The history of a small town told in the pictures of clay tiles and historical photos By JIM FAGAN

SUNCOAST Clayworkers Association president Jackie Gasson admits to a feeling of quiet happiness as she watched the unveiling of Eudlo’s Story Wall this month. Three years ago she had the idea of telling the past and present story of the early timber town by creating a Story Wall the whole community could enjoy. The result –a three-metre long wall with more than

200 tiles of historical photographs now located in Rosebed St in the Sunshine Coast hinterland town. “I wanted to create something the Eudlo community could be proud of and visitors to the area would be able to identify with. “Association members took the historical photographs and made them into ceramic decals which we fired on to clay tiles. “The children from Eudlo

State School also made decorated tiles as they represent the future.” Funding for the project came from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council. “The wall is a symbolic tribute to both those who have gone before us and those growing up in the area now,” she said. “The students and the community have created a unique piece of art that will be enjoyed by the Eudlo community today and future generations.”

tate cancer groups. “There are no free get out of jail cards but if men follow a precise fitness program before and after surgery and, provided there are no post-surgery complications within six months of the operation, less than three to four per cent need have ongoing incontinence.

THE meeting room is filled with more than 70 men of senior years – 15 of them with their partners. A grey-haired man stands up, “Hi, my name’s Ian and I was told I had prostate cancer about four weeks ago. It’s caused me some emotional problems and I would love to talk to someone.” The empathy in the room is instantly so intense as to be almost tangible. This scene is nothing new to Rob Tonge, co-convenor of the Sunshine Coast Prostate Cancer Support Group. “We have blokes who are pretty shattered when they come here. A couple of weeks ago a man walked in here and he was in tears, then five of our blokes sat down and had morning tea with him and he left the meeting smiling.” Rob’s group meets once a month at Maroochy RSL and with 431 members is the second largest in Australia. It was formed in 2002 and takes in an area from Landsborough and Caloundra in the

south, then north to Cooran and west to Kenilworth taking in the Blackall Range townships, in all, 22 communities. The southern area is covered by the Glasshouse Country Support Group. In Australia, 20,000 Australian men are diagnosed with the disease annually and there’s a mortality rate of close to 3500. Rob is 77 and was diagnosed when he was 65. “I didn’t know which way to turn when I was told. I

reeled out of the doctor convinced I was going to die. I picked up a brochure about the group at the local library and spoke to the convenor. I discovered I wasn’t going to die immediately so I went to the meeting and that was it.” The group is very handson, operating on a selfhelp, peer support basis and the monthly meetings feature guest speakers who are doctors or other professionals in allied health services.

“Support and awareness are our primary roles. If someone has no family and no one to go with them to a medical appointment, we have a network to enable one of us accompany him. It’s important to have two people and we get the doctor’s permission to be there. We take notes and later sit down with the patient and go quietly through what was said. “We have a referral register which enables men

who are deciding on treatment to talk one-on-one with members who have had that particular form of treatment. “Also, because of our working relationship with Community Health, a social worker now attends our meetings to assist members. “We recognise the very important part played by partners and the strain they are under. We encourage partners to attend meetings. We have a marvellous lady on our committee who is our partners’ representative, Shirley Prior, of Tewantin. Rob says many new treatments have come through since he was diagnosed. “We have robotic surgery, doctors are more experienced, new drugs are being tested and a lot more research results are becoming available. “As lay persons our group has worked hard to build credibility within the medical profession and the hospital. I think we have achieved it. ” Info: call Rob (5446 1318) or email scprostate @gmail.com

Groovin’ with Hat Fitz about Woodford FOR six days, starting on December 27, 130,000 people ranging from young partygoers to retired groovers will cruise, sing, dance and lose themselves to the music and the moment as the Woodford Folk Festival celebrates its 30th year. Veteran blues/hill-style singer Hat Fitz calls the festival “a massive event”. “There’s nothing like it in Australia that I know of. We’re lucky to have it on our doorstep.” He should know as he’s watched it grow during the many times he’s been there in the last 25 years. In those early days, the festival was called the Maleny Folk Festival but a few

years later it became just too big for the Maleny Showground and moved to Woodford, about one hour north-west of Brisbane. Fitz was a 24-year-old Aussie folk and gospel/blues singer in 1990 and he talked with Seniors about the Maleny days. “There were just a few thousand people then. There was a big creek with a waterhole and everyone was skinny-dipping. “We had only three or four tents and mine was called ‘Eureka.’ It was the blues tent and that’s where I played. Everything was so kick-back and casual and I loved it.” As Woodford has grown so has his music. Fitz is the bearded half of now international singing duo, Hat Fitz and Cara, (wife, Cara

Robinson). Their UK manager is the boss of Manhattan Records and he spends a lot of time booking them all over the world. “We spend 12 to 14 weeks a year overseas in England, France, Germany and Holland, most of the European countries, as well as Canada and the U.S. We do about five to seven gigs a week. There are plenty more countries I would like to see,” Fitz said. “I met Cara in Ireland six or seven years ago and that’s when my music took the big left-hand turn. She’s a singer and she brought a lot of her Motown soul which we mixed in with my old-school mongrel blues or whatever you want to call it. Over the years we’ve been

Care Bears bring joy By JIM FAGAN

A CHANCE look at a story in Seniors Sunshine Coast Newspaper six years ago has led to an astounding 30,000 Care Bears, knitted beanies, berets and baby socks being donated to sick and injured children in hospitals in Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and ambulance services at Kawana and Caloundra. Last month another donation of some 200 bears plus 400 cuddly toys, blankets, outfits for premmie babies and library bags with colouring-in paper and pencils was received with grateful thanks by hospital staff at Brisbane Mater Mothers. This selfless task of bringing comfort to sick children was started in 2009 by Eric Brusewitz (78) and wife Dawn Chalkley (75) who live in a retirement village in Kawana. While their work is still continuing, it has been greatly reduced because of ill-health and they are now appealing for help from volunteers. Eric said the Care Bears were popular. “They are

soft and cuddly and we try to have them in every ambulance on the Coast. As well as bringing comfort to sick and traumatised chil-

dren, the Care Bears are also bringing joy to their makers. “We have ladies who make up to 30 bears a month and

they tell us, ‘If it wasn’t for this knitting, I’d fall asleep in front of the television all the time. Now we have something to do’,” he said. Dawn said that over the years there have been up to 150 volunteers they could call for help. “Now we’re down to 25 to 30, who live all over the Coast. “Until very recently every two or three months we would drive about 300 km to pick up the volunteers’ work. “Because of our ill-health, that’s been curtailed and as a result we have lost a lot of knitters.” Dawn said there were a number of ways to donate – cash donations, knitting or collecting the knitting. Does she think that without new help, she and Eric will have to stop their valuable work? “Not as long as we are alive. You only have to see joy on the nurses’ faces when we go down to Lady Cilento and they’ve got these things to give to the kids.” For more information, call Dawn on 5493 2823.

The Best Christmas Gift Ever

“Usually for Christmas, my children buy me towels or pillows and once even a basket for the cat. Last year, after a wonderful Christmas lunch in the park with my family, we came home and I found that for a Christmas gift my son had organised the replacement of my old toilet seat with an electronic Bidet toilet seat. I had seen them advertised on TV and thought what a great idea. I was absolutely shocked and thrilled to find I now have one on my toilet.”

After two weeks of having my new Bidet, I wondered how I had ever survived previously without it. All I have to do is sit down on my nice warm seat and go to the loo, and once I am finished I simply press a button and I get a warm water wash and a gentle stream of warm air dry. Now almost a year later, it has changed my life, I have saved a fortune in toilet paper and, I see going to the toilet as a time of luxury.

Talented artist loves to travel By JIM FAGAN

The interview: Continuing our series in which we feature the interesting, offbeat and innovative lives of our Coast neighbours PASTELS, pencils, water colours or oils, in fact specialising in any one of the fine arts is Carolyn Sheather’s joy but the 57-year-old admits being an artist in the studio can be fairly solitary life so, when you can share your time and your talent with other people, it’s “magic.” For her the ultimate is to take a group of local creatives to exotic locations like the Greek Islands, Italy and France just as she has done for the last five years. In that time she has had six art tutoring tours and another two are planned for June and October. Award-winning Carolyn lives at Palmwoods and she told Seniors “The first visit to the Greek Islands in

We’ve all started to keep one at some time, a diary that is. It might have been when we were eight years old, determined to keep it going forever then some new interest came along and the diary was put away in the toy box. Or maybe when we were older we thought it would be something nice for the family to read one day and, who knows, maybe you’re still writing yours. They call it “artist journaling” and Carolyn alcialist get from the Sunshine Coast to the Greek Isles? “I had a friend who introduced me to an art tour company which did tours to the islands and we decided to work together. I will do the art facilitation.” Later, in October, she will take another group to Italy visiting Venice, Orvieto and Rome which she describes as “visually and culturally stunning.” That Tour is also facilitated by a local tour guide. Carolyn came to the Queensland 24 years ago from Victoria, living first in

Hervey Bay for four years, then Maleny for nine years before moving to Palmwoods ten years ago. She is highly regarded as an artist and teacher and conducts workshops in towns like Maleny, Kenilworth and Landsborough. Five years ago she introduced her successful pastel classes to the Noosa Arts and Crafts Association at Wallace House, Noosaville.

community news

This is the place for active ageing Caloundra services the baby boomers Caloundra is home to around 80,000 residents and there’s no doubt the fastest growing age group is seniors. The city’s Chamber of Commerce Tourism and Events chairman Bill Darby tells how Caloundra’s reaching out to baby boomers. IRRESPECTIVE of what brings over-50s to Caloundra, one thing is for sure; the migration of baby boomers to the area won’t be slowing down anytime soon. All the economic indicators point to decades more growth in population numbers and, with seniors living longer and healthier lives, the ageing will have more influence over our economy than ever before. From a business and tourism point of view, it’s great news that Caloundra has so much appeal to the over-50s. It’s safe, clean and just an awesome community of which to be a part. The great news for the over-50s, is that Caloundra’s

Bill Darby, Tourism and Events Chairman, Caloundra Chamber of Commerce

leading tourism and business groups, as well as Council, have spent a lot of time and money researching what services best cater to our seniors. There is currently (and has been for some time) a coordinated effort to ensure Caloundra delivers the very best facilities for our active ageing population. In 2013, focus groups identified safety and access to be fundamental requirements for an ageing community. Subsequently, the cornerstones of Caloundra’s new street-scap-

ing projects (soon to commence) include suitable bright lighting to parks and pedestrian walkways and a significant reduction in trip hazards beside roads and on footpaths. Improved way-finding signs and a more extensive network of pathways will aid locals and visitors alike. Bringing back the vibrancy of Caloundra’s shopping precinct is priority Number One. Our historic and beautifully shaded main street is changing for the better. It seems that every few weeks a new café or specialty shop is opening in the CBD and the locals are discovering new reasons to venture into town. Our award winning Caloundra Street Fair transforms Bulcock Street every Sunday morning. Twilight markets along the beachfront boardwalk over summer bring visitors in from all over the Coast. As the new communities of Kawana and Caloundra South grow over the next two decades, the Cal-

oundra CBD will play an all-important role as the region’s lifestyle heart. Plans are afoot to build new residential-style apartments in the CBD precinct that will be accessible, affordable and convenient to all Caloundra’s amenities. Into the future, residents of Caloundra will continue to enjoy the balance of CBD convenience with the coas-

(Caloundra) is safe, clean and just an awesome community... tal ambience that typifies our surrounding beaches. Not surprisingly, proximity to medical, allied health

and wellness services have been identified as critical to an ageing population. Caloundra has an excellent public hospital as well as being near the Sunshine Coast University Hospital when it opens in 2016. held their final Cent Sale of 2015 on Friday, November 27. A great time was had by all with heaps of prizes up for grabs. The raffle prize was a beautiful patchwork quilt and cushion made by Lyn, one of the branch members. The sale was also the opportunity to invite Andy Young and Michelle Metcalfe from Integrated Family and Youth Services for morning tea, and to present them with Christmas donations. Members at the QCWA Maroochydore are happy to support the IFYS Foster Care to make a difference and support the wonderful work they do. Trauma Teddy Donation At the Wharf Tavern on December 7, the SunshineCoast Doll, Bear, Craft and Miniatures Club donated dozens of trauma teddies to the care of Senior Constable Mark Readman, to assist police investigators when dealing with child abuse and domestic violence cases. This small gift provides comfort for children going through difficult circumstances and provides police with a way to tangibly show empathy and gain much needed rapport. We would like more retired single men to join us. Over 65 to 75 is our age group. We need a balance of men to enjoy our social group outings. It was an Open event and bowlers came from many parts of the Sunshine Coast to compete. Overall winners were a team from Woombye, skippered by our very experienced Peter Harris. Congratulations to our greenkeeper, Geoff Steele, for preparing very true greens, and to Peter Harris who organised the days. Over five Friday nights, Woombye Bowls Club hosted a Major/Minors event with bowlers from our winning Division 2 team pairing up with bowlers from our winning Division 6 team to compete.

Sunshine Coast Contract Bridge Does the card game of bridge improve your memory and ward off dementia? Many scientists think so. The Sunshine Coast Contract Bridge Club runs beginners classes just once a year. Bookings are now being taken for the next series starting Wednesday, March 2. The course runs over 14 weeks and includes four review sessions. The classes are held Wednesdays 9am to noon. Instructor Wendy O’Brien said when the course is completed participants will be beginners are then skilled enough to join supervised play which is held at the club every Wednesday morning. Beginners or those taking the course as a refresher can then choose from several levels of play with games held throughout the week at the club rooms at the northern end of the Elizabeth Daniels Sports Complex on Syd

Laguna Estate - a lifestyle choice ADVERTISEMENT

Is ‘grandma’s ghetto’ your idea of a retirement village? If so, stop right there! There is nothing further from the truth. In the past, most residents entered these villages aged in their seventies as part of a move to downsize, decrease maintenance responsibilities, experience a greater sense of safety and security, or for health and lifestyle reasons. Today, younger retirees from age 55 are seeing the benefits of relocating to a retirement village, with the emphasis on lifestyle and making the move a liberating experience. To those who say that they are not ready for such a move, many of the residents at Laguna Estate say that they wish they had made the decision earlier. It has given them the freedom to travel, visit family or just pursue new hobbies without any of the worries they previously had with the upkeep and security issues of their previous home. Combining outstanding resort facilities with stylish homes in a fully landscaped environment, this village strikes the perfect balance between privacy and independence whilst encouraging a vibrant and rewarding community in which to live. There are spacious villas and serviced apartments from which

to choose, all in a quiet, peaceful location yet so close to all the vibrant action of Noosa. The range of facilities is cleverly geared towards anyone over the age of 55, whether you are physically active or prefer a quieter lifestyle - and the grandchildren are welcome here. so what will sell you on your decision to make Laguna Estate your home? It is a combination of many things – particularly the smart community facilities and the activities which cater for all lifestyles, but also the quality finish of both the new and the refurbished villas, the resortstyle feel, the professional and hugely cheerful staff and the low monthly fees. At some time in the future you may need living assistance but this too is catered for at Laguna Estate with assisted care apartments available. Three meals a day, cleaning, weekly towel & linen changes and 24 hour on-call emergency staff are all part of the service. Laguna Estate is a class act – phone 1800 012 049 for lots more information and an appointment to view this special retirement estate at 21 Lake Weyba Drive, Noosaville. Still having a hit, and some low-key fun, on the tennis court

WHEN over-50s estate Monterey-Noosa River Heights in Tewantin was built about a dozen years ago amenities included a tennis court. Quick off the mark were not one, but two tennis clubs both of which are still functioning today. One of the earliest players was Joan Barton who has been a member of the Tues-

day morning ladies’ club since 2002, soon after the clubs started at Monterey. There are no fixed numbers. Players go away on holidays and come back when they return. There can be 10 players or sometimes they’re down to four. One member recently retired at 93 but only after she developed a minor condi-

try to be serious. “We do keep score, the person serving keeps the score,” Joan said. “While some members go away for a while, now other

ladies are coming in from outside Monterey to fill the gaps.” The other club takes things a little more seriously (but not much more). Players meet on Monday and Wednesday evenings 5-6.30pm. Les and Vicki Checkley have been playing for eight years, after transferring from playing comp at Noosa Tennis Club.

There are six or more who line up every week to have a hit but again, numbers vary, depending on who is on holidays. Average age is 6568. “We are C-grade players,” said Les. “We play to rules but it’s more social, all the competition has gone out of it now, we just enjoy playing, it’s nice and relaxing.”

or outside the classroom. A reading session is 20 minutes, where each child is one-on-one with the dog team. Books are chosen to suit the student’s reading level. During the session,

the handler often speaks through the dog, such as; “Sam doesn’t understand what is happening on this page, could you help him out?” The child becomes the teacher; and their confi-

dence soars. After speaking with cofounder Janine Sigley, Holly was assessed and judged to have the calm gentle temperament to be an ideal Story Dog. Petra Westphal and Holly are now the first Story Dog team on the Sunshine Coast, based at Noosa Pengari Steiner School. Story Dogs would like to hear from would-be volunteers. Balanced superannuation funds still exceeded cash and inflation but are on track for their softest returns since 2011. Peering into 2016 Rather than economic mayhem as some predict, there are good reasons to believe we will see a continuation of the constrained uneven global growth that we have been seeing over the last few years. Major economic downturns are invariably preceded by either economic or financial “overheating” and there are no signs of that. The structural combination of slower population growth, a more cautious approach to debt and structural problems in the emerging world most likely will keep a lid on global

my is likely to continue to rebalance away from mining. Further monetary stimulus in the form of more RBA interest rate cuts and a lower $A are likely to be needed. Investment horizon The combination of okay global growth, still low inflation and easy money remains positive for growth assets. But ongoing emerging market uncertainties combined with Fed rate hikes and geopolitical flare-ups are likely to cause ups and downs. When the new year begins it could be time to review your investment strategy to ensure you are at pace with global themes. WHILE it has not been a bad year for investors, overall returns have been constrained by a combination of a slowing manufacturing sector in the US, another downturn in Japan, a further slowing in China and deep recessions in Brazil and Russia. As a result global growth remained uneven with an average of around 3%. However, while this is causing ongoing nervousness amongst investors it’s not bad. Stronger growth would only bring inflation and interest rate worries. Inflation remained low or fell in developed countries as excess capacity and falling commodity prices continued to have an impact. The downturn in commodity prices continued as oversupply faced slower demand led by China. Bad news for commodity producers and related investments, but good news for most developed countries. Despite terrorist attacks in Paris, the escalating war in Syria and tensions in the South China Sea, there was not much lasting impact on markets. In Australia the mining slump continued causing economic growth to remain sub-par. This saw the RBA cut the cash rate to a record low of 2%. The $A fell another 10% and this helped boost the returns from global shares, once translated into Australian dollars. While global growth remains steady, its fragility

Historic water city thrills

Things to do in Venice without breaking the bank

You’ll find something pretty around every corner.

WELCOME TO VENICE NO MATTER your age or your travel experiences, your heart will surely beat a little faster as you enter Venice. This historic city and living museum enchants and thrills from the minute you arrive to the moment you leave. Yes, it is clogged with tourists most of the year, and yes, it can be expensive, but it’s a dreamy destination to top every traveller’s bucket list, and if you’re careful you can do it on a budget. FIVE THINGS TO DO IN VENICE – WITHOUT BREAKING THE BANK. Walk: Put on your walking shoes, don a hat, take a bottle of water and get lost. No matter how many tight alleyways you wander, canals you traverse or tiny piazzas you stumble upon, you’ll find yourself back at St Mark’s Square sooner or later. Sit: There are many low walls by the canals to stop for a little rest. Myriad cafes sell inexpensive focca-

cias and pizzas where you can sit and snack. Beware sitting in any of the cafes lining St Mark’s Square. Seductive they are, but if the orchestra is playing, you’ll be charged an “orchestra tax”, and a cup of coffee could cost you $20. Stand by the famous Caffe Florian in St Mark’s under the Procuratie Nuove, and sway to the soft music. Take a tour: While Doge’s Palace and St Mark’s Basilica are a must-do, the queues could see you waiting for three or more hours. Not good for us seniors. Website viator.com offers a number of walking tours where you can skip the queues. Paying to walk, annoying, no? But queueing for three hours? Board a vaporetto: A gondola ride is impossibly romantic...but horrendously expensive and well...getting in and out of a gondola is not easy for the senior traveller. The vaporetti (water taxis) cost just a couple of euros and will take you all over the main waterways past every historic sight.

All of Venice is a post card. Get out and walk and lose yourself in the beauty and adventure.

Buy a selfie stick: Hawkers sell these everywhere, and for five euros (less if you bargain them down) you’ll have more fun that you thought possible taking photos and making videos of yourself against the gorgeous Venetian backdrops. DELICIOUS DINING. The further you venture from St Mark’s, the less touristy the restaurants, but they are still few. Best to accept the inevitable and dine at one of the myriad pretty restaurants by a canal. Order a pasta dish (we had the most delicious spaghetti pesto ever at the Hotel La Piscina Ristorante by the water), and be served by at-

A good trip with equipment, know-how

Right stuff makes a 4WD trip no drama

Here’s a tip to help: The gear, winching, low range THE TWO biggest mistakes people make time and time again are shock loading, and ignoring their winche’s duty cycle. Despite the manufacturer’s claims, winches aren’t that strong, in most cases you’re putting the full weight of your 4WD onto a brake that’ll fit in the palm of your hand. When you start bouncing a couple of tonne off it, brake failure is just a matter of time. Similarly, ignoring the duty cycle is another quick way to overstress the winches 12V motor. A duty cycle is a pretty straightforward thing. A 50% duty cycle means for every minute it runs, it needs a minute to cool down. Keeping your winching down to 30 second intervals will help keep the winch motor running strong and stop your batteries draining flat. With those two things in mind a winch can be a getout-of-jail-free card, allow-

shift a 4WD sideways, a skill that’ll come in handy should you ever slip off a track. If you can afford it, your 4WD should have a winch, it’s as simple as that.

Combining your cruise with lunch at the Pelican Waters Tavern or the Caloundra Power Boat Club, makes for a real treat. “I never tire of the changing picture of the Pumicestone Passage – whether it’s the wading birds coming and going (royal spoonbills are my favourite) or the colourful kite surfers showing off to the rest of us on the water. “We’ve just introduced a

I never tire of the changing picture of the Pumicestone Passage... new cruise in partnership with the Caloundra Power Boat Club at Golden Beach. The Quarterdeck Cruise on Saturday, departs from the Tripcony Lane Jetty at 11am and arrives in time for lunch at the newly refurbished Quarterdeck restaurant. “This is an opportunity for people to catch our 1930s style riverboat, enjoy just over an hour cruising the northern reaches of the Pumicestone Passage Ma-

rine Park before getting off at Golden Beach for a top quality meal whilst overlooking the Passage from the Power Boat Club’s Quarterdeck,” Mr McBryde said. “To cap it off, people can enjoy a glass of wine with their meal, all at members’ prices, and then catch the Power Boat Club’s courtesy bus back to their home or in the case of visitors to their hotel. Now that’s service!” Booking on line via our website www.caloundracruise.com is a new thing for us and allows discounts to be easily offered. Give it a try - see advertisement for discount offer or use Code SNR25 for 25% off the Quarterdeck Cruise. Whichever cruise you choose; you won’t be disappointed.

THE red carpet will be rolled out for visitors to North Stradbroke Island with the first 18 participants graduating from the inaugural Welcome to North Stradbroke Island program this week. Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said the program - an initiative of Redland City Council, Brisbane Marketing and Tourism and Events Queensland - would see visitors to the popular holiday destination welcomed with open arms and local knowledge. “This is a fantastic program that combines the local knowledge and passion of tourism operators with the natural beauty of Straddie to make this wonderful part of the world even more attractive to visitors,” she said. “We all know Straddie is a very special place with people coming from all over the world to experience its beautiful beaches and cultural history and these 18 graduates will play an impor-

tant role in ensuring their stay is a special one. “Having completed a specially designed Welcome to North Stradbroke Island online training course, these graduates have earned the privilege of being ambassadors for Straddie and will now use the skills and knowledge learnt through this program to make tourists feel more like guests rather than visitors. “Often known by its traditional name of Minjerribah, one of Straddie’s key points of difference is its cultural tourism and it is great that today’s graduates include representatives of the island’s traditional owners the Quandamooka people. The Welcome to Straddie program is part of the $170,000 State-funded Signature Straddie Package - a program delivering a range of tailored tourism-led initiatives over the next two years, delivering economic benefits to the city.

Quartet: It’s funny, moving and wicked QUEENSLAND Theatre Company’s Quartet is a hilarious, moving, deliciously wicked celebration of four exquisite artists, both in character and in our actors - many will remember them from countless theatre, television and stage appearances. You will all know the dashing Andrew McFarlane from his work in The Flying Doctors, The Sullivans, and more recently the award-winning Devil’s Playground and countless ABC series from Playschool to Glitch. Andrew’s last QTC appearance was in the award-winning production of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? His male partner in crime is the brilliant Trevor Stuart who most recently charmed QTC audiences in Design for Living. Kate Wilson has been an

Two decades of selling local arts and crafts TWENTY years ago the Gift Gallery, a place to display and sell the work of local arts/crafts people started. In its first year, it sold

$27,000 worth of highquality goods, and to this day the Gallery stands strong, selling more than $40,000 this year.

The Gift Gallery is open daily (excluding Christmas Day) 10am-4pm and is located at 5 North St, Caloundra.

integral part of QTC from the early days of the company and Christine Amor will be familiar to all from her ongoing role in The Sullivans. Quartet is set in a magnificent crumbling English country estate converted into a retirement home for ageing opera singers. We witness the highs and lows

of the stellar careers of these artists who refuse to put a full stop to their artistry. With the baby boomers starting to slow down, Quartet offers a glimpse into what really matters, celebrating the role of art as integral to our lives. The challenge is to rearrange a crossword which has been broken into 25 sections. One letter has been given to get you started. Work out which 3x3 square fits in with that letter and write in the letters. You can also shade the black squares if you find it helpful. After completing the first 3x3 area, work out which square joins on to it, and continue until you have made a complete crossword.

Retirement for ‘sparky’

Thinking about Christmas

Norma Gladman from Riverlands at Tewantin.

NORMA Gladman from Riverlands at Tewantin was snapped as she contemplated her 93rd Christ-

mas. Seniors Newspaper sends Christmas wishes to all the Riverlands residents from Editor Gail & staff.

LAST month, after 22 years, the man who invented the Cirlock System of Lockouts worked his last official day at Cirlock, Sunshine Coast. At his retirement lunch, business founder Erik Larsen recalled the beginnings of the business. “I was working as an electrical contractor for a NW Queensland Mining company. They wanted to have lockout devices installed on their electrical switchboards. There was nothing suitable available so I decided to design a system myself. It worked and it was approved by the mine.” This original Cirlock Lockout System is still being made and sold by Cirlock along with other products within the range. He said in the early days he started in a garden shed at a kitchen table. “I worked at it in my spare time while working as a contract sparky in Mount Isa. After a while I quit my

job and got a much larger shed workshop - which was needed when I started selling to many of Queensland’s mining and wholesale companies.” Erik was always looking at new design ideas and said the, “inventing of new products” was something he enjoyed the most. From the days at the kitchen table,

Cirlock embarked on an exciting journey, growing from nothing, to selling Cirlock designed and made products Australia wide and overseas. One special highlight was the 2004 company move to the Sunshine Coast. “We purchased a commercial building in Kunda Park and shifted everything

to there. It turned out to be a great move,” Erik said. “The move triggered a massive increase in sales and we had become a ‘real’ company.” “I’m proud to have both of our children and their partners involved in the business to continue it on,” Erik said.
