Computers have been on our minds for centuries THE word “computer” was first recorded as being used in 1613 and was originally used to describe a human who performed calculations or computations. The definition of a computer remained the same until the end of the 19th century, when the industrial revolution gave rise to machines whose primary purpose was calculating. First mechanical computer or automatic computing engine concept In 1822, Charles Babbage conceptualised and began developing the Difference Engine, considered to be the first automatic computing machine. The Difference Engine was capable of computing several sets of numbers and making hard copies of the results. Babbage received some help with development of the Difference Engine from Ada Lovelace, considered by many to be the first computer programmer for her work and notes on the Difference Engine. Unfortunately, because of funding, Babbage was never able to complete a fullscale functional version of this machine. In June 1991, the London Science Museum completed the Difference Engine No.2 for the bicentennial year of Babbage’s birth and later completed the printing mechanism in 2000. In 1837, Charles Babbage proposed the first general mechanical computer, the Analytical Engine. www.seniorsnewspaper.com.au

Jessica, 93, hits the gym at 6am By MICHELE STERNBERG

JESSICA Benton loves nothing more than working up a sweat in the gym pumping iron three times a week and going for a walk or swim on her “days off”. At 93, she’s the oldest in the gym at Noosa Springs Golf and Spa Resort – but that doesn’t bother her. “It keeps me going,” she laughs, wiping a hand across her forehead as she jumps off the leg press machine. “The younger ones say they’re ashamed not to come because they know I’ll be here.” The active grandmother from Tasmania spends 10 weeks every year in Queensland visiting her daughter Patsy Fisher, who

conducts weekly classes in the fitness centre at Noosa Springs Resort. Mrs Benton, who turns 94 in November, says she rises at 4.30am every day and is at the gym by 6am whether she’s at home or on holidays.

Mrs Benton, believes regular exercise is the key to staying healthy and hopes to still be going whe she is 120. “You’ve got to keep going.

I push myself,” she said. She believes regular exercise is the key to staying healthy, and she hopes to still be going to the gym when she’s 120. “It’s helping my muscles, which is helping my bones to be strong,” she said. “My balance is not so good anymore, though. “I used to do the balance and pump class and step classes, but it’s a bit too much for me now, so I got into weights. I start off with 10 minutes on the treadmill and then go on to weights.” Mrs Benton asks those working out around her to help her put the weights on the machines, but has no leg press. Her dedication impresses all around her, and she’s even been asked to conduct

classes “for the oldies”. But for the moment, she’s happy working to her own training schedule. She’s always been a hard

worker. She started working at the age of 10 delivering papers on foot. “I was always a bit sickly as a child, but after 10, I just

took off ... I’ve been doing gym work and walking groups for years.” But for rest she loves curling up with her Kindle.

VITAL SKILLS: Forty seniors took a Grey Medallion lifesaving course at BreakFree Grand Pacific Caloundra.

Learning to save lives the Council on the Ageing funded us to run this course,” said Patricia Barry, the main facilitator. “It’s one that’s specially designed for over-55s. “They’re an over-represented demographic in the National Drowning Statistics. Many are also carers for their grandchildren. “Aquatic activities and pools form part of the daily lives of the growing num-

The Pets for Life program has proved a great success

Centre community development co-ordinator Tomas Passeggi said the project had provided help to 68 participants in the past three years. The project’s three-year funding grant from the Department of Health and Ageing expired and Mr Passeggi was unable to secure more funding. Mr Passeggi said they had had to pay for volunteer training, police checks and insurance out of their own pocket.

“We have had to create waitlists for people interested in joining us because unless there happens to be a volunteer in your area, we are not able to advertise for one,” he said. “The interest is still there, but this is not sustainable (without government assistance) in the long term. “With funding, when we have people with higher needs we were able to provide a program worker to follow up with them and provide more support, but

at the moment we can only provide the volunteers for the connection and have to refer them on to other services for anything beyond that.” Mr McArdle said he and his wife had owned a cat for more than 18 years and he was a firm believer in the benefits of pet ownership on the health and well-being of older generations. “The enjoyment we got out of her being around the home, I can only imagine there would be a manyfold increase to a person who is older and not as well,” he said. “The pure and unconditional love they provide is marvellous and for an elderly or isolated person it would be priceless.” Mr McArdle said the Pets for Life project was “well and truly advanced” with its success backed by research from the University of the Sunshine Coast. “I’m hoping the Minister can visit the community centre and meet some of the people in the area who rely upon pets for company and to relieve isolation,” he said.

THERE was no Christmas in July when funding for Pets for Life project expired in June. But that doesn’t meant Christmas isn’t coming, with Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle getting behind the cause. The campaign to secure more funding for the successful project has been boosted since Mr McArdle recently wrote to the Minister for Seniors Coralee O’Rourke in the hope of setting up a meeting to discuss the benefits of Pets for Life. The program started eight years ago as a partnership between the Caloundra Community Centre and the then Sippy Creek Animal Refuge as a means of preventing traumatic pet surrenders for seniors. But it has evolved into much more than that. Volunteers who came to care for the animals of program participants also kept track of their health and well-being and reported any concerns to a project manager for further attention. AS A young journalist at the Canberra Times, Judy Barrass was writing stories on a manual typewriter. These days, she’s leaning computer coding and is off to a robotics class. Judy is not a computer nerd – she is a creative artist using technology to expand the frontiers of her art and her mind. In her Sunshine Coast studio, the 68-year-old connects to the world of ideas and shares her own creativity around the planet. Judy sees no start or finish to her exploration into the far realms of technology. “I was an early adopter of anything and everything,” she said. The manual typewriter she once used eventually morphed into the much lauded Commodore 32 followed by Commodore 64. Before too long, Judy and her husband Jim were giving adult computer classes in the 70s. “I’ve always been a tech buff – I remember when I first received a hand-held calculator – it was exciting.” In 2006, Judy entered the virtual world and set up an avatar. In the virtual world, she was able to pursue her passion for creative construction and was delighted it didn’t take up any physical area. Among other things, in virtual reality she set up a garden centre and sold her landscaping creations – waterfalls, rivers, plants. “For a while it was quite lucrative,” she said. “The freedom to be and do in the virtual world is what its all about. “If you want to set up an art gallery you can, if you want to change the show it’s no problem. “You can live wherever you

TECH TEACHER: Carmel Galvin with her iPad.

In Noosa the average age is 60 upwards and Carmel says there is an even mix of men and women. “It’s mostly instruction on tablets, learning how to Skype, manipulating the buttons, understanding the symbols, how to attach a photo or send a message,” she said. “One day I was even asked, ‘How do I answer the phone? When I ring somebody and the other person answers, what do I do?’” In Mooloolaba, smart phone instructor Colin Dunkerley – The iPad Man, says business has increased so much he is currently advertising for three, maybe four, new trainers. He has been covering the Sunshine Coast since 2012 – from Bribie Island to Noosa and taking in Male-

ny and Beerwah. “Right now I don’t need any advertising, word of mouth is so strong,” he said. “I can’t grow any more unless I employ more trained operators and I’m advertising now.” One day a week Colin gives group lessons to two lots of 16 people and on the other days holds three or four individual lessons a day. He has found that seniors are afraid of doing something wrong. “They need confidence. They think they will do something that breaks the device or stop it from working,” he said. As well as needing more trainers, Colin said he was launching a nationwide online video course next month.

It’s done, kaput, as yesteryear as the analog tv signal, typewriters and 35mm Kodak film. It’s no longer funny. You know, the joke about how Nanna had to be shown by her eight-year-old grandson how to use her smart phone. The Coast is experiencing an explosion of seniors flocking to local libraries or hiring private trainers to learn how to be tech savvy in today’s digital age of iPads, Androids, Apps, eBay, eBooks, Facebook and more. SENIORS readers may remember that great ad that sparked a worldwide flurry of piano players, “They laughed when I sat down at the piano… and then I started to play.” Well, today the Sunshine Coast equivalent is, “They laughed when I picked up my iPhone… and then I started to text.” A Sunshine Coast Council representative told SENIORS its eight libraries provided one-on-one sessions with volunteers. “In the last 12 months we have hosted 726 free technology help sessions and more than 2000 people have attended,” the representative said. “We estimate 90 per cent of participants are over 50.” At Noosa Library more than 1000 seniors have taken part in courses since the library’s “Tech Help” started in March 2013. Former Sydney teacher-librarian Carmel Galvin has been there from the outset. She is a volunteer and she says, “The more I do, the more I realise the need. The demand is huge.”

What’s mine is mine LETTERS S TO THE EDITOR

I REMAIN appalled by people, be they family or friends, who think they have an entitlement to other people’s money. A bequest is choice and gift of the deceased person. No one else owns another’s possessions except the owner. No one should have any say at all as to what they feel they are “entitled to”. The mindset that people have a right to a secured

allotment of money is in the days of yore and has been for a very long time. My children know full well that when I retire I am going to live life to the full and they will get what is leftover. Neither of my children are wealthy but they know what I own is mine to do with in whatever form I wish. The mindset is all based on greed.

Working longer AUSTRALIANS are leading longer, healthier lives and are being urged by economists and politicians to work longer. While many of us are keen to do so, others feel that after a lifetime of hard work they are entitled to an easier life. If you’re not ready for retirement just yet, you might be thinking about your options. You might be considering starting your own business, retraining for a new career or simply up-

skilling for your current one. You may even be looking for a new job or trying to rejoin the workforce. While older job seekers in Australia are known to face the most trouble when it comes to finding work, that doesn’t mean you should be discouraged. Age discrimination in employment has been acknowledged as a significant issue for many decades and Australia has been active in legislating to compensate

those who are victims of age discrimination. National Seniors Australia continues to lead research into age discrimination and the retention of older workers in the Australian workforce, as well as fight for better conditions for mature age workers. Check out the articles at the website below for the latest research and useful information on work and careers – www.nationalseniors.com.au/be-informed/ work-and-careers.

Facing unfair treatment because of their age STEREOTYPES about young people and older Australians are a major factor behind age discrimination. This is especially true for mature workers, who often have to counter negative attitudes held by employers and assumptions about a ‘use by’ date for their skills. The Age Discrimination Act 2004 protects individuals across Australia from discrimination on the basis of age in many areas of public life, including employment, education, accom-

modation and the provision of goods and services. People who experience direct or indirect discrimination can complain to the Commission. The Commissioner undertakes a wide range of activities to help individuals and organisations around the country understand their rights and meet their legal responsibilities, especially in the workplace. The work includes research, policy advice and education initiatives that

work. Her focus is addressing the barriers to equality and participation faced by mature workers, older Australians and young people.

Measures are needed to break down age discrimination IN March this year, the release of the Intergenerational Report today confirmed the government's continued intention to cut the age pension, highlights the need for more focus on combatting age discrimination and having a more dynamic workforce participa-

tion policy, and reaffirms the need for a comprehensive retirement incomes review, said leading seniors advocate COTA Australia. COTA Australia Chief Executive Ian Yates said population and demographic changes heralded ‘the age of the senior' which should

be celebrated. "The ageing population means we are going to be forced to better value older people in our society as we will need to rely on them to balance future budgets. A productive future of Australia will need to be a productive older Australia," Mr Yates

said."If we need older Australians to work longer, there will need to be more sophisticated measures and incentives put in place to break down discrimination against older people and encourage employers to keep them on. - COTA Australia.

AGE AND DISABILITY DISCRIMINATION COMMISSIONER The Hon Susan Ryan AO (pictured) was appointed as Australia’s first Age Discrimination Commissioner on July 30, 2011 for a five year term. Susan Ryan is also the Disability Discrimination Commissioner, from 12 July 2014. Up until her appointment as Commissioner, she had been Women’s Ambassador for ActionAid Australia and chaired the Australian Human Rights Group since 2008. She had also chaired the Australian Human Rights Act Campaign Inc. since 2005. Immediately prior to commencing as Commissioner, Susan was also the Independent Chair of the IAG and NRMA Superannuation Plan and had been President of the Australian Institute of Superannuation Trustees from 2000 to 2007, member of the Australian Council of Superannuation Investors from 2001 to 2007, member of the ASX Corporate Governance Council from 2003 to 2007

and CEO of the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia from 1993 to 1997. Susan has also held a number of positions at the University of New South Wales. She was Pro-chancellor and Council member from 1998, Chair of the UNSW Risk Committee from 2002 and Chair of the Advisory Council FASS UNSW since 2010. From 1975 to 1988, Susan was Senator for the ACT, becoming the first woman to hold a Cabinet post in a federal Labor Government. She also pioneered extensive anti-discrimination and equal opportunity legislation, including the landmark Sex Discrimination Act 1984 and the Affirmative Action Act 1986. In 1990, Susan was appointed Officer of the Order of Australia for her contribution to Parliament. She published her autobiography, Catching the Waves, in 1999 and has been a frequent media commentator on her areas of expertise.

New books commemorate those who served in WWII

SEVENTY-SIX years ago, then Australian Prime Minister Robert Gordon Menzies announced the beginning of Australia’s involvement in the Second World War. U3A computer classes are a popular choice By JENNIFER GRAHAM

MORE older Australians are embracing technology, a trend reflected in the growing popularity of U3A’s computer courses. On a recent afternoon I had the pleasure of sitting in on an android tablet class conducted by Mr Jeff Martens in Toowoomba. When I asked the students their reasons for signing up for the course, the list of answers was varied, ranging from keeping up with their grandchildren, curiosity, the desire to learn something new and wanting to make the most of their devices. Another strong push factor was acknowledging that with so many services and resources now going online, it was either keep up or get left behind. When summing up his students’ motivations, Mr Martens said some students feel guilty they are be-

Laguna Estate - a lifestyle choice

Is ‘grandma’s ghetto’ your idea of a retirement village? If so, stop right there! There is nothing further from the truth. In the past, most residents entered these villages aged in their seventies as part of a move to downsize, decrease maintenance responsibilities, experience a greater sense of safety and security, or for health and lifestyle reasons. Today, younger retirees from age 55 are seeing the benefits of relocating to a retirement village, with the emphasis on lifestyle and making the move a liberating experience. To those who say that they are not ready for such a move, many of the residents at Laguna Estate say that they wish they had made the decision earlier. It has given them the freedom to travel, visit family or just pursue new hobbies without any of the worries they previously had with the upkeep and security issues of their previous home. Combining outstanding resort facilities with stylish homes in a fully landscaped environment, this village strikes the perfect balance between privacy and independence whilst encouraging a vibrant and rewarding community in which to live. There are spacious villas and serviced apartments from which

to choose, all in a quiet, peaceful location yet so close to all the vibrant action of Noosa. The range of facilities is cleverly geared towards anyone over the age of 55, whether you are physically active or prefer a quieter lifestyle - and the grandchildren are welcome here. so what will sell you on your decision to make Laguna Estate your home? It is a combination of many things – particularly the smart community facilities and the activities which cater for all lifestyles, but also the quality finish of both the new and the refurbished villas, the resortstyle feel, the professional and hugely cheerful staff and the low monthly fees. At some time in the future you may need living assistance but this too is catered for at Laguna Estate with assisted care apartments available. Three meals a day, cleaning, weekly towel & linen changes and 24 hour on-call emergency staff are all part of the service. Laguna Estate is a class act – phone 1800 012 049 for lots more information and an appointment to view this special retirement estate at 21 Lake Weyba Drive, Noosaville. You could soon be making the best choice of your life! 6047017aa

Genealogy Club’s tribute to community of brave people AND their Names Shall Live Forever, Book 1 – Woombye – a book researched by members of the Sunshine Genealogy Club, Nambour. War was not a lifestyle choice for most people. It happened upon them and they followed the call. Volunteering for service was keen and the number of applications for naturalization abnormally increased, showing the willingness of the migrant population to fight for the freedom of their newly accepted country. In 1914 Recruiting Stations were set up in Woombye and Nambour appeared in newspapers and with little concept of war, young men in the district joined up to take their places in the ranks of the Allied fighting forces. Woombye became a Military Centre – a place for training, registration and inspection.

attended by all, remembering that not only had “right” prevailed over “might”, but a great price had been paid to achieve peace in the form of many, many young people from Woombye and districts who would never return home. This book, the first in a series, is an endeavour to give a memory and dignity to those who lost their lives through war, and to those who fought a good fight and returned home to raise families, rebuild lives, help others and support those less fortunate. It is a tribute to a community of brave people.

Help with a furry coat for an injured animal SNUGGLE Coats wants your old fur coats, stoles, capes and hats to give to animal groups to rehabilitate and enrich the lives of animals in care. Furs provide a more natural environment for the animals as compared to towels or blankets, and they are often heard heaving audible sighs before snuggling

into these fur donations. These furs can act as a surrogate for injured wildlife during the rehabilitation process. We all know there is nothing sexy or beautiful about wearing a second-hand fur – so now it’s time to give them back to the animals. The condition of the fur contribution is unimpor-

Festival blooms again CELEBRATE the many colours and joys of spring at the Buderim Garden Festival. Buderim Garden Club has drawn crowds to this event for more than 60 years. This year it will be held on the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, October 17–18. It will run from 9am–4pm at the Buderim Memorial

Six of Buderim’s best private gardens will also be on display. These gardens have been especially chosen for their

outstanding qualities, and are open all weekend from 9am–4pm. Visitors without a car can hop on a mini bus to move between the gardens. A list of various classes is on line at buderimgardenclub.com. Entry will be $15 for a festival ticket or $2 for entry into the hall only and free access to the adjacent plant

DID you know it’s only a couple of months to Christmas? And in all the expense of preparing for that most expensive of seasons, even necessary chores get shelved until you can afford them. But with family coming to stay, you really want your home to look its best and if the carpet is looking tired and grubby, that’s not going to happen. The smart solution is to phone Family Friendly Carpet Cleaning before the Christmas crunch starts. As their name suggests, they’re just like part of the family, they’re friendly, and they can make your carpets fresh again. They’re available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, anywhere on the Sunshine Coast, which means if an emergency crops up, they’re right there with the solution. For everyday jobs, they appreciate having Anzac Day and Christmas Day to spend with loved ones. Other services are uphol-

stery and leather cleaning and pest control. Donna from Family Friendly Carpet Cleaning claims, “Our title says it all. We treat everyone just as we would our own family. As a result, in the two years we’ve been in operation, we’ve struck up many friendships with our customers – Sunshine Coast people are lovely that way. They appreciate our attitude and most of our business comes from word of mouth from satisfied clients.” Family Friendly Carpet Cleaning uses only the sort of cleansers they would want their own family exposed to – so no harmful toxins or chemicals! “We respect our clients and are happy to give them tips to improve the life of their carpets and upholstery,” Donna said. So, to spruce up your home before Christmas or anytime it’s necessary. Phone Donna at Friendly Carpet Cleaning on 1300 879 175.

ALWAYS feeling tired? Crave a daily nap? Find it difficult to concentrate? You could be suffering from OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea). How serious is sleep apnea? If you’ve ever slept next to someone who snores you will know just how irritating it can be. However, a common side effect of sleep apnea is excessive snoring and this can be much more serious. When we are asleep, our airways relax and start to narrow causing snoring. In people with apnea, the airway can be closed over causing it to become blocked, which in turn starves the body of oxygen. the body isn’t breathing, it sends a shot of adrenalin to alert the body to wake up. We then take a deep breath (or loud snort) and go back to sleep. The cycle then repeats and can occur several hundred times a night. How do you know if you suffer from it? Some common signs are: ■ Excessive snoring, a choking sensation or waking with a loud snort. You appear to stop breathing. Frequent night visits to the bathroom. Continual lack of energy, poor concentration, short-term memory. Why is it important to do something about it? quantity. The reason most people with apnea are always tired is their body is still fatigued as a result of poor quality sleep. Health risks directly linked with apnoea include: ■ Type 2 Diabetes, heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure and dementia. How is it treated? The most effective treatment is with a CPAP or APAP machine, which delivers pressurised air through a tube and mask to your face. The airways are held open by the higher air pressure providing a much better quality, uninterrupted and restorative sleep. How will the treatment im-

Preventing falls is No.1 priority

FALLS prevention was essential for me rather than an option. Having suffered a debilitating stroke many years ago, I found my mobility deteriorated greatly once I retired. My lack of regular exercise and sedentary exercise lifestyle resulted in me having regular falls which resulted in several broken bones, lack of confidence and insecurity. I more often than not could not get up after a fall, which was really frightening. I was recommended to the falls clinic at Eden, which has made a drastic difference to my resilience. The six-week program was scheduled to alternate be-

tween exercise and theory so fatigue was not an issue. The group was small enough to ensure each participant received individualised attention to improve balance, awareness and general wellbeing. I learnt to be aware of my surroundings and environment and to identify possible hazards, the importance of nutrition, suitable footwear, and to pace myself and ensure suitable rest. The group was friendly and I met others with similar problems. The staff made it very pleasant and was committed to ensuring everybody had an improved quality of life. I have not experienced a

ARE you breast aware? October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS) is encouraging women to take this opportunity to look after their own breast health. Breast cancer remains the most common cancer affecting women in Queensland with one in eight women diagnosed by the age of 85. It is important for women of all ages to be breast aware. BreastScreen Queensland health promotion officer Kelly Hart said it was great that many people held events during October to raise awareness and much needed funds for breast cancer research. “These valued funds will go towards cancer research

and to support women as they progress through their treatment for breast cancer,” Ms Hart said. “However, how many will forget to look after their own breast health during October? “You should be familiar with the look and feel of your breasts. If you find you have a breast lump, a watery or bloodstained nipple discharge, or any breast changes that concern you, you should talk to your doctor as soon as possible.” The other important step that all women aged over 40 can take to keep on top of their breast health is to participate in a regular two yearly screening program. Ms Hart said breast cancer screening remained the most effective way to detect

breast cancer early. “Although screening doesn’t stop breast cancer developing, finding it early does give women the best possible chance of successful treatment and wellbeing,” she said. The program is a free service available to women aged 40 years and over, with women aged 50 to 74 years particularly encouraged to attend. No doctor’s referral is required. Early morning, late afternoon and Saturday appointments are available. Appointments are one-onone with a female health professional and BreastScreen Queensland uses the latest digital mammography technology. To arrange an appointment, phone BreastScreen Queensland on 13 20 50.

fall since the course, but have peace of mind as we were shown how to get up if we were to fall. Low-impact exercise to provide stability is essential and I am now able to walk far further than previously. It is fair to say my quality of life has improved dramatically. The importance of self-care is paramount throughout the course. Sessions included importance of vision with an optometrist attending. A Tai Chi Instructor also demonstrated the help of balance and relaxation from this ancient practice. For more information, phone Eden Rehabilitation on 07 5472 6472.

IF YOU are a retiree it is highly likely your eyes have been glued to the Australian stock market since April. From a high of about 5850 points in April the All Ordinaries index fell to a low of just above 5000 points at the end of August. This is a fall of about 14% and really puts a dent in the Australian share part of any investment portfolio. The fall has been of particular concern for the whole Self Managed Super Fund sector of the Australian in-

vestment market. Recent statistics reveal about 78% of the total SMSF funds in the nation are invested in either cash or term deposits, and Australian shares. This is viewed as a worrying concern because there is little diversification with just two asset classes involved for the majority. It is also relatively common to come across SMSFs being managed with exposure only to direct Australian share holdings, and more often than not the bulk of

these will be Australian banks, which are seen by most trustees as “blue chip stocks”. This will provide a great outcome in periods where the All Ordinaries Index marches forward at a great rate of knots, but not so good when there is a correction that takes away all the recent gains. The investment period we find ourselves in is a classic example of why a portfolio needs diversification – and in particular it needs this to work for the long term.

A club offering mobile service

SARA and Wendy from The 50+ Travel Club have been helping valued clients for over five years but together they have 30 years combined experience in the travel industry. “The success of our club has been that we take all the hard work out of planning a holiday,” Sara said. “If you want to book a cruise, a tour, car hire and airfares we can do the lot versus you having to call each travel operator individually, which can be hard to manage if you’ve got a few things booked. “We also have great offers that you won’t always find in your local travel agency or even booking directly with a travel operator.” What’s exciting is once you book your first holiday with them you become a life-time member. Your membership brings

with it genuine additions and savings, which include– exclusive savings only available through the club, invitations to special events, complimentary overnight accommodation before or after on selected tours, pre-release tours and cruises advice, discounts on travel insurance, 24 hours, seven-days-a-week help while you are away, discounted business class airfare options. The club offers a unique point of difference than other travel agencies, one of them being that their agency is mobile. A travel expert can meet with you in the comfort of your own home or at your favourite coffee shop, or they can organise everything over the phone and email. They are the preferred travel consultants for one of

Brisbane’s leading award winning retirement villages and meet with individuals as well as groups, which get together in their communal areas for fun and informative travel presentations. Not only do they work closely with some of the most popular and wellknown travel operators like Scenic and APT but they also source lesser known ones like Tauck and Insider Journeys plus many more. Whatever tour, cruise or self-guided itinerary you require their aim is to provide a superior experience from the time you make your initial enquiry, to boarding the plane or cruise, right through to your return home. Phone 1300 689 461 or by email on info@50plustravelclub.com.au or visit their website www.50plustravelclub.com.au.

Art meets environment as Floating Land rade, ready for the October long weekend. Major sculptural pieces include two temples in the water, a wooden stingray hovering over the lake, while Kris Martin’s Earth Being – a large sculpted head – makes a bold statement rising two-metres from the water’s surface.

Medicinal music – dance, dance, dance HOW do you put a smile on a senior’s face? Put a musical instrument in their hand and put them on a stage in front of an appreciative audience. Sunshine Coast Concert Band, under the baton of Ken Chadwick OAM (Old Age Musician), has been entertaining the Sunshine Coast for the last 18 years. A no longer “sprightly” but very active octogenarian,

Ken puts many hours into organising the concerts and dances for the band. Since the loss of his wife, Val, more than five years ago, Ken has gained solace from the friendship and support the band provides. “Our 40-plus members may have an average age of around 60 but mentally we’re much younger. Almost delinquent at times,” Ken said.

Theatre presents a thriller BATS Theatre Company at Buderim will present Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None, designed to thrill and treat the audience with an evening or afternoon of mystery and comedy. In 1939 Europe is teetering on the brink of war. Ten strangers are invited to Soldier Island, an isolated rock near the Devon coast. Cut off from the mainland, with the generous hosts Mr and Mrs U.N. Owen mysteriously absent, they are each accused of a terrible crime. When one of the party dies suddenly they realise they may be harbouring a murderer among their number. The 10 strangers include a reckless playboy, a trou-

bled Harley St doctor, a formidable judge, an uncouth detective, an unscrupulous mercenary, a highly decorated general and an anxious secretary. One by one they are picked off. Who will survive? And who is the killer? On the wall hangs the ominous nursery rhyme, the murders mimicking the awful fates of its Ten Little Solder Boys. On opening night, Friday October 2, the audience will have the chance to join in the fun, with the option of dressing in their favourite Agatha Christie-1940s outfit. The best dressed will be judged by Nancy and receive a $50 dinner voucher from the Coffee Club, Buderim.
