Lawmakers bring the US a step closer to federal legalization. “I am the first majority leader to say it's time to end the federal prohibition on marijuana. As majority leader, I'm going to push this issue forward and make it a priority for the Senate,” Chuck Schumer, the Senate majority leader, told Congress on July 12. If Schumer’s draft bill, the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act, is accepted, policies would begin to unwind the decades-old war on drugs and offer more opportunity to businesses and individuals in states that have legalized cannabis to sell and consume without the risk of federal punishment. The bill would also try to make up for years of of restrictive federal drug policies that disproportionally affect communities of color and the poor. It calls for immediately expunging nonviolent marijuana-related arrests and convictions from federal records and would earmark new tax revenue for restorative justice programs intended to lift up communities affected by “the failed federal prohibition of cannabis.” “The suggestion that the Senate’s top leader would sponsor major decriminalization legislation would have been fantastical in the not-too-distant past,” concluded The New York Times.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis unveils a new plan to make the state the center of a US hemp economy. From declaring this past June 6-13 Hemp Week in Colorado to raising hemp flags over the state capitol building, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis has made it clear that he believes the sturdy green plant–which can be used for everything from CBD supplements to auto parts to apparel–has a future in Colorado. On August 10 at an event in Longmont along with Colorado Department of Agriculture Commissioner Kate Greenberg and officials from the U.S. The Department of Agriculture (USDA), he showed he means business when it comes to making the state the nationwide leader in returning industrial hemp to U.S. Polis announced that the USDA has approved his sweeping Hemp Management Plan, which puts the state in sync with the federal government when it comes to cultivating and manufacturing cannabis with less than 0.3 percent THC. “Colorado is the undisputed leader in the cannabis industry, and our hemp plan is a model for the country,” Gov. Polis said at the Longmont unveiling of the plan, which the state sent to the USDA for finial approval eighteen months ago. “Hemp is a versatile crop, an economic engine that supports jobs and our agriculture industry. We look forward to seeing how hemp can be further developed for fuel, food, and other uses while being a source of revenue for family farms.” The plan stresses that the future of hemp in Colorado will not just be up to the state and federal government. Local growers and manufacturers will be an important part of the process. “Importantly, the success of Colorado’s hemp program is the result not only of the robust state regulatory environment,” the plan states, “but also of the community of hemp cultivators, product manufacturers, and ancillary business operators and stakeholders who have helped drive the growth of the program.” One longtime advocate of both cannabis and farmers is a big fan of Polis’s efforts. “Colorado should be proud of leading the charge for the hemp industry,” said Willie Nelson. “There are many ways that this crop can benefit both small, family famers, and Americans in their everyday lives. From textiles and feed to fuel and plastics, hemp is the answer. I applaud Governor Polis for prioritizing hemp and I look forward to seeing the results.”

With US operations based in Colorado, British outdoor brand Rab envisions a more sustainable future.

For years, outdoor brands have made efforts to get rid of dirty manufacturing without always providing transparency behind the process. That changes now, thanks to a British company with US operations based in Boulder, Colorado. Rab’s ultra-transparent 2021 Sustainability Report, details specific ways the company is working to become net zero—canceling out all of its carbon output—by 2030. Rab is making all of its sleeping bags by hand in the United Kingdom, and using 100 percent eco-recycled materials in pieces like the the Microlight Jacket. In 2020, 34 percent of Rab’s total fabric consumption was made from recycled material—10 times more than in 2019. And Rab’s parent company, Equip, which also owns Lowe Alpine, will use a combination of scientifically proven carbon minimization production methods and the purchase of carbon credits to work toward its ambitious goal. “We are continually impressed by companies like Rab taking the steps to move toward a more sustainable business model. There are ten-minute “digital coffee” sessions and longer sessions to induce deep sleep. BrainTap is developing gamma sessions that mimic psilocybin experiences for PTSD patients, Porter says, and the Brazilian government is paying for studies to test them. Porter’s father overcame chronic alcohol abuse through the Silva Method, a meditation technique designed to push brainwave frequencies to states of enhanced awareness, and he taught Porter the

method when has was 12 years old. Eager to share it with the world, Porter began recording his own meditation sessions on cassette tapes and then, in the late 1980s, he wrote the programs BrainTap is based on as a means of stealthily walking second-time DUI offenders in Arizona through the Alcoholics Anonymous 12 steps. According to Porter, BrainTap replicates the experience of ingesting psychedelic plant medi-

cines, which slow down and strip away the reality that was predefined for us by parents, preachers, teachers, and the rest of society. “We take these ancient traditions and transform them into technology,” Porter says. “As a culture, we used to do this all the time. We’d be out hunting and gathering all day, all stressed out, then we would go back to the tribal village and get out of ourselves. We have a natural propensity for this.”

Plant medicines expand the scope of the human brain, which processes only about 5 percent of the reality that exists in the world around us, Porter says. He considers this “stepping into the quantum gap between the tick and tock of the clock.” Going on an LSD or DMT trip offers glimpses into the whole of reality—the other 95 percent, Porter says. “And they’re just as real,” he adds. “They are real because it’s all based on our sensory-based experience. But the problem is, how do we reconcile that with what we learned from our mothers, brothers, teachers, and preachers? We have to unlearn all this bad learning.” In addition to mimicking the effect of psychedelics, BrainTap can also amplify and extend them by stimulating mirror neurons. Studies have found that people who eat magic mushrooms while doing a BrainTap session can get psilocybin-like effects without psilocybin during their next four or five sessions. “We’re finding out that when technology and ancient traditions work together, it’s very powerful,” Porter says, “but it doesn’t have to be one or the other.” AU G U S T 2021

The heat of summer continues to drag on—with the air clogged with wildfire smoke making it all worse. It’s high time to escape it all a bit and get lost in a field of flowers up in Colorado’s alpine peaks. While wildflowers at lower elevations have already faded, the show is still glorious up in the alpine and a visit here gives you a bit of hope in the resilience and majesty of a troubled planet. In the Janes Peak Wilderness, about 90 minutes from downtown Denver, Heart Lake and the Crater Lakes shelter a magnificent show of floral color, highlighted by the state flower, the lovely Colorado blue columbine. Also look for bunches of mountain bluebells in the creek bottoms alongside delicate pink stalks of elephant head (yes, they look like them). Invest in a guide like Wildflowers of Colorado by Don 58
