END-TIME

NOTE

As far as end-of-year wrap-ups go, December 2018 is hardly short on high-water marks. First off, the embattled midterm elections in November brought major wins for cannabis in various states across the country. Which was fantastic, and a needed positive push forward towards the goal of full federal legalization. But the fight is far from over, as evidenced by the continued short sightedness of the US Senate, where over the summer the Senate Appropriations Committee sank a cru-

from vehement supporters of the #overgrowandshare school of thought. Overall stigma still remains, as evidenced by the shenanigans the city pulled around the Boston Freedom Rally in the fall, and the claims that all the pot was bringing chaos and madness to the common. Meanwhile, the Red Sox did the baseball goodly again, so the city threw them the requisite Duck Boat parade resulting in half a dozen arrests, public drunkenness and urination, and at least one friend of mine who lives in an apartment along the parade spillover route who posted about the giant hot shit some blacked out Sox fan left on his doorstep during the party. Booze vs cannabis people. Cannabis always the classier crowd when the chips are down. Lastly, East Boston-born hallowed hall of greasy pizza, Papa Gino’s, perfectly demonstrated why labor unions need to come together and protect the working classes considering the brass at the chain unexpectedly shuttered almost 100 locations, casting longtime employees into the cold with zero warning just before the holidays as they filed for bankruptcy on the heels of poor corporate profits. If there was a final note about how legalizing weed in the Bay State earlier could have potentially helped out a local business to survive perilous business times, I’m not sure where to find a better one. See you in 2019.

Coastal Prep

Behold, your new Lovejoy Wharf go-to for first-date excellence For years, Tom Schlesinger-Guidelli was a standout and supremely knowledgeable libations liaison, making everyone’s experience at a litany of top-notch local eateries around the Hub a memorable one. And years after getting his start at the famed and now-shuttered East Coast Grill in Inman Square, and cutting his teeth in places like Eastern Standard and Island Creek Oyster Bar, Guidelli has finally brought his first official haunt to life to the glee of industry insiders and local diners seeking out a primo first-date locale with Harbor views. Boston, meet Alcove.

Situated at Lovejoy Wharf, at the edge of the West End/North End, Alcove promises to be a killer wine and classic-cocktails-with-a-twist kind of haunt and aims to be an homage to farm coasts and Mediterranean flavors and techniques (think: prosciutto-wrapped branzino, house-made bigoli with Rohan duck ragu, Jonah crab), all while hyping strong roots in the Bay State and ample New England sourced ingredients. The new construction comes packaged in a sleek coastal aesthetic feel (stone and grey/blue Cape Cod cottage vibes), reportedly inspired by a room at Guidelli’s family home in Westport. No, you can’t go visit his parents. But you can visit here instead. ALCOVE BOSTON // 50 Lovejoy Wharf, Boston 617-248-0050 // ALCOVEBOSTON.COM

LOUD Dress

A socially responsible pop-up musicthemed clothing brand plants roots on Newbury Street A few years ago former Villanova frat brothers, Casey Paton and Mark Lisavich, decided to ditch their careers and switch things up, both in terms of industry focus and life direction. The aim: Get into social philanthropy and create a brand and clothing line that would loosely parallel the moxie and successes of Life is Good, a local powerhouse brand (launched by another Villanova alum), as well as the Greatful Dead’s Rex Foundation. Basically anything that supports individuals and small organizations doing community-driven charity work and leans heavy on corporate social responsibility. The result was the test flight of Encore Apparel Company vis-à-vis a temporary pop-up storefront in the Charlestown Navy Yard. But that was a few years ago.

Additionally, the whole shop is designed to feel like a record store-slash-musician hangout, which explains

Who’s Got Next?

BNEG turns downtown’s GEM into a free play barcade of its own. I had dinner once at GEM, the former restaurant-then-nightclub hybrid watering hole located spitting distance from Marliave and Sam LaGrassa’s in Downtown Crossing. That’s…about all I can remember of the experience. Which is fine, because owners Big Night Entertainment Group (Red Lantern, The Grand, Scorpion Bar, Empire) have scrapped that idea and gone in a new en-vogue direction of nightlife around town—namely, stripping the place of whatever former sexy vibes it had and turning it into a funky street-art-meetshipster-funhouse of beer, bar food, and arcade games. Versus, as the name implies, is an arcade bar. Think: tons of classic (Air Hockey, Skee Ball, Ms. Pac Man) and nu-classic stand-up games (‘90s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles multi-player, X-Men vs Street Fighter, Buck Hunter), as well as console play, vintage pinball, party-style hands-touch-the-game lawn Jenga, and Connect 4, all falling under the delightful “free play” mantra for all games and machines. There are also bar pizzas. Never a bad thing to have a new spot for those. One caveat: Free play can sometimes mean “this damn thing doesn’t even work.” Fortunately, this is one arcade where you don’t have to chase down a change bro to reimburse your two bits devoured by a busted Donkey Kong unit. –DM

That relationship will solidify for anyone finding a Maine Cedar Hot Tub flanking wherever they lay their head. I hope the cannabis industry brings cannabis cafes, justice, and shared profits. This means seeing the rise of cannabis co-operatives, easier ways to clear expungement records for past cannabis crimes, and access to social consumption to help individuals who live in public housing, rent, and even tourists. This will take effort at the community level, the municipal level, the CCC. The state will have to create a process for automatic expungement and legal relief, and as far as social consumption, the state will have to create a framework for municipalities to accept social consumption initiatives, and the CCC will have to create guidelines for it as well. Municipalities will have to create bylaws and consumers will have to advocate for bring your own cannabis (#BYOC) cannabis lounges and cafes, as well as accessible zoning and locations. Ultimately, I hope 2019 brings coffee joints and justice!

Shaleen Title Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission

I’d like to see the 20 percent of adults who consume cannabis treated like who they are—normal, responsible, law-abiding citizens—instead of criminals. If they haven’t harmed others or asked for help, we should let them work and go about their lives like anyone else, including using cannabis and growing or purchasing it. As part of this vision, I hope to see a safe, equitable, and thriving cannabis industry and will continue to work toward that.

A little bit of Yankee ingenuity can go a long way, and it shows with locally made Pot Pockets. Hailing from Wrentham Massachusetts, their joint-toting joy was born from a need for patients to carry medicine discreetly and safely. These little wooden beauties carry up to three joints or blunts, and can even extinguish a lit joint to be resumed later (as a joint carrier should). Handmade and affordable, this is one great gift to slide across at a swap or just hand off to grandma now that she’s gotten hip to a post-dinner jibber with you. Pot Pockets. $20, POTPOCKETS.US

We can put Go-Pros on their heads to see the world from their point of view, and the New York Times reported recently that a canine researcher is performing MRIs on dogs to try to see inside their brains, but there is still no way we can experience life as animals do. That’s a secret they keep to themselves, and it drives us crazy. When I once suggested to a researcher in Yellowstone it would be cool to be inside a coyote’s brain for five minutes, he replied that he would give anything for just one second inside there.

Dominion vs. Domination The way we look at animals has changed a lot, especially over the last 50 years, and we are finally coming to terms with animal sentience, or at least the concept that animals have feelings, too. The Biblical injunction comes early, in its first chapter. “And God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness,’” Genesis 1:26 reads. “And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.” That one word in there—dominion—has proved problematic. What does dominion really mean? Does it mean we humans must exert control over all other creatures or be their caretakers? Marc Bekoff is an ethologist (someone

CBD 4 K9s CBD is all the rage these days—and not only for humans. More and more veterinarians are learning about this compound and are now suggesting it to their canine patients for pain relief, anxiety and behavior issues, and inflammation, especially in older dogs. A clinical study from Cornell released earlier this year suggests that CBD oil can help increase comfort for dogs with osteoarthritis. My local humane society now stocks CBD products, and my vet says she hasn’t found any real downsides, although she suggests talking with a doctor about medications the dog might already be taking before starting a CBD protocol. There are lots of choices, but one place to start might be Mary’s Whole Pet, a new farm-to-table line from Mary’s Medicinals and Elite Botanicals. All plants used for the oil are grown on an organic, chemical- and pesticide-free family farm in Colorado, and the list of products includes drops (in two potencies based on weight), capsules of different dosages, and a transdermal gel pen for fast-acting relief for dry skin, cracked nose or paws, or surface wounds. One warning: THC, the compound generally associated with the cannabis high, should never be given to dogs. Keep your edible products away from your canine companions. Because it’s federally illegal, no scientific tests have been done on dosage levels for animals. As suggested with humans, start low and go slow to find the right dose. And always remember that every animal is different; what works for some won’t work for others.

who studies the science of animal behavior) and researcher who has been working with animals his entire life. “A lot of this is driven from the view that as humans we are a superior species, and we are allowed to do what we want,” he says. “But dominion doesn’t mean domination.” Religion has played its role, he explains, in passages like the one above that claim only humans have souls. “Another reason is that if you distance yourself from other animals,” Bekoff says, “it allows you to do what you want.” This kind of detachment allows us to control animals, whether that means shooting them for trophies, keeping them in zoos, or producing them for research purposes. “In terms of industry, you can understand where people come from,” Bekoff says. Allowing that animals have feelings changes that dynamic considerably and begs even more questions. That humans are unique was accepted dogma for most of human history. Companion Animals What does this have to do with the way we interact with our dogs? I scoffed originally when the city of Boulder, Colorado, changed the word “owner” to “guardian” in its ordinances almost two decades ago. It’s nothing more than a symbolic gesture, one of those “only in Boulder” things, I told myself, agreeing with a city attorney who at the time called it “social engineering.” I have since come to appreciate the distinction. Ownership, as noted above, suggests that you can do whatever the hell you want, and, at its worst leads to behavior that obliterates all distinctions and leads to atrocities like dog- or cockfighting. Many experts believe extracts are more addictive and suggest avoiding them, as Bloom does, because he prefers the natural product, literally ground leaves from the trees, usually harvested by small family businesses deep in the rainforests of southeast Asian countries. Although rare in the United States, some users in Thailand looking to get high make a kratom cocktail called a 4x100, a mixture of dried kratom leaves, cough syrup, Coca-Cola, and ice that’s popular there, where kratom has been illegal since 1943 (which has more to do with boosting opium taxes than anything else). It’s up to everyone who benefits from kratom to fight back when the government and media make inaccurate statements and vilify the plant, Bloom says. “After doing your own research and getting comfortable that it is a good thing for you—and society at large—write your Congress members, spread the word, and correct misinformation out there whenever you can.”
