10 QUESTIONS
with Nationally Syndicated, Country Radio Host
Bobby Bones In January, a new country music station went on the air in Sacramento. B92.5 FM bills itself as “Today’s Country”. . . 4
. . . ANCHORING THE STATION DURING THE MORNING DRIVE is
the nationally syndicated, “Bobby Bones Show” from Nashville. Bobby Bones has been in radio since he was 17. Now Bobby hosts the USA’s biggest country morning show together with co-hosts and good friends Amy, Lunchbox, Ray, Digital Eddie and Executive Producer Alayna. A favorite in the Austin market, Bobby has won “Austin Radio Personality of the Year” for the past three years. He also hosts a national sports radio show on Fox Sports Radio with good friend and professional tennis player Andy Roddick. Bobby does a lot of selfies with his dog, Dusty. We caught up with Bobby and asked him about his show, working with some of the biggest names in country music and his dog recording public service announcements for the American Red Cross.
Q. HOW DID YOU COLLECT THIS GROUP OF PEOPLE WILLING TO COMMIT TO RADIO FIVE DAYS A WEEK? DID YOU COLLECT THEM LIKE STRAY DOGS?
I whistled – I had a dog whistle – and they just came running. No, my main co-host, Amy, is one of my best friends in my whole life. I met her at a restaurant in Texas. I was getting my oil changed, and we struck up a conversation, and I
my old television producer and my best friend. Over time, we all came together.
Q. HOW DID YOU GET GOING ON THE COUNTRY MUSIC SCENE?
I grew up in Arkansas, and when you grow up in Arkansas, that’s the country scene. I always wanted to be on the radio, and I went to the country station locally and tried to get a job for forever. I was only 16 or

thought she was so interesting. She’s so funny, so open and honest about everything, from what’s happening in her personal Q. THE MORNING SHOW IS life to even her religious views, and BLOWING UP IN COUNTRY RADIO she’s non-apologetic, but so sweet. STATIONS IN ABOUT 60 MARKETS She quit her sales job to come and NOW. WHAT SHOULD LISTENERS work for me and do a radio show. EXPECT WHEN THEY DIAL IN? And another friend–his name is Everyone on my show is someone Lunchbox. who has never worked in a radio I met him in a bar with some station in their life. They’re all just buddies. I just thought he was my best friends in life. The show obnoxious but so funny yet still sounds like a group of friends warm, and so I said, “Hey, why don’t hanging around, talking with you come on for a couple of days,” microphones in the room. and he did. He was a delivery driver. Sometimes it comes off as quite Eventually, I got him to quit his job unpolished. 17 years old. They wouldn’t hire me. So, I went to the top 40 station, and they hired me to clean, not even to be on the air. I started cleaning the front lobby and before I knew it, I was on the air. I graduated college and started to do a morning show at 22 in Austin. I would bring country artists onto the top 40 show. The suits would say, “Hey, you’re a top 40 show; why are you bringing in country artists?” And I was like, “Well, I love country music, and I don’t think people are just oneformat people.” I think I got in trouble five or six times for doing that before they finally said, “Why don’t we just put you on a country station?”
Q. A LOT OF WORK GOES ON
catching up with everything till 3:30. I put together my entire show. BEHIND THE SCENES TO DO A My staff knows nothing about SHOW. TALK ME THROUGH YOUR what’s happening on the show. I TYPICAL DAY. Oh, man. I wake up at 3:00 a.m. every don’t give them a sheet of paper. At 4:15, I go into the station, and up morning, and it never gets easy. I turn on everything, meaning until about 5:00, we’re going pretty television – MSNBC, CNN, FOX News. fast just getting ready. I finally put the show schedule I have about a 30-minute period of
together around 4:55, we go on at 5:00, and go on until 10:00. We finish up and I’m out by 11:30 or noon. I’ll come home – run the old dog, take an hour nap, exercise, and then I’m back at it again getting ready for the next morning.
Q. A LOT OF PLACES HAVE UNPLUGGED WHATEVER SHOW THEY WERE DOING TO PLUG YOUR SHOW IN. WHENEVER SOMETHING’S NEW, SOMETIMES PEOPLE DON’T LIKE IT AND COMMENTS TEND TO BE REALLY POLARIZING. WHAT IS IT LIKE TO SIT DOWN AND READ THESE COMMENTS?
Well, it’s probably 9 to 1 people that hate versus people that are going to test us out. It’s tough for us at first, because it does sound a lot different. I wish I had a big, strong DJ voice. The only thing I could rely on was wit and trying to be authentic and trying to be funny. Hopefully that works because I couldn’t sound like the guys I wanted to sound like with those big, booming voices. People do not like change, especially when they’ve had things for so long. However – people have given us a chance. Once there was a lady in Somerset, Kentucky who called the show because they had their morning guy replaced. I said, “Hey, I know you don’t like the show, but if you listen to us for two weeks and don’t like the show still, I will drive to Somerset and bring you a hundred dollars, and we will give it to the charity of your choice.” And she said, “Okay, deal.” So two weeks went by and she 6
said, “I still hate the show.” So I got in the car, took her a hundred bucks, gave it to the charity. About two weeks after that, she called and said, “Okay, well, it’s been a month. I like the show now, and thanks for the hundred dollars.” It’s little stuff like that that. I think we grow on people.
Q. YOU’VE HAD SOME VERY BIG NAMES IN COUNTRY MUSIC COMING THROUGH. ANY FAVORITE MOMENTS ON SOME OF THOSE INTERVIEWS?
Brad Paisley came in and did some John Fogerty. I love to have artists do cover songs, because we can play their singles all day. David Nail come in yesterday
and did “In the Ghetto,” and Darius came in and did two or three songs. There’s a group called Dan + Shay. I had made a joke about them on the air saying they sound like Savage Garden with guitars, and so they showed up and played Savage Garden, and it really was a lot of fun.
Q. HAVE THERE BEEN ANY SURPRISES – ANY MOMENTS WHEN YOUR JAW DROPPED?
There are things where I look back and go, “Wow, that was really cool.” I was on the air, talking about a certain movie and saw Tim McGraw tweet, “Hey, I saw that movie, too.
WISH I had a BIG, strong DJ ‘‘IVOICE . The only thing I could

SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT (PSA) STUFF AND EVEN YOUR DOG DID A PSA FOR THE AMERICAN RED CROSS. SO THE BIG QUESTION IS, IS DUSTY NOW PRESSURING YOU FOR MORE TIME ON THE MORNING SHOW?
Well, I’ve got to say, he’s a very humble dog. Dusty got famous at a very young age, but he’s got his feet firmly on the ground, and he knows where his fame is, and he just hangs out. And for my co-host Amy, we set the

world record for food packing, for an orphanage in Haiti that had no food. We packed over 500,000 meals in an hour. That’s her passion.
Q. I KNOW YOU GET GIFTS ALL THE TIME FROM LISTENERS, RIGHT? WHAT’S BEEN THE WEIRDEST, STRANGEST GIFT THAT YOU’VE GOTTEN?
Well, we don’t eat the food that comes in, as much as we’d like to, because we never know what’s inside it. People send me dolls with my head on it – almost like they’re voodoo-cursing me. I get paintings that people have made of me, and it looks like the kid from Mad magazine. I’m like, “Man, do I look like that? Is that what I really look like?” I don’t see very well. I have darkrimmed glasses, so I get a lot of Buddy Holly stuff; I get a lot of Weezer stuff – both people I love. We get a lot of prison letters and try to write back to these guys.
Sometimes they get out and we meet them and try to – I wouldn’t say get their life back on track, because we’re just a radio show, but be a small step and some sort of normality for these guys.
Idol now—who is really one of the biggest guys in music, period—I mean he listens to the show. He and Nicole Kidman text me about segments they think are hilarious. That doesn’t happen anywhere else.
I got PULLED OFF the air once ‘‘because the FBI came into the studio and said, “Hey, YOU’VE GOT TO COME WITH US.
’’
Q. SO WHAT IS IT YOU THINK THAT MAKES COUNTRY MUSIC SPECIAL?
The artists are so accessible. It’s rare that someone doesn’t come in and say, “Hey, I really appreciate it. Here’s my cell phone number.” It’s even true for the big stars – Keith Urban and I text all the time. A guy like Keith, who is on American

Darius Rucker just agreed to play a charity show for zero dollars in October for me. It’s that stuff that makes the country community so much cooler and nicer than anywhere that I’ve seen before.
Q. THE LAST THING IS, WHY ARE YOU DOING RADIO VERSUS – I DON’T KNOW – THE 5,000 OTHER THINGS YOU COULD BE DOING?
Well, when I was 5, 6 years old, I was asked, “Hey, what do you want to be when you grow up?” and I had three things listed. I wanted to be a standup comedian, I wanted to be on the radio, and I wanted to be on TV. And I do all three of those things. I like making people laugh. I find a lot of love through performance. I had a pretty rough childhood
growing up. I don’t know my dad. My mom died in her 40s, and she had a lot of issues – substance abuse issues – and I kind of became the parent at a really young age. So that’s where I find a lot of fulfillment—making others happy, making others smile.
You can hear the Bobby Bones Show in the mornings, Monday—Friday on B92.5 FM. It’s also available online via iHeartRadio.

Dangerous Waters is the adventure reality television show that chronicles a crew of five men on four Kawasaki Jet Skis as they attempt to travel through remote and dangerous waterways to be the first team in history to circle the entire planet on personal watercraft. Their adventures are chronicled in each episode, along with the incredible challenges they face — and ultimately overcome — during their 37,000-mile expedition. Produced locally by Folsom resident, Steven Moll, Dangerous Waters is available on the MAVTV network which is currently available in 70 million homes globally. Unlike most men in their early
40’s, Steven has always had a burning desire to do something great, something spectacular, something that no one has ever done before. He threw caution to the wind, sacrificing all of his finances to chase a dream that no one has caught before. Dangerous Waters is like no other television series in the world. Over the first two seasons, the rag tag band of brothers has faced mind boggling distances, huge waves, camping at the edge of the world, polar bears, humpback whales, and being “detained” by the Russian military. The premiere benefit event at the Harris Center on March 16 is an exclusive first peek at the new 14
season of Dangerous Waters. This season the crew began the expedition far above the Arctic Circle and became the first expedition in history to travel the notorious Northwest Passage. The crew faced numerous challenges including mechanical issues, extreme weather conditions, enormous distances and an environment that tossed the men and their machines around like children’s toys. Come experience the Arctic like you have never seen it before, up close and personal with the crew of Dangerous Waters. At the presentation you will be able to see one of the Dangerous
Waters Jet Skis that was used in the Arctic during the shooting of Season Three. All proceeds from this year’s premiere screening will benefit; Russell Ranch Elementary School, Vista Del Lago High School, Folsom High School, and the Fregoso Outdoor Foundation. Dangerous Waters Season Three Premiere Screening performs at the Harris Center Sunday, March 16 at 7:00 PM. Get tickets at www.HarrisCenter.net.

Will it be the biggest day in local philanthropy history? May 6th may be the most important day of the year for local community nonprofit organizations. It is the official Big Day of Giving 2014. The Big Day of Giving is a 24hour online giving challenge promoted by GiveLocalNow.org. Starting at midnight on May 6, the community will come together to support approximately 400 non profits from the region. It is an amazing opportunity to raise unrestricted dollars and shine the spotlight on our vibrant nonprofit sector. The Sacramento region will join hundreds of community foundations across the country on this day through a national campaign called “GiveLocalAmerica.” This unprecedented event is a celebration of giving by many donors. Locally it will not just bring additional funding, but increased awareness of the nonprofit sector who work tirelessly to make our community a better place. Giving challenges are sparking excitement in many other regions around the country, and have raised millions of dollars. It’s now our turn to do the same! Giving on May 6 will not only show support for our community and the work of non profits, but it
will also be an opportunity to make donation dollars go further. Many local businesses and organizations have contributed funds to a pool of matching dollars. This means that every dollar donated on May 6 will get a boost from this pool of funds through a pro-rated match. Last April, GiveLocalNow kicked off the first ever 24-hour online giving challenge for the Arts. The Arts Day of Giving brought together 78 arts organizations for one day and raised over $525,000 in online donations and match dollars. The Big Day of Giving expands the scope to include many more
nonprofit organizations. The hope is that many more people will contribute to support their favorite charities. Some of the organizations that will participate in the Big Day of Giving include: the Folsom Symphony, Stages Folsom Dance Arts, Harris Center for the Arts, and El Dorado Musical Theatre. Watch for more information about participating organizations and how you can help contribute to the cause as we get closer to May 6. For more information about the Big Day of Giving go to givelocalnow.org.
Diavolo reinvents dance, reimagines theater, and redefines thrills Theatergoers around the world are always wondering what sort of wizardry Artistic Director Jacques Heim will conjure up next for his daring troupe of performers. Diavolo takes movement, athletics, and daring to the extreme, creating abstract narratives through surreal scenes in which inspiration thrives. Diavolo company members are dancers, gymnasts, actors, athletes, and above all; teammates. They collaboratively develop work on oversized surrealistic sets and everyday structures. The structural elements and surrealistic set pieces of Diavolo create a sense of daring and risktaking through dramatic movement that juxtaposes human fragility and survival.
Only through working together with the elements of danger created by and on architectural environments does Diavolo accomplish its metaphors of the challenges of relationships, the absurdities of life and the struggle to maintain our humanity in the shadow of an increasingly technological world. Due to the unusual and inno-

choreographer and producer presents another exuberant celebration of tap dance with STePz Under the direction of Savion Glover, STePz is yet another spellbinding exhibition of tap dance to sound, and sound to dance. His latest dance production takes tap dance to new heights and
levels while fusing traditional music selections of the past with the tap style and energy of the future. Savion Glover’s STePz once again displays the infinite versatility and virtuosity of his genius as a tap master. “The result,” according to the New York Post, “is a tight show with some of the most skillful tap you’ll 21
ever see.” Savion Glover is a Tony Awardwinning, dancer, choreographer, and producer. His numerous credits include the Broadway shows The Tap Dance Kid; Black and Blue; Jelly’s Last Jam; and Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk, and the films Tap with Gregory Hines and Sammy Davis Jr.; Bamboozled by Spike Lee; and Happy

Feet (1 and 2). He is also an Academy Award®-winning choreographer. It’s hard to believe that Savion Glover is almost forty. He first gained attention in the Broadway show The Tap Dance Kid at the age of ten when, as an understudy, he took over the title role to rave reviews. In the years since then, he’s appeared in other musicals, won a Tony in his early twenties for his choreography, and done films and TV shows, spreading his particular brand of urban tap to a wide audience. The Londonist states. “Glover is a master tap dancer and entertainer but most importantly he’s an incredible musician whose instrument is his
entire body channeled through his snap, crackling and popping feet.” Glover’s style is marked by unpredictability—it’s possible to be lulled by his fine control one moment and jarred by an involuntarily flung arm the next. There is nothing boring about his dancemaking, and watching his latest piece is like going on every ride at the carnival.

What happens when a con man who wants to sell band instruments comes to town? Well, you’ve got trouble my friend...right here in River City. By any reasonable measure, The Music Man is one of the most enduring and popular shows of Broadway’s Golden Age, one that has permeated all realms of pop culture. The Beatles recorded its eleventhhour romantic ballad (“Till There Was You”) and even performed it in their first Ed Sullivan Show appearance. Two of its most memorable numbers (“Trouble” and “Shipoopi”) have been lovingly spoofed on The Simpsons and Family Guy respectively. The Music Man is a timeless musical with book, music, and lyrics by Meredith Willson, based on a story by Willson and Franklin Lacey. The plot concerns con man Harold Hill, who poses as a boys’ band organizer and leader and who sells band instruments and uniforms to naive Iowa townsfolk, promising to train the members of the new boy’s band. But Harold is no musician and plans to skip town without giving any music lessons. Prim librarian and piano teacher Marian sees through him, but when Harold helps her younger brother overcome his lisp and social awkwardness, Marian begins to fall in love. Harold risks being caught to win her. In 1957 the show became a hit on Broadway winning five Tony Awards. The cast album won the first Grammy Award for “Best Original Cast Album” and was number one on
the Billboard charts for 245 weeks. In 1962, The Music Man was adapted from the stage for the big screen, becoming one of the biggest hits of the year. It was highly acclaimed critically and was the first film to sell TV rights for over $1 million. Over and above the statistics detailing its success. There are a few things that almost no one knows. Here are six fun facts about The Music Man. “Ladies and gentlemen, either you are closing your eyes to a situation you do not wish to acknowledge, or you are not aware of the caliber of disaster indicated by the presence of a pool table in your community!” ~ Professor Harold Hill in The Music Man
25
WEST SIDE STORY DIDN’T WIN? West Side Story is considered one of the greatest musicals ever produced. It was nominated for six Tony Awards™ including Best Musical in 1957, but the award for Best Musical went to The Music Man. West Side Story ran for 732 Broadway performances before going on tour. This compares to 1,375 performances for The Music Man— almost twice as many performances. FRANK SINATRA AS HAROLD HILL? Even though Robert Preston had played the role of Harold Hill on Broadway, Frank Sinatra was Warner Bros’ personal choice to play the leading role in the movie. However, Meredith Willson told them, “No Robert Preston, no movie.” Cary Grant was also offered the lead role, but told Warner Brothers, “Not only will I not star in the movie,
if Robert Preston does not star in it, I will not see it.” WHAT ABOUT THE UNEEDA BISCUIT? In the original Broadway cast recording, there was a verse in the song “Rock Island” that goes, “Why it’s the Uneeda biscuit made the trouble, Uneeda, Uneeda, put the crackers in a package, in a package, the Uneeda biscuit in an airtight sanitary package, made the cracker barrel obsolete!” This verse was omitted from the film version of the song. The Uneeda Biscuit was a revolutionary cracker that promised to be airier, flakier, and crisper than most other crackers. The cracker was kept fresh in a brand new concept of resealable packaging. Uneeda Biscuit was developed by the National Biscuit Company, nowadays known as Nabisco. Think of that the next time you open up a box of Ritz Crackers.
Shirley’s character, Marian, and his character, Professor Hill, kissed for the first time in the romantic footbridge scene. He leaned in for the kiss and jumped back, asking her, “What was that?” to which she replied, “That is Patrick Cassidy! Say, ‘Hello!’ “ Years later, her son Patrick had the opportunity to meet Preston. He walked up and introduced himself
MARIAN THE LIBRARIAN WAS PREGNANT? Shirley Jones, who played Marian the Librarian in the movie learned she was pregnant with her son Patrick right after filming had begun. She met with director Morton DaCosta over lunch to inform him of the situation. Her concern was that she would begin “showing” during filming. He assured her that they could work through it with costumes and also by filming her from the waist up, if necessary. He did have one request, that she tell no one about it. Robert Preston did figure it out before filming had concluded, when 26
saying, “Hello. I’m Patrick Cassidy.” Preston replied, “Yes, I know. We’ve already met.” DOES THAT SONG SEEM FAMILIAR? If you’re listening to the music during the show and two of the songs seem strangely familiar, you’re not mistaken. The lyrical ballad “Goodnight, My Someone” is the same tune
as the ever popular “Seventy-six Trombones. The difference? One is in waltz time and the other is written as a rousing march. In fact, you’ll hear a mash-up of those two songs later in the second act. WHAT’S THE CONNECTION TO APOLLO 13 AND THE DA VINCI CODE? Both Apollo 13 and The DaVinci Code were directed by the very talented director and actor, Ron Howard. Besides being Richie Cunningham in the hit television series, Happy Days, Ron Howard did a number of roles as a child actor. Those of you old enough to remember The Andy Griffith Show will remember him as young Opie Taylor. In the 1962 movie The Music Man, Ron played Marian’s younger brother, Winthrop Paroo, the shy boy with a lisp. If you’d like to see The Music Man live on stage, El Dorado Musical Theatre will be performing their production April 25 – May 11 at the Harris Center. made relevant with superb acting and clever staging,” while The New York Times exclaims “the excellent Aquila Theatre, an extraordinarily inventive and disciplined outfit.” One of the most revered novels of the twentieth-century, Fahrenheit 451 is Ray Bradbury’s dystopian tale of a bleak future where literature and knowledge are on the edge of extinction. ming – modulated into sounds of any nuance – could lead to total astonishment…highly praised by musicians after its 1983 debut, SamulNori is a complete theatrical experience as well.” (Anna Kisselgoff, New York Times). The Korean words ‘samul’ and ‘nori’ mean ‘four things’ and ‘to play.’ In the case of SamulNori, they refer to the original ensemble of four musicians playing and dancing with four percussion instruments (Eight musicians will perform for their Harris Center engagement). Founded by Kim, Duk-soo, the group’s leader and master of the Changgo (hourglass shaped drum), SamulNori has become
the leading traditional Korean performance group. The ensemble performs in many configurations but usually tours as a quartet with Master Kim at the helm. The origins of their music can be traced to what is usually referred to as farmers’ band music (Nongak) and ceremonial music. It also incorporates the influences of folk and religious music (Binari) and their intricate rhythms have become quite uniquely their own. Since these superb percussionists formed the group in 1978, SamulNori has sparked a renaissance in Korea’s music scene and garnered worldwide acclaim. “SamulNori offers an experience

Yes, the music has ancient roots, but it’s also transcendentally modern, even adventurous, at the same time.
