Advice For Spanaway Lake’s Future Freshmen STAFF

Freddie Green The only advice I can give the freshman is the three simple rules of high school. Follow these rules as you please. They are highly recommended and make high school easy and simple. Rule 1: Be nice; this rule can apply to high school and life. Seriously, be nice to everyone, including the janitors, administration, teachers, and fellow students. Be warned, however, still stick up for yourself People often confuse kindness with weakness. Rule 2: If you do not do an assignment, turn in what you have. If you follow rule one, your teacher may help you on homework and may give you extra time, especially if you have a valid reason to why you did not finish your work. Trust me, a 3 out of 10 is better than a zero out of 10. The effort shown is what will change the teacher’s mind to whether or not they allow you to redo the assignment. Rule three: Bring headphones and a charger. Even though headphones are not allowed, they are helpful in drowning out unwanted people and noises. Always ask if you can use them in class. You may be surprised, your teacher may allow to use them. And in regards to the charger, eight hours is a long time, so bring a charger. Joey Holt The first tip I will give to a freshmen is to be cool with everyone. Try to hang out and be friendly with everyone. It is not what you know in life, it is who you know. My second tip is to never stand in the middle of the hallway with your friends. Nothing is more annoying than a posse of children blocking the hallway. My third tip is to not be so sensitive in high school. Spanaway Lake High school is full of children and some of those children act as such. So, when a child is mean to you, do not get all depressed and sad. You have

to man up and not be so sensitive all of the time. Kalli Harpe-Provose To all incoming freshmen, next year you are going to lose a lot of friends. It is up to you, throughout your high school experience, to figure out if it is okay to leave them behind, or keep them close. Some people might say it is a good thing to have a bunch of friends, but in my opinion, I am okay having just a few close friends who I can count on. When it come to school work, do not procrastinate just get it done. Kaylee Tolentino Whatever you do, do not procrastinate! Procrastination and laziness are what led me to being a year behind in math. During my freshman year, I would always put aside work or say “I’ll get it done later.” The truth is I never got it done, until the next year when I was a sophomore in a freshman class. So long story short, just do your work when it is due.

Jason Rehms One tip for incoming freshmen would be, the lockers in the locker room can be hit open, so do not trust it with all of your things. Another tip would be is to never to procrastinate, just get your work done on time and do your best quality work. High school can be a lot harder just because of procrastination, so just do not do it.

kinda fishy. So remember with any PE class where you use the locker room be as safe as you can and make sure your belongings are taken care of. Also do not be that weirdo in the locker room that actually uses the showers, do not spray so much cologne to where everyone can smell it, and make sure to use a lot of deodorant. All in all, take care of yourself and your belongings when you’re in a PE class.

Issac Morales Remember if you ever take a PE class, always leave your bag with all your valuables in Mr. Robak’s office or take it with you. Believe me, every year that I have been here, I have seen a case of robbery in the locker room and most times the items are never recovered. There are some people in this school that are not so great. I knew this one dude that would always stay in the locker room after everyone left that seemed

TACOMA DOME: The Tacoma Dome, where the Bethel School District and several other school districts hold their annual graduation ceremony. This year’s graduation will happen on June 12th at 4pm.

and stress you out too much. Keep your grades up and your GPA strong. So do not slack. Prepare for the backstabbing, fakes and cattiness don’t hangout with fake people move on!. STAY LOWKEY! High school is hungry when it comes to rumors and drama, keep your business on lock and don’t associate with everybody. Have fun your freshman year is a one in a lifetime thing and live it to your desires. It will be over before you know it.

June is the month of many graduation ceremonies, a time when a graduate’s personal star shines more brightly in the sky as they mark the passage of time and progress in life. Most cultures consider graduation from high school a major milestone and one of the last remaining “rites of passage” in modern societies. This years’ Spanaway Lake graduation ceremony is on June 12 at 4:00 p.m. at the Tacoma Dome. The first ten tickets are free to the graduating senior and any additional tickets cost $5.00. In order to attend graduation, a person must have a ticket given to them before June 12. No tickets will be sold at the Tacoma Dome. In today’s world, there are graduation ceremonies, where diplomas are awarded to each graduate with a handshake and are typically followed by parties where graduates receive gifts of money and the well wishes of invited guests. Graduation takes on a special significance in our ability as one transition where we honor the exciting, challenging, and painful process of “letting go,” that begins before high school even starts. The teenager must let go of a childhood and the

safety of dependence, and the parents must let go of the emotional anchor which they had for a most of their lives. Many graduates run from their parents and desire to go to college as far away from home as possible. When graduates move away, they get their first taste of living away from home which brings added responsibilities. Cooking, cleaning, and doing laundry are a few examples of how college students have to learn to provide for themselves. Which could be very helpful for students in the future help them learn how to be on their own and not having to depend on their parents. Graduation is a breakthrough in every teenagers life that makes them feel accomplished and grown up. Their first steps towards adulthood, is to have their own responsibilities and being in control of their lives. Where they go in the future, is in their hands. Congratulations to the class of 2017 and all of your amazing accomplishments.

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF After three years of hard work, dedication, and endless hours of stress, the class of 2018 has finally made it to senior year! For over a decade, we have had school as a safety net and, for the most part, had no real-life responsibilities. With our childhood quickly coming to an end, it all seems to be a blur. I think that I can speak for all of us when I say that we are so very ready, but freaked out beyond belief. Summer is right around the corner and for many of us seniors-to-be that means the opposite of relaxation. AP Projects, SAT preparation, and college applications are all in the back of our minds as we digest the fact that our last year is going to be crazier than we’ve ever imagined. This summer is also very meaningful to us because it’s our last summer as a “kid.” Personally, I know that these next three months are going to be full of adventure, studying, and just trying to make the most

of it without getting sidetracked. High school has been a roller coaster in every way, shape and form. As a freshman, we all wandered around awkwardly and annoyingly, not really knowing our places. In our sophomore year, most of us had our group of friends and were in the high school mind set. That summer between sophomore and junior year was monumental. Each of us had our own life changing event, mine just so happened to bring me to Spanaway Lake. That was also the summer that many of us changed into the people who we are today. As we watch some of our closest friends graduate into the real world it makes it feel more real than ever for us. In a year’s time it will be us, the Class of 2018, walking across that stage in the Tacoma Dome to collect our diploma that represents our first major milestone as an adult. About a month ago every single adult in my life has started the infamous question, “Where do you want to go to college?” After the first few times I finally was able

to give them a list of three to four colleges that I am seriously considering, but that first time when my best friends mom asked me, I panicked a little bit. The thought of going to college and being an adult can be overwhelming sometimes, but the longer I think about it, the easier it seems to get. I am the biggest procrastinator alive and I’m so glad my parents are really pushing me towards being an adult, or I would drown for sure. We have made it so far in this journey called high school and it’s almost over for us. Senior year will be one to be cherished. Every single one of us should make the most of it: join a club, try out for sports, participate in joust, wear sentinel gear, and most of all have fun! Enjoy high school while we still can and just try to enjoy it.

The Journey Through Senior Finals BY KAYLEE TOLENTINO STAFF

As a high school student I know first hand how stressful finals week can be. Having to cram for everything and make sure that I am prepared, and personally, the length of the testing period makes a huge difference to me. Here at Spanaway Lake, in these past years, the staff and administration have given the student body an advantage during finals week. That advantage were study periods before the final begins, and a 90-minute testing period for each final. This year unfortunately the staff had decided to get rid of the normal finals schedule and switch over to only two days for finals like the other high schools in the district. This school year the second semester finals happened by an executive decision to make finals span over two days with a 55-minute testing period for each final. Each test will be back to back, with no study periods in between. This decision I really disagree with. The student success rate is high at Spanaway Lake because the student body is for one very hard working, and two the staff has always went above and beyond with making resources available for us to succeed. We have hundreds of resources to succeed, so failure should never be an option. Personally, I see 90-minute testing periods, study periods in between tests and having three days to take finals instead of two people will have the ability to succeed. If one of our main resources is taken away from us how will our grades be effected as a reaction to the switch? I know there are other ways to succeed

SENIOR FINALS: As seniors finish their finals they worry about the grades that they will get and what will end up on their final transcript. Your finals can make or break you.

without the old finals schedule, but still we deserve and need that extra day and those extra 40 minutes to take finals. A final is over at least a whole semester of information, some are over whole years of a class. We already have enough stress leading up to the final we shouldn’t have to stress about not having enough time

to even finish the final. But over all, the new final schedule can have an effect on so many different people, and it will make it difficult to get the whole final done in 55-minutes, but we will figure out how to make it work.

Bad just got sad! The Oxygen channel announced that its taking an axe to its reality TV programming, including the show Bad Girls Club! Which has managed to run for 11 years, the 17th season will be premiered on February 14th, and will be its last. Bad Girls Club is one of the most popular reality shows that aired on Oxygen TV. The show is where a bunch of fierce, loud-voiced women, who are put together in a stunning, brand-new mansion where they are basically left to have a lot of conflict and bickering that is displayed on camera. EDITORS

HUNTER: The year of 2017 has been all sorts of crazy music, from Justin Bieber song called Despacito, to Lord Huron song known as, The Night We Met. This year have been full of amazing music and it just keeps coming back but, even better than before. The song and artist I believe will be the top artist this coming summer is, Justin Bieber. Since he is always coming up with new, and very unique music that not only he loves but everyone else adores as well. Justin, career has been a rollercoaster but he hasn’t given up, he keeps trying and putting his all into what he loves most. But I think, he will become a artist that everyone will love and will enjoy listening to and jamming out to his awesome music. My personally favorite by Justin is, either “I’m the One”, or a whole completely different song called, “Despacito.” Either way they are both fantastic and I greatly enjoy movin’ and groovin’ to his songs.

ANNABELLE: The year 2017 has been full of great music and with summertime quickly approaching I have my eyes peeled for rising artists. One of my personal favorites that I can see totally exploding over summer is Khalid. His hits “Location” and “I’m The One” have already made it onto every teenagers playlist. He collabs with other huge artists such as Justin Bieber and Chance the Rapper to produce super catchy songs that you can’t help but dance along to. Speaking of Justin Bieber, ever since his huge comeback he has not stayed off of the charts! Currently number one on the Billboard Hot 100 is Despacito, a colab between Bieber and Luis Fonsi. With a catchy beat and lyrics that 70% of teenagers don’t know, it’s really a great song. It is sang mostly in spanish, but their amazing voices distract from the fact that you don’t know at all what they’re saying. I have a feeling that this summer isn’t going to the kind that has one song that has everybody wrapped around their finger. I think there will be numerous phenomenal songs put out by a variety of artists in different genres that will blend together perfectly to create the ultimate summer medley.
