TOOWOOMBA hairdresser Hellen Teys’ hairdressing salon is part of a network of salons working with BreastScreen Queensland Toowoomba Service to encourage women to talk about their health.

Shenaed Bliss said the campaign was designed to prompt local women to have a tea or coffee in the relaxed setting of their favourite salon and chat with others about the importance of taking care of themselves. Ms Teys

said she was a volunteer with Look Good Feel Better.

“We also have a private wig room for fittings because we see quite a few ladies here who are going through treatment and who need wigs, so it’s

More than 15,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. It’s important to keep up-to-date with vital health checks.

Recently I attended a forum featuring South

American global expert on aging and age-friendly communities Professor Alexandre Kalache at the Queensland State Library.

He named a few things as important for joyful longevity, including lifelong learning and a sense of humour. For example he described one of his 103-year-old father-in-law’s last conversations. While he was in hospital the nurse inquired: “So you have three children.” “For now,” he replied.

This newspaper has not been around as long as Professor Kalache’s father-in-law. But we aim to have the stuff it takes to make it, including a rather cheeky sense of humour.

For many people, this is where the Queensland Country Women’s Association begins and ends; but they would be wrong. Whilst tea, scones and women are constant elements, there is a whole lot more to the QCWA than one might imagine.

Established in 1922, the QCWA has been both a conservative and progressive force in rural Queensland. Proud of its traditions, the role of family and maintaining links with the past, the organisation has also provided a platform for women to be seen and

The group’s dress code of red hats and purple outfits goes to the spirit of the group – the colours may not go together, they may not be a conventional choice, but they are bright and fun, so who cares?!

Local organiser Heather Smith said that members “enjoy a common bond of affection forged by shared

life experiences and a genuine enthusiasm for wherever life takes them next.

“It is a chance to dress up in purple and red and get together and have an enjoyable time,” Ms Smith said.

The group meets each week to have coffee, discuss many topics and decide where their next outing or luncheon will be.

Updates from the Toowoomba Region CBD Shuttle Bus Service

The Free CBD Shuttle Bus service has been extended until March 2017. The service is available to the wider general public to use.

Hours of operation are Monday to Saturday (excluding public holidays) 9:30am-2:30pm.

The service cannot be booked and will run on a 30 to 45 minute loop.

Council Cabs

Council is trialling a cab service to help older people and those with a disability travel to their local shopping centre.

The cab picks you up from your home and takes you to your local shopping centre once a week. The service will need to be pre booked by calling 1300 811 394 before noon on the day before your trip. You will travel in a shared taxi. It then takes you home at a set time a few hours later.

It costs $2 per person, per trip (which is $4 there and back). Council subsidises the rest of the cost of the fare.

If you live in one of the service areas, and are aged 60 or over, have a disability or hold an eligible concession or pension card, then you qualify to use the service.

You can also bring a carer or dependent children (under 10) with you for free. When you book, the operator will check to make sure you qualify.

Darling Downs’ rich war history

EVERY country town in Australia has one, our major cities a few. In far-flung corners of the old British Empire, they are present. Some see them as poignant reminders, some see them as morbid, others view them as places of quiet reflection and historical significance.

War memorials, in their various connotations, hold a special place in our society. A focal point of community activity on ANZAC and Remembrance Days, they are ever-present monuments to by-gone conflicts, of lives lived and lives lost, substitute graves for fathers, sons, brothers

and uncles who never made it back to Australian shores.

Such memorials also reflect our feelings of nationhood and identity, social conventions and tastes. They are a conscious and deliberate effort to capture and retain a moment in time.

With the imminent arrival of ANZAC Day commemorations, Seniors Newspapers takes a closer look at some of the many war memorials on the Darling Downs, their history, their background and their importance to local communities.

Tribute to young man’s bravery

THE “Digger” design – slouch hatted soldier, with downcast eyes on the Crows Nest War Memorial – pays tribute to veterans of both World Wars.

Among the names on the honour roll is that of John Alexander “Jack” French, recipient of the Victoria Cross for his gallantry during the Battle of Milne Bay. It was on the afternoon of September 4, 1942, that the young corporal showed incredible bravery.

Finding his company under attack from three Japanese machine-gun posts, he valiantly lobbed grenades into the first of the posts, returned to gather more grenades so as to take similar action against the second and the third, all while being fired upon by the enemy. The wounds he sustained took his life.

Jack French is buried at the Bomana War Cemetery in Port Moresby, but the people of Crows Nest remember their fallen son with the naming of the local library in his honour.

THE Victor Denton Memorial located at Nobby cemetery is the first known World War I monument erected in Queensland.

Paying tribute to local man Victor Denton, the monument is unique among such structures in that it was funded by the local community, perhaps reflecting the collective grief of losing one of their own.

Denton was a 20-year-old stockman whose riding skills and horsemanship were in great demand by army recruiters.

Among the early waves of Australians to see action in the Great War, he served as part of the 2nd Australian Light Horse Regiment before losing his life to “wounds” in the Dardanelles on the Gallipoli Peninsula on 31 May, 1915.

The broken column design of the monument represents the notion of a life cut short and is the craftsmanship of Bruce Brothers masons of Toowoomba. Located in the Denton family plot next to the graves of his parents, Victor’s memorial was unveiled during the famous March of the Dungarees – ironically, a recruiting march.

A NEW report links seniors’ long-term unemployment rates to lack of career planning.

Until they start planning for encore careers, mature-age Australians will continue to experience high long-term unemployment rates, a new report has found.

A National Seniors Productive Ageing Centre report entitled Change is inevitable, so plan for it, A survey of career planning among mature age Australians, studied the experiences, perceptions and likelihood of career planning of people aged over 50.

The findings show over half those in the workforce had never undertaken any activities to plan for their career.

Of those not working during the past five years, 77 per cent said they were unlikely to undertake career planning in the next three years.

History against relocation TOOWOOMBA City Councillors of 1984 courted controversy and high emotion with their decision to relocate the city’s Mothers Memorial.

Having stood proudly at the intersection of Ruthven and Margaret Streets for sixty years, the mere suggestion of moving it was viewed as sacrilegious by many in the community, for this location had served as both a recruiting and send-off point for soldiers in World War I. Families would wave off their men folk from this central location imbuing it with symbolism and importance.

Bearing the names of fallen soldiers, the memorial was funded in large part through the proceeds of flower selling.

Traffic concerns, however, overrode sentiment and on November 10, 1985, the memorial was relocated to its present site in East Creek Park.

It remains the central focal point for the city’s ANZAC Day commemorations.

“Planning can support people in a variety of situations including those wanting to extend their working life, change careers, return to the workforce after many years away or transition into retirement,” Mr O’Neill said.

“It also allows people to better respond to the work environment’s rapid changes, including technology, globalisation and economic restructuring.”

Mr O’Neill said the lack of interest in career planning presented many challenges for individuals and government: “Australians are increasingly expected to work past Age Pension age. Yet older people are still facing the barriers they did ten years ago. My advice is that if you’re hoping for career longevity, a bit of forward planning can help.”

Last casting call for plaster technician hospital’s mortuary alongside pathologists including the late Dr Roger Guard and the hospital’s first female pathologist, Dr Inara Strungs.

It was during these years that Mr Smith came to see the best, and sometimes the worst, of life.

“It was a varied job, and it wasn’t always easy,” he said.

“The injuries and deaths caused by car crashes and drink driving were, at times, horrible.

When seat belts and drink driving laws were introduced, there was a marked change,” he said.

After many years working in the mortuary and across the hospital, an opportunity for Mr Smith and his brother Keith, opened in the orthopaedic outpatients department.

Both took up positions as plaster technicians and collectively amassed a wealth of knowledge and experience that is unrivalled across the state.

AFTER more than 40 years of working at Toowoomba Hospital, plaster technician Clive Smith officially retired this month.

Mr Smith forged a career in setting broken bones and has become well-known not only at the local hospital, but also across the state for his skills and knowledge.

He trained during an era when orthopaedic surgeons provided tuition to anyone who showed an interest in learning.

“Plaster casting has become a field on its own,” Mr Smith said. “It needs to be done well, and if it’s not, deformities can arise.”

Mr Smith started his working life at Toowoomba Hospital in the mid-70s as a wardsman.

“There was gardening, driving the delivery truck, collecting laundry, cleaning or working in the mothers hospital helping ladies in and out of their cars,” he said.

Recognising women’s rights The aim of Zonta Clubs is to make a real difference in everyday life and cultivate friendships THE Zonta Club of Toowoomba Area Inc was chartered as a club of Zonta International in 1978. Current membership is around 60 and includes business and professional woman from many backgrounds.

The club is part of Zonta International, a global organisation of executives and professionals working together to advance the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy.

More than 30 000 members belong to more than 1200 Zonta Clubs in 67 countries and geographic area. Zonta International envisions a world in which women’s rights are recognised as human rights and every woman is able to achieve her full potential.

Toowoomba Zonta first vice-president and Fundraising Committee chair Kathryn Galea said she became involved through a good friend.

“I had been to several functions over the years and had admired the work of Zonta,” Ms Galea said.

Seniors Newspaper reporter Jennifer Graham asked Kathryn if she would share some of her personal and career history with our readers: A: “I was born in Longreach and then my family moved to Warwick where I attended the Presbyterian Girls College.

I completed a degree in Bachelor of Agriculture Science at the University of Queensland.

I am married to Victor and between us we have six children – four boys and two girls. The youngest is currently in Year 10 at Toowoomba Grammar School.

My career has taken me on an interesting journey. I was one of the first females employed by the NSW Department of Agriculture as a district agronomist and was based in Orange. I then lectured at the University of Queensland in weed science, agronomy and horticulture. I was the inaugural chair and then CEO of Condamine Alliance Natural Resource Management group.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Dr Kalache references his own country to define the demands of longevity.

“Do you remember the song The Girl from Ipanema,” he asked.

“Well that girl today is 76 and she is looking after her mother with Alzheimer’s.”

He asked the younger generations not to be selfish, but to be inclusive and imaginative.

He emphasised the importance of intergenerational activities and gender balance.

In terms of care giving, he said: “If a society is to be sustainable, we cannot just rely on women.

“We must bring men into these roles.”

Audience member Southern Cross University Professor Colleen Cartwright offered another imaginative step.

Thus begins the turtles’ long journey to the west coast of South America and back as 15-year-old adults to nest at Mon Repos when they mature.

The turtle discovery centre which is manned by volunteers has static displays and a sound and a video presentation which provide information before visitors are escorted to the beach.

Visitors are allocated to groups of around 60.

of the turtles to dig their nests and to lay their eggs, and the potential life cycle of the hatchlings.

The baby turtles (100 in this nest) erupt from the nest having dug their way out through around 25 cm of sand. As the turtles instinctively headed for the light and the water, they were caught so the visitors could get a close look and feel the strength in their little bodies and flippers.

We formed three lines, about two metres apart.

The centre line formed up like a tunnel ball team from the nest to the water’s edge. Each had brought a torch, which they shone up the beach to encourage the

hatchlings to find their way to the sea. A three-year-old boy stood with his dad, holding the torch, and was obviously terrified that he would step on a turtle.

The four-day odyssey started with a visit to the scenic Wyaralong Dam for scones and coffee. This dam was completed in 2011. It is the newest dam in south-east Queensland. The water is unsuitable for stock, crops or human consumption. The park provides more than 40 kilometres of trails for walkers, and riders of horses and mountain bikes. Tin Can Bay provided excellent accommodation and dinner in a restaurant

where we enjoyed the reflections on the water and the night life.

A waterfront breakfast at Barnacles café was followed by feeding the dolphins which visit daily for their regular snack.

Volunteers assist over 100 visitors daily to feed tiny fish to wild dolphins.

Government departments and environmental groups monitor the activity to ensure that the dolphins do not come to rely on the small daily ration provided by the visitors.

From Rainbow Beach we viewed the coloured sands in the distance before meeting at the surf club for lunch overlooking the ocean beach. The salvaged propeller of the “Centaur” is displayed in a memorial garden close to the shore.

We took the scenic route to Bargara for our overnight stay. We drove through forest and native vegetation bypassing Gympie and re-joining the Bruce Highway at Maryborough. A brief stop at the Peanut Van in Childers provided refreshment for the rest of the tour.

The night of turtle viewing led to a late start for the drive to Montville through the picturesque Blackall ranges. There was time to empty our wallets at the various

THERE is something about the number 7 coming before a big 0 that made me nervous for the entire year I was 69.

Like you, I was sick of reading about 60 being the new 40, and 50 being the new 21...all that rubbish.

I wanted to read about 70 being the new 30 which would have had my stamp of approval – but hadn’t come across anything.

Most writers, advisors, authors, influencers seem to give up writing about anyone over 70. The 70-year-old is downgraded to the unpalatable words “70 and beyond”.

The “...and beyond” bit I find quite offensive.

It is as if anyone over 70 is not worthy of a full sentence, just a throw-away line “...and beyond”.

The only thing upsetting about turning 70 for me

was the complete and utter lack of recognition, let alone celebration.

But I did expect some sort of acknowledgement from my family – namely the husband.

For my 60th birthday he had a white stretch limo waiting at my front gate concealing my daughter and son he’d flown from interstate for the big day.

We were all whisked off in celebrity-champagne -in-a-limo-style to an expensive restaurant where we ate and drank and loved each other.

So on the morning of the 70th, when the husband woke and said a quiet: “Happy birthday" and I said, “well, is the limo at the front gate?” you can only guess at my disbelief when he said: "No, I haven’t planned anything.”

No card, flowers, champagne. NOTHING. In a perverse way this has turned out to be a good thing.

My 70th birthday just slipped right under the radar. Until now. Now I have announced it proudly to you. Keep it to yourself. ann.rickard@apn. com.au

The final attraction was the magnificent Maleny Botanic Gardens. Nestled in a corner of the mountains, the gardens contain a wonderful collection of native and imported plants. The landscaping takes full advantage of the borrowed landscape beyond the boundaries of the gardens to provide magnificent views featuring the Glasshouse Mountains. Within the gardens is a large aviary where Australian and exotic birds fly freely among the visitors as the staff provide informative tours of the aviary.

■ Appeal for Gardening Tools An appeal for unwanted gardening tools and related equipment is being organised by Householders’ Options to Protect the Environment (HOPE).

Mr Frank Ondrus, President of HOPE said “we have offered to help a regional welfare agency collect sufficient garden and lawn-care tools and equipment for up to 10 low-cost accommodation houses which they manage.”

■ Annual Brisbane Model Train Show The Annual Brisbane Model Train Show is on again on Saturday and Sunday, May 7 and 8 at the Marque, Brisbane Showgrounds. Why do older men get grumpy?

GOOD MEDICINE Dr MICHAEL GILLMAN AS men become older, we are often accused of going through a male menopause. Some of us become tired, irritable, lacking in motivation and have declining sex drives.

This is where the term “grumpy old men” comes from.

So do males go through menopause like our female counterparts do and should all grumpy old men be taking testosterone replacement therapy?

The medical term for low testosterone is hypogonadism and it is present in around 5 per one hundred men. To make a diagnosis of male hypogonadism we need all three of the following criteria.

Firstly, there must be an unequivocally low level of testosterone in two early morning blood tests.

There must be signs of

low testosterone such as lack of facial and body hair, loss of muscle mass, weak bones such as osteoporosis, amongst other signs.

Finally, there must be symptoms such as tiredness, lethargy, low sex drive and difficulty concentrating.

There are many other causes of this group of symptoms such as sleep apnoea, early depression, anaemia and other hormone disorders.

If the testosterone is found to be low on a blood test, then the next step is to work out why it is low. It could be that the testicles have failed and are no longer producing the hormone, a situation which is similar to a female undergoing menopause with declining ovarian function.

It could be that the hypothalamus or the pituitary gland is not signalling the testes appropriately. It could be that a condition such as sleep apnoea is interfering with the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. It may be

that the man has increased fat around the abdomen which converts his testosterone to oestrogen resulting in breast enlargement.

Testosterone therapy is used when the testicles have failed and are no longer producing sufficient amounts of the hormone.

This diagnosis is made by interpreting the hormone tests and possibly getting an ultrasound done of the testes.

If this is not the cause, then testosterone therapy should not be used as giving the hormone will ultimately shut down the testicular production without treating the cause of the problem.

So if you’re a “grumpy old man”, go and see your doctor and arrange for some testing to find out why you feel this way.

Avoid taking testosterone or testosterone boosters unless the testicles have failed.

ASSOCIATION of Independent Retirees federal budget recommendation: Recommendation 1: that in view of the severe reduction in the income of self-funded retirees the age related compulsory drawdown/retirement income percentage be halved as it was on similarly difficult occasions in the past for retirees.

Recommendation 2: that the Government moderates the compulsory drawdown percentage of retirees retirement capital to take account of their increasing longevity so that they can continue to live comfortably in their latter years without the fear of the premature exhaustion of their retirement savings.

Recommendation 3: that the sale of productive assets to be transferred into the tax-free income stream product should be

exempt from capital gains tax for those who have been self-employed and/or those who did not have superannuation available to them, and wish to commence a superannuation fund to access a tax-free income stream product.

Recommendation 4: that the rebate reducing CPI indexation of Health Insurance rebates that was introduced in 2013 be immediately scrapped and the % rebates for senior Australians be reintroduced in full.

Recommendation 5: that the 2016/17 Budget must address the gaps and dysfunction in our $140 billion a year health arrangements to maintain the long-term viability of the health care system, and to ensure adequate, equitable health care for all Australians.

Recommendation 6: that the PBS Safety Net threshold for single retirees be set at 65% of

the couples/families threshold level or at the same % difference between the threshold income limit to receive the age pension for a single person and a couple.

Recommendation 7: That the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card for single retirees be set at % difference between the threshold income limit to receive the age pension for a single person and a couple.

Recommendation 8: That the Government will not extend the incorporation of either the assets or income of superannuants, any further than recent changes to incorporate indexation of the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card, in any changes to eligibility criteria for retirees benefits.

Secret Mykonos taverna Treat yourself to a Greek dining experience that will rival all others

WHAT are the chances?

You discover a tiny taverna on a Greek Island, so hidden it is invisible.

It has no telephone, no electricity, no signage, a no reservations policy.

You have to know someone who knows someone who knows someone else and is willing to tell you all about it.

It is in a remote section of Mykonos, on a desolate hill amid a brown denuded landscape, blocked from sight beneath the bushy umbrella branches of a large tree.

Three of us were determined to experience it after learning of its rustic charm in hushed whispers on a busy beach on the island.

“It’s very small. It opens only for lunch.

They cook enormous pork chops and delicious sword fish and giant baked potatoes on an open fire and the views over the sea are

wonderful but you might have to wait to get in, and if the food runs out, that’s it, they close.”

Such pressure.

But we were unwavering. We found it.

A queue had formed outside. Opening time was 1pm and not a second before.

When the clock struck one, the owner, a large handsome man looked over the top of a wall at the long line of desperate hopefuls outside, pointed at those he deemed first in line and said: “You, you, you and you.”

We were in. And smug.

The small bare tables, the inspiring simplicity of the mouth-watering food, the smell of the open grill fire, the glittering sea views, the haughty discern of the owner, and the strict policy that the baked potato came only with the pork, never with the swordfish, all made for such a vivid experience, I returned to Australia and wrote about it.

I referred cheekily to the wonderful owner as The Potato Nazi. He had

refused to give our friend with the swordfish a potato despite our pleading and offers of extra payment.

“No potato with the fish,” he said firmly and there was no question of negotiation.

We had loved it very much and despite the tongue-in-cheek reference to The Potato Nazi, I wrote fondly of it.

In my wildest dreams I could not have imagined someone from regional

Queensland would cut out the article, take it all the way to the remote

part of Mykonos, find the hidden taverna and brandish my story in front of The Potato Nazi.

Really? What were the chances?

He was not pleased when we returned the following year for another magical experience.

With a livid face, he pointed at me. “You,” he thundered, “I don’t let you in.”

Fortunately, after my pleas that the story really had been flattering in its mischief, he conceded and let us in where he produced my small story from a scrapbook and reluctantly said his wife thought I had described him perfectly.

We have returned to the taverna every year

for a decade now on an annual pilgrimage because it is, quite simply, the most glorious Greek Island food experience.

Other writers before and after me have written about this marvellous place - there was even a story in the New York Times, much to our owner’s feigned horror.

The Potato Nazi has a soft heart. His taverna is small and despite the fish/potato policy, he loves to please everyone. and is uncomfortable about the queues.

He even passes free wine in small pink aluminium containers over the wall to the people waiting outside.

I’m not going to tell you the name of the taverna in case you print this out and take it to him.

I really like my annual pilgrimage.

Two islands of Thailand Koh Samui’s twin sister island Koh Phangan is spectacular Phil Hawkes

IT SEEMS everybody’s heard of Koh Samui. It’s a well-known tourist magnet in the Gulf of Thailand, right?

An island with great beaches, food, markets, hotels and resorts? Yes, that’s all true.

But there’s a twin sister island not far from Samui.

Too far to swim, unless you’re an experienced channel swimmer, but just a short ferry ride away. It’s called Koh Phangan (pronounced Ko Par Narn).

And it’s spectacular.

I discovered Phangan about 30 years ago. There was little development then. Backpacker lodges all around the island, some on quite remote beaches, reachable only by longtail boat. We now find ourselves at the stunning Santhiya Resort, a 30-minute ride from the ferry port on the other side of the island, but well worth the bumps.

Perhaps the most defining feature of Santhiya is the extraordinary attention to detail in the villas as well as the public areas. The owners have their own wood carving and furniture factory, evident in small decorative touches such as individual lampshades, screens and even

The outdoor shower and bath in most villas is fun to use in this tropical climate. The resort is particularly conscious of environmental sustainability, and includes extensive use of recycled timber (although one guest complained that a wooden railway sleeper was “too old”)! of herbal products, minimum use of plastic, and segmented waste disposal.

Santhiya has two dining areas: the main Chantara restaurant with quality Thai and international cuisine; and By the Sea at beach and main pool level, with a bar and more informal menu. This resort makes a trip to Koh Phangan worthwhile.

Back in Koh Samui for a few days, we’ve arrived at sister property Bo Phut Resort. Another member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, it’s located on Bo Phut Beach just a short walk from the popular Night Market. If there’s one thing you should experience in Samui apart from all the outdoor sports activities and shopping, this is it.

Bo Phut Resort itself is a haven of tranquillity away from the noisier parts of Samui. Presented biennially, Out of the Box has been curated by QPAC for 24 years. It is the only arts festival in Australia dedicated to children eight years and under and one of only a few in the world.

It’s also the nation’s largest early childhood arts festival with more than 103,000 participants in the 2014 festival.

The 2016 Festival crosses over the end of the school term and into the June school holidays and provides a rich arts-based program including performances, workshops, free events and symposiums.

Out of the Box will take place within all of QPAC’s theatres and spaces and across the Cultural Precinct and South Bank in collaboration with Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, Queensland Museum, State Library of Queensland and South Bank.

This year the Festival is aiming to recruit 400 volunteers and is calling on south-east Queensland residents to volunteer.

Out of the Box Festival director Brett Howe said that the delivery of the eight-day Festival would not be achievable without the enthusiasm of

volunteers, many who we have seen return year after year.

“The success of this iconic event would not be possible without the dedication and hard work of volunteers who carry out vital roles in creating unique experiences for thousands of Queensland children.

“We are seeking motivated individuals who are passionate about the arts and enjoy working with children. We need approximately 50 volunteers for each day of the Festival with at least 400 in total,” said Mr Howe.

Volunteers will be assigned diverse roles including information booth attendants, school buddies, rovers and guides, catering assistants, workshop helpers and administration assistants.

Maria, still glamorous Ann Rickard talks to one of her favourite role models, a sassy woman who is ageing far better than a bottle of rare wine.

Rice flakes, power naps, false eyelashes, sorbolene moisturiser.

What could this mixed bunch possibly have in common?

They are all included in Maria Venuti’s daily routine and they keep her fired with energy and looking show-biz glamorous even though she has just passed her 75th birthday.

“Just write 75 once, darling,” Maria said during our fun interview. “No need to mention it again after that.”

So we won’t.

But sensible eating, lots of power naps, big fake eyelashes and the twice-daily slathering of moisturiser on face and décolletage keep Maria Venuti ready for the spotlight at any time of the day.

“Darling, I can’t go past a beauty shop, especially when they have a 50 per cent off sale,” she laughed. “I’ve just bought five more sets of eyelashes, lots of turquoise and gold eye shadow and more lipsticks.”

In an entertainment career that has spanned 58 jam-packed years and seen Maria perform on stage both nationally and internationally, as well as star in a number of movies, she still has what it takes to steal the limelight.

The Sicilian born beauty with the bountiful cleavage made her first singing performance at age 17, four years after she found the joy of make-up, false eyelashes and big hair. She has never stopped performing or wearing make-up since.

Maria not only whips her audiences up to good times with enduring cabaret songs belted out in her unique sexy style, she makes them laugh and feel marvellous.

“People are always coming up to me and thanking me for making them smile,” she said. “I love that. I get great adrenaline out of seeing people happy and smiling and saying ‘she’s just a bit crazy’. I like to create happiness.”

That she does, never caring if it involves making fun of herself.

At a performance in Noosa in a marquee on

top of a hill, she arrived wearing flat shoes instead of her signature heels so she could carefully contemplate the rocky terrain leading to the marquee.

As she stumbled over rocks towards the marquee she looked up to find her entire audience in the open-sided marquee watching her.

“Daaaaaarling, I had to go into the marquee and change into my heels in front of everyone,” she said. “But it made everyone laugh and I loved that.”

Becoming braver and less self-conscious is a benefit of ageing Maria now enjoys and wishes the same for all other seniors.

“You tend not to worry about how you look from a certain angle or if you bum looks big,” she said. “You think ‘I am what I am’ and that is how I feel now. I think everyone should look hard in the mirror and find their own uniqueness and build on that.

Everyone has something special.”

Never holding back when it comes to over-the-top outfits, always those that show off her trade-mark generous bosom, has endeared Maria to thousands of people over the years.

“I am lucky in that I have that olive oil Sicilian skin so my décolletage hasn’t wrinkled yet,” she laughed. “I moisturise it twice a day. I do alternate between using expensive products and $6 stuff from the supermarket.

“Darling, I can’t go past a beauty shop, especially when they have a 50 per cent off sale.” necklines. If I wear anything too high I feel claustrophobic. I have to let my girls out. It’s like taking a deep breath. It elevates me.”

Sequins, feathers and way too much bling are as essential to Maria as oxygen.

“I will wear black sequin pants and a sequin top out to lunch and diamante earrings in the day time,” she said. “I like to keep it interesting, flamboyant but not garish...although I don’t mind a bit of garish.”

With non-stop invitations to perform, speak, consult or endorse, Maria never stops working.

“I go hell for leather but I realise now I should take

a step back, slow down...but just a little bit.

“My secret to keeping going is to take a little nap whenever I can wherever I am.”

Maria is fortunate in that she can nod off for a few minutes in the back of a taxi which enables her to go from a celebrity breakfast on to a charity lunch and then a gala dinner in one hit.

But she says for those who can’t just pop off to sleep for a few minutes,

closing the eyes and thinking of something calm and peaceful is almost as good.

“Think of waves coming into the beach or something beautiful like that for a few minutes and it will re-energise you,” she said.

Maria needs every ounce of her impressive energy to keep up with her work load and the many charities she supports, including the Jeanne Little Alzheimer’s Fund, to support her close friend and role model, Jeanne Little, another zany lady now lost to the darkness of dementia.

“Jeanne and I are great

friends,” Maria said. “We used to sing and perform together. I visit her often.”

Maria’s list of celerity friendsis as big as her hair and she maintains contact with all of them.

To celebrate her special birthday recently her daughter Bianca organised a celebrity birthday attended by some of the country’s biggest A-listers.

As for retirement?

It’s a dirty word to Maria. “I will never retire,” she said. “There is a line in the song The Party’s Over. It goes...‘take off your make-up, the party’s over, it’s all over my friend.’
