amusement park designed around different places in the world. Each “country” consists of local dioramas, the culture and food indigenous to that particular region, and all the people who work in each respective country speak the native language. As an impatient young teenager, I wasn’t bored. In fact, I was fascinated. That experience sparked something deep within that made my curiosity to see more of the world too persistent to ignore, and so at the age of 24, off I went. While I was fortunate enough to spend a few teenage weekends in TJ (Tijuana), the first trip I ever took on my own was Hawaii, and that evolved into visiting Belize, Guatemala, Ireland, and more. Throughout my travels, I have met some of the most incredible human beings, many of whom are now some of my dearest friends. The lightness and excitement of experiencing a new place, whether it’s a city, state, or country, opens your eyes to something more profound than words can do justice.
“I’m in love with cities I’ve never been to and people I’ve never met.” —John Green
This issue we travel through the city, leave the state for a Hawaiian adventure, and delve into local delights to inspire you to explore your own surroundings. No matter where you are in your journey, keep your mind open, your heart abound, your taste buds fluent, and your passion very much alive. May you find the voice of the world calling.

May the 4th Be With You 4 Mile Virtual Race May 4, 2019 // All day
The four-mile race with a purpose and the right ingredients of Jedi mind tricks and using the Force is upon us. On May 4, in the heart of Los Angeles, you are hereby challenged to run for Yoda—okay, maybe not actually Yoda, but the motto “May the Fourth be with you” is the driving force behind this race, which donates 15 percent of proceeds to Soles 4 Soles, a nonprofit that gives shoes to people in need. Run or walk, it doesn’t matter, because once you’ve finished, you’ll be given your own glow-inthe-dark medal with life advice from Yoda that reads, “In a dark place we find ourselves, and a little more knowledge lights our way.” That green creature of endless wisdom challenges you to sign up, show up, and run or walk because the force is strong with you. Remember that it doesn’t matter where you do the run/walk, just that you log in, choose the course, time yourself, and report back to Obi-Wan—or 10 MAY 2019 Los Angeles

AFFORDABLE TRAVEL TAKES The simple things make traveling so much easier. As we pack our bags in hopes of either an overnight staycation or a true escape somewhere fascinating, the continual shift in what we can and can’t take with us seems to be mounting faster than we can keep up. Thankfully, as flight rules change and road trips become more popular, traveling light doesn’t mean giving up things that matter. Beauty regimes, fitness routines, creature comforts, and clean clothes make traveling all the more successful. Below is a look at some products I’ll never travel without. Whether I’m road tripping or traveling to the other side of the world, these things make my life on the road easier, more luxurious, and lighter—and fit snugly in my suitcase.
BEAUTY + SELF-CARE In a world where beauty tricks and fads seem to hit our inbox faster than a hummingbird’s flapping wings, travel-friendly products are becoming more the norm. CBD FRIENDLY, CREATIVE APPROVED Cannabis love in the city of angels and demons.
Los Angeles has a beautiful romanticism that echoes through our streets and finds life in the art, the people, the continual evolution of reviving our past, and the mentality that life here is meant to be explored in great depth. Growing up here opened my eyes to appreciating interesting artists, exploratory chefs, a constant desire to better our lives, and our willingness to try whatever new health fad trickles through the city streets. That has never been more true than the moment cannabis became legalized on a state level, and mixologists, chefs, artists, designers, and the like began infiltrating their creations with the glorious plant and its derivatives. While California is a smoke-free state (for the most part), there are some inspiring places throughout the city that are cannabis-friendly, muse-worthy, and altogether terrific places to visit.

What are some of the more fascinating culinary cannabis dishes you’ve created? The most amazing one coming up is the saffron Chateau d’Yquem 99 Sautern sauce for the eight-course cannabis-infused dinner taking place on 4/20 in Bel Air. The wine for sauce alone cost me $3,000 at an auction. I bought it over 15 years ago and am donating it for the dinner. I also a created a 24-karat gold cannabis-infused brownie of 1,000 milligrams with a Johnny Walker Blue Label Valrohna chocolate ganache glaze. That brownie sells for $1,000. What is the inspiration behind the 4/20 menu for the eight-course sit-down dinner? Spring, and creating something the diners have never had before, which is very hard to do—but I know how to do it. STORYTELLING AT ITS FINEST What makes a tour guide extra special is when the guide is not only friendly and knowledgeable but also an excellent storyteller. Hawaii Horse and Trail (HAWAII-FOREST.COM ) offers experiences that take you into nature. From lush forests to diverse communities, the company takes guests outside of their resorts to enjoy the nature and culture that shapes O’ahu. The tours are designed around exclusive access to places visitors cannot go on their own, as well as in-
SCUBA DIVE WITH NAVY SEALS Whether you are a diver or a novice, you can spend the day underwater with the world’s best. Experience the wonder of being submerged in the clear blue waters, exploring the ocean world as you learn basic diving skills and enjoy hand-held experiences with certified PADI instructors. All equipment for this adventure is provided, including snacks and a fun crew of professionals. You will head to Electric Beach and the natural surrounding reef, which are known for pristinely clear waters and an abundance of reef
terpretive guides who are highly knowledgeable about the Hawaiian Islands—and who share their personal interpretation of what makes the land, culture, and lifestyle on the island so special. Guests will leave their tours with an enhanced love for Hawaii. Tours include a Farm-to-Forest Experience that explores the confluence of West O’ahu’s natural and cultural histories through its historic sites, stories, people, and food, as well as a Birds and Wildlife of O’ahu experience that takes advantage of Hawaii Forest and Trail’s unparalleled land access and expert birding guides.
fish, turtles, octopi, and the occasional white tip reef shark. Trident Adventures (TRIDENTADVENTURES.COM ) also offers more elevated experiences such as diving out of a helicopter directly into the water with your gear on—if you really want that full Navy SEAL experience.
LIVE OUT YOUR MAGNUM P.I. FANTASY There are quite a few helicopter options on the island, but none can compare to the Magnum P.I. Experience provided by Paradise Helicopters (PARADISECOPTERS.COM/TOURS/OAHU). Covering the island from above, the Magnum Experience O’ahu helicopter tour will show you all the island’s highlights. See the North Shore, Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, fly over Waikiki, and more. Did I mention this is all done in a doors-off helicopter that looks exactly like the Magnum P.I. chopper? If you’re not really into Magnum P.I., other helicopter options and tours are available. Paradise Helicopters is the only green helicopter company in Hawaii and donates $6 of each booking to plant trees throughout the state.
PLANT A LEGACY + RIDE INTO THE SUNSET A unique experience on O’ahu is a visit to Gunstock Ranch (GUNSTOCKRANCH.COM), which offer various options and packages. One of the most popular is the two-and-a-halfhour Horseback Planter’s Experience, in which you embark on a guided horseback tour that travels up the beautiful mountainside trails, offering stunning views of the ocean, coastline, and hills and valley of the Koolau Mountains. On the way back, you will descend into the Hawaiian Legacy Forest, where you will be able to select your own Legacy Tree that you will personally plant and dedicate. The trees are tracked via radio-frequency identification technology, and you are sensimag.com MAY 2019 41

provided with a certificate of planting that enables you to track your tree’s growth. Gunstock Ranch also partners with Paradise Helicopters so that guests who want to do both can incorporate a stop at Gunstock into their flight plan.
#RESORTLIFE After your adventures, there’s an incredible resort waiting for you to enjoy. The Four Seasons Resort O’ahu at Ko Olina sits on O’ahu’s wild and rugged western coast, where vast ocean views and lively pools and lagoons provide the setting for an unforgettable resort adventure. Guest rooms and suites provide some of the most coveted views of the island and come with all the modern comforts that you never knew you needed, like an in-room iPad for your use during your stay (used to order room service). The resort is also home to Mina’s Fish House by acclaimed Chef Michael Mina. The signature line-to-table restaurant has a menu that features locally caught whole fish and local produce. Spend some time with the in-house fish sommeliers to learn more about the fresh catch for that day. The Four Seasons Resort (FOURSEASONS.COM/OAHU ) O’ahu at Ko Olina is more than happy to help arrange any of the above experiences during your stay at the resort. You can also rest assured that if you want to modify or combine any of the experiences, they will happily make it happen.
STAYCATION ABROAD
The Four Seasons, O’ahu offers additional localized experiences. ACTIVITIES • Ko Olina Golf Club • Sunset cruises • Paddleboarding • Deep-sea fishing
