one of my favorite times of year. The foliage is at its most lush; roadside farm-stands overflow with produce. As the sun begins to set earlier, the sharp, bright days of July take on a softer edge. I love watching the sunset on warm August nights, the sky’s colorful pinks and oranges fading into navy blue. One of the reasons I like this time of year is because it’s so fleeting. By the end of the month, nights become colder. The masses of green in our neighborhood begin changing to yellow and red. Before I’ve had much time to think about it, summer is over, replaced by the crisp, cool days of fall. Like summer, Sensi’s days as a digital-only magazine are also fleeting. Beginning next month, the magazine will be returning to print, with hard copies available at local dispensaries. It’s a change we’re excited about and, hopefully, yet another sign that things are slowly getting back to normal after COVID-19’s long road. In this issue, you’ll find content ideal for reading on a late summer afternoon. In The Scene, get excited about cannabis and Major League Baseball in an article by Sensi’s executive editor, Doug Schnitzspahn. The Buzz is full of ideas for things to do and see, including the Terptown Throwdown, a two-day art and music festival celebrating New England’s cannabis culture taking place Aug. 20-21 in Spencer, Massachusetts. And in The End, you can read about Provincetown’s 19 historic dune shacks, which were once the summer homes of artists and writers including Tennessee Williams, Sinclair Lewis, and Jackson Pollack. I hope that August finds you well and that you have the opportunity to take advantage of the last, and some of the best, of New England’s summer days.

serotonin, and other beta-endorphins that make you feel calm, focused, and alert while down-regulating the stress hormone cortisol. There are ten-minute “digital coffee” sessions and longer sessions to induce deep sleep. BrainTap is developing gamma sessions that mimic psilocybin experiences for PTSD patients, Porter says, and the Brazilian government is paying for studies to test them. Porter’s father overcame chronic alcohol abuse through the Silva Method, a meditation technique designed to push brainwave frequencies to states of enhanced awareness, and he taught Porter the

method when has was 12 years old. Eager to share it with the world, Porter began recording his own meditation sessions on cassette tapes and then, in the late 1980s, he wrote the programs BrainTap is based on as a means of stealthily walking second-time DUI offenders in Arizona through the Alcoholics Anonymous 12 steps. According to Porter, BrainTap replicates the experience of ingesting psychedelic plant medi-

cines, which slow down and strip away the reality that was predefined for us by parents, preachers, teachers, and the rest of society. “We take these ancient traditions and transform them into technology,” Porter says. “As a culture, we used to do this all the time. We’d be out hunting and gathering all day, all stressed out, then we would go back to the tribal village and get out of ourselves. We have a natural propensity for this.”

Plant medicines expand the scope of the human brain, which processes only about 5 percent of the reality that exists in the world around us, Porter says. He considers this “stepping into the quantum gap between the tick and tock of the clock.” Going on an LSD or DMT trip offers glimpses into the whole of reality—the other 95 percent, Porter says. “And they’re just as real,” he adds. “They are real because it’s all based on our sensory-based experience. But the problem is, how do we reconcile that with what we learned from our mothers, brothers, teachers, and preachers? We have to unlearn all this bad learning.” In addition to mimicking the effect of psychedelics, BrainTap can also amplify and extend them by stimulating mirror neurons. Studies have found that people who eat magic mushrooms while doing a BrainTap session can get psilocybin-like effects without psilocybin during their next four or five sessions. “We’re finding out that when technology and ancient traditions work together, it’s very powerful,” Porter says, “but it doesn’t have to be one or the other.” AU G U S T 2021

High Fly Major League Baseball should embrace cannabis. TEXT DOUG SCHNITZSPAHN

The people who run Major League Baseball do not like baseball. Find me a fan who disagrees with that statement. The people who run baseball want it to be the NBA or some type of arena sport (and I say that as someone who loves the flow and beauty and raw power of the NBA; it’s just a different game). They want to end games in a hurry with the gimmick of putting a runner on second base in extra innings. They want to upend the strategy of the game by keeping pitchers who are getting lit up on the mound. These are old guys who think they know what the kids want. These are marketers who are neglecting the very essence of what makes their product so damn good. Baseball is a long, slow, then suddenly thrilling, intensely complicated love affair. It’s lyric

poetry. It’s action movies before CGI (Think: Raiders of the Lost Arc or Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid). It’s an old-time game that persists in a world of stats and deep analysis. It endures. But don’t think it’s boring or out of synch with the digital age. It is international and inclusive; the biggest sensation in the game is Japanese, and most clubhouses chatter as much in Spanish as English. It’s a game that can be broken down by new geeky analytics like barrel rate and xFIP (expected fielding independent pitching). At the same time, it gives the finger to stats over the short term—while we can place a percentage on every outcome, we can’t predict what will happen in any one at bat. There’s always the chance a light-hitting utility infielder can go deep against a Cy Young

Furthermore, cannabis is no longer listed as a banned substance by MLB, where it used to be considered in the same category as opioids and cocaine. Many baseball players are addicted to dangerous painkillers (including Los Angeles Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs who died of an overdose of drugs including oxycodone), and the league realized that legal cannabis could be a safe option for those seeking relief.

So why not let the fans enjoy it? Consuming cannabis during games would only add to spectators’ enjoyment of the sport—and it’s not as if baseball has shied away from alcohol. It’s a fine thing to enjoy a cold beer in the cheap seats, so why not a gummy? The teams would profit on the concession (and lord knows owners who seem more interested in money than winning—think the Colorado Rockies—would like that). It would bring in new fans and maybe enhance their ability to sit and enjoy the game. Sure, the stoner stigma stands in the way of main-

No matter if you agree with me on controlled, responsible, legal cannabis at baseball games or not, I do hope you go to the ballpark this year and think about it. Enjoy the passing moment of a lazy fly ball, the joy of the hero-shot home run, and learn a new stat. Think about how baseball can become a game that continues into the future, without changing what’s great about the game.
