Prima del restauro il guscio dell'uovo si presentava frantumato. Questo danno ha permesso di studiarne il contenuto e di stabilire l'esatto iter costitutivo dell'opera da parte dell'artista. L'intervento è consistito nella ricostruzione dell'involucro, particolarmente delicata a causa del contenuto mobile e pesante (il tuorlo disidratato). Si è quindi provveduto, tramite calco in cera di un uovo molto simile all'originale, alla costruzione di un nuovo supporto in carbonato di calcio, all'interno del quale inserire il tuorlo e da ricoprire all'esterno con i frammenti del guscio originale.
Prior to the conservative intervention the shell of the egg had been crushed. This damage allowed us to study the contents of the egg and verify the exact process by which the artist created the work. The conservative intervention consisted of reconstructing the shell, which was particularly delicate due to the weight and mobility of the dehydrated egg yolk it encased. Thus, by making a wax mould of an egg very similar to the original, a new support in calcium carbonate was constructed, into which the original egg yolk was inserted and onto which to the fragments of the original egg shell were affixed.

Data l’impossibilità di riassemblare tutti i frammenti agendo esclusivamente dall’interno, e dovendo poi reinserirvi il contenuto, è necessario ricorrere a un nuovo supporto su cui ricollocare tutti i singoli pezzi del guscio. Dopo aver svuotato con una siringa un uovo molto simile all’originale, vi si inietta un composto di cera e paraffina in modo che aderisca alle pareti interne del guscio. Il guscio viene poi rimosso a bisturi ottenendo un’anima in cera.
Given the impossible task of reassembling all of the fragments working from the inside, as well as the limitation of having to re-insert the contents of the original egg, it was decided to create a new support on which to position the individual fragments of the original shell. Having emptied the contents of an egg very similar to that of the original using a syringe, a compound of wax and paraffin was injected into the new egg so that it adhered to the internal walls of the shell. The shell itself was then removed using scalpels in order to obtain a wax core.
Sull’uovo di cera viene steso uno strato di carbonato di calcio (la stessa materia di cui è compostoli guscio) sul quale vengono fatte le dovute correzioni alla curvatura posizionandovi sopra mano a mano i singoli frammenti. Esponendo l’uovo “copia” a calore, viene fatta defluire la cera da due piccoli fori.
A layer of calcium carbonate was then applied to the wax egg (the same constituent material of egg shell) on which the necessary correction to the curving of the shell were made, and onto which the single fragments were gradually positioned. Exposing the “copied” egg to heat, the wax core was melted out through two small holes.

Some fragments were reassembled from the inside by means of the application of non-woven fabric.
L’uovo “copia” viene sezionato per porre all’interno il contenuto dell’uovo originale, saldando successivamente le due metà. Tutti i frammenti vengono ricollocati sull’anima predisposta e saldati tra loro. Le piccole lacune sono reintegrate strutturalemente e intonate ad acquerello.
The “copied” egg was then cut in section in order to reinsert the contents of the original egg, and subsequently, the two halves were joined. All of the fragments were re-positioned and joined together on the wax core**. Small losses in the shell were structurally re-integrated and coloured using watercolour paint.
L’opera, a restauro ultimato, è ricollocata nella bambagia all’interno della scatola originale.
Once the conservative treatment was concluded, the work was repositioned in the cotton wool casing within its original wooden box.
