As I put this issue together, I found myself asking deeper serve not just our industry, but how to best serve our communities. With so many opportunities to show a little civic pride, utilize this month to volunteer and do something kind for a stranger. And take time to appreciate those who make this city great. As a native Angeleno, I’ve always pictured Los Angeles as a mixed up being that leans toward both having an insatiable appetite for chaos and an affinity for love, passion, and dream-making. Los Angeles always has embodied a female spirit, and once you’ve spent your life here, watching the rises and falls of various

are celebrating togetherness and gratitude; and it’s a pivotal time when the holidays—whether we want to embrace them or not—have officially arrived. As you thumb through the pages of this month’s issue, you may learn about females leading the way in media and how to give your canine some insightful natural healing, take a chance on some new products, embrace singledom and independence, plan a trip to the snow, or educate yourself on cannabis resources. Manet and Modern Beauty A R T A P P R E C I AT I O N

The Getty Museum // Now Through January 2020 Art is one of those misunderstood wonders in life. Whether you know the names of every surrealist, impressionist, or contemporary artist, art is a culmination of all things deemed necessary in life: math, science, problem solving, letting go, passion, rule breaking, and beauty. Édouard Manet knew of art’s virtue better than most. During the 1860s, he was known as a scandalous and provocative artist. Manet’s work chronicled the life of Paris at its height. From fashionably feminine to questionably ostentatious, Manet’s work is largely known for work he produced during his most prominent years. However, it is his final years, from 1876 to 1893, through his sketches, pastels on canvas, watercolors, and oil paintings, as well as the letter writing he did during his most isolated time, that tell a far more textured tale. As Manet battled gangrene and paralysis in his leg, his life was inevitably cut short at the age of 51. The final 17 years of his creations would reveal the deepest aptitude he possessed for translating narratives of a great many subjects, from his wife, local prostitutes, dear friends, his favorite cat, strangers, or simply nature as is seen in the pieces he produced while on forced rest in the outskirts of Paris at Bellevue. The exhibition features Jeanne—part of his incomplete Four Seasons series—Boating, The Café-Concert, Plum Brandy, and Portrait of Antonin Proust Study, along with several newly acquired pieces, from original letters on stationary he painted to nudes and portraits. In the city of Los Angeles, there is no shortage of hidden finds and culinary masterpieces, and The Dining Dolls revel in the element of surprise. “Some of our favorite finds would have to be the unexpected ones. When we first moved to Los Angeles, we were in search of Middle Eastern food and stumbled upon a totally unassuming place next to a gas station called Marouch. Owned and operated by a husband-and-wife team who have been cooking Lebanese food all their lives. The food was so fresh and delicious and it came in abundance. We felt like we were dining at a family supper. Definitely one of our favorite hidden gems in LA.” Family is something the sisters value above all else. Garofano, a wife and mother of two, believes sharing the fun in the kitchen is joyous and should be a family affair. “I love baking with my kids because kids love desserts! They love watching the process, helping and of course tasting. We believe it’s really fun and important to introduce children

to good food and cooking at a young age.” When asked what is essential to have in your kitchen, Garofano says, “Salt. Also garlic, espelette pepper, butter, and fresh herbs. You can make just about anything after a run to the farmers market if you have these pantry staples.”

Spirit of choice? Stephanie is a champagne and rosé kind of girl, and Lula likes well-balanced, interesting cocktails. Guilty pleasure? Sweets. We both have the biggest sweet tooth and we’d never turn down a dessert.

The first meal that really changed the game for them was an evening in Las Vegas, doing a three-Michelin-star tasting at Joël Robuchon. Garofano recalls, “It was revolutionary. We learned so much from that experience, discovering how French cuisine is nothing short of an art form. It was the highest level of perfection, dedication, and talent. And specifically how each bite within that atmosphere immersed us in a world of extravagance and opulence like no other. It was euphoric and thrilling. It was ever-changing and new yet nostalgic all at the same time. It was one experience we’ll never forget, and certainly one that has shaped our culinary path.” sensimag.com NOVEMBER 2019 19

20 NOVEMBER 2019 Los Angeles

In addition to making food a family event, the tremendous culinary talent in LA and its devotion to quality, locally sourced produce and ingredients, supporting local farmers, and the curious innovation inspires them most. “It’s very easy to get inspired in Los Angeles because the talent and creativity here is endless,” says Farrell. “We love getting so overcome by a meal that it changes the way we think about food in terms of concept, taste, and technique; or going to the farmers market and finding fresh beautiful produce to cook with on a whim.” And with 130 farmers markets in Los Angeles County, the options for fresh ingredients seem infinite. Food has always been a great unifier, but dining in Los Angeles is a gateway to the world, in the most exquisite and immersive way. From chefs who don’t take guests’ palates for granted to mom-and-pop shops to hole-inthe-wall rarities, eating is an adventure. It also happens to be incredibly photogenic. That’s where Garofano’s other talent comes into play. “I have always been artistic and creative so it was a natural transition to take on photography as a medium. I love finding the right angles to showcase food in the best light and enjoy editing photos to my aesthetic.” The Dining Dolls have a powerful presence on Instagram as foodies and home cooks, have appeared on several shows, and partnered with multiple local restaurants and influencers including KTLA 5, @KOIRESTAURANT .

and

When asked what they would plan should they be given three days to eat their way through LA, the sisters replied, “We’d start in downtown LA—where we live—with breakfast at Wexler’s Deli, then lunch at Orsa & Winston, a coffee break at Verve, and dinner at Nightshade. The following day we’d have breakfast at Bon Temps, a coffee break at All Time, lunch at The Sycamore Kitchen, and dinner at Republique. The last day, we’d make it to the west side with breakfast at The Rose Venice, lunch at Gjusta, a cocktail at Élephante, and dinner at Dialogue.” As for what’s next for The Dining Dolls, “Our plan is to expand our reach and connect with our followers on more levels including doing more videos and shows. We also want to expand our brand by creating food-related products designed by us, as well as making a cookbook with our own original recipes.” @THEDININGDOLLS sensimag.com NOVEMBER 2019 21

This has all led to a rise in what more serious folks call the “humanization of pets.” Sounds ominous. But it indicates how much our lives and our pets’ lives are intertwined—and therefore following the same trends. And what’s trendier or more millennial than wellness, wellness everywhere? In 1979, veteran journalist Dan Rather quipped during an episode of 60 Minutes, “Wellness…that’s a word you don’t hear every day.” Fast forward 40 years, and we’re hearing the word so much every day it’s almost lost all meaning. The fresh “pet wellness” phrase could mean pets are doing well overall or it could mean pets are judging you for not drinking kombucha. Don’t worry, dogs don’t judge. But they are getting more probiotics in their diets, just not from kombucha. Probiotics in pet foods sales grew by 139 percent last year, according to the Nielsen market report, “Trends in Pet Care Mirror Those of Pet Owners.” We eat super foods; our dogs eat super foods. We take CBD; our pups take CBD. We get massages; our dogs get massages. We have fitness studios where you can work out with your dog, acupuncture for pets, doggy day spas with swimming pools you can rent out for puppy parties.

BALANCE LIKE A BOSS Q + A with BET Network’s Senior Vice President of Ad Sales, Kim Lewis. In a fast-paced digital world, maintaining life/work balance can be as fragile as balancing on a strip of dental floss. For one woman, striking that balance has given her the tools and the footing to become a leader of industry. In the early 1980s, Black Entertainment Television Network (BETN) was the first black-controlled TV company to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange and the first network devoted to the African American audience. That is when advertising executive Kim Lewis started a journey that would inevitably lead to her current role as senior vice president of Midwest and West Coast sales across all BETN platforms. A UC Berkeley graduate with a degree in Mass Communications, she would go on to propel the advertising and marketing industry ten-fold. Years of working at a network that became a driving force of diversity among television and media content, Kim Lewis is a force—and the face of grace—in an ever-evolving industry.

I was promoted to senior vice president of Midwest and West Coast sales across all BET platforms.

As a woman in a predominantly male industry, what has helped define your growth and successes? Earlier in my career, I had to spend time learning to read a room, while mastering how to be a chameleon, adapting and thriving in all environments. I knew being a successful working mom could be a major hurdle for me, but I was able to understand how I could balance both life and work. Bringing the right positive energy to work every day was an essential part of getting through difficult times along my journey. These things have been key: Staying focused on my path and having patience, while being fueled with a powerful voice. Being prepared while constantly learning, reinventing, redefining, developing and fine tuning skills as a leader. And more importantly, listening, and being acutely aware of the environment around me, and then reacting strategically no matter who was in the room.

What advice would you offer to younger generations of women looking to follow in your footsteps and maintain a strong work/life balance? In order to balance it all, manage yourself, your family, and your career, your personal foundation must be strong. That foundation is rooted in your faith and spirituality, a healthy

Lewis has gone on to accomplish an impressive amount of success in her 27 years of working in the advertising industry. She manages $125 million of ad revenue each year for BETN. Balancing life as an ad exec, wife, and mother, she is equally devoted to all three roles and has managed to find balance, allowing her to thrive personally, spiritually, and professionally. Having worked with Lewis for just over five years at BETN as an advertising coordinator, I still apply much of what I learned working alongside her—and being mentored by her—all those years ago, in my day-to-day. She is a force of innovative strategy and media savvy, and she has a poise and style that is eloquent and admirable.

How did you first start in broadcast media? I began my career as an account executive for BET. I opened the Los Angeles office for BET’s publication YSB Magazine. I became the director of corporate media sales for the entire publication division and then later became the director of West Coast media sales for BET. From there I went on to be named vice president of BET West Coast sales, and finally sensimag.com NOVEMBER 2019 29

Practice, Practice, Practice: Incorporate time to practice and improve, continually learning to be better and more prepared. The Importance of Defining Your Personal Brand: Become your own “Walking Billboard” that is a true representation of your personal brand. Define yourself, instead of letting others define you. You can shape the perception of who you are and what you represent simply by defining your strengths, values, goals and personality and presenting yourself in a compelling manner. Express yourself and what you stand for to everyone you meet. Be sure to protect your brand. One wrong action or negative alignment can redefine the perception of everything you’ve created. Being Nimble: Have a flexible mindset that allows you to effectively move and shake within your career. Being a Strategic Thinker: Can you see around a corner? Always have a vision. Learn to Think on Your Feet: Always speak to the issue and facts; be organized and know the details. diet, lifestyle, and a positive mindset with gratitude and appreciation. These personal building blocks strengthen you to be the best you, and give you the ability to handle the curveballs that may simultaneously come your way. Being committed to building a strong foundation for yourself helps you stay grounded and centered—key components for success. You also have to maintain the right mindset to fuel your motivation and ensure you get what you need to get done, done. I found that if I incorporated those worlds together, they could find that symbiotic balance and I could do more. Ultimately integrating my family life into work and work into my family life allowed both environments to collide in a more balanced way.

In the present social and political climate, how do you think media can act responsibly and be a part of an inclusive conversation? Media needs to report objectively and highlight all points of view so that consumers can draw their own conclusions and opinions without the influence of the media one way or another.

What changes have you made in your own personal life to stay focused and still make time for you and your family? I am managing my time much better and being more selective on what I will or will not do within a given time period. I definitely have increased my “me” 30 NOVEMBER 2019 Los Angeles

What three women in media inspire you and why? Oprah is such a great inspiration. I truly admire her success, hard work, power, and grace. It has been amazing to watch her evolve as a talk show host to the ultimate media mogul in TV, both print and digital spaces, and film. In addition, Ava DuVernay has such a great inspirational success story from starting in PR to filmmaking and directing major motion pictures. The ability to pivot and shift from one

What recent films really resonated with you? Music? TV Series? Due to my hectic schedule, I finally had a chance to see Avengers: Endgame, and the core theme was about working together for a greater cause, bigger than all of them combined. They had a higher purpose—their “why” drove them to work together, and I certainly can relate to the power of teamwork. It’s true that together, everyone achieves more when they form a united front. I really appreciated seeing the connection they all had and their commitment to win, together.

The media is changing so much faster than ever before. The key is to stay present. If you aren’t present and don’t understand the shifts to come, you might be left behind without a chance to catch up. You must stay 10 steps ahead of the key levers driving the latest in culture and trends. That edge helps evolve and reshape you, giving you a renewed sense of focus.

What quote or saying do you think of when things get chaotic? The quote is by Confucius: “The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential…these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence.”

Another issue arose this year over law enforcement and cannabis’ unique odor. There is an exception that allows police to search a motor vehicle without a search warrant by claiming they smell marijuana. Several cases are now challenging this smoking gun. A recent court of appeals ruling in Maryland found that police searches of vehicles that smelled like cannabis were no longer appropriate and that odor does not grant officers probable cause to conduct a search. In Pennsylvania, where medical marijuana is legal, a court said the same thing. A Bronx judge went even further and said that police reports on marijuana smell happen too often to be credible. “The time has come to reject the canard of marijuana emanating from nearly every vehi-

In an opinion piece for Inter Press Service, demographer Joseph Chamie, former director of the United Nations Population Division, calls this trend “a significant global demographic change having far-reaching consequences yet receiving scant attention.” He predicts single-person households will continue to grow exponentially throughout the world, increasing global demand for housing, transportation, natural resources, and energy. “People across the world are bucking the stigma of living alone and embracing independent lifestyles,” Euromonitor International’s “Top 10 Global Consumer Trends 2019” reports. Sociologist Eric Klinenberg told the Christian Sci-

ence Monitor the shift is “the greatest social change of the last 60 years that we haven’t already named and identified.” In “Make Way for the Single Age,” J Walter Thompson calls it “a paradigm shift in adulthood uncoupled … a natural evolution alongside job hopping, coliving, sexual openness, digital connection, and a nomadic workforce.”
