WHAT’S UP WHAT’S NEXT

editor’s

NOTE

We’re hurtling into the holidays, then

straight on into a new decade, a second coming of the Roaring Twenties—hopefully not followed by a major market crash a decade from now, but let’s not get that far ahead of ourselves. We’ll focus instead on what’s just ahead. On your end, dear reader, you’ve got a great magazine in your hands, with a range of topics covering the gamut of this month’s Life + Style theme. If you only read one piece in this issue, make it “Single, Not Sorry,” our editor-at-large Robyn Griggs Lawrence’s feature on the rising number of adults choosing to remain uncoupled—a cultural commentary on our times. On Sensi’s end, our team is eyeball-deep in the December magazines, which I can’t wait for you to get your hands on next month. We’re rolling out a full redesign of the mag, revamping everything cover to cover. And I do mean everything—even the Sensi logo you know and trust is being updated to fit an evolved brand and an elevated aesthetic. Which means next month, you’ll need to be on the lookout for a magazine with an oversized S in the upper left corner of the cover. That’ll be us. New logo, who dis? While the look of the entire mag is changing, Sensi’s purpose and values are not. A community-minded brand, Sensi Media publishes city lifestyle magazines every month, covering markets like Southern Colorado. Sensi is all about progression and connection, engaging readers with a blend of in-depth reporting, commentary, and cultural coverage—wellness, health, arts, design, travel, business, and beyond. That won’t change. What will change is how all that info is presented. For the redesign, we’ve stripped the magazine back to its key components—the great content—and built up a simplified, compelling magazine that’s easier to read, more fun to make, and delivers even more info each month. You’re going to love it, so keep an eye out for the super Sensi “S” starting in December. As for now, you’ll find a whole lot to love in this issue.

Sensibilities

What matters this month. 1) Like Mama used to make Fact: No stuffing will ever compare to your mom’s. Except my mom’s. My mom’s was the best. Fact. 2) Alt Lifestyle Instead of stuffing a turkey, why not stuff some turkey into a tortilla, then top it with cranberry salsa? It’s an easy twist on Thanksgiving, as long as you follow it up with pumpkin pie. Without the pie, it’s not Thanksgiving, it’s just Taco Thursday, and no one is putting that on a T-shirt. 3) Life-Changing + Budget-saving If you’re a reader—and I know you are; you’re reading this right now—you’ve got to download Libby. The free app connects you to your local library so you can borrow e-books, audiobooks, and magazines wherever you are. 4) Not Not True I heard somewhere that if you hug a palm tree, someone in a place where palm trees don’t grow gets their wings? Or maybe they just start thinking about getting on an aircraft and winging it to a tropical locale—gotta use up those vacation days before 2020, after all. 5) Fan of Fronds If you spot a palm-tree-hugger in the act this month (portrait-mode selfies count), tag @SENSIMAGAZINE and @STEPHWILLL for a chance to be featured in an upcoming issue. –Stephanie Wilson

A Female Lens

Rocky Mountain Women’s Festival explores female sexuality, terror in the Jim Crow South, and gender creativity. Some 40 films celebrating the drive, spirit, and diversity of women will be screened at five venues across the Colorado College campus during the 32nd annual Rocky Mountain Women’s Film Festival, November 15–17. An opening night gala at the Cornerstone Arts Center will kick off the longest-running women’s film festival in North America, followed by two days of documentaries and narratives, features, and shorts, often followed by Q&As with guest filmmakers from across the country. This year’s films include #Female Pleasure, a plea for female sexuality in the twenty-first century; A Normal Girl, the story of intersex activist Pidgeon Pagonis; An Act of Terror, the true story of a 16-year-old African American girl accused of murder in the Jim Crow South; and Beauty, exploring the lives of five gender-creative kids. Donna Guthrie and Jere Martin started the Rocky Mountain Women’s Film Festival after a trip to the Telluride Film Festival in 1987. “Our intention was to expand people’s consciousness, including our own, and continue to grow wiser about all the important issues facing us in this complex world of special interests and the deft marketing of viewpoints connected to consumerism,” Martin says in the festival’s origin statement. –Robyn Griggs Lawrence RMWFILM.ORG

Around The Words In 30 Days

It’s National Novel Writing Month. Send your inner editor packing. Writers, open your laptops. NaNoWriMo has begun. Since 1999, this annual writeathon has caused caffeinated writers across the globe (who call themselves Wrimos) to spend the last week of November scrambling to complete the novel they started on November 1—for the sheer satisfaction and a digital diploma—even though they know the novel is going to suck. NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month, and the organization’s tagline is “the world needs your novel.” The Urban Dictionary defines it as “an especially sad disease, causing its victims to suddenly believe they can write a 50,000-word novel in a month.” NaNoWriMo began as a challenge between 21 friends in the San Francisco area and has grown to include chapters in cities around the world. Encouraging members to “write 50,000 words at 5280 feet,” Denver’s chapter has an online forum and arranges several in-person write-ins, including a getaway to Estes Park. There are nearly 800,000 active Wrimos, and nearly 370,000 novels have been completed as a result of the program. Though most Wrimos tackle novels, the rules have become a little more fluid over the years, and certain people—referred to as rebels—are taking on memoirs and non-fiction as well. “November is the perfect time to practice turning off your inner editor (that annoying voice that questions every word you write while you’re still writing) and let your instincts run the show for a bit,” 13-year Wrimo Naomi Nakashima writes on NaNoWriMo’s blog. “See what comes from that amazing mind of yours.” –RGL DENVERNANO.COM

Vape Break?

If the news about vaping dangers has you considering a little time off from your pen, you can find plenty of discreet and smokeless ways to ingest cannabinoids.

RE S OU RC E M E D IC A L C E NT E R Dr. Sarah Cohen , MD

INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE + MEDICAL CANNABIS CONSULTATIONS We are devoted to the integrative model of medicine, which thoughtfully combines conventional medicine with time-honored healing wisdom and herbalism. Beverages Cannabis-infused soda, beer, coffee, tea, and other beverages made with water-soluble cannabinoids are available with varying amounts of THC and CBD. They take effect in about 15 minutes.

Edibles via the digestive system. (Chocolate and gummies are most popular, but anything can be infused.) Effects can be stronger and delayed, taking up to two hours to kick in.

Pills Capsules filled with cannabis concentrate oil go through the digestive system and can take 45 minutes to two hours to kick in.

Powders Nano-technology has made it possible for cannabinoids and water to mix, and that’s a game changer. Simply dissolve a packet of THC or CBD powder into any beverage or stir into any recipe for effects in about 20 minutes.

Sublinguals Dissolvable strips, sprays, lozenges, gum, and tinctures are absorbed into your mouth’s many mucous membranes. They take effect faster than edibles but not as immediately as smoking or vaping.

Topicals Creams, balms, and skin patches penetrate the skin with cannabinoids to reduce localized pain and inflammation without psychoactive effects. They take effect within two hours of application, sometimes immediately.

For The Drinker

No one is judging you; learn all you can. Gin, tequila, bourbon, whiskey, mezcal, vodka, and a dozen other spirits can get a tad cumbersome when figuring out what you feel like drinking and how you want to proceed once you commit to a decision. The vast array of brands from small batch to big names can make you feel like you’re cramming for a trig test with only three minutes to study. Thankfully help is on the way—or rather, it’s readily available. The A-to-Z of all things… is your handy hardcover guide to just about everything that has to do with alcohol. The Gin Dictionary begins with using juniper berries and making the perfect gin and tonic; the Whisky Dictionary tells you the history and heritage of whisky, including explaining why, in the United States, we spell whiskey with an “e.” The Tequila Dictionary breaks down tequila, agave, and mezcal spirits without making you feel like you’ve just been handed a dunce cap. The entire series, published by Octopus Books, will educate you and get you well on your way to a happy cocktail. Check out their other books, such as Fine & Classic Cocktails, The Bourbon Bible, The World Atlas of Gin, SIP: 100 Gin Cocktails, and several fascinating cookbooks, including One Pot Feeds All, Happy Curry, and Gifts From the Modern Larder. –DG OCTOPUSBOOKS.CO.UK

RIGHTING WRONGS It’s time for the NFL to abandon its archaic policy toward CBD.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has given the league the green light. Team physicians, athletic trainers, and medical experts can now convene to examine alternatives for improving health in the wake of current and retired football players suffering from opioid addictions due to misguided pain management. Sadly, the NFL’s chief medical officer doesn’t feel the science supports the use of cannabis as an alternative to pain management, and therefore the NFL continues to ban its use. The NFL is simply wrong.

SEVERAL FORMER NFL PLAYERS HAVE COME OUT PUBLICLY TO ENDORSE CANNABIS AS A SAFE ALTERNATIVE TO ADDICTIVE OPIOIDS.

Recipe for Mindful Baking

Jen Bush, pastry chef and founder of Lucky’s Bakehouse and Creamery in Boulder, shares this gluten-free cake recipe.

Gluten-Free Chocolate Cake INGREDIENTS For the Cake

• 6 oz unsalted butter, room temperature • ¼ cup granulated cane sugar • 1 cup almond paste • 4 eggs • ½ cup Black Onyx cocoa powder (or any high-quality unsweetened cocoa powder) • Slivered almonds for garnish For the Glaze

• ½ cup heavy cream • 2 tbsp honey • 1 tsp instant coffee • 8 oz semi-sweet or bittersweet chocolate

INSTRUCTIONS

STEP 1: Cream the almond paste in a stand mixer until all the

clumps are broken up. STEP 2: Stream in the sugar and continue mixing for one minute, until the mixture is sand textured. STEP 3: Add butter little by little, then add eggs one by one until mixture is smooth. STEP 4: Sift cocoa to remove lumps and add to mixture. Mix until combined. Remember to scrape sides of bowl. STEP 5: Line a 9-inch cake pan with parchment paper or use nonstick spray. Scrape mixture into pan and bake at 325º F for 20 to 25 minutes, until cake is firm to the touch. STEP 6: Let cool completely before inverting on a plate. STEP 7: To make the glaze, gently heat cream, coffee and honey. Pour over chocolate and whisk until combined. STEP 8: Pour warm glaze over cake; decorate with slivered almonds. Makes one 9-inch cake.

FOOD HALL CRAWL Upending corporate homogenization with Nashville hot chicken and Brooklyn egg creams.

Food halls are being called the new food truck (without the elements), and they’re Denver’s fastest-growing culinary trend. Multi-counter eateries are popping up around the city and all along the Front Range in new neighborhoods (RiNo is overrun with them), offering old favorites and innovative cuisine from star-power chefs and chefs-to-watch. Since Colorado’s first food hall, The Source, opened in Denver in 2013, at least one more has opened in the state every year. There are nine in Denver and 12 along the Front Range—and a handful more are opening this year. In October, developers unveiled plans for Junction Food & Drink, a 12,000-square-foot hall opening at I-25 and Colorado Boulevard in the spring. Diners around the country are embracing food halls, which have been around since Grand Central Market opened in Los Angeles in 1917, but they never really caught on until about six or seven years ago. The number of food halls nationwide has tripled in the past five years and doubled to more than 200 since 2016, according to Cushman & Wakefield, and is expected to more than double again to 450 by 2020. Ken Albala, a University of the Pacific food historian, says people love food halls for the old-fashioned interaction with mom-and-pop vendors. “People are generally fed up with American culture writ large, which is corporate and absurdly homogenized,” Albala told Vox. “Today you can go to a Whole Foods anywhere in the country, and it’s exactly the same. Food halls give people a sense of place in a country that’s increasingly felt uprooted and lost.” 54 NOVEMBER 2019 Denver // Boulder

BALANCE LIKE A BOSS Q + A with BET Network’s Senior Vice President of Ad Sales, Kim Lewis. In a fast-paced digital world, maintaining life/work balance can be as fragile as balancing on a strip of dental floss. For one woman, striking that balance has given her the tools and the footing to become a leader of industry. In the early 1980s, Black Entertainment Television Network (BETN) was the first black-controlled TV company to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange and the first network devoted to the African American audience. That is when advertising executive Kim Lewis started a journey that would inevitably lead to her current role as senior vice president of Midwest and West Coast sales across all BETN platforms. A UC Berkeley graduate with a degree in Mass Communications, she would go on to propel the advertising and marketing industry ten-fold. Years of working at a network that became a driving force of diversity among television and media content, Kim Lewis is a force—and the face of grace—in an ever-evolving industry.

I was promoted to senior vice president of Midwest and West Coast sales across all BET platforms.

As a woman in a predominantly male industry, what has helped define your growth and successes? Earlier in my career, I had to spend time learning to read a room, while mastering how to be a chameleon, adapting and thriving in all environments. I knew being a successful working mom could be a major hurdle for me, but I was able to understand how I could balance both life and work. Bringing the right positive energy to work every day was an essential part of getting through difficult times along my journey. These things have been key: Staying focused on my path and having patience, while being fueled with a powerful voice. Being prepared while constantly learning, reinventing, redefining, developing and fine tuning skills as a leader. And more importantly, listening, and being acutely aware of the environment around me, and then reacting strategically no matter who was in the room.

What advice would you offer to younger generations of women looking to follow in your footsteps and maintain a strong work/life balance? In order to balance it all, manage yourself, your family, and your career, your personal foundation must be strong. That foundation is rooted in your faith and spirituality, a healthy

Lewis has gone on to accomplish an impressive amount of success in her 27 years of working in the advertising industry. She manages $125 million of ad revenue each year for BETN. Balancing life as an ad exec, wife, and mother, she is equally devoted to all three roles and has managed to find balance, allowing her to thrive personally, spiritually, and professionally. Having worked with Lewis for just over five years at BETN as an advertising coordinator, I still apply much of what I learned working alongside her—and being mentored by her—all those years ago, in my day-to-day. She is a force of innovative strategy and media savvy, and she has a poise and style that is eloquent and admirable.

How did you first start in broadcast media? I began my career as an account executive for BET. I opened the Los Angeles office for BET’s publication YSB Magazine. I became the director of corporate media sales for the entire publication division and then later became the director of West Coast media sales for BET. From there I went on to be named vice president of BET West Coast sales, and finally sensimag.com NOVEMBER 2019 83

Relationship Development and Growing Your Network: Building Strong relationships is essential in your career path. In order to keep your network strong, it is all about the relationships you create and foster. Katheryn Langelier, one of the badass women behind Free Fire Cider, puts her own spin on a decades-old DIY recipe with Herbal Revolution’s Fire Tonic, a surefire way to blast out the bad stuff while reaping the goodness of plants like ginger, horseradish, turmeric, burdock, and dandelion. I enjoy this as a shot and mixed with olive oil as a salad dressing. I also enjoy watching people’s faces as they take their first sips of fire cider. Break out the cameras; you’ll want to document this.

ARIEL’S HONEY INFUSIONS IMMUNE BUZZER HONEY, $10

@ARIELS_HONEY_INFUSIONS

My favorite food is garlic. I’m always trying to find new ways to enjoy it. Ariel’s Honey Infusions changed the garlic game for me. After I tried a small sample of this honey at a local health food store, I immediately bought a jar so I could shamelessly eat a whole spoonful. This honey is the perfect treat for immune system-boosting season: local honey, garlic, ginger, and lemon combine for the ultimate garlic lover’s experience. Bonus: a spoonful gives you a great excuse not to get wrapped up in a conversation when you’re not really feeling it. Garlic is not just for keeping the vampires away.

We’re not crafty people, so this plan stretches us way outside our comfort zones, and we can’t promise that the results will be anything but cringeworthy. As someone with awful handwriting and the fine-motor skills of a horse (I mean, imagine trying to knit with hooves), I am entirely aware that whatever I craft might end up being the adult equivalent of the crayon drawings “proud” parents display on their fridges. But I won’t let that stop me from trying. Our mission of making has a lot of purposes and benefits: The gifts we create will be personal and one of a kind. What better to give to someone who has everything. We’re stepping away from mindless consumerism. Our crafting adventures are a way to connect with my sister during shared activities. We’ll learn something new while having fun and maybe discover hidden talents or unlock new passions. According to a study published in the journal Emotion, experiential purchases (and crafting classes fall into the “experiential consumption” category) inspire more gratitude than material purchases. Plus, thinking about the experiences leads to more subsequent altruistic behavior than thinking about possessions. The study concludes that people are more grateful for what they’ve done than for what they have. So really, our gift-making is a gift for ourselves. It can also help us deal with the pressure of the busy season. Studies have found that crafting is a stress-relieving, mood-boosting, sadness-busting way to increase happiness, in part because it is an exercise in mindfulness. A survey of knitters published in The British Journal of Occupational Ther-

apy concluded that knitting made people feel happier—even those suffering from clinical depression. Another study, sponsored by the American Home Sewing & Craft Association, found that sewing helps people relax so much it even lowers their heart rates.

More artsy than crafty? Here are 4 #aesthetic gifts you don’t have to make.

If you’re concerned that the people on your list may not be into something you make for them, there’s some science to disprove that theory. In an opinion piece for Inter Press Service, demographer Joseph Chamie, former director of the United Nations Population Division, calls this trend “a significant global demographic change having far-reaching consequences yet receiving scant attention.” He predicts single-person households will continue to grow exponentially throughout the world, increasing global demand for housing, transportation, natural resources, and energy. “People across the world are bucking the stigma of living alone and embracing independent lifestyles,” Euromonitor International’s “Top 10 Global Consumer Trends 2019” reports. Sociologist Eric Klinenberg told the Christian Sci-

ence Monitor the shift is “the greatest social change of the last 60 years that we haven’t already named and identified.” In “Make Way for the Single Age,” J Walter Thompson calls it “a paradigm shift in adulthood uncoupled … a natural evolution alongside job hopping, coliving, sexual openness, digital connection, and a nomadic workforce.”

“I MADE THESE CHOICES” Singledom is a choice that 44-year-old Brian Gross, who has owned BSG PR since 2001, made deliberately. A serial monogamist for many years, he nearly got married once

In Canada, where 28 percent of people live alone, one-person households are now the most common. Living alone has grown fastest among 35- to 64-year-olds. In South Korea, unmarried women between 30 and 34 have jumped from 1.4 percent of the population in 1970 to 30 percent today. Young Koreans are called the “sampo” (“giving up on three”) generation because they’re not interested in dating, marriage, and children. Weight comes on like a leech attaching to your flesh in muddy waters, and it takes years and years of angsty gym-going and excruciating yoga practice and diet change to drop a single pound. on women’s ability to lose weight in their 40s (way more studies than are done on helping us through menopause), it’s tough, yet gaining weight is like a cage fight. It comes quick and strong, and it will knock you on your ass. The plus side is you’ll have extra cushion for the fall. “The biggest culprit behind your body’s changes after 40? Hormones,” says Alyssa Dweck, MD, gynecologist and assistant clinical professor at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. “This fluctuation in hormones causes a cascade of changes, from decreased bone density and lean muscle mass to lower sex drive and mood changes.” Let’s clear this up right now. Another issue arose this year over law enforcement and cannabis’ unique odor. There is an exception that allows police to search a motor vehicle without a search warrant by claiming they smell marijuana. Several cases are now challenging this smoking gun. A recent court of appeals ruling in Maryland found that police searches of vehicles that smelled like cannabis were no longer appropriate and that odor does not grant officers probable cause to conduct a search. In Pennsylvania, where medical marijuana is legal, a court said the same thing. A Bronx judge went even further and said that police reports on marijuana smell happen too often to be credible. “The time has come to reject the canard of marijuana emanating from nearly every vehi-

Business at the boutique has been booming this year, according to general manager Sarah Dougherty-Altieri, tending to be strongest beginning in late April with a bit of a slowdown after Labor Day. As with many of the dispensaries in the state, much of Groundswell’s steady customers are the baby boomer crowd attracted to the cool, calm look and feel of this facility designed by Christian Butler of Studio Limited using a reclaimed, pine-beetle-kill motif. But the boutique also serves neighborhood regulars— which is about 20 percent of the customer base—and millennials who are generally visitors from other states. “It’s been great,” Dougherty-Altieri says. “But this has been one year that has been different for many licensed facilities because a lot of other states are selling product now as well, with increased competition for dispensaries and other tourist attractions.” sensimag.com NOVEMBER 2019 131

NOW STREAMING: GANJA YOGA The patron saint of Ganja Yoga shares her recipe for wellness with the masses. Know your audience. For years, Dee Dussault worked the timeless mantra to build a loyal following for her beloved Ganja Yoga classes in San Francisco. Though a practitioner of yoga since age 15, Dussault took many years to develop a positive relationship with cannabis. “I could quiet my mind in ways I had never before been able to do, despite my many years on the mat,” writes Dussault in Ganja Yoga: A Practical Guide to Conscious Relaxation, Soothing Pain Relief, and Enlightened Self-Discovery, published in 2017 by Harper Collins. Now, Dussault is taking Ganja Yoga into homes across the country with the release of online Ganja Yoga classes this December. “If you’re not sure you can do it, know that I’ve taught ganja yoga to an 80-year-old MS patient in a wheelchair, a man recovering from a 10-year coma, veterans, and many inflexible people who claimed they couldn’t ‘do yoga,’”
