Anita in West Side Story, Rosie in Bye Bye Birdie and Velma Kelly in Chicago. In 2002, she became the first Latin-American to receive the Kennedy Center Honors award. In 2009, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Her advice to aspiring dancers and singers? Just this: “Love what you do. Be strong in what you do. Be proud of what you do.” We talked with Chita Rivera during the holidays. The conversation turned to her new show coming to Folsom, cooking, and of course, performing on stage.

Q. YOU’VE CREATED A NUMBER OF ICONIC BROADWAY CHARACTERS. DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITES?

That’s hard. It’s like you’ve got 15 kids and being asked which is your favorite! It was a great, great experience to do all these characters. West Side really gave us all a jump. So I guess I have to give Anita a nod, but it’s not really my favorite. Kiss of the Spider Woman was a blast. It was fabulous to play a movie star and have a bunch of fabulous dancing boys. Rob Marshall choreographed it. That was an amazing experience. Chicago was also an amazing experience. When you’re from what they call “The Golden Age,” every theater had a hit in it. I was there. So each show was a great, great, great experience.

Q. YOU WORKED WITH SOME LEGENDARY CHOREOGRAPHERS—

JEROME ROBBINS, BOB FOSSE, GOWER CHAMPION, MICHAEL KIDD, JACK COLE. ANY FAVORITE STORIES?

I remember walking past Jerry when he was about to kill one of the boys, and just quietly saying to him, “Don’t do it.” He fell out of his chair laughing and said, “How did you know that?” I said, “I could tell from your face. You were about to kill him.” He said I saved a boy’s life that day.

But absolutely before every show, my dressing room is cleared, and I have a wonderful space that some might call an altar, but it’s a space I have.

The sweet thing is that my friends ‘‘ say, ‘I WANT YOU TO REMEMBER ME’. . . So when I say my prayers, all

of those people are INCLUDED. . . Q. ARE THERE ANY RITUALS YOU HAVE EITHER BEFORE OR AFTER A PERFORMANCE?

Not after. On Sunday, after would be inviting the kids into my dressing room and having mimosas. That’s a ritual on a Sunday or Saturday night.

A priest friend of mine gave me the Infant Jesus of Prague. It’s a beautiful statue. I say just a little prayer before I go on just so that I’m completely where I’m supposed to be and I do the show correctly and I enjoy it and I entertain the audience.

And just let me do it right, that’s all. The sweet thing is that my friends say, “I want you to remember me.” I’m going to give you this little pig or something or this picture or this gold statute or this little angel. So when I say my prayers, all of those people are included in it. There was this wonderful man on the street in Toronto when I was there with Kiss of the Spider Woman, and he was carving little figurines out of soap. I saw him, and it was cold. So I said, “Let me just buy one of these so he’ll feel like he sold something today.”

And when I got it back to the theater, I looked at it; I turned it over, and it was an angel. It was just as beautiful as it could be, just beautifully carved, and it was soap. That’s all it was. It sits on my altar, and reminds me of that time and that little man, and it also is probably one of my many guardian angels. You know what I mean? It’s just a personal kind of thing. I have my family’s picture and things from my daughter on it. So I’m kind of reminded of important things before I go on stage. It sounds funny when you talk about it, but – God gives you those moments that you can get away from other things and refuel your body with other spirits.

Q. TELL ME ABOUT CREATING YOUR CURRENT SHOW. OBVIOUSLY, YOU DIDN’T JUST SPEND A LITTLE TIME ON A FRIDAY NIGHT AND WHIP IT TOGETHER.

tor and also the drummer. Michael Patrick Walker is the pianist, and the third person is Jim Donica. He’s my bass player. We sat down for a long, long time and just thought about what the rundown should be. We changed arrangements. We switched songs. And we tried to figure what numbers go best with each section. There’s a Cy Coleman section, Carousel and sort of a French thing with some-thing from Seventh Heaven and Birdie. They’re just sections and stories that go with the music. And there’s dance and movement. It’s a lot of fun.

Q. YOU’VE DONE A WIDE RANGE OF CHARACTERS ON STAGE. ARE THERE ANY CHARACTERS THAT YOU’VE SAID, “GOD, I’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO PLAY THE PART OF…”

We’re doing The Visit. That was a movie with Ingrid Bergman and Anthony Quinn. It was a Friedrich Dürrenmatt play years ago. And it is one of Kander and Ebb’s shows that they wrote together before Freddy passed. It’s an extraordinary story. Karla is an extraordinary woman. I can’t wait to play that part. We’re doing it this summer up in Williamstown. I really honestly can’t say there’s something that I want to do. I’ve been a really lucky gal. They’ve been all perfect for me. It would be pretty selfish to say, “Oh, I want to do…” because I have certainly had many great roles.

Q. IF YOU WERE TALKING TO A YOUNG PERFORMER WHO DREAMS OF PERFORMING ON BROADWAY, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THEM?

Make sure they’re true to themselves and why they want to be in the business. First of all, they have to find out their gifts. If they want to be a dancer, they have to study. They have to have their technique, and it’s got to be serious. And if they want to sing, they’ve got to study. Listen to your directors and your teachers. Listen. Love what you do. Be passionate about it. Don’t strive to be a star. Just strive to be really good at what you do. What the hell is a star? Mickey Mouse is a star, a cartoon. Chita Rivera’s Corn Pudding Serves 12

INGREDIENTS 6 11- ounce cans vacuum-packed corn 1 12-ounce can evaporated milk 6 eggs, beaten Sugar or sugar substitute, to taste 1/2 stick butter, melted Salt Pepper DIRECTIONS Combine all of the ingredients, using the evaporated milk to cover the mixture. Sweeten to taste. Cook at 425°F for 30 minutes. Lower temperature to 375°F for an hour or until golden brown. The mixture becomes like custard.

Three Jazz Piano Concerts

The seating is limited and there’s very little distance between the audience and performers making it a favorite for everyone. Each of these shows has a different style and feel. But what they do have in common is that they feature world-class performers at their best.

The musical Thoroughly Modern Millie comes to the local stage on Valentine’s Day First it was an Oscar-winning Hollywood movie. Then it became a Tony Award winning Broadway show. Now, the newest production of the show will open at the Harris Center on Valentine’s Day. Thoroughly Modern Millie is a zany comic show featuring a smalltown girl determined to make it in New York City in the roaring 1920s.

Thoroughly Modern Millie, the 1967 film, starred Julie Andrews, already an enormous star due to her roles in the musical films Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music. She plays Mille Dillmount, a Kansas girl leaving the traditions of rural life behind to become a ‘modern’ city dweller. The film also included Mary Tyler Moore as Miss Dorothy, just a few years before she became a megastar. The inimitable Carol Channing

played Muzzy van Hossmere, a character as eccentric as the actress herself. The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards and five Golden Globes in 1967, and was a box office hit. It’s a thoroughly 60s take on the 1920s, combining flapper styles with 60s chic and a new “women’s liberation” sensibility. The result is a comical yet unique story about the difficulties in resolving love and

relationships with a modern careerfocused life. We wouldn’t see a Broadway Musical version for another 25 years. The stage show preserves the musical flavor, naive charm, and comic wit of the original movie. But, it also presents a re-vamped story and a whole lot more song and dance action for theatre audiences. Millie arrives in New York as a

young Kansas girl dazzled by the bright lights of the big city. No sooner than she arrives, however, she is mugged and then chided by future love interest Jimmy for her naive dreams of becoming a modern city woman. Little does he know that she has big plans for herself and the determination to see them through! Mille finds a job as a stenographer

for Trevor Graydon III, with the full intention of first impressing, then attracting, and finally marrying him in order to secure herself a comfortable future (“a thoroughly modern goal!”). She meets Miss Dorothy, a rich girl slumming it in the hotel where Millie boards with other modern girls, and soon a four-pointed love square dominates the action. Meanwhile, Millie’s landlady, Mrs. Meers, and her unlucky Chinese associates are busy kidnapping young orphan women from the same hotel that she runs. She found a profitable business selling them into slavery in Hong Kong. This strange twist adds a whole level of excitement and action, not to mention opportunities for plenty of comedy, to the already quirky show. While the original film was a hit, time slowly covered it with cobwebs. Audences lost interest until the story was retrieved and re-worked into a musical by Jeanine Tesori with lyrics by Dick Scanlan at the end of 1999. Production began in 2000 and a Broadway show was cast and began running in 2002. The title role was originally won by Kristin Chenoweth. When she left the show, she was eventually replaced by Sutton Foster who gained not only her first lead role on Broadway, but also a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical. Foster’s big break with Millie propelled her to stardom, first on Broadway (Little Women, Young Frankenstein, Shrek the Musical), then in television, and now in film. Including Foster’s acting prize,

Thoroughly Modern Millie was nominated for 10 Tony awards in 2002. It won six of them including the awards for Best Musical, Choreography, Orchestrations, and Costumes – in short, a real sweep! While the show’s original run on Broadway ended in 2004, a West End run, UK tour, and other international productions have helped to build the profile of the show. Packed with 17 original musical numbers, the score pushes performers to their limits. There are

swinging Vaudeville-style tunes, powerful ballads, comedy numbers, electrifying tap dance routines, and even a tongue-twisting light operatic piece “Speed Test” reminiscent of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Modern MajorGeneral. Even more endearing is the cast of wacky characters chasing love, fame, fortune, and happiness against the backdrop of a city bursting with both obstacles and opportunities. Thompson Square, composed of husband and wife, is one of country music’s hottest duos today. The Korean words ‘samul’ and ‘nori’ mean ‘four things’ and ‘to play.’ In the case of SamulNori, they refer to the original ensemble of four musicians playing and dancing with four percussion instruments (eight musicians will perform for their Harris Center engagement). Founded by Kim, Duk-soo, the group’s leader and master of the Changgo (hourglass shaped drum), SamulNori has become the leading traditional Korean performance group. The ensemble performs in many configurations but usually tours as a quartet with Master Kim at the helm. The origins of their

music can be traced to what is usually referred to as farmers’ band music (Nongak) and ceremonial music. It also incorporates the influences of folk and religious music (Binari) and their intricate rhythms have become quite uniquely their own. Since these superb percussionists formed the group in 1978, SamulNori has sparked a renaissance in Korea’s music scene and garnered worldwide acclaim. “SamulNori offers an experience that matches unsparing energy and technical mastery with a strong sense of spirituality…”(Los Angeles Times).
