Let’s talk about health and wellbeing THIS edition profiles local people who have embraced exercise as an essential element of their wellbeing. On the subject of wellbeing, I have to say that I am rather tired of hearing about the latest “superfood” found in some remote village connected to an unknown Amazonian jungle. “Superfood” being the word used to describe a food that has miraculous qualities that in this order will – heal us, make us incredibly happy

It’s time to trial a new subsidised taxi route
COUNCIL has approved a seven-month trial of a subsidised cab service that will cost eligible people at just $2 a trip. The service is scheduled to start in December. The scheme will provide a pre-booked, door-to-door service from an eligible person’s home to a Toowoomba shopping centre or to a designated bus stop in regional areas. Single trips will cost $2 per person and are available once a week. Eligible passengers will be picked up from a designated home address in a shared service. Cr Carol Taylor said each service area of the Council Cab catchment was assigned a designated day each week with set drop-off locations and operation times.

Gasoline-powered taxicabs began operating in Paris in 1899, in London in 1903, and in New York in 1907. The New York taxicabs were imported from France by Harry N. Allen who decided to paint his taxicabs yellow to maximise his vehicles’ visibility Taxicabs proliferated around the world in the early 20th century. The first major innovation after the invention of the taximeter occurred in the late 1940s, when two-way radios first appeared in taxicabs. Radios enabled taxicabs and dispatch offices to communicate and serve customers more efficiently than previous methods, such as using

BEFORE the invention of the car, the practice of vehicles for public hire was in place. In 1640 in Paris, Nicolas Sauvage offered horse-drawn carriages and drivers for hire. In 1635, the Hackney Carriage Act was the first legislation passed that controlled horse-drawn carriages for hire in England. Electric battery-powered taxis became available at the end of the 19th century. In London, Walter C. Bersey designed a fleet of such cabs and introduced them to the streets in 1897. Great memories debs, balls, halls MEMORIES flooded in for members of Garden City National Seniors when Ann Alcock and Nicki Laws spoke about their recent book Frocks, Deb Balls and Country Halls, at the October meeting. Research by the two authors took them to many parts of the North Eastern Downs photographing halls and reminiscing with past and present committee members. Numerous halls were simple corrugated iron structures but they were central to the social life of the Darling Downs for many years, and to some extent still are. The timber dance floors were remembered for the perfection of their con-
struction and upkeep that with the aid of “Pops” facilitated the smooth gliding of the dancers. Several ladies at the meeting had made their debut in a small country hall and a few of the men had partnered a deb. The weekly dance was part of life for many and the place where some met their life partner. At least one of our couples still attends regular country dances and catch up with old friends. Members recalled growing up in the area and listening to the music of Ronny and the Ramblers and others, great suppers and coffee made from fresh milk and coffee essence brewed in a kerosene tin over an open fire.
Garden City National Seniors will meet on Monday, November 16 at the Drayton Bowls Club, cnr Ball and Gipps St at 9.30am. It commences with morning tea and cost is $7. The morning will follow the developing tradition of having some of the members as guest speakers. This is proving to be popular and revealing. There will also be a short game to get everyone into the Christmas spirit. Bookings to be made to attend the Christmas party on Thursday, December 3 at Drayton Bowls Club. For further information about Garden City National Seniors phone Hazel on 4635 4519.

Story of a real basketball legend extensive involvement with coaching, refereeing and sports administration. In 1966, he became the first Queensland official to be awarded an Australian Referee badge and followed this up in 1972 by being awarded a FIBA badge (International Basketball Federation). Ron is a life member both the Toowoomba Basketball and Queensland Basketball Referee’s Associations and in 2000, was awarded an Australian Sports Medal by the Australian Government. Ron’s illustrious refereeing career has led him to the National Basketball League in which he was involved from its inception. Officiating at this level often meant appearing in

THE game of basketball has had a long history in Australia, with the first match being played in 1900. With participation in the sport continuing to grow, the game has embedded itself in our sporting landscape. But as much as player participation is important, there would be no sport if not for the dedicated services of coaches and officials supporting the game. In this capacity, Toowoomba boasts something of a legend in the form of Mr Ron Blades. Born in Warwick in 1940, Ron has many awards and achievements to his name, a result of his tireless and

was only ever 50% right! You have to totally close off your mind and your hearing and be deaf to what is happening and concentrate on the game … it is the knowledge of the rules that gives you confidence on court.” Although a knee injury ended his refereeing career last year, the sprightly seventy-four year old is still actively involved in many aspects of the game, including coaching a number of junior representative teams. Ron strongly believes that basketball equips kids with
an array of skills and knowledge applicable outside the sporting arena, including “learning to work in a team environment and life skills like learning how to win and learning how to lose”. Similarly, Ron’s own life has been shaped by his involvement with basketball, for it was through the sport that he met his lovely wife, Denise. No slouch in the basketball department herself, Denise is a former Toowoomba representative and has had considerable involvement with the sport over the years. Carrying on the tradition is son, David, who belonged to the pioneer batch of Townsville Suns players. From a seniors’ perspective, basketball offers quite a few options with the Toowoomba Basketball Association (TBA) boasting a number of registered players in their sixties.

Group walks, talks way to fitness
Con Foley and Shirley Fielder enjoying a break during a recent U3A Walking Group outing.
WHEN people talk of exercise and sport, very often they visualise hulking, great, sweating athletes involved in a highly competitive pursuit. While this is appealing to some, it is can be very off-putting to others – enough to make them shun exercise altogether.
Thankfully, there are gentler (and more sociable) fitness options available, including U3A’s popular Walking Group. Meeting every Thursday morning at 9am, the group completes a five-to-six kilometre walk in both country and city settings, with

community news Take off your shoes and bowl yourself some summertime fun and games By JENNIFER GRAHAM
IT was not that long ago that lawn bowls clubs across Australia were facing an uncertain future. Competing with an array of “trendier” recreation options, the game of bowls was perceived by many to be “old fashioned” and “stuffy”. The question then arose, what do we do to revitalise the sport? How do we attract new and younger
members? How can we get rid of the game’s negative image? Barefoot Bowls seemed to be the answer… As the name suggests, Barefoot Bowls offers a more relaxed, casual and informal approach to the game of lawn bowls. Winning certainly isn’t everything and “having a go” is the order of the day. As Toowoomba Bowls club member, Diane van Zeeland explains: “The

essence of playing bowls in teams and attempting to touch the jack or kitty remains the same (as traditional bowls), but there is less emphasis on etiquette and more on enjoyment of the physical activity and the food and drink associated with this format… It is becoming ‘the’ activity for groups to enjoy parties, corporate functions as well as birthday bashes, and is enjoyed by both sexes and all ages.” Would-be players are not required to wear uniforms, bare feet or flat shoes are permitted on the greens and the bowling club provides all equipment, an introduction to the rules and coaching, if required. Toowoomba Bowls Club has been offering Barefoot Bowling functions for the past five to six years with regular timeslots available on Friday and Saturday afternoons. For more information on Barefoot Bowls at Toowoomba Bowls Club, call 4632 3174.
True colours of bowling spirit By JENNIFER GRAHAM
WINDY conditions did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the group of ladies assembled on the green of the Toowoomba Bowls Club on a recent Friday. Taking their inspiration from the Toowoomba violet, the group cut stylish and vibrant figures in the purple and white hues of their playing uniforms. The competition was spirited, but still friendly, and the bowls were given substantial vocal encouragement to complete their respective journeys towards the sometimes elusive jack. Contrary to perceptions of all-white ensembles and hushed surrounds, lawn bowls is an interactive and vibrant pastime increasingly gathering players from a variety of age groups and backgrounds. The bowls themselves are testimony to the evolution of the game with custo-

mised colours and shades, complete with personalised motifs, replacing the somewhat dull brown and black models from times gone by. Offering a low-impact form of physical activity, lawn bowls also enhances coordination and fitness. Being an outdoors sport, there are plenty of opportunities to draw in some fresh air and the team na-
ture of bowls allows for frequent social interaction with others. Toowoomba Bowls Club in Lindsay Street is very seniors friendly, but also regularly reaches out to the wider Toowoomba community. According to Toowoomba Bowls Club member, Diane van Zeeland, “It is a great activity the whole family can enjoy.”

How about helping us find a new definition for ageing and get rid of stereotypes IN a sense, the letters below share one common link. Both writers desire to have their own wishes, their personal lifestyle and choices respected and not expressed in inappropriate language words. This generation has made huge leaps in identifying language, traditions and or institutions that have provoked discrimination. But there is plenty of work
to be done. As a Seniors’ newspaper, we seek to ensure that “ageist” language is not used. But sometimes, no matter how well intentioned, it happens. But never is it unacceptable. Language is a powerful
tool, it can be inspirational and devastating, it is through language that we make friends and enemies. Language is influential, what is said shapes our thoughts and colours our decision. Once a communication is made, it is there forever. Our response can be flexible and ever-changing, but the initial communication remains the same.
The demographic of the world is changing, there are not only more older people, it is a new generation of older people. This generation of post 50year-olds are redefining ageing, but euphemisms such baby boomer, the Senior, the elderly, the oldie remain and I believe it’s time for a change. It is important that we are represented as we are and
who we are. The stereotype of a frail, dependant, ageing person no longer applies. I believe in diversity of course the world is populated with many different age-groups. To live peacefully, respectful and mindful of others, we need sensitivity, thoughtful and intelligent words and a language able to represent these qualities. We cannot get bogged
down in “weasel words” but should stick to the truth. Be it in media or a Will, we need to mean what we say. Language is also bright, smart and evolving, do you have any ideas that would better describe our new post 50-year-old generation? Love to hear from you, Email: Editor@seniors newspaper.com.au
Please take care, stick to the facts, and don’t use us as ‘whipping posts’ I agree with the letter from Margaret Daly of Nundah concerning “Spending their inheritance” but would like to take the discussion a step further. I disagree strongly with the notion that a recipient (or non-recipient) of a Will, has any right to contest a legally prepared Last Will and Testament, and I don’t care if the contester is a spouse, ex-spouse, partner, lover, friend, child/grand-child, carer or whatever of the deceased party. This legal document is an expression from the deceased person’s last wishes and should be honoured and fully respected and the law should be fighting to uphold it.

Unfounded denigration
I DRAW to your attention that ABC NEWS 24, which I believe has been denigrating older Australians, who are allegedly responsible for the lack of housing
for younger Australians. Today, (November 2) the “subscript” at the foot of the ABC News 24 screen keeps repeating that: “Older homeowners keeping (sic) younger Australians from their backyard dream.” I see this semi-literate attack upon older Australians as a totally unfounded denigration of our generation. While there is no real proof that we are the villains for the pathetic national housing policies that are advocated by both sides of our political system. As a retired, self-funded Australian, who assists in volunteer pursuits and non-paid charity
work, I wonder why the ABC, one of our most respected institutions, seems to blame retirees for the apparent inadequacies in our national housing policies. We, the older retired Australians, do not make the policies relating to housing in this country. My much-loved ABC on the other hand, is free to influence public attitudes by turning younger Australians against us by casting aspersions upon the elderly. Perhaps, we are just easy “whipping posts”. The ABC is almost always the first off the blocks when defending minorities against discrimination. Yet when it comes to the older
generation, who are not prone to defend themselves, this group is free to be chastised for the faults that occur within our housing policies. Name withheld Shelly Beach

A Tweed Coast escape THE Tweed Valley lies across the remains of a huge volcano that last erupted some 20 million years ago spreading lava over 100 km in all directions from Byron Bay and Lismore in the south to Mount Tamborine in the north. After millennia of erosion by the Tweed River and its tributaries, all that is left is the old central magma plug
of Mt Warning and the remains of the outer walls forming a caldera or bowl shaped valley 1000metres deep. A tour group of National Seniors members and friends spent last week criss-crossing the valley and surrounds and enjoying the many tourist attractions of the area. On our way to the Tweed we skirted the northern

edge of the lava flow by travelling along the coast calling in at Sanctuary Cove, Southport and Broadbeach. The following morning we climbed onto the valley rim to get to Tropical Fruit World where their tractor train, miniature railway and boat took us through areas of rain forest and a plantation of over 500 weird and wonderful fruit
varieties from around the world. A highlight of our visit was the Australian Outback Spectacular High Country Legends Dinner and Show where the speed and precision of the horse riding in the arena was almost matched by the efficient serving of a threecourse meal with drinks while the show went on. On the way home we called in at the Gallery Walk on
Mount Tamborine before heading down off the last of the old lava flow to historic Jimboomba House for a delightful lunch. Coming up our bus trip on Thursday, November 19 will be a shopping expedition to Westfield Garden City, Mt Gravatt. Departs 7.30am. Cost is $35 including morning tea. Buy your own lunch. Book now for our Christ-
mas Party on Tuesday, December 1 commencing at 10.30am at Regents on the Lake. Music by the Timeless Duo of Patty Whitehouse and John Cosgrove; entertainment by All and Sundry; special guest Rev Penny Jones, St Luke’s; lucky door prizes and raffles. community news We all have a story to tell IT is always quite interesting to observe people’s reactions when I approach them to do a story. Upon hearing that I am from Seniors Newspaper there is often a moment’s hesitation related to either, “Surely I’m not old enough to be in Seniors, am I?” or alternatively, “Why would anyone want to read about me?” Perhaps denial partially explains the first of these reactions, but the second is a little more puzzling and poses the question, “Why wouldn’t somebody want to read about you?” I like to think that through our Seniors stories, we are giving a voice to individuals – to share their ideas, to share their thoughts, their achievements and perspectives. So please, continue to let us know your stories. It is through understanding others that we come to better understand ourselves. Email: Jenny.Graham@seniorsnewspaper.com,.au
Gardens a tour highlight
WARWICK Probus members shared a special moment on a visit to the Australian War Memorial in Canberra with two of their members laying commemorative wreaths. John Corcut and June Banks selected to lay wreaths at the closing ceremony on September 25. John’s father, Francis Corcut served in the RAAF as an armourer fitter in New Guinea. June’s uncle George Lindenberg was awarded a DFC while serving as a bomber pilot on the western front. A portrait of George Lindenberg hangs in the gallery at the Australian War Memorial. Probus members joined a tour to Canberra for Floriade and sightseeing which was organised by Crisps Coaches Warwick. The forward journey featured an inspection of a pecan nut farm near Moree, a visit to the Parkes radio telescope, and a leisurely stroll through the Japanese gardens in Cowra. Visits to Floriade, Cockington Green, Tulip Tops gardens and the national Arbore-
Dawn McLennan, Joan Ranger, Robyn Butler, Neil Dight, Delma Free, Caroline Hunter and Beryl Johns.
Other activities included a visit to the Canberra Space Station where we learned a little of the Mars mission, a morning at the Bus Depot Markets and a glass blowing exhibition. tum which featured the National Bonsai exhibit, enthralled those with green fingers or a love of gardens. Students of history and the national capital enjoyed visits to the National Capital Exhibition where we
learned about the planning and development of Canberra and the use of the natural environment in determining the location of government and commercial centres and urban and suburban residences.
Tours of old Parliament House (now the museum of Australian Democracy) new Parliament House, Lanyon homestead and the National Museum engaged the group in events which shaped Australia and pro-
vided a better understanding of the working of parliament and the different roles of the House of Representatives and the Senate. At the National Art Gallery we were introduced to Blue Poles (now a national treasure) and paintings by a variety of Australian and international artists including Monet, Picasso, Frederick McCubbin and Sidney Nolan.

IT was all systems go for a great day when Taylor Street Village residents handed over the loads of groceries, dog food, personal items and cash to the Drought Angels on Saturday, October 10. The Drought Angels are the brainchild of the Chinchilla family support centre and two young ladies – Nicki and Natasha. They take the plight of our drought affected families on board to give much needed assistance. In one of the longest running droughts in Queensland and with at least 85% of our state drought declared, it is timely that those of us that can step up and help those that are doing it tough. With 85 residents present at the Taylor Street village there was plenty of conversation and laughter as the barbecues fired up and with the wonderful aroma of cooking onions and saus-
outing. Social organiser, Carol, always has lots of fun things happening during the afternoon. If you are attending, let us know names and numbers as soon as possible. Payment of $20 pp required by November 28. For more details or for anyone requiring transport, please contact the Secretary on 4633 2564.

With a LifeLink personal alarm, help is only one button away LIFELINK alarms enable seniors to remain in their own homes, independent and safe, knowing that help is available at the touch of a button. For as little as $1.05 a day, Lifelink alarms provide peace of mind for people who are living alone, at risk of falls, dementia, epilepsy, physical disability or needing post hospitalisation care. Sixty-one-year-old Hana agrees that this is a small price to pay to feel safe and secure. She said: “The first
time I had to use it was when I fell over outside my back door, on the concrete….I could have been there for hours! It’s really good because the response centre operator talks to you the whole time and they ask who you want contacted.” Lifelink alarms are linked to real people at our 24/7 Response Centre and who will respond to any home emergency or problem immediately. Lifelink alarms connect to either your home phone or mobile phone network.
Both have a mobile pendant that is lightweight and can be worn as a necklace or clipped to clothes, and is water resistant so you can even wear it in the shower. When 86-year-old Evalyn fell over in the shower and couldn’t get up, she said: “Luckily I was wearing my alarm pendant… They rang my daughter for help… It’s really made a difference to me; I’m not worrying all the time about what’s going to happen if I have another fall.” Lifelink understands that

STEM CELL TECHNOLOGY Humans believe that ageing is inevitable – at GEN-X we disagree. NO DOUBT YOU’VE HEARD of stem cells but don’t know much about them. The rigorous debate surrounding stem cells has much to do with their proven restorative qualities evidenced in thousands of medical success stories globally. But what are they exactly? Put simply, stem cells are our body’s built-in repair system helping us to heal from injury and illness. We have about 200 different kinds of cells in our bodies that are organ specific, but stem cells are different. They’re able to change into other types of cells helping a range of organs and tissues to recover from trauma. This means that when our bone marrow releases stem cells they automatically target the damaged areas, in turn releasing growth factors to repair the tissue. For this reason stem cells are considered to be highly regenerative. In fact our own adult stem cells are the core essence to life and good health, and provide the platform for many cumulative health benefits. Did you know that from about the age of 26-27 years old the body gradually stops producing stem cells? Our body’s reserves gradually decrease, and our reduced ability to efficiently repair damaged tissue leads to aging. It’s not surprising then
Stem cells are our body’s built-in repair system helping us to heal from injury and illness that medical science today uses stem cells to enhance our general well-being with broad and proven benefits. In fact, GEN-X treatment programs are designed specifically to combat the challenges faced by reduced energy and endurance, compromised immune systems, fatigue and focus issues, poor post exercise recovery, post operative recovery, illness and injury as well as natural weight loss, muscle gain and overall health maintenance. Scientific research shows stem cell release rates from the bone marrow drops at an astonishing rate as we age. By the time we’re 65 years old, the release rate has dropped by more than 80% leaving only 20% of active stem cells circulating in the bloodstream. The good news is it’s never too late to start reversing these statistics. It’s now possible to activate our own adult stem cells with a revolutionary stem cell programme. Gen-X’s cutting-edge treat-
ment programs designed by a team of bio-chemists, scientists and health experts, provide advanced immune response, cellular repair and renewal. With a working knowledge of the unique, regenerative quality of stem cells, and with access to highly sophisticated technology, doctors today can also offer life-changing relief to patients suffering from a vast range of conditions and diseases. Using methods that stimulate adult stem cells from the bone marrow, muscle and tissue into the bloodstream, stem cells migrate to areas where they are most needed. This vital, life-sustaining process helps improve, maintain and preserve health and well-being throughout an entire lifetime. If you’d like to know and understand the benefits of stem cell treatments for your health, and improve your quality of life, give us a call today. Places are limited. At GEN-X, it is our opinion that growing older is simply a side effect of slow movements in medical science.
WE BELIEVE WE ARE LIGHT YEARS AHEAD. GEN-X offers an obligation-free consultation and we will link you with the very best Medical professionals, who know the truth about the future of medicine.

Travel with insurance and safety
NOBODY wants to think about the things that could go wrong during a holiday, but these things can and do happen. Whether you’re going round the world or Australia, organising travel insurance is an essential part of preparing for your trip. Travel cover exists to protect your investment in your journey and ensure you don’t lose out, and get
medical help, if things go wrong. Many people will return from a holiday with stories about getting lost, language barriers or other minor challenges. But, if things take a turn for the worse, it is important to have financial support behind you. Accidents can happen to anyone, and medical costs overseas can reach hundreds or thousands of dol-
lars. If you are uninsured, you (or your family) can be responsible for covering any medical or other costs resulting from unexpected incidents or accidents. The Australian Government won’t pay for your medical evacuation to Australia and may not pay for medical treatment overseas. So, travellers without travel insurance can be personally liable for covering any
medical and associated costs they incur. The best time to buy insurance is as soon as you have booked or finalised your holiday so you can benefit from cancellation cover and claim back any prepaid costs if you need to cancel your trip prior to departing. If you put this off until right before your trip, you won’t be able to take advantage of this cover – and
you could lose any non-refundable costs paid. National Seniors Insurance has partnered with the experts at Cerberus to provide affordable travel insurance that has been specially designed for the over 50s, underwritten by certain underwriters at Lloyd’s. We cover a range of pre-existing medical conditions and offer phone or online medical assess-
ment. Our cover includes financial support for a range of incidents, including lost luggage, emergency medical and dental expenses incurred overseas, as well as the provision of extra flights in the case of a delay or emergency. For more information or a quote, contact National Seniors Insurance 1300 50 50 99 or visit nationalseniorsinsurance.com.au.

(and cheaply) accessed in Kuala Lumpur. In addition to Petaling Street market, there is also Kuala Lumpur Central market which has a great array of traditional arts and crafts, food stalls and tourist souvenirs. KL also boasts some amazing architecture ranging from Islamic influenced buildings such as the
Kuala Lumpur Railway Station and Jamke Mosque, colonial period structures of which the Selengor Cricket Club is an example, right through to the futuristic Petronas Twin Towers. It costs nothing to stop and look. Also worth a visit is the very reasonably priced KL Bird Park.
BOUTIQUE EAT If fine dining is your preference, then Kuala Lumpur doesn’t disappoint. A good starting point for some chic eats in KLCC, home of the Petronas Twin Towers. For a birds eye view over the city you could try Italian-inspired Marini’s on 57 or Troika Sky Dining.

Welcome to Captain Ken of Getaway Tours WOW what a busy season we have had, we are still specialising in Longreach, Lightning Ridge and Carnarvon Gorge, tours. Longreach 2016: As a result of the unfortunate fire that destroyed the Waltzing Matilda Centre at Winton we have deleted Winton from our tour until the centre is rebuilt. Due to customer feedback we are now travelling by road both ways, no more train. Instead of looking out a train window for two days we added Charleville and Miles stop overs on the return journey. Still a 10-day tour, so contact us or check our website for our full itinerary. On the way home we stop at Charleville overnight. While here we stay at the Mulga Motel, we visit the Cosmos Centre and spend time “star gazing” and other places of interest. Next morning we depart Charleville after our town tour. Midday meal is at Morven as we travel to Miles where we stay the night at the Swagsman Motel Our evening meal and breakfast is at the motel, after breakfast we spend the morning at the Miles Pioneer Village before returning home. Compare these 10 full
days of adventure with any other Longreach tour and it is easy to see where the value for money is, we understand that this may well be a trip of a lifetime for most and this is why we have added so much into it. Why spend four days of a seven-day tour on a train and then little time at each attraction? Check our web site or call us for details. Lightning Ridge tour remains unchanged, this is a gem-packed tour.
❝
us for details Our tour structure is still unchanged, maximum 24 tourists on our tours, and your only extra expense on tour is for personal items. Note from Captain Ken: Our rewards program is now in place, check our web site or call us. We are in favour of earlybird prices. Our tours are organised, controlled, and operated by ourselves, with our coach captain in charge of each tour.
Lightning Ridge tour remains unchanged, this is a gem-packed tour. With an ever increasing number of people joining this tour, 2016 we will be doing five tours... With an ever increasing number of people joining this tour, 2016 we will be doing five tours to Lightning Ridge, and the message is to book early. Check our website or call us for details. Carnarvon Gorge is a sixday tour of a wonderland waiting to be explored. Helicopter ride, sunset evening, sunrise breakfast and two days of walking tracks. A reasonable level of fitness is required. Seeing is believing. Check our website or call
We are expecting 2016 to carry from a very successful 2015, so please book early and avoid disappointment, as mentioned earlier we have a maximum number of 24 on a tour. You have the option to lay-by your tour using our special lay-by tour holding account. Let’s go and let your experience exceed all expectations. www.getawaytours.com.au. HANDY APPS INTERNATIONALLY, Australian travellers are not known as great tippers – it’s not part of our culture. But in the “When in Rome, do as the Romans do” spirit, stepping up and following local customs, including tipping, is the way of the enlightened traveller. This is where the Tipulator app can help out by assisting with bill splitting and rapidly calculating the tip. The app is available on iPhone, iPad and Android with further information at iTunes Preview. Page 20 - Toowoomba & Darling Downs Seniors - November 2015

Don’t bin them, recycle old mobile phones by taking them to council THERE are more mobile phones in Australia than there are people. With so many phones in circulation have you ever wondered what happens to all of the old ones? Unfortunately a large portion of these end up in the bottom of cupboards never to see the light of day again. Rather than throwing away the phones, Lockyer
Valley mayor Steve Jones, is encouraging residents to bring them to the Council so they can be recycled. “It’s important the phones are not thrown out at the landfill but disposed in an effective manner,” Mayor Jones said. “Last financial year the Lockyer Valley collected and recycled more than 20kg of mobile phones,
