THIS is a story of survival and mutual love. It’s the story of Zac, a little Maltese terrier who came into the life of Patricia Adams 17 years ago when he was just three – scared, filthy and about to be put down. He was so tiny, staff at the council pound called him Zac because he reminded them of a sixpence (a tiny, pre-decimal currency, silver coin). Fast forward to today and it is clear Zac is worth his weight in gold to 75-year-old Patricia, of Peregian Springs. So what’s so special about survivor Zac? Well, he’s 20 years of age which makes him probably the oldest Maltese terrier (the oldest dog?) on the Coast. Maltese terriers have a life span of 12–15 years and with Zac still being around at 20, it’s quite an achievement. His age in human terms is nudging 100. He’s lost most of his teeth, is blind in his right eye and a bit arthritic but he loves a walk, especially in the cooler weather. He also has a special diet of

lies and they had rejected him. I was told I was his last chance. “He was filthy and a funny caramel colour. It took me a month of washing him every week to find out he was absolutely white. “He also had a completely mad look in his eyes. He
was terrified of my father and brother. It was obvious he had been terribly badly treated.” Patricia said it took her 18 months of love and spoiling and lots of medical attention to get his condition to be “near reasonable”. “He’s still a bit nervous around men but he’s a good watchdog, barking when someone comes to the door.” Zac’s vet, Dr Alice O’Hare, of Peregian Springs Vet Surgery, describes him as “a walking miracle, so tough and so stoic”. “His story is one of resilience and of the commitment Patricia has to him, with her attention to his diet and persistence to ensure he gets the care and medication he needs. “I think the Sunshine Coast and being surrounded by family has been the perfect remedy for him,” Dr O’Hare said. ■ Is there another much loved pet on the Sunshine Coast that competes with Zac’s age? We would like to hear about it. Please let us know online at www.seniorsnews.com.au

Mates chasing waves 60 years on By JIM FAGAN
IT’S a safe bet their close mateship will go by the (long) board when Glenn Martin (71) and Mick Reale (74) compete in the over-70s division at the Noosa Festival of Surfing, which starts this weekend (March 5-12). As youngsters and close mates in 1954, Glenn and Mick used to wait for the school bell at the end of the day at Sydney’s Dee Why Primary and then rush to the beach for a few waves. Life just couldn’t get any better. And then, as often happens, they went to different high schools and lost track
of each other until – fast forward 60 something years – they met four years ago at the funeral of a surfing mate in Noosa. Glenn takes up the story. “I asked Mick where he came from and he said, ‘Dee Why. I went to primary school there’. “I said, ‘So did I, but I can’t place you’.” Glenn then described how a friend had come up from Sydney for the funeral. “He was moaning about how his marriage had broken up and his wife had got all nasty and burnt all his photographs. “I said, ‘Don’t worry. I’ve got some old school photos
and I’ll send you some’. I showed them later to Mick and I couldn’t believe it when he looked at one and said, ‘That’s me sitting two seats away from you’.” Mick, who lives at Tewantin, came to Noosa seven years ago, and Glenn, of Peregian Springs, has been here 14 years. Nowadays, they surf every day of the week together, chasing waves from Cooloola to Double Island Point, Mick with his 9’2” Laguna Bay longboard and his mate with a 9’ 8”. “After surfing, we go and have a coffee and tell each other how good we are,” Glenn said.

Margaret stitches Stage costuming is a seven-day-a-week job By JIM FAGAN
TAPE measure around her neck, Margaret Courtney is wedged between racks of stage costumes and shelves of hatboxes and wigs on dummy heads, everything, in fact, that goes into creating the magic and the fantasy of Noosa Arts Theatre. “Tilt your head a little this way, Ebony,” she says as she adjusts Mary Poppins’ hat. Eighteen-year-old Ebony Hamacek, of Sunshine Beach, who has acted with the theatre since she was 11, obligingly moves her head. Ebony’s excited and happy. This is her first leading role and the first time she has seen her costume for next month’s production of the musical Julie Andrews made famous. Wardrobe mistress and performer Margaret, however, is a bit more contained. After all, she’s been transforming fabric into colourful creations for the stage for the last 53 years, the last

25 with Noosa Arts. She estimates she has been involved in providing 1670 costumes. Margaret (70) was 17 when she joined the Victorian Light Opera Company. “My girlfriend and I had minor leads as sopranos in La Belle Helene. We said we could do our own costumes and the next
She has been involved in providing 1670 costumes! thing we were making costumes for the whole chorus. “Although I had lessons at school, I hadn’t trained as a dressmaker. I remember saying to my girlfriend, ‘We’ve got more front than Myers’.” After some years in NSW, where she sang and made costumes with the Hurstville Light Opera Company, she came to Noosa in
1991 with husband George, a set designer and volunteer like Margaret, as is everyone at the theatre. The following year she auditioned for the lead role of Mrs Barnum in the musical Barnum. She got the nod – and the job of making her own costume. She took no time to declare her biggest challenge: “In 2008 we did Gigi. There were, I think, 35 in the cast and everyone had three costume changes. I did a count at the time and, including the gloves, ties and scarves, my team designed and made more than 300 items. “I had a fabulous role. I played the extremely wealthy aunt and she had the best costumes which, of course, I made myself. I had five costumes changes of sophisticated fabulous clothes, all satin and lace. “It was great fun.” Margaret says costuming for a big show is a sevenday-a-week job but she loves it.

Until then, the only activities they seemed to have done were the Aquatic Centre for swimming, tenpin bowling and visit the local shopping centres. “We were a bit left of field. THE Sunshine Beach Surf Club is considered one of Coast’s “young” clubs. Formed in 1981, the first beach patrol was held in October of that year. In 1983, the club was granted leasehold rights over land adjacent to the existing carpark for the purpose of commencing building of a clubhouse. The official opening of the clubhouse by then Premier Joh BjelkePetersen took place March 3, 1984. Recently a group of dedicated lifesavers sat around a table at Sunshine Beach Surf Club to talk about foundation of the club that still stands strong today. There’s nothing like a little reminiscing and if you would like to see the full video of the member’s stories visit the Seniors Newspaper website at www.seniorsnews.com.au.

Age no barrier to Andrea despite late start in surf By JIM FAGAN
AUSTRALIA’S only film festival programmed for film lovers aged 60 and up, Young at Heart, has revealed a stellar program that will roll out in April to Palace Cinemas across Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and for the first time in 2016, Brisbane. For its 11th incarnation, the Young at Heart program will include 10 new feature films, a selection of new Australian short films starring seniors, special
events, filmmaker Q&As, a digital print of the 1951 classic A Streetcar Named Desire and the Foxtel Movies Audience Award where filmgoers vote for Best Film. Festival director Mathieu Ravier says, “This year’s program takes a particular look at the modern family, celebrating the unconventional, complex and everchanging relationships that bind us together.” Celebrating the contribu-
tion of senior Australians to film culture will be the Relay Service Short Film Awards, a showcase of the best new Australian short films featuring seniors in lead roles, that will tour to over 80 regional towns. The Best Senior Actor award will be determined by a panel industry professionals. Program is available from www.youngatheart.net.au or filmgoers can receive a copy in the post by calling 02 9550 2266.

SURFING for Andrea Bohm is like dancing with the wave as your partner. “You’ve got the movement, the water, the environment. You don’t need anything else. That’s why I love surfing.” Andrea, 58, from Freshwater Surf Club in Sydney, is the oldest female competitor at the Noosa Festival of Surfing this month. She’s a late starter to surfing. “I was 40 when I picked up my first board. “I belonged to the generation when girls were discouraged from board riding. “When I was young, we used to go for our Christmas holidays to Torquay, but not many of our friends rode surfboards. The boys put us off. Real puberty blues stuff. “The boys would go to Bells Beach and we’d go south and body surf. “I wanted my two daughters to be able to surf, so my husband, Graham, a roofing contractor, and I, had boards specially made for them. “There wasn’t much doing for me when they were surfing, so I decided to have a go myself.” Andrea has a 9’ 2” Steve O’Donnell board and rides the waves usually at Freshwater Beach. “The thing about the water is that it builds relationships. Referendum on length of term of State Parliament THE Electoral Commission of Queensland will conduct a State Referendum on Saturday, March 19, in conjunction with the Local Government Quadrennial Elections. The referendum seeks approval from Queenslanders to change the term of Qld State Parliament. Currently, Qld’s State Parliament sits for a term no longer than three years. The referendum calls for electors to either vote ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ to approve the Constitution (Fixed Term Parliament) Amendment Bill 2015 which seeks to change parliament’s term to a fixed four years. The Referendums Act 1997 provides that the majority of the members of Parliament who voted for and against the Bill have the opportunity to provide a statement of arguments in support of their position to the Commission. Well, Peter Connell would like you to vote for going to the Sunshine Coast Council’s Heritage Discovery Showcase at the School of Arts Hall, at Eumundi. PALMWOODS resident Elizabeth Druitt is the new music director of the Noosa District Concert Band and, already, she has some busy travel plans for her musicians this year. “We’re going on the road,” she told Seniors. “We have lots of gigs, including a concert in Gayndah and I want them to play at country shows like Maleny, Nambour, Cooroy, and Pomona. “We’ll also look at appearing, as we did last year, at the Noosa and Maleny Jazz Festivals.” An instrumental music teacher at high schools in the Beerwah and Kenilworth districts, Elizabeth has just taken over from Bruce Barnett, who had been conductor since 2011. Established in 1997 as a community band, it has various musical styles, including popular music, jazz and classical. It has 30 regular members,

Laguna Estate - a lifestyle choice ADVERTISEMENT
Is ‘grandma’s ghetto’ your idea of a retirement village? If so, stop right there! There is nothing further from the truth. In the past, most residents entered these villages aged in their seventies as part of a move to downsize, decrease maintenance responsibilities, experience a greater sense of safety and security, or for health and lifestyle reasons. Today, younger retirees from age 55 are seeing the benefits of relocating to a retirement village, with the emphasis on lifestyle and making the move a liberating experience. To those who say that they are not ready for such a move, many of the residents at Laguna Estate say that they wish they had made the decision earlier. It has given them the freedom to travel, visit family or just pursue new hobbies without any of the worries they previously had with the upkeep and security issues of their previous home. Combining outstanding resort facilities with stylish homes in a fully landscaped environment, this village strikes the perfect balance between privacy and independence whilst encouraging a vibrant and rewarding community in which to live. There are spacious villas and serviced apartments from which
to choose, all in a quiet, peaceful location yet so close to all the vibrant action of Noosa. The range of facilities is cleverly geared towards anyone over the age of 55, whether you are physically active or prefer a quieter lifestyle - and the grandchildren are welcome here. so what will sell you on your decision to make Laguna Estate your home? It is a combination of many things – particularly the smart community facilities and the activities which cater for all lifestyles, but also the quality finish of both the new and the refurbished villas, the resortstyle feel, the professional and hugely cheerful staff and the low monthly fees. At some time in the future you may need living assistance but this too is catered for at Laguna Estate with assisted care apartments available. Three meals a day, cleaning, weekly towel & linen changes and 24 hour on-call emergency staff are all part of the service. Laguna Estate is a class act – phone 1800 012 049 for lots more information and an appointment to view this special retirement estate at 21 Lake Weyba Drive, Noosaville. An early start finds old questions
Fairfax LNP candidate Ted O’Brien talks to local seniors and discovers the issues By JIM FAGAN
TED O’Brien was delighted by the enthusiasm of more than 80 seniors who ttook him up on his offer to talk over issues facing the elderly in Australia. After the meeting, held at Buderim Garden Retiremnt Village, Mr O’Brien, a Buderim resident and LNP candidate for the Federal seat of Fairfax, said he was impressed the comments weren’t just related to seniors. “A lot of people would probably underestimate how well-informed and interested the elderly are about other generations. It’s not all about their own interests.” The date for the next national election hasn’t been announced but Mr O’Brien has already started campaigning. It’s not hard to understand why, last time he was pipped by just 53 votes by incumbent MP Clive Paltant. Mr O’Brien was supported by Nambour’s Senator James McGrath, who is
Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister and Assistant Minister for Immigration. “Once we find out what the problems are, we can make a contribution to solving them,” Mr O’Brien said. He offered 12 issues, ranging from safety and security, to pensions, aged care
❝
Those present decided the pressing issues were health, cost of living and the economy, bracketed with the national debt.
and disability support. The meeting was asked to select three and, after voting, the most pressing issues proved to be health, cost of living, and the economy bracketed with the national debt. Each was tackled separately and included:
■ Uncertainty about the services of the new hospital at Kawana and the role of Nambour Hospital ■ Out of pocket costs for visits to specialists ■ Pharmacies taking over the role of GPs ■ Government funding for palliative care providers ■ Lack of subsidies for natural medicine; ■ Rising cost of private health cover Following close behind were: ■ Price gouging at the petrol bowser ■ Increasingly high price of meat and groceries and who was profiting ■ Costs of electricity and posting a letter. But the surprise of the morning came with the inclusion of economy and national debt. Senator McGrath’s statement that Australia’s national debt would be $565 billion in two years and right now was costing Australians $30,000 a minute in foreign interest was clearly one of concern for seniors. Audience comments in-
cluded: “Why hasn’t this been in the papers? We’re not selling the message correctly.” “We’ve got to tell the bloke in the street that for every $9 you get in your pocket, we’re spending $10.” “We’re going to run out of money and end up like
Greece.” “We’ve got to pull in our belts and get back on track.” Other concerns included: ■ Foreign investment, particularly the purchase of agricultural land; ■ the need to ensure big corporates are paying their
fair share of tax; ■ Need to reduce bureaucracy, especially with health and education; ■ GST; also came under scrutiny. Senator McGrath reported the GST was “done, finished, dead.”

Taskforce looks at new housing options
Are you raising Grandchildren?
Independence is the focus
Do you need information?
THE Palaszczuk Government understands that seniors can be faced with barriers such as cost of living, equality and independence when it comes to housing options as they get older. Which is why we have appointed the Advisory Taskforce on Residential Transition for Ageing Queenslanders, to identify

The Palaszczuk Government is committed to working with the experts to ensure all options are explored, and that older Queenslanders can have access to the best and most appropriate housing options. that older Queenslanders can retain their independence. The taskforce will consider the needs of older people and will aim to improve choice, affordability, fairness and independence, while reducing complexity as they move into the next phase of their lives. The taskforce will consider and advise the State Government on options for the supply of housing, supports and other initiatives that will improve choices
MY POSITION is that, due to my own fault, at age 74, and my wife at 73, are still working to supplement the aged pension to pay the rent on our present rented home, which we enjoy. However, over the past few months, we have spent much time on the internet
trying to find any type of suitable housing for when we have to eventually give up working due to age, maybe in a short period of time. I was unable to find any retirement village or over-50s-type accommodation. None of the many places
we tried offered rentals of any sort. Out of our pension, we are prepared to pay for housing, should there be any on offer, in any area. We are currently paying $385/week, and with a small supplement from working, can manage. What happens to folk like
us who don’t have the means to buy into aged care housing? There must be a lot of people worried about the future. This is not a typical Australian “whinge” but an earnest enquiry as to the solution for a lot of people. Name supplied

Help for our seniors to stay local ELDERLY residents could avoid a heartbreaking move away from their home towns and be able to retire locally under a new Palaszczuk Labor Government initiative to build adaptable housing in regional communities. The Deputy Premier and Minister for Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning Jackie Trad said a pilot scheme would target up to four towns in Central West and North West Queensland. “The Ageing in Place Project is about caring for people as they enter their senior years,” Ms Trad said. IF YOU have ever thought about moving into a retirement community but are not really sure where to start, make sure you attend one of the Park and Village Information Link’s free community legal information events about retirement living options in Queensland. The Park and Village Information Link (PAVIL), operated by Caxton Legal Centre in Brisbane, is gear-
Deputy Premier of Queensland Jackie Trad
“It provides suitable housing so that people can stay in their towns, close to friends and family. “Too often, residents in our more remote or regional towns are confronted with
the difficult decision to move to a bigger centre because of a lack of appropriate accommodation. “Economic Development Queensland will shortly engage with local governments, the development sector and community organisations to identify candidate towns to pilot the initiative. “Already, early discussions with Barcaldine, Winton, Longreach and Cloncurry for example have confirmed strong interest in this exciting project”. The strategy includes building one and two bedroom lowset duplex and
villa homes featuring wider hallways and doorways to accommodate wheelchairs. The design includes kitchen benches set at different heights, reinforced bathrooms for the inclusion of handrails and accessibility equipment, and personal safety switches. The safety switches will provide immediate assistance and allow care and support services to be provided in the home, delaying the need for aged care. “It is important we support regional Queensland to have appropriate size and accessible dwellings,” Ms Trad said.
“In many centres there is a lack of diversity in home types, so downsizing is sometimes not an option and can lead to people moving from the town where they have lived their lives. “Compared to metropolitan areas, these remote areas often lack a highly competitive property development sector.” These projects will also bring an economic boost to the towns, employing local trades and services where possible and providing apprentice training opportunities. Another positive aspect is technology to make the

Libraries across South East Queensland will host these free legal information events from March to July 2016. Coming soon is Noosaville Library on April 18, 2016 at 10 am, where PAVIL lawyers will talk about key
features of retirement villages and manufactured home parks. Specific topics that attendees can expect to learn about include: documents and contracts, fees and charges, maintenance responsibilities and what specific questions to ask before signing on the dotted line.
Alternative retirement living options are also canvassed within the presentation. The talks aim to give prospective residents a better understanding of the difference between a retirement village and manufactured home park as well as knowledge about what questions to ask to find out what will
suit their needs. ‘We recognise that making the decision to downsize or relocate to retirement accommodation can be an emotionally charged time’ says Catherine Stallard, lawyer with PAVIL, ‘and it is important that all options are considered ahead of time to ensure that the decision is well informed and

This includes community solar panels, storage batteries and essential circuits which could enable them to operate off the grid during blackouts. “As well as being energy efficient, they will also be water efficient, providing a comfortable home with reduced energy bills,” Ms Trad said. Big Bob retires from the job By JIM FAGAN
BOB Abbot was sitting on the veranda enjoying the view of Noosa River from the Noosa Council office at Tewantin, something he has done since 1982, except for a break for four years when he was mayor of the Sunshine Coast Regional Council. “I’ll miss it. For me, Noosa is not the beaches. My Noosa is the river,” he told Seniors when we called to ask him how he felt about his decision to retire after the council elections on March 19. Bob is 65 and for more than half his life he has been in public office. He is currently deputy mayor of Noosa Council (a position he has held twice before). He was also mayor for one 11-year period (1997–2008). He’s also had his share of local turbulence, opposing developers, at one time being sued for $20 million by
one of them in the ‘80s and ‘90s and, of course, in 2007 leading Noosa’s losing battle to stop the forced amalgamation with other Sunshine Coast Councils. Certainly, the highlight of his career was when, with the catchcry “Big Bob for the Job” he was elected

Noosa, Cooroy launch Tech Savvy Program for Seniors Help to boost your skills
By GAIL FORRER
NOOSA Council is first off the mark with the Palaszczuk Government, Telstra and the State Library’s Tech Savvy Program for Seniors. Funding of $780,000 has been provided to 38 local councils across Queensland and Noosa Library, with its grant of $16,980, has already started its program of 88 events, all geared to boosting seniors’ tech skills in today’s digital age of iPads, Androids, Apps, eBay, eBooks, Facebook, online shopping and more. Ross Duncan is director of Queensland’s regional access and public libraries and he was in Noosa to launch the program. He told Seniors he expected 15,000 Queenslanders would this year boost their tech skills.
“There’s a massive, insatiable demand for this from elderly people. Computers for too long have been a barrier for them to participate in society, to connect with friends and their families if their families move away. “I think what we will find as we go through the training that new needs will emerge. We’ll then go back to Telstra and discuss future opportunities. “The aim with this present one is to help seniors to become a lot more confident with technology.” Ross said any library service or any community organisation was free to access the training online and download and run their own training sessions. “I encourage any seniors who have ever wanted to improve their technology skills to sign up for this free

ner to Kokoda. In a direct line the distance is 97 kilometres but the actual walk was about 130 kilometres. A group of eighteen commenced the journey but only seven finished. John is the oldest man at seventy six years to have completed the walk. During the walk this area was experiencing what would be considered a drought. Even so the track was very slippery on the steep climbs and they had to wade through waist deep streams. This brought home to him the difficulty our troops experienced during the campaign which was fought during a very wet period. A visit to one of the war cemeteries where there are two and a half

The Probians’ club is small in numbers, but that does not inhibit the members as there are many functions organised to Brisbane theatres, luncheons, bus tours, etc. The first meeting for 2016 was very well attended with about forty members present. The guest speaker, Robbie from Smart Pups presented a very well informed presentation and the overall result was most gratifying. I’VE never been a fan of self-help books. You? Don’t answer. You either love these books for the boost of motivation they give you, or you scoff at them as a bit mumbo jumbo. Or maybe you swing from one way to another. Whatever works for you. There are a zillion self-help books for the ageing person, myriad pages of information to make us seniors feel good about ageing, endless advice to keep us active/involved/relevant/ happy. I’m dipping in and out of a book called Ageing Disgracefully – it’s an old book I found in our garage covered in dust, obviously ready to be put out in a garage sale that never happened. I resurrected it, dusted it off
and it’s good again. Written very tongue-incheek, it’s full of wry and pithy little snippets. It cheers me up every time I open it. Let me quote you a few of the gems in the hope it will cheer you too. “Don’t lie about your age. Be proud that you’ve made it this far without losing your sanity or a major organ.” I have never felt inclined to lie about my age – until three weeks ago, when I celebrated a birthday with a whopping big O on the end of it. Now I have declared myself 49, staying that way forever. Let’s dip again into the little book: “Get on a motorbike and take off down the coast.” Nup, not doing that one. Ever. Another gem: “Candlelight – use it everywhere. Carry a lit candle in front of you to restaurants if you can manage it.” This one I like very much. Candlelight is the mature person’s best friend. It softens wrinkles, lifts jowls, removes furrows between the brows. Try getting all that
from Botox. Let’s dip again. “Have a garage sale. Over several decades, it’s amazing what useless crap you acquire that other people will pay good money for.” How true, how much crap is in your garage/cupboards/wardrobe? Sell it. (Or resurrect it like I did with the little book.) This one I like very much. “Don’t murder your husband/wife. You’re the first person they’ll suspect.” A good one to remember when the spouse gets so under your skin you want to hit him/her over the head with the crock pot. Here’s another. “Every once in a while give in to the urge to be appalling and tasteless.” Eh? But then. “Only twice a day.” This next one is my favourite: “Drink champagne.” It needs no further comment from me. And finally this one: “Always remember what Oscar Wilde said: ‘Youth is wasted on the young’. ” So you see, some self-help books do make you feel better. Now go and clear out your garage. ann.rickard@scnews.com. au www.seniorsnews.com.au

community news Simple philosophy behind yoga eases social suffering
Taraji journey: Therese Maguire
IF you think this sounds highly unlikely let me assure you, you are not alone...don’t you have to be able to put your foot behind your head and sing Jingle Bells at the same time to do Yoga? This concept of only needing a body and a breath to do Yoga was first thought up many moons ago by an Indian guy called Patanjali. He decided to describe and record the process of yoga. Many Indian sages believe that in the Golden Age (the first period of humanity as we know it) people meditated naturally and lived in a natural state of bliss. However, by the time the great sage Patanjali was born people were becoming very confused. They were comparing themselves with each other and losing sight
FROM PAGE 19
of the true purpose of Yoga. Yoga’s purpose is to enable our journey to physical and metaphysical freedom. Most of us believe that physical suffering is an inevitable stage of life. We also seem to buy in to the notion that stress is unavoidable if we wish to sustain our lifestyle. Patanjali describes the way out of this physical and metaphysical stress. He takes us on a journey to settle the mind and attain freedom from suffering. This journey to freedom is set out in eight steps: Honouring the natural laws of life (including authenticity to oneself); observing the rules for living (belief in something greater than self); very simple daily postures to prepare our body for meditation; specific breathing techniques; withdrawal of the senses; using specific effort to relax the mind: meditation and eventually the Settled Mind. Next month we will look at the specifics of the natural laws of life and how this relates to the Rejuvenation Revolution. Namaste, Tara.

community news Where there’s a Will, there’s a way to realise last wishes
"Everyday matters” with Carolyn Devries, CEO, New Way Lawyers
WILLS are like most other legal documents, people have a general idea of what they are about but they may feel daunted by the details and do not fully understand who should make a Will, when one should be made and what should be included. In our eight-part series, we hope to shed light on commonly unknown issues relating to Wills. More than 50% of adult Australians do not have a valid Will. According to research by
www.seniorsnews.com.au
the Western Australian Public Trustee, more than half of Australians either do not have a Will or do not have a Will which is effective on death. If you pass away without a Will, the law in the state where you live will determine who is responsible for distributing assets you own and who will receive these assets. This means that you will have had no control over who is in charge of distributing your assets and your assets may not be received by the people that you would have chosen. Even if you have a Will, your Will may be invalid if it has not been properly completed. A Will may be invalid due to common mistakes such as not having a proper witness or deeper issues such as someone having undue influence on the content. We encourage everyone to document their wishes in a valid Will. This information is intended as general legal information only for people living in Queensland and is not a substitute for individual legal advice.

There are no auditions, and members don’t need to be able to read music. But it’s not just a sing-along. ‘We are fortunate that our conductor and accompanist are both accomplished musicians, who help bring out the best blend of voices, and encourage us to challenge ourselves, whether it’s a modern pop song, a traditional air, a show tune or a classical piece,’ said Karen. ‘New members are always welcome.’ Sing Australia Sunshine Coast rehearses every Monday night from 7 to CONTINUED PAGE 23

HERNIAS are surprisingly common in men, with around 27% of males developing a groin hernia at some time in their lives. This compares with only 3% of women developing the same condition. The two most common age groups that this condition occurs in are those aged less than one year and those who are greater than 50 years of age. So what is a hernia? A hernia occurs when the inside layers of the abdominal wall have weakened, resulting in a bulge or tear in the groin or stomach. The wall of the abdomen has natural areas of weakness and hernias can develop at these sites as a result of heavy strain on the abdominal
part of the bowel is blocked. This leads to death of the tissue and presents as severe pain and tenderness of the area. As the wall of the bowel then breaks down and leaks bowel contents into the abdominal cavity, peritonitis (infection of the lining of the abdomen) and even death can ensue. Hernias are usually treated with keyhole surgery although for very large hernias, traditional open surgery may be required. There is usually some pain for around seven days after surgery and further discomfort for another week, but most office workers are back at work after two weeks. Those with more physical occupations, such as labourers, will need around six weeks before they can resume work. So if you notice a lump, get it checked by your local doctor. Remember that if you do have a hernia and it becomes painful and tender, it is considered to be a medical emergency and you need to get yourself straight to a hospital emergency centre. – Dr Michael Gillman www.DrMichaelGillman.com

wall, ageing, injury, incision lines from previous surgery or weakness from birth. The contents of the bulge can be fat or bowel tissue. Groin hernias usually show up as a bulge in the groin which slowly enlarges over time. In severe cases, bowel tissue can reach all the way to the scrotum. During human male development in the uterus, the testicle is formed up near the kidney and travels down to the scrotum bringing with it a blood supply comprising an artery and a vein, as well as the vas deferens which carries the sperm back up to the prostate region. The track that is created by the testicle coming down into the scrotum is not completely closed off and this leaves the area of potential weakness. There are a number of potential triggers for a hernia to develop. Chronic coughing or anything that causes increased pressure inside the abdomen, weakening of the tissues from obesity or medications such as cortisone type drugs, can all precipitate a hernia. The main concern with a hernia is strangulation, where the blood supply to

Frank’s transport vision for Noosa FRANK Pardon is one of the most experienced councillors running for re-election to the Noosa Council. He has a demonstrated track record, with over 13 years serving in both the current and former Noosa Councils. One of his current portfolios is Roads and Transport Infrastructure and he undertakes to maintain the focus on this area. “We have undertaken a lot of work on roads but that doesn’t mean we can rest on our laurels. There is still a way to go, we have to upgrade and rehabilitate the roads throughout Noosa as many are not up to standard in my books. “It goes further though, we also need to pedestrianise the streets. We have to improve our footpaths so that they all join up to enable people to get from one place to another, particularly for people who rely on motorised scooters. “Another key area is public transport. I’d like to see free electric buses all year. Hand in hand with this is to upgrade all our bus stops across the shire to ensure every single one has disability access.” Frank also believes in keeping rates low through a strong financial plan, pro-

Ignoring your prostate? What it may cost you openly about it. According to Indra Angkola, spokesperson for Graminex Australia, a company that specialises in developing prostate medication, men in general do tend to be tight-lipped about their current condition. “Its normal for men to feel uncomfortable talking about their prostate and their symptoms (of BPH), that’s okay, we understand,” says Mr Angkola, who does his best to personally answer questions
from individual callers. He has spoken to many concerned wives whose husbands are reluctant to acknowledge the issue. The key to this problem, he believes is to slowly encourage a culture where men should not feel ashamed to talk about their medical condition, especially if it concerns their “personal equipment”. The good news is that all this is starting to change, especially with the internet which allows men to be more discreet in search for

Thanks Caloundra Hospital Auxiliary for your support! SINCE its establishment in 1981, the Caloundra Hospital Auxiliary has raised almost $2 million for the Caloundra Health Service, with most of this accomplished in the last eight years. Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS) Chief Executive, Kevin Hegarty thanked the auxiliary members for their tireless efforts in achieving this significant fundraising milestone. More than 250 dedicated volunteers of the Caloundra Hospital Auxiliary have raised funds over the past 35 years to support the patients and staff of the Caloundra Hospital. “Each and every volunteer should feel rightly proud of the difference they have made and continue to make in support of the delivery of healthcare to our community,” Mr Hegarty said. Auxiliary president Clau-

dine Hagan said their volunteers were dedicated to working toward the funding of Dove Palliative Care Unit, Centre for Living (providing palliative care in the home), and purchasing additional equipment for the comfort and support of patients. The auxiliary has just raised more than $100,000 to purchase four state-ofthe-art patient beds (Versacare beds), and 15 specialty pressure reducing wheelchair cushions, largely through the sale of second hand goods at its opportunity shop, Bardo’s Bazaar. “This donation is really all thanks to the dedication of auxiliary members and the generosity of our community,” Ms Hagan said. “It’s a terrific example of how, through the donation of items, we’re able to give back to our community via the opportunity shop. In
turn, all the money raised from Bardo’s is donated back to the hospital.” Director of Nursing Dave Johnson said the Versacare beds provided increased comfort for patients. “They really are the best of the best. They adjust automatically to relieve pressure for patients; and have easy-to-use controls so people can also easily adjust position,” Mr Johnson said. “We’re extremely grateful to the auxiliary for this generous donation and their continued support.” Mr Johnson said that over the years the auxiliary had supported the hospital with substantial contributions, including the fit out of the palliative care unit, equipment for the physio and rehabilitation unit, state of the art laser technology for the ophthalmology unit, and new modern special needs beds.
“It’s amazing how through fundraisers, the operation of Bardo’s Bazaar op shop, and donations from Halcyon Parks Caloundra, the auxiliary has contributed to the hospital,” he said.
AS A daughter and a nurse, Kerri Howell was lucky enough to have the knowledge to be able to explain the options and processes to both of her parents, as they progressed through their journey into aged care. Sadly, these options and choices then became their decisions into ‘end of life care’. Now Kerri is the director of a company specialising in home care and feels compelled to help anyone out there struggling to navigate through the system. “It astounds me every day that so many seniors have no idea how to access help when they need it most. “It also saddens me that as children of seniors, there are so many sons and daughters that also are left confused and alone when trying to make choices to help their parents.” How do we go about accessing aged care services? What may happen to my pets if I cannot care for them anymore? How do I try and repay the love and sacrifice that my parent, partner or loved family member has shown me over the years of their unconditional love? Can I choose to stay at home over being placed into a nursing home? How can I retain my health and vitality, and age with dignity and respect as a senior member of community? How much does it cost to have care in my home, or move into a nursing setting? What is an ACAT and

why do I need one? Can I choose to stay at home to pass away with pride? Ultimately we all, as human beings, would like to empower ourselves with transparent knowledge and facts, so that we can prepare ourselves or our loved one with the informed choices of care. There is about to be one of the biggest changes to happen in the care industry, in 2017, with a full Consumer Directed Care approach to in-home care. To help navigate the changes, Kerri will be featuring a different forum in every edition of Seniors newspaper, commencing in April. Meanwhile an advisory board of doctors, nurses, palliative care physicians, social workers, pharmacists and many others have teamed together to create a live forum on the website www.bestincareaustralia.com.au. Last chance for TTRs THERE are rumours that transition to retirement pensions (TTRs) may be attacked in the May budget. They were introduced in 2006 in tandem with the Howard-Costello reform of the superannuation system. Many older workers wanted to cut down their hours and were happy to accept a reduced wage for doing so, but they did not want to give up work completely. The problem was access to super - employees cannot access their super until preservation age unless they are prepared to sign a statement that they are permanently retired. TTRs solved the problem and enabled the 55-and-overs to have their cake and eat it too. Australians could access their superannuation as an income stream while continuing to work.
Noel Whittaker
What made TTRs particularly attractive was the ability to continue contributing to super while drawing a tax-free income from the fund; it enabled anyone adopting the strategy to take advantage of the difference between the 15% tax on contributions and their marginal tax rate. Think about Jack, a 60year-old who earns $105,000 a year, which puts him in the 39% tax bracket. His employer is required to contribute $9975 (9.5%) to super for him, and he is able to contribute a further $25,025 to super as a concessional contribution.

After taking advice, he decides to increase the amount he salary sacrifices to super to $25,025. This will reduce his take-home pay by $15,266 a year. The contribution will incur a 15% entry tax of $3754, but he still enjoys the experience of having his superannuation boosted by a net $21,2713. He is $6006 better off - it’s a no-brainer! But he can put even more money in his pocket by starting a TTR. He would still salary sacrifice at the same level but he would start to draw a pension from a superannuation fund. Immediately that starts, his superannuation fund ceases to pay tax, which means higher after-tax returns. It’s possible that a pay cut of $15,266 a year net would leave the family finances short. If that’s the case he could use part of the income from the TTR to make up any shortfall - if his budget can cope, he could contribute straight back into superannuation as a non-concessional contribution, on which there is no entry tax. My advice is to start a TTR as soon as possible if you are eligible - after May it could be too late. Managing investments in volatile times “I will tell you how to become rich…Be fearful when others are greedy. Be greedy when others are fearful”. Warren Buffet THE malaise affecting equity markets and risk assets generally has shown no let up with Australian shares now joining Europe, Japan and emerging markets in a bear market. (Defined as a 20% or greater decline from the most recent high). Global growth worries could drive more shortterm weakness. But in the absence of a US/global recession historical trends inform us it is unlikely to be a deep and long bear market. When the winter comes you have the option to be like the bear and wait it out as long as you have a sound cave (good strategy) to rest in. You can keep in mind. Sharp falls are part of the course of share markets. Shares literally climb a wall of worry over many years with numerous events dragging them down periodically, but with the general trend ultimately rising and providing higher returns than other more stable assets. Selling after a major fall simply locks in the loss.
When shares and growth assets fall they are “cheaper” and offer higher longterm return potential. The key is to look for opportunities that the current fall offers – shares are getting cheaper, investment yields on shares and corporate debt are rising. You can’t predict the bottom but one way to manage it is to average in over time. While shares may have fallen in value the dividends from the market haven’t. So the income flow you are receiving from a well-diversified portfolio of shares continues to remain attractive, particularly against bank deposits. Shares and other related assets will bottom at the point of maximum bearishness, ie just when you and everyone else feel most negative towards them. The personal challenge is to resist the crowd mentality. In current volatile times the negative news is in our face. It makes is harder to stick to an appropriate longterm strategy let alone see the opportunities that are thrown up. See if you can turn down the noise and get sound advice. A strategic approach to investing is always advised. Despite the volatile begin-
ning of 2016 our clients have been pleasantly surprised in the buoyancy of their investments. This has been as a result of the inclusion of an international component of investments and the good dividends of their portfolio from last year’s market. GET in quick as you now have 37 days to apply for a Seniors Week subsidy of up to $1000. Seniors Week provides the opportunity to unite all Queenslanders to celebrate the valuable contributions seniors make in their communities. Whether as volunteers or in the workforce, seniors utilise their experience and knowledge as community leaders, carers, grandparents and advocates. “It’s on for young and old” has become a catchcry of the event and will be used again in 2016 to build on its success over the past two years. Starting on Saturday, August 13, Seniors Week 2016 will run through to Sunday
August 21 - nine days of celebrations. Last year 737 events were held from the Northern Peninsula Region to Mount Isa, Cairns to the Granite Belt and the Gold Coast. “For some living in rural and remote areas, Seniors Week is the one time of year they get to catch up with current and long lost friends,” COTA Queensland chief executive Mark Tucker-Evans said. “For others, Seniors Week is a way to assist in combating social isolation through the discovery of programs and activities, creating new friendships and remaining an active member of society.” COTA Queensland coordinates Seniors Week and re-
ceives Queensland Government funding to collaboratively plan and subsidise Seniors Week events and activities. The Queensland Government has provided $100,000 to subsidise activities during Seniors Week 2016. Applications are open for community organisations to apply for a maximum of $1000. Applications close March 31 2016. For more information about Seniors Week call COTA Queensland on 1300 738 348, email seniorsweek@cotaqld.org.au or visit www.cotaqld.org.au. Use of it several times a day, for even two or three minutes, while on the phone or having coffee, will improve your circulation. “My swollen ankles have reduced and I can sleep without pain,” writes Alex Simmonds. “And my night cramps have gone!” “Since using the Aircycle, my diabetic ulcer has healed and all the pain gone. My toes have stopped tingling and getting sore and are back to a healthy pink colour,” writes Richard Leighton. Aircycle exercises also strengthen leg muscles to
help support joints and relieve arthritic pain. Keeping your legs moving is not just good for your heart. It will help you remain mobile and independent.

TO CRUISE, or not to cruise? That was the question my wife and I faced when trying to decide what to do over the holidays. We’ve both done a fair bit of exploring, but never on the high seas, and tales of norovirus and sea sickness meant we had given it a wide berth. But as more and more of our family and friends returned from their own voyages with happy tales, we decided to take the plunge. We decided to push the boat out on a 12-day cruise around New Zealand. We chose the Kiwi route because we wanted something close and familiar and it offered lots of stops along the way, including the Bay of Islands, Tauranga, Wellington, Akaroa, Dunedin, Dusky, Doubtful and Milford Sounds, Hobart and Sydney. We flew in to Auckland three days before setting sail. This gave us a chance to explore the capital, which we thoroughly enjoyed, especially the impressive redevelopment around the docks. Bay of Islands: As this was our first port of call we chose to go with the travel agent’s tip and booked one of the pre-advertised excursions. Our day out included a visit to the kauri tree forest and scrambling through the nooks and crannies of a glow worm cave. Tauranga: Here we elected to do one of the ship’s specialty excursions. You’ll only hear about these once you’re onboard. It included the chance to explore Rotorua’s active volcanic craters, bubbling mud pools,

spouting geysers and the people who choose to live, work and play among it all. One of the highlights of the trip. Wellington: Here you can walk off the ship and be in the city centre in half an hour. We chose to do our own thing. We made our way to the closest information centre and in a short time were on our way to Zealandia, a protected natural area in the city where the area’s original fauna and flora is being restored. We returned to the city via Wellington’s cable car and spent a few hours exploring the city’s restaurants and shops. Akaroa: This is a small, picturesque French village nestled in an extinct volca-

no and here we also chose to follow our noses. Dunedin: A short bus trip from the docks and you are in the centre of Dunedin. Again we chose to do our own thing and in this instance we had to retrace the steps of long-dead relatives. That done, we returned to the city to catch a
short steam train ride along the coast. The return leg goes right past the harbour and we hopped off, stopped in a few of the village’s knick-knack shops before returning to the ship. When cruising Milford Sound find a comfortable spot on the deck and enjoy the vistas.
Dusky, Doubtful and Milford Sounds: There’s not the option to get off the ship here. But there’s no need to. You find a comfortable spot on the open deck and take in the vistas as the ship noses its way through New Zealand’s spectacular world heritage site. Hobart: Hobart was the one destination that lived up to its reputation. It was raining. But we didn’t mind this as we’d had spectacular weather on the rest of our trip. This wasn’t our first visit to the Tasmanian capital so it was an easy choice to do our own thing. Breakfast came first. No shortage of great eating spots here. Then a visit to Salamanca markets before going to the always brilliant Museum of
Old and New Art. Sydney: The highlight of the Sydney leg came before we’d even arrived in port. The Sydney to Hobart journey meant a day at sea and we chose to tour the inside of the ship. This included the bridge, the engine and anchor room, the staff quarters and the kitchen. Food, glorious food Cruises are notorious for the amount of food available. Buffet, restaurants and cafes. We tried out all options. From the buffet to the posh French number with a $50 cover charge for just walking through the door. The food was great, plenty of variety in formal or non-formal settings. You won’t go hungry.

Cruise ship is a game changer LOCAL agent Ucango Travel & Cruise is offering potential travellers a chance to sit down one-onone with a Scenic Luxury Tours representative to discuss and plan both European River Cruising in 2017 and the game-changing Scenic Eclipse Luxury expedition cruise ship. While Ucango will have a booth at the public information sessions at Mooloolaba on March 15, the agency is currently taking bookings for the one-onone sessions which will be held in each of their Maroochydore and Pelican Waters locations on March 21 and 22 respectively.
Ucango Travel and Cruise managing director said the one-on-one Guest Desk sessions allowed for clients to have a more personalised consultation. “The public information sessions are a great way to find out what Scenic are offering in terms of travel itineraries however the Guest Desks allow clients to ask specific questions so they can 1). get excited about potential travel plans and 2). ensure the product ticks all of their needs and wishes by speaking to someone who knows the product like nobody else,” Mr Hulsman said. Combine flour and salt and pepper in a bowl. Add calamari. Toss to coat. Shake off excess. Step 2: Heat oil in a large,

Festive food swaps to help you keep the kilos at bay this Easter
Try these tasty low-carb options
FOR many Easter often means too many eggs, hot cross buns and family feasts – which we unfortunately pay the price for well beyond the long weekend. However, Easter is actually the ideal time to swap carb laden dishes for tasty lowcarb meals. “Contrary to popular believe, Easter is an ideal time for low-carb eating, particularly with plenty of sumptuous seafood on top of the menu. “With a little pre-planning and some savvy switchouts the whole family will love, you can finish the holiday without feeling heavy,” said Colette Heimowitz, vice-president of Nutrition and Education at Atkins Nutritionals.
Follow these simple swaps to get set for a scrumptious Easter which won’t wreak havoc on your waistline. These easy low-carb Easter recipes might soon become family favourites: Atkins Easter Buns Makes 8 buns, 5.7g of carbs per bun Ingredients: ¾ cup (72 grams) almond flour ¼ cup (57 grams) coconut flour 3 eggs ¼ teaspoon baking soda ¼ teaspoon salt 1/3 cup almond milk ½ teaspoon cinnamon ½ teaspoon mixed spice 2 teaspoons grated orange peel 1 Atkins Endulge Milk Chocolate bar Method: Pre-heat oven to 175°C and line a flat baking tray with grease proof paper. Sieve the almond flour
Hot cross buns.
and coconut flour into a mixing bowl. Add the baking soda, salt, spices and grated orange peel, and half the Atkins chocolate bar chopped into small pieces and combine. Add the eggs and almond milk and mix well. Divide the mixture into 8 even parts. Using your hands, roll the mixture into balls. Place
the balls of mixture onto the lined baking tray and squash down gently to flatten the base of each ball. Using a knife, carve a cross (about ½ centimetre deep) in the top of each bun. Create slivers from the remainder of the Atkins bar, and place these into the carved lines to create chocolate crosses. Bake in oven for 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the centre of a bun comes out clean. Enjoy fresh out of the oven. Or, if the buns have cooled, cut in half and lightly toast on a sandwich press to warm. Store in an air-tight container in a cool place. Atkins low-carb chocolate Mousse Serves 4, 3.5g of carbs per serve Ingredients: 120ml double cream 1 tsp stevia (or your choice
An extraordinary woman’s life At the Drop of a Veil/ Marianne Alireza IN THE 1940s a pretty, young, Californian university student fell in love and married a fellow student. Nothing unusual here, except the fellow student was from a Saudi Arabian royal family and her marriage made her the first western woman to marry into a high-ranking Saudi Arabian family. Ali Alireza was majoring in business and the young woman was studying romance languages when they met in a paleontology class at the University of California at Berkeley. They married in 1943, the year Marianne Alireza graduated. Alireza says she had no illusions of what it would be like to wear a veil and a long gown constantly. “Ali was very honest about what my life would be like. On my engagement night he went all over it again and made sure I knew.” In 1945 the couple moved back to Saudi Arabia and suddenly Marianne found herself veiled and cloaked, living in another culture and listening to a foreign language. “There were no roads, no hotels, no stores, no elecwww.seniorsnews.com.au
tricity. We didn’t go out, and we didn’t do things. We lived together,” she said, referring in particular to the women of the family. For twelve years Marianne Alireza lived within a female group composed of her mother-in-law, sisters-in-law, and various children and servants. During that time she experienced a range of emotions as she struggled within primitive housing conditions, tasting new food, adjusting to a desert environment and in particular the strict rules for female behaviour. Love can lead you through unexplored territory and in this case Marianne Alireza’s personal commitment to her marriage gave her courage and strength to overcome the obstacles of life in a foreign civilisation A reading of this book in 2016, not only exemplifies the contrasts and similarities of different worlds, it takes into account the fluid role of women, social
changes in the last 50 years, and the effects of oil wealth on Saudi Arabia. Marianne chronicles her early perceptions, her choking anger at female confinement, living conditions and her diplomat husband’s long work-enforced separations. Equally, she describes her wonderful experiences as she and her family travel abroad on the Queen Mary and spend time in posh hotels in London and apartments in Paris. All the time, her love grows as she gives birth to her five children and develops a firm, lasting and respectful friendship with her mother and sister-in-laws. Her privileged position allows her to attend Europe’s great gatherings of royal weddings and funerals. After 12 years of marriage, a friend’s phone call to her while she is staying in New York advises that her husband has taken a second wife. At this point
her life takes another unexpected turn as she successfully fights to stay with her children. Today Marianne lives in the United States, she is the matriarch of five children, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. She calls her children global citizens, who move easily between the two worlds and she promotes international cultural understanding. While she acknowledges the limitations on Saudi Arabian women. She has said: “Women there have rights - of course they do. They also have great power and they exercise it behind the scenes, many running the administration of very large families.” In 1990 in a newspaper interview she added: “While many Western women look on the veiled Muslim women with pity. “If you want the truth, Saudi women feel sorry for Western women. They see beauty contests and girlie magazines in the West, and they say, ‘Women in your world are sex objects.’ To them it’s abhorrent.” Review by Gail Forrer

ABOUT ATKINS: the original low-carb eating approach, the Atkins program has been scientifically reformulated as the Atkins Nutritional Approach – an easy to follow, flexible four-phased program that helps followers build a diet around whole foods rich in vitamins and ‘good carbohydrates’ including low sugar fruits, leafy green vegetables, whole grains, nuts, legumes, dairy, good fats and protein (fish, poultry, red meat and tofu) – while at the same time eliminating highly processed carbs such as white flour (white bread, white pasta) and sugar.
Love affair with food shines through recipes Autumn Harvest – recipes by Maggie Beer Lantern, an imprint of Penguin Books MAGGIE Beer’s love of food is infectious. The passionate foodie first shared her joy in 2007 with the original Maggie’s Harvest edition. It has since evolved into four seasonal paperbacks – Harvest Winter, Spring, Summer and now this edition Autumn. In her signature detailed and descriptive style, you will find a collection of more than 90 of Maggie’s autumn recipes. She writes evocatively of some her favourite ingredients including crabapples, guinea fowls, quinces, walnuts and partridge. This goes beyond a retail outlet and often traces sources back to the farm, the growing, harvesting and finally the making of a beautiful recipe and the dinner party where it was enjoyed. Former Coast restaurateur Christine Perkin followed the Fig and Walnut Tart recipe and delivered a memorable dessert. Maggie said it is one her most requested desserts – “which is almost embar-
rassingly simple.” Christine agreed it was a pleasantly easy creation. “Firstly, I cooked small tarts which came out crispy and then I made the larger one which was beautifully moist. “I thought it would be much sweeter, but it came out quite lovely with an unusual texture.” The book takes you back to the roots of food. It is a simple, yet complex work from a committed lover of food. Her own words best purvey the tantalising zeal that runs throughout the book: “My passion for food has given me so much in life – a sense of purpose, a delicious anticipation of each new day and gifts of much deeper kind than financial,” she said.
