That is a quote from Brené Brown, author of five number-one New York Times bestsellers, podcaster, and speaker. Even before the pandemic, self-care was a significant trend in health and wellness. There are as many definitions of “self-care” as there are people on the planet, but it can be roughly defined as individual practices that create good health and wellness, focusing on factors in your personal control. Selfcare activities have deliberate purpose and are self-initiated, all to maintain a healthy state of being. These days, self-care for many includes the use of medicinal cannabis. Acceptance is growing, but with US sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson barred from competing at the Tokyo Olympics after testing positive for THC, we have a long way to go. As reported by NBC News, Mary Pryor, co-founder of Cannaclusive (promoting inclusive representations of cannabis consumers), Richardson’s removal from Team USA represents the enduring social prejudice against cannabis and against Black people. The American Civil Liberties Union states that, despite similar usage, Black people are 3.6 times more likely than white people to be arrested for cannabis-related offenses. At the time of publication, the landscape for COVID-19 remains uncertain and sometimes volatile. The debate about vaccinations rages. The Nevada Health Association reports that the newest cases are among people who are not vaccinated. Resorts in Nevada are mandating employees show proof of vaccination or pay to be tested for COVID-19 weekly. The business model for hospitality has been altered. Job openings are numerous but companies are unable to fill positions due to low wages and lack of benefits. On the other hand, living costs are skyrocketing in the state and economists say that a person needs to earn at least $25 an hour full time to afford a “standard” two-bedroom apartment. The minimum wage in Nevada is $8.75 per hour if the employee is offered qualifying health benefits and $9.75 per hour if the employee is not provided qualifying health benefits. These facts add up to stress and fear for the future. Our goal is to share information, opinions, and different viewpoints while furthering important conversations. Together we will persevere through difficult times and continue to grow self-care and awareness around health and well-being. Thank you for reading Sensi magazine.

Flying with Nature
Jewelry designer, philanthropist, and mother Orianne Collins launched her OC Wonders Collection, part of her OC Jewellery line (oriannecollins.com) exclusively at Berger & Son Fine Jewelers at the Fashion Show in Las Vegas. The collection conjures up images of shimmering butterflies, frolicking fairies, magical flowers, and lush foliage in a blend of precious minerals. The line also represents her healing from what could have been a devastating diagnosis. Collins had a rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle until 2014 when she woke up paralyzed after a routine shoulder operation (which nicked her spinal cord) and was told she would never walk again. “I was so scared for myself and my children, and I was so upset. But while lying in bed one morning, my youngest came to me, and I decided I needed to fight for them,” she explains. After arduous work, Collins regained mobility, includ12

ing walking and taking care of herself physically. She compares her journey to being a computer that needed to be reprogrammed and is grateful for her recovery. Collins created a foundation to help others with spinal cord injuries while building her successful OC Jewellery collection. Since then she has expanded into spa products with a new full-body beauty serum, OC Magic Oil, and she is currently developing a product line for the face using precious stones, focusing on different age groups. Collins, the ex-wife of Phil Collins, still embraces the rock lifestyle. She married musician and designer Thomas Bates at the Graceland Wedding Chapel on the Strip. “We came with our best friends and wanted an Elvis Presley wedding. It was fantastic. We all had a great time,” she gushes. “I love Las Vegas.” OC Jewellery / Berger & Son / Fashion Show / 3200 Las Vegas Blvd. S., Las Vegas / bergerandson.com

Cool technology aids wellness. Appearance can be a good indication of how one feels about oneself. Instead of chasing the impossible benchmark of perfection, however, healthy respect for the body may be a better barometer for wellness. This is what sisters Sonya Moussabeck, RN, and Nourjan Bonney, CPA, believe. They co-founded Sculpt Spa, uniquely focus on a holistic approach, with a team overseen by board-certified clinical director, Daniel Inglish, DO. Sculpt Spa combines the proven results of CoolSculpting and CoolTone technology with the powerful health benefits of an infrared sauna to aid wellness. As previous patients themselves, the sisters are dedicated to providing a stress- and judgment-free environment. “Many med spas offer so many different services that they aren’t able to dedicate themselves to one practice. We are solely focused on body sculpting and are experts in the technology. We create individually tailored treatment plans to ensure our clients look and feel their absolute best,” says Moussabeck. Each private infrared suite is equipped with amenities, including smart TVs streaming Netflix and Hulu, hand weights to maximize calorie burn, and a refreshing, cold eucalyptus towel to end the session. They are also equipped with chromotherapy (color therapy) to enhance balance and stability. Sculpt Spa / 10140 W. Tropicana Ave., Las Vegas / sculptspalv.com

Psychedelic therapy is the hottest new thing in mental health treatments, predicted to grow into a $6.9 billion industry by 2027, according
to Data Bridge Market Research. But right now psychedelic therapy is only legally available in a handful of places, such as Jamaica and Oregon, and it’s prohibitively expensive for most people. serotonin, and other beta-endorphins that make you feel calm, focused, and alert while down-regulating the stress hormone cortisol. There are ten-minute “digital coffee” sessions and longer sessions to induce deep sleep. BrainTap is developing gamma sessions that mimic psilocybin experiences for PTSD patients, Porter says, and the Brazilian government is paying for studies to test them. Porter’s father overcame chronic alcohol abuse through the Silva Method, a meditation technique designed to push brainwave frequencies to states of enhanced awareness, and he taught Porter the
method when has was 12 years old. Eager to share it with the world, Porter began recording his own meditation sessions on cassette tapes and then, in the late 1980s, he wrote the programs BrainTap is based on as a means of stealthily walking second-time DUI offenders in Arizona through the Alcoholics Anonymous 12 steps. According to Porter, BrainTap replicates the experience of ingesting psychedelic plant medi-
cines, which slow down and strip away the reality that was predefined for us by parents, preachers, teachers, and the rest of society. “We take these ancient traditions and transform them into technology,” Porter says. “As a culture, we used to do this all the time. We’d be out hunting and gathering all day, all stressed out, then we would go back to the tribal village and get out of ourselves. We have a natural propensity for this.”
Plant medicines expand the scope of the human brain, which processes only about 5 percent of the reality that exists in the world around us, Porter says. He considers this “stepping into the quantum gap between the tick and tock of the clock.” Going on an LSD or DMT trip offers glimpses into the whole of reality—the other 95 percent, Porter says. “And they’re just as real,” he adds. “They are real because it’s all based on our sensory-based experience. But the problem is, how do we reconcile that with what we learned from our mothers, brothers, teachers, and preachers? We have to unlearn all this bad learning.” In addition to mimicking the effect of psychedelics, BrainTap can also amplify and extend them by stimulating mirror neurons. Studies have found that people who eat magic mushrooms while doing a BrainTap session can get psilocybin-like effects without psilocybin during their next four or five sessions. “We’re finding out that when technology and ancient traditions work together, it’s very powerful,” Porter says, “but it doesn’t have to be one or the other.” AU G U S T 2021

Do you think our dad helped him come up with the name? Gem Theater 648 Main St., Pioche gempioche.com
Rising from the Ruins Hollywood history will be honored in Pioche, Nevada.
The neon marque on the historic Gem Theater building will glow again on Main Street in rural Pioche, Nevada. This small, picturesque town clinging to the side of a mountain in Nevada’s high desert was once one of the toughest towns in the Old West. The theater (constructed in 1937) was built expressly for movies from Hollywood. Even this rough-and-tumble mining and farming town needed entertainment. The Gem Theater, originally located inside the building that is now Thompson’s Opera House, entertained audiences with thousands of movies beginning in the 1920s. When the block structure was built by Frank Thompson next door, use of the Opera House declined. It eventually closed in the 1940s, with the exception of a single-screen movie theater that continued to operate until spring 2002 when a windstorm blew the theater roof off and the 42

building suffered significant damage. Despite a repair, it was shuttered. Through dedicated efforts, the theater will be restored using a preservation treatment plan for the building funded in part by a grant from the Johanna Favrot Fund for Historic Preservation of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The marquee will be repaired (including electric work) through donor contributions and an award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Business Development Program. Now known as Nevada’s liveliest ghost town, Pioche is located 180 miles northeast of Las Vegas. Along with historic buildings (some standing since the 1870s), the town boasts a nine-hole golf course, hunting, fishing, annual events such as the Pioche Mardi Gras, and access to several scenic state parks.
