mbattey@slhsongaurd.com Let us welcome Queen Emily Oliver, the very first queen of SLHS and hopefully the first of many queens at SLHS. She has gone through many obstacles in her life, not only due to her becoming the Queen, but also because she is the ASB President. Being both of these things, her schedule must be very full with the jobs and activities she needs to accomplish through Spanaway Lake. When Emily was asked about how it felt being the first queen, she responded, “It’s really a huge honor and it can’t be put into words, It’s busy but it’s the best thing to ever happen to me”. Indeed, it is a huge honor to be the very first Queen of SLHS in so long. Having the title of Daffodil Queen can mean a lot to whomever wins, but it also represents the school because of how it shows our ability to accomplish great heights. Emily Oliver was asked what was going on through her head during the

coronation. “I was thinking that I was proud of all the other princesses, because we were able to grow close and I was happy to see them shine, and I was completely awestruck when I had won Daffodil Queen.” All of SLHS is proud of the new Daffodil Queen Emily Oliver, because she has begun a change for SLHS for the days to come, and every day she is working hard to make the school a fun and happy place, where every student has something to look forward to, thus showing us that she has a bright future ahead of her. The Princesses didn’t have any etiquette classes, but instead they were taught lessons on how to act towards kids and with kids. The Princesses also had mandatory attendances where they would to go to a bunch of events called “Full Courts”; some included going to the the State Capital building and also the yacht club. Emily was asked how all of this could affect her in the future. “It has definitely changed my outlook on my career and it has also changed the

perspective of which I see the community and the services people do for it.” Emily Oliver is someone of many talents, she is capable of giving speeches that cause an uprise in the bleachers and evokes queenly grace. She also has organized and watched over many events of all kinds to make sure that everything is going smoothly and is on time. Emily’s motivation to become a princess was from Darlene McMakin; Emily thought she would be too busy to even think about being a Princess, however McMakin kept recommending it to her to see if she would like it. Next thing she knew, she was crowned a Queen. Let Queen Emily Oliver meet her goals for her future and bring change wherever she goes. Long live Queen Emily!

Funny Girl’s goodbye to Spanaway Lake BY ISABEL MARTINEZ

We can do anything we want with it. We can literally do anything we want because the world is our oyster and there is nothing stopping us from being whoever we want to be. Goodbye Spanaway Lake, and thanks for the ride of a lifetime.

for shaping my writing skills and helping me keep the mess in some sort of order; Ms. Wheeler, you may not work here anymore but I still hear you teaching in the back of my head whenever I am typing; Mr. Mac, I know for sure I would not have passed math if it was not for your spectacular teaching for the past four years. There are many others that I would like to thank, but it would make this column to big for the newspaper space. We did it Seniors! The year is practically over, and a new part of life is about to begin, and guess what?

HIGH SCHOOL: I have had a lot of fun with my friends over the past few years, whether it be at sports games, the lake, or prom.

homework; no more recognizable teachers. Yes, I am ecstatic that I have made it to this point in my life, but it can be a pretty frightening thought. But then something happened; my dad took me in his arms, hugged me, and said “You can do this”. It is amazing how much four words can change your attitude, considering I have heard over thousands of them in the past four years. Yes, it has been a difficult four years; I lost my Grandmother, extended family experienced tragedy and moved in with us, and cancer found its way back into my family’s lives; but a lot of good things have happened too. My sister got married, I realized my true calling is writing, I made countless memories with friends that will forever stay with me, my brother is due to graduate Washington State University, and my family is still going strong. I think for us to really appreciate the beautiful things in life, we have to hit a few bumps in the road along the way. Though, I can say for sure, it is nothing but smooth sailing for the next few weeks seniors. Those caps and gowns are waiting patiently for graduation day, and before we know it, it will be here as quickly as the past four years went by. I want to say thanks to all my friends and teachers, you guys made High School life more fun than I could ever imagined. Thanks especially to; Mrs. Schwery,

It is odd thinking that in just a few weeks I will be graduating from High School, since it is not like that fact is a surprise. I have been waiting for this day since I was in elementary, and part of me wishes I could go right back to those days when all I had to worry about was what game I would play at recess. Now I find myself panicking about how I am going to pay for college and how I have no idea how to be an adult. Because while school teaches us Calculus, Washington State history, and how to write an amazing essay, it does not teach us how to balance check books, do taxes, budget ones income; pretty much anything involving money. Is any other Senior loosing their cool, because I am. Though it is not at all like this year was nothing but worrisome. To be honest, I have had a blast as a Senior. It really is everything a student imagines it to be; suddenly you do not just feel like a normal teen, but an adult, or more specifically an adult with responsibilities and a newfound freedom. It never fully hits you that your life is about to take a dramatic hit, but when it does, it is lethal. I remember, on a night like every other, I was heading home with my family after dinner and we were discussing my Graduation party. It was no big deal, simply a calm talk about who to invite and if it would have a theme, and then I went silent. Realizing that I would at last walk away from Spanaway Lake High School with a diploma hit me like a brick wall; an emotional brick wall. Next thing I knew, we were home and I was in hysterical tears because I finally had to grow up and be an adult. No more waking up and going to the same six classes I have had for the past year; no more second lunch with the same seven faces; no more

The Noise is Off BY REAGAN HOWELL

rhowell@slhsonguard.com The theater production “The Noise Is Off” is play inside of a play. In the first act, the lights come up on the cast of a traveling drama company going through a rehearsal at about 2 in the morning. The company cast includes a drunk, an emotional stage manager, a man who gets nose bleeds when he sees violence, and a director who wishes he was working with anyone but the company actors. The end of Act One closes with the company cast finishing the rehearsal of Act One. During the intermission, the set workers literally flip the stage around to show the play backstage. Act Two opens with viewing the action behind the stage during the opening day. During Act Two we learn that Dotty, who plays the housekeeper, and Garry, who plays the estate agent, have broken up and both refuse to go on. However, Poppy, the Stage Manager, convinces them to go out, all the while stagehand Tim begins counting down time till the play starts. Though, Tim fails to inform Poppy and the call times get mixed up. The director Lloyd, who has become quite annoyed, comes backstage to figure out what’s going on and finds Brooke the actress playing a tax authority who wants to quit play. Lloyd, being trapped in a love triangle with Brooke and Poppy, tries to calm Brooke and sends Tim to get her flowers. Unfortunately, Tim ends up giving them to Poppy instead. Finally, the show starts with everybody either in a jealous rage or trying to keep thing going. However, as the play goes on we have an encounter between Dotty and Freddie, which makes Garry grab an

Their debut as romantic interests was perfect, with the audience following their side story all the way through the play. Drama Club should be proud of the performance they put on, it was one for the books.

QUESTION:Who do you want to win in the new CA:Civil War? Iron Man Captain America

PHOTOS BY HUNTER HUDGINGS.

kstory@slhsonguard.com Going to the school’s current play, I didn’t expect much. Yet, Spanaway Lake’s Drama Club surprised me. Under the direction of Chris Serface, the actors dazzled the audience with their dancing and singing. Sitting in the audience, I found myself entranced by the story of Tracy Turnblad, played by Alexis Holloman, conquering society’s shallow expectation and making way in the fight for integration. Not only did Holloman perfect the role of Tracy, but her vocals brought life to each song. Along with Holloman, was the love interest of character Link Larkin, played by Pelesasa Tiapula. Tiapula performed exceptionally well, putting passion in the character of Link Larkin. Also dazzling the stage was Motormouth Maybelle, played by Shaina Stuckey, and although she had few scenes, Stuckey made sure her character made an impact on center stage. Not only did I enjoy myself, but I found myself transported back to the ‘60s with the detailed props and costumes. Michele Graves did a wonderful job with the costume design, making the actors become one with their ‘60s characters. Standing center stage with Tracy was Velma and Amber Von Tussle, played by Shelby Poore and Hailee Ray. Poore (acting as Velma Von Tussle) embraced the devious side of her character as she strutted the stage, while Ray (acting as Amber Von Tussle) transformed into the spoiled mean girl that Amber is. I sat in the audience, but I felt as if I were on stage with these amazing actors; their performance was stellar and if I could, I would be the first in line to see it again. Another amazing performance that I have to mention is Tyler Mathews and Kayla Waycaster, who play the scandalous interracial couple Penny Pingleton and Seaweed J. Stubbs.

emergency ax and go after Freddie, who is preoccupied with a continuous nose bleed. All the while, Selsdon, a drunk who plays the burglar, tries to hide his drinks behind stage. Lloyd continues to send Tim to get flowers but finally comes back with a bush, as the florist has run out of flowers due to Tim continually returning for more. Poppy is now an emotional mess and feels neglected that Lloyd won’t talk to her. While all this is going on, we have Garry missing his cues, Dotty playing pranks on him, and Belinda, a woman who plays Freddie’s wife, trying to comforting Poppy. Belinda also attempts to keep Selsdon from going off and getting even more drunk. All this commotion of course interferes with Belinda’s own cues. At the end of Act Two, Tim is seen getting dressed in fur and sheets to play the Sheik for Freddie, since he has fainted coming off stage. Poppy finally gets Lloyd’s attention to talk, but due to her anger and irritated emotions, she yells out that she is pregnant. Lloyd, looking shocked and annoyed, calls for a blackout on stage. Act Three reveals that it’s the last show of the company’s tour. Everyone is so stressed forgetting lines, cues, and props, that the show becomes a living nightmare. Throughout this act, the play has become a madhouse and presents a broken telephone, broken doorknob on a locked door trapping Brooke inside, a sardine mess, and Freddie coming out looking like a accident victim. About halfway through Act Three, Brooke, wearing contact lenses, loses her left lense causing everyone on stage to stop moving and look for it. Freddie then breaks his arm and gets a bad hit on the head. Garry ends up falling down the stairs, passes out, and brings about Freddie getting yet another nosebleed. Finally, it’s Selsdon part to enter the scene and he surprisingly makes his entrance perfect. Unfortunately, the cast assumes he will miss his cue line, so Tim comes in through the window dressed as Selsdon. This leads to a world of confusion and

Tim ends up repeating Seldons lines. To add to the confusion, Lloyd comes in as Selsdon and repeats yet another time. Poppy, who is very pregnant, enters with a sheet over her, dressed as the Sheik. As the end draws near, Belinda tries to make it seem as if the play went the way it was planned to. The end scene consists of 3 burglars, a woman dressed in her under garments, a pregnant woman in a sheet, a very annoyed Dotty holding a plate of sardines, a man who looks like he belongs in a hospital, a very confused man with concussion, and woman in a green suit trying to look casual. This play was hilariously funny, with plot twists, romantic escapades, and nose bleeds. The audience was laughing the whole time. It was easy to see that a lot of work went into this production, and that the nine amazing actors put their heart and soul into each act. I think every thespian should see this play because it’s so relatable to what it’s really like behind stage.

JUNE 2016

mridenour@slhsonguard.com Baywatch is an upcoming action comedy film directed by Seth Gordon, based on the 90s NBC hit television series “Baywatch”. The film will revolve around the life and adventures of a team of lifeguards. This movie will star the famous David Hasselhoff, from the original “Baywatch” TV series, Zac Efron, Dwayne Johnson, Alexandra Daddario, and many others. The new movie is expected to come out May, 2017. It may seem a long ways away, but it will be worth the wait due to the series famous legacy. The 90’s TV series “Baywatch” was one of the biggest hits back in the day. The show included shark attacks, earthquakes, and an abundance of drowning people that need saving. No one can forget the most famous part in the show: each cast member dramatically running from one side of the beach to the other. There were eleven seasons filmed of this action packed series until it was taken off the air. There has been a lot of talk and excitement about the upcoming movie, one that will definitely be an eye catcher. The must see film is due to come out in May of 2017. It will be interesting to see how well the cast does and if they can hold up the expectations of fans. It is also hoped the cast can keep a taste of the original show, but add in a little bit of their own style as well. Since Pamela Anderson and David Hasselhoff will also be included in this movie, there is a lot of anticipation for them to reprise their roles as the main characters. So come on “Baywatch”, give it your best shot and see if you can top the original series.

Death of a Bachelor

BY REGAN HOWELL

BY ISABEL MARTINEZ

imartinez@slhsonguard.com Panic! At the Disco has come a long way from its original 2005 debut. P!ATD has gone from a four man troupe, to a one man band over the past years, as band members left the Panic nest to explore their own musical tones. Brendon Urie’s style of music has adapted and matured over the years, allowing for each new album to stand out and hold its own. However, Panic’s new album “Death of a Bachelor” is like nothing his fans have ever heard before. Yes, the punk rock style we know and love about P!ATD is still there, yet Urie has added new factors of music to his newest CD. In the new 11 song masterpiece, Brendon Urie has set the stage of a Broadway Musical, making more dramatic and extravagant songs. One may go as far as saying this could in fact be a Broadway Musical because of how each song paints a bigger story that morphs into the next. Each song differs from the last; “LA Devotee stands true to the upbeat tune we know and love about Panic, while “Impossible Year” is a ballad of piano notes, wind instruments, and deep vocals.

rhowell@slhsonguard.com On March 25st, 2016, “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice” came out in theaters. In just the first five days, the movie made over $500 million worldwide. Though the comic readers know that the movie is far from the original story, yet even with it’s not so good reviews, people are still lining up to see this superhero-on-superhero action movie. The controversy of who is better has been an ongoing argument that has caused all sorts of conflicts throughout the years. After talking with several people in our school, the conclusion is that Superman is the better superhero. However, Batman still has a large group of fans in our school. Some of the reasons people preferred Superman over Batman were that Superman had powers and came before Batman. People also liked Batman because he didn’t need a superpower to beat his villains, and he lived with his fears. Our well known Superman came first in 1938, being the first Action Comic and the first ever DC hero. Yet, just a year later “Batman” comics came out and equally matched Superman’s comic popularity. Through the years, Batman and Superman have both worked together and fought each other. Zack Snyder, the coveted director of Dawn of Justice, brings several talented actors to the table including Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, and Gal Gadot as the super trio. Even more surprise came when Jesse Eisenberg has crowned the villainous Lex Luthor to complete the super movie cast list. While the movie has received mixed reviews, the most excitement has come from the sneak peaks of Aquaman, the Flash, and Cyborg, which leads some to speculate that a new Justice League movie will be released. Fans hope for this to occur sometime next year.

Deadpool struts his stuff BY SIERRA GOINS

Some say the real Becky is a fashion designer named Rachel Roy who was at the center of the elevator fight last year at the Met Gala. After Beyonce released her album, Rachel Roy uploaded an instagram photo saying “Good hair don’t care”, and by then Beyhive got in formation and began swarming all over Rachel Roy’s instagram. Many fans were so furious that they even changed her encyclopedia bio claiming she died April 23, under a lemonade stand. Whatever happens to the queen, the BeeHive’s got her back. All we know is we still don’t know what’s going on; is it really true that the Carter family is separating? Is Jay-Z really cheating on the one and only Queen B? But most importantly, is Jay-Z and Rachel Roy having a thing without Beyonce knowing? The Beehive may never know.

jcastro@slhsonguard.com Beyonce has done it again! Throughout the years Beyonce has surprised us with amazing albums, you may have thought Beyonce shocked us when she dropped her album in 2013, but think again! This year Queen B stung us with her newest visual album lemonade. Beyonce was born September 4, 1981, and Knowles captured everyone’s eye when she was the lead vocalist in the R&B group “Destiny’s Child”. In 2003, she decided to start her solo career coming out with a debut album Dangerously in love, which made her the most top selling artists. By then, Knowles had the talents to create her own BeyHive. Later in the year she married the hiphop artist Jay-Z in 2008. In 2013 Beyonce dropped her self entitled album Beyonce. On April 2016, Knowles released her sixth album Lemonade. Since Queen B’s album Lemonade is rapidly hitting the charts, there has been plethora of gossip involving the album. Many artists throughout the years have taught us life lessons in their music, expressing their feelings, and giving off messages about breakups. But Mrs. Knowles may have given us too much lemonade. It’s been a year since the elevator incident at the Met Gala on May 5; an aggressive video of Beyonce’s sister, Solange Knowles, rapidly beating up Jay-Z hit the media. Everyone talked about it, although no one really knew what happened that day. But has Beyonce forgotten the past, or is Queen B ready to tell the truth? Beyonce is a powerful woman, and her lyrics say a lot, but do they say too much? In one of her newest songs “Sorry” she says a very important message that everyone has questioned: ‘’He only want me when I’m not there he better call Becky with the good hair’’. Who is this “becky”?

The new addition to the album family is one of the most popular of all, it being nominated for the most awards, next to “I Write Sins Not Tragedies”. Even more popularity has arisen from “The Emperor’s New Clothes” music video, the cinematic debut being nominated for the Rock Sound Readers Poll’s Video of the Year. This of course is no surprise, since it is some of Brendon’s best work. The video displays Urie being transformed into a demon-type being, and as the video progresses, so does his menacing and evil make-up. Not to mention the amazing camera scenes that flash back and forth to the nearing “Urie Monster”; a technique that keeps the audience at the edge of their seats. For the fans that need to experience the masterpiece in live action, Panic! At the Disco is due to visit the Marymoor Park in Redmond, on July 29th. As one devoted fan to the ever changing band, I can happily say “Death of a Bachelor” has exceeded expectation and I cannot wait to see what Urie writes up for us next.

Panic Power: Urie has kept his rock flare to his music, but the new album envoes its own character. As the album has changed, so has Urie. His new haircut and style seem to have been made for the new album. No Panic! At The Disco fan could forget his new trademake red blazer.

Beyonce’s back by popular demand BY JERDALE CASTRO

Batman vs. Superman

QUEEN B: While most of her albums are fun and upbeat, “Lemonade” is one of break-ups and sorrow. Filled with emotion, Beyonces album cover envokes an equal amount of emotion and feelings.

“Fourth wall break inside of a fourth wall break? That’s like… 16 walls!” Deadpool, the only fourth wall breaking movie we have had here in the Marvel world, and it is what the people can’t stop talking about. It was finally leaked the the long awaited film was to be released this year on February 14, yet still today people talk about how great it is. “Deadpool”, a hilarious non-heroic hero movie is just what the people have been waiting for, myself included. Ryan Reynolds the actor who play this sarcastic, hilarious, and smart-talking character has done it again, giving the Marvel fan world just what they needed to bring this year all good things. This movie is pretty self explanatory right from the start, with an interesting introduction. The actors and actress, who star in the film, start with written by “The real heroes here” and then ending with

being directed by “an overpaid tool”; you know it’s either going to make you angry or make you pee your pants. Deadpool is a party for action junkies and Ryan Reynolds lovers; this movie might just have made his career. We are all thankful for him because without his constant motivation, this movie would have never came to be. Ryan has been pushing to get this movie made for about 10 years and look at him now. His movie has made history with the sells of 132.3 million dollars within the weekend of the release, and is now to be released on DVD next week on May 10. With a rating of 8.2/10 from IMDb and a 82% from Rotten Tomatoes, this action pack marvel movie has made history and we will never let it die. In my opinion, it is a movie you will always remember no matter how you feel about the mischievous Marvel hero, one that is not exactly your run-of-the-mill superhero.

ON GUARD

There are few movies nowadays that impact you as much as the theatrical films that existed in the 70’s and 80’s. Movies like the “Back to the Future” trilogy, “Jaws”, and “The Godfather” franchise left impacted audiences filled with thrill and excitement! Yet in today’s movie world, the films most watched deal with teen pregnancy, the single life, and how to make dysfunctional families work; depressing and boring themes if you ask me. What ever happened to the thrill of a chase, or the action scenes that make you jump out of your seats? While today’s society continually gives mixed reviews on the movies played on the big screens, there was no debate about how the ever anticipated “Star Wars: Episode Seven” would be received. Hold on to your movie theater seats fellow Star Wars fans, because I have a good feeling about this. Coming from a family that loved anything and everything about Star Wars, we counted down the days until the new adventure was released to the movie theaters. There is no way to describe the feeling of sitting in those red theater chairs and impatiently waiting for the annoying movie previews to cease and allow for the main show to start; your mind begins to fill with ideas of what is to come and whether or not the movie will meet your expectations. Will I like this movie? Will J.J Abrams succeed in creating the movie rightfully upholds the “Star Wars” name? Will I be able to hold it until this 2 hour and 16 minute movie is finally complete? All these questions and more

pass through the minds of fans as we impatiently wait for the infamous title screen to finally reveal itself. And boy does that seventh title screen leave a impact. Obviously it would be extremely ridiculous for me to reveal anything about the movie, other than the fact that Abrams has in fact kept our beloved opening title. However, I can say, without a doubt in my mind, that this instalment of the “Star Wars” franchise is nothing but superb. Everything about this masterpiece is phenomenal; the action scenes, the drama, even the inevitable cliffhanger at the end. The actor list adds even more to this film, as each new character plays important and interesting parts all over the film. Even our new robot sidekick, BB-8, steals the show with his cute and feisty persona. J.J Abrams has brought together old and new factors of this Fantasy/Science fiction film we know and love and made it his own; he has created a consistent yet modern version of the Star Wars movie and made it the movie of the year. Though, this should not be a surprise to us movie reviewers, as Abrams has fabricated many awesome films such as “Super 8” and the new “Star Trek” movies. The list as to why this movie is gold could go on for days, but the factor that outweighs all of them is this: J.J Abrams has given us a movie that is multi-generational. As I sat in the Regal Movie Theater and happily awaited the movie, I realized something. I was not only surrounded by my parents and siblings, but my Grandfather, my Aunt, brother-in-law; the list is endless. A little less than 40 years ago my Grandpa was dragging my mother and aunt to the movies, claiming this new Star Wars movie had gotten good

THE FORCE: J J Abrams has taken the movie and looks of the series and kept it original, while adding his own flare.

THE DARKNESS AND THE LIGHT: While it is expected that fans would root for the Light Side, fans have felt forn Kylo Ren and his story, causing an entire fan base of the Dark Side to ensue.

When you think of all time great musicians of the late 70s through the 90s, who comes to mind? You’re probably thinking Michael Jackson, Madonna, U2, Nirvana, Guns n roses, David Bowie, Stevie Wonder; the lists goes on and on. How about the most memorable? The ones who dared to stand out no matter what the critics said, the ones that used their experience to make heart wrenching, jaw dropping and intoxicating music. Who better to do all of these things than the Prince himself. His full name was Prince Rogers Nelson. He was born in Minneapolis and fell in love with music at a young age. He even taught himself how to play the piano, guitar and drums. Both his parents were musicians and the name Prince Rogers came from his father’s stage name. He had one sister and she was also very interested in music at a young age, due to their father. “Funk machine” was the first song he ever wrote, at age 10. Sadly, this was also at that age his parents divorced. Something you might not know about him is that he played basketball. Prince was even known to play recreational basketball as an adult. In his career, he was known for his flamboyant style and presence on stage. His most famous songs are “I want to be your lover”, “1999”, “Little Red Corvette”, “When Doves Cry”, and “Let’s Go Crazy.” Prince is most known for his wide vocal range and unique touch. He will always be remembered as a great musician and the legacy he left behind.

reviews; and from there the many generations of Star Wars fans were born. Through the minds of people like George Lucas and J.J Abrams, “Star Wars” has become a global phenomenon; something that will live on through the years. This seventh instalment has every right to be called a Star Wars movie, and while I cannot force readers to see it, I highly suggest you do. Though, if you do end up seeing “The Force Awakens” and remark “ I love it!”, I’ll simply smile and say, “I know”.

STYLE IS EVERYTINHG : Prince was nothing without his famous three-eyed glasses.

Have you ever been so curious on why we had so many new security guards in the school? We know for a fact that we haven’t seen them working at Spanaway Lake before, not to mention that we know nothing about the. These new security guards might be here to keep the peace, but they are complete strangers to the students here at campus. Our first new security guard goes by the name of one Bezzell Lee. We asked him why he likes working here, and Lee replied with “I like working here because kids are great and I have had nothing but good times since i’ve been hired”. Lee thinks that the school needed more protection and he’s good with protecting because of his previous job. The Sentinel on Guard also asked him why SLHS is in need of so many guards. “We need kids to be monitored upstairs, downstairs, inside, outside, and the front of the school, so having this many will make it easier for everyone”. Mr. Lee is a great person; when’s he’s not working as a guard at Spanaway, he’s taking his daughter out to play and working out on his free time. You should introduce yourself to him and get to know him, he’s pretty cool. The other guard is Julie New. While she was asked the same questions, New replied differently from Lee. She’s worked at Bethel Middle School prior to this, and she loved it. Coincidentally, New is a graduate from Spanaway, so her attitude towards her new job is even brighter than before. “I like being back in the school, although it looks different from when I went here. I’ve always worked with kids; they have great potential that sometimes they don’t even realize. When your body is changing and your mind is growing

and all these things are happening inside your developing mind, you’ll see how powerful you are because so many kids are filled with doubt and hopelessness”. New is very excited to see how this school will turn out. Meet these security guards, don’t be scared because they won’t bite. It’s important to remember that the security guards are people too and deserve the respect we all hope to receive. Of course Spanaway Lake students should remember it never hurts to throw a “thank you” their way every now and then.

As the NBA Regular season is coming to a wrap, six awards will be handed out: “MVP”, “Defensive Player of the year”, “Sixth Man”, “Rookie of the year”, “Coach of the year” and “Most Improved Player”. MVP is definitely the most wanted award in the NBA. There is a wide variety of candidates like last years MVP Steph Curry, the Triple-Double leader Russell Westbrook, The player with the most points James Harden and other great players like Lebron James, Kevin Durant, Draymond Green, and Kawhi Leonard. Another very wanted trophy is the Defensive Player Of The Year. Kawhi Leonard is most likely the runner up for defensive player of the year, as he averages 1.8 steals a game and 1 block per game. Other candidates for Defensive Player Of The Year would be Steph Curry after he lead the league in steals, Hassan Whiteside, Draymond Green and DeAndre Jordan. The NBA most improved player of the year candidates are CJ Mccollum, after scoring only 6 points a game last year but now is scoring 20, Draymond Green, Kyle Lowry, and Reggie Jackson, Kawhi Leonard and Klay Thompson.

Rockets had a close battle with the Utah Jazz, but James Harden lead the Rockets to another playoff appearance. As everyone knows, the Eastern side of the NBA is not as strong as the West. The big three teams on the east are the Cleveland Cavaliers, Toronto Raptors, and the Miami Heat. Toronto, being the fourth seed last year, has improved, while the Heat who did not make the playoffs last year. Now in the 3rd seed, Miami improves their game, which is great for the Heat fans. Some upsets to some Bulls fan this year as they missed the 8th seed, when they were 3rd last year. The Cavs with their big three of Lebron, Kyrie, and Love are favor to go to the finals and meet with the Golden State Warriors again this year. Other teams in the playoffs are the Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics, Charlotte Hornets, Indiana Pacers, and the Detroit

Pistons. Charlotte is a big surprise this year as they were the 11th seed last year and now the 5th seed this year. They had a good off season, picking up Nick Batum and Jeremy Lin. With Kemba Walker improving his game, being their leading scorer, Charlotte has improved greatly this year. Detroit has improved also with Reggie Jackson stepping up and being one of their key players alongside with one of the best centers in the league, Andre Drummond. The Atlanta Hawks has not been as great as they were last year, from being the #1 team in the East to tieing with the 3rd seeds record of 48 and 34. The Hawks are being lead with the big three of Jeff Teague, Paul Millsap, and Al Horford, with the help with some key players like Kyle Korver, and Tim Hardaway Jr. The Indiana Pacer made the playoffs this year, now that Paul George (PG13) is back from his broken ankle, also getting Myles Turner with the 11th pick in the 2016 draft. Boston Celtics have improved, and will continue too in the upcoming years. They have a young team with Marcus Smart, Avery Bradley, and Isaiah Thomas. They went from the 7th seed last year to the 5th this year with Isaiah Thomas having an All Star season this year. This year of the playoffs will have lots of surprises as always.

MOST IMPROVE PLAYER TROPHY: The winner of the 2015-2016 was Portland Trail Blazers Shooting Guard C.J. McCullom NBA ALL STAR MVP: The winner of the 2015-2016 NBA All Star MVP was OKC Thunders Point guard Russell Westbrook.

The Sixth-Man of the year is an underdog award, the candidates are Jamal Crawford for scoring 15 points a game coming off the bench. Other candidates could be, Jeremy Lin, Shaun Livingston and Victor Oladipo. A once in a lifetime award is “the rookie of the year” award as players can only win this award in their rookie year. There’s really only three candidates for rookie of the year as they are all great scores; those included are D’angelo Russell, Kristaps Porzingis and Karl Anthony Towns. Last, but not least, is the best leadership trophy in the NBA, it’s the coach of the year. There has been great coaches in the league, but only one will go home with the trophy. Steve Kerr is a great coach that led the Warriors to a record breaking 73-9 record. There shouldn’t be any other coach to win the award but him. Other notable awards was Klay Thompson winning the 3 point competition, Russell Westbrook winning all star game MVP, Zach Lavine winning dunk competition, and Karl Anthony-Towns winning the Skills Challenge. This year is going to be a great year for award winners.

The 2016 NBA Regular season is coming to a wrap up as 8 teams from the western conference battle it out and 8 teams from the eastern conference battle it out to reach the NBA Finals. On the Western Conference, the 8 teams that made the playoffs are the Golden State Warriors, San Antonio Spurs, Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Clippers, Portland Trail Blazers, Dallas Mavericks, Memphis Grizzlies and Houston Rockets. At the #1 Seed the Golden State Warriors had a record breaking season of 73-9 and the leading scoring player in the NBA Stephen Curry. The #2 seed San Antonio Spurs also had a great season with a 67-15 record. Despite The Spurs having an old roster, they still have the young Defensive player Kawhi Leonard; a great leader for that organization. Our #3 seed is The Oklahoma City Thunder, making a comeback season after Kevin Durant’s injury. Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant lead the Thunder into the playoffs. Seed #4 are the Los Angeles Clippers, having a stacked front and back court with Chris Paul leading the pack. The Clippers once again make the playoffs after losing in the conference semifinals in 2015. The Portland Trail Blazers stand at the #5, having a surprise season after losing Lamarcus Aldridge. The Trail Blazers have a surprise player step up his game by the name of C.J McCollum. The Dallas Mavericks, standing at the #6 slot, had a quiet but good season. Dirk Nowitzki still leads the Mavs in his 18th season. In the #7 slot, the Memphis Grizzlies make the playoffs with a great front court. Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol lead the Grizzlies to a good season. At the #8 seed the Houston Rockets fall to the 8th seed after being in the 2nd lead and going to the conference finals. The

This track season has been evidently hard on the track team as as whole, due to the lack of athletes on the team roster. However that is not enough to bring the spirit of the team down for the participants; they still train day in and day out, attempting to make up for the loss of potential talent. Even though our track team has a low number of athletes, since it’s mostly an individual’s sporting event, there are still a number of athletes who still have a shot at making to districts. Spanaway Lake may not have the largest track team, but what they do have is the biggest heart. They do not give up easy and they always fight with a passion. Even though this season got off to a rocky start, the team still held their head high without the mind to give up and pushed for personal records as a few other athletes were invited to districts. The determination to win is in the spirit of our sentinels. The most fascinating thing about taking a loss is to see what is done to improve where the faults and mistakes were made. Our sentinels have made a lot improvement as a team; sports are not always about winning it’s about doing your personal best, having a great time enjoying what you love, and making improvements. During the Off-Season, the track team has lots of opportunity for room to improve. Practicing and giving their all and showing progress, sentinel athletes strive to win having sportsmanship is what creates a great team supporting and cheering for one another is the most important part of being a team. Hopefully next season the track team will have the potential we need with a larger population of the athletes on the team.

This year’s boys soccer team is coming off a season where they made playoffs for the first time in school history. Thanks to coach Ryan Kolowinski and Gary Milbradt, the team is eyeing another run to the SPSL playoffs. Since the beginning of the season Coach K. has pushed the team harder to make a change in improvement from last years season the season this year has been a whole lot tougher this year for our boys soccer team due to their huge target on their back for competing in playoffs for the championship. The boys soccer team works hard at practices and games to become a better team throughout the season the team has gained more knowledge on soccer. Keeping their eye on the ball and focusing on their foot actions and moves they know what to expect in the game. Teams know that the sentinels come to play and also have fun but will also make you work for the victory they have made a huge improvement and along the way of their journeys they have formed a bond, a friendship and a team. Although this season was not the best season for our boys soccer team, it was still a great year with determination with almost every game being a hard loss by one point shows how hard they work and how much they did not give up. Even though taking a loss hurts knowing that you gave your best effort to your greatest content ending on a close game is not too bad of a feeling it shows progression and hard work. One day their will be a time where our boys soccer team will meet another competitor in the championships in our district and bring honor and recognition to the Spanaway Lake Sentinels school history.

These two iconic players retiring marks a big change in the game world because they are arguably the best of the best in their sports. They demonstrated hard work and how dedication pays off. They never gave up and battled through countless injuries and many other personal issues. Both these guys had careers one could only dream about having. Woodson once remarked “It’s been an unbelievable ride. If I was writing a script on how (my career would go) I don’t think I could’ve written it better.” When Kobe was asked about retiring he claimed, “A decision like this, you can’t make that decision based on outside circumstances. It has to be an internal decision, and finally I’ve decided to accept that I can’t actually do this anymore, and I’m okay with that.” These two players both having worn the number 24, they will leave a legacy behind and have raised the standards for those who will hold the number in the future.

GET LOUD: A picture of former NBA guard Kobe Bryant getting hyped after a play. Kobe Bryant won five championships with the lakers and is the lakers all time leading scorer.

jlayman@slhsonguard.com Kobe Bryant and Charles Woodson are two of the greatest and most iconic sports players in our generation, but sadly good things always come to an end. Kobe is a shooting guard for the Los Angeles team, towers over others at 6’6, and weighs 212 pounds. Kobe Bryant was drafted to the Charlotte Hornets in 1996, but traded that same day to the Lakers. He has won 5 championships and is the Lakers all time leading scorer. On Kobe Bryant’s last game he scored an astounding 60 points, shooting 22-50 (44%). Charles Woodson was a Free Safety for the Oakland Raiders, though just retired this year in his 18th season in the NFL. Being shorter than Kobe, he reaches 6’1 and weighs around 210 pounds. Woodson was on the Raiders from 1998 to 2005, and then moved on to the Green Bay Packers from 2006 to 2012. Eventually he came back to Oakland and was there from 2013 to 2015. Woodson won one super bowl in 2011 with the Packers. Woodson was the first player in the NFL to record 50 interceptions and 20 sacks in a career. He is second all time for interceptions returned for a touchdown.
