HEALTHY SCHOOLS INITIATIVE (HSI)

Dear Healthy Schools Initiative (HSI) community,

This school year, Sequoia Healthcare District's Healthy Schools Initiative (HSI) provided much needed funding and support for our frontline Covid response teams Wellness leads and school nurses from our eight school districts convened on a regular basis to discuss strategies and share information about fighting the ongoing pandemic Without the leadership of these individuals, it would have been difficult for our schools to re open for in person learning Health and safety comes first, and setting this foundation was essential before classrooms opened

In addition, in 2021 22, through the HSI grants program, over half a million dollars ($539,000) were allocated to 22 non profit organizations that work with our school districts Over the past 12 years, SHD has served as a leader in convening partners and providing a network of community supports and resources for students, families, and school staff Please visit seqhd org/hsi to learn more about our Healthy Schools Initiative

We would like to give a special thanks and recognition to Dr. Karen Li, MD, who recently retired from her position as the District's Director of School Health Since 2018, Dr Li's leadership was instrumental in coordinating school health efforts, especially during the pandemic Her leadership served as a catalyst for the school nurse mentor program and cultivated key community partnerships centered around mental health (CareSolace, Parent Green Folder) and prevention efforts (Tobacco Education Coalition) Thank you for your years of excellent service to our team

STAFF HEALTH AND WELLNESS CHALLENGE

After learning about this from Kristen Savilla from Belmont Redwood Shores, San Carlos School District launched a staff health and wellness challenge! 60 staff members are on school based teams for a 6 week “challenge” to build, develop, and re explore healthy habits. We know that once the school year starts, teachers and school staff can become burnt out, drained, and stop caring for themselves. This will hopefully support our colleagues in developing skills to incorporate into their daily routines to ensure they are self nourishing all year long This challenge will explore sleep, water intake, movement, adding in more fruits and veggies, mindfulness, and more!

NEW CURRICULUM

After almost a year of getting acquainted with the District, the students, the families, staff, and all the various needs, we developed and launched some new tailor made curriculums to best support our community. 1. 2. 3

We developed a comprehensive health education, Social Emotional Learning, Diversity, and community building curriculum for our K 3 small groups time with our lovely partner, Legarza. This ensures that we are expanding the offerings for our young folks to focus on the Whole Child.

We created a curriculum for middle school advisory, based on needs identified in the California Healthy Kids Survey data results. This curriculum allows students to learn about all realms of health and wellbeing, equity, mental health, SEL, and focus on creating cohesion amongst the students We are so excited to continue to track progress of this curriculum, to see how we can make it even better for next year!

Each of our schools have “Green Teams”, to focus on sustainability and Mother Nature We developed a template for all of these teams to follow to ensure consistency amongst our schools, while allowing for student voice and choice Students will be able to do school sustainability audits, teach their peers about proper waste sorting, create campaigns, and more We can’t wait to see how the students will positively change the world this year!

AWARENESS TABLING DAYS

We have been working away planning fun health and wellness prevention and promotion activities for our students. Part of that is awareness tabling days, where the mental health and nursing team goes to recess and/ or lunch to promote health topics to students. Our first event of the year is What is Health and Wellness to You? Students will be able to explore various health and wellbeing topics, such as nutrition, movement, mental health, self regulation, sustainability and more through Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune The older students will get temporary tattoos for participating, and the younger students will get coloring pages All students will get wellness Bingo to play with friends, family, or solo! We love these events we get to hear from our students, learn more about their needs, and hopefully share a nugget of wisdom they can incorporate into their day to day!

INICIATIVA ESCUELAS SALUDABLES (IES)

B O L E T Í N D E O T O Ñ O D E 2 0 2 2
