Three CrabFest venues full of fun, excitement The Dungeness Crab & Seafood Festival includes three major venues on the Port Angeles waterfront, all connected where Railroad Avenue and Lincoln Street meet at Ennis Creek, the Port Angeles Harbor and the Olympic Discovery Trail.

11 a.m. — KATE MCDERMOTT, a baker and James Beard Award cookbook finalist for “Art of the Pie: A Practical Guide to Homemade Crusts, Fillings, and Life” Cooking: Pear berry pie using Olympic Peninsula blackberries and ripe pears About McDermott: For years, the world’s culinary superstars have traveled to McDermott’s legendary workshops and pie camps in Port Angeles to learn pie-baking secrets from the master herself.

From a self-taught home baker who learned the magic of pie from her grandmother, McDermott became a nationally recognized expert on the subject. Since then, thousands have traveled to her famous Pie Cottage to get a taste.

Her critically acclaimed first book, “Art of the Pie: A Practical Guide to Homemade Crusts, Fillings, and Life,” has been called a “new baking bible” and in 2017 received a prestigious James Beard Nomination.

Her newest cookbook, “Home Cooking,” will be released in October. In this cookbook, she presents satisfying, mainly one-dish meals from her home kitchen.

McDermott will sign copies of her book “Art of the Pie” after her cooking stage demonstration.

About Adams: She will be signing copies of her book “Beauty and Bounty, A Celebration of Olympic National Park and Olympic Coast Cuisine,” after her cooking stage demo.

Readers and home chefs alike take a road trip through Olympic National Park via stunning paintings from the mountains, through the forest, to the wild coast.

2 p.m. — DAN RATIGAN, executive chef at The Fireside Restaurant at Port Ludlow Resort Cooking: Neah Bay black cod with an Eaglemount Cider deglaze About Ratigan: Originally from upstate New York, Ratigan arrived in the Pacific Northwest at age 14 and worked his way up through many of Seattle’s finest restaurants.

His approach is simple: Start with top-notch ingredients, prepare them carefully and send them out of the kitchen in meals that showcase the best the ingredients have to offer.

The Fireside Restaurant is an ideal setting for casually elegant Northwest cuisine. The dinner menu changes daily to reflect the best our region has to offer with local, in-season ingredients.

The restaurant has garnered recognition for its wine program from the Washington State Wine Commission, Wine Spectator, Touring & Tasting-Pacific Northwest Magazine, TripAdvisor.com and has been a grand award winner at the Washington State Wine Awards.

Noon — MONICA DOWNEN, owner/chef of Monica’s Waterfront Bakery & Cafe in Silverdale Cooking: Crab salad and fresh rolls About Downen: She owns and operates Monica’s Waterfront Bakery & Cafe with her husband, Mark.

Downen is a self-taught social entrepreneur with the mission of nourishing our community through engaged relationships.

Her cafe’s food focuses on using locally grown and produced ingredients to make seasonally appropriate and delicious foods. They bake from scratch, offer custom catering, teach cooking classes and offer wine tasting and classes in addition to their cafe.

3 p.m. — THOMAS YESDRESYSKI, executive chef at Sooke Harbour House Resort Hotel on Vancouver Island, British Columbia Cooking: Rock fish with couscous salad About Yesdresyski: He incorporates the bounty of the gardens, farms and forests of Vancouver Island into his food at Sooke Harbour House.

Sooke Harbour House’s kitchen serves local, seasonal and organic foods, and the menu changes daily to reflect this. Wild foods feature prominently in their offerings, and their 35-year relationship with local farms, fishers, artisans and foragers has defined them and historically helped spur the Canadian industry into the common theme that forward-thinking restaurants embrace today.

The 3-acre, manicured, rare herb and edible blossom garden and temperate sea-warmed location make it possible to extend seasons beyond the Canadian norm, allowing succulent tomatoes and fresh wild mushrooms to be served in the middle of winter.

The annual 5K Fun Run, produced by the Peninsula College Women’s Basketball Team, is a fundraiser for the team and the Peninsula College Athletic Department.

Visitors to CrabFest have a delicious opportunity to support Captain Joseph House, a nonprofit organization providing a respite/retreat experience in the Pacific Northwest, where the Gold Star Veteran Families of our Fallen Heroes can heal, make new memories and rebuild family traditions.

Professional and amateur chefs will compete to create the most delicious chowder, as determined by a People’s Choice Award, and by Jess Owen, chef at Ocean Crest Resort in Moclips. See page 6 for more information.

All chowder entries will be made from scratch on site beginning at 10 a.m.

Festival-goers can watch the chowder cooking and, beginning at noon, sample the work of the chefs and vote for their favorite.

The eighth annual Crabfest Revival will include performances by the Peninsula Men’s Gospel Singers and the PMGS Little Brass Band, with gospel favorites led by Revival director Michael Rivers.

Rivers will offer encouraging words of peace and lead the congregation in more traditional sing-along songs.

The program will conclude with a blessing for the day.

Parking lots in Port Angeles have numerous accessible spaces, including the nearby parking lot underneath the Gateway Transit Center Pavilion near Lincoln and Front streets, where the Cooking Demonstrations take place.

Since there are limited spaces on site, we have an “Accessible Drop-Off” location on Railroad Avenue (in front of H20 Waterfront Bistro and Dairy Queen).

You may drop people off and then find a parking space.

This year’s main festival art was created by Washington copper repousse artist Don Dye of Wildlife Images with his wonderful painting titled “Louie.”

Dye has been a full-time artist since the early 1980s. Wildlife wood sculpting provided a creative outlet for 20 years.

He has taken a variety of art classes in many media, including clay, photography, print making and glass.

Most recently, he has combined his skills of woodworking and knowledge of
