There is nothing quite as exhilarating as be-

ginning a new year with a clean slate full of promise and a new lease on life. The year prior was one of lessons, excitement, travel, art, innovation, chaos, political unraveling, and more. It’s like we’re about to hear someone yell, “You’ve been punked!” No such luck. It’s also the year I came on board as the managing editor of Sensi, Southern California. Admittedly, I had a few hesitations because my knowledge of cannabis was limited to days in high school spent sitting in a corner eating brownies, deep thinking, and people watching. Cannabis has come a long way since then! As CBD gains the credibility it deserves, I’m in awe of its progress. I use CBD on a regular basis to manage migraines and curb stress when it rears its ugly head, and I’m meeting more and more people whose lives have been transformed by this magical plant and flower. From incredible documentaries to cookbooks galore, cannabis is finding its way to a classier respectabilité. It has transformed from the likes of an ingénue and is now the cool kid in town—and one that’s here to stay. This issue is our first of the new year, and I say we start off with panache, a.k.a. more heart, drive, and intriguing content. This issue we’re exploring what’s new and what’s ahead. From exquisite new hotels to sophisticated cannabis popup dining and social events throughout California, we’re in for a bewitching adventure. Whether we turn to art, hospitality, cannabis, or travel, there seems to be a trending theme embracing the notion that perhaps we’ve become a bit too hasty in our lives and it’s time to pause, appreciate the simpler things, and commit to having far more captivating experiences. In other words, it’s going to be a revelatory year. As you turn the pages of this Sensi issue, I hope you experiment, laugh a little more, get curious about life and yourself. While we have big plans this year, remember that none of us know exactly where life will lead us, which is precisely why it’s the idyllic time to live with a little reckless abandon. Push yourself to see more, do more, and try more. In the words of Elon Musk, “If you get up in the morning and think the future is going to be better, it is a bright day.” Live boldly,

ART

Ai Weiwei: Life Cycle The Marciano Art Foundation in Central Los Angeles (MARCIANOARTFOUNDATION.ORG ) is a contemporary art hub for socially imperative exhibitions. This month is no exception. Beijing-born, Berlin-living artist Ai Weiwei is featuring his work, Life Cycle, taking viewers through a sculptural response to the growing refugee crisis around the world. Weiwei’s beautifully delicate work is juxtaposed with strong, fibrous materials, inviting viewers to experience art in a highly immersive format. Black Box, the first commentative piece Weiwei did in 2015, is an inflatable sculpture made of black PVC rubber representing boats emigrating to Europe. Made from bamboo using traditional Chinese kite-making techniques, Life Cycle is a follow-up to Black Box, a piece with raw, exposed materials that begs the question of permanence and humanity. Sculptures dangle above and are situated all around the bulk of the museum space. From the thought-provoking 14 JANUARY 2019 Southern California

Sunflower Seeds exhibit dispersing millions of porcelain sunflower seeds, to the Chinese zodiac symbols represented in the aerial pieces, this deeply impressive installation evokes sentiments of feeling lost and displaced in a sea of political chaos. Top Chef Standout Opens Ms. Chi Café

Shirley Chung first made a name for herself on Bravo’s Top Chef. The

dish that gave her an edge was jumbo cheeseburger potstickers with tomato bacon jam that showcased her heritage of being born in Beijing and growing up in America. That dish became the inspiration behind several culinary concepts Chang brought to life, but her new restaurant, Ms. Chi Café (MSCHICAFE.COM ), is her truest expression of cooking and culture. Featuring Chinese-American cuisine, Ms. Chi Café opened in late 2018 and has already garnered attention with a menu that goes off script featuring dishes such as the California Monk scallion pancake sandwich and Hot Dog Bao that appeal to a range of diners including vegan, gluten-free, meat-loving foodies, and those who appreciate traditional cuisine. Chung may be one of the most tenacious, driven women you’ll ever meet. She is endearing and innovative, but her intellect and vision are what drive her, and the result is inventiveness. She runs Ms. Chi Café alongside her husband, Jimmy Lee, amid the remarkable growth of Culver City. From film to food, this part of Los Angeles has a personality evident in every fixture, business, restaurant, bar, and historic sight, and Ms. Chi Café is extending that message.

A Woman’s Guide to Cannabis: Using Marijuana to Feel Better, Look Better, Sleep Better– and Get High Like a Lady

Author, cannabis lawyer, and consultant Nikki Furrer began her cannabis journey after her store, Pudd’nhead Books in Webster Groves, Missouri, had to close its doors. Furrer suffered a severe back injury which led the quick-witted storyteller to seek relief. Furrer packed up everything she owned, shoved it all in a U-Haul, and headed to the cannabis capitol of Colorado in search of answers and education. What she discovered there completely changed her life. She not only felt pain relief, but also found that cannabis allowed her to feel “more beautiful, healthier, and happier.” That led to a job at a dispensary, where Furrer began to cultivate flowers, help customers looking for relief, and in the process recognize the need for women to understand how much better their lives could be with cannabis. She also wanted to shift perception by presenting cannabis as sophisticated and classy. While this book is geared towards women, it’s missing a “No Boys Allowed” sign for a very good reason. “This book is meant for rookies and experienced marijuana users alike,” Furrer says. The goal was to write a book that she could give to her mom and friends explaining the ABCs of cannabis benefits in a conversational tone anyone could understand. The book includes guides that walk readers through everything from navigating the common dispensary to understanding the difference between concentrates, edibles, vapes, and tinctures. With witty stories written much like a fiction novel, it will make you laugh, feel less inhibited, and learn to see cannabis in a new light. Furrer even includes recipes for edibles such as Netflix and Chill Caramels and beauty products like Happy Body Bars. $16.95 - Available January 8. 16 JANUARY 2019 Southern California

Contemporary Women Artists

John Gosslee & Heather Zises, Editors

Before you even get to the book itself—on the very first turn of the cover— you are given an introspection of women’s rights and the history of activism and equality by way of quotes, including the beginning words of the Declaration of Independence, “We hold these truths to be self evident.” It seems we’ve forgotten the core principles that make our nation so fantastic. 50 Contemporary Women Artists delves into the fascinating compendium of artists and architects who have made extraordinary contributions to feminism and culture, including implementation of the rights we were all given. This book is more than activism, visual nuances, and social cues. This book showcases the exemplary influence women have been instrumental in creating in their continual battle to be recognized as equals. Its 360-pages feature brilliant works from design, modern art, fine art, architecture, and socially powerful pieces that encourage the conversation to continue. It is a wonderful look at women’s education, appreciation, and struggle as visible in the political, cultural, environmental, social, and psychological confines. This is an ideal book for educators, curators, purveyors, social activists, and art appreciators. –DG $45 on Amazon

“WE BELIEVE THAT SMOKE IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST HURDLES TO CHANGE THE NEGATIVE CANNABIS STIGMA, AND WE’RE OFFERING HEALTHIER AND TASTIER ALTERNATIVES.”

Braunstein set out to curate elevated smoke-free cannabis events that expand well beyond the bud and onto the plate and into your senses. While creating a variety of events incorporating the seductive art of burlesque, live art, musical transcendence, and the escapism found in virtual reality, Braunstein realized cannabis dining experiences were lacking. That’s when he created Taste Buds—a culinary experience like no other in the city—to incorporate everything he loves. “I wanted to create upscale and sophisticated events that are different from all other cannabis events out there where cannabis is not the sole

While not every course is THCor CBD-infused, there are bud bars, edibles, and dosing experts on site at some of the larger events, so even cannabis novices won’t be without guidance. Some of the curated Grassfed dinners include evocative themes like Hummus and Hashish. “At Hummus and Hashish, all of the dishes were non-infused and we had an infusion station in which guests could choose their own CBD/THC dosage and serving,” says Braunstein. Braunstein continues, “I always try to pair the cuisine we serve with the music we play, whether it’s live or recorded, so for instance we had a Soul Food event with R&B and funk music playing during dinner, Hummus and Hashish was paired with Arabic and Middle Eastern tunes, and so on and so forth. I’m passionate about the music and food always being in sync.” Braunstein believes cannabis is a healing plant and antioxidant first and foremost. Grassfed has partnered for the series with top cannabis flower and concentrate brands to ensure guests have the highest quality products in a space meant to expand community.

It’s like a 360-dome and other VR experiences, but it’s accompanied by fine strains of cannabis.” In addition to producing Grassfed events, Braunstein also offers provision and consultation services to assist other cannabis event planners in accessing the best cannabis offerings available. He is also working on a live music series in addition to several other exciting surprises set to be announced by spring.

Health and wellness trends surface at such rapid rates, it’s hard to know what to try, what’s a gimmick, and what will actually do you and your body good. Among those trending is a therapy that’s sweeping sports medicine, healing athletes, and is now available to the general public: cryotherapy. Cryotherapy is typically called cold therapy because extremely low, near-freezing temperatures are used to treat injuries and stress and reset your lymphatic system. It has been used to treat weight loss, stress, cell degeneration, and tissue lesions as an alternative to other more invasive techniques.

Cryotherapy is typically called cold therapy because extremely low, near-freezing temperatures are used to treat injuries and stress and reset your system.

I learned about cryotherapy when entrepreneur and multimillionaire Robert Herjavec agreed to step inside a cryotherapy tank on Shark Tank. Wearing nothing but a pair of swim trunks, he stood while subzero temperatures blasted all around him and walked out obviously cold but said he felt reinvigorated. That led me to schedule a visit to a USCryotherapy (USCRYOTHERAPY.COM ) office near me. So, what can you expect? According to Dr. Robert H. Shmerling of Harvard University, whole-body cryotherapy involves “putting on a pair of gloves, shoes, socks, and a ing little else. Then you step into a cold room for two to four minutes. By cold, I mean really cold: between -1.1°C and 4°C (which is 30°F to 40°F)!” And he was right— it’s freezing! When I scheduled my services at the USCryotherapy center in Studio City owned by Susan Sagheb and Patty Reid, I never imagined how good I’d feel doing it. If nothing else, it woke me up. I started with a new procedure using a state30 JANUARY 2019 Southern California

of-the-art Ballancer®Pro. I put on workout clothes and a cloth barrier and then climbed—literally—into what felt like a NASA astronaut suit. I did this for both my upper and lower body. Once I got suited up and comfortable in my room, they plugged me in and cold compression began. The Ballancer®Pro is compression therapy that stimulates the lymphatic system, gently decongesting body parts that are hanging on to fluids. The whole session for upper and lower body lasted about 55 minutes, and while I sat there feeling the compression moving through my exterior, I could literally feel my body releasing stress and readjusting from the inside out. For the next therapy, I stripped down to lie in a red bed called a Novothor, made up of red near-infrared lights used to help regenerate injured cells, reduce inflammation and pain, and even help with weight loss and improve vision

SAN DIEGO'S FAVORITE STOREFRONT and overall focus and well-being. It also helps lymphatic drainage and blood circulation, making it the perfect companion for the BallancerPro. Initially it feels like you’re climbing into a tanning bed. I laid my naked body on the bed of lights, closed myself into the pod, and waited 10 minutes while relaxing, breathing, and losing myself in the warmth of the perfectly calibrated lights. It’s an unusual exercise to lay perfectly still, soaking up light much like plants soak up sun for photosynthesis, but it has a healing effect that words seem ineffective in relaying. The light therapy is known as photobiomodulation, and time in the bed varies depending on each individual’s needs. Sure, it feels more like you’ve volunteered to star in a sci-fi film in terms of the bed emitting an endless sea of lights, but it is worth trying, especially because it is non-toxic, non-invasive, and has no negative side effects. The final form of cryotherapy I did was the whole-body cryotherapy chamber. Much like Shmerling described, doing cryotherapy is like intentionally standing outside in a blizzard wearing a bikini. Every instinct in you wants to run for clothing and sit by a heater, but the shock to the system keeps you present—and it definitely has an effect on your overall mindset. At USCryotherapy in Studio City, the cryotherapy is attached to a sound sys-

Yes, I was shivering, but my body felt the stress it was carrying get iced out, and the feeling didn’t dissipate once my body finally regulated its core temperature. While numerous claims back up the power of cryotherapy, no full-proof data says it’s 100 percent body altering. That doesn’t mean you won’t have results. Two weeks after I did my cryotherapy sessions, I felt better than I had in a long while. As for the Novothor, the science behind light therapy is confounded in scientific data that dates back some 40 years and can be found in thousands of clinics, hospitals, and elite athletic institutions in over 70 nations. It was one of the most relaxing and stimulating 10 minutes I’ve ever spent doing anything for my body. therapy can deliver any of the claims and benefits. The American Academy of Dermatology has released a statement for consumers that does not support its use. Because of the lack of research, WBC has not been cleared by the Food and Drug Administration for treating any medical indication.

NEW HOTELS, NEW MINDSET Taking prestige and relaxation to new heights. Southern California consists of just under 20 million residents, making up almost half the state’s population, according to the most recent US Census data, and while domestic travel to California continues to grow, that means a As travelers and residents become savvier by the minute, the search for innovative new hotels is ongoing. Luckily, Californians and those who love to come here have three new hotels that offer more than gorgeous design. These hotels encourage guests to let go, unwind, and embrace a new mindset. In downtown Los Angeles, two new hotel concepts are bringing luxury, elegance, modernism, and a much-needed sense of relaxation. That is also echoed in a new hotel concept at a historic site in San Diego.

Once upon a time in

Los Angeles, Broadway lights flittered on the streets of downtown, bringing with it the charm of Hollywood and the cool of New York. Thus the Hoxton came to be. With the influence of mid-century modern, bright lights, and the allure of discretion, the 10-story, 174-room hotel overlooks the contrast of neon signs, art, time, and the once-thriving railway. What’s most impressive about the Hoxton is its approach to hospitality, evident in something as simple as the room names: Snug, Cosy, Roomy, and Biggy. The hotel strips away the snobbery that can sometimes come with luxury hotels, and immediately, with a simple approach to naming its rooms, eludes to a playful and whimsical stay. That said, the adorably named rooms are nothing short of luxurious. From bespoke timber

DIARY OF AN ICE BATH How sous vide cooking has made a comeback. Mastering the Art of Sous Vide Cooking, the newly released delectable guide to being a sous vide cooking master by Chef Justice Stewart, founder of the popular blog Gourmet De-Constructed (GOURMETDECONSTRUCTED.COM ), is an insightful breakdown of the sous vide method (cooking food in a water bath at low, controlled temperatures follow steps with gourmet recipes from appetizers to sinful desserts and a comprehensive list of the tools you’ll need to be the star of your kitchen. A passionate cook and Queens-born New Yorker, Stewart takes curious home cooks and experienced chefs on a culinary adventure, paying tribute to the sous vide cooking method invented by a physicist named Benjamin Thompson in 1799. Sous vide was a mistake, but that happy accident continues to influence chefs and cooks around the world. With fond memories of fishing with his father, Stewart reminisces about how the smell of freshly caught fish bathed in batter and fried in oil inspired a lifelong culinary adventure, including learning the art of sous vide. Julie Saltman of Buddle, whose practice in Boulder, Colorado, is devoted to helping people understand and navigate complex cannabis laws. “There’s just this sort of roadblock in terms of what’s been created by the federal law.” There are bills pending in the US Congress that address various aspects of legalization. Sen. Cory Booker’s bill for legalization includes expungement of records for cannabis crimes, but it might be the least likely to get any movement forward. “You know, we sit here and we say, ‘Oh, it’s so crazy that you wouldn’t want to clear the record of people for this thing that we’re all now agreeing is legal,’ ” Saltman says. “But so many people in the government writing the laws don’t think that way. They think, ‘Well, it was illegal when you did this. So…’ ” Events like National Expungement Week are a good start for raising awareness, but there’s plenty of work to be done to get this issue on the radar for the majority of people who can’t comprehend the problems those who have served time face in getting their lives back together. In November 2018, legislators in New Jersey, who are now considering legalizing cannabis, proposed a plan that includes fast-tracking the procedure. “By streamlining the expungement process, the state can help ensure that people with criminal records for marijuana-related offenses get a clean slate,” Kate Bell, counsel for the Marijuana Policy Project, said in a statement. “Nobody should be branded a criminal simply for using a substance that is less harmful than alcohol.” In September 2018, all seven judges of the Seattle Munici-

sealed. The Massachusetts Rec Council’s Gilmore says it took intense lobbying to get it into the current plan. “It’s restrictive, with no teeth, and it’s not helping the people it should help,” he says. But, he adds, it’s a start. In 2014, California passed Prop 47, which allows many nonviolent offenses, such as drug and property offenses and shoplifting, to be changed from felonies to misdemeanors. Gov. Jerry Brown last fall signed Assembly Bill 1793, which requires the Department of Justice, before July 2019, to review hundreds of thousands of cannabis cases in the state’s database and identify convictions that should be dismissed, vacated, or reduced from a felony to a misdemeanor. And the city of San Francisco is working with a nonprofit organization that would allow cannabis convictions to be vacated within its jurisdiction.

CANNASAFE

The First Accredited Cannabis Testing Lab In The World Keeps It Real—And Safe— For Cannabis Consumers ONE OF THE MOST TRUSTED LABS IN CALIFORNIA HELPS ADVISE STATE REGULATORS ABOUT STANDARDS WHILE IT REFINES ITS BUSINESS MODEL FOR FUTURE EXPANSION. One of the key components of this industry going forward is the safety of the cannabis being sold for either adult or medical use. And one of the key players on that side of the business is CannaSafe, based in Van Nuys, with an 8,000-square-foot facility, one of the largest in California and the first accredited cannabis lab on the planet. “We also have the largest market share of any testing lab now, in the double digits,” Aaron Riley, president of CannaSafe, says, adding that they are the official laboratory for the High Times Cannabis Cup. CannaSafe does potency testing, terpene analysis, residual solvent analysis, pesticide analysis, microbial pathogen screening, mycotoxin analysis, heavy metals analysis, and more for everyone from growers and cultivators to brands manufacturers and dispensary microbusinesses. They work with some of the top brands in the industry, like Moxie, Dosist, King Pen, 3C, Heavy Hitters, and other top Los Angeles grow brands. Riley is one of those serial entrepreneurs that so often take the leap into the cannabusiness—an MBA who ran an investment business and a car dealership, then spent two years networking with others in the cannabis industry to make sure he did his due diligence. He found a partner with a background in developing a lab, and decided cannabis lab services would be his niche. The CannaSafe lab, opened in 2011 and accredited in 2012, was started by another group. Riley bought out those partners in 2016. The company currently has about 45 employees now, Riley says, with 30 being lab employees. Of those, 15-20 are lab techs and 10 are scientists. He says that he works with California regulators about 60 JANUARY 2019 Southern California

rules for testing products, with the goal of providing input for cannabis testing standards. “We just stay current,” he says. “Whenever the regulators put something out, we have the whole team read it. We make our comments and discuss it with them. And they have been pretty receptive to us because of our good name as an accredited lab.” CannaSafe is also one of only two accredited labs in the state that are eligible for a full annual license, something that will come about in 2019. Cannabis testing labs are currently working on temporary and provisional licenses in the state. Riley says that his lab is growing rapidly—the legalization of adult use in California caused a huge surge in business— and he wants to replicate their business model. “We are being entertained by the Mexican government now,” he says. “And we plan to open four labs in 2019, and bolster our California presence.” He says that they are going to open an exclusive research and development lab soon, and start doing some research into oncology, plus the genomics of the plant and how it interacts with human cells. “So we have some really cool things in the pipeline.” For more information, visit:

nabis makes them feel anxious and disoriented. The difference in experiences comes down to brain chemistry.

As the cannabis industry grows, so does the number of professionals within it, acting as incredible sources of insider info on the trends and issues driving the marketplace forward. The Sensi Advisory Board is comprised of select industry leaders in a variety of fields, from compliance and education to concentrates and cultivation. They are invited to share specialized insight in this dedicated section. This month, we hear from a member in the Cannabis Marketing and Resource category. FOR A FULL LIST OF ADVISORY BOARD MEMBERS, SEE THE MASTHEAD ON PAGE 11.

When consuming cannabis, THC binds to the cannabinoid receptors in your brain, releasing the neurotransmitters dopamine, GABA, and serotonin. These chemicals are associated with feeling calm and happy, but for some, a large rush of these chemicals can have the opposite effect. Suzannah Weiss wrote an article in Tonic (TONIC.VICE.COM ) explaining that type A or anxiety-prone personalities tend to experience that heightened dopamine rush isolated in the limbic forebrain, which can trigger anxiety and fear of social judgment. Should you experience what’s referred to as “super-anxiety” after using cannabis, you can still get amazing benefits from cannabis

ANXIETY AND CANNABIS:

Why Cannabis Induces Anxiety and How to Choose Products That Reduce It by H O L LY G R A H A M , L E A F B U Y E R Cannabis can induce some pretty intense panic attacks and paranoia—so how is it possible that it can be used to help anxiety? The answer comes down to a few different factors, including method of consumption, ratio of THC to CBD, and strain selection.

Understanding How Anxiety and Cannabis Work with Brain Chemistry Even though many people rave about how cannabis helps them relax, de-stress, and experience more creative freedom, that experience is not universal; some find can-

if you’re willing to research the factors below.

Method of Cannabis Consumption If you’re prone to anxiety from cannabis, dabbing, concentrates, and THC, edibles are not going to be the best mode of consumption for you as they tend to have high doses of THC, last a long time, and can be intense. You can still toke up if you’re prone to anxiety but avoid high-THC strains and methods of consumption that produce long-lasting effects.

Ratio of THC to CBD One of the most important factors when selecting a product that helps with anxiety is the ratio of THC to CBD. CBD produces the same anti-inflammatory and calming effects of THC without getting you high. THC activates the cannabinoid 1 receptor in your mind and body, while CBD blocks those receptors, causing a more mellow response. CBD, or products that offer a higher or equal ratio of CBD to THC, help lessen anxiety. The most effective ratio of cannabis products is 1:1, meaning equal parts THC to CBD.

Finding the Right Strain and Terpenes for Anxiety Cannabis plants contain terpenes that are shared by other plants like lemons, lavender, and pine. For a long time, terpenes were thought to enhance the flavor of the smoke, but researchers are now finding that strains high in terpenes like limonene and linalool are excellent for uplifttry experimenting with different strains and select ones like Lemon Drop or Grapefruit Haze that are more uplifting.

Can Cannabis Really Be Used to Treat Anxiety? In general, anxiety and cannabis can work together, but be mindful if you’re experiencing regular symptoms of anxiety. In that case, consult a medical professional and only experiment with cannabis if they think it’s appropriate for you. 62 JANUARY 2019 Southern California

SPROUTLY CANADA Drink in the benefits. As Canada continues to lead the way in cannabis production, development, and government support, Sproutly Canada (SPROUTLY.CA ) is taking accessibility and benefit even further. Founded on the principle that cannabinoid benefits are far too ground-breaking to ignore, Sproutly Canada, through its subsidiary Infusion Biosciences Canada, created a revolutionary technology that allows it to produce their own water-soluble cannabis solution. Rather than utilizing harmful chemicals like ethanol, butane, and CO2 that alter the cannabinoids in cannabis, Sproutly developed an ingestible water-soluble product offering maximum benefits to both mind and body. CEO Keith Dolo believes people need to shift away from smoking to give their bodies the best result and response time.
