letters the month (or sometimes two months) before they’re published. So right now, I’m writing March’s letter in February. It turns out, I’m writing it the day after the closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics, which gives me pause to ponder whether and why athletes should be allowed to use cannabis before, during, and after the Olympics. I put the question to Sensi Michigan’s publisher, Jamie Cooper, who helped me see why the International Olympic Committee should consider allowing its athletes to use cannabis during the world’s greatest sporting event.
1. Cannabis is a substance (in 17 states) legally available for use for anyone 21 and up. We don’t test people for booze, do we? 2. These athletes deal with all kinds of ailments, such as pain from injuries and stress around competing. Cannabis could help them so much. Why deny them access to a helpful medicine? 3. It’s not a performance enhancer. In fact, there is a fear it could decrease performance. I guess that depends on who you ask. 4. The World Health Organization has recommended the rescheduling of cannabis. 5. The World Anti-Doping agency says, “athletes are role models, and cannabis is a violation of the spirit of sport.” This policy pushes a false narrative of extreme cannabis-related harm and has been enforced in incredibly racist and societally damaging ways.
