitting website, www.petcloud.com.au

Mature voice for change as new party registers Advertising feature

MATURE-age Australians (from 18 to the 80s +) now have a new champion in their corner for the coming national election battles, in July or later. The Mature Australia Party, registered recently by the Australian Electoral Commission, has its sights on Senate and House of Representatives seats in at least five of the six Australian States. National president Terry Snell (Qld) said the Party was processing endorsement applications from 15 prospective candidates, and expected more to join the bid in coming days and weeks. “We have definite starters in Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland – and we’re confident of securing spots in each State. “For the first time, maturees will have their own voice in this election campaign, and the Parliament, to ensure that they’re given the recognition and support they deserve. They won’t be ignored any more; we’ll make sure of that”.

Queensland Senate candidate Jim Savage(Sunshine Coast) said the Party’s approach of basing its policies on the input, views, and concerns presented by “the people” themselves – not vested interests and power brokers, like other parties – had raised tremendous interest Australia-wide. “The people are making their views clear, in no uncertain terms, and these are the policies and issues we’ll be taking to the people, at the election. “Mature-age people with a range of major concerns, including pensioners, self-funded retirees, people in small businesses, hard-pressed young and middle-age family groups, the elderly, the disadvantaged, and the disabled... they’ve all been discriminated against, ignored, or taken for granted by Governments for far too long. “These are the specific interest groups in our communities that the Mature Australia Party will be giving a voice to.”

Simplify future of retirement living Advertising feature

SUNSHINE Coast is home to over 80 retirement villages, each one different from the next offering different services, costs and contracts. It is estimated that in Queensland alone there are more than 700 retirement villages, over-50s home parks and seniors complexes. The challenge for retirees is knowing which one is right choice for them. There is so much complexity with the different types of schemes, payment structures and amenities it is virtually impossible to compare apples with apples. Many villages sell the “dream” but the underlying facts around the costs and contracts are not always fully understood before a person makes a decision to purchase. A new company called Shine Retirement has emerged to assist retirees through the maze of retirement living and offer choice and advice on which village

AUSTRALIANS participating in Rotary’s life-saving bowel cancer awareness initiative will benefit from the inclusion of faecal immunochemical tests (FIT) in all Rotary-branded bowel screening kits in 2016. The tests are available in participating Australian pharmacies or online at bowelscan queensland.org.au. from May 1. The program will see over 120,000 faecal immunochemical tests (FIT) used as part of the Rotary Bowelscan programs in 2016 across Australia. The FIT is one of the most effective and easiest ways to reduce the risk of bowel cancer. Gastroenterologist Dr Howard Hope said the national inclusion of the faecal immunochemical tests was an important next step for the already successful program. "Bowel cancer is the second most common newly diagnosed cancer in Australia, but it is treatable if diagnosed

WELCOME back after reading my March column. I am hoping to simplify the process for seniors and their loved ones, to gain access to the care they require to stay living in their own homes, over moving into an “institutionalised setting”. It is therefore imperative that we start with a check-list on “How to know when your or your loved one needs help”. Inadequate meals and nutrition: Does there appear to be a loss of interest in preparing well-balanced, nutritional meals? Are there unusual amounts of spoiled food in the refrigerator? Have food dates expired on staple foods such as dairy

and meat? Are there many packaged foods and cans of the same thing? Unopened or piled up bills: Is mail piled up unopened? Are there more than usual magazine subscriptions coming to the house? Do some of the bills come from unrecognisable sources? Recurring memory loss: Are you or your loved one missing doctor’s appointments or forgetting to make them? Are you/they making mistakes with medication? Are foods left cooking on the stove? Have pots been burned? Frequent falls: Are medicines causing dizziness or loss of balance? Are you/they refusing to use a prescribed cane or walker? Lack of interest or

feeling “sort of down”: Have there been many peer losses recently? Has the sadness gone on for a long time? What kind of social activities do they engage in outside the home? Unsafe driving: Have you noticed a change in driving capabilities? Have you noticed changes in your/their agility, reflexes and eyesight? Have there been recent accidents? A marked change in behaviour patterns: Is the home as neat and spotless as it used to be? Are you/they more irritable or otherwise moody, teary or sad? River cruising luxury

Wall-to-wall comfort as a kaleidoscope of Europe’s charms glides past your panoramic window Ann Rickard

IF EVER there was a holiday designed specifically for us mature folks, it would have to be river cruising. There are many reasons for this, more about them in a minute, but the top one would surely be: no children on board. We love children, most of us seniors are doting grandparents, but we don’t love the little tykes when they are running amok around the decks and lounges on a ship. River cruising is not designed for children, there are no facilities for them, they’d be bored. River cruising suits those of us who enjoy

the ease of being moved smoothly from one place to another, those who love to unpack just the once, who adore being pampered and wined and dined to the brim. Those who love a no-bingo-orextravagant-theatre policy, those who are more the gather-around-the-piano type. Avalon Waterways’ newest river ship, Imagery II, has just been launched on the Rhine, formally christened by “godmother”, New Zealand personality, Judy Bailey. It now awaits your pleasure. You are going to love this spanking new ship with its Suite Ship policy: two entire decks of roomy suites with marble

EnGLAnD – ScOTLAnD - WALES Antique & Vintage Cars | Planes | Trains Waterways & Industrial Heritage

bathrooms complete with L’Occitane products, and more space than any other ships cruising Europe’s great rivers. What you are going to love beyond all the many loveable details on board Imagery II, is the wall-to-wall windows in your suite, a whole wall that slides back to transform your suite into one large alfresco balcony and – this is luxury without measure – the bed faces the window. Think about that. You wake up each morning in a comfortable wide bed beneath a floaty white doona to lazily watch a kaleidoscope of Europe’s charms glide past your panoramic window.

If you (or better still, your mate) has padded quietly to the elegant lounge at the aft of the ship, where a gleaming coffee machine will dispense any coffee style of your choice, and he brings it back along with a big home-baked cookie to enjoy in bed, well, you are going to be in holiday heaven aren’t you? And your exciting day hasn’t even started yet. The unprecedented growth in river cruising has astonished everyone in the travel industry, even Avalon Waterways’ management who are frantically building more ships to keep up with demand. Avalon Waterways does not let its ships age.

SMALL GROUP

ESCOR ESCORTED ED E SCORTE D

When they are only just past juvenile stage, they are sold or sent off to ship graveyard. Hence, all Avalon’s long sleek river ships are modern and fresh. None more so than Imagery II. The decor is contemporary and restful with tasteful and luxurious object d’art and contemporary art works at every turn. The lounges and dining room are fitted with up-to-the-minute furniture with exquisite fabrics. On the expansive top open-air deck, the sun lounges beckon, and a small spa sits beside a giant deck chess set. The chef even grows his own herbs in pots up on the deck.

You will never be short of something exciting to do on Imagery II as her itinerary stops at some of Europe’s most beautiful cities, towns and villages. And the ship docks right in the heart of things. You have only to walk off to have Avalon’s private buses with local guides waiting a few steps away to whisk you into the heart of Europe’s excitement, history and culture. Comfort is what most of us prioritise for our travels as we age. Followed by ease of getting from A to B. Imagery II provides the lot. The writer was a guest on board Imagery II.

Beware of dinosaurs Come on a journey through Winton’s famous museum Phil Hawkes

DINOSAURS have been around in Queensland for a long time. Of course I speak of fossils, not real life (unless speaking of some of my contemporaries) and the area around Winton has become quite famous, worldwide, for its splendid Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum of Natural History. Now there’s a new kid on the block in the form of Cooper, identified as a Titanosaur discovered in 2004 on a property near Eromanga further south. This is the largest dinosaur fossil find so far in Australia, with a humerus 1.5 metres in length and weighing over 100kg, a new species in the world. Since then, George, Zac and Sid have joined Eromanga’s growing dino family. Other large creatures have also been found near Eulo and identified as Megasaurs. Understandably, palaeontologists are very

excited by these new discoveries and the Outback Gondwana Foundation together with the Queensland Museum has just opened a brand new Natural History Museum in Eromanga (ENHM) to display these amazing fossils and run educational programs for tourists, school groups and scientists. It’s a well-curated exhibition managed by Robyn Mackenzie, owner of the property where Cooper was found by her 14-year-old son Sandy. He thought it looked “different” to the usual cattle bones and from there the story led to the Queensland Museum experts, culminating in over 80 digs and the new Eromanga facility. Robyn herself has become quite an expert and a devotee of palaeontology. Eromanga is a very small town more known for its extensive opal mining and more lately, oil drilling producing around 1.5 million barrels a year.

DISCOVERY: Robyn Mackenzie explains the dinosaur and megafauna bones and cleaning process to the children at the TQ film shoot at the Eromanga Natural History Museum field station on June 28, 2013. PHOTO: ROBYN MACKENZIE

But the fossil finds, and the older Living History Museum with its superb memorabilia have put the town firmly on the tourism map. A visit to Eromanga

would not be complete without lunch or dinner at the Royal Hotel where you’re likely to meet such characters as Giggles, an opal miner for many years and a teller of tall tales.

You may even persuade him to take you out to his tenement to do a bit of fossicking. GETTING THERE Brisbane to Quilpie 954km by road, or by Rex

Connect with country Learning from Barcaldine’s Tree of Knowledge Erle Levey

THERE is one thing Outback Queensland offers apart from its well-known bush hospitality, the country air and big skies of a night … its history. Barcaldine Shire mayor Rob Chandler sums it up well when he says: “Australia grew from inside out when it opened up the outback.” There are few better places to understand a chapter in Australia’s history than at the Tree of Knowledge in this town. In 1891 the ghost gum directly in front of the railway station witnessed a divisive confrontation that threatened to plunge the nation into civil war as striking shearers stopped non-union labourers arriving by train to fill their jobs. The strike was a bitter campaign fuelled by lowering of shearers’ conditions by sheep station owners. Now, 125 years later, a dramatic reconstruction of the seven-metre high tree

Tourism is an integral part of the Barcaldine Shire’s economy. PHOTO: ERLE LEVEY

stands outside the station where visitors are welcomed, with tourism being an integral part of the Barcaldine Shire’s economy. Celebrations for the anniversary will be highlighted by a town party and street parade on May 1 this year. Yet in 1891 the wool industry was the unrivalled economic pillar of the colony of Queensland. The 200-year-old ghost gum saw protesting sheep shearers mark the foundation of the Australian Labor Party. Striking shearers

marched under the Eureka flag to put forward their protests against poor working conditions and low wages. In 1991, the tree was found to be suffering from dieback but it in an act of vandalism it was poisoned with glyphosate in 2006. Two years later the tree was successfully cloned by workers at the former Queensland Department of Primary Industries. All visitors will go into the draw to win a Mastercard Multi Currency Cash Passport with $1000 cash loaded on to it; plus those that make a booking will go into a draw for Mekong River Cruise with APT. Most major cruise lines will be present on the day including, but not limited to, Scenic, Princess Cruises, P&O, Holland America, Royal Caribbean, APT, Azamara, Celebrity, Avalon Waterways and more. There will also be a host

of niche cruise suppliers offering itineraries to South America, Antarctica, Galapagos, Asia River cruising and even domestic expedition cruising. Event organiser and Ucango Travel & Cruise managing director Dave Hulsman said the success of the last three events just showed how popular cruising had become. “It has been interesting to watch the industry evolve over the past five years,” Mr Hulsman said. “Not only do we have a large market of cruisers heading overseas for cruise options but each year we see more and more vessels coming out to our waters which is opening the market up to more and more demographics. “Cruising among Australians has grown exponentially over the past decade and passenger numbers in Australia alone are expected to double in the next four years.

FINANCE

Plan to fund your own retirement

6056089aa

WORKING Australians have almost one-tenth of their salary added to their super each year through employer contributions. Yet many people aren’t embracing the benefits of super to grow a retirement nest egg. A recent study by MLC found two out of five Australians don’t think they will be able to fund their own retirement, and expect to rely on government support in their senior years. One in five people are pinning their hopes on a big inheritance to ensure their financial security. At present, 53% of Australia’s retirees rely on the government as a source of income, and given our ageing population it’s hard to see how this level of support

in super, salary sacrifice can fast track your nest egg. If you’re self-employed, making contributions to super can provide a valuable tax deduction. You can claim a tax break for up to $30,000 of contributions for the current financial year, or $35,000 if you were aged 49 or over on 30 June 2015. If your spouse is a low income earner (less than $13,800 annually) or not working, you may be able to claim a $540 tax offset when you make a contribution of up to $3,000 to his or her super fund. Check out the co-contribution calculator on the government’s MoneySmart website to know what sort of co-contribution you could be entitled to. A look at top 20 stocks performance ‘So far in 2016 the market is close to flat’ ONE of the big standouts of the lethargic performance of the Australian sharemarket in recent times has been the underperformance of the large cap stocks. Banks have been down, the supermarket wars have taken their toll on our major retailers, and until very recently, resource companies were being decimated due to the collapse in commodity prices. The top 20 stocks account for almost 50% by market capitalisation of the ASX, so when they are going backwards, it is hard for the overall market to go up. And they have been struggling. In the year to the end of March, the top 20 stocks returned (including dividends) -16.34%. This compares to the overall market’s return of -9.59%. So far in 2016, the overall market is close to flat at -0.19% (including dividends), while the top 20 still lags at -3.42%. When you view returns over a longer time frame, as you may probably guess, they are more closely aligned. Over the 5 years to end March, they are about the same, while over 10 years, the top 20 has outperformed with a return of 5.29% pa compared to the

Feeling social? Join the conversation!

S&P/ASX 200 return of 4.43% pa. While the US markets are now not that far off the highs they touched last year, the Aussie market at 5216 has a long way to go to challenge the 6,000 level that it got so very close to in March 2015. Improved performance in the Australian Market top 20 would require some fundamental elements: The commodity prices need to bottom - the market has to believe that the worst is behind and that there aren’t

...there is potential for improvement if governing influences stabilise producers or companies servicing the mining industry in danger of collapse. With the oil price stabilizing around US$40 a barrel and iron ore surging through US$60 a tonne, BHP and Rio had strong rallies in early April. In regard to the Banks, the market needs to gain confidence that bad debts are under control and that there isn’t a risk of a major deterioration.

The Aussie dollar would need to stay down to help the economy keep growing, otherwise some of our large cap companies will find delivering top line growth pretty difficult. So currently the Australian market is flat based on market influences on key players in the top 20, but there is potential for improvement if governing influences stabilise.

can be sustained. This is why we are continually being urged to build a pot of retirement savings ourselves, and superannuation provides an ideal way. Super is lightly taxed when we’re in the work force, and you can withdraw your super tax-free from age 60. That makes super far more tax-friendly than investments held outside super - and much more of a sure thing than an inheritance. As we head towards the end of the financial year, it’s worth looking at ways to grow your nest egg. In some cases, it could mean more money in your hand today. If you’re a PAYG worker, consider speaking with the boss about adding to your super through salary sacrifice. This is where you choose to have part of your before-tax salary paid into super rather than receiving it as cash in hand. If you don’t have much

Rossini masterpiece Prepare yourself for a grand experience with Noosa Chorale become justly famous. “This romantic Rossini is neither petite (small) nor solennelle (solemn) as in the classical style of Haydn, Mozart and Schubert. “Instead, it has a stimulating musical flavour, reminiscent of opera arias or ensemble numbers, but these are carefully constructed and moulded by Rossini to perfectly suit the religious text.” He said the concert would feature the 70-strong Chorale and seven outstanding vocal and instrumental soloists. “We have tenor David Kidd who is a familiar face and voice for many as a result of his Ten Tenors and Opera Queensland performances. “Soprano Panayiota Kalatzis is a winner of the prestigious Australian International Awards and the Ruskin Opera Scholarship. “She is a graduate of the of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music

“Epic and amazing.” That’s how popular Sunshine Coast conductor, Adrian King describes Gioachino Rossini’s famous Mass Petite Messe Selonnelle which Noosa Chorale is performing on May 28 at The J Noosa. Adrian has fond memories of singing Rossini’s masterpiece which the Italian composer wrote in 1863 and since then has been hailed by audiences all over the world. As a young student in the U.K. he sang in the tenor line in the chorus at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and later conducted it with the Grimsby Philharmonic Society. “I can remember being astonished at the way the music ranged from a hushed lyrical intensity to an animated flamboyance with lots of memorable tunes and rhythmic vitality for which Rossini has

completing her studies at the Conservatorium. She is a specialist in sacred music.” Adrian said the Mass was often performed with an orchestra but Rossini wrote it for two pianos and a harmonium and that was the orchestration he

had selected for this concert. “On two grand pianos we have Natasha Koch and Janet brewer and on harmonium, Huguette Brassine. They are well known to Sunshine Coast audiences for their inspired playing at

The Addams Family on stage at Coolum A hilarious night of madness IN THE kooky, upside-down world of the Addams Family, to be sad is to be happy, to feel pain is to feel joy, and death and suffering are the stuff of their dreams. Nonetheless, this quirky family still has to deal with the same challenges faced by any other family, and the spookiest nightmare faced by every family - the Addams kids are growing up. The Addams have lived by their unique values for hundreds of years and Gomez and Morticia would be only too happy to continue living that way. Their dark, macabre, beloved daughter Wednesday, however, is now eighteen and has fallen in love with Lucas Beineke, a smart boy from a normal, respectable family - the most un-Addams sounding person one could be! And

to make matters worse, she has invited the Beinekes to their home for dinner. In one fateful, hilarious night, secrets are disclosed, relationships are tested, and the Addams family must face up to the one horrible thing they’ve managed to avoid for generations: change. Coolum Theatre Players presents this new musical, at the Coolum Civic Centre, directed by the incomparable Linda Gefken. TO CELEBRATE 15 fabulous years, the Noosa Long Weekend festival has announced it will kick off this year’s festival with the biggest and best “street party” ever musicians, dancers, drummers, floats, fire eaters, feathers and glitz, culminating in a precision landing of five sky divers on Noosa main beach! Festival director Ian Mackellar said, “For 15 years, the Noosa community has supported us, so this is our way of ‘saying thanks’. Bring the kids and join in the fun as we turn Hastings St into ‘Rio’ for two fun filled hours.” Hot 91 Breakfast announcer, Sam Coward will MC proceedings and Festival director, Ian Mackellar along with our 2016 Festival Ambassador, Damien Anthony Rossi of the Seven Network’s, The Great South East and the Sunday Mail (aka Mr Hollywood), will then declare this year’s festival well and truly “open”! The challenge is to rearrange a crossword which has been broken into 25 sections. One letter has been given to get you started. Work out which 3x3 square fits in with that letter and write in the letters. You can also shade the black squares if you find it helpful. After completing the first 3x3 area, work out which square joins on to it, and continue until you have made a complete crossword.
